Is it time?

ok I’m totally kidding on that, I am not actually worried in any way, shape or form but I figured since I was at work at 7am today I had to have some fun.
And now the only goalie left that hasn’t lost a game doesn’t even get a chance to save our season ; )
@TarikElBashir:
#Caps have assigned G Dany Sabourin and C Keith Aucoin to Hershey.
(Both are pending waivers, though)

Almost everyone believes (me in philly included) that the Capitals are the team projected to finish the end of the regular season in the 1st seed.

Shanahan is having a busy week. Staubitz and Wizniewski are both facing disciplinary action, for a check from behind and a check to the head respectively. I’m curious to see how Shanahan deals with a player like Wizniewski who isn’t an enforcer.
My mind is all twisted like a peanut.
Wiz may not be an enforcer, but he sure ain’t no angel (Brent Seabrook).

And Cooke has another questionable hit already. Didn’t take him long to get back into the swing of things. Anyone else think it’s a little odd to see Cooke wearing the “A” for PIT. You’re going to be in the forefront of getting dirty hits out of the game and you reward the guy with the “A” right after a 17 game suspension? I get “standing by your man” but I would think they’d make him show that he actually has cleaned up his act before giving him a letter. Or maybe I’m just sensitive.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Maybe Shanny can take that into consideration as well. He was a great panelist today. Personable and honest.

He’s a great communicator. I think his hiring for the Discipline/Safety position is extremely positive for the NHL, as we’ve already seen with his videos. He confirmed there will be a video for every suspension, and for selected non-suspensions, depending on the incident.

Gosh, I’m being blabby.
McCreary and Shanny also both emphasized that staged fights are crap and need to be out of the game. I’d expect some rulemaking about that sometime soon, depending on NHLPA cooperation.
That'll make your weagle wink!
The pants that bind us should be left behind us.
Any talk about what kind of fights there should be? Any talk about the role of the instigator?
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Yep. Both support keeping the “organic” fights. Shanny said he thinks that it’s a myth that removing the instigator will improve the fighting culture, using his player experience from before the instigator penalty as his reasoning.
That'll make your weagle wink!
The pants that bind us should be left behind us.
No, maybe I was misleading. He thinks it gives fighters a better opportunity to decline.

Oh, ok. I’d love to hear the audio of that. It’s really a tricky issue. If fighting should be used to police, then don’t you have to let some guys police without the instigator threat?
Obviously, this is all speculation.
yeah, it is tricky. He and McCreary both discussed that it will be difficult but they’re working on making progress based on safety first.
OH. And Shanny said there’s nothing worse than seeing a guy turtle during a fight. When the audience started to laugh, he kind of stopped them, saying, really, that a guy is put in that position without consent is not a pretty thing to watch.
That'll make your weagle wink!

One notable statement. He said he thinks it’s horrible that anyone should ask a young man to go out and drop the mitts, putting himself in danger, simply because the game isn’t at the energy level you need.
I don’t think Shanny will do anything drastic. He seems measured in his approach to fixing this stuff.

I hit four panels: GMGM, Shanny and McCreary, Halpy and Brouwer, and the 24/7 Behind the Scenes. Great turnout, lots of laughs. GMGM was incredibly honest, especially describing the timeline and circumstances of the Varly trade, very open about the personal aspects. Huge fan of Shanahan – seems like a great guy for the job he’s in. He’s got a good perspective.
That'll make your weagle wink!
The pants that bind us should be left behind us.
He alluded to some actions by Varly’s dad maybe paying some money to get either the agent or Loko to try to keep his son in Russia. He also basically said that when he knew that he couldn’t get anything back for Varly he faxed all NHL teams to let them know he was open for negotiations. A pseudo-Craigslist post, if you will.

The pants that bind us should be left behind us.
Interesting stuff. Sounds shady, but it’s not the most shocking thing.
So if he didn’t think he could get anything back for Varly, how did he end up with so much?
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Another interesting point re: scouting. He said he had instituted a new system, post lockout, that he wouldn’t elaborate on, but basically incentivized the coaches to deliver higher quality picks in later rounds. He seems pleased about how that’s turned out.

I can’t imagine how this would work?
Thanks so much for the info!
The photos of Halpern smiling look interesting. What were they discussing?
GM was closed-mouthed about the way his scouting incentive system worked, but i imagine it’s bonus-based. He also confirmed they have no full-time scout in Russia, that it hadn’t worked in the past because the scouts were often found working for up to four NHL teams at the same time. Now he has his Swede or Czech scouts go to Russia if necessary.

You’re quite welcome. If you get the opportunity to attend in the future, it’s well worth it.

This sounds very odd about Varly’s dad. I assumed that the Russian agent wanted Varly to stay in Russia so he’d make money off him, but he was maybe paid by Varly’s dad as well? The business with Loko is odd too, because you’d think Varly’s dad would have paid them to trade Varly’s rights to SKA where he wanted to play. Maybe Loko’s GM’s hatred for SKA exceeded the amount of money paid. No wonder why Varly came to the US alone and said he made the decision to go to the Avs without telling his dad or Russian agent. Sounds like he had a bunch of people around him that weren’t looking out for his best interests or paying attention to what he wanted to do. You’d think his dad would try to convince Varly personally to stay in Russia instead of bribing other people to do it, maybe Varly wasn’t listening to him. All very odd.
Thanks for the updates, I missed that panel, it sounds like it was very interesting.
I thought of you when GMGM discussed Varly. It was later (and in a moment of candor) that he said that Varly was returning to his old KHL team. Gave me a chill. GMGM came across as honest and forthcoming, not dissembling, in his answer about the Varly trade. That is the truth as far as he was told by the Varly camp.
Did you attend the goalie panel. Such different personalities. Vokoun came across as quite thoughtful and refreshingly uncanned in his responses. Neuvy was a bit of a smartass, surprisingly funny, Holtby a little embarrassed about his mannerisms, and Olie was awesome and completely pinged Joe B. (he needed to talk less and make fewer jokes).
by capsyoungguns on Sep 24, 2011 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions
I wished I had made it to that panel! Stupid migraine plus a cold together gave me a late start.
Sorry, I am confused about exactly what gave you a chill that GMGM said about Varly going back to his old team? Did McPhee comment on Varly possibly being on that plane?
I went to the panel on being on the road instead of the goalie panel, it was ok but I probably should have gone to the goalie one, that sounds more interesting. I did get to see Knuble get upset about the Grandpa slippers thing though.
by vtcapsfan99 on Sep 24, 2011 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Someone posted part of it below. Knuble had to go to watch his son’s hockey game, but as he was leaving, he said he wanted to give Vogel a hard time for asking the question last year where Knuble said he wore slippers on the plane. He said he got emails calling him Grandpa and people gave him a hard time about that, so he wanted to clear up why he wore the slippers. Not because he was an old man but he didn’t want to step in his teammates’ urine on the floor of the bathroom. He was quite insistent about this being clarified and repeated himself.

This story hit a little close to home though. I yell at my son all the time for his poor aim in the bathroom. When do they grow out of it? Not by their early twenties by the sound of it. Also, who gets to wash Mr. Knuble’s slippers? The hotel staff?

Huh. I thought he was actually the best of ALL the moderators. Kept things moving, and I thought his last series of questions tailored for each of the goalies was great. I noticed the forced nature of some of the jokes, but it didn’t disrupt the nature of that panel.
To be fair, I hope there’s a post-con survey and that everyone shares their thoughts honestly. I personally was bugged that it took about 15 minutes for Joe to even ask about the topic that was actually in the title of the panel…and that he spent a lot more of his energy on being a showman than on moderating the panel participants. His actual questions were good.

Agreed. It seems like Varly’s dad is a helicopter parent in many ways. He did come over to live in Hershey when Varly was there. But Varly wanted to make his own decision (come back to America and go to the Avs.)
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
From the interviews I read, Varly seemed happy to have his dad living with him and cooking for him in Hershey (he was lonely before that). His parents and sister are actually coming to stay with him for the rest of the season in December this year, he is looking forward to it from an interview I gave. I guess whatever his dad did or didn’t do didn’t have any permanent effect on the relationship. Varly moved away at age 13 to Yaroslavl, which is not close to his hometown of Samara. He said he only went back for a week at New Years then in the summer (I got the impression it wasn’t very long in the summer). It’s got to be hard to have your kid leave at such a young age.

Also, while a general information request wouldn’t need a signature, lots of stuff does, and while I’m not a lawyer (nor do I play one on TV or on the Rink), my recollection is that you can’t submit a signature via e-mail as legally binding.
I did find it amusing, though.
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
I saw your pics of him and was surprised he made the appearance. He’s going to be kept busy with all the suspension ruling videos….But great to see him engaged with the fans on this level.
Someone also asked Shanny about how he will handle suspensions/infractions with different levels of players and he gave a great response. He started joking about how it’s all about how much money they make and what kind of stars they are. Then he said, “That’s what you want me to say, right?” And everyone laughed. Seems like he’s determined to be as fair as possible.

We seem to have hit the same panels although I also caught the goalie one. I thought GMGM was quite candid about the Varly trade, including the fact that he wasn’t going to trade him until that morning of July 1st when Varly’s camp confirmed that he was staying with the KHL. I also thought the discussion of the waiver risks should Varly, like Nabby, decide to return was fascinating. And poignant the fact that Varly would have been on that plane with his old team had he returned to the KHL.
by capsyoungguns on Sep 24, 2011 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions
So did this seem to confirm that Varly was serious about the KHL, and that it wasn’t just a negotiating ploy?
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Yes. GMGM said that he was told the morning of July 1st that Varly was definitely going to stay with the KHL. He said that he then turned around and sent a fax to the other GMs saying he was ready to talk about a Varly trade.

Got to see the Ducks @ San Jose last night, and was fortunate that both teams put out a bunch of premier players (in front of backup goalies).
Firstly, HP Pavilion is a really nice venue with great sightlines. My $51 ducket put me in the upper deck, but the steeply pitched grandstand put me right “over” the net the Sharks shot at twice. And shoot they did—at one point early in the third they had outshot the Ducks 36-6 (and outscored them 4-1). Dan Ellis Problems, big time.
The game wasnt even that close; the Sharks were constantly on the PP—including at the start of the 2nd when the Ducks were assessed a minor for delay of game for not appearing in a timely manner for the start of the period. Never seen that ever. Shanny has his zebras in midseason form already.
For the third, I availed myself of a killer seat in the lower bowl right on the goal line ten rows up, thanks to a snoozing HPP usher. And while I didn’t see any goals, I was amused by the SJ fans and their peculiar cheers, notably with the Jaws theme accompanied by fans using their arms to “chomp” the Ducks before a PP began. There was a lot of that, aswell as the Anaheim-customized duck callers employed by what seemed like hundreds of fans in unison, with “Dux sux” raining down during timeouts.
It didn’t help the Ducks’ cause that SJ was dominating them in every facet of the game. A ton of young(er) fans having a good time.
The SJ offense looked solid—Thornton looked pissed off and intense throughout the game. He’s ready.
What really stood out though was the Sharks D, specifically Brent Burns. He’s a beast—and not in the cheeky McGuire vernacular. He destroyed anyone who dared get in his way, highlighted by a crushing pancake hit on Corey Perry in the first 10 minutes of the game. Corey was lucky to get up, frankly, and the tone was set. He is going to be a difference maker for SJ, and coupled with the already formidable Douglas Murray and slewfooting Dan Boyle (who nevertheless can really pick corners in full stride), and SJ has a brick wall on the blueline to go with a deep and balanced offense.
Other highlights: Pavelski is a stud, and a pleasure to watch. Ditto for Marleau. I regretted not seeing Couture, but he was hardly missed. SJ is going to be a super tough out (again) this year; if they get some goaltending, they can take Vancouver out and go to the finals.

Good stuff, I can’t believe you typed that out on a phone.
I would love to see a video of Perry getting lit up by Burns.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Perry actually took a much more dangerous pop at the very end of the second, buried into the boards awkwardly, I think by Marleau. Slow to get up and pissed when he did…
by bigonetimer on Sep 25, 2011 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions
…and, the first hit Burns made was clorox clean. 3 on 3 from the ANA blueline, Perry got a nice touch pass from Ryan and goes down on his off wing and beats whoever it was playing the right side for SJS. Burns tracked him the whole way, came from the left side to the right half wall and just closed him off. Nasty. He can really skate for a big man, too.
Fellow Shark fan/attendee here. Thanks for the write-up. I always enjoy watching them because they are such a quality team like the CAPS. As a CAPS fan first, though, I was hoping last year instead of over paying for Laich, Brouwer, Ward, and, perhaps, Hamrlik that we would have used some of that cash for Pavelski. I have watched him for a couple years now and he would have been perfect – repeat, perfect – as the CAPS 2C. As it is, SJ is loaded with centers and we have been able to work something out at the time. Oh, well.
Pavelski is under contract, so it’d have to be via trade, and considering SJS is “win now,” he would’ve come pretty expensive.
Also, there are people here that would disagree that one or more or all of those players are overpaid. I don’t think Ward is overpaid—elite defensive forwards should be able to make as much as a 2nd line scoring forward—nor do I think Hamrlik is overpaid (top pair D should be able to make $3.5 million).

I’d say only Laich is overpaid of the 4. Brouwer certainly isn’t – he’s right in the range where both Knuble and Fehr are. I agree with you on Hamrlik, and I think Ward is worth it. If Laich can nail down the 3C spot as a shutdown player, he’ll be worth the money.
And I can’t see any way the Caps could have gotten Pavelski from San Jose without vastly overpaying.
My mind is all twisted like a peanut.
‘Overpayment’ is relative when we are talking millions and millions of dollars for playing a game. Nonetheless, I agree that Brouwer is probably about ‘right’ relatively. However, even GMGM admitted Ward was “15%” was overpaid and admitted, as such, about Brooks. Clearly, both of these guys were ‘overpaid’ in the sense that they got those salaries because other teams probably would have grabbed them due to their specific abilities in a limited supply environment. A commitment for 37 year old Hamrlik at $7 million can ONLY be explained by the ‘win now’ criteria. As to Pavelski, I should have said ‘trade,’ but again, in terms of relative values, he might – emphasize, might – have been a bigger bang for the bucks spread out over Brooks and Laich. Who knows?

I recall GMGM saying Ward came in a little pricier than he’d thought, but saying he’s overpaid is kind of, well, not exactly fostering a good relationship with the guy you signed for four years. Link?
and admitted, as such, about Brooks
When?
Clearly, both of these guys were ‘overpaid’ in the sense that they got those salaries because other teams probably would have grabbed them due to their specific abilities in a limited supply environment.
If you’re paying market, are you really overpaying? Only if the market overestimates the player’s abilities. Don’t think that was the case with Ward or Brouwer.
A commitment for 37 year old Hamrlik at $7 million can ONLY be explained by the ‘win now’ criteria.
Or Hamrlik is just a good player right now who can eat top-pair difficulty ice time. He can handle quality and a decent bit of quantity (though not as much as in years past). And if you believe “veteran experience” is worth paying for, then there’s that too.
As to Pavelski, I should have said ‘trade,’ but again, in terms of relative values, he might – emphasize, might – have been a bigger bang for the bucks spread out over Brooks and Laich. Who knows?
No need to emphasize “might.” Little doubt in my mind Pavelski is better value than Laich. But is Pavelski better value than Laich + overpayment that likely includes top-half roster players and possibly Kuznetsov?

Okay… Basically, GM said he watched July 1 go by (during the Varly stuff) and started networking with his other GM contacts, noticing during the Free Agency derby that Vokes was left w/o anywhere to go. He was driving home and called Fishman and said, get the agent on the phone and tell him we’ve got a landing place and a million bucks. Detroit got in on the dealings, but couldn’t give him any assurances, and the “hockey gods” smiled upon us. He chose Washington.
Eh, GMGM told it better. It showed his prescience in anticipating some sort of desperation in the Vokoun camp.

Great info. I was curious about how much information sharing is done between GMs. I find it very interesting that he’d be talking to other GMs and they’d give him enough info that he could figure out that Vokoun had nowhere else to go (or very few options). I had also assumed that Vokoun’s agent contacted GMGM when he didn’t have a suitable deal, but it’s cool that GMGM saw an opportunity and took the initiative.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
He indicated that he was very proactive. He also said that regarding GM relationships, if you are a shifty guy, you don’t last, and that’s why he stays above board.

Yep. McPhee might get the best end of the trade, but I’d bet my life that he won’t be shady about it.

Also, I’m pretty sure that’s what soured him on the Varly stuff, when he heard about what was happening in Russia. Also, pragmatic that he couldn’t get anything back for him if he signed in the K and had to come back through waivers if he decided it wasn’t for him, like Nabby. (Which he mentioned)

I also found it interesting how he totally dismantled the loaded question he was offered on how we landed Wideman for essentially a song. He obviously has a stellar relationship with Tallon and told the story of the trade in a very professional manner and never let it be known that we did indeed get Wideman for zippy.
If GMGM initiated contact then he deserves a lot of credit for Vokoun “falling into his lap.” Maybe if he doesn’t make that call Vokoun settles with DET. Very shrewd move.

Morrisonn waived
Watching the BUF – TOR and the GM there just said they waived ShMO today to help getting under the cap.
Kuz > Hall / Seguin?
GMGM said today that one scout (when talking about how lucky the Caps are with the Russian connection) said that Kuz is better than either Hall or Seguin. Wow.
Additionally, he said he fully expects him here next year. Stated that the player said at the time that he would stay in Russia for 2 years which was no problem since GMGM is not a fan of having teenagers playing.

Agreed…also loved the Esa Tikkanen reference (pretty much called him out saying that was THE moment in the series as we all know) on that damn empty net…glad to know I am not the only one that still has nightmares.
Let’s see — how many teenagers have they had playing for the Caps during GMGM’s reign. Well, we had the last two months or so of Nicky B.; about a day’s worth of MarJo. Well, Alex Semin was a teenager during most of his first year with the Caps, back in 2003-2004.

GMGM was explicit about not having teens on the team. Would rather have them at 20 or extremely close.

Selling hard. Seguin has yet to win me over, but Hall has. There’s a reason those guys went 1-2 and Kuz (at best) was projected as a mid-first. Normally you don’t erase those deltas in a mere 15 months.

I have a hunch Hall is going to go big this year in EDM, his eminently punchable face notwithstanding.

I agree on that. I see Hall as a game-changer with his work-rate and his incredibly dynamic skating and I see him as an elite player sooner rather than later.

We sure won’t know until Kuz gets here. I see them in different roles, frankly, with a little less pressure on Kuz coming into a team with real star power. We can afford to bring him along more slowly. Hall is it in EDM, huge expectations to play a major role to carry the team out of the morass.
We won’t know for certain, but Hall has already set a very high standard of play in the NHL as an eighteen year-old and should improve on that as a nineteen year-old. I find it unlikely that any particular prospect is going to come in and match that ability.

Right, but when Kuz comes in he’ll be 20. Of course, when Hall is 20 he’ll also be much better. I don’t think Kuz is as good as Hall, but I do think Kuz is going to make a bigger immediate impact than most hyped prospects simply because of age.
Obviously, this is all speculation.

One of the funniest parts of the day was Knuble calling out Vogel on the whole “grampa slippers” meme “I just didn’t want to step in someones urine!”.
Will counter with Olie calling Neuvy out for not wearing underwear…forget how that came about but pretty much brought the house down.
Damn, I missed that! :D Both of those panels were going at the same time.
Eliot and Hamerlik(sp) talking about “dancing” was funny also. It seems like the early panels were more about the team and the game on the ice. The later panels were more about the players. I like how that worked.
After the initial reference to “dancing”, many of the subsequent questions would lead to a wise remark about “dancing”.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
Yes, especially when the first use of dancing was really a euphemism for going to a strip club (Mons Venus in Tampa).

I think my favorite panel was the kids press conference with John Carlson and Karl Alzner. They both did very well and told some funny stories. During the panel I was on google chat sending the interesting answers to a friend who wasn’t there so I basically have a transcript. Here it is if you’re interested:
What’s the toughest thing about being in NHL (something like that)?
John says travel is tough. Karl says playing against guys like Ovie is tough.
What cars do they have?
Karl has a SUV, audi sports car, and black black truck, a toyota tundra to fit in Calgary because everyone has a truck there. John has SUV and a car.
Who is their favorite teammate?
John says Karl is his favorite teammate. They gravitated to each other since they were drafted, saw each other in camps, etc. They lived in same building last year and car pooled a lot. Karl said he is good friends with John and Beagle, and Fehr is a good buddy of theirs.
What is their favorite place to play?
John says he has huge family so he likes to play in NYC, New Jersey, or Boston where his family is.
Who do they like to hit?
John likes to hit Crosby (he likes to hit good players so they don’t score). Karl likes to hit Avery.
What are their superstitions?
John not superstitious. Erskine is very superstitious. Karl used to be. Karl had to tap his stick 88 times during national anthem because he was born in 1988. Also had to make the shape of the maple leaf from Canadian flag during anthem with his stick. Played with a tape ball (John claimed Karl tossed it for 15 minutes). Karl got rid of his superstitions.
What was their favorite part of last season?
Karl favorite part of last season was Winter Classic. John favorite part the whole season, because it was his first year.
When did they start to play hockey?
John changed to D at 15 or 16, his coach just told him he was going to play D. John started skating at 4 or 5 years, started playing hockey a couple years later. His dad played hockey and got his brother and him into it, they really liked it. Karl stated playing hockey at 5 yrs. Karl started on D at 7 or 8.
What they do in their free time?
John plays Call of Duty, likes to hang out, relax, watch tv hang out with friendsm play golf. Karl has two dogs, likes taking them to dog park. Karl likes reality tv. John likes Modern Family, Mad Men, 30 Rock.
What is their favorite animal?
John liked monkeys as a kid. Loved to go to the zoo and watch them. He had birthday parties at rain forest cafe every year as a kid and got a new stuffed animal monkey. Karl like killer whales (I think he said dogs too).
What is their biggest fight?
Neither of them really fight. John’s biggest fight was when mojo got jumped last season. Karl never had a fight in NHL, had one fight in junior.
John loves being a Cap, one of the best if not the best place to play is Verizon. Karl agreed.
Who is their worst enemy?
John said his worst enemy is himself, Karl agreed.
John loved 24/7, Karl did as well. John said there was a lot of cameras, so bumping into them was the only thing he disliked. I think Karl said the guy who interviewed Hendricks for the black eye shot said that was the best interview he ever filmed (although I might be remembering this wrong).
Why did they pick their numbers?
Ovie and Nicky got to pick their numbers, most others don’t. John’s favorite number is 11. John just got assigned his number 74 but he is fine with it (4+7=11). Karl is 27 for Scott Neidermeyer. He was 27 in junior, assigned 47 with the Caps, but as something special for him, the staff gave him 27. Green also wanted to be 27, so Karl felt special that he got it.
What is their favorite food?
Karl loves sweets. John loves home cooking and Coldstone ice cream, other sweets.
What is their favorite color?
Karl’s favorite color is blue. John doesn’t have favorite color but mentioned red or green.
What do they do between periods?
Karl takes skates off between period, sometimes some of his gear if he’s hot. John tapes his stick, rests, drinks Gatorade.
Who is the hardest goalie to score on?
They didn’t really answer this (don’t score much). John’s best goal scoring memory is scoring on Brodeur twice, he grew up a fan.
Something about worst injuries last season?
John cracked his fibula at beginning of season by blocking Chara shot. He said he could barely walk or skate. Karl mentioned his back or neck thing (I forget).
John was impressed with the fan that made him birthday cake with his jersey.
What famous person would they like to met?
John wants to meet Denzel Washington, John Q was one on his favorite movies.
John’s funny story: as a kid, every christmas his uncle would give him a puck autographed by a hockey player, usually famous goalies. Finally a couple years ago his uncle told John that the uncle signed the pucks. John almost cried when he found out.

I have a hard time believing that Carlson actually played through a cracked leg bone early in the year.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
I remember him having a leg injury and not playing well but he didn’t miss a game. I think Green was out then for some injury so they needed Carlson. Amazing that he played if he could barely walk or skate according to him. I’m thinking they must have shot him up with some painkillers in his leg before the game.

Believe Carlson was hurt during the playoffs as well.

Yes, he was quite affected by that injury in the playoffs. This tibia crack was early in the season. To put yourself in the way of a Chara shot is a very brave thing to do (also crazy). I wonder how long it takes for something like that to heal?

The schedule had called for Nicky to be at the “kids” panel as well. But he ended up signing autographs during Session 3 which was going on for part of that session.
I wonder if they had juggled the schedule a bit due to Johansson’s illness and had Nicky sign autographs during Session 3 instead of Session 4, as might have been originally planned.
By checking the schedule of who had photo ops, panel discussions; etc. I had figured out that both Nicky and Carlson were supposed to be in Session 4. I had signed up for Session 3 and was in line when someone reported that Nicky would be the player we’d get. I was shocked but pleasantly surprised given what I had “figured” out about the schedule earlier.
But as I went to the Coming to America panel, it had dawned on me that Johansson had not appeared at any autograph session and, given that I had heard he left yesterday’s game earlier due to illness, wondered if it was still the case. Sure enough, it was.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
Panels I attended: The George McPhee Panel; the “I made to the NHL” where Perreault and Wideman appeared; and the “Coming to America” with Sjogren and Hamrlik. There are more I would have liked to have attended except they either were at the same time or conflicted with the Autograph session or photo op I had scheduled.
During the “Coming to America”, Johansson was supposed to appear but the moderator said that he would not appear due to diarrhea. The details of his illness contradict what Bruce said to CI — that MarJo had a cold and was dizzy even without being hit; hence his departure from yesterday’s game and absence from today’s practice. Anyway, regardless of the exact nature of his illness, he’s obviously not well. Get well soon, MarJo.

I think Elliot was joking about the diarrhea. That’s just how he is if you ever listen to him on the radio. He’s not my favorite moderator, although in my opinion he did better this year than last year with Coming to America.
Anything interesting from the Perreault/Wideman panel? I went to the other one with Halpern and Brouwer at the same time. I walked into the convention center from the metro station right behind Perreault and Wideman as they walked down the hallway into the panel and I was like whoa, I’m already seeing players close up, last year I didn’t really run into any players. A lot better luck running into players this time, including seeing a teenage girl go crazy over Mike Green and him letting her run up to him and hug him as he was being escorted somewhere, then her and all her teenage female friends were squealing and freaking out. Quite entertaining. Oh to be 14 again.

I know Elliott did joke that Johansson was missing the panel due to being “freaked out:” but I’m not a regular listener to Elliott.
The Perreault/Wideman panel was pretty interesting. They talked about the differences in lifestyle between the big leagues and AHL, with all the bus rides in the AHL. They were asked what they bought. Both said — cars.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
Interesting point on the lifestyle differences between AHL and NHL. Who on the Caps got to skip the AHL? Ovie, Semin, Nicky, Marcus, anyone else? I think Hamrlik did as well.
by vtcapsfan99 on Sep 24, 2011 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Semin spent some brief stints in the AHL but, for the most part avoided it. Marcus had his brief time there doing rehabilitative starts from an injury. No AHL for Nicky or Ovi — they played in the leagues in their respective countries.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
Marcus had 3 games, Semin had 4. I don’t think that counts since they didn’t live the AHL lifestyle. I didn’t realize Hamrlik didn’t play in the AHL until I heard him talk today about going to Tampa at 18 and playing.

I was surprised how much fun our first caps con was. I spent the whole day in panels, making it down to the main stage only for the 24/7 panel (which was probably my least favorite). I think I could listen to GMGM all day. What a class act. Wideman was hilarious with MP85. The Laich, Ersk, Hendricks panel was very enjoyable. I realized that I’m never going to be able to pronounce Sjogren correctly. We also made it out to the Japers party but had to cut it short when we realized our webcam at home had been knocked over by an escaped pet rabbit. I hope the two drink tickets we gave to an unknown Japers Rink fan were put to good use.
I’m with you — on how to pronounce Sjogren. Will never be able to pronounce it correctly. Looks like you & I attended the same panels, except that I couldn’t make the Laich, Ersk, Hendricks panel. It’s one I wanted to attend but it conflicted with other stuff.
Didn’t make it to the Japers Rink party. Ate dinner with my husband in China Town and then went home. Now I’m tired! (Well, then again, I had a wild weekend last weekend with my class reunion.)

I asked Malin about Sjogren and she said the Sch sound was almost impossible for non-native Swedes to learn and it’s the hardest thing in their language to learn for non-native speakers. To me it sounded like a heavy H sound in there when Mattias said it and I was quite confused. Fortunately he said it’s ok for us to call him Show-grin.

I also went to the Coach’s panel. It had many of the Caps coaches (Dean Evason, Forsythe, Bob Woods, and Nemish. They talked about many things, including some of the players who hated to come out of the game due to injury, like Laich and Boyd Gordon. They were talking about the fact that some people were tough and others soft. When a fan tried to probe the coaches about who was “soft”, the reply was “they’re no longer with the team”

GMGM on Caps PP
I also found it interesting how dumbstruck GMGM was when pressed on when the Caps fail to move the puck after being shown time and again to continue to have movement on the PP. When asked if he was ‘surprised’ (not sure if that was the word) that things remained stagnant and players continued their bad habits his repsonse was: “Yes”.
