Rosters for Caps scrimmage
White Team:
Keith Aucoin - Ryan Potulny – Troy Brouwer
Jason Chimera - Mattias Sjogren - Jacob Micflikier
Joel Rechlicz - Maxime Lacroix - David De Kastrozza
Taylor Stefishen - Andrew Carrol - Boyd Kane
Julien Brouillette - Dmitry Orlov
Tyler Ludwig - Paul Baier
Red team:
Matt Hendricks - Jeff Halpern - Matthew Ford
Francois Bouchard - Mathieu Perreault - Joel Ward
Graham Mink - Christian Hanson - Samuel Henley
Garrett Ross - Luke Locckhart - Danick Paquette
Danny Richmond - Zach Miskovic
Dustin Stevenson – Phil Oreskovic
The first period was dominated by the red team and they scored early and often with the first goal going to Ross, I think it was at the far end so couldn’t tell 100% but his line was out and it was one of the forwards. Just a few minutes late Oreskovic scored on a point shot over the glove of Grubauer. Holtby kept the score 2-0 after stopping a breakaway from Rechlicz. Soon after the Red team extended their lead as this time I am sure Ross was the one who scored and the period ended 3-0 Red.
The second period was a different story as Ryan Potulny would come down the left side and snipe a shot past the glove of Holtby to get the white team on the board and that got the momentum to swing from red to white. Holtby had to make a great save on Chimera on a feed from behind the net from Micflikier. At that point to goalie changed with Holtby having given up just 1 goal and Grubauer letting 3 by him. It didn’t take long for Sabourin to get beat as Chimera beat him on a wristed from the right circle to make it a 3-2 game. Late in the period as Bouchard was going to the box there was a fight between Stefishen and Richmond with both getting a few good shots in and no clear winner. The Red team was able to kill off the penalty with several strong efforts by Hanson and the period ended 3-2 Red.
Potulny would tie the game on a great feed in front from behind the net by Ludwig. That goal opened the flood gates and Sabourin couldn’t make any great saves and he was left out to try with White getting a second chance on the power play early in the 3rd Potulny would finish his hat trick and take the lead with the power play goal. Soon after it became the Jacob Micflikier show as he would put in the final two goals including a great cross crease move that was finished with a great shot to end the game at 6-3 White. Vokoun was not challenged much with his biggest threat coming with his team on the power play where he had to be Christian Hanson to a dump in and make a pass to get the team out of the zone.
Two guys really stuck out in the game today in a good way. One was Ryan Potulny. Hard to ignore a hat trick no matter what kind of game it was. If we lose one of our top 6 this year this is a guy I can see coming up and filling in quite well. However with us only having bottom line spots open I think he will start the season in the AHL. The other guy was Christian Hanson. He was physical but was never pulling himself out of position to make the hit. If it wasn’t for the fact that from listening to the Caps brass talk it seems that Sjogren has been given the 3rd line center spot I would think he has played his way into that slot. If not he could still be a good 4th line winger who can also play center when needed.
Mattias Sjogren once again just did not impress me. He didn’t look bad or out of place as it were but he also didn’t stand out among a group that was mainly AHL or junior players. The team and Bruce seem to really like him but to be honest I think Hanson and even Eakin are better options.
Dmitry Orlov today still had a few good moves but today showed why we got Hamrlik. Against the younger rookies he was a super star but he still needs some seasoning with playing against AHL and lower NHL level players. As with Sjogren he didn’t look bad he just also didn’t stand out like he did in the rookie game with is expected.
Yes that is Jeff Schultz using his body it is possible
The guy who played more games in a Caps jersey then anyone Calle Johansson
