Washington Capitals 2011 Development Guide
Location: Kettler Capitals IcePlex, Arlington, VA at Ballston Common Mall
- All 4 2011 draft picks are on the 19 player roster released by the Capitals.
- Of the 19 prospects on the roster: Eight (8) are signed to NHL ELCs (contracts): Eakin, Flemming, Grubauer, Mitchell, Orlov, Sjogren, Stevenson, and Anderson (expected to return to juniors)
- Not on roster: As far as I know the Caps still retain Nick Larson's rights, but as an NCAA prospect (pay own way) he has yet to attend a Capitals camp. Kuznetsov is the only other unsigned prospect not on the roster, but he wasn't expected to attend camp this summer. I'm not including DeSimone and Dunn, Capitals have their rights until August 15, but no indication at this time that either will be with the organization.

Nice post, Sk8! Kudos to you.

Thanks, I thought it would good to have all in one place.
A few more notes:
- Galiev and Orlov are already in the area in advance of camp
- Prospects retaining NCAA eligibility have strict NCAA requirements in terms of paying own way to attend camp so it’s possible not all of the Caps NCAA prospects will attend
- Possible local prospects/prospects with local ties who could be invited as FAs as has happened in the past with some of these players and others; some possibilities: Brendan Woods? Casey Thrush? Nick Sorkin? Chris Bond?
Thanks for this excellent resource and though I don’t often ask, I hope everyone recs this post so it sticks to the top.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Great stuff, sk8 – thanks for it.

Had a question on the development camps
Are these just solely camps for talent evaluation of the draftees, current college players, and international prospects, and/or do these rosters also get a chance to square off against some other of these developmental rosters throughout the league? It could give guys imo better time in competition playing in our system against another team which is playing its own system. In addition it can give assistant coaches opportunities to improve on their skills as at least some of them would be looking into head coaching opportunities in the future.
I haven’t been too familiar with these camps, so sorry for my naivete.
From what I have seen from following, the summer development camp is about introducing the players to the organization, fitness testing, teaching systems, nutrition education, and scouting, etc. For the free agent invites, it’s a chance to gain experience in those areas, plus an opportunity to earn a contract whether at the NHL or minor league level. Tim Leone (see links above) and in the past Mike Vogel have written some articles about development camp and the opportunity for players.
Also, note, NCAA prospects with eligibility remaining have very strict rules about what they have to pay for so not all the NCAA prospects choose to attend the development camp some years.
Typically, the Hershey (AHL) and ECHL (SC if the affiliation is renewed) coaches participate as well as the Capitals coaching staff.
The last couple of years the Capitals organization has had a guest coach at the summer development camp. Last year it was the head coach from Univ of Alaska Anchorage.
The Fall camps as Emily noted are the ones where different organizations prospects face each other if an organization chooses to participate in a scrimmage. There’s a west coast prospect tourney involving around 4 teams and the Traverse City prospects tournament involving a number of teams but as Emily noted, the Caps have been playing the Flyers and alternating hosting the scrimmage the last few years.
I will update the main post when the schedule is released and add some more notes at the same time.
Before anyone asks, I haven’t listed the Caps prospects attending, but will note that includes Tyler Stefishen, the prospect acquired via a trade with Nashville this off-season.
Stefishen just played his overage CHL season in the WHL.
Also, Frazee, listed above just complete his overage CHL season in the WHL.
From a quick look at the NCAA FA invites, all have NCA eligibility remaining.
Did Collins play with Da Costa? His numbers look pretty decent. Is that him or being carried by the stud on the team?
Obviously, this is all speculation.
From the little bit of reading/research I had done, he played with Jesse Todd and DaCosta in the second half of the season after playing on an all-freshman line the first portion of the season. The Merrimack writer’s blog is a good resource (the twitter account where I found the info. originally about the 2 Merrimack players attending the camp;) I will track down the link.
Saw the Stingrays (ECHL) qualifying list and wondering if Sean Dolan might attend camp as a FA invite…attended a few years ago, played for Stingrays after he finished his NCAA season, etc.
No news on the affiliation with SC continuing, but I think last year it wasn’t announced until some time in August.
One more FA invite, continuing a trend of having MSU players at Caps development camp…according to Puckato (Shane Frederick), Chase Grant will be at camp.
Chase Grant hockeydb bio, 21yo forward, just completed his freshman season,
I’m hoping I can make Wednesday’s afternoon scrimmage, and either another day or just Thursday morning. Some stuff has come up at work, unfortunately.

Per request, I created a Washington Capitals Development Camp twitter list for prospect twitter accounts. I didn’t include accounts if the player doesn’t tweet. Some of these accounts are confirmed to be the player, a few are not confirmed.

Nice work, as always.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
There’s a post on the USCHO forums indicating 2 or 3 NMU players may attend camp as invitees. Not sure how accurate the information is since other information in the post is hit or miss and a quick search didn’t provide any confirmation, wait and see, but the 3 mentioned are:
Andrew Cherniwchan, F, attended Caps camp last summer
Wade Epp, D
Kyle Follmer, D, attended Chicago camp last summer
Late Sunday update, adding 5 more FA invites, not including any of the 3 NMU players
another WHL/Seattle player, Mitch Elliot
another BC player, Pat Mullane (as noted above)
Scott Wietecha, D, NCAA-Ferris State (then ECHL Elmira for a few games after his senior season)
and RITsports: #RIT senior Cameron Burt and sophomore Adam Mitchell to attend Washington Capitals prospect camp this week. capitals.nhl.com #RITNews.
(note: Burt attended last summer and Mitchell is a local prospect) link to some info. about Mitchell training with Laughlin
Looked it up, last year there were 46 prospects skating during development camp, 23 plus 23 FA invites.’
As of now 20 Caps prospects plus 16 FA invites (plus maybe some of the NMU players)…i assume there will be a few more id’d today at camp.
A few more accounts added to the twitter list as well; know of a few other accounts that are locked or inactive, but if that changes they will be added, too.
Also, Thomas Frazee tweeted he will wear #95 this week.
Day 1
Here is a list of players I saw Day 1:
Group A: Carrier, Eakin, Grubauer, Haar, Koudys, Kugryshev, G. Mitchell, Soberg, Stefishen, Wey, M. Collins, Henley, Mullane, Civitarese, Frezee, Oligny, Eibler, Epp, Grant, Lockhart, and Cherniwchan
Group B: Anderson, Boyd, Burke, Flemming, Galiev, Herbert, Orlov, Sjogren, Wietecha, Follmer, Monpetit, Stollery, Allen, Syner, Tabisz, Boivin, A. Mitchell, Ross, Paquette, Burt, Edmonson, Schmit, Elliot, and Gervais-Chouinard
The only one I didn’t see was Stevenson.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
Stevenson was in Group A; left the ice early…bloody nose from what I saw.
I will post color combos later for Group A, some for Group B and update the table with the rest of the FA invites. Had 16 plus the 3 NMU guys id’d before camp started, but a few more to add.
Of note, 3 FA invites returned after a previous camp; Burt/ Cherniwchan ’10 & Edmondson ’09; also, Burt & Chreniwchan assigned to their respective “top” lines for day 1 line drills.
Greg Burke wore a yellow jersey in group B. I assume related to an injury/rehab maybe no contact since he finished his season UNH injured.
Yeah, I was wondering about Burke, but he played with more contact than I would have expected if he is injured.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
As I noted, I had to leave before the session ended so thanks for that information…did he stay in a yellow jersey the entire time? It wouldn’t be the first time, the Caps have had a player participate in drills/skating but keep the player out of the scrimmages for precautionary reasons if that is what happens, but as of now, just speculation on my part. Curious if anyone reported anything?
Yes, he was in yellow for the full workout.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
Today Burke was in a green sweater.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
Group A Day 1 Lines: (note position not definite)
F:
Burgundy: Cherniwchan (86) Eakin (50) Kugryshev (93)
Green: Stefishen (96) Mullane (64) Henley (87)
Grey: Grant (92) Lockhart (73) G Mitchell (76)
White: M. Collins (77) Civitarese (79) Frazee (95)
8D: Carrier (65), Eibler (51), Epp (67), Haar (38), Koudys (44), Oligny (94), Stevenson (66), Wey (56)
2G: Grubauer (31) and Soberg (40)
As has been the case the last couple of development camps, there was a guest coach on the ice with the coaches with Group A. Looked familiar but I have no idea why. Waiting to see if anyone know who it is.
Links to info. for the FA invites not listed before plus the 3 NMU players who were in fact in attendance.
Conor Allen, D, NCAA-UMass-Amherst, hockeydb, link to team player profile
Luke Eibler D, NCAA-Northeastern Univ. hockeydb, link to team player profile
Wade Epp, D, NCAA- Northern Michigan, hockeydb, link to team player profile
Kyle Follmer, D, NCAA-Northern Michigan, hockeydb, link to team player profile
Nick Tabisz, D, hockeydb, played 3 games for SC Stingrays last season after winning Div III championship with St. Norbert
Andrew Cherniwchan, F, NCAA- Northern Michigan, hockeydb, link to team player profile
David Civitarese, F, NCAA- Colorado College, hockeydb, link to team player profile
Reid Edmondson F, CHL-Laredo, hockeydb, camp in ’09

Garret Ross, LW, OHL-Saginaw, hockeydb, link to team player profile
Aaron Schmit, RW, NCAA-Ferris State, hockeydb, link to team player profile
do the Caps have connections at some of these schools? Seems like there’s always a Northeastern kid, a Ferris State invite, the NMU crew.
an nice to see a d-3 guy :) even if St. Norbert regular kicked my school’s butt.

ha ha, thanks, feel like I’m talking to myself in here some times…definitely some connections with coaches and/or agents and/or also might be to do with Caps scouts in certain areas having some relationships, too, but I don’t know the specifics.
A lot of NCAA FA invites. You are correct about certain schools or players from certain USHL teams (in their past) attending. I’d add Colorado College, Minnesota State, too, just off top of my head and maybe one more Mass. school. Some players, although not many, will even attend 2 camps in the same summer or attend one camp one summer and the next year go to another organization’s camp.
I haven’t taken a detailed look, but I believe most of the NCAA players at this camp have eligibility remaining, although Tabisz and Wietecha are done with NCAA hockey. I know Stefishen and Frazee are looking to turn pro after playing overage seasons in the WHL.
Also, I didn’t see de Kastrozza today or on any roster, so maybe Leone was wrong about him attending and it was only training camp where he’d be participating and I read his write-up incorrectly?
How did the Caps get Stefishen? I completely lost track of that trade.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
David de Kastrozza wasn’t tabbed to attend because he will turn 25 in October and was deemed too old by the Caps for development camp participation, Boudreau said.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
How did Miskovic get invited to last year’s camp. He was 25 last year. Did the age limit change or what?
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
Not a big deal, but it’s funny, since Leone was the one who originally reported he’d be there. Anyway, Leone’s a very good reporter and glad he followed up on why he wasn’t, but the reason is a simple out for the organization to explain it, IMO.
As you point out, Miskovic (May ‘85) was there last year. I’m pretty sure Sean Collins attended dev. camp with a year more pro experience as de Kastrozza. I think he was there in ‘09 when he would have been (birthdate: Oct. ’83) a year older than de Kastrozza (Oct ’86) is now. There are some rules related to camps and participating in scrimmages against other org’s prospects, IIRC, but that doesn’t apply here; it might simply be they didn’t feel he needed it or wanted to use a slot on him.

Awww.
to all #caps fans, take care of my twin brother @Mitchy1_0 this week in DC. If he is like me he will be at 4-5 more summer camps. #rookie

He’s referring to Garrett Mitchell.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
A few more of my impressions:
Grubauer looked rusty compared to last year, but it was good to see him back on his feet.
Flemming looked consistent.
Orlov got some good body positioning during some of the drills and even brick-walled someone a la Ovie.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
Hey sk8 — just wanted to say thank you again for writing and constantly updating this fanshot. It’s hard work and I hope you know how much we appreciate it. I don’t get to watch any camp, so this is the closest I’m going to get. The press articles will focus on the top prospects but can’t cover everyone like you do. I definitely feel a lot more connected for having this source of info.

I rec’d this, but it really needed more than that. This is really awesome for those that can’t attend sk8, thank you very much.
