A quick start thanks to a hot power-play (that was given a trio of early chances) has the Caps out to a 2-0 lead. Second period ahead...

Panthers missed a WIDE open net on the PP. Don’t know who’s in goal for PIT but he was outside the blue for sure.

Maybe he’ll find a steady supply of baby’s blood for Rolo in time for March/April.
Dingos are involved. Best not to ask.
Gonna need to get that baby’s blood sooner than March if they’re even going to make the playoffs

The team is certainly more exciting, to watch and we’re getting back to sucking only a little bit, so I can’t complain. I like that he lets the kids play. Carlyle stopped doing that toward the end.
He’s good at exciting hockey and letting them play. We (well, I did, anyway) loved Bruce, and y’all will too.
What trades do you see the Ducks making towards the deadline?
by Rather Bengt on Jan 13, 2012 8:32 PM EST up reply actions
I’d like to move Lydman and Visnovsky. I also want to ship out Bobby Ryan, but I’m one of a handful of Ducks fans that doesn’t like him so…
First, he wears number 9 and that’s Kariya’s number. Second, he’s a sniper stuck in a power forward’s body. I think that isn’t a problem in the East, where skill guys seem to have a little more space. Also, he only partially compliments the twins. It’s easy to say greatest line in hockey or whatever, but they’re chemistry comes and goes, because Bobby really needs to be the top option on a line. Get him a center who just wants to feed him the puck and he’d be much happier.
Can he drive a line by himself, or does he need help?
"Essentially, all models are wrong, but some are useful" George E.P. Box

by Knee high to a duck on Jan 13, 2012 8:37 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t know if he can drive a line by himself, but he can certainly make one productive all on his own. I think he needs a guy who can go get the puck for him, and who doesn’t mind staying out of his way while he works. I don’t know if he can always be self motivated, but if you put him with guy like Ward, then you might love the results.
Ward isn’t going to get him the puck in scoring positions, but he will get it off the wall and into the opponent’s zone. I think Ward is pretty much entirely wasted on any line you’re expecting offensive production from.
"Essentially, all models are wrong, but some are useful" George E.P. Box

Conventional wisdom in hockey is still like the nintendo game, the fat guy, the skinny guy and the medium guy. If there’s a playmaker on a line with someone like Ward and Bobby, it could go well. Ward gets the puck out of corners and puts away rebounds. Bobby shoots to his heart’s content and the center is there to play D and feed the puck to the open man. At the end of the day, Bobby WILL finish. He can be streaky, but he does get it done.
Like I said, I don’t know if he can drive the line, but he will guarantee that it’s productive.
I always found Lydman underrated but I only see him in extremely limited doses.
by Rather Bengt on Jan 13, 2012 8:34 PM EST up reply actions
I think he’s great for a team that can afford to spend that much on a depth defenseman, but that’s what he is: a bottom pair guy, who can kill penalties and give you a pretty responsible 16-17 minutes a night. The turnovers are only bad if you can’t score, or don’t have a good defensive guy to play with him.
It’s always good to here about players from people who watch them play all the time. It’s a big league and as fans it’s hard to know about everybody.
What did you think of Andrew Gordon when he was with the team?
by Rather Bengt on Jan 13, 2012 8:48 PM EST up reply actions
During camp, I loved Gordon. He didn’t make a lot mistakes with the puck and did good work of supporting the puck in the offensive zone. He was also surprisingly good at generating chances. He just seemed to work to create good offense. But when the season started that fool hated finishing so much I thought he was Swedish. He looks like a top 6 forward, and can fill a bottom 6 role, but the way his scoring touch disappeared made it hard to keep him around. That’s why he’s back in Syracuse. I can’t believe a guy who is so deadly in the AHL could just go so damn dry at the next level.
I agree with that. I like the guy as a person but I get the feeling he may end up as a career AHL-er.
by Rather Bengt on Jan 13, 2012 8:53 PM EST up reply actions
And that’s a little rough, because I think he works hard enough to be an NHL player, but he just doesn’t seem to fit.

Honestly, I’d like to get Schultz if you guys aren’t using him, but I think you want assets that Murray might have already pissed away, namely picks.
What happened? I remember him being so good a couple seasons ago. The Ducks need size and responsibility on the backend. He seemed like a good option if available.
He doesn’t fit Hunter’s system at all.
I dropped a little scouting report on Schultz in the 1P thread for a ’Hawks fan:
Schultz is a 4/5 defensive D on a 2.75mm contract who can play reasonably tough competition and kills penalties well. When he fucks up, he’s very visible because his game is all gap-control and reach. You don’t want him out there against fast, laterally agile players like Kane – he can’t handle that.
One guy he eats up? Evgeni Malkin. Against guys that try to use reach and stick-handling to get around their man, Schultz is ideal.
As for what he’s worth, I have no idea. Where do you see theBlackhawksDucks as having a surplus, either in prospects or in positional NHL players, keeping in mind that the Caps can’t afford to take on too much salary?

We have a lot of variety of forward prospects in Syracuse. I can’t see them giving up any of the big names, Etem, Holland, Smith-Pelley, and Palmieri, or anyone we got in the last draft, but after that I guess it’s fair game. Dan Sexton is small, but he’s fast and has a decent shot. Maroon has turned it around since he was a bust in the Philly organization. Brandon McMillan is a very defensively responsible forward who can kill penalties and pitch in 20-30 points from the bottom 6 if he has a little talent around him.
The Ducks have forward prospects, and that’s pretty much it.

I agree, but my inability to be clever about it leads me to simply stay the path of least resistance.
My theory on what’s going on w/ 55/4 and the D.
1. Hamrlik fits DH’s system
2. Wideman is London alum and boss at scoring, plus 52 is perpetually hurt. Who needs 6 D men anyhow?
3. 74/27 are the young stud D pair, so even though they’re having trouble adapting, they are going nowhere.
4. 55/4 have no long term status here (going to be traded), so DH is nipping this shit in the bud
5. DH would rather play Orlov (who’s acquitted himself well) and Kundratek (sp?) who are young and impressionable than 55, who is an old ass man at 26, and going to be traded.
6. Semin for Doughty and Schultz for Bolland, so don’t worry!

If Knuble ever wants to not be on the 4th line when Nicky comes back he sure isn’t showing it. Only one point in the few games he has gotten and that horrible play in his own zone.
I would love to be wrong on him and only wrote that because I was tired of seeing everyone talking about Knuble being treated like Jeff Schultz, getting no time when doing nothing wrong. While I would love to have him get another 20 goal season I don’t think that happens no matter what line we have him on and all he seems to do of late is drag down a top line if he is on it. Many players have to change their game as they get older and slower and Knuble needs to adjust to being with lesser skilled players and adjust to that because he cannot be on a top 2 line long term.
