Yet Bourque’s goal output has been remarkably consistent. Back-to-back 27-goal seasons and right on course for that range this season. Those are really quite good numbers for an enigmatic in-and-outer.
I could not possibly be more frustrated with people using season totals as evidence of “consistency.” Last year Bourque started the year hot as balls. It was at the point where Chris Burton had him on his “untouchable” list for his fantasy team. Then what happened? Bourque disappeared and limped his way to 27 goals. If he was really consistent maybe he’s a 35 goal scorer, right?
Please, call me F&B.
I prefer using post post-season totals when I am discussing consistency. The fact that Rene Bourque has a + 12 handicap while Cammy has a + 7 handicap is much more of a glaring issue. Add to the fact Bourque has had more time to upgrade his skills the last couple Aprils than Cammy makes this more inexcusable.

The Bourque elbow still sticks in my craw, but sending in an enforcer gives me a hollow feeling in my gut ever since reading the peice on Boogaard and I’d hate for the retaliation to come back to bite the Caps.

The Senators are on fire right now, and I feel like Paul MacLean has to have really serious consideration for the Jack Adams. I mean, who thought they’d be any good at all? I know STL has turned it around with Hitchcock, but NOBODY saw this coming out of Ottawa. I thought they’d be a lottery team.

I personally think the Sens will have problems sustaining their success. Granted, they were hot 2 years ago and made the playoffs (and were bounced by the Pens in Round 1). However, they were supposed to be in a rebuilding year and had gotten rid of Mike Fisher last trading deadline.
There are several teams in the EC with unexpected success this year who might have trouble sustaining it.

Buy or sell: One of the main problems for the 09-10 Caps was the lack of adversity during the regular season. The 11-12 Caps will be stronger than they would have been otherwise for having gone through the early-season adversity that they have endured.

Buy the first part, sell the second part. At this point, they’ve faced enough adversity. The problem is, they’ve never really overcome any of it, so they’ve got nothing to point to when times get tough.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Perhaps they are in the process of overcoming adversity. We are, after all, only just now entering the second half of the season and the Alexes are warming up. If they can get through the Green/Backstrom injuries with some solid wins and inch up in the standings a bit, I will have a renewed optimism for sure.

I’ll buy on the problem, but hold on the conclusion a bit.
We know that our two #1 seeds have resulted in bubkus and those two years the #7 and #3 seed (with fourth highest points) in the East made the finals. In the West those two years, the #2 and #1 seed made the finals, but the #1 seed lost. Thus, I’m not worried about the seeding, if they make the playoffs.

The comments in the article said it is common at Steeler’s games, and I witnessed two fights walking out of the Winter Classic last year.
I am the first to laugh at the Penguins, but I will say that I wore my Carlson jersey last year around Pittsburgh for a few days, including tailgating, and at the Classic, and nary a thing happened. A lot of good-natured ribbing both ways, but everyone was friendly and I didn’t see anything, even when a couple of drunk Caps fans started shouting.

There were a few fights I saw when I joined a smoker’s circle, but they were just drunk and everyone was good about breaking them up. I was even wearing my Steckel sweater and no one said a thing about the collision.
Of course in the bar afterward, someone chickenwinged my friend who was sitting at the edge of the bar but that guy was also drunk, but his friends made up for it and bought us some IC lights.
Everyone up there was really nice, very accommodating. If things actually became heated, someone would just start a “Flyers suck” chant and everyone could rally around a common enemy. I heard that once at some seafood restaurant, and then of course at the game. That was fan-tastic.
Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:

I’m guessing he would be as appalled as anyone who reads this. The guy is a hack but I’m assuming he’s also human.
If the insinuation is that shit like this only goes down in Pittsburgh, sadly that’s not the case. Bad behavior happens everywhere, perhaps not to this extent, but it happens everywhere, even at VC.
My question, based upon reading this account, is where were the other people who were watching this go down? I’m no hero myself but if I saw a guy (or girl for that matter) punching a pregnant woman like that I’m pretty sure I’d be the third man in on that beat down. That these guys were able to get after her once is bad enough, but how did people let them get a second crack at her?

I always thought the way you stated and then I was involved in a situation where some random guy was hitting his wife/girlfriend in public and I stopped it. It’s scary as fuck to do and a lot easier to say you would do it. This was at a mall full of people and I was the only person who did anything. basically the guy punched this girl and then grabbed her hair and pulled her to the ground and was screaming obscenities at her. anyways this is trending OT so I’ll stop with this. It’s very hard to actually do something in that situation and obviously the vast majority of people won’t for typically 2 reasons, fear or voyeurism

Palmateer
Back when dinosaurs ruled the earth, Palmateer played in goal for the Leafs and Caps. IN 1980-81, as a Cap, he set a NHL record for assists with 8, which was amazing until Grant Fuhr blew that away with 14 in 1984-85 with the great Oilers.
To give you a perspective, All Star Milan Michalek, Mike Knuble, Dustin Penner, and Jeff Carter (I know he’s hurt, just sayin’) are on pace to get 14 assists this year.

There was chatter the other day from Orpik about “not waiting for guys to come back” — I think PD had a story about it. It has been absolute radio silence on Crosby since Dec. 12? Again, this is third-hand speculation, but there were some people suggesting he has been medically cleared but didn’t feel comfortable personally returning. If that’s the case, I can understand why certain elements would be looking for more leadership in the room. At the same time, as much as I dislike Crosby by virtue of his colors, you can’t fault a guy for being careful with his life — this isn’t a twisted ankle, this is his head, and we’ve seen that it may have consequences long into the future. In addition, he’s never struck me as a guy who shied away from challenges. He’s not a big guy but he takes the most contact of anyone and there’s never been a story of him failing to lead so much as a trip to the kitchen. Fairly surprised that the tide is turning (if true).

No argument here. Can’t imagine what the stories would have been like if last year during the Caps’ 8-gamer Ovi was out and there were rumblings that he was healthy enough to play but being overly cautious.
In your opinion, if Crosby goes on LTIR, who gets the C? Or does it stay with him?

by Alz Well That Ends Well on Jan 13, 2012 10:40 AM EST up reply actions
You only put a player on LTIR if you need the cap space. Whether a player is on LTIR or not shouldn’t impact the locker room dynamic/team dynamic. I can understand why players are tired of being asked questions by the media. It’s a team, not one injured player.
I meant putting him LTIR in the sense that they would basically acknowledge that he’s done for the year, and people would stop peppering them with questions about when/if/is he coming back. I think it would do a lot to get the media off that particular track.
Actually, I think if I were on that team I would WELCOME the Crosby questions. It keeps the media off their ass for (a) not beating anyone who’s any good, and (b) taking an absolute nose dive in the standings at the moment.

I think being asked the same question day after day, regardless of the question, would be tiring and annoying.
LTIR is a cap related move, it doesn’t send a message to the team, especially if the player is eligible to return due to the retroactive nature of assigning a player to LTIR. Crosby’s last game played was 12/5/11 .
I don’t know but I hope it gets dramatic and ugly.

I really don’t know what to make of the line-up decisions. Again tonight, looks like no 30, no 4, no 55 and now 50 in place of 85.
- No 30 – I understand, but eventually he needs a start. Perhaps either half of the NYI/MON back-to-back next week?
- No 4 and no 55 — Seems like permanent residence in the doghouse, especially when you consider 36 and 81 in the line-up
- 50 in place of 85 — This I don’t understand. I’ve never been a fan of 85, but I think Cody is better served playing 20 minutes a night for Hershey than the minimal amount he’s going to play for the Caps.

I guess 85, but really it’s only because of the waivers issue. I don’t think either have been great, and certainly neither is the difference between winning and losing.
I’d rather see Eakin get big minutes in HER as well.
Please, call me F&B.
Agreed. Give Eakin more productive, developmental minutes withe the Bears in a Top 6 role rather than limiting his minutes on the 4th here.
Again I use this argument to say we give those minutes instead to a AHL vet with NHL experience such as Ryan Potulny, who can score a bit and is good in the dot etc.

Last year MP had 14 points in 35 games, he has 7 in 26 games so far this year. What’s really off is his shot total – 41 last year vs 15 this year. Ice time down 3 min per game this year though.
10 of his 14 points last year came in 5 multipoint games. This year, he only has 2 points since october.
All I get from this is that he’s terribly inconsistent and occasionally shows flashes that keep him up here. He’s not really a regular factor on offense.
Would not be surprised to see Neuvy start Sunday afternoon. Carolina is one team he’s done very well against.

As a fairly new resident of the X-burbs, has this ever been done for Caps games? 33 miles from the VC (15 miles to the nearest metro) gets taxing over a season.

Eh, with Metro making it easy (even more so when the Dulles trains open), I don’t see how much longer a “taxi concept” is feasible.
That said, I can attest that leaving at 4 to get downtown by 530 has gotten real taxing for this STH.

Well, it might work better for Nats Park than the VC. Only having one line at the site, and not exactly one of the bigger stations, limits it some.

I leave work at 330, have to run all the way back up to Catonsville to grab the missus, and the drive all the way back down through rush hour traffic to hit either CP or Greenbelt. We can barely make it by 7 when we do get lucky enough to get tickets.

There won’t be metro stations as far away as Ashburn or Leesburg but I agree that when the Reston and Dulles stops open, many more fans in the outer suburbs will be able to ride the metro.

Was talking with some of my friends that I don’t know how people who live in the suburbs make it to the games and back out.
On weeknights, I stay late in town and go directly to VC. I metro back to Virginia after, then drive to Loudoun County. If I scribble that night, I get to bed around 12-12:30. Did I mention I get up at 4:00 each weekday morning? On weekends, I drive in.
But I’ll tell ya. After doing this for the last 15 years, it is starting to get old. And with an HD TV, a comfy recliner, colder beer, better food, and no commute staying home, (not to mention I’m not wild about the whole “experience” at VC) my days as an STH are numbered.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Absolutely. I’ve never been an STH myself, but I just know the hassle of going to 41 home games a year would make me end up hating it after a while. I’m just not sure the “arena experience” is worth it any longer.

Taking away 90% of the people ;)
But seriously, it’s just the whole “hassle” of having to traverse crowds of people, pay 20 dollars for a small amount of food, ride the train to and fro, have to deal with all the headaches the next day because the music is so loud and blast-y. I’ve never been much into the whole “dog and pony show” experience of sports, and I’d just like to watch the game in peace.

Strategic planning. First off, this is only my fourth season as a STH, so it’s not old yet.
Secondly, I plan up front that I’m not going to all 41. It’s just too many, and especially as the calendar swings into tax time, I start selling off a bunch. I’ve probably averaged around 25 games per season; sometimes the tickets go to a combination of family members that doesn’t include me.
Third – ear plugs. It was my husband who used them first, but they really do help tone down the ambient noise without drowning out the announcements. Or the people talking to me directly.
And fourth – I try to eat before the game. If it means a sandwich in the car on the way to Metro, so be it.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
We do the same thing. Plan out the games we will attend and sell the rest. It really is too hard to go to all of them, especially with a child. And we try to eat before the game.
We are still newish STH so the arena experience is still fun. Despite my meh-ness before the Pens, the game itself was fun to attend. And I’m really good at getting people to not lean etc. etc. (including a guy wearing a blue #87). But I have to admit I enjoy watching at home stretched out on the couch all comfy from the gas fire and with a beer in my hand.
Knuble: "I am what I am. I play well with good players."

No gas fire, but I’ll be on the couch probably with a beer tonight. This four games in seven days was a bit much, so we picked one and sold it.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Four home games was hard for us too but thought tonight was a go until son got sick. Then egads—we discovered that we were out of beer. So hubby made caipirinhas. Very nice. Warm and toasty inside and out. Now we just need a fun Caps game.

Did you ever find someone to sell today’s tickets to, with the son being sick?
I’m a relatively new STH, as in 3rd full year and a several game plan the year before that. I’ll admit our game going was on “hold” while the kids were growing up and we were so busy with their activities. We had never gotten season tickets before — too hard to commit to going to the old Capital Center in MD.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
I’ve been to more Caps games this year than any year past – and I’ll probably end up going to about 20 total. There are aspects of the game-day experience that bother me a lot: I don’t like the in-arena promotions; I don’t like the excessively loud music; I don’t like the leaners; I don’t like the expensive food and beer. While I don’t have kids, and I live and work close to the VC, a change in either of those circumstances would probably dull my enthusiasm for the games even more.
There is, however, one thing that will forever keep me coming back: I don’t think I can ever get tired of watching hockey live. It’s such a different experience than watching on TV: you get to see plays develop, the game seems to move more quickly and fluidly than on television, and big moments feel bigger due to the presence of thousands of other cheering souls.

Arena Experience
They do a good job – the new FM radio addition adds to my enjoyment. I could give a hoot about the red rockers, all the video board stuff, the music, etc. Just keep the on-ice product good.
bottom-line: It’s the winning record and a good team that keeps most fans coming back.
Let’s walk for a moment…
We start by getting on Metro. Trains might be on time, trains might not be on time. Anyway, at 6:00 it’s a crush.
Then there is getting out of Metro. Escalators might work, they might not. Ditto for elevators.
We come out of the station are are greeted by….THE TICKET SCALPER GAUNTLET! “Got tickets? Huh? Got tickets? Who needs tickets? Selling tickets? Huh, huh?”
Then we get the pat down/peek inside and the ticket gate lineup.
For those of us inclined to get refreshments before entering the seating area, we fumble around for our 1040’s for the last three years, out pay stubs for the last quarter, and documentation of citizenship so we can get a loan for a beer and a bag of popcorn.
Then there is the…“what? I can’t hear you over the music? WHAT?! WHAT?!”
There is the insipid in-game entertainment (you can’t make up the fact that a firm called “intelligent solutions” sponsors a game where people thrust their hands up or to the side, and there is no prize for winning this “game”)
There there is the stoppage of play, none of which shall go without WHAT? WHAT? I CAN’T HEAR YOU OVER THE MUSIC?"
There is, of course, the perpetually disappointing product on the ice…the whole object of the exercise.
Then there is getting home on aforesaid Metro, where the escalators work or not, and we wait on the edge of the platform for a train that will be here in 18 minutes.
I could go on, but now I’m depressed…
If you've read this far...seek help.
I don’t remember it being so loud I can’t hear, but I’ve always had nosebleeds. Maybe it’s louder down below. If it were quiet I think I’d be even more concerned.
I’ve driven to Verizon and usually don’t have any problems going to or fro.
One thing I would like change is the screen telling me when to cheer and make noise, but it could be I’m old, tired and grumpy. I’ll make my noise when I damn well feel like it.
I would like the food to be better for the price. The pizza is horrible.
"One of the most difficult things everyone has to learn is that for your entire life you must keep fighting and adjusting if you hope to survive." -George Allen
As a daily metro rider I think I’ve just become numb to the crowds, delays, broken escalators, etc. I deal with it so often I think I’ve just gotten used to it being the norm. I get annoyed, but metro has worn down my resistance. It’s the best method for me to get to work. As for the game experience..well, we don’t buy concessions because they’re expensive and we check twitter during the TV and intermission breaks. I guess that stuff doesn’t bug me because I completely ignore it, sometimes at the expense of noticing that the game is about to start again.

Note to Peerless
We live in Ashburn and are part of the “STH faithful”. I’ve had to sell-off some this year – more than usual. I’ll keep coming back as a STH — so long as the “on-ice product” is reasonable.
Also, not a fan of the “game experience” thing – We just want a good game.
But you can’t kick about the Caps home record over past 4 years, though.
Have been to every game but 1 so far this season and I’ve hit the wall.
Gave my tickets to friends for tonight and sunday. Between Caps and Hoyas have felt like I’ve been hanging out at Verizon more than enough.
Gonna enjoy the HD and a few beers at home.
Gonna enjoy the HD
It’s on CSN+ tonight, so I hope you have a cable/satellite company that gets that channel in HD (mine doesn’t).

Lots of precision and hope that traffic cooperates. We live right next to a metro station so we can just hop on a train and be at VC in 35 minutes. We used to live away from a metro station and it was an awful experience just getting to work, which wasn’t even as far as VC; I can’t imagine the hassle to get VC and back.

Metro to Loudoun County
Supposedly with the Second Phase, Metro will have a stop near 267 & Loudoun County Parkway – which is in Ashburn.
I live in Germantown, work in Herndon
On weeknights, like tonight, I leave the office at about 4:30 or so and drive to Grosvenor Metro. If my wife is meeting me at the game, she’ll catch the train at Shady Grove and then we’ll meet at Grosvenor. If not, then I just get on the train and head into downtown.
On weekends, I usually go in to the game from Shady Grove, but it depends on track work. Occasionally there’s work between Shady Grove and Grosvenor so I’ll drive into Grosvenor. If there’s work further along the line, I may go over to Greenbelt to get the train in.
