Decisions on a New Caps Jersey
As with every off-season, some players leave the team and those who bought their jerseys are now left with the question of (1) continuing to wear the old jersey despite the departure (I still expect to see plenty of 10s show up this season), (2) getting the jersey of a player who stayed (and possibly has a multi-year contract), or (3) getting the jersey of a new acquisition?
(I will note that, given the economy, not buying a jersey this season is obviously a more than reasonable option. If one can afford tickets, showing up and providing support is what matters regardless of threads.)
So, now that training camp is upon us, and the roster numbers seem to be set, I find myself deciding on who I should replace my Varlamov 40 with. I am compelled to pick the number of a player new to the team, as a sign of support for the new guys and (selfishly) to be different from all of the 8s, 19s, 21s, 28s, & 52s - but which one? Halpern seems great for the old-school-returning aspect. Wideman is new enough to the team still and looked great when on the ice at the end of last season. Both Browuer & Hamrlik have two year contracts, while Ward has a four-year contract. Vokoun is the great hope in net for this season.
So, the poll below, if you are/were in the position of getting a new Capitals jersey, which jersey of a new Capitals' player do/would you want to get?

I’m leaning towards Ward, myself, given the length of his contract and (as I read somewhere) the nod to Jackie Robinson by choosing 42.

That was my thinking. 15 and 29 could be one-year and gone.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

If I were to buy a jersey it’d be 90, just cause he’s young, got potential, and I love his game. Or 74, cause he’s a boss.
I figure there will be an significant increase in the number of 27s, 74s, & 90s around the VC this season as well.

Oh, guess I didn’t read it close enough. You want a new player. In that case, I’d go Halpern. Played here before, local guy, solid 4th liner.

All my jerseys at home are timeless classics, because I never get a jersey for a player unless I know that they’ll never go out of style (popular player or retired player).
Skins jerseys: Green & Riggins
Caps jerseys: Bondra (blue jersey), Kolzig (white&blue jersey), Ovechkin (home red)
Just sayin’….that Varly 40 jersey sounds like an impulse buy…
Partially impulsive. I was thinking 21, but my GF has that, and I couldn’t bring myself to be all matchy-matchy with her. 40 had the excellent playoff run and I thought, “If this is the bandwagon, I might as well get on now.” Who knows, maybe it will have a rare collectors value years from now? (Yeah, that is probably deludedly optimistic.)

Amen to the Jersey foul! Or would the acquisition of Crosby be like the acquisition of Jagr?

There really aren’t too many 28s walking around Verizon Center, because people are embarrassed about the innuendo. But if you’re brave enough to wear “SEMIN” around non-hockey fans, I’d totally go for Sasha.

The primary reason against getting a 28, in my mind, is the likelihood that he plays elsewhere next season due to the expected size of his next contract.

Man, that’s what everyone’s been saying for years. But he’s still here.

I’m in a similar position. As much as I loved Bradley, and was prepared to continue to ear his sweater to all games except Florida, that all changed a couple weeks ago. (not for WHAT he said, but for the reasons Ovie explained)
I have never leaned towards the “big” names on the team. If I had to rank the jerseys I would pick up next, they would be:
1. 74 – For just all-around badassery
2. 6 – Loved his contribution to this team last year, and felt losing him was a major reason for our instability in the playoffs
3. 4 – Such an underrated 10/11 campaign… He’s been getting better with age
4. 90 – Really like his potential.
But, I think the economy will win out this year, and I will just wear my hoodie to most games until the appropriate opportunity arises (3rd sweater?!)
So out of curiosity, what makes you say 4’s 10/11 was underrated?

I’m pretty sure I’m the only person wearing a 4.

I admit I’m of 2 philosophies to this. I would like a big-name jersey but never to wear. I want an Ovi jersey, but just… it feels wrong-ish to me personally to wear it. I understand his draw, just personally I see too many already and have no wish to add to the number.
My current “for use” jersey is actually a Fedorov Caps jersey, it was my first purchase when I was turned onto hockey. He of course retired the year after….
Because of that I’ve developed an odd fixation of never wearing and active players jersey. It feels too much like a Jinx! I was at one point joking with friends my next jersey would be Arnott and I’d only wear the jersey of a 2nd-line rental center.
Of your list though, I believe I’d be most tempted to get a Halpern or go with another player. I keep eyeing a Hendricks jersey myself for an aquisition.
I think Fedorov was even better than people recognize (and he’ll be a 1st ballot HOFer) – never anything wrong with wearing his jersey. One of the true hockey greats.

I bought a Fehr 16 jersey at the end of 2010 because he had the new contract, he’d had a good season, and I liked the way he played. I thought 2010-2011 was going to be a big year for him… and then it wasn’t and he got traded.
I already bought a new Johansson jersey, but I’m thinking I might return that and instead get myself a Ward jersey because a) I like the player and b) I like the Jackie Robinson/Hitchhiker’s Guide implications of the number.
Tortorella: Can I get another question? I went in here in a pretty good mood today, too.
Larry Brooks: So did I.
Tortorella: Well, you obviously f***ed that up, didn't you?
I grew up watching baseball and have always been a Yankees fan so 42 to me is Mariano Rivera who’s my favorite player. That’s always been my number and glad to see a Cap with it.
As for a new jersey, I’ve been considering getting one and I might end up getting a Carlson or a Johansson one day but I figure they’ll be around for a while.
Out of the new guys, I’d go for Ward. But I myself am looking at an Alzner or a Carlson jersey, I cannot decide.
As a Carlson WC owner, go for the Alzner. There’s gonna be a lot of 74s, wearing the 27 shows an appreciation for the little things.
Actually Alzner is the one I’m thinking of buying. I’ve already got Carlson and thought a pairing would go well in my closet.

If I wore jerseys (which I don’t), it’s no secret which I’d probably get. My oldest son did get 28, my middle has 21, and the youngest, unfortunately, got 14.
I would go for 90. I think he’ll be here awhile and he’s just a fantastic skater with potential I can’t wait to see realized.
Are you not entertained?
Carlson
This guy is gonna be a star, and not a lot of people have his sweater yet.

I’ll throw out Alzner. A lot of people will say Carlson cause he’s the one that scores – but if you can wear a Brads jersey then you can wear an Alzner.
Alzner is my next jersey. Maybe this year maybe next still not sure.
But whatever jersey you buy – never buy from nhl.com. The quality is CRAP. Either go through icejerseys.com or kettler (not as good as IJ but significantly better then nhl.com)
HALPY
I chose Halpy. This could be the last chance to get Haply’s name on the new jersey style. Besides, Haply just seems like he is already a Cap given that he played here before and is even a DC native(!) while the other guys don’t really seem like Caps yet to me.
Halpern, for multiple reasons, but the major one? He’s my wife’s favorite player, and she has no jersey. So if we get a jersey, it’s that one, for her. I’d consider it for myself, but my jersey is still valid.
