Per Corey Masisak:
Johansson provided a glimpse of where his career could be headed in the second half of last season.
True.
He had 10 goals and 20 points in the final 40 games of the season, then followed that up with two goals and six points in nine postseason contests. That’s a 55-point pace based on his postseason production, and the Capitals have only had two centers reach 55 points in the same season once since the mid 1990s.
Not sure I get this.
Thirty points (10G + 20A) in 40 games is a 62-point pace.
Eight points in nine playoff games is a 73-point pace.
38 points in 49 games (second hallf + playoffs) is a 64-point pace.

So based on Masisak’s rationale, Joel Ward is going to contend for the Art Ross this year.
I think Johansson’s second half is more indicative of what we’ll be seeing this year than his playof numbers.
So based on Masisak’s rationale, Joel Ward is going to contend for the Art Ross this year.
That’s one hell of a stretch, don’t ya think?
He establishes a reasonable baseline over a decent sample – 20 points in 40 games. Then he notes an upside over a smaller sample. Then he provides historical context.
In other words, chill.

Where’s the leap? Where does he predict 55 points for MoJo?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’d be surprised if Johansson doubles his points production. That kind of thing is rather rare for a player moving from productive rookie year to second year. Of the dozen top rookie point-getters in the 2009-2010 season, the biggest jump in points last season was +17 (Evander Kane).
If you've read this far...seek help.
I would too. And I don’t see Corey predicting that he will either. That’s all I’m saying.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
It depends a lot on whether what we saw in the 2nd half of the season and playoffs is something he can keep up for a full season. It also depends heavily on who he plays with. If he spends large portions of the season centering Ovie as BB tries to have a 1A and 1B line…his points will get a boost.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

From HP on Vokoun:
With six straight seasons at a save percentage of .919 or better, the evidence overwhelmingly suggests that Tomas Vokoun is a better netminder than either Michal Neuvirth or Semyon Varlamov. Yet despite that, Washington will probably not see much of a reduction in goals against this coming season. There is a good chance that the team will not even be able to maintain the same defensive record that ranked fourth in the NHL with 191 goals allowed last season.
As I said on twitter, Vokoun will benefit from a decrease in shots against which should help the GAA. Age may play a role, but I still think he is in Vezina convo come April.
Book it.

On Vokoun, my husband is a devotee of Strat-o-Matic sports game. Every year the Panthers would do far & away better than expected due to Vokoun’s stats. In his version of the 2007-2008 season, the Panthers actually won his Southeast Division. And

Given his previous handful of seasons (and Florida’s shititude), there’s no reason to think last year was anything more than a blip. Declining skills? Sure. That sharp a decline? Not bloody likely.

I agree with both you and the quote.
I think the article’s exactly right when it points out that there’s just not much room for improvement in goals allowed because the Caps’ team save percentage in the regular season last year was about the same as Vokoun’s. That probably means that Neuvirth/Varlamov/Holtby got lucky because Vokoun’s true talent is better than theirs. But for whatever reason, the Caps already got Vokoun-like goaltending last year. He’s not likely to make a huge difference versus last year in the regular season. (He could definitely make a difference in the playoffs.)
Florida posted a 2.75 GAA on 31.8 shots against per game; the Caps were at 2.33 on 29 shots against per game. There’s plenty of room for Vokoun to keep his sterling save percentage and post a great GAA, but for the Caps to give up both more shots and more goals this year than last year.
The Caps allowed 191 goals last year. If their shots allowed rises only moderately, from 29 to 30, and Vokoun gets 60 games at a .925 save percentage while Neuvirth gets 22 games at a .910 save percentage, then the Caps would give up 194 goals — more than last year.
I could definitely see shots against rising — I’m not convinced that what the team pulled off defensively last year is sustainable, particularly if Boudreau goes back to a more open system. And the margins between NHL goalies are small. If the difference between Vokoun and Neuvirth is the difference between .925 and .910, that actually translates to one extra goal allowed by Neuvirth every 66 shots. That’s more than two games.
So yeah, Vokoun could be in the Vezina conversation due to great personal numbers, and we could still see the Caps give up more goals than they did last year. And as for the article’s main prediction, “Washington will probably not see much of a reduction in goals against this coming season,” I agree with that. Giving up only 191 goals — 4th in the league last year — is really hard. I wouldn’t bet on it being much lower this year.

Of course it would have been even better on CSN if they hadn’t shown Grubauer’s great save on Nash but credited it to Holtby on their 11pm broadcast (and STILL didn’t fix it when they did the overnight show), even though their own “Capitals Insider” had it right in the story he filed ON THEIR OWN WEBSITE at 10:04pm. Insider Article
The ESPN Insider article ranks the important of the ten criteria it identified as important to playoff success (and the Caps ranked first). The criteria are:
Elite: A .500 record or better vs. the top 8 projected teams (8 points)
GF/Gm: Goals for per game of 2.8 or better (4 points)
SF/Gm: Shots for per game of 31 or better (4 points)
GA/Gm: Goals against per game of 2.6 or lower (4 points)
SA/Gm: Shots against per game of 31 or lower (4 points)
GD/Gm: Goal differential per game of 0.2 or better (4 points)
SD/Gm: Shot differential per game of 2.8 or better (4 points)
SV%: Team save percentage of .910 or better (2 point)
PP%: Power-play percentage of 17 or better (1 point)
PK%: Penalty-kill percentage of 81 or better (1 point)
I buy performance against top teams being the strongest indicator but would think special teams play would be higher in the rankings than last given the tight play/more limited PP/PK opportunities in the playoffs, which makes success in those situations more important in my eyes.
Today’s Noon Number actually is somewhat related to this… so please do feel free to continue the conversation there (if not here).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
And yeah, it’s imperfect, obviously. Taken literally, a team that’s going to PK at 75% (0 points), have a 13% PP rate (0 points), .905 team save percentage (0 points) and a shot differential of +2.8 (4 points) is likely to do better than one that PKs at 80.9% (0 points), has a 23% PP (1 point), a .915 team save percentage (2 points), and a shot differential of +2.7 (0 points).
Pretty sure I know who I’d bet on in that series.
I think the reason shot differential seems a bit out of whack here is that we all know that there’s a score effect that goes along with Corsi/SOG rates – teams that trail outshoot teams that lead. And since teams that trail more often are likely to lose more often (how’s that for deep analysis), placing a premium on shot differential here cause some heartburn. One look at the team shot leaders for and against from last year suppresses the heartburn some, and the weight here is no doubt based on the correlation between that metric and winning… but it still feels a bit weird.

Also, CBJ coverage on Giroux after last night… link
In Tuesday’s pre-season home-opener, Pinizzotto had two assists and five hits, including a slobber-knocker on Calgary Flames veteran Curtis Glencross.
Always liked Pinner. The article refers to him as a “policeman” but I’d call him more of an agitator: He was a big-time chirper out on the ice. Good for him on getting nine(!) offers and hopefully it will work out for him in Vancouver.

Lurking more than contributing here, but I am curious about Andrew Carrol. I watched him in rookie camp, and have followed him through training camp. Last night he seemed to be everywhere.
What are his chances with the team this year?

Tried to figure out how to paste a link to the specific post, but not sure how to do it.
It’s close to the bottom.
Anyway, he’s on an AHL contract this season, fighting for playing time with Hershey…off the radar for the Caps at the moment, but he definitely works hard all the time in camp/practice and made an impression in Hershey at the end of last season with his energy.

Camp roster update:
By my count, 43 players (not counting Poti who didn’t clear medical) remaining in camp:
- All are under contract with Washington except 4 Hershey contract players (Rechlicz, Carroll, Brouillette, & Wellar)
- 5 remaining from rookie camp: Sjogren, Eakin, Orlov, Flemming, Grubauer
- 8 Players did not play in one of 2 preseason games: Vokoun and Sabourin: Erskine (no contact), Brouwer (recovering from injury), Richmond, Ford, Aucoin, Potulny
Make that 42 with Whyno reporting Grubauer was sent to Hershey…makes sense to have 4 goalies for 2 practice groups.
Remaining in camp for now
G (4): Vokoun, Neuvirth
plus Holtby and Sabourin
D (14): Alzner, Carlson, Green, Hamrlik, Schultz, Wideman
plus Brouuillette, Collins, Flemming, McNeill, Orlov, Richmond, Wellar, Erskine (no contact), Poti (LTIR)
F (24): Backstrom, Brouwer, Chimera, Halpern, Hendricks, Johansson, Knuble, Laich, Ovechkin, Semin, Ward
plus Aucoin, Beagle, Bourque, Carroll, Eakin, Ford, Hanson, King, MicFlikier, Perreault, Potulny, Rechlicz, Sjogren

Thanks for the list. On D, we know the top 6 and assuming Big John is # 7 and, presumably, Orlov is #8. Who would be next on the call-up list? McNeill? A couple weeks ago, several posters have said Flemming looked good but have not heard lately how he has done. Is he NHL material? I gather we are not too deep in Hershey for call-up replacements on D?
by Wilderthing on Sep 22, 2011 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions
To start this season – My opinion is a righty call-up is between Collins and Orlov and a lefty call-up is McNeill or maybe Richmond.
Caveat being I’ve never been a fan of Richmond’s and he hasn’t played in a preseason game yet. He has played 49 NHL games; most recently in 07-08 when he played 7 games for Chicago.
I’d go with Collins. Thought he played well up here at the end of last season (he basically jumped Tyler Sloan).

It depends on timing of call-up, who the player is replacing, how the respective players are playing in Hershey, etc. I don’t think it’s so simple with Orlov vs Collins, but yes, Collins has definitely helped his cause.
Caps don’t really travel until the end of October (not counting PA trips) when they go out west for two games. Gotta assume if Erskine’s still on the mend (haven’t heard a timeframe yet) they’ll bring an extra Dman along, even if it’s just to pass the Nachos.
"You can want to get to April but when you get to April you may not like the answers you get, so you might as well enjoy the ride while it's going on." - Brian McNally on JRR, 8/29/2011
My roster split above wasn’t to imply they wouldn’t be carrying an extra dman. Just splitting assumed on NHL roster vs all others left in camp and those injured.
I definitely think if they carry an extra dman as a 7th with Erskine out it’s one of Collins, McNeill or maybe Richmond. I don’t see Orlov up unless they expect to play him and only if he has earned the playing time.
Oh, I forgot about Collins. Your scenario seems pretty good. I am embarrassed to admit I have not heard of Richmond. As to Flemming, what is your take? A couple years off? No NHL potential?
My opinion has been the same on Flemming for awhile, undersized dman, with NHL skating ability. He’s confident player/shows poise, but need to see how he does day to day against pro players. He has played 1 pro game – the preseason game the other night in Baltimore on bad ice with Wellar as his partner.
And according to Becca, the Flemming/Weller line were on the ice for both goals by the Preds.
Yeah, needs more seasoning.

So about the Modano one day contract…not a fan of this stuff…fact is he left the Dallas organization and finished his career with Detroit.
As to the CBA, given Dallas is under the cap and hasn’t used all 50 contracts, it’s technically allowed, but I think they should make Dallas deal with 1 less contract slot all season. I wonder if that will be the case. Not the same situation, but with Shanahan and the NJD when his contract was nullified, it came off the books, IIRC.
I thought they had to deal with one less contract all season if they did that. At least, that was my understanding as to why it was not in the cards to sign Olie to a one day deal so he could retire as a Cap.
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Supporting autism awareness and treatment.
As I said, I hope that ends up being the case if he signs and retires. I was under the impression the contract would be there all year, but that has not always been the case since then, like the Shanahan example; my understanding is both the contract and the cap hit went away in his case.
For the Caps, it was a contract and a cap issue with Kolzig, IIRC.
Shouldn’t they be on the hook for the cap hit for him retiring on a contract he was 35+ when he signed?
My guess is they’re not actually filing the contract – he’ll sign it and they’ll throw it in the shredder or whatever. If they file it and the League waives its magic wand, that’s crap.
The hole thing is hokey PR schtick…

Of all the stupid sports-related traditions, this “retire as” stuff has to be among the dumbest. Smacks of an outsized ego that a player would want/demand such pomp and circumstance. Also smacks of despiration for a team to have to celebrate yesterday’s heros to get some PR.
How about the Stars simply put out a nice press release or newspaper add congratulating Modano on a wonderful career and looking forward to when the number 9 will hang from the rafters at [Highest Naming Rights Bidder] Arena. Oh, and Mike it would be great if you could bring your wife to said ceremony.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

Is it really such a big deal? You sign a 1 day contract and officially retire as a member of soandso franchise. After a couple of years no one would remember him as a Wing anyways.

no one was going to remember his Wings year regardless.

Exactly so who cares…they have a little press conference, he gets to come back and talk to the Dallas media one more time, everything is good.

Seriously. Who cares? This gives Dallas a chance to celebrate the guy. Nobody’s hurt. It’s not like they get any kind of competitive advantage.
It’s harmless. I’m firmly against any kind of interpretation of the rules that would harm Dallas or anyone else for this kind of thing. People can disagree on whether it’s gauche or not, but that’s the worst it could possibly be. Gauche. So if you don’t like it, don’t watch it or read the articles about it. The sideshow’ll be over soon enough and we can get back to hockey.

So Whyno thinks this is the group for Chicago tomorrow night:
Alex Ovechkin – Marcus Johansson – Joel Ward
Jason Chimera – Cody Eakin – Brooks Laich
D.J. King – Christian Hanson – Matt Hendricks
Matthew Ford – Keith Aucoin – Ryan Potulny
Karl Alzner – John Carlson
Jeff Schultz – Mike Green
Danny Richmond – Sean Collins
Tomas Vokoun – Dany Sabourin
- – -
If so, it would give Aucoin, Ford, Potulny, and Richmond their first preseason game this year, along with the goalies. Makes sense as it would leave Brouwer (recovering from injury) and Erskine (no contact jersey at practice/recovering from surgery) as the 2 to not play in a game.
Pre-season is a lot of fun because it encourages different line combinations like this. This is two straight games (plus practices) with Marjo-Ovi together. It looks like Bruce is going to give this a serious test. Hendy is also getting a lot of ice time; would like to see him pot 9 or 10 goals and, say, 20-25 points. That would be terrific production if he could do that. He and Halpern should do some pretty cool things this year.
Bruce told reporters that Vokoun will play in Chicago tomorrow.

just a minor mis-match in skill level there.

CI confirmed that lineup. They also mentioned that the “other” practice group; i.e. the one not going to Chicago, a group that included Semin, Backstrom, Brouwer, Neuvirth, Holtby, Hamrlik, and Wideman, did a modified bag skate during today’s practice.

so along with the Winter Classic news becoming ‘official’ soon and the Hershey Adirondack game becoming official soon (for Jan 6), sounds like Pittsburgh will host the next draft…I had heard it was likely to be Anaheim or Pittsburgh.
It’s seemed a very, very strong rumor for a while now. Almost on “worst kept secret” par with the Winter Classic.

Back up on the Chicago line-up a minute. Is it noteworthy that Chimera is getting another game so soon? I was hoping he might have been a little more ‘active’ in the CBJ game, especially since he was given the ‘C.’ But, as far as I can tell, he didn’t do much. I would certainly like to see him score a bit more this year – even with his legendary stone hands. Perhaps if he doesn’t show something in the preseason he might end up on the 4th line?
I could see Chimmer seeing 4th line time this year depending on certain injuries and call ups. What if a 4th liner is injured and we want to take a look at MP? He’s not going to fill a 4th line roll and Chimmer might be the likely candidate to get bumped down.

I would hate to see him down that low. I thought an ideal 3rd line – speed and ability to play shut-down defense – would have been Chimera-Laich-Ward. Wow. However, you might be correct. Injuries aside, I suppose it is possible that Sjogren, Eakin, or MP could simply out play him and push him down. Even that scenario seems unlikely in that I think Halpy-Hendricks-Beagle would be a dynamite 4th line. Clearly, Chimera will make the team but it appears it is not obvious where he will be the best fit. Interesting.
4 Pre-season games is a bit meaningless, but I think it’s a shot across the bow to tell everyone there’s a new sheriff in town.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
I love the format, the explanation, all of it. It’s exactly where the NHL needs to be headed. Bravo, Brendan.

Sure is, and it’s great to see a penalty on a play that (to my knowledge) didn’t result in an injury. Hopefully these hits from behind will be punished all year.

I knew NHLN was showing a game, but not which one. I wasn’t even looking at the screen because I was getting dinner on the table, but I knew in 10 seconds that it was a Pittsburgh game. Steggy & Errey – Blech.
