Via The Pensblog, some Crosby angst.
Last night, Madden, at Dan Bylsma’s postgame press conference asked Bylsma flat out about Sid. Bylsma’s answer was shaky at best.
And today on his radio show Madden laid the Penguins and Crosby out.
To be fair, and we are 110% with him on this, he started of by saying he loves the Penguins, but he hates what is going on right now.
Bingo.
A quick paraphrase of what else he said:
The Penguins need to answer two things. 1.) Is Crosby cleared. 2.) What were the results of his latest test.
He said the feel in the locker room is that Crosby should be playing.
He basically said, in no uncertain terms, that the Penguins are bigger than Sidney Crosby, and that is not how it looks.
He called on any member of the Pens organization or “Crosby’s” team to answer the question.
It wasn’t a personal attack on Crosby, he said Sid’s a good guy, just thinks Crosby isn’t playing because he doesn’t feel right.
Weird.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Are they suggesting that Sid is cleared to play but is refusing to get back into the lineup? If a guy with a head injury doesn’t feel right then he should not play, regardless of what the doctors say. This is not like a bad knee or shoulder where you might want the guy to suck it up and play for the good of the team. Really not sure what these guys are getting at.

hahaha, Mark Madden is an idiot. The man recently blasted a user on twitter, telling her basically “you’re a woman, your opinion doesn’t matter, bet back on the pole”. Keep in mind his background is in professional wrestling, much like the tpb staff.

Madden also claimed during the Sandusky scandal that the Second Mile chairty was to farm out little boys to weathly Penn State donors. At best he’s a troll and makes all kinds of shit up, at worst he has a very serious mental illness.

Without going too far down that road, Madden is by no means the only person that discussed that possibility. The guy is a bomb thrower, that’s not new. At least he usually keeps his bombs local.

February 6, 2011, if I’m not mistaken. They had the same number in the meeting after that, then two with a Pens edge, then last night.

I dunno, but they should have had at least two more. Malkin blatantly tripped up Brooks Laich on a drive to the net, and then chopped Alzner’s stick in half. Both within a few minutes of each other in the first.

Shove or not, it was a penalty...
Rule 69 Interference on the Goaltender
If an attacking player has been pushed, shoved, or fouled by a defending player so as to cause him to come into contact with the goalkeeper, such contact will not be deemed contact initiated by the attacking player for purposes of this rule, provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact.
(Emphasis mine…)
Even if Kennedy was pushed towards Vokoun, he has to make a reasonable effort to avoid, otherwise it is a penalty. Wideman may have bumped him a little, but Kennedy used the bump to propel himself onto Vokoun, hence the call.

I have to say, I really didn’t not feel like the refs had that game under control in the first. I was expecting fireworks in the second, and a whole lot of “hmmmm, how many guys will be left to play the third?” They really clamped down on the extracurricular activities in the 2nd and 3rd. not that they called penalties, but the game had the potential to explode.

That is a good point, but I suspect that a lot of the hotel and restaurant business for the folks making hte pilgimage to Michigan will be in the Detroit area. Ann Arbor is 45 miles from Detroit, but this is not quite like the 45 minutes between DC and Baltimore. I am waking up this morning still wondering if I dreamed Milbury and Jones effusively praising Ovechkin after last night’s effort and for his turnaround. Pierre joined in post-game.
Someone asked on Twitter or the 3P thread whether Malkin would be criticized for his give-away that started the rush to Chimera’s goal, because no doubt Ovechkin would have been. Well, yes, yes he was. The boys at NBC let Malkin have it for trying to go through four people and trying to do too much.
Of course, when these guys do the Caps-Pens Sunday afternooner in a few weeks, they could turn it right back around.

Admittedly, I didn’t see the first, and I thought the second was a good defensive play by the Penguin sliding over.

The Pens D slid over but Semin got the shot through unmolested, he just shanked it wide. The first was an even more obvious empty net.
Please, call me F&B.
He had an all around bad game (until very late) in my estimation. Seemed like he quit on the play a couple of times, but I also tend to not track how long someone’s been on the ice.

it infuriates me when he follows a guy to the boards, trys to poke check, then peels off in the opposite direction and skates away. I know he’s not a hitter, but he’s not even going to lean into the guy?

Article
This article is an interesting read about how to compete in the Eastern Conference given Bruins “dominance”:
http://www.theprovince.com/sports/hockey/canucks-hockey/Gallagher+Boston+Bruins+tough+minded+style+successful+change/5981430/story.html
A little too early to anoint the Bruins as a dynasty but given the copycat nature of the league, not too far-fetched to see this happening.
Once teams realize that the trend may in fact be reversing and going back to the future, and that they’ve got to up their toughness factor, every guy whose ever played organized hockey and has had a year whereby he’s piled up more than 100 minutes in penalties will have a job in the NHL. And no matter how many rules the league might have, you get that much toughness on the ice at the same time you are going to have some issues because these guys need to justify their spots on the roster and the only way to do that is to start making big hits or throwing down the gloves.
Right now the Bruins are going through teams so easily because most of their opponents are ill prepared for their skill and physical nature. And some are even just flat out terrified, that whitewash of Florida a couple of weeks back the best example. If they win a second Cup, next year you can be sure more teams will be prepared.
$20 says you could find an article written in 2007 that said the same thing about the Ducks.

I’d be willing to bet that every guy who has every had 100 PIM and has skill is already in the NHL. They seem to overlook a pretty big part of that equation.

You see Johansson lose his edge as he had a break down the wing last night? It was part of Orpik’s intermission highlight package by Versus but they completely ignored that Johansson had a lane and lost it when the ice flaked on him.
Please, call me F&B.
Happened a couple of times in the same place; I think Ovechkin wiped out right there.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
I’m sure that’s right and the author goes a little overboard. But I don’t think the Anaheim and Boston teams are that similar. Anaheim had a few skill players, a bunch of thugs, Pronger/Neids, and a very hot goalie. I think Boston has a lot more depth of guys who can hit, fight/agitate and play the game, in addition to having strong D/goal tending. The Boston model to me is a much more sustainable one, though finding those kinds of players is far more difficult than loading up on thugs.

Couple of articles I just stumbled upon from ’07 (before they won the Cup, in fact):
Anaheim Ducks: The Ducks’ toughness goes beyond their league lead in fighting majors. They have some size up front, and Chris Pronger was the 800-pound gorilla of last season’s playoffs. He’s 6-6; he can have a grizzly-like presence in a seven-game series. Dustin Penner is 245 pounds. Travis Moen has toughness, as does Brad May, Sean O’Donnell, etc. The list goes on and on because general manager Brian Burke believes in tough teams. [Link]
A man chiefly responsible for that is Anaheim GM Brian Burke, whose club leads the league in fighting majors on purpose. As one of the most progressive and successful GMs in the league, Burke sees merit in intimidation even in today’s gutless NHL, where the lack of respect is glaring.
“You come to a square dance in our barn and you shouldn’t have any problems finding a partner,” said Burke on TSN Wednesday, who was then asked if he’d dress Parros in the playoffs.
“It depends who we’re playing. Those who say fighting is dead in the playoffs didn’t watch any of our games.
“We fought in all three rounds last year and we plan on doing it again this year as far as we go.”
That’s the spirit.
This from a former league disciplinarian who knows the only ones who can protect skilled players are their teammates — not the NHL. [Eric Francis, y’all!]

I have actually been tracking this all season, as a way to keep myself level-headed. The nosedive the Caps took at the end of Bruce’s tenure/start of Dale’s put them off the pace by 3 (and then 4), but they’ve hit the 6 in the other 2 5-game sets under Dale. If they can improve even slightly, they should make that 98/99 point total.

Chicago/Winnipeg back to back is rough. Same time zone, but they leave Chicago, fly up there, go through customs in Winnipeg, then get to the hotel. Making it worse, the game in Chicago starts at 7:30 PM local time, and the game in Winnipeg starts at 6 PM local time.
Figure the game in Chicago ends at 10:15, shower, dress, press, get packed, they’re out of the United Center at 11:15. On the plane at midnight, fly up to the ‘Peg, landing at about 1:30 AM. Get to the hotel at 2:15 AM. Probably an optional morning skate, but they’re on the ice for the game in less than 16 hours….

Looked quickly and didn’t see it specified in the CBA (I only skimmed it), but there’s a mention about the game times and the Competition Committee reviewing/agreeing to start times.
Inspired by Dirk’s post above about the upcoming schedule for the Caps and Kitties.
Caps have games in hand on the teams they are chasing right now: Florida (1), Toronto (1), New Jersey (2), Ottawa (3). Oddly enough, they cannot catch Florida and Toronto with that game, but can catch NJ and OTT.
They continue to hold that ROW tie-breaker over all those teams they’re chasing.
Nipping at the Caps heels: Pittsburgh (same number of points, but Caps have less GPs and superior ROW), Winnipeg (1 less point, 1 more game played), Buffalo (5 less points, one more game played)
This month, the SUPER FANTASTICALLY IMPORTANT games: at Pit on the 22nd, and vs. Boston on 24th. The remaining games are against teams that i think are essentially out of the playoff race at this point—Carolina (twice), Tampa (twice), Montreal, and NYI.

yep, sorry it wasn’t clear. here’s the breakdowns, as of this morning:
Florida, 50, 42 gp, 19 ROW
Ottawa, 52, 44 gp, 19 ROW
New Jersey, 50, 43 gp, 16 ROW
Toronto, 49, 42 gp, 19 ROW
Washington, 46, 41 gp, 21 ROW
I’m going to over-simplify here, but if the teams above the Caps were to be idle and the Caps played and won their games-in hand, the comparisons would be:
Florida 50 points, Washington 48 point
Ottawa 52 points, Washington 52 points (superior ROW)
New Jersey 50 points, Washington 50 points (superior ROW)
Toronto 49 points, Washington 48 points.

I’m not sure it’d be possible for me to have less sympathy…
Buffalo Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff knows Patrick Kaleta has a reputation throughout the NHL.
Now he’s concerned that reputation is affecting Kaleta’s ability to play the game.
After watching Kaleta receive two charging penalties in three games — calls he deemed questionable — Ruff told reporters he thinks Kaleta has a target on his back.
"Kaleta just can’t hit anybody anymore. He can’t," Ruff told the Buffalo News. "Everytime he hits somebody it’s a penalty. He knows that. He can’t hit anymore."
…

Sniff…
Just a coach trying to get some reverse mojo with the refs. I get that. But stop with the “he can’t hit anyone anymore” bs. He can’t hit anyone anymore outside rules. He naturally gets a shorter leash w/ refs due to his own past history. Boo hoo. Alex Semin says….well, nothing, but if he would say something he’d probably say “welcome to my world” in Russian.
Ruff need to look no further than Matt Cooke for his answers. Matt Cooke has been able to change his rep this year (so far) and seems to be getting a fair shake from the refs. He can and does hit people without penalty because he’s doing it within the rules…again, so far.

This is very discouraging. One assumes that the symptoms were not as troubling last week, his tests were inconclusive, they assumed migraines and he worked out with the team as usual.
Then, after flying across the country and working out again, the symptoms worsened or changed and they came to the conclusion that the symptoms were of a concussion, not a migraine.
Why oh why did they not treat it as a concussion from the start? Didn’t they watch that replay?
That’s basically what I saw. If I remember correctly, Whyno tweeted that Backstrom had some testing done, which is why he was late getting to the ice.
Failure is always an option.

Ever watch him in the pre-game warm-ups? It’s my favorite thing, he strolls slowly up and down the red line staring at the other team for about two minutes – I don’t know if he’s doing it to intimidate them or just to scope out the competition or if he’s not even aware of what he’s looking at, but it’s pretty badass.

Can I just say that I really hope last night was the last time we have to see the 8-90-28 line (even though I know that’s too much to hope for until Backstrom’s back)? They were better as a unit in the third for sure, but overall I wasn’t impressed with how they connected.
I think 90 and 28 have good chemistry and I think 90’s done a respectable job as Ovechkin’s center in the past, but it seems to me that when Johansson and Semin are together they really need someone like a Brouwer or a Knuble or even a Laich on the wing creating space (a role which Ovechkin shouldn’t be relied upon to fill), and when Ovechkin and Semin are together they really need someone like Backstrom to control the play and keep possession of the puck (and Johansson, as much as I adore him, is no Backstrom).
Maybe it’s just me, I don’t know. The three of them together just have a tendency to get overly cutesy; that kind of thing is frustrating enough when it’s 8-19-28 but at least I feel like Backstrom grounds that line a bit and maintains at least some semblance of control. Again, I love Johansson but he’s not great at the possession thing…and has a Semin-esque tendency to fall down all by himself, which can be a problem. Especially when he’s skating WITH Semin.

Perhaps it may be related to Ovi’s apparent new ‘style.’ That is, it has been a great pleasure over the past couple of games to see Ovi pick it up, even if his scoring isn’t going through the roof. The most important thing is that he has his legs back and is making things happen. What this seems to mean, though, is that he is carrying the puck a lot more as opposed to going into the 0-zone and then waiting for Nicky to get him the puck as in the past. If this is true then perhaps he doesn’t need a classic center who possesses and distributes the puck. Instead he is doing a lot of it himself so everyone else on his line should just follow his lead and get open. In other words, MarJo is doing just great but maybe when he is with Ovi he should play like a wing, not a center. This is a nice ‘problem’ to have and is certainly not an ‘issue.’

And yet they were the only line that was remotely threatening.
It’s a tough problem. As flawed as MJ90 is right now, he’s the only option for a top 6 C. So he automatically is going to be with one Alex. Semin seemingly needs a legit C to do anything, so if you split him off that line it’s a waste. AO hasn’t been able to carry a line on his own lately, so putting him with Laich or Halpern as the C doesn’t sound promising.
Just get Nick healthy and slap Rene Bourque in the face with a sock full of poop.

I feel like we should give them time to work this out. I’m sure it won’t be an issue for long.

It was mentioned that Milbury and company were uncharacteristically positive toward Ovechkin last night. I couldn’t see the game and comments. Does anyone know where the commentary could be found?

ASG stuff trickling out, NHL really needs marketing 101 lessons
Even if I don’t care much about ASG stuff, this is silly.
With all the talk about Ovechkin vs Backstrom, has anyone mentioned the possibility of Orlov getting a young star invitation? Doubt it, given how few are selected, especially dmen, but curious. I assume they are doing the young star participation in the skills event as they have recently.
Vogs says Ovi and Wideman with the ASG invites.

What a weird way this is all being released; from the random twitter announcements to now.
And here’s the NHL release I have seen: odd.
Is there a complete list somewhere; this is just a write-up and doesn’t include Wideman, as Vogel reported.
I don’t know nearly enough about hockey. I learning by coming to these boards every day.
But the reason I come to these boards, the reason lots of new Washingtonians care about hockey, the reason mites all over North America have gotten into hockey and wear number 8 is due to the charisma and awesome talent of Alex Ovechkin.
He is having an off year, but nonetheless, the league would be making a huge marketing blunder by not including him. The All Star Game has to attract the casual fan, as well as the avid ones, and Ovi brings them in.
OK, the All-Star announcement post is up – go discuss it there, if you would. Thanks!

Rink Etiquette Question
My wife and I just randomly booked a trip to Montreal that coincides with the Feb. 4 Caps game. If I wanted to ask people for advice about visiting Montreal, Bell Centre, etc., would I be able to/should I post a FanShot or a FanPost?

A FanShot is absolutely kosher. Probably not so much a FanPost.

Orange County Register – January 12, 2012
Contributor to Anheim Calling Web Site Found Dead at Computer
An unknown contributer to the Anaheim Calling web site, an Anaheim Ducks fan page, was found slumped over his keyboard today after his mother knocked on the basement door with no response. Police are not saying what the cause of death was, but are deeming it suspicious. Sgt. Steve Simmons of the Orange County Sherriffs departments said, "guys who spend alot of time at computers in their mom’s basements don’t usually just drop dead like this. "
There are no leads in the case, but sources confirm the man, who appeared to be between the ages of 16-44, was posting a question on a rival team’s fan site when he apparantly flopped in mid-post. Police are searching for the Managing Editor of the rival site who some claim has the ability to reach through his computer and use some sort of voodoo magic to punish people who post inappropriate comments on his site.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

Haha
I’m still alive, don’t worry:) I actually meant to delete that post, lol.
What I meant to say: Someone in this thread (several comments above) argued that the 2007 Ducks were a ‘thug’ team, and compared them negatively to the 2011 Bruins. I just wanted to push back against that claim – in fact, both teams were built in a very similar way (gritty forwards who could fight and score, excellent defense and goaltending, etc)
You guys are hilarious, by the way. And dcsportsfan1 – who should be looking for a woman between the ages of 16 and 44 – has way too much on his/her hands:)

The Vokeswagon playing the puck behind the net
Interesting to hear Hunter and Vokoun talk about his playing the puck more and that Bruce had told him earlier in the year not to play the puck.
Vokes now going to play the puck more which seems to take some pressure off the D and helps them get hit less.
Interesting to hear Hunter’s take on this and I’ll be interested to see if this has an impact going forward.
yikes. I think Vokes is terrible playing the puck. I scream. I have heart attacks. I tear out my hair. I sacrifice small children to the hockey gods in hopes that Tomas Vokoun will not leave the crease.

Last night my row had me and one of the kids I used to coach (grew up in Pittsburgh so he’s a Pens fan) sitting next to a couple (male Caps/female Pens). It was a constant “WTF is he doing out of the net?/YES YES he’s out of the net again!”.

I was convinced that the game with ultimately hinge of which goalie made the bigger bonesheaded mistake behind the net. was not to be.
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$908.82!
Emerick and Eddie O said during the broadcast that the Pens were deliberately shooting wide sometimes to get Vokoun out of the net to play the puck. Hey, if their goalie can leave a net wide open so can the Caps’ right?

Goalies playing the puck only relieve pressure if they do it well. Last night was a mess for both goalies out of the crease.
Please, call me F&B.
Check out Alzner on LaVar and Dukes today – he talks about how Vokes came to them pregame and said he was going to handle the puck a lot more for them last night, and he says it’s a huge reason they had success not getting pinned in (as much) in the D zone.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Will be interesting to see where this goes…..Hunter seemed very positive on it. Vokes also talked about that being the way he has always played before and that it’s his preferred style.
Specifically spoke how it keeps D from getting hit, etc, and how the goalie can read the play since he can see where the forecheck is better than the d-men.
So that’s the theory, let’s see the execution.
Ha!

Damn. Damn. Damn. Cap and money issues aside, assuming he can’t play in the immediate future (or the longer term, it seems), what are the d-personnel implications? Clearly, Wideman has picked up some of the offense (a lot, actually), but I don’t think he was seen as an intermediate or long term Cap for playmaking or offensive purposes. Which brings us to Carlson who either has to step it up in a big way or GMGM has to get to work. Orlov is going to be good but I don’t think he is going to be a Green-substitute.
What is the history of players being able to come back from these injuries? Any recent players (other than Poti) come back from something this serious?
Wondering if the Caps just keep Green on IR until the playoffs and then try to make a trade at the deadline.

That’s, of course, assuming the Caps even get to the playoffs.
But how confident are we that Ottawa, Winnipeg, Toronto, and the Panthers can maintain their 1st half success throughout the 2nd half? And then there are the Devils, who live by forcing a tie and winning via shootout.

I think Florida and NJ have a better chance than they’re given credit for. Both are decent enough possession teams with goaltending that’s unpredictable and probably below average, if not even worse.
