From OFB:
[Laich] scored 7 and 8 goals in his first and second seasons, respectively.
From then on, instead of going into the gym at 9 am, he’d start at 7 am and stay till about 11 am. The season following that summer, however, Laich scored over 20 goals, and a conditioning junkie was born.
Plus, he got a little luckier during that 20-goal season:
Season Sh%
2005-06 5.9
2006-07 6.7
2007-08 17.2
2008-09 12.4
2009-10 11.3
2010-11 7.7
Don’t get me wrong, conditioning certainly helps get him to 82 games so he has every opp to maximize his ice time. However, his regiment change and then the 20 goals I think is merely a coinky-dink.

Obviously, being in great shape enabled him to play harder, longer and that probably contributed to more opportunities on the ice. But more likely, it was his maturation as a hockey player that allowed him to maximize his chances. Still, you’ve got to admire a pro athlete who takes his job so seriously and is willing to pay the price physically in the off-season. I know a lot around here aren’t enamoured with his PC pep talks, but the guy may be one of the hardest workers in hockey.
Concur. There’s no way the conditioning hurt him. He may be attributing too much to his conditioning, but I wish the rest of the team showed the same commitment as he does.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Still full of media pleasing quotes…but there’s no questioning his dedication to giving himself the best chance to succeed.

A buddy from Pittsburgh was in town this Spring, and went to watch the Caps practice. He took two things away from the practice:
1) When Alex Ovechkin misses the net and hits the glass behind the goal, it sounds like gun fire.
2) Brooks Laich works harder at practice than anyone he’s ever seen.

Probably warm up for 20, Strength for about 2, Agility for an hour or so and then a cardio cool down.
Once you get into training, its real easy to lose yourself. But as in one of the early “Alzner is a gym rat” articles from when he got drafted; sometimes you need to be careful you don’t over tax and fatigue your body.
That’s the thing I’m curious about. It seems like it’d be awfully hard to work out for four hours withour overtaxing yourself, even with access to great trainers, nutrition, adequate rest, etc
It all depends on what you’re doing though. If he was doing 4 hours of straight plyometrics or something, I’d agree. It’s possible that a few hours worth of that are things like footwork or hand-eye drills, which could be time-consuming, but not necessarily overtaxing.
He’s likely also counting his arrival and departure time – not his total work time.
Armareddon.

Hopefully he’s taking a bit of time in the steam room or the jacuzzi. Lifting for more than 1.5 hours and doing more than an hour of cardio at the same time is pretty counterintuitive to gaining strength

Frankly, I wish he would be working on his shooting. His work ethic was never an issue, as far as I know. Listen, he just got mega big-6 forward bucks, so he had better start scoring big 6 forward numbers. If – and when the Alexs or Nicky gets hurt and when Knubes’ production drops off, Brooksie had better be scoring.
I don’t think it’s out of the question that for younger/juniors players, conditioning helps shooting percentage. I know the current thinking is that there’s very little mature adults can do to help their shooting percentages, but as far as I know that work hasn’t been done with younger, developing players.

From NHL:
Backstrom dropped from 33 goals to 18 and from 101 points to a career-low 65 in the first season of a 10-year deal — a major reason why Washington struggled to score.
Chicken or egg?

More chicken/egg stuff: Was moving Backstrom up and down the first and second line to help jump start his scoring, or was it a cause of his slump?
"I remembered when he said that and I kind of looked at him during the warm up and told myself that I got to shut these guys out tonight." - Michal Neuvirth, 02.06.11.
In all fairness, WSH had 118 PP opportunities this year as opposed to 153 the season before (which they lead the league in).
Not that they did much with the 118 they had, but practice makes perfect.
The slower paced offense was a good reason why his production went down statistically
Maybe he won’t get 100 pts this year, but I expect more than 65.
Another note:
The 2009-2010 season I think we all learned that Nikki’s a great shooter. His shots jumped from 174 to 222 with a 14.9 shooting %. This year his shots dipped only a bit to 202, but his shooting % plummeted to his worst ever 8.9
Looks like a bad all around year for Nik. Maybe he was struggling with something we didn’t know about?
Power play, power play, power play. That’s how Backstrom got to thirty goals.

Yeah, but a lot of the backdoor feeds he got from Semin to pot a good number of those PP goals have been taken away by opposing teams.

I don’t know which one this would fall under, but Washington sturggled to score, in part, due to Backstrom’s career low 65 points and overall “struggle-itude”.
When your first line center isn’t clicking, your first line isn’t clicking. It’s something we saw all year, something we hoped would be remedied, something that effectively cost the Capitals a spot in the 3rd round. There were many instances in which Backstrom had pivotal goals on his stick and failed to convert mere feet away from the net.
In a different situation, one where your “second line center” doesn’t completely disappear in the 2nd round, or where the majority of your offense isn’t being powered by a rookies and grinders, the Capitals wouldve been fine without Backstrom at the top of his game.

Anaheim, CA Down 4 goals to 1 with 20 minutes left, it seemed as though the Capitals were all but broken after 2 periods of rough and tumble hockey when Bruce Boudreau addressed the locker room.

The Capitals then came out in their third jerseys and forfeited the game.

I should add that, in true Japers’ fashion, I haven’t actually read the article and don’t know if it’s worthwhile, but dismissing something just because it’s written by a Penguins fan is silly.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
Ah, c’mon. Some of it is funny, like:
What’s a kid like Jay Beagle supposed to do when his captain is the social networking equivalent of an 11-year-old girl?

The piece over on “The Score” about the new locker room leadership was alright..
Just can’t stand to have someone compare a locker room that is on a 10 game winning streak with a locker room of a team that’s on a 6-7 game losing streak and assume that’s exactly how they both typically and always operate. NO.
Not to mention both “locker room views” presented were edited for a television series, and the narrative for the first two shows was “Caps bad, Pens good.”

No question. Shame the cameras weren’t rolling during the Caps 14 game winning streak. The locker room was a much different place I’m sure.

Happy birthday today to former Stingrays defenseman Dustin Stevenson!
Former Rays defenseman? Does that mean he’s moving up to the Bears this year? I totally missed that.
(Also totally missed his b-day for Clips, grrr.)
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Yeah, I have a question about Stevenson. In last year’s development camp, he was the rage. In this year’s camp, I don’t think I heard a word about him other than a scuffle or two. Assuming he played, should I assume he was ‘underwhelming’ this year? What does anyone know? Is he slipping down the prospects’ chart?
Dunno. Last year he was sort of a Cinderella story, a big defenseman playing in the relative anonymity of the SJHL who got noticed by a caps scout and signed to a gen-u-wine NHL contract.
This year? Not so much. But if the official Stingrays twitter calls him a former Rays d-man, I guess he must be getting promoted.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Nope, he’s signed to a standard three-year entry level contract, and this will be Year Two.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
OK; thanks. I guess he sounds kind of ‘meh’ at this point. A year ago, he seemed like he was approaching Orlov on the depth chart but now it seems he might be a reach to even be a 5 or 6D in Hershey some day. I only bring this up because I worry a bit about the D pipeline which appears thinner than the forwards pipeline. In terms of the next year or two, beyond Orlov it seems that only McNeill and Wey have big league potential and even they might be stretches. Is there anyone else I am missing?
Stevenson was never approaching Orlov. Anyone that characterized it that way was misleading. Stevenson could be a nice dark horse story, but he’s not going to be a special player in the NHL (not to imply that Orlov will, but he does have the skill to do it).
Flemming has the potential to make the NHL, but he is a long shot as well. We’ll see how it plays out. He’s not very big, but I love his game.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Interesting, thanks. That means you’re not big on McNeill or Wey either? Frankly, neither have knocked my socks off so I am not surprised. Good to hear about Flemming; I will keep my eyes on him. It does seem, then, that the D pipeline might require some restocking at some point. From what I could tell about the big names in next year’s draft, the big names for the Lottery picks (I can hope) are forwards so he might not come from there. There are always trades too. I just wish we had another couple promising names, though.
I think Wey has a lot of potential as a stay at home type guy. He’ll never put up big numbers but I think he can play. McNeil is a bit tougher, he needs a chance but he’s getting close to make-or-break point. If he keeps getting passed by younger guys in HER, what does that say?
There is at least one stud D that projects to be a top pick in next year’s draft, and there is too much time left to even talk about concretely right now.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Ryan Murray is a potential 1st overall pick playing the WHL, so there’s that. This year’s draft is loaded with Canadian and American D, but not much by way of F outside of Europe, at least not at the high end.

Yeah, that is pretty much what I read. The elite ‘top’ (say 1 – 5) seem to be European/Russian forwards with the D coming up fast in the 6-12 or so slots. Of course it is way too early to tell at this point. The CAPS should get somebody pretty good regardless of position. I can’t believe I am even talking about that draft a year from now. I just can’t wait for the season to begin so ANY hockey talk is GOOD hockey talk.
