What part of the Varly interview was revisionist? Where he said he decided to go to CO because it was his fav team as a child?
Eh, he glosses over the whole “I’m going to take my ball and go home” strong-arming of the team. But perhaps the wording in that bullet isn’t completely accurate.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Eh well. Can’t blame a guy for holding out for an undeserved starting job and a huge salary hike when there are teams out there willing to give him that job and $$.
On the scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the classiest way to leave a team, 10 being LeBron and 6 being Kovy. I’d peg him around a 4. I remember a questionable interview where he talked about Irbe and the staff, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt since it was translated.
Varly didn’t give that interview you are referring to, that it was the Russian agent.
Personally I found that article more valuable for the funny April’s Fool’s joke by Ovi and the stories about Hershey and the crazy Caps fans. I don’t think the point of that article was to rehash everything all over again that happened this summer, that’s why it didn’t spend a lot of time on it, plus Varly himself has said he wants to look forward now. I think the point was more to tell the story of his entire career. I wouldn’t expect a Russian paper to necessarily trash him about it anyway, they obviously have different negotiating tactics over there and are still looking at him at the potential #1 goalie for Sochi.
Varly was misleading by leaving out the uncomfortable bits and truncating the time line, but that’s human nature. We forget that which makes us uneasy. And I am always delighted to read Varly interviews and articles. So keep them coming.
Considering the two summer trades I’m happy that GMGM traded Varly and Fehr to teams that makes them happy.

From RLD:
It’s an odd phenomenon sometimes in the NHL – a player signs a large contract in the offseason and follows it up with a lackluster season. With his “contract blues” season behind him, there’s no reason to believe that Backstrom will have another disappointing season in 2011-12.
Certainly there are a few….
Plus, I don’t think his contract would make a Top10 list of why Backstrom regressed last season.

I actually tend to disagree. While not at the top of the list, I do think the deal impacted him, especially in terms of his preparation for the season. It’s not at the top of the list, but it’s easily in the top-10.

I was being flippant with “Top 10,” but I’d have an easier time believing the contract was a factor if the whole team didn’t regress.

So who are the 10 teammates that Ovi went to the Opera Ultra Lounge?
So who’s here?
Orlov, Galiev, Hendricks, Backstrom, Johansson, Neuvy, Knuble, Carlson, Alzner, Erskine
(At least those are the guys I’ve heard of being here.)
It appears that Knuble’s kid was working out with them. Or I could see him in the Flickr photostream belonging to Caps Girl.

Reading the KHL President’s comments about Orlov has me wondering: out of the group of Orlov, Kuznetsov, Eakin and Holtby who will have the biggest immediate impact on the club? My first thought is Kuz, but the more I hear about Orlov, the more intrigued I am to see him full-time in a Caps jersey.
Intrigued, perhaps, but I think he’s still got some learnin’ to do in Hershey. Plus I’ve been waiting to see a Carlson/Green/Wideman puck-moving blueline for what feels like forever.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
I would very much like to see Orlov get a look in DC this year. It would make me happy to see him get some of Erskine’s minutes over the course of the season.

Pic of a guy drinking Carlsberg in the clips, and you’re hating on Blue Moon???
"Fais gros comme moi!" - Alex Ovechkin
Eh, don’t like either, but as far as I know Carlsberg isn’t made by people who have a long history of financing hate groups.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
Per Wiki…
Carlsberg was founded by J. C. Jacobsen; the first brew was finished on 10 November 1847. Export of Carlsberg beer began in 1868; foreign brewing began in 1968 with the opening of a Carlsberg brewery in Blantyre, Malawi.4 Some of the company’s original logos include an elephant (after which some of its lagers are named) and the swastika.
So there’s that.

Also, since 2005, Coors is owned by Molson.

Heading way off topic fast, but no, as I understand it, Coors Beer is no longer an entity that anyone but Molson Brewing company can have shares in. It’s a wholly-owned subsidiary from what I’ve seen.
They very likely have shares in Molson. So if you’re agin’ giving money to the Coors family, then don’t buy any Molson products. Which also means no Kilians, no Grolsch, no Caffrey’s, etc. But there’s nothing special about the Coors label in that respect anymore.

Molson’s uneven at best, IMO – a lot of their own-branded products are absolutely horrendous (see, for example, Molson Golden).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Lets not forget this though:
From wakipedia
Molson was founded by James Molson in 1914. The first brew was introduced on April 1, 1915. Some of the companies first logos included a good natured baby seal clubbing, a burning cross, and a middle finger.
Ok, I made that up.
Also awful. All I know is that if I made that kind of cheddar, I wouldn’t be drinking a Coors product.

Ted Leonsis and George McPhee also will speak at Ovechkin’s announcement this afternoon.</blockquote?
That seems unusual for a press conference just to announce which brand of sticks he’s using, doesn’t it? Seems to me this might be a team-wide endorsement deal.

I think Semin is in vapor stuff too… odd that Bauer now has so many Caps on actual endorsement deals. It isn’t uncommon for a bunch of guys to use their stuff (they make good stuff) but it’s odd to have 3 guys from the same team in their ads.

"One of the most difficult things everyone has to learn is that for your entire life you must keep fighting and adjusting if you hope to survive." -George Allen
Generally speaking, Supremes tend to be a deeper and wider boot. They tend to have more of a classic fit. The Vapor line is a bit narrower, taller and shallower. The skates aren’t really an issue, since any NHLer is going to have full custom boots, so they’ll fit perfectly.
More interesting is the gloves and sticks. Vapor gloves tend to be tighter fitting, odd compared to Ovi’s historical choices. The Vapor sticks are also marketed towards the kind of players who who with their arms (the Alex Semin type) whereas the supreme line has more of a mid-kick, designed for guys who bear down on their sticks when shooting (more Ovi’s style).
Of course, there’s nothing stopping Bauer from sending Ovi out with a TotalOne stick dressed to look like a Vapor. It isn’t uncommon among manufacturers to have players use a stick dressed like their latest and greatest, while the stick is really an older or different model from the same manufacturer. Easton is notorious for dressing NHL sticks as S19s that are really SE16s, because so many players love the SE16. It’s pretty obvious when you look at the Easton sticks, because the S19 has a very unique taper.
I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.
I was pretty surprised to see him leave CCM after all the great advertising they put in over the last year….I dont see Bauer having their own Ovi line either…I guess money talks
Check out a new social network, Hockey Connect, a place for coaches, players, family and fans to share strategies and experiences.
I dunno what kind of agreement Nike has with Bauer for cross-promotional stuff, though they certainly have one. I’m thinking Bauer might be doing the hockey side, while Nike picks up the “streetwear” side of the arrangement. Nike already has a bunch of hockey players under contract (Stamlos, Iginla, Eberle, and Schenn among them).
Crosby may have been the best player in hockey when he was healthy, but I have to believe Ovechkin is the most marketable player in hockey.
I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.

should the NHL be held responsible for riots in Canadian cities
I can’t get my head around the jump from polluting industrial processes that produce a given amount of chemicals, to fans in cities (presumably with their own brains and criminal liabilities) as the same process. Maybe this argument makes more sense if you’re a lawyer, but it baffles me.

I don’t see how this would make sense to anyone. A lawyer especially should realize that the connection between the Vancouver riots and companies polluting is completely off base. Polluting companies have agency in the decision to dump chemicals. The NHL has no agency in the decision of a bunch of assholes to go burn cars once they leave the event that the NHL is holding.
The constant theme that the NHL is “causing” or “imposing” (I’d love to know how he arrived at that claim) is also bullshit. I don’t understand the desire to take responsibility out of the hands of the rioters. “It’s not our fault, the Canucks made us flip over that cop car.”

Not sure he’s necessarily wrong, homerism aside. I mean, I know Detroit has been the ageless team for a while now, but it really is an ancient team. I’m not saying they aren’t contenders, because many of those older players just happen to be fantastic, but I don’t begrudge a player questioning if all those guys can stay healthy and at their optimum playing potential.
Of course, you could go the other direction (probably as a Wings fan) and just roll your eyes considering this team’s complete lack of any remote playoff success.

Must be the Pierre McGuire school of player rating: everyone’s awesome, but some guys are more awesome than others.

If Pierre had a hand in it, all player ratings would come with a random fact about the player. eg: DJ King 79, is from Meadow Lake, SK. DJ hails from the Flying Dust First Nation community, which owns NorSaak forest products. Like his family and friends working in the saw mill business for NorSaak, DJ constantly puts his hands in harms way.
I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.
That’s a terrible Pierre impression, you failed to mention DJ’s junior team!

I really should have gone with something about how the DJ played for the Lethbridge Hurricanes, who poorly ripped off the logo of DJ’s Washington Capitals.
It would have been so much more solid… but I think I aptly parodied Pierre’s ability to tie in the most random of facts to hockey.

I think it’s rated on how good you are at your position; for example, that means King is a 79-rated enforcer. Similarly, Schultz is an 83 rated defensive defenseman, and Backstrom would be an 87 rated playmaker.

Still…they inexplicably love Byfuglien’s one great season at D (87) but don’t feel it from JC’s one great year at D (82). Hamrlik’s a top-30 shutdown D and only 82 (Polak got an 81, fwiw). Ward should be mid-80s for what he brings, and not buying Erskine as an 80 considering the Caps’ other D (aside from Green).

Ward in the mid 80s is really, really high for where other players are at. He’s an 81 because his defensive stats are high.
by Charlie Foxtrot on Sep 6, 2011 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Ward’s defensive numbers the last couple of seasons have been elite. In all seriousness, he’s got almost no finish to him (he’s not going to shoot a high percentage, or induce same in his teammates), but he plays unbelievably hard minutes and moves the puck in the right direction, while killing penalties. He’s not overpaid at 3mm a year.

I don’t disagree. But my thoughts on his rating was exactly what you said – his offensive abilities are pretty meh.
Although, EA seems to be putting even mediocre players in the very high 70s, so in that case he should probably be a bit higher.

Ward is a top-end defensive forward, so I think that deserves at least in the 84ish range.

Byfuglien is rated 87?! Wow.
Carlson is presumably an offensive d-man or a two-way d-man, meaning because he didn’t have sparkling offensive stats his rating isn’t that high.

If they’d broken it down, Carlson outscored Byfuglien at ES, 31 to 29. The PP was the big difference, 24 for Byfuglien to only 6 for Carlson.

Arnott’s an 81. Shoulda re-signed him

From the sidebar, Ersk has a busted wing, and may not be ready to go in the beginning of the season. Makes othe depth charts a little goofy, no?
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
if Ersk isn’t ready to go, who is, realistically, fighting for that (presumably temporary) 7th d-man spot?

Collins, PMac most likely. Orlov if he had a great camp.

oh, right, forgot about the other Ohio State product. I suppose he acquitted himself well enough this spring.

Personally, I’d like to see PMac get a shot just to see what we have there.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Should’ve happened last year, but yeah, I agree.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Especially early in the season, you don’t need to scrap for points, you don’t need to get your “playoff squad” ready and firing on all cylinders. You’d think early on with a banged up 7th man would be the time to see what the kid has. I guess a lot of that will depend on how well he acquits himself in camp, though.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Though last year those early wins really helped later on when the sledding got rough.

Likely. Even more curious, when the Caps did call him (PMac) up, they didn’t even play him. Odd.

Well, he was seventh. I guess if he can’t break camp with the team, it’ll be interesting to see who they carry. Guessing Collins, but who knows.

Hey, it’s a fact isn’t it? Lot less pressure on him in Colorado than there would be here. I don’t see the “snap-worthyness” of Ovi’s comments.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
Caps Con panels are out. Some interesting ones, including a panel with none other than Bill McCreary and Brendan Shanahan. behind the scenes on 24/7 looks like a winner too.

Constant injuries, which accompanied me while I played for the Capitals, really got me," says the athlete. "I decided to leave the club.
Anyone else interpret this as there may have been some fire behind Varly’s agent’s shots at the Caps’ medical staff?

Thought provoking. I had chalked up the linkage to the oddities of translating. But maybe his dad and Russian agent really were on the same page as Varly when they blamed the Caps’ trainers for his injury woes.
by capsyoungguns on Sep 6, 2011 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, though I think it’s every bit as likely that his agent or someone else told him what to think about the quality of the medical attention he’d received as that he formulated that opinion on his own. I mean, certainly it couldn’t be his lack of physical preparation that was to blame for his inability to stay healthy now could it?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Right on, but I’m just recalling that when the agent first said those things, we all said it was agent crap. If the player buys into it, I think it’s something a little different than it was before.
One more data point in the assessment of the player and his exit, I suppose.

What about the impact of ice quality on a player with groin problems. Does bad ice effect goalies as much as it does other players?
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
Bad ice should affect skaters more than goalies. Skaters rely on setting hard edges at a higher speed, and softer ice threatens that. Goalies generally have duller edges because they like to slide easier, so having softer ice only makes that easier. If the ice is so soft that it comes up in chunks in the crease then you have an issue with pits in the ice, but at the NHL level the goalie can call for a stoppage of play and have any pits filled in by the refs/linesmen.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
