I still don’t understand why Vokoun signed for so cheap? Does anyone have an explanation as to why we got him for so little, and what Vokoun might have been thinking?

by reesem37 on Jul 3, 2011 10:05 AM EDT reply actions

So as much as we want to praise McPhee for the Vokoun deal, more praise should go around.

Other reasons he came here for cheap
Chance to win, Ovie, Ted L, Fan Base, Kettler,

This has been discussed in the past, DC was never a place that people wanted to play. That is a thing of the past. This is a result of hockeytown folks. Our goalie situation is nothing less then salary cap happy hour.

by SA-Town on Jul 3, 2011 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s exactly right—George gets a lot of credit, when almost every GM would have happily made the same deal. But Vokoun just wanted to play here.

God that seems weird to write. It wasn’t that long ago we had to overpay Brian Pothier to come here.

Here’s the bigger question: Is GMGM really smart enough to have planned for this with the Varly trade? Eliminate the competition for Vokoun so that he’d have to drop his price and come here? Is he that crafty?

We're Hüsker Dü and we're on MTV. Who are you, and what are you on?

by bilspacecadet on Jul 3, 2011 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

We know for a fact that COL was in contact with Voukon prior to the trade. Read into that as you will.

The results – Capitals move a piece who had no desire to be here for a potential (and likely) lottery pick, and a 2nd.

The Capitals sign arguably the best FA goaltender available for 100k less of what Michael Leighton is making in the AHL.

Did McPhee at the very least have an epic f’ing win? Absolutely. Did he plan it that way? I don’t know if he could foresee Voukon coming at so cheap, but Voukon clearly really wanted to come here. Even though he priced himself out at what he probably wanted (~5.0 million), he came here for nothing because McPhee basically said “That’s all we can give you right now.”

The pick will be better than where the Caps end up picking, but I don’t think Colorado will be in the lottery next year. That team was decimated by injuries and bad goaltending last year. Don’t forget, they were challenging Vancouver for first in the division until nearly the all-star break.

by EmilyB on Jul 3, 2011 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

No doubt. It’s still a fleecing, but I’m not seeing Colorado being a lottery team again – particularly in a year when they don’t hold their own pick.

Edmonton is still rebuilding, Calgary and Minnesota will still be mediocre – I could easily see Colorado being second in the division and a fringe playoff team if they stay healthy.

Armareddon.

by D'ohboy on Jul 3, 2011 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Colorado might be more healthy, but they still have a ton of questions. Varly is an awkward save attempt away from the LTIR, and Gigure is probably average at best. There defense is fairly young, and while they have a great young foundation, not a lot of complimentary players to go around.

I honestly don’t think it’s out of the question to expect a pretty poor season from them.

by Charlie Foxtrot on Jul 3, 2011 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

They lost more man-games to injury last year than any other team in the league, hands-down.

Varly may be injury-prone, and Giguere may be mediocre, but I think you’re massively underestimating just how bad Anderson/Budaj/Elliot were last year.

Colorado still has Stastny, Duchene, O’Reilly and McClement down the middle. If Mueller is healthy, he’ll join Landeskog, Jones, Galiardi and possibly Joey Hishon on the wing.

With the Hejda signing, they shored up their defense (which isn’t really all that young anymore), and they’ve got depth down in Lake Erie in the event of injury.

The pick will be higher than where the Caps draft, but like I said, I’ll be surprised if the Caps get a pick in the top-10. I’d guess something around 12-18.

Armareddon.

Even without them in the lineup, Colorado will be better than last year. I’m not going to say they’re a playoff team by any means, but they likely won’t be in the top-10 picks next year.

by D'ohboy on Jul 3, 2011 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

If you aren’t a playoff team, you’re most likely a top 10. We’ll see, I think COL could go a lot of ways, but for the last 3 years they’ve basically been a top 10 pick caliber team. Surely you make your own luck to a degree, but it sounds like Voukon is genuinely very happy to play for a contender. Any elite player who takes such a pay cut and has a smile on his face is probably very okay with his situation.

The best news? Voukon could be extremely hungry this year. One, it’s the first time really ever he played for a contender and he’s basically playing for his final payday for ‘12 UFA class. He’s going to come to play.

by Charlie Foxtrot on Jul 3, 2011 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think GMGM could have planned for Vokoun to come down this far. I’m sure he could read some of the goalie market contours, like PHI taking out Bryz and thus filling the largest G need for a contender. But even trading Varly to COL, they still made Vokoun an offer. I’m not sure how GMGM could have planned for Vokoun to turn down higher offers to come here.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

by Rob Parker on Jul 3, 2011 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah…unlikely he pulled off the Varly deal with this in mind, closing any obvious spot for Vokoun to land and offering him a chance to win here next year. But when you make a good move, sometimes dominoes fall your way as well.

Still cannot believe that a goalie that still has some good years left took that much of a pay cut. I understand players want to win, but for a 35 year old premier netminder you would think he’d want at least three years at close to what he was making last year.

I guess he just really wants a chance to win. If that’s the case then I love the guy. Not many players would take a 1/3 pay-cut just to play for a contender.

$7.1 Million for Alzner and Brouwer combined would really hurt, but the Caps could then start the season minus Poti, Fehr, and Chimera and with 12 forwards if they add two guys who are at or near the minimum (say, Aucoin and Beagle). It wouldn’t take very long for them to be able to afford a third forward, say Cody Eakin. (I say Eakin because he doesn’t have to pass through waivers. You can send him up and down as needed). Later in the season, they can upgrade someone to Sjogren.

Not ideal, but possible.

Using the figures provided in the Copper and Blue article linked to above, offer the following contracts:

Karl Alzner, 1-4 years, $4.7m per season
Troy Brouwer, 1-3 years, $3.1m

Obviously, this is all speculation.

by Rob Parker on Jul 3, 2011 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Alzner’s 4.7 offer would net a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
Brouwer’s 3.1 offer would net a 1st and 3rd.

You simply can’t let Alzner go, but for an Edmonton 1st and 3rd, would you accept Brouwer’s departure? We’d recoup the first lost in acquiring him, and in theory, it’d be a higher pick in a better draft?

$1,034,249 annual cap hit or less: No compensation

I guess every team could use a guy like Brouwer. You can’t have too many guys like that. The better questions is how many teams can afford to overpay a guy like Brouwer, and overpay Alzner (by a lot), and have Scott Gomez on their roster.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

If they sign Alzner and Brouwer to those deals they have 500K in cap space and need a depth forward and Gorges is gone or they are in the same spot as us. An RFA exposed and a need to move salary without leverage.

They also have Price and Subban RFA next year.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

by Rob Parker on Jul 3, 2011 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Realistically though, only Brouwer is available. Every GM in the League knows that GMGM matches anything that’s not ludicrous.

Oh, I thought we were talking about Alzner in the “GMGM matches anything that’s not ludicrous.”

No, the 2 isn’t incredibly valuable, but 2nd round picks are the currency of the trade deadline, so it at least helps us there.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

by Rob Parker on Jul 3, 2011 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Hah. Indeed we were. Going back to my hole now. In my mind I’ve completely dismissed anyone getting an offer sheet to Alzner…so I naturally transitioned to Brouwer there.

by Yoshietree on Jul 3, 2011 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Risk for the team that makes the offer too – 7 day period to match.

Caps could wait all 7 days, then match, which reduces the signing team’s opportunities to sign other players while all the remaining quality free agents get snapped up.

Scary…and actually a good Idea for Montreal. No way we could match those numbers. $4+ mil for Alzner is rediculous. Just because a team tenders an offer sheet does not mean a player must accept it…can’t he decline it and still sign with the original team for less?

by Goaliemama on Jul 3, 2011 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, he can decline. It’s happened before. You just take the deal to the GM, show them what you have in front of you, and then hammer something out that makes sense for both sides. Jeff Carter did that for PHI earlier in his career. He should have taken the money.

And Jeff Carter isn’t the only one to choose to not sign an offer sheet earlier in his career; definitely depends on the interests of the player as well as the relationship and communication between the team/player/agent.

What's the liklihood...

I’m kind of oblivious when it comes to much of the trade/cap kinda options out there, but am finding myself hooked on all this off season action by GMGM… admittedly I’m not much up on the stats of who trumps who on paper, and thus may be way off base on this… but the last few days of chatter re: fitting Alzner and Bower under the cap got me thinking- how possible is it that GMGM works a trade for Schultz, Fehr, maybe Chimmera (tho I’m a bit of a fan of his speed and how it seems to keep D’s honest) for picks and prospects then dumps Poti’s/King’s salary in LTIR/Hersey…
Question 1- Could we possibly find away to fit Hannon, Brower and Alzner in under the cap?
Question 2- Any thoughts on whether Hannon might make this work by taking a cut in $$ in lieu of Yrs?
Question 3- If we could ink Hannon over Schult- are we that much stronger a roster?

Hannan’s gone. Hamrlik took his roster space. Caps have 7 NHL D, and I don’t expect to see any changes to that part of the team anymore, other than moving Poti. Whatever machinations McPhee does will have to come among the forwards.

I could see him trying to move Erskine or Schultz and bringing up a Hershey.

by Goaliemama on Jul 3, 2011 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I think GMGM watched as Wideman, Poti, Green and Carlson were all lost to injury or nicked up and decided that a team really cannot have too many puck-movers. Hamrlik may not be Hannan’s equal defensively, but he’s much better at moving the puck up-ice.

Moreover, I think Hannan will end up moving back west.

by D'ohboy on Jul 3, 2011 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Question 1- Could we possibly find away to fit Hannon, Brower and Alzner in under the cap?

It would probably take $7.5 million or so to sign them all ($3.0 for Hannan, $2.5 for Alzner, $2.0 for Brouwer). The Caps would have to move Alexander Semin (and get no roster player back) to make that happen, and it assumes Tom Poti’s contract comes off the cap.

Question 2- Any thoughts on whether Hannon might make this work by taking a cut in $$ in lieu of Yrs?

His cap hit was $4.5 million. I don’t know that taking more than a one-third hair cut on his next contract is reasonable. Don’t even know if that much is, considering that other teams have to spend big just to hit the payroll floor for next season. And, the Caps have six solid defensemen — Green, Carlson, Wideman, Schultz, Hamrlik, and (assuming he is signed) Alzner. If Hannan was to be signed, who sits or gets moved?

Question 3- If we could ink Hannon over Schult- are we that much stronger a roster.

Schultz is signed through 2014. That isn’t an issue.

It was the “younger, highly skilled players” that I think people were questioning. That phrase seems directed at the core players. It certainly didn’t sound like it was referring to prospects making the jump from the juniors.

by Ginga on Jul 3, 2011 2:20 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I think there just might have been a disconnect with the phrase, “how to train”.

In one sense it could mean that these older players will use their experience to help modify the younger guys’ workouts and help them better prepare for an NHL season/post-season, something that these older players have done for many years.

In another, almost connotatively, it comes across like they’re training is far too ineffective. This, then, taken to the next level as almost calling out the players for being out of shape.

The interviews today confirm what most expected with Vokoun…once the big contract payday/term was gone, a winner was the choice; makes sense. Interesting that Florida was still seeking his return even after signing Theodore based on what was reported by Whyno from the Vokoun interview. As I posted yesterday, I thought once the starting goalie, big contract slots were gone that Chicago, Detroit or Washington were 3 likely destinations. Glad it was the Caps.

From Whyno’s blog entry:

General manager George McPhee did not guarantee Vokoun he would be the starter – "I wouldn’t expect it if I was signing for 5 million," the goalie said. He’ll split duties in some way with Michal Neuvirth but could very well be counted on as the No. 1 guy.

by sk84fun_dc on Jul 3, 2011 1:09 PM EDT reply actions

Regardless of which 2 are playing (Neuvirth, Vokoun, Holtby) I suspect BB will stick by the ‘hot glove’ streak.

If he wasn’t signing in Florida with a three year offer that was obviously for more than he’s getting here, he clearly didn’t have much faith in the team/management there. would Columbus consider moving Tyutin for Poti/Erskine/Fehr/Chimera & a pick? It would mainly be a salary dump AND we’d upgrade our defense too.

Check out The Breakaway Goal on the web at The Breakaway Goal Blog, The Breakaway Goal Multimedia Blog, or on Twitter @breakawaygoal

by thebreakawaygoal on Jul 3, 2011 1:27 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I think they’d want Schultz instead. Tyutin is a good defensemen. Erskine is a 6D, Fehr is good but constantly hurt, Chimera is a borderline 4th liner making a great deal of money for what he does.

Remember, Columbis is already in the market for d-men. HIGHLY doubtful they move Tyutin.

by Charlie Foxtrot on Jul 3, 2011 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Most of what I have read about the Wisniewski signing is that they expect him to be paired with Tyutin and that they are still looking at add a dman. He’s UFA after this season, but given his cap hit and salary not sure why they’d move him given the other moves they have made.

I’m listening to GMGM on the Voukon conference call, and I’m strongly convinced that more moves are coming. If it’s for Semin for cap relief and another roster player, if it’s Chimera for simple dump. More moves are coming. He is basically saying that they were done a few days ago, and that the chance forced their hand. I’m wondering if they get a great deal for a guy like Semin, for a guy like Schultz, do they make that move to help with some relief and maybe for something that can help them now.

by Charlie Foxtrot on Jul 3, 2011 1:37 PM EDT reply actions

My major concern with the next moves coming is how it could hurt the team next season where we currently have 11 players signed accounting for 53% of the current salary cap. Where we’ll have major players like Mike Green, Dennis Wideman, and John Carlson who would be up for a major salary raise. Raising JC to 4.5 and resigning MG52 and Wideman would give the caps 75% of their salary cap for 14 players. Not counting the multi year signings for Brouwer and Alzner.

Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."

Hope Orlov is ready and say bye bye to Wideman.

"...what're you gonna do?"

by Rainbow, Kitty, Beer on Jul 3, 2011 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Wideman is most likely gone, so I’d scratch him out. Just too much salary (~4 million, and I don’t think he’d want to take much of a haircut). Remember that Orlov is eventually going to want to be brought along so he can compete for a spot.

Mike, as much as I like him as a player and how rare he is, might not necessarily be in the teams’ long future plans if he wants a decent raise. Carlson and Alzner are quickly turning into the core of this team, and will be made priority IMO.

Remember a lot of guys are coming off the books, too. Knuble, Wideman, Chimera, Fehr, and Semin are coming off the books if no moves are done. If Semin is moved for a lesser contract, it can still work. The Capitals are in a very lucky position where they’re getting good, perhaps fantastic, goaltending for a cheap amount. Lot of flexibility because of that.

by Charlie Foxtrot on Jul 3, 2011 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

We’ve also got a fresh crop of prospects trying to earn a spot this year on an already full roster. Quite the offseason.

I hope that after the dust settles, Sjogren gets a chance to play on the 4th line. Based on his interviews it seems like he’s a physical player and a hard worker. This team could use that young energy and hunger to push some of the veterans.

by Kolzilla on Jul 3, 2011 1:39 PM EDT reply actions

I think he gets the chance, but it will be in training camp and the preseason. If he can’t show he’s ready then, there simply isn’t room on the roster to let him grow into the spot.

by brooksengr on Jul 3, 2011 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

The competition for the bottom six I think could be brutal. Eakin was possibly inches from making the team last season. Chimera is quickly looking like an overpaid cog that doesn’t really have a spot – if he’s still here, I’m sure he’s going to be hungry. Hendricks has spent his short NHL career fighting for a spot, so I’m betting he’ll be game. Halpern is the only lock on the fourth line. A guy like Sjogren is going to have to fight anyway, but it’s going to be very hard to learn the NA game that quickly.

by Charlie Foxtrot on Jul 3, 2011 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Eakin will keep a bunch of Caps players honest this preseason.

The Duchesne Cup games will be “must see” hockey, methinks.

Lines in 11-12

I saw somewhere and I think it was Whyno or CSN had an attempt at predicting the lines for this coming season.. I know they had this.

Ovie-Nick-Semin
Brouwer-MarJo-Knuble
Chimmer-Liach-Ward
Fehr-Halpern-Hendricks

Green-Hamerlik
Alzner-Carlson
Wideman-Schultz

Intresting to see a guess that Semin would be on the top line, I know those 3 have defensive brain cramps, But I wonder if getting Brouwer and Ward allow the Caps to have those 3 as a top line.

Of course this is a radical guess with what we know is on the roster now. What happens down the road will change and it’s back to the drawing board. :)

by DBake on Jul 3, 2011 4:37 PM EDT reply actions

Semin's not a bad defensive player...

if he could rid himself of the unnecessary stick fouls that have plagued him throughout his career, he’d be a good defensive player – not Selke good…but certainly above average.

by shotfromthepoint on Jul 3, 2011 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I would love to see that line, I dont think Knuble can keep up anymore as a first line winger.

And it looks like we have more depth now and hopefully we can rid of that tag of being a one line team.

by DBake on Jul 3, 2011 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t get this “Knuble can’t keep up on the first line anymore”. Does anyone even watch Capitals hockey past January? Yes, he is a very slow starter for the first half of the season, but the guy is just fine when the season starts to heat up.

Winterion Game Studios

by winterion on Jul 3, 2011 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Ovie is the only subpar defender on that top line. I’d like to see Semin with JoJo for an extended period to see if they can develop some chemistry. That won’t happen, of course. And really, any debate about what the lines should be is moot since BB will continually scramble them.

"...what're you gonna do?"

by Rainbow, Kitty, Beer on Jul 3, 2011 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

This concerns me. 1st line should bounce back and be good. 3rd and 4th lines are also projected to do a very good job. But the second line is a big question mark. I don’t see them starting the year very well (unless sasha-meter is high) and BB will keep changing lines, not letting x-90-28 develop chemistry.

by Sjomin on Jul 3, 2011 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

The 2nd line doesn’t have to be great if you have a really strong third line and a good checking fourth line. Obviously the first line is very strong.

The problem in years past is that the third line has basically been 2nd line castoffs. There was never a shutdown line. A combination of Ward, Laich, Brouwer, Halpern, Chimera, Sjogren, Hendricks allows you to have some very tough bottom six lines. That will elevate the pressure put on the top lines.

PHT wrote a story on who the Caps and Sabres will have to LTIR/get rid of to get under the cap:
http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2011/07/03/with-capitals-and-sabres-in-cap-crunch-who-gets-moved-to-sign-restricted-free-agents/

Synopsis:
Caps could rid of Semin, and otherwise send Fehr out, or put Poti on LTIR.

Sabres will most likely send out Kotalik or an established D-man. Of the D-men, Leopold and ShaMo are the best candidates, but it appears ShaMo is the most likely to be moved.

by brooksengr on Jul 3, 2011 4:39 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think Fehr will be ready to start the season either…so…

If you could find someone to take Erskine’s contract for a 6th or 7th round pick, with the money saved from Fehr and Poti, the Caps will be in good shape – real good shape I’d think. And when Fehr gets healthy, perhaps move him as well. I like what I see from him(Fehr), I just see it too infrequently.

by shotfromthepoint on Jul 3, 2011 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Erskine for a 6 or 7? Any GM in the league would do that.

He’s a solid 6D, IMO. On the Caps, he’ll be 7D and, we’ve seen a need to go 8 and 9 deep in the past. (Remember Brian Fahey?).

No way he’s going anywhere.

Erskine has kind of a bad contract. But the Capitals need to be losing contracts like Chimera or Fehr first, as there at least viable replacements for them. Who replaces Erskine? McNeil? Some other, unknown d-man who comes in around 800k-1.0 million?

Brouwer will drop them too (just not nearly as often). But I see your point.

by Charlie Foxtrot on Jul 3, 2011 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Erskine is our heaviest fighter. I’d fear for Brouwer’s, Knuble’s, or Hendricks’ safety if he had to answer the bell with a legit fighter like McQuaid or Orr. Erskine I would expect to lose, but not come out with a concussion.

That, and he serves as someone on this team whose fists are worth fearing.

I bet a good number of players around the league have watched his fight of the year scrap. He is a solid player, a good character, a modest cap hit, and the Caps’ heaviest fighter. He is not someone we should lose without serious, serious consideration

by j762 on Jul 3, 2011 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Erskine doesn’t fight as much anymore because of previous concussions. It is a definite risk for him every time he drops the gloves.

by Forsch31 on Jul 3, 2011 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

that, and we all know how this team goes through defencemen. To have a solid player with grit and experience to fall back upon before turning to the AHL is a benefit which I think the Caps should hold very close

by j762 on Jul 3, 2011 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to mention the fact that Erskine seems to have the right attitude. He will sit on the bench and not complain, but he will work his tail off to play well enough to stay in the line-up, whether that means he has to fight, block shots, or move his tree trunk legs fast enough that he is absolutely gassed at the end of every shift. It was pretty clear from his comments that he wants a regular 3rd pairing slot. This should push the other D to be sure they are playing well enough to keep him on the bench.

I was never an Erskine hater. Sure, his contract is a bit high, but I don’t think you send him off before the season starts, and especially not for a 6th or 7th Rd pick. If you get stuck in terms of salary later in the season, then maybe, but not while other D are on IR, and the Hershey D are barely seasoned to start the season.

by brooksengr on Jul 3, 2011 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Despite a good year, Erskine is still a fringe 6D, as evidenced by the Wideman and Hannan moves last year. GMGM hoped to have a top-6 of Green-Hannan, WIdeman-Schultz, Alzner-Carlson.

I don’t mind him as a 7D who can be put in the lineup when the Caps might need a little more toughness. He seems like a good character guy as well.

Armareddon.

by D'ohboy on Jul 3, 2011 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think he’ll ever play because “the Caps might need a little more toughness.” He’ll play due to injury and have an ample opportunity, but against which team would you sacrifice talent for toughness? Who sits? I’d image Schultz because he’s the only guy that you don’t lose a lot of puck handling talent, but he’s still much better than Erskine. I don’t see BB sitting any of his best 6 healthy D for the sake of toughness.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

by Rob Parker on Jul 3, 2011 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Meh – if the Caps were in a grudge-match game (think a TB rematch after Downie has done something Downie-ish), I could see BB throwing Erskine in the lineup instead of Schultz.

Armareddon.

by D'ohboy on Jul 3, 2011 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s not really something they’ve done at all under BB. Maybe he feels the drop off from Schultz to Erskine is small enough to justify it now (i.e. King was so bad he was unplayable), but BB seems like he wants the most talented 12/6 on the ice he can get.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

GMGM is not going to get rid of semin now

He made this clear when he chose to re-sign Semin during the season.

If Semin’s status this year was going to be in doubt, McPhee would have waited until after the post-season to sign him. He did not. He gave Sasha a deal, and is sticking to him at least until October.

As expected, another player moving on. I was glad when he re-upped last time on the 2 year contract, but these guys want an opportunity and they see it’s limited with Washington.

And as usual for Leone, Tim Leone already has a piece with quotes from Pinizzotto and this information:

Pinizzotto said he got a contract offer to re-sign with the Washington Capitals and personal appeals from Caps head coach Bruce Boudreau and assistant coach Bob Woods to remain in the organization.

"They reached out to me," Pinizzotto said. "I felt it was time to move on. It was a tough decision. Hopefully, it turns out to be the right one."

Though Pinizzotto got one NHL recall from the Caps, he never played a game for them.

Highest paid on what is technically a 2-way contract, very likely, but there are a handful of big AHL only contracts, do not think they are quite that big but because actual salaries for AHL aren’t released if it’s an AHL only contract, no way to know for sure. And of course, since the cap, we have seen guys playing on one-way NHL contracts making more than that in the AHL…even guys like Sean Collins last season; not just the big names like Redden, Nylander Commodore and Souray, etc.

Which makes 5 AHL vets and 1 tweener per the AHL rules…the max allowed to dress in any game; can add more to the roster, but when all are healthy just makes things complicated. Never thought much of him when he played in the Carolina and Chicago (Norfolk was affiliate before Rockford) organizations, seemed to have more than what he showed, but lost track of him these last few years when he was in the other conference.

by sk84fun_dc on Jul 3, 2011 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Can you explain that rule?

Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

by STLSpidey on Jul 3, 2011 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s an AHL level rule. Does not apply to the goalies. Only relates to roster dressed for a specific game, but most teams try not to carry more than the max on the roster. Again, there is no roster limit, just for game roster game by game.

So there have been times during the season when Hershey has carried more than the 6 based on circumstances, especially if one is injured for awhile or Caps send someone down that was not planned for before the season started.

Of the 18 skaters:

12 have to have played fewer than 260 professional games in the NHL, AHL and elite leagues in Europe (not clear where the cut-off is with the definition of the European leagues to be honest)

1 can have played between 260 and 320

5 can have played more than 320.

Only regular season games played count for this rule.

A team can dress fewer vets, just can’t go over. It’s a development rule, in theory, to give younger players more of an opportunity to dress for games.

by sk84fun_dc on Jul 3, 2011 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Wonder if they’ll adjust those numbers with fewer games in the AHL season.

You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!

by EmilyB on Jul 3, 2011 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

They’ve changed the games played number and the number of vets over the years. Doubt they’ll change it, but it’s possible.

Grrr, Why did I type that…here’s the wording from the AHL site under FAQs.

What is the AHL’s development rule?

In the AHL, player development is a top priority. The American Hockey League and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association have the following development rule in place for the 2010-11 season:

Of the 18 skaters (not counting two goaltenders) that teams may dress for a regular-season game, at least 13 must be qualified as “development players.” Of those 13, 12 must have played in 260 or fewer professional games (including AHL, NHL, IHL and European elite leagues), and one must have played in 320 or fewer professional games. All calculations for development status are based on regular-season totals as of the start of the season.

by sk84fun_dc on Jul 3, 2011 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

And yes, for now, it still reads 2010-11 season, but I haven’t heard anything about the numbers changing.

by sk84fun_dc on Jul 3, 2011 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

It’d make sense for that rule to change, with the numbers dropping starting next year. But I hope it doesn’t — it’s a rule that doesn’t help an org like Hershey win Calder Cups.

Atta dinnin stick a who!

by Gould Old Days on Jul 4, 2011 8:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I think I read the AHL meeting are taking place right now so it’s still possible it could change, but I’m guessing it doesn’t.

by sk84fun_dc on Jul 5, 2011 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Got it. Thanks. You’re right in that it forces this to be a developmental league.

Random Question

Would anybody be terribly opposed to locking Alzner up for a mega-length deal (say until he’s 35 or something) for a cap hit of $2 million or something, on sort of a bell-curve salary structure?

by bigonetimer on Jul 3, 2011 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Bad strategy, I think. Alzner may outperform, and be unhappy not being able to capitalize with a new contract. Alzner may underperform and the team would be unhappy with the long-term contract. Other players would be weirded out by a long term contract to a relatively unproven young gun.

Free agency is nerve wracking, but a necessary part of a healthy sports league.

by skyywise on Jul 3, 2011 8:31 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Yeah. Long contracts make sense for proven elites like Ovechkin or Backstrom, but I could see some eyebrows raised among the team if Alzner gets a 10 year deal.

The funniest thing to me this whole offseason has been the transformation of the Flyers. In the past you’ve kind of had a certain air of caution when playing them cause they were known to take your head off when you weren’t aware, but looking at their roster now they are more like the Philly Cream Cheese than the Broad Street Bullies.

OH YEAH AND WE GOT TOMAS FUCKIN VOKOUN FOR 1.5 MILLION DOLLARS. A TOP FIVE GOALTENDER IN THE WORLD TOOK A PAYCUT TO PLAY FOR US!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
