Alzner ought to get the star treatment. I.e., someone skates over and cross checks Downie in the nose.

I hope Hunter puts cash on the board to the tune of a game-check for whoever either runs Downie through the glass, or punches Stamkos in the face.

Paging Mr. Hendricks

by Beakers Lab on Jan 13, 2012 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

Didn’t see what Stamkos did, but you know I agree with you 100% regarding Downie.

Simply can’t stand around while a guy like Downie goads a guy like Alzner into a fight. The 5 minutes alone makes it a bad deal, and the message it sends to the rest of the league is crippling.

Patron saint of quality footwear.

by fat_daddyo on Jan 13, 2012 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

simply rough up their talent since Downie messed with a non-fighter

by Beakers Lab on Jan 13, 2012 8:49 PM EST up reply actions

No, gotta be retaliation against Downie. And brutal retaliation.

I’m pretty sure something will go down.

I agree with you, I was clarifying what the Stamkos comment was about

by Beakers Lab on Jan 13, 2012 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

Oh, right. Gotcha.

I understand now.

Stamkos can be a bit liberal with his stick sometimes, which is what I figured had happened. Thanks for the explanation.

by fat_daddyo on Jan 13, 2012 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, an eye-for-an-eye type thing. I don’t think a filthy little sociopath like Downie will be deterred by a little rough stuff. Gotta hit ‘em where it hurts when they go after Alzner – Downie isn’t sufficiently important to make anything they do to him worth it.

by Knee high to a duck on Jan 13, 2012 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

I’d like to see it, not quite as certain as you are it will happen.

Downie could get along in the league without his ratbastard agitating shit, which makes said shit even more aggravating to the viewer. I would enjoy someone teaching some perspective to him.

At the risk of being accused of sucking up, can I say that Laich is one of my favorite players in the NHL. I wrote a piece about how he should have been the Ducks number 1 target if he hit the open market. I also said I’d trade Bobby Ryan for him straight up. I just love the way he plays the game.

by Daniel AC on Jan 13, 2012 8:57 PM EST reply actions

He played defenseman for a game this year when it was needed. That says it all.

by discuit on Jan 13, 2012 8:58 PM EST up reply actions

Sign me up for that trade! Hard work is all well and good, but Ryan is a lot more talented. Laich is also signed for 6 years at 4.5. Lots of risk for the holder of that contract, IMO.

by Knee high to a duck on Jan 13, 2012 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, but he’s the type of player the Ducks really need. A solid two way forward who can put up 50+ points and set a good example every night.

I don’t think Laich alone gets you Ryan, but I think I’d ask for Laich in any deal for Bobby Ryan. Then again, it’s not like fleecing Bob Murray is a monumental task.

by discuit on Jan 13, 2012 9:02 PM EST up reply actions

I know you don’t want to lose Getzlaf, but what, in your opinion, would it take to get Getzlaf if Laich was in the return package?

by Knee high to a duck on Jan 13, 2012 9:03 PM EST up reply actions

I value Getzlaf way more than I value Bobby. Probably Laich, Carlsson at least one first round pick and I’d probably ask for Johanssen. If I’m a gm. That’s where I have to start the negotiation.

by Daniel AC on Jan 13, 2012 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

Holy shit. I like Getzlaf too…but that’s a huuuuuuuge bounty.

Patron saint of quality footwear.

by fat_daddyo on Jan 13, 2012 9:08 PM EST up reply actions

Getzlaf is a top center, who plays a physical game. He’ll frustrate the shit out of every team in the east. You’re talking about a guy who will get physical with Chara. He’ll fight when he has to. He’s almost a Point per game guy in the post season. It’s been a rough season, but the guy could definitely lead you to a cup.

by Daniel AC on Jan 13, 2012 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

I worry that Mike Babcock would hunt down and kill everyone on the team that trades for him. Babbles loves Getzlaf more than Boudreau loves Laich.

That seems a little odd since Babcock never coached him for an extended period.

by Daniel AC on Jan 13, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah. I firmly believe if the Ducks survive that Detroit series, then Sidney Crosby is still Cupless. I don’t wish career ending injury on anyone that isn’t Niclas Kronwall, but I got very tired of having to hear about Crosby.

by Daniel AC on Jan 13, 2012 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

If Nik Lidstrom hadn’t had testicle surgery from the Chicago series and Datsyuk wasn’t skating on one foot, Crosby doesn’t have a Cup.

I watched one of the games when he came back, and he gave someone a two hander right in front of the net as the play was going the other way. That dude is no angel. I hate how sports stars in general are sanctified, but only some of them. As a comm scholar, sports rhetoric fascinates me.

by Daniel AC on Jan 13, 2012 9:29 PM EST up reply actions

Crosby is a dirty player with his stick. When Cherry called him out on HNIC, my jaw about dropped, because a Canadian actually said it. They just don’t see that stuff when The Anointed One does it.

Malkin’s actually even dirtier. I can’t understand why no one ever talks about his slew foots, or his elbows, or kicking Lecavalier in the helmet.

by Knee high to a duck on Jan 13, 2012 9:31 PM EST up reply actions

I have borderline players on my team. Perry does some dirty shit from time to time, but I’m a firm believer that almost every player does it. For me the line is always intent to injure. Slashing a dude hurts, but it takes a lot to break a shin.

by Daniel AC on Jan 13, 2012 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

Ha, calling Perry borderline is very generous. That guy is flat out dirty.

by Killer_Carlson on Jan 13, 2012 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think Corey is dirty. I think he does what everyone else does, only more often. He’s definitely crossed the line a few times. But, he’s an agitator. As I said, it’s stuff everybody does, he just does it more often.

by Daniel AC on Jan 13, 2012 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

Not everybody throws blatant elbows or knee drops goalies in the spine. He does do a lot of other shit that other agitators do, but he often goes above and beyond the call of duty. He has been better the past year or so, but that guy is still a scumbag.

Yeah it is. As a West Coast fan, it’s bad enough that no one every wants to talk about what’s happening to our teams, but to be fed the same teams from the East over and over again, is downright infuriating.

by Daniel AC on Jan 13, 2012 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

I do, too. You wouldn’t get Laich and Johansson, simply because the Caps can’t afford to lose any more Cs with Backstrom out after Bourque’s elbow.

I don’t think I’d give up Carlson, pending contract negotiations. If he wants too much money, which GMGM certainly knows by now, then that changes my stance. He’s probably a deal-breaker for just about anything the Ducks want to put together.

Caps have COL’s 1st and their own, so they may not mind parting with one of the picks to get a second bonafide 1C on a value contract, but all of those together isn’t going to fly, I don’t think.

by Knee high to a duck on Jan 13, 2012 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

The Ducks have a few extra centers they could package in the deal. I think it becomes more doable if Backstrom comes back. I could see it as an overpay, but after watching Murray give up Lupul and Gardiner for a player he should have been able to sign as a UFA, Beauchemin, I have to start thinking about making teams overpay and then being talked down. I just don’t trust my GM.

by Daniel AC on Jan 13, 2012 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

If you’re talking about Backstrom going to Anaheim, that ain’t gonna happen on a 10 year 6.7 AAV deal. In terms of productivity, Backstrom and Getzlaf are roughly equivalent, but Backstrom’s been more durable up to this point. We’ll see what happens with this don’t-say-the-word-its-a-week-long-migraine-not-a-concussion-dammit going forward, but that’s as close to a one-for-one trade as you’re going to come up with.

Given that Backstrom is three years younger, I think I’d take him at this point.

by Knee high to a duck on Jan 13, 2012 9:19 PM EST up reply actions

No, I meant that parting with Laich and Johanssen becomes easier when you have Backstrom and Getzlaf in the line up.

by Daniel AC on Jan 13, 2012 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

Oh, yeah. I wouldn’t bat an eye if that were the return and Backstrom weren’t looking like he’s concussed.

by Knee high to a duck on Jan 13, 2012 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

Plus, Bonino is starting to look like a solid third line center, and he could be part of that deal.

by Daniel AC on Jan 13, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

In fact, just far enough down to miss Galchenyuk.

He was creating scoring chances as an underager at that tournament, so that’s a big positive. He projects as an above-average 1st overall pick, as best I can tell.

You can find feeds occasionally, and the Memorial Cup is usually on NHL Network.

Corey Promman (@coreypronman) thinks that this draft is loaded in the lottery and not so great after that. Anything in the top 6 is going to be pretty good with one of Yakupov, Grigorenko, Murray, Dumba, Galchenyuk, and Forsberg.

Other than that, it’s all about reading up as much as you can and trying to put together the pieces for yourself.

i bet most of Semin’s shots are hovering around that goal post. Either 1 inch wide, right on the post, or 1 inch in. He’s a beast

Is there any recourse for epic fuck-ups by officials? I mean, obviously, if Tampa had pulled out the win, we’d be screwed. But I’m so very, very angry that they even let that beady-eyed, mullet-wearing ratface on the ice, I want his goal number stripped from him.
