by Berube Doobie Doo on Apr 24, 2011 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Proud to say I never had doubts…although frankly I didn’t think the regular season was going to matter much outside of making the playoffs and avoiding the top couple seeds in the 1st round. It’s clear using it as an experiment at the time to get the team to buy in to a style more conducive to success in the playoffs was completely worth it. In the doing, they just happened to finish 1st in the East as well. Nice knowing we went 3-0 at home in this series too considering there is only 1 team we wouldn’t have home ice against, and they are dealing with the possibility of an epic collapse even worse than ours last year.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

by Davethecapsfan on Apr 24, 2011 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I never had doubts we’d make the playoffs. I remember constantly repeating the refrain that the regular season doesn’t matter. I DID have serious doubts about BB’s ability to adapt in the playoffs. I like what I see so far, and am seriously hoping he continues to prove me wrong.

Teams are re-seeded according to the same criteria as the opening round.Division winners are seeded 1-2-3 for as long as they survive and all other teams line up behind them according to point total. Higher-seeded teams have home-ice advantage.

Anyone else think Laich might have scored the first goal? Looks from the goal cam as if it wasn’t even crossing the goal line before Laich took a poke at the puck.

by Sjomin on Apr 24, 2011 9:40 AM EDT reply actions

I think it had already trickled across – it was just beneath Girardi.

Atta dinnin stick a who!

by Gould Old Days on Apr 24, 2011 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it’s Laich’s, if you look at it closely, the puck wasn’t visible until Laich poked it in. The whistle would have been blown and it would have been a no goal after review if the puck is not visible before the whistle.

What say you, hockey gods???

by RAGthaman on Apr 24, 2011 9:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t see how it could have been out. Girardi was in the net and the puck was tied up in his shin pads. Gotta be Green’s. After what he went through why are you trying to steal a goal from him?

by Rob Parker on Apr 24, 2011 9:55 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions   1 recs

This. Looking at the gif of it from yesterday, it was crossing the goal line when Girardi slid into it – and he slid right back into the net. All Laich did was poke it further back to where it was visible. It was all Green.

Matt Bradley: He has sensitive skin, no?

by timmyv38 on Apr 24, 2011 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Yup. I see it as under his right leg three inches up from the skate. That’s where the puck initially slides in under his leg, and that’s where Laich pokes it out from.

That part of his shin pad is already fully in the net when Laich whacks it.

Good morning all. What a great feeling to have on this day after advancing.

Honestly I’m still trying to figure out how they made it look so easy last night relative to the struggle of the rest of the series. I know it seemed they had a serious spring in the step and I know BB was talking about how they were keeping the game simple, but what else explains it? Were we that much better, did the Rangers come out flat? Better talent wins out? One thing it shows once again is the importance of getting that first goal, but it was fascinating and extremely enjoyable to see how much we totally dictated the flow of the game.

by Naptown CapsFan on Apr 24, 2011 9:43 AM EDT reply actions

It all stems from the play during the regular season, they’ve essentially been playing the same way all year. They didn’t have to adjust. Much credit to the coaching staff. Gabby should at least be in the conversation for Jack Adams.

What say you, hockey gods???

I thought of your great ‘patience’ write-up several times during the game. Early on when Hendricks was getting his helmet pushed off while up against the Rangers net, I expected an elbow to fly….when OV held Greenie back from the scrum after his goal…it was evident mulitple times.

I doubt if the Caps or the coaches read any of this stuff, but…some of your observations have been spot on throughout the season. I’ve watched hockey for 30 years, and have learned a bit from you the past few years.

Thanks, and Let’s Go Caps.

I thought for sure that Hendricks was fighting someone. There was an AWESOME exchange in the first period, I think, where Alzner put his hand on Fedotenko and Fed slapped it away getting in Alzner’s face a little. Alzner slowly skated away, and as he did 26 just as slowly took his place in front of Fedotenko and got nose to nose with him. The way they glide on skates made it look like such a seemless transition. Feds wanted no part of Hendricks.

.Wish I DVR’d the game cause I’ll prob never see it ever again unless Dima decides to find it and make a gif out of it.

I doubt if the Caps or the coaches read any of this stuff, but…

Part of the point I was trying to get across in that fanpost was just that the Caps coaches shouldn’t need to read some random essay on the internet to figure that stuff out — it’s a perfectly ordinary strategy Tortorella employed that they’ve seen many times before. I was frustrated halfway through game 4 when it seemed like they were surprised by it, but hearing that Arnott reamed the team out during Game 4 makes me think that maybe these young players needed to experience the Rangers’ strategy for a few periods before they were ready to absorb what the coaches were trying to tell them about it.

The bottom line is that Tortorella made one adjustment during the series: between games 2 and 3. The Caps made the proper adjustment to that adjustment during the second intermission of Game 4 (with the help of Arnott). And the Rangers didn’t change their strategy again after. So credit the Caps with making the right adjustments, at the right time, to win the series in 5. Whether that credit belongs mainly to the players or coaches is hard to say, but I’m happy to give Boudreau credit because at the end of the day, it’s a 5-game series win.

Ed F. Is always a good read but of particular interest in this post is how he talks about Backstrom, given the recent debates. He said Nick was a beast of a 2 way forward all series. I agree for the VC games but that’s maybe a bit much for the MSG games. Either way, if a guy like Ed thinks Nick was great then we need to re-think any talk about him being a huge disappointment this series.

Second Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap)

by Rob Parker on Apr 24, 2011 10:07 AM EDT reply actions

What really caught my eye was this:

In fact, in the history of the franchise, this might be the best group of centers that the Caps have ever had in Backstrom, Jason Arnott, rookie Marcus Johansson, and Boyd Gordon. Perhaps an argument could be made for the 1991-92 quartet of Michal Pivonka, Mike Ridley, Dale Hunter, and Dave Tippett, but nonetheless, this team is dominant because they are so solid up the middle now since the acquisition of #44 to go along with MJ90’s continual improvement.

The lack of strength down the middle (along with shaky defensive depth) was the biggest thing separating the Caps from the other elite teams in the East the last couple of years. With the way Johansson stepped up this series, along with the acquisition of Arnott, Hannon, and Wideman, that gap has closed considerably.

Should also be noted that Cody Eakin has been beasting it up in the WHL Eastern Conference championship. He had the OT gamewinner on Friday, and last night he had the gamewinning goal four minutes into the first period and then assists on the other two goals in a 3-0 spanking of Medicine Hat. He victimised top-scoring top draft prospect Linden Vey all three times. All at even strength.

Imma thinking the Caps try for another one year deal with Boyd Gordon (though Boyd is having a nice resume-building post season and could probably get better term or money from another club), and start Cody in Hershey but get him some time up in DC to learn from the NHL pros.

No one on the Caps was a disappointment in the series. They all played within their game, made the plays and won four of five. Sure there were some close, tough games, but at the same time, there are always going to be those. Playoff blowouts are rare (yesterday’s Tampa/Pitt game being an exception). Yesterday was the closest to a blow out the Caps were going to get against the Rangers.

Of the remaining teams in the Eastern playoffs, most will play the Caps tough…although from what I can see in the East, if the Caps play as they did against the Rangers, they will move through the conference.

I was at the Pitt game in Dec prior to the WC. My kids were looking at stuff at a merchandise booth on the upper level. There was no one else shopping at the time so I started talking to the clerk. Turns out he was a fairly high up manager in marketing/sales who was filling in because there were a lot of employees out sick. He claims he knew Flash pretty well and said Flash badly wanted to re-sign with the Caps in the off season and had not sold his house. Given BB’s affinity for him, I would not be surprised to see this happen.

I’m not sure there would be a good position for him. He was doing so well with the Avs, and we’re pretty stocked on forwards. The only way I see that he has a role to play is if he replaces Bradley, but Flash is LW and Brads is a RW. I haven’t seen Hendy on the RW so I’m not sure if that would work. And Flash certainly would require more money than Brads, and probably wouldn’t be happy on the 4th line. And we have Fehr for next season as well, so he couldn’t necessarily get himself on the 3rd line…

Of the eight goals the Rangers scored in this series, none could really be categorized as “soft.”

Well, reasonable minds can differ on that… I think NYR’s 2nd goal in game 3 was on Neuvy.

No, that was the sharp-angle PPG, which many also thought was soft. I was thinking of the shot from the point that Neuvy tried to catch with his body but mis-timed it, and the rebound popped right out to Prospal for an easy goal.

It was the one I was thinking of. I hadn’t thought of that at first, but it could definitely be called soft.

Matt Bradley: He has sensitive skin, no?

by timmyv38 on Apr 24, 2011 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Disagree completely. A soft goal is one that should have been a easy save—goalie has a clear view, he’s got nobody interfering with him, and the shot was nothing special and low-percentage. In that one, Neuvy’s got a guy screening him less than a foot from the crease, and the goal is scored on a blindside rebound shot that he had no chance to stop because the second Ranger came in unmolested behind him.

It was a bad rebound, but it wasn’t what I call a “soft” goal.

by Forsch31 on Apr 24, 2011 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with your definition, and that’s exactly why it is soft. He had a clear view of the first shot, he just mistimed his glove.

I’ve mentioned before that he should have simply played that into the corner with his blocker instead of trying to trap it with traffic in front of him and wondered why he attempted such a risky maneuver. This quote from Ed’s piece may explain why:

The 22 year old rookie looked composed in the cage in every contest and rarely gave up rebounds. #30 did a super job of covering the puck and getting faceoffs any time the Rangers started getting sustained pressure, something he said he was instructed to do.

"Yeah, that’s what the coaches told me, they want me to freeze puck every opportunity I have to freeze the puck, so I think I did a pretty good job today with it," said the young Czech goaltender, who won back to back Calder Cup titles with the Hershey Bears the last two seasons.

by HockeyGoalie29 on Apr 24, 2011 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I noticed that quote. So, maybe Neuvy could’ve fended off a goal here or there by not trying to dramatically ice the puck and show the opposition that we can’t be rattled? Am I the only one reminded of Captain Turner?

by Berube Doobie Doo on Apr 24, 2011 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Speaking of Christensen, I was watching the DVR this morning and saw at one point in the third period he backed up in Neuvy’s face. Before he could cause any damage, Neuvy and Hannon tag-teamed him into a big tumble face first into the ice. That’ll teach ’em.

At the very least, I thought Fehr played pretty well in the games he got in. Obviously when Knubs is able to go he’s back in the lineup, and it becomes murky as to what Fehr’s status will be in that scenario. He’s not really a 4th line player, so sitting Brads or Hendy instead only works out if you move Chimera down to the 4th line so Fehr stays in on the 3rd. I guess the other option would be to sit Sturm, but I think he’s been quietly playing responsible. Who knows when Knubs will be back though.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

by Davethecapsfan on Apr 24, 2011 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I totally agree about Fehr in this series. I hope he stays on the 3rd. I would like to see him with Sturm and Mackan when Knuble gets back.

I really don’t understand why Fehr gets healthy scratched so often instead of a 4th liner, like the first 3 games of this series. I think he deserves better than that.

Matt Bradley: He has sensitive skin, no?

by timmyv38 on Apr 24, 2011 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

The only conundrum there is that Chimmer has been producing playing on 3rd line. Granted, he’s also had misses like the chance yesterday but he’s been effective on the 3rd line. Him and Mojo’s speed is just devastating for a lot of the D pairings they would be drawing on that line. All in all, it’s a good problem to have. You never know who’s going to get banged up going forward too.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

by Davethecapsfan on Apr 24, 2011 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree with everything you said, but I’d still like to see Fehr on the third and Chimera on the 4th. His speed and size can still be effective there.

by Ginga on Apr 24, 2011 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think it’s an option. Based on pure play I’d say Fehr has made more of an impact in his role than Brads or Hendy have in theirs. And I agree Chimmer’s skillset translates to the 4th line just as well. Good problem to have :)

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

Chimmer has to play with someone who can (1) keep up with him and (2) take advantage of scoring chances created by his speed. This is much more likely to happen on the third line. I actually don’t think his skill set translates as well to the fourth line.

by Karl W on Apr 24, 2011 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

When compared to someone like Fehr, I think his skillset is better on the 4th line. Just discussing who is odd man out when Knuble is ready to return.

I could see playing Fehr over Brads or Hendy, but he’s not a direct replacement for either of them…so it would probably result in some shuffling. I thought Fehr looked pretty good in last 2 games.

From a standpoint of…should they be good goals, yeah, I think the replays make that clear. From a consistency standpoint, we’ve certainly seen refs whistle plays dead with the puck already squirted out 5 feet away from the goaltender. He never had either puck frozen, you could always see it moving and clear of his body, but without the ref in good position to see that, those plays probably get whistled dead before the hard work dirty goals.

I dont think that series was, “easy” as you put it. Last year when we were up 3-1 on Montreal we felt like it was just done, and we could mail in the 4th victory. This year, we had complete respect for the Rangers. I think the whole building felt that if we lost game 5, we could expect to be back for game 7 when it’s anyone games.

What really struck me as the difference, was the depth. The Rangers just got slower as the games went on, and as the series went on. (except 2nd period of game 4) Lundqvist was very good, but if you watch Halak in games 5,6,7 last year, you would see that Lundqvist didnt have the games, or the saves needed to steal games. Take Semin and Ovie’s goal yesterday. Halak snatched those up all day last year when it counted.

by SA-Town on Apr 24, 2011 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

You guys didn’t have Arnott’s leadership last year vs the Habs. Lots of things factor into that. We were also missing Ryan Callahan…and yes, it did make a difference.

on Ovie’s goal last night, was a sick move. Please don’t ever doubt Lundqvist. He is the main reason we even made it into the playoffs. Look at the injuries we’ve had, and the rookies filling in this year. Yes, no excuses.

Two totally different teams (this year’s caps, vs last years) And you got a ton of bounces this year…not to mention help from the ref (skating into Dubinsky on the breakaway). Should we have put you away leading 3-0 going into the 3rd in game 4? hell yes I do. but beep happens.

Lundqvist is still an all world goalie (can’t believe he was a 7th round pick) 11 SO this year, and 6 straight 30+ win seasons

Lundqvist was fantastic throughout this series, and is undoubtedly among the best goalies in the NHL. Not many goalies can carry a team the way that he does. He definitely kept you guys in every single game. I don’t think any goalie would have gotten either Ovie’s or Semin’s goal last night – they were both incredible plays.

For Lundy to not be a finalist for the Vezina is just criminal in my mind. No question. You don’t make the playoffs without him being as great as he was.

It was a good series, that was certainly closer than the 4-1 scoreline might read at times. Missing Callahan hurt you guys a lot. 2 games out of 5 that we controlled pretty well (Games 2 and 5)…and 3 one goal games that we had 2 go in our favor in OT’s. You guys had some good bounces as well with 2 goals deflecting in off our own guys past Neuvirth. It all evens out. Our PP actually converting a few times compared to yours was also a factor in a couple games.

If you guys can get another talented scorer or center to play with Gaborik (maybe Richards?) and a little more depth on your blueline (Staal and Girardi are damn fine anchors as your top pairing), maybe Lundy will have a team in front of him that he can push deep in the playoffs in coming years.

Bad idea by Rangers management. Tortorella is the type of coach in sports that needs to be moved on after a few years when the players stop responding to threats and yelling. Billy Martin was the classic prototype, but Mike Keenan fits into the same mold, ditto for Ken Hitchcock. When these coaches come in, they get the players to buy in through threats and intimidation. Eventually though, the threats are ignored and players end up doing what they want. There is a reason each of these coaches get fired over and over again and Tortorella will not be an exception. Within 2 years he’ll be run out of New York and on to another NHL city.

Tortorella is certainly a brash guy, but I don’t think it is fair to lump him in with Keenan or Hitchcock in terms of wearing out his welcome. His only previous coaching stint was 7 years long with Tampa Bay. And he got fired more because the team sucked after Feaster fucked their salary cap, not because the team tuned him out. Now after three years with the Rangers he is still getting the most out of a not so talented team, and I don’t see any signs that the team is about to quit on him.

The Rags have to decide to extend him for a few years or just let him go and find a new coach, and I think extending him was easily the right move. Just because you are a gruff guy who demands a lot from your players doesn’t mean you can’t stick around for a while. Torts is holds players accountable, but he is fair with them and rarely throws them under the bus to the press. I’ve never gotten the sense that the TB or NYR players were anything but loyal to him.

I did have choice things to say about BB in Dec/Jan/Feb and still question his ability to lead this team to the SCF. I will be ecstatic to be wrong.

Of course, we now have Jason Arnott who is responsible for all things good (when Sasha scored yesterday, I turned to my friend and said “Arnott is awesome.”), and fixes all things bad about the Capitals so if and when they end up in the SCF, it will really be all on him – BB will just have been along for the ride.

Varly, Varly...errrrrr.....NEU-VY, NEU-VY! Pp

by alisterio on Apr 24, 2011 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it’s a gross overstatement to say that BB would be just along for the ride. While Arnott may have helped the team fix some issues in confidence and experience…the team was buying in and had improved defensive numbers well before we acquired him. The combination of implementing that change when they did and balancing out the lineup with Arnott and Sturm has seemed to bring all the pieces together. BB can certainly handle some things better and probably change some things to even more maximize our lineup’s potential, but I seriously disagree to say he’s just been a passenger.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

by Davethecapsfan on Apr 24, 2011 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I think alisterio was just exagerating for effect. But really, I just don’t buy into the Arnott-as-leader-of-the-free world line of thinking. If Arnott was such a great leader, he would have led the Devils out of last place. The guy is a journeyman veteran who has a reputation for arrogance. Most of the “Arnott as leader” stories have come directly from Arnott.

The guy has been clutch on the ice, I’ll give him that, but I don’t buy any of the stories about him leading the team to the playoffs, bla bla. I also can’t imagine the current coaching staff enjoys hearing about Arnott came in and fixed al the things they didn’t notice/couldn’t correct.

by Karl W on Apr 24, 2011 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

As always, the answer is probably somewhere in the middle. If Arnott is arrogant but his experience and vocal leadership are giving the rest of the team the right kind of swagger, I’m all for it. I think BB has shown this year a willingness to change his ways in a couple of areas. It might not be what most of us think is optimal yet, or maybe ever will be this year…but the evidence has been there a little bit.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

by Davethecapsfan on Apr 24, 2011 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I also think a bit of both.

I consider Arnott the final piece, the veteran who offers a fresh and frank voice to the locker room. In Ovi’s on ice post game interview when he was asked about who spoke up after period two of game four Ovi specifically mentioned Arnott.

But the changes to the system and the overall reconfiguring of the team’s identity is due to Boudreau. It’s kind of fitting that it was the the Rangers’ shellacking of the Caps so badly back in early December that led directly to this current incarnation of the Caps.

‘when Sasha scored yesterday, I turned to my friend and said "Arnott is awesome." ’
, which is just absurd — esp. given the play in question.
Some have an especially hard time giving credit where it’s due to BB’s coaching, Semin’s production/efficiency, or AO’s leadership. For these people, Arnott truly is a godsend.

It was such a change from Game 5 last year with the chance to close out the Habs. We out shot them something like 17-6 in the 1st, and they probably didn’t have a real quality scoring chance other than a little scrum around the net on the first shift. Total control. Capitalizing on the PP to get the lead (and the first 1st period goal in the series) just set the tone. It was damn loud for all the goals too :)

The Caps played a great complete game. It was a lot of fun to attend. No complaints except for the board flashing up a graphic for “CAN YOU HEAR US?” In the third. Lame city. Very cool the crowd got the organic cheers going. It’s nice to not have any complaints about the on-ice product though.
I was expecting a flat first where Neuvy would keep them in the game. The 2nd&3rd would be a stressful comeback where the Caps eventually took the lead and then won in regulation.

Before the game video was over I could see Neuvy when the players entrance door would open for a few seconds. He was radiating with how pumped up he was, jumping up and down. I was thinking he’d be playing like a man possessed and was glad to see he didn’t disappoint.

The Rangers plan to just get the puck behind the net and then blindly throw it in front was so boring, stale and predictable. I didn’t watch any of their games that weren’t against the Caps this season but if that was their normal method of “generating” offense then they had a coaching problem. They would have been much better off throwing it to the point for a quick shot. That play was open a lot too since the Caps knew that they were going to go behind the net and throw the puck in front almost every time they entered the zone. I haven’t analyzed that in depth at all – just my impression while watching the games.

He actually does it pretty well when he actually uses it. Aside from the one time he was forced to go to his backhand against Fleury in a game earlier this year when that was his only option on a semi-breakaway due to back pressure, I don’t think I’ve seen him not score with it when he executes it well. Semin has probably the best forehand to backhand in the league when he’s Good Sasha, but Ovie should look to throw it in more as much as he usually likes to go top shelf on the forehand side.

Crazy stat from the Peerless recap...

207 total blocked shots combined by the teams in the series. Caps with 104, Rags with 103. He says that’s 1 and 2 in the playoffs so far. 2 great defensive teams battling it out.

Struggling a bit with the man crush this morning, especially after watching the replay this morning. Too many options.

74 – carry over from last year and has done nothing to lose his status
90 – the future is already here with this kid. I salivate at the prospect of him and Ovie on a 2 on 1.
23 – don’t under estimate the value he has added to this team. IMO, best pick up of the year
30 – wiser and calmer than his years
27 – the beard is reason enough. only Shea Weber can look down on him, perhaps.
25 – I have more hair than him (not often I say that), and I envy his speed and effort

If I had to choose right now – 90 by a smidge over 23.

It was mostly snark…not hating on Chimmer. Hell the guy had 2 GWG in the series, and created a lot of possession and offense with his speed. The Stone Hands thing is a little overdone, but we definitely missed some open chances in this series to make the games not as close as they were, and he doesn’t have a scorer’s hands. Does his job damn well though. Just thought Mackan deserved to get a helper on that play, insane move to get the pass around the sliding D man.

A 5 -2 win would have been a nice bonus. But I mean, 25 scores arguably the defining goal of the series by being what he is, and we’re calling him out for an assist he didn’t get Johansson…

Haha, not at all, Chimmer had a great series. I just don’t like leaving any goals on the ice. I feel like our 3rd line could be a major strength going forward in the playoffs with the production we could get out of it.

Don't get too attached to Hannan...

He’s likely the odd-man out this offseason. He’s UFA after the season ends, and there’s really no room for him with Green, Carlson, Schultz, Wideman, Poti and Erskine signed and Alzner as an RFA….

Yeah, with Knubs back, and the possibility of bringing Arnott back on a similar deal as Knubs (Perhaps, just speculation), the only way I could see us affording Hannan is if he takes a big pay cut or we move Poti or Wideman. I don’t think Poti could be moved, but Wideman is very movable.

Yup Hannan before Arnott for me as well. I believe he has played a huge role in the growth of Carlson and Alzner’s rapid development. I realize of course it all boils down to cap room and a player’s needs. But I’m hopeful.

I’ve actually never doubted Semin would be focused and play his hardest in the playoffs/WCs/Olympics (a contrast from the regular season streaky Semin). In my mind more worrisome is what happens when the bounces don’t go Semin’s way. Hopefully we don’t get to see what happens in that case, but I hope Arnott’s influence and/or more maturity from Semin lead him to keep plugging away and not get drawn into taking frustration penalties or start shooting from everywhere.

I think we’re past small sample size at this point. By my count he has 9G 8A and is a +14 since Arnott’s arrival…AND hasn’t gone more than 2 games without a point. 22 games is a pretty good stretch for Semin to not be typical streaky Sasha.

What about the start to 08-09? IIRC Semin led the NHL in points per game until January.

Doesn’t change the fact that 22 games works out to be over a 25% of the season…not a small sample size. Granted five of those games are playoffs and a few of them arnott wasn’t playing.

In direct response to the 08-09 season…if Semin puts up those numbers every year (he was hurt for a bit) I don’t think we’re having good Sasha bad Sasha discussions.

by Yoshietree on Apr 24, 2011 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m pretty sure semin looked like he’d turned the corner then, too. Maybe the sample indicates a significant trend but it’s hardly decisive…plenty of players can play well for a quarter of a season. Wolski, Semin, Fleischmann, Fehr, Ericsson, Schultz, Zherdev, Brassard, etc, all made supporters think they’d turned the corner with a similarly small sample, or an even larger one, when they hadn’t, or regressed right away thereafter.

Sometimes you just have to ride the Sasha ride. But at the very least Arnott is an experienced playmaking center who can provide more opportunities for Sasha to shine. Having Arnott trying so hard to connect with Sasha and “teach” is only icing on the cake IMO.

Agreed, I just think dollars and term come into play. I feel like both would get less than their current money, but that Hannan will want more term and maybe dollars than Arnott.

I would 100% want Hannan back if possible.

Playoff beards

So CapsNewsNetwork tweeted:

RT @cnichols14: #Caps Playoff Beards Continue to Grow….#Photos Updated from Game 5 #WasNYR- http://bit.ly/hqbwHh

However, they forgot to include Sasha. He appears to be trying to grow a beard and mustache. Look closely at the upper lip, as well as the chin.

Can it be? Three hits in the game yesterday and he took down Dubi? Got a roughing penalty, but no stick penalty?

Speaking of Dubi, remember this from 24/7:

Dubinsky to Ovi: “You need to get that beard back baby.”
Ovi to Dubi: “Yeah, you’re gonna see it soon.”

You bet! And now Dubi can shave that horrific stache of his.

Are you not entertained?

Stat Nerd Sunday from Puck Daddy, trying to develop a simple metric to rate single-game goalie performances.

A lot of the point assignments seem sort of arbitrary to me, but my biggest qualm is by including the end result of the game (win/loss). Remind me how a goalie scores goals for his team, again?

I think there is something to be said for the idea that it is easier for goalies to play in blowouts as opposed to in a tight game – 1GA in a 2-1 win or even a 1-0 loss is more impressive than 1GA in a 7-1 win, all else equal. But the point system for the final score certainly seems to be arbitrary.

Interesting idea, but it could be improved.
