Fuck Jeff Skinner. Next we meet, Hendricks needs to WWE his ass too.

Farkis could have been a close relative of the Staals. Reminds me of the Semin vs Marc Staal fight that reminded me of the fight between Ralphie and Farkis in “A Christmas Story”. After the Semin fight, many people commented on the resemblances of Marc Staal to Farkis and Sasha to Ralphie.

inexcusable officiating on the Laich goal/non-goal. Get your stories straight boys, the conflicting report are damning
And now

Officials declined to speak to me about disallowed goal. #Caps
NHL has to hold these guys accountable at some point. At least it didn’t cost us the game.
The silence is damning

during the game, Alan May said that he was told by the zebras that it was incidental contact.
I didn’t think incidental contact was reviewable. It sure isn’t the other way.
Maybe one of the many resident experts can explain to me whether or not there is a process for calling out refs and their calls with the league. Every sport has a means to do so, what does the NHL do for shit like tonight? What’s the process here?

I don’t think there’s any public way of doing it. But earlier in the season, someone on the Caps broadcasting crew (forget if it was Laughlin or May) said that they should be writing to the league about the reputation calls Semin was getting. This makes me think that a team can privately make an inquiry, but nothing’s ever going to be told to the fans.

It should be publicized and at the very least the media should be going after it. My dad is a casual hockey viewer and was flipping back and forth between the game and the GB-NY game. He eventually just stopped watching the Caps game altogether because of the refs. Said it’s why he isn’t as into NHL hockey as he is football and baseball; not to say those games are perfect, but I can kinda see his point. It’s gotten to be nearly unwatchable for me, unless it’s a couple of teams playing that I just don’t give a shit about. I wonder how many more people are like my dad out there.

Eh, there’s no public accountability for refs in any sport. The leagues hate to criticize their own unless they’ve actually done something illegal.
by Flash in the Pan on Jan 15, 2012 8:18 PM EST up reply actions
There kinda is in the NFL. In fact, referees are graded after every game in the regular season. If graded too low, refs can be disqualified from calling playoff games and in some cases even face a formal inquiry by the Commissioner. Ron Blum and Gerry Austin are two more famous examples of refs that were eventually weeded out of the league for poor grades. This is what I’m hoping to find out actually does happen in the NHL.

every league reviews, to varying degrees, their officials to determine who gets post-season assignments. Auger did not get a post-season assignment last year, iirc.
A huge problem for the NHL is the officiating pool is very small. There simply aren’t enough refs, and there aren’t enough new ones coming up the ranks to get rid of the bad ones.
Publicly, all leagues will support their officials. MLB stood behind Jim Joyce. It was Joyce who made the decision to publicly admit he was wrong and apologize.

Colin Campbell’s emails that came out in that litigation last year demonstrated that there is a vibrant and active correspondence between the NHL offices and GMs complaining about missed calls. Those emails also demonstrate that lobbying can make a difference, at least for future calls. If a GM isn’t lobbying, he isn’t doing his job.

I just got home and came here to understand why that goal was called off. Hunter was told that it was disallowed because of interference but the near ref called the goal good. I thought goalie interference calls were non-reviewable but I wonder if there’s a clause for when the two refs disagree they are allowed to have Toronto decide.
All in all it felt as though the refs were calling the game in favor of the Canes—dubious icing calls, the tripping call, the uncalled boarding that upset Wideman, etc. It’s bad when so many dubious calls, goal reversals, and non calls are shown on the big screen clearly show the refs are in error.
The refs really messed with the momentum in that game, not that I’m particularly pleased with how slowly the guys started. I’m kinda cranky despite the win.
Knuble: "I am what I am. I play well with good players."

You have reason to be cranky. Caps haven’t been winning with gusto and seem lucky to get the W.
The disallowed goal isn’t shown in the NHL recap, so if anyone can post it I’d be grateful.
"One of the most difficult things everyone has to learn is that for your entire life you must keep fighting and adjusting if you hope to survive." -George Allen
Well, they should have won that game by two. That was a terrible decision, taking away that goal. I’m still trying to figure out the call—normally a goalie interference isn’t reviewable. But that huddle made me think that the refs were in disagreement. We saw it shown on the big screen several times—it definitely looked like it should have been a good goal the way the near ref originally called it. Laich made a strong effort to avoid Ward. I know that type of situation can get decided both ways, but it’s pretty unusual to have a huddle and then a Toronto review that overturns the near ref.
And I just figured out that it was slew foot on Wideman. All I could see at the game was that he went into the boards, stayed down, and then was pissed when he finally got up. No call. Refs were bad today. That also affects the players. It shouldn’t, but it does.

It isn’t according the what seems to have happened, the close ref called it a goal and the other 3 (ref and two linesmen) all ruled that it shouldn’t count because of contact. My problem with the call is that the away refs can overrule close ref (worst case was SO between Detroit and Dallas a year or two ago). In this case it was 3 to 1 so that isn’t as bad, at least that is how it sounded on the Washington Post’s site, I just don’t like how the eyes who are far away and at a bad angle can overrule the one close to the play. If he asks for help that is one thing but other then that you are just asking from trouble.
by icehammer97 on Jan 16, 2012 12:37 AM EST up reply actions
I think that’s why I was so cranky about the whole thing. Close ref calls the goal good but then other three call for a huddle, then they are talking to Toronto (though in the aftermath the refs said Toronto called them but didn’t review it), and withdraw the goal but failed to inform the arena the ruling. The whole thing was suspicious and tinfoil-worthy—not in a conspiracy way but rather in a way that the refs that particular night were not objective. There were too many other small instances where they influenced the game, such as the icings that the Caps won but were called against them. That the Caps were so badly outshot and flatlined in periods such as right after the goal was disallowed didn’t help my mood either. On the other hand nice to see Vokoun in a groove.

Yeah I agree with you, and I am normally a rational person. Something about the way that game was handled last night set my teeth on edge though.
I’ve seen this once or twice in my son’s games. A ref for whatever reason doesn’t like how one team or some of the individuals on that team are playing and they are unduly strict with that team only. That’s how the Caps’ game seemed to me last night. For whatever reason the game was called harshly against the Caps. Small things that affect how the players react as well as the flow and momentum of the overall game. But yes refs are human too, even down to their reactions to in game situations.

We don’t care that the Caps were outshot, or that the Canes had a little more jump to their step, or that the refs sucked. My sister and I had fabulous time and the Caps won to take back the lead in the SE!

I was trash talking the Bruins a bit, saying that it was good the Canes beat them because they needed to be taken down a peg or two. But the Caps now needed to beat the Canes. Then I noticed the guy’s hat sitting next to me—Bruins. Pretty amusing.

Observations from Section 421
My wife went with me to the game tonight and she said she couldn’t beat that one hour nap that was the first period….
1) Ok, the first period was a snoozefest. That said, the Caps should have gone at the ‘Canes hard. They played last night against Boston and should have been somewhat tired. The Caps should have jumped right on them at that point. No, the Canes are not a good team, but that doesn’t matter.
2) Bull[Gretzky] call on the Laich wave-off. I don’t see where anyone messed with Ward, or stopped him from making a play. The NHL’s Situation Room blog (http://www.nhl.com/ice/blog.htm?id=213) is quiet about the situation as well.
3) Sweet shot by Semin to score the first goal. I bet Ward hangs pictures of Sasha up as Halloween decorations.
4) Nice to know Hendricks cares… loved the bodyslam.
5) Awesome to see Orlov get that first goal. Now that the ice has been broken, let’s see some more.
6) Last game Kundratek looked ok for a rookie, but tonight he looked like an AHL player. He got beat really bad on several occasions. Admittedly, he’s still young, but I think Schultz or Erskine could have handled those plays better.
7) Eakin is also still not 100% NHL ready. He made some nice moves that would work at the AHL level…. they don’t work at this level.
8) The Caps are in first place… where they belong.
Next up the schedule continues with the parade of well-managed, well organized teams: Islanders, Canadiens and the Canes again… the points are there for the taking…
Occasionally reporting from Section 421 of the Verizon Center...
Unfortunately for the NHL Situation Room Whyno is on the trail of Brooksie’s disallowed goal. Seems as though the players were just as baffled by how the refs handled it.

I found it odd that they didn’t even try to broadcast the decision. normally, the ref skates out of the officials’ crease and goes on the PA to announce the decision. Here, he just skated towards the benches and made the no-goal call
He said he was told by the refs that it goalie interference but that Laich barely grazed Ward, which certainly matches what I saw on the replays shown at the game.

def. just grazed. laich in no way interfered with Ward’s ability to make that save. Ward could hypothetically have dove to his left to keep the puck out.
Agreed. It’s bad when even the players don’t understand the refs actions to disallow that goal.

I’m wrong. Hunter said the refs told him it was incidental contact.

The Situation Room blog only tells things the Toronto reviews and by rule this couldn’t have been reviewed by them so nothing will be there. I really hate that the refs from outside the zone can overrule the one 5 feet away. Also would really like these kind of plays to be reviewable, if the NFL can have a ref look at a little TV and see if a guys toe touches the line giving the ref a few replays in the penalty box so he can make a decision shouldn’t be to hard, that is of course if they want the actual ref on the ice to make the decision and not the situation room, would also work for the stupid intent to blow the whistle rule because now the ref can see if the puck was in when he intended to blow it. There are few enough goals in the NHL no reason why some potential goals can’t be reviewed and gotten right.

Orlov’s first goal and a GWG! Woooo!
The game for long stretches was a snoozer, but a win and 2 points.
were you there to see it in person?

Hey – how’s the headache? Feeling better overall?
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

headache better. this was a “minor” one in the scheme of things. as for overall….it’ll all work out for the best in the end. Just trying to figure out what that might be :)

I’m probably reiterating stuff everyone else said on the game
1) Period 1 — Caps were badly outshot. Lucky to be still tied 0-0.
2) The Caps looked much better during 2nd period, overall. It looked like they got on via the Laich goal but it was waved off. No explanation given to the crowd, which was unusual. Normally, waved off goals are explained to the crowd.
3) Sasha broke the ice and scored — for real. Nice goal!
4) Carolina scores near the end of the Power Play and the end of the period, the types of goals that can be disheartening if they were go ahead goals. I was still annoyed.
5) At least the Caps didn’t get disheartened and Dima scored his first goal to put the Caps ahead. Seemed that several Caps jumped from the bench to celebrate, including Semin. (Gotta look out for the kid from your country, Sasha.)
6) Seemed that between penalties and numerous icing calls, the rest of the game was a white knuckles affair. (That’s been the case a lot lately.)
7) It was Kids Day at the game, with a mascot game (even though I didn’t watch the mascot game since I usually take a walk around the concourse during intermissions.) They gave all fans a sticker book after the game. Granted, that’s more for the kids but still. I hear they had a kids hockey game before the Caps game.

Not luck. Vokoun was on, and stopping everything. Pure skill and talent.

Orlov is certainly flying high — flying like an Eagle. He’s having only positive emotions — to use his words.
An interesting note. In today’s free program they give out before the game, the player featured was Orlov. In Friday’s free program, they featured Brouwer and that night he got the hat trick. Hey, we’re on a streak here, of 2 games. (Previous programs had featured Oisk, who was likely scratched and Semin, who was out with an injury.)

The fight at the end
Did anyone see who that Carolina player punched? 44 came into the crowd of celebrating Caps and threw down AFTER the end of the third period. I was at the wrong end of the arena to see it clearly.
There's always more to learn about Hockey.
I don’t know who 44 decked, but I saw on NHL Tonight that Brooks and Skinner were going at it after the final buzzer.
next thing you know he’ll be telling the refs how he watches 80 games a year and that’s a penalty shot every time.

It looked like someone was seriously hurt by the puck Carlson sent over the glass and got a delay of game penalty on during the first period. The puck seemed to stay in the air forever so I don’t know how they didn’t see it, but it hit a man in the section next to us. It was a big scene, the ushers came down to help but it seriously took over 5 minutes to get the paramedics there. It took so long that the Caps doctor that sits right behind the bench went over there finally to help it. It was really odd that it took so long, because this was section 100. The poor guy looked completely out of it, they had to carry him down the row into the aisle which required two burly men and then strap him into this special chair stretcher thing and carry him up the stairs. He looked unconscious. The penalty was at 5:49 of the first and they were just carrying the guy up the stairs when the first intermission started. I hope this poor guy is ok, he was there with a family, including some kids.
A fan fell down some stairs and was knocked unconscious last year at a Caps game in the upper deck. It took the paramedics about 7 minutes to even arrive. I actually wrote to Ted afterward, because I was so upset at the length in time it took.
