Skating test re-post
Thought this WaPo article was worth reading from late yesterday aft:
After reading this article I surmise that this skating test must have been one of the reasons Halpern was working so much with Wendy Marco all summer.
One morning after my son’s class she was working with Halpern on speed bursts with hard stops, repeatedly. I also was interested in this part: "research suggests that additional on-ice training prior to training camp can aid in the prevention of groin problems.:"
Poti, Semin, Varly (oops!), others, take note. Be sure to read the last 2 paras about Backstrom. It all sounds so promising. Now, will it translate?
Are you not entertained?
Thanks – I’d forgotten to add that link, but have now.

From Sports Network:
Bold prediction – Marcus Johansson reaches the 50-point plateau.
If we took MJ90’s best 20-game stretch last season and extrapolated that over 82 games he is at 54 points (21G/33A, 144 shots). That’s if he plays at his peak over 82-games.
I don’t see MJ90 getting to 50 points without 20 goals, and I don’t see him getting 20 goals in year two. I have his chances at reaching 50 points (or better) in 2011-12 at 3%.

Well, that’s last year’s peak – presumably this year’s peak will be somewhat higher. But is this year’s norm greater than last year’s peak? I tend to doubt it. I’d also bet the under on 50 and feel pretty comfortable in doing so.

Maybe, but wouldn’t it be great to watch a season of Caps hockey that caused you to eat those words? Just think how good the 2nd (possibly 3rd) line would be playing if things went that well for #90!

And here’s another way to look at it. Excluding Backstrom, the ES point totals for some other full-time Caps centers over the past three years:
2010-11: Johansson (23), Arnott (23, including time in NJ), Hendricks (23), Perreault (11 in 35 games)
2009-10: Morrison (34), Belanger (32, including time with MIN), Perreault (9 in 21)
2008-09: Kozlov (26), Nylander (23), Fedorov (20)
So even if MoJo plays up to a seasoned-veteran-in-a-great-year-for-team-scoring level, it looks like he tops out in the low-30’s at best in ESPs. The top PP points of the above seasons was Kozlov with 15. Most SH points was Steckel with three.
What we’re left with is MoJo – who had 23 ESPs, 3 PPPs and 1 SHP last year – needing to match the Caps’ best 2C season over the last three years at each of ES (34 points), PP (15 points) and SH (3 points) to total 52 points. In his second season. So yeah, it’s pretty unlikely to happen.

So it took a 40-goal year from Alex Semin to get the Caps’ 2C above 26 ES points.
Also, I should note that Kozlov wasn’t really a full-time center in 2008-09 any moreso than Laich was last year – I shouldn’t have included him. So use the Nylander PPPts from that year (13) and the total is exactly 50 points… if MoJo matches the best non-1C ES, PP and SH performances of the past three seasons.

As part of ESPN’s NHL season preview they have asked me to provide a “key stat” for each team. I was wondering what people thought the key stat for Washington was from last year going into this season.
BTW, I have all the teams done and submitted so this isn’t me trolling for content, just curious.

94 goals or 30% (take your pick)
The amount that the Caps’ goals scored dropped by between 09-10 and 10-11 (318 goals down to 224 goals). People out there still think of the Caps as an offensive juggernaut. And perhaps they ought to be. But they weren’t last year. No, the Caps were 19th in the league in offense last year. They scored 6 points less than the median.
So how did they win the Eastern Conference? By allowing only 197 goals, 4th best in the league. They reduced their goals allowed by 36 goals versus the previous year (233 in 09-10, 197 in 10-11). The Caps became an excellent defensive team, but that reputation hasn’t followed them.

I was watching fox5 news this morning and they had one of their female sports reporters, Holly, interviewing BB at the iceplex.
It was baffling to hear a reporter ask NORMAL, well thought out questions and to see Bruce’s response rather than the usual idiotic post game questions
- Bruce. Your team won today. Is that better than losing? If so, please speak to how winning rules and losing sucks and why winning is better than losing.
This, to me, is a really interesting aspect of how the [“euro-heavy”] Caps are perceived. Thanks in particular to Malin and Dimitriy, we know that the imports are smarter and more interesting than is widely appreciated. is it because they’re ‘more comfortable with home-language media? Or is it because their home language media actually Asks Questions, instead of assigning lameass parroting points?

Actually I was referring more to the dumb ass questions the COACH (who is usually Canadian) gets rather than the players. But the players get their share of carbon copied questions.

I saw a short interview with Eakin and Stevenson (one of the 3 videos in the link below)…she’s not a sports reporter though, she’s the things to do around DC person.
Anyway, here’s the link to some of the video (and some photos)

Cody Eakin vs. Mattias Sjogren: there can be only one. Or none. Or possibly, though doubtfully, both. [WashTimes (Whyno), with more on Eakin at Rink Rebel]
I wouldn’t call two guys beating out Jay Beagle for a job all that unlikely. If Eakin really steps up, and Sjogren shows himself to be an NHL player, you could get:
Ovi-Backstrom-Knuble
Brouwer-Johansson-Semin
Eakin-Laich-Ward
Chimera-Halpern-Hendricks
Sjogren
You could even carry Sjogren and Beagle both on the bench and fit under the salary cap. And if Poti’s on LTIR, there’s no reason not to — the Caps won’t be banking money anyway.
I agree that it’s more likely than not that Beagle makes the team, and I’d rather have Eakin and Sjogre playing in Hershey than sitting on the bench in DC to start their first pro season in America, but I don’t think it’s crazy to think they could both make it. Just doubtful. Like you said.
"Fais gros comme moi!" - Alex Ovechkin
I’m not sure if they would want to start out a rookie on what is supposed to be their shutdown line.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
They did last year. I don’t know if they’d want to, but if Eakin claims the gig then good on him. Early season doesn’t matter much to the team anyway and he’ll learn as much in the NHL as he would in the AHL, so if he’s ready for it why not?
Odds are Eakin isn’t a better choice than Chimera for that position at the start of the season, and he shouldn’t be kept up for 10 minutes of 4th line time or to sit on the bench every night. But I’m a big believer in open training camp competitions. If he wins the job on his own merits, then give it to him.
"Fais gros comme moi!" - Alex Ovechkin
by Gould Old Days on Sep 13, 2011 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions
I’d be surprised to see Sjogren make the team over Beagle for two reasons:
1) Cap hit. Sjogren’s 900k cap hit versus Beagle’s 512k is a not-insignificant difference for a team that’s going to be over the cap and will need as much LTIR space as possible.
2) Comfort level. Beagle has been playing on NHL-sized rinks for his entire life and already has some comfort as a pro in North America, which Sjogren doesn’t.
Actually, I can see both of these reasons also weighing towards having Perreault as a 3LW rather than Eakin (other than the NHL-sized rink thing).
Tortorella: Can I get another question? I went in here in a pretty good mood today, too.
Larry Brooks: So did I.
Tortorella: Well, you obviously f***ed that up, didn't you?
The other factor is that Beagle is comfortable with a 4th line or bench role and is not a developing prospect. He’s a good choice to take the fewest minutes on the team and to sit on the bench a lot. That wouldn’t be good for Eakin and Sjogren, who need to play somewhere.
"Fais gros comme moi!" - Alex Ovechkin
by Gould Old Days on Sep 13, 2011 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions
Agreed, although training camp will show how close Sjogren is to NHL playing speed. My guess is that Beagle starts in WAS while Sjogren spends some time in HER, and the two of them eventually share duties as a 4th line wing. Eakin, I imagine, they will want to keep in HER all year if possible so that he develops more (physically and skill-wise) before being exposed to NHL playing speed.
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
I’d add a third reason: waivers. Beagle’s subject to it; Sjogren and Eakin are not.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
(Not meant to set Gouldie off, btw… we can just refer back to the Perreault discussion and save ourselves the effort rather than rehashing.)
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Yeah, and I ended up agreeing with you in the end anyway. I still don’t think Perreault’s really in the running — I don’t see an open slot on the team that he could fill — but I agree that if he plays better in camp than I think he will they should gamble with Perreault rather than risk losing him.
"Fais gros comme moi!" - Alex Ovechkin
by Gould Old Days on Sep 13, 2011 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions
Question. If, as consensus seems to be, Perreault is more of a trading asset than on-ice asset to the Caps at this point, does it make more sense to have him in the AHL skating more minutes or in the NHL as a 3/4 line wing? Which makes him more visible-and-attractive to other teams?
(If this was discussed in an earlier thread, I haven’t seen it.)
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
I think they’ve tried the “showcase him for trade” route. And they’ve tried the “leave him in the AHL to pile up big numbers” route. I don’t believe he’s worth much in trade right now, and for him to get there, he has to show a lot more than he’s shown, wherever he’s playing.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I think this thread has it right. Consider MP as trading fodder only. Then, let’s see how Eakin, Beagle, Slogen show themselves in training camp. My instinct is that it is better for Eakin to spend at least 1/2 a year in Hershey getting used to pro hockey and making his rookie mistakes there plus, of course, getting much more ice time there than in DC this year. He needs to be thought of – and groomed – for the long term as opposed to just opening day, 2011. Beagle seems to be a moderate-to-good 4th liner and can hold that spot down while Eakin is in Hershey. Slogen, I hope, simply makes the team and will be here for the next 2 – 3 years on the 4th and, perhaps, 3rd line eventually replalcing Chimera…and Ward, if he turns out to be an expensive bust.

Two thoughts stand out to me:
8. Very interesting observation from one Eastern Conference coach about the Pittsburgh Penguins: “What they went through last year [season-ending injuries to Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin] is going to make them even better. All of those guys suddenly realized they were still a legitimate contender without those two players. Their confidence will be very high.” The Penguins finished with 106 points before losing in seven to Tampa in the first round. Threw that theory at Dan Bylsma, and he’s a believer.
(silent scowl & grimace)
24. Alexander Semin took a beating from former teammates this summer, but it will be interesting to see how Bruce Boudreau handles him during the season. On the right side, the Capitals’ coach has Semin, Troy Brouwer, Joel Ward and Mike Knuble. Semin must realize that, for the first time, Boudreau has several significant options to threaten him with. How will that affect “The Other Alex?”
Must Semin realize that? We can only hope.
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
I yearn for the day that Alex Semin gets a healthy-scratch when he’s in a slump, though.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Why? Every player goes through slumps. Should they all sit through them?
I yearn for the day that Alex Semin gets a healthy scratch or loses PP TOI when he’s not giving 100% (or some close approximation thereof). I’m much more concerned with effort than results.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Bad Sasha’s appearances are pretty closely correlated with the G-A-S level, imo.
And note that I didn’t say sit “through the slump”; just a game would be a find place to start.

Patron saint of quality footwear.
Yeah, I don’t disagree – just want to make sure the right thing is being punished, and to me, it’s effort (“Bad Sasha,” “G-A-S” level) and not production.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
What do the Unsigned Six have in common? (That’s Drew Doughty, Zach Bogosian, Luke Schenn, Brad Marchand, Kyle Turris and Josh Bailey.) They are all negotiating their second contracts. The huge deals for players of this age will be a target in the upcoming negotiations. So the agents, in particular, look at this as the last shot under a system they like.
Why should that matter to the players? Are the agents driving the bus?
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Of course, if you play Knuble, Brouwer, and Ward all on the right, then you have to play Ovechkin, Jack, and Squat on the left.

Laich thinks he is whatever the team needs. A couple years ago when a defenseman went down during the game, he played D for the remainder.
