Ovechkin and the first pitch...
ESPN Sportscenter had a clip on it this morning that I watched while working out. It juxtaposed some of the things that happened in the game with Ovechkin clips – two players colliding in the outfield with Ovechkin laying out a Tampa player, and the ball going between the third baseman’s legs with him scoring five-hole. Funny stuff.

By the way, AO apparently shoots right, throws left, signs right, and kicks left.
Alex Ovechkin is the exact opposite of me. I shoot left, throw right, sign left, and kick right. Glad there is someone else in the world that is completely farked up with handedness. I’ll throw in that while I shoot left, I golf right. wtf?

Sounds like he is naturally left handed but Russian schools made all children write right handed.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
That’s very old-school supersition. I guess it wouldn’t be surprising that it was still being enforced in Russia in the 90’s then. My dad was a lefty who was forced to write righty in school. Public school, mind you.
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
I’m left handed naturally but learned to write right handed in the early 90s here, in md. Though I did have like a 60 year old woman as my teacher. But I was having a discussion with my left handed friends about how we almost all write right handed and are to a good degree ambidextrous so that we can do every day things.
Right handed can openers, no idea how to work them.

I’m right-handed, but have been to enough cramped Chinese restaurants and sushi bars such that I taught myself how to use chopsticks left-handed. It just takes practice.

Ovi’s handedness reminds me of my own family to some degree. My mother was convinced that she should have been a lefty but was made to do everything with the right hand and that was the reason she didn’t have great hand writing.
My sister was a natural lefty who did everything lefty, as for writing, throwing, and eating. But she batted right handed in baseball. She could actually write backwards VERY well. Hold it up to the mirror and it looked just like her forward handwriting.
And, for the longest time, we could not really determine what “handedness” my elder daughter was. BTW, she’s Ovi’s age but a few months older. She generally ate with her left hand. And would use either hand to color as a little kid. She ended up being a righty for writing but would occasionally use her left hand and is actually a reasonable competent opposite hand writer (and it would shock some of her early grade school teachers). Maybe the fact that it’s a right handed world (and the fact she had broken her left arm the summer before 1st grade) had tipped the balance in the righty direction (and if it were a lefty world, she’d have gone that way.) Our family does have a higher percentage of lefties than the average.

I am selling on Galiev being a better prospect than Orlov, probably selling on Eakin being a better prospect than Orlov as well.
I asked him about that earlier and he said he knows he’s off “industry consensus” on Galiev but that other scouts share a similar opinion of Eakin.

Based on other people’s projects Kuz could be a top wing or 2c, Stan a 2F, Eakin a 3/4C, and Dima 2nd D pair. Eakin has the billing of an energy line guy who can score so…a better Matty P.
By those projections I’d say the order are somewhat in line. Problem for me is I haven’t seen Galiev or Orlov play to give my consensus.

39 year old Noble just led that segment of the test, edging Laich, Ovi and Semin. Boudreau approved.
TarikElBashir
That was Knuble. Darn spell check.
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
I was watching that segment of the practice (the skating timed tested up & down the rink). It seemed that Ovi was the best (of that group) in the early segments but then Knuble was the best in the last two tests. Semin would start out well but struggle with the turns, reminding me of the swimmer who would look good early but lose ground on the flip turns or be the equivalent of the swimmer who just couldn’t master the flip turns. (My years as a swim team parent are obvious.)
As for Knuble, he can now say “Old men rule!”

Good to hear that Knuble and Ovie showed signs of being ready though. Anyone really look like they were dogging it?

The guys (in that group) looked okay. That group for sprints had Ovi, Knuble, Semin, Laich, Patrick McNeill and Patrick Weller. It seemed that Weller had trouble keeping up with that group. He probably needs more work on their skating.
The other group from that practice session for the sprints included Nicky B., Johansson, Alzner, Green (I think), Oisk (I think) and I can’t recall who else).
This is the first time I ever remember Alzner and Carlson being separated at training camp — they’ve always been together before. Speculation is that Alzner was in Group 1 to take Poti’s place since he wasn’t ready.
Most of the rooks (Galiev, Eakin) still remained on the main practice ice to work on stuff.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
Yep, in Alzner’s group, they also had Sean Collins if I remember correctly. He was completely gassed by the second round. Poor guy. And King was in that group. I think he spent too much time fishing this summer… In Ovi’s group, I’m surprised Laich didn’t do better considering his off season workout regime. But maybe it’s more about strength conditioning rather than endurance? Oh! And Beagle was in great shape. He and Alzner were consistently ahead in their subgroup.
Group B, in general, I felt was rather slow. Hendricks looked great though. Group C, Brouwer and especially Chimera. Excellent shape.
Beagle, Hendy, Brouwer, Chimmer. Like hearing some of those guys are coming in ready to work.

Yep, they definitely showed up guys like Green, Backstrom, Mojo….At least in the sprints.
Man, and seeing Alzner on the 1-on-1 today. And having Vokoun in net. I’m so excited!!!
Alzner’s interview he specifically mentions Beags “being an animal” and a guy " you can’t keep out of the gym". I guess he did some work with him. He also praised Green’s conditioning saying he had skated with Greenie some too.

Although it would have been hard to directly compare today’s performance in drills and sprints between the Backstrom/Johansson group and the Beagle/Hendy/Brower/Chimmer groups just be looking given that they were not on the ice at the same time. (The coach could compare their times, of course, but I don’t think a layman fan could just by looking.)

Late to post here, but for those wondering, the players who attended last week’s rookie camp stayed on the other sheet of ice and didn’t skate the timed tests because they went through the testing last week.
Hey sk8 – do you know where I can get a comprehensive roster that includes the rookies? I’m planning on attending camp tomorrow and noticed that the Caps haven’t updated their rosters.

Thought for a second Brandon Noble was out there skating. Of course, he’s actually younger than Knuble, and has been retired a few years already.
So Poti failed his medical exam and will be on LTIR. No surprise I guess, although considering no one has recommended surgery for his issues I wonder if he’s ever going to get back on the ice.

It appears Semin was in some discomfort when the sprint tests for his group were over. They were working on him on one of the benches. He had dropped his stick and his legs were over the ledge. He needed some help to get up (but was reported skating on the “other” ice (i.e. the normal practice sheet) afterwards to test things out.

Tarik continues to make stupid mistakes.
Poti, who signed a two-year $5.75 million contract extension in September, will be placed on long-term injury, meaning his salary will not count against the cap.
Is it too much to ask that people who get paid to write about this stuff actually understand it? Poti will count against the cap as long as he’s on LTIR. It’s just that the Caps will be permitted to exceed the cap by his salary. It’s a distinction with pretty important repercussions come the February trade deadline.
