GMGM phone call with NHLNetwork was pretty interesting. I love his support towards Semin and justified it with stats. Well done.

Through 42 playoff games, Pavel Datsyuk had 3 goals and 12 assists. But the Wings had won a Cup (hist first year, when he wasn’t a terribly integral part of the team) and another playoff series. Still, plenty of people questioned Datsyuk as a playoff performer. Needless to say, they don’t any more.
There’s still time to re-write the narrative…
I thought GMGM’s comments on Poti, btw, should more or less extinguish any thoughts anyone had of him making it back (for the Caps, at the very least).

For those of us that don’t really have time to listen to the audio, what were his comments on Poti?
I have planned my grand attacks; I will stand behind their backs. With my brand new battle-axe, they will taste my wrath. They will hear me say as the pavement whirls, "I hate California girls."

I can’t get at it now, but he essentialy used the past tense to describe Poti’s service to the team in a way that seemed to imply that he’s done. Not that it’s all that surprising, but, insofar as I can tell, it was the most stark comment he’s made to that effect. I don’t think I’m reading more into it than I should, but that’s also a possibility.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
If GMGM doesn’t think Poti is coming back, why is he electing to go the LTIR route with him instead of trying to assign him to Hershey? Having banked cap space (or not) could make or break the season.
I guess I’m late to the party but this goes back to the point Gould Old Days was making yesterday. Is he not capable of playing at all? Or is he just not able to play at the same level as before?
Meh, that’s not a huge issue. The decision was made before he “failed.” He just as easily could have “passed” and been immediately assigned. He “failed” because they had no intention of assigning him and were comfortable with an immediate LTIR.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
That’s an awful lot of conjecture, no?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
How so? Obviously anything about behind the scenes is conjecture since none of us were there, but given how other players have been treated and what we generally know about the NHL culture, I think the logic follows.
I’m just saying that I can envision a situation in which Poti was “cleared,” but that situation only comes up if the Caps and Poti had already agreed on a plan to clear his salary after the test. I don’t think he’s an obvious “fail” on the physical; I’m sure he could get on the ice and take a few twirls and be “cleared.”
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Because you’re implying that doctors, in conducting the team physical, lied about his condition to play. That would be grounds for losing their license and I seriously doubt any team doctor would risk a career-destroying decision like that simply to please the team in putting a player on LTIR instead of the AHL.
Given the fact that Poti’s career appears to be in jeopardy (something we have not seen with other players who have gone to LTIR long-term), I find the implication baseless.
Besides, my guess is that the Capitals would be more comfortable with his cap hit in Hershey than him sitting on LTIR. At least he’d be taking the Souray mentoring role and Leonsis would get something for the money he’s handing out to him.
That’s a misunderstanding of how the medical profession and NHL medical assessment works. For one, medical diagnosis is not nearly as objective as you imply. Two different, and honest, doctors can reach differing conclusions.
Second, it implies the NHL, or anyone, oversees the evaluations. They don’t. Teams are free to use whatever doctors and make whatever diagnoses and conclusions that they want. Unless a player cries bloody murder, the NHL simply will not get involved. (See Rathje, Mike; Hatcher, Derian).
Obviously, this is all speculation.
LTIR requires a doctor’s certification that the player cannot play. What you are implying is that a doctor would willfully make a misdiagnosis because a team asked him to for their benefit.
Sorry, I know too many doctors to think they would be that stupid to risk the liability, fraud accusations, and possible loss of career and reputation.
And as I said, this entire implication is completely baseless considering Poti’s status, which has not occurred with other long-term LTIR cases with the Capitals, including Pothier. Your assumption requires that Poti is actually healthy enough to play. With the general manager actually being public with the fact that Poti’s career may be in jeopardy, don’t you find it even remotely surprising that there hasn’t been a direct rebuttal from Poti or his agent? There’s absolutely no logic to your conjecture.
I think you are misunderstanding his argument. For example this:
Your assumption requires that Poti is actually healthy enough to play.
is the exact opposite of what he is saying. He is saying that the doctors clear him as being ready to play so that they can send him to the minors. Then once in the minors he practices and what do you know, he gets “re-injured”.
Release the Mackan!

And I bet Tom Poti is healthy enough to go dominate the Kettler Men’s League. He just can’t push himself to NHL level, which goes back to Gouldie’s point about whether his new peak is sub-NHL level.
And he still assumes that there is “one true diagnosis” and not a range of potential diagnoses. And he still assumes there is any remote chance of being caught, and charged with fraud, absent the player crying bloody murder (which is an explicit stipulation in my entire argument).
But hey, ripping off J.P.’s lines never goes wrong, so he should stick with that.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Sorry – ran out to grab lunch. Forsch is pretty much going down the road I was headed, though. It seems that you’re implying that it’s the team and not a doctor who made the decision as to how the results of his physical would be interpreted. Perhaps I’m naive, but I didn’t think that’s how it was done.
Moreover, if that’s how it’s done, why wouldn’t the team have him cleared so they could rid themselves of him and start banking cap space?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I think what F&B is saying is that he suspects Poti wasn’t cool with being stashed in Hershey.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
Who gives a toss what he’s cool with? He should’ve negotiated an NMC in his contract if he wanted that control.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Because if the team pushes him to be cleared, and stashes him in the minors then a pissed Poti can raise a big stink, say he was demoted while injured and put the Caps in a big cap circumvention shit storm.
Release the Mackan!

But he’s saying that the team pushed for the “not cleared.”
If I’m not mistaken, the point that’s implied and getting lost is that Poti and the team, in conjunction (the key point), decided how they’d handle the situation and the physical was a formality based on that decision. Essentially:
GM: Tom, we want to clear you and cut you.
TP: But I’m not good to go.
GM: C’mon. Please?
TP: No.
GM: It’ll help the team…
TP: No.
GM: Alright. You fail your physical and go on LTIR.
TP: Giddy up.

I can imagine that conversation. I don’t know that it happened or didn’t happen. I’m just saying that the way NHL players handle their grievances (almost always under the table and out of public view) makes it possible that the Caps could have negotiated a situation with Poti and the medical analysis would be impacted by that. Either way, Poti isn’t going to be an active member of the Caps roster, so they may have/could have had a discussion about whether he’d accept assignment, whether he’d prefer to be on LTIR, etc.
I’m not saying the team pushed for “not cleared,” necessarily. They probably wanted him to be cleared, but they weren’t going to clear him without some sort of benefit: either he’s actually good enough to play (which may not even be a benefit, given the cap situation), or they could assign him.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Where I’m getting stuck is that if they thought he was legitimately fit enough to be cleared, even if Poti himself didn’t think so, why not push for a doctor’s confirmation one way or the other? And if it’s legit and Poti’s doctors disagree, it gets handled however it gets handled.
they weren’t going to clear him without some sort of benefit: either he’s actually good enough to play (which may not even be a benefit, given the cap situation), or they could assign him.
As it stands now, the team’s in pretty much the worst possible scenario. Where’s their benefit? Are they that scared of clearing him, cutting him, and having him throw a shitfit that would be dealt with “under the table and out of public view”?
My point being Poti has to be legitimately unable to perform right now. And since he is, there’s really only one option – LTIR.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I wouldn’t risk clearing him and assigning him without the player being on board. Even the threat of a public squabble would keep me from trying to strong-arm a guy. So I assume any conversation about whether he’d accept assignment would have already taken place, and if he said “no” then you basically have to LTIR him. I wouldn’t say “oh yeah, what can you do about it?” That’s the way you make what would be an under the table discussion become a public matter, and draw cap-circumvention attention from the NHL and NHLPA.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Where’s the strong-arming? If a doctor legitimately (i.e. independently) clears him, the team is justified in making the subsequent roster move, no?
I just don’t see why Poti should have any say in whether or not he’d accept the assignment, assuming the legit physical evaluation. Who fucking cares? Did Wade Redden? If Poti wanted a say in it, he should’ve negotiated a NMC, no?
And I don’t think any stink ever happens. The PA is weaker than Tomas Fleischmann along the boards in an exhibition game, and the League is full of wink-wink nudge-nudge good ol’ boys who look the other way and expect the same in return.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I just think “legitimate” and “independent” doesn’t mean “not debatable.” Medical diagnoses just aren’t as objective as a lot of people seem to believe they are. I could see the Caps “independently and legitimately” clearing him, but still facing a ton of opposition when they try to assign a player.
For instance, I’m hearing that players frequently file grievances because they don’t want to be sent to the AHL. They don’t complain when they are taken out of the lineup, but when the team tries to demote the player then you have an issue.
I think the medical history around Poti’s groin makes it distinguishable from the Redden incident.
And, yeah, Poti should have negotiated a NMC, seeing as he was already leaving money on the table.
You may be right about the PA, but maybe Gary Boy tries to make a statement about circumvention (or maybe not, given the new CBA is coming up and they can just handle it then).
Obviously, this is all speculation.
I could see the Caps "independently and legitimately" clearing him, but still facing a ton of opposition when they try to assign a player.
Sure. That’s possible. And I don’t disagree that it’s not black and white. All I’m saying is that if the Caps have a good faith belief that he’s “clear,” any controversy doesn’t reflect badly on them. My belief is that the Caps couldn’t, in good faith, believe that he’s clearable right now, and so he wasn’t.
And Gary’s going to get on one of his bosses about cap circumvention? That’s rich…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
It comes down to this for me: Sending Poti to Hershey sends the clear signal that you think he ain’t going to get any better (or at least, not this year). Putting him on LTIR sends the signal that this is a useful player with an injury that is going to get better.
I think there are good reasons in favor of either approach. But I can also see putting him on LTIR for now, and putting this decision off a bit. Because once you send him through waivers, that’s essentially irreversible. The team’s not going to risk putting him through reentry waivers. LTIR is the conservative approach.
And I do think the team has a fair amount of control over this. The doctor can analyze Poti and tell the team what state he’s in, but at the grey areas the question of whether that physical state is acceptable for playing hockey is a hockey decision, not a medical decision. If someone has post-concussion syndrome, then nobody ought to be letting him on the ice. But what about a broken thumb? Or a sore knee that needs icing? Players play through injuries all the time.
As F&B says, it doesn’t seem as though it’s literally true that Poti cannot play hockey. It’s just that he’s not physically at a point where he can help an NHL team. If it’s going to be a permanent condition, and he’s at the point where trying isn’t going to do him any more harm, then yes, a doctor might “clear him to play” so he can try to continue his hockey career at whatever level is appropriate for his diminished skills.
Which brings me back to the first point — as a team, when do you say “that’s it, there isn’t going to be any more improvement, and Tom, your NHL career seems to be over.” The decision to put Poti on LTIR suggests that the team isn’t ready to take that step yet. The quotes from McPhee suggest that they aren’t too far away.

I had been thinking about the whole Bradley/Semin thing and figure it’s obvious their brains are wired differently. I’ve been reading about Brain Types. Semin is an introvert, i.e. a Back Brain. Bradley is an extrovert, a front brain. Plus, Semin is probably an “inanimate”; i.,e. a thinker as opposed to a feeling. I would guess Bradley to be more of an “animate” or feeler. An introverted thinker would probably come across as caring less than an extroverted feeler, with the latter wondering about the former.

The 2011-12 Caps: coming soon (though not soon enough) to a TV near you.
Considering that CSN has spent months pushing it’s own outreach to Charm City (CSNBaltimore), and that Comcast is now heavily invested in the NHL and it’s success, you’d think they would send a crew up there to broadcast tonight’s game.
But instead they’re showing a replay of a college football game in which the “local” school (UVA) lost. Yeah, that should get some ratings.

I caught the last 40 minutes of Hockey Diaries on XM last night driving home. If you haven’t listened, I highly recommend it. For me, the program started in about mid-November.
I thought Hendricks gave the best performance. He talked about why and when he fights. He talked about telling his dad about the two-year contract. Apparently, when he hadn’t told his dad about the negotiations and, when he called his dad to tell him he signed, his dad said, “I’m busy. Can I call you back.”
The best part was an interview with Matt Hendricks’ wife during game four of the Rangers’ series. She was talking during the game and precisely during the point when Chimera scored. You could hear all the cheering in the background. She said the texts went from “What the Fuck” to “Wahoo” instantaneously.

It was great and so well done. There’s a great story about Hendy on the bus after the March Tampa game. I won’t give it away, but what makes it even more great is the way they intertwine three (or four?) different people’s version of the story at the same time. Such fantastic editing by Chris and Gemma.

The Caps’ dynamic defensive duo of Karl Alzner and John Carlson effectively shut down Stamkos and partner in crime Martin St. Louis (tied for fourth in the league’s scoring race at night’s outset) on the night. Stamkos finished at minus-2 with just one shot on goal in 20:48 of ice time and was charged with three giveaways, more than anyone on either side. St. Louis managed two shots and was minus-1 one in his 20:16 of work.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Alzner played more than 42 ES minutes (and 39+ ES minutes against St. Loo) last year and the Bolts scored… not once.

I dig this quote Vogs posted from Knuble:
“I have played in Baltimore, against the Baltimore Bandits when I was with the Adirondack Red Wings,” recalls Knuble. “I played a couple of games there; one or two. I remember it needed work then. We got dressed in like a carriage house. It was the stables, it had hay all around and the tack they need for the horses. It was the spring of 1896 when I played there last.”

Thinking about GameCenter Live
I’m considering splurging on GCL this year. For those of you who have it, what do you think?
I live in D.C. so Caps games are obviously blacked out, but I’ve got CSN/Versus, so I’d be using GCL to watch random other games.
I’m also going to be living with my parents in San Diego for a month, so there’s a month’s worth of Caps games to catch from California. Once I leave the East Coast and my computer is outside the D.C. market, will GCL let me watch Caps games? Or does it permanently register wherever I signed up for it?
a capital wasteland - art & hockey from washington, d.c.
I really like GCL, and I’m going to have it instead of Center Ice for a couple of reasons.
1) The resolution is better than SD TV; GCL actually gets most (if not all) the games in high-enough definition that it’s an improvement over Center Ice;
2) The games (even the blacked-out games) are archived and available 48 hours after they occur, which obviates the need to waste DVR space on a game unless I immediately plan to watch it;
3) GCL is available on a wide variety of devices such as the Roku, which makes it almost as convenient as Center Ice.
Tortorella: Can I get another question? I went in here in a pretty good mood today, too.
Larry Brooks: So did I.
Tortorella: Well, you obviously f***ed that up, didn't you?
Ah, thanks for the input. And do you perchance know the answer to my last question? If I sign up for GCL in D.C. but then take my laptop to the West Coast, can I watch Caps games on it while I’m there?

Additional questions
I’m sick of the SD and inconstant coverage from Center Ice (side note: Firefox really wants that to be Centre). So, I was considering GCL for this year.
CI usually does a free preview to start the season, does anyone know if GCL does the same? I want to see how it looks on my TV before I commit to the money. (Aww, who am I kidding I’ll get it anyway, but I’m still curious.) Anyone watch GCL on their TV or do you typically use your laptop? I can get a roku, but I would prefer to run an HDMI cable from my desktop to the TV if the quality is acceptable.
↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → b a (select) start
I don’t know if there’ll be a free trial, but last season on the NHL website you could click “watch now” and it would let you stream GCL for about 5-10 minutes for free before asking you to pony up. It would only let you do it a couple times a day, but I definitely spent a while where every day I’d catch 5-10 minutes of a few games on GCL!

I have had GCL for almost a year and love it except the fact that if the game is on locally, either on cable or broadcast, the game is blocked out. I watch it on a 19 inch monitor and think the quality is good. Of course, the classic games don’t look quite as good, but that is to be expected.
Enjoy!

hockeystreams.com
much cheaper (12 months for $100), allows instant playback (so you don’t have to wait until the game’s over), and quality feeds
Sorry I’m a few hours behind here, but I’ve been a GCL subscriber for a few years now…
First of all, if you have a decent Internet connection, the stream is great. I have a small media center PC hooked up to my TV via HDMI, and when I stream the games they are in near-HD quality. Definitely better than the SD-only feeds my cable provider has for their NHL package. Granted, if your home Internet isn’t very fast, you may not get as quality a feed, naturally.
For many games, you are also able to pick which feed you want to watch, which is nice if there are particular team’s broadcasters that you don’t really care for.
I have traveled a few times, and the whole “will my home team still be blacked out if I’m at home?” question is a bit hit or miss. Usually, as long as I’m “far away” from DC, the Caps games are available, but there have been a few times I’ve been in western MD and WV (Pen’s local market) and the game was still blacked out…but other times I’ve been in that exact same location and been able to get the games just fine. Strange. May just depend on what ISP I’m connected to? I’d be willing to bet San Diego would not be a problem.

Interesting...
Funny that NHL.com has Nashville beating the Florida 5-3 last night, and Florida beating Nashville 4-3.

Speaking of GCL and now scores, I noticed the score isn’t always accurate in GCL. Even the lovely Winter Classic is listed incorrectly. Funny that.

OK, we’ve been at this for almost a half hour, which means the Toronto Maple Leafs platinum season ticket holders have finally started arriving. If anyone wants to pelt them with empty water bottles, be my guest. No batteries, Flyers fans! Leave that to the Canucks fans… we’ll just blame the NHL for anything they do.
Great lines.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
The NHL made some unexpected headlines over the weekend, thanks to a bizarre story out of Detroit. After years of fans celebrating postseason Red Wing goals by tossing an octopus onto the ice, the league has apparently pushed for a crackdown that will see fans fined and ejected for participating in the tradition.
The news was met with instant and near-unanimous scorn by hockey fans, as the move apparently makes the NHL one of the few businesses in the world that discourages customers from hurling animal carcasses at its employees.
I don’t know if he’ll ever top that line as far as I am concerned.

the Caps sold the game to Baltimore on having their “name” guys show up. So a certain number of spots are taken up by the Ovies and Knubles. Caps also want to get some of the young’uns like Galiev a game or two in before they have to send him back to St. John’s.

Good question. I don’t think he makes the team out of camp, because the top 12 spots are full:
Fisher, Legwand, Erat, Hornqvist, Kostitsyn, C. Wilson, O’Reilly, Tootoo, Bergfors, Smithson, Geoffrion, and Spaling.
After that Craig Smith and Matt Halischuk will probably alternate between the 13th forward and emergency call-up, so Kyle will either end up an injury replacement or leading the line, as it were, in Milwaukee, I’d guess.

Of all the articles today, the one that blew me away was the one on Chimera and his god-awful shooting percentage. As much as I love the guy (one of my favorite CAPS), how can a seasoned professional be such a bad shooter….especially one who has so many good opportunities? Are there any ex-coaches out there who can explain why he can’t learn to shoot better? I had the same question when reading about Brooks’ off season conditioning program. All they talked about was how hard he skated and what good shape he is in. His problem (after last year’s serious tail-off in points), however, as with Chimera seems to be scoring/shooting. Can’t that be taught? And shouldn’t those guys be working on it?
Speaking of Chimera – I believe Hendricks makes a comment in Hockey Diaries about how Chimera thinks he (Chimera) has good hands.
I laughed out loud.

You can teach it to an extent, but everyone’s ability has limits. Picking corners when you have pucks lined up on the hash marks is easy. Picking a corner on a cross-ice one timer with a speedy NHL defenseman pressuring you is a skill not every guy, even at the NHL level can achieve.

Make what you will of it, from TEB at CI:
On a personal note, a lot of folks have been asking why I’ve been writing about the Caps so much the past month or so. Well, my role at The Post has changed a little bit. I’m still the Hoyas beat writer (I’m not giving up that trip to Maui for anything), but I will be doing a LOT more Caps this season. Katie is the beat writer and will provide daily coverage of the team; I’ll blog/write as frequently as my schedule allows and hope to weigh in once a week with an On Hockey column.
So, Caps > NASCAR/MMA?
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
I still can’t believe CSN isn’t broadcasting the game tonight.
While it is “just a preseason game”, it is also an event the Caps have been promoting for months, and I would think would want to create as much buzz as possible about. Add to the fact that the Caps ratings have been nothing but awesome for the past few seasons, there is no basketball, and CSN has no MLB team to broadcast, and it just seems like a no-brainer to me. I know I’d be watching tonight if it were on!
I hate hearing excuses about poor ratings for exhibition games, when that same network just broadcast all 4 redskins pre-season games (and yes, I do realize that NFL, even preseason NFL, is a big ratings draw — I just think the Caps would get watched as well right now, at least locally), and don’t even try to see how a preseason Caps game would do.
Granted, I’m sure the Caps only have limited control over what CSN chooses to air, but could they not provide at least on online stream for us yearning to watch hockey…ANY HOCKEY!
