It may be a Jan. game against Carolina, but if the #Caps win they move into 3rd place in the East. Lose and they will be sitting in 9th.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
If the Caps get two points – they are in 3rd, Cats in 8th, Leafs in 9th.
If the Caps get one point — they are in 8th, Cats in 3rd, Leafs in 9th.
If the Caps get zero points — they are in 9th, Cats in 3rd, Leafs in 8th.

This better be good.
Public Enemy is playing for free in a few minutes down on Skid Row here in L.A. The hockey game will most likely be the more sedate affair.

Ok – so if you are Schultz or Erskine, you have to be a bit desperate right now. You think you’ve tried hard and played hard, but now you’ve got a new coach and two rookies are in the line-up ahead of you, including gone that the Caps acquired in a minor-league deal earlier in the year.
Can’t imagine what they are thinking.

I’d think so too. Ersk knew he was the borderline guy and he’d have to play well to get time. This is probably new to Sarge and discomforting to say the least. I’m all for playing the players the coach thinks will give him the best D-core, but Shultz is more than a capable nhl defensemen and should be given more than just a singular chance.
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
Maybe Hunter’s just more comfortable being a coach to younger players — other than that I have nothing, especially Kundratek versus Schultz. Plus, 55’s been getting more concerted coaching from Johnson that he needs to implement from locations other than the nacho line. Seems like really odd asset management.
Dingos are involved. Best not to ask.
Very odd. Even without Johnson and the coaching, I would be more comfortable having Schultz over Kundratek on the ice.
I didn’t see his game, but his stat line was decent enough. But the sentiment is the game, I’d rather have Sarge than an AHL call-up who wasn’t good enough to make the Rags affiliate lineup consistently. Good for the kid and all, but I do wonder if its best for the team to sit 2 proven NHL d-men over him.
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
I think it’s pretty simple. Slow guys like Schultz and Erkine get abused by faster wingers in man defense, especially after the lockout anti-obstruction rule changes. Orlov and Kundratek have the speed to keep up.

ooo a 5 o’clock game and here I was lamenting the fact that I’d have to miss out on one of the few games I get to watch to hang out with the girl im crazy about later. Get off work early, watch hockey, other activities, my day just keeps getting brighter.

Good afternoon alex.
This is my only day off this week. I had a trade show that started yesterday for 8 days. But today has been productive. just made myself some dinner (butter chicken and cornbread) and going to settle down and watch the Canes-Caps game.

That totally fucks us up in terms of pro-rated cap space, which would probably keep us from having room to acquire anyone at the deadline till 2014. I really hope we can find a way to put him in the minors.
by Flash in the Pan on Jan 15, 2012 5:25 PM EST up reply actions
Minors or retirement would be best, could be something in new CBA to allow teams to do something other then LTIR for guys who are too hurt to play and should retire but only aren’t so they can still collect a paycheck. I don’t buyout Poti because I don’t want to have him count against the cap space for a long time
Yeah, buyout’s not a good option. Doubt Poti’d retire either, since it’s basically giving up free money at this point. Only good option is minors.
by Flash in the Pan on Jan 15, 2012 5:44 PM EST up reply actions
Would have to be sort of a wink-wink nudge-nudge thing. Have him step on the ice at practice, immediately declare him healthy and waive him. Then the only real way it could be questioned is if Poti complained, which he’d have no reason to since he’s collecting his millions without playing either way.
by Flash in the Pan on Jan 15, 2012 5:49 PM EST up reply actions
You’re asking a team who in the past had trouble reporting hockey related revenue as part of what decides the Union/Management share in the CBA to do something that could be construed as a grievance against the Union?

Why would the Union care? Poti’s still getting paid.
by Flash in the Pan on Jan 15, 2012 5:59 PM EST up reply actions
then 29 other teams could just as easily do the same thing, and unless none of those players want to play, there’s bound to be a grievance that would come out of the practice.

I don’t think it’s really applicable unless the player’s career is essentially over, as it is in Poti’s case.

I though buying him out would only put him on there for 1 year
I was trying to avoid LTIR to give us more space at the deadline, but if the buyout is for multiple years he goes to LTIR.

Right, I was looking at this line Jason Chimera ($1.750m) / Zach Parise ($6.700m) / Shane Doan ($4.550m)
and thought Parise was a center, but he’s really LW like Ovi. Oh well, I’d still love him. Not as pretty as Sasha, but better as a whole.

going from board to board on that one gave the d time to get set. A hard drive toward the net would of better suited that situation especially with Johansson having decent speed.

2 shots? Hunter: this isn’t going to work long term.
by RPI93 on Jan 15, 2012 5:32 PM EST via mobile reply actions
People keep saying this, but why not?
They’re a win away from division lead. I won’t necessarily say they’ve shown their “A” game so far, but I just think it would be obvious that a dump and chase team would generate less shots on goal per minute of puck possession than a team that shoots on the rush every time. Being outshot doesn’t necessarily mean you’re being outplayed.
by Release The Mackan! on Jan 15, 2012 5:33 PM EST up reply actions
Statistics. A team that’s getting 20-25 shots per game is simply not going to score enough goals, unless their goaltending is unrealisticly good.
by RPI93 on Jan 15, 2012 5:42 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Unless they’re just a more defensive team in general.
Washington is ninth in goals scored per game, and that’s with an average of 28 shots per game according to NHL.com’s stats.
Carolina right now is literally just throwing the puck at the net. I can’t tell you that such tactics won’t automatically translate to goals thanks to lucky bounces, but I can’t understand how you don’t think there’s more than one way to skin a cat.
by Release The Mackan! on Jan 15, 2012 5:46 PM EST up reply actions
that’s true that SOG isn’t always a good metric, lots of easy long range shots are different from quality shots from below the dots. That said if you don’t shoot you can’t score.
I think the Caps are simply trying to bring up their collective shooting %
I think the Caps are simply still a work in progress. And part of that progression involves getting into the corners and behind the net over just throwing the puck at the net.
I’m not saying it’ll win us a Stanley Cup with how they’re performing against Carolina, but I think the “getting outshot” issue is considerably overblown, especially considering their record with Dale Hunter.
All I say is just take a deep breath and relax. It’s only January. The team will only get better from here.
by Release The Mackan! on Jan 15, 2012 6:03 PM EST up reply actions
And I’ll admit, I think Cam Ward overall has been significantly more tested than Vokoun, shot totals aside.
by Release The Mackan! on Jan 15, 2012 6:05 PM EST up reply actions
Under Hunter they’re averaging 2.65 goals per game, as opposed to 3.14 under Boudreau. That’s a huge drop off. They’ve also yet to score more than 4 in a game under Hunter.
