NHL Depth Chart – Washington Capitals
LW C RW
Alexander Ovechkin Nicklas Backstrom Alexander Semin
Troy Brouwer Brooks Laich Mike Knuble
Jason Chimera Marcus Johansson Joel Ward
I have no doubt these combos will be used at some point during the season (how’s that for going out on a limb?) but I think Knuble is severely hampered on a line with Semin centered by Laich. If Knuble wasn’t going to be with 8-19 most of the time I don’t think they would have re-signed him.
MJ90 is wasted on a line with Chimera and Ward, IMO. At least in year 2.
Chimera-Laich-Ward could emerge as one of the best shutdown lines in the NHL.

Has anyone else actually suggested Laich at 2C? Not here, right?
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
It’s been suggested here, and even argued for here a few times. Most people here are against it though.
My mind is all twisted like a peanut.
I don’t think anyone here wants BL21 as a scoring line center. If memory serves the people (myself included) who want him as 2C want him to log a lot of ice against top lines, like Kesler in 09-10 or Mike Richards.

This is the problem with reading depth charts as line combinations (which I don’t think is Cullen’s intention here… at least I hope not) and doing depth charts that slot each guy at only one position. It’s why when we posted ours, we were sure to explicitly state that they weren’t line combos. I could be wrong, though, but I don’t think Cullen’s a dope. Far from it.

You are correct, but then it should prob be formatted a different way. I get that Semin is the best RW, but I don’t think he is the RW1, which is Knuble.
Confusing for sure.

Agreed. Although he did take MSL in the first round at #10 last night of our ESPN mock fantasy draft.

With Ovechkin (seemingly) taken off the point on the power play, I may have to re-think the idea that Boudreau can’t make adjustments. It just takes him over a year of having problems to finally come up with a change or solution. Which … still makes me think he’s not a good enough coach to take a team to the Stanley Cup.

I think he showed he can and will make adjustments, the bigger question is the response time and whether he can make the adjustments quickly enough to respond in a 7 game series. For me, that’s all that matters. Given how long the D adjustments and this PP adjustment took, I’m happy they were made but I’m still skeptical.
Obviously, this is all speculation.

I hardly think Boudreau has an excuse this year. It’s interesting to me that McPhee seemingly had to step in and implement a more hard-ass culture in the off-season all on his own. I’m sure he figures that Boudreau is still learning how to be an NHL coach, to some degree and has given him a lot of leeway for that reason.
I don’t think BB has an excuse either, and I hope I didn’t imply that. My stance on BB is pretty well on record at this point…
I’m just trying to give him credit when he does adjust. If he really takes AO off the point, that deserves credit. I’m still concerned that it took over one full season before he made that adjustment.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
McPhee seemingly had to step in and implement a more hard-ass culture in the off-season all on his own
Hmm… please expand as to how this is all GMGM and BB shares no part in it.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Albeit with limited information about what goes on behind closed doors, I’m referring to the conditioning stuff. The personal visits McPhee has been making to the young guns, the public statements about being in better shape, and based on his quotes it seems like he was the driver behind the recent conditioning test.
or it’s nothing more than BB and GMGM playing good cop-bad cop
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Supporting autism awareness and treatment.
I doubt much happens without both of them being of the same opinion.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I don’t really know how their relationship works other than the two minutes they were talking in GMGM’s office on 24/7. Is it a real partnership or is it more of a boss-employee dynamic? Given Boudreau’s reputation as a “player’s coach”
I could also see McPhee having sat BB down after the season to discuss the need to instill more discipline when it comes to training, in-season habits and the like.
Again, just theorizing.
Strange...
One strange thing… I don’t by any means think Vogel is an idiot. During his sit-down with BB, he said that Bruce was “exceptional at making adjustments on the fly… one of the best (he’d)ever seen, in fact.” They were talking about line changes, predominantly, and having a feel for what combos will work at what time. Seems a bit incongruous coming from someone who’s opinion I respect. I could see him blowing smoke up Bruce’s ass with the “exceptional…” comment, but when he embellished it with “…best I’ve ever seen”, it made me think he meant it.
I’m actually in the Bruce Boudreau camp. I think he’s a fine coach who, along with his players, is learning what it takes to win at the highest level (playoffs), and I think he, like his team, will get there.
I don't know, maybe it was the roses...
That’s mostly my point. What good is a coach who can adjust, but can’t do it quick enough to adapt in the playoffs.
I have planned my grand attacks; I will stand behind their backs. With my brand new battle-axe, they will taste my wrath. They will hear me say as the pavement whirls, "I hate California girls."

Tonight in Baltimore we might get the first look at the Capitals’ power play this year, which in drills Monday featured one very noticeable change – Alex Ovechkin playing on the half board rather than his usual spot on the point.
Words can’t even describe how happy this makes me. I’m just praying that this lasts.

From yesterday’s scrimmage (TEB piece):
Jeff Schultz and Dennis Wideman looked like a D-pair that’s logged some big minutes in the NHL together before. Oh wait, they have. So it should come as no surprise they were the best blueliners on the ice.
These two are the presumed 3rd pair, right? Good to know the chemistry’s there, and that Wideman’s back in form.

Which raises the question, what is the over/under for # of games in which 52, 44, 55, 27, 74, and 6 play together.
I’ll be optimistic and go 55.
Second question, how many games with the Caps have a defensemen who is not 52, 44, 55, 27, 74, 6 or 4?
I’ll also be optimistic here and say 10.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

Hard to say on the first one.
On the second let’s look at it this way. The team’s top-seven entering the season last year were 3, 4, 27, 52, 55, 74 and 89, right? They ended up getting 80 games from D’s outside that group last year. Now, you wouldn’t expect a Poti-level injury, so and there isn’t as pressing a need to go out and get a Hannan… but I still put the number in the 20-30 range pretty comfortably.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I know one year is not a trend, but let’s take a look at last year —
- Alzner, Schultz, Erskine and Carlson played 72 or more last year.
- Hannan played in 55 games, having been acquired after game 25. That’s 55 of 57.
- Poti and Sloan played a combined 54. Fahey played 7 and Collins played in 4.
- Wideman played in 14 of 20 after he was acquired, and 61 of 62 for the Panthers before he was traded.
- Hamrlik played in 79 of the Candiens 82 games.
- Green, obviously was a problem, playing only 49 games.
If we are allowed to modify who is in the top 6 is over time (which I think is cheating, but works in my favor), then our Alzner, Schultz, Carlson, Wideman and Hannan missed no more than 10 games each. Erskine missed only 9.
I think 55 out of those top 6 is doable. 10 games of 7D and above is probably too optimistic.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

Right, but there’s overlap.
Erskine’s not ready to go right now. Hamrlik’s a little tight in the groin. They could be on their 8th D in the first week of the season and get 10 games from 8-and-below in October. I don’t think that’s likely, but I can’t imagine there were too many teams in the League that got away with fewer than 10 games played by #8 and below last year.

Well, yeah. The top-six could play 82 games each.
But if it’s not Poti/Green (like it was last year), maybe it’s Hamrlik/Schultz this year. Or someone else. Or maybe Schultz regresses even further or for to add depth they go get someone at the deadline. I just think they’d be extraordinarily lucky to only call on someone outside the top-seven ten times this year.

Yep. But “looked like a D-pair that’s logged some big minutes in the NHL together before. Oh wait, they have” is a bit much – they’ve played a total of 128:17 regular season 5v5 minutes together. They were slightly out-Corsi’d together too, fwiw, especially when games were close. Small samples, though, which circles back to my original point.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
And just to beat a dead horse here, Wideman and Schultz both averaged between 17:15 and 17:29 of ES ice time per game last season. So they’ve skated the equivalent of just over seven games together.

#Caps 9/21 cuts: Bouchard, de Kastrozza, Galiev, Greentree, Kane, Lacroix, Mink, Mitchell, Paquette, Baier, Miskovic, Oreskovic, Stevenson.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Galiev, as good as he is, really didn’t have a chance at cracking the team yet.
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
I was hoping he’d stick around a bit longer, though.

He’s going to Hershey.. best he get used to his teammates that he’ll be playing with most of the year as soon as possible.

Rest of them are getting a nice break to get their stuff together before Hershey’s camp starts next Monday.

Actually, I think they report on Sunday.
And yes, it is typical that they send some guys down to get settled, plus some vets to provide some leadership. Some years, the Caps have actually brought a player or two back up to Washington later to play in a preseason game (Incl. Kane, IIRC) although with the competition in camp this year, seems doubtful they’d do that.
Man, had to read that twice; thought I’d read Boudreau starting that list.

So with today’s cuts and expected line-up in Columbus tonight, here’s some info:
By my count, 44 players (not counting Poti who didn’t clear medical) remaining in camp:
- All are under contract with Washington, except 4 Hershey contract players (Rechlicz, Carrol, Brouillette, & Wellar)
- 6 remaining from rookie camp: Sjogren, Eakin, Orlov, Flemming, Anderson, Grubauer
- 2 expected to play in the first 2 preseason games are Beagle and Bourque.
- 6 Players not expected to play tonight who won’t have dressed for a game plus 2 goalies (Vokoun and Sabourin): Erskine (no contact), Brouwer (recovering from injury), Richmond, Ford, Aucoin, Potulny
"Hopefully I’m going to have the chance, which I didn’t have the last few years, which is to sit in that crease and some games and the score is 4-1 or 5-1," Vokoun said. "I don’t have to worry every minute of every game. If it’s 1-1 or 2-1 and every mistake you make people tell you, ‘Oh, you give up bad goal then we lost.’ It’s kind of hard when every game is like that. Once in awhile you’re going to give up a bad goal."
Does anyone else find this a little troubling? Makes it sound like Vokoun is thinking that being a Cap is going to somehow be less stressful, or that he can make more mistakes and still win.
by DrinkingPartner on Sep 21, 2011 10:37 AM EDT reply actions
I thought it was interesting given the results of my review of how many points the soft goals cost FLA. I think he may be right that he was frequently blamed for costing points in close game.s
Obviously, this is all speculation.
It makes him sound unfocused to me, which surprises me. I’m hoping this isn’t why he didn’t go in the first day of FA.

You’re reading too much into it. Vokoun’s a professional – he’ll be fine.

Probably, but that seems like an odd standpoint.
by DrinkingPartner on Sep 21, 2011 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions
Not sure how you see that as unfocused. To me, it’s a very good goalie saying “I finally don’t have to be perfect for my team to win”. More to the point, maybe he’s really saying “I’m finally playing with guys whose talent level matches my own.”
And I say give TV29 some time and space. The press corps was tiny and indifferent at best in Florida. He gave long and thoughtful answers to to questions he received yesterday, and he is still grieving the loss of his friends (at the funeral he went to back home he was a pallbearer.)
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
I don’t find it troubling as much as find it realistic. The Caps were a much better team than Florida last year, and Vokoun was stealing points for them…
Winnipeg? Winnipeg??? Oy! (And now it's official...)

He’s just telling it like it is. I played goalie for my High Schools Soccer team as a Freshmen the first year we opened. Most games were extremely lopsided losses. It wears on you physically and mentally to be on a team that is constantly outperformed, and I think Vokoun is excited to finally have some support. And in return for that added support, we get a guy who is capable of winning games by himself.

I don’t find it troubling at all. It sounds like he’s feeling less pressure to have to be perfect all the time which in turn should result in a better performance. I know that having to be perfect in order to have a chance will just wear you down and can actually be detrimental to your performance.
by Beakers Lab on Sep 21, 2011 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions
In every scenario he mentions, Vokoun has only allowed one goal per game. I don’t find a goalie who believes he will be working with a 1.00 GAA most games too troubling.

I disagree. Beagle is a better hockey player than Laing at both the AHL and NHL level from what I have seen watching both of them during their careers.
I agree with this – Jay Beagle looks like he can play a role in the NHL and not sink the team every time he’s on the ice. Q never displayed that ability. Tried his ass off? Epitome of guts? The very portrait of a team player? Absolutely. But Jay Beagle is just better, not only luckier.

The Semin article by NGreenberg
I tend to agree with the article. I think one of the main points with Semin is that when he seems to be mentally in the game, he is one of the best all-around wingers in the game, solid defensively and occasionally jaw-dropping offensively, but at times he seems to lose focus, and the biggest knock is his propensity during those times to take silly penalties. I’d like to see a penalties taken/penalties drawn on Semin. Does he truly put his team at a disadvantage that often, or does his elusiveness and skill offensively create as many penalties as he takes?
I don't know, maybe it was the roses...
Last season at even strength he took 1.5 penalties per 60 minutes of ice time while drawing 1 penalty per 60 minutes.
