I hope it’s loud as hell at MSG tonight. I think our boys respond well to the intensity. We did well in our playoff games in Montreal last year…showed up well vs the big Pens crowds, and in the Winter Classic. Bring the noise…
How’d that work out for us last game?

From WaPo (Hamilton):
And it now makes Game 4 a crucial one — perhaps even a must-win game for the Capitals.
Is this the first “must win” game of the series? Aside from games one through three I mean.

Must-win or… the series will be even.
I mean, I could buy “must-win” for the Rangers – don’t want to be down 3-1 heading back to D.C. But even that is a bit of a stretch of the natural meaning of the words.

Didn’t we point out here a few days back that mathematically, there is no must-win until a team loses three games in a seven game series?
Doesn’t must-win mean that, if they lose tonight, their season is over.

Funny how perception is in the eye of the beholder. San Jose is 2-1 in their series and they’re feeling on top of the world. Pittsburgh is 2-1 and everything’s fine in the ’Burgh. Caps are 2-1 and Hamilton has us standing on the edge of a cliff.

As someone said on OTF yesterday (I think it was Billy Jaffe) — if the team is panicking, they’ve already lost the series. Fans will be panicking because that’s what fans do. The media will talk about a panic because they need a story. But there’s no reason the team should be panicking.

Had the same thought myself, and thought back to Ronnie Wilson during the Cup run. I think it was when they went up 3-1 on…Boston? Ottawa? He noted that it was better to lead than trail, and that you had to get to three wins before you can get to four.
Same thing here. Of the four possible outcomes so far (3 – 0, 2 – 1, 1 – 2, 0 – 3), there’s only one that’s better than this one.
It would be real nice to win this one. But it’s not yet crucial.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
I have always remembered that Wilson had a clipboard in the locker room with 17 sheets of paper, numbered 16 down to 0. After every win, he ripped the top sheet off. I always thought that was a great visual to have in the locker room.

Vague and likely incorrect recollection that is nonetheless amusing:
Wilson told the team, apropos of the 3-1 jinx, that they were going to “throw a bucket of water on the Wicked Witch.”
Zednik later confided in a reporter that Wilson planned on using magic to ensure they won.
I kinda miss Zed, now that I mention it.

Fun n’ games: Who would you take in a playoff series – 1998-1999 Caps or 2010-2011 Caps? I say Caps in six…
I think the Caps would definitely win that one. It wouldn’t even be close. They’d win every game played.

The 1998-99 Caps were awful. I think they lost over 450+ man-games to injury and missed the playoffs. I think you’re referring to the 1997-98 Stanley Cup finalist Caps though. On paper, I would take this year’s Caps in a heartbeat over the 97-98 Caps. However, that 97-98 team was gutsy, always found ways to win and were really lucky. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.
Formerly "topshelf_22304"
The "Other" Box Seats Blogger
the ‘97-98 team was veteran-laden team and not just older guys, but skilled older guys. I’m just guessing, but I’d say the average age was close to if not more than 30 years. That’s one thing this team doesn’t have in abundance.
If I recall correctly, the ’97-98 Caps were the “oldest” team in the playoffs that year. I remember opponents kept focusing on wearing the Caps down because of their age, especially the defense, which was really a four-man rotation of CalleJo, Mark Tinordi, Joe Reekie and Sergei Gonchar. Of that group only Gonchar was under 30. The first line was all over 30 as well: Oates, Juneau and Bellows. That Caps team was very efficient and well coached. Crazy Ron pressed the right buttons that spring.
And did I mention that they were lucky. :)

Sorry, not meaning to deny the accuracy of the clipboard thing. It could well be true, and it sounds like something Wilson would have done. He was good at little motivational ploys like that.

Fairly certain it was true because I remember seeing a photo of the clipboard. The concept is great because the focus is solely on winning the next game and not the series.
There’s an NHL All-Access DVD that has a mini feature on Wilson from that time – and it shows a clip of Juneau pulling a #5 off a clipboard after he got the GWG that sent the Caps to the Finals.
In other words, Spidey, you’re 100% correct. Wilson had a clipboard and the guy who got the game-winner got to pull off the next number.

There was a game once, I thought during the playoffs, when the Kings were the ones behind and came back for the win, but now I can’t find the info. I can only find one from the regular season. Anyone recall the playoff game like that?
Oh and glad I didn’t stay up to watch although it sounds like quite a game if one did not have a vested interest in either team.
DET had a 3 goal lead with 5 minutes to go. Andy Murray pulled the goalie with 5 minutes left, tied the game (after tricking Bowman into wasting his timeout, a feat that Andy Murray later recalled as one of his greatest hockey moments), and won in OT.

And for a team with a commanding lead in the series, Vancouver sure did lose their composure at the end of that game.
Still can’t figure out why they left Luongo in until he gave up the 6th goal early in the 3rd period. Looked like he tweeked something at the end of the first period, not to mention he has a history of getting frazzled in the playoffs (especially by Chicago). Why risk it?

Here’s what kills me – after Vancouver went up 3-0 I saw lots of people saying “oh, if only the Caps could have such killer instinct” and “Vancouver’s going to sweep, wow, what a message they’re sending…anyone want to revise their Cup-winner picks?”
Saw variations of these comments here, in the media and on Twitter. And then Vancouver goes out and lays an egg.
Yeah, Chicago was desperate, and yeah, they don’t want to get swept…but they didn’t want to go down 3-0, either, and they did. Not saying Vancouver loses this series (and if they do I’d never stop laughing) but it’s a stark reminder that anything can happen in the playoffs – and that it’s not only the Caps that take their foot off the pedal at times.
Consider that the Caps played a stinker of a game when they could have gone up 3-0 in a series…but only lost by one, thanks to a fluky goal in the last two minutes. The Canucks got lit up by the Hawks, a team that is a shadow of their former Cup-winning self.
…just saying. Perspective.

Exactly. And yeah, the Hawks are probably a better team than the Rangers – but the Canucks are a better team than we are, and I think the gap between 1 and 8 in the West was much bigger than the one in the East. To let themselves get run over like that…desperate Chicago team or not, that was not the statement game the Canucks needed.
Sunrise, sunset, swiftly fly the years. One season following another, laden with happiness and tears.
Nicely said…and true. Like I said, SJ is up 2-1 in their series and they’re on top of the world. Caps up 2-1 and they’re on the brink of collapse.

Caps had all kind of momentum going into NY and played their worst game of the series. LA had just shut out SJ and was playing at home and blew a four goal lead. Vancouver was rolling after beating Chicago in game three and got drilled in game four. Montreal was as high as a kite after winning two in Boston and laid an egg at home. Do I need to go on? There’s little to no momentum from game to game. Torts is just saying that to rally his team.

Do I need to go on?
Do I need to cite every team that won 2 in a row? Or 3 in a row, or 4?
I certainly agree that Torts was trying to pump up his team. Saying that momentum is “the most important thing in a series” is ridiculous. But it’s also possible for a team to get on a roll that extends across games.

Yes, but the point is (I think) that “momentum” is only an after-the-fact explanation. If it has no predictive value (and I have yet to see evidence that it does) then it’s probably an illusion.

if the caps lost 7-2 in Game 4, where they were up 3-0, every hockey media outlet would have penned 3-5 articles on how this is the harbinger of the Caps impending implosion and how the Caps are chokers and how the Caps don’t have what it takes to win…..
it’s all very quiet about Vancouver today. And it’s not like they have a whole lot of glorious playoff history to fall back on.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
Unfortunately the Caps are guilty until proven innocent because of all the blown 2-0 series leads. If they win tonight I think most will breathe a lot easier.
Oh, I agree. Just find it funny, that’s all – the Canucks were doing what we should have done and they choked when it really came time to put the Hawks away. The Caps barely lost the first road game in a series in which I think they’d be happy taking one of two in MSG.

OK, there’s no doubt that the definition of “must win” is win or go home.
But I really do think that this is the game where history will be buried or history will be repeated. Tonight they need to monkeystomp the Rangers and prove to everyone that this time around they are serious contenders.
But in terms of a literal must win? Obviously not, because if the Caps lose, they still live to play another day Game 7.
We’ve got too many heroes. We need some monsters.
- The Jade Donkey
I’ll grant you a psychological “must-win,” if you truly believe that a loss tonight means they will lose the series. You are allowed to have that opinion.
I think a loss tonight makes is best 2 out of 3, with the Caps having the critical game 5 in front of their fans and, if needed, a game 7 in the same location.

Well, I guess it depends on whether you agree with Ted as to whether this season is “Stanley Cup or Bust” or not.

I just don’t buy in to the must-win psyche or desperation. Teams go out to win every single night. They play better or worse, but they don’t do that intentionally.
I think teams, like the Canucks last night, tend to give up when they’re down and know a loss isn’t elimination, but I think the Canucks had every intention of winning last night. I disagree with anyone who says they lost so that they could win game 5 at home. That’s absurd.
If players, the Caps or any other, needs to face elimination or think it’s a must-win in order to play well/harder, then I don’t want those players on my team.
It has nothing to do with Stanley Cup or bust. Every team in every league in every year is championship or bust, IMO.

I agree with your points, especially on the Canucks.
But I have no influence over what the players think or do. They, however, have a huge influence over what I think and do. And so I need them to show me tonight that they are an elite team prepared to crush an 8 seed on their way to a deep playoff run, and not the same team that has crushed my dreams lo these many, many years.

A bigger deal, perhaps, is that Versus is currently on the “sports tier” on Cox in Fairfax. It’s not much, but it is an extra $2 per month (I think; all I really know is I pay a fortune for cable, like an idiot). NBC should be able to get that moved to basic service along side ESPN.
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
Same with DIRECTV. Not on the basic package, but I think it costs me like $5.00 a month for the sports package. I think if NBC is serious about rebranding Versus they should really spend the dough to get it moved to be included with basic service.

Wasn’t the location of Versus part of the whole Comcast/DirecTV battle two years ago? Hopefully with an NBC branding, it can be brought to basic cable.

Whatever they agreed on to get the deal done you still have to buy the sports package to get Versus on DirecTV.

Of course, I’d still spend the $2 if they get the channel moved. NHL Network is also on that tier, along with some other stuff I’d want to keep. Funny that I originally got the tier for the soccer channel(s) for my son, but kept them for the hockey.

From the Washington Times’ article about taxing the income of nonresident athletes:
The D.C. Home Rule Actof 1973 prohibits the city from imposing a tax on nonresidents. Mr. Evans says there is a quick fix: By adopting his nonbinding "sense of the council" resolution, city lawmakers could ask D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton to introduce a bill that amends the nonresident section of the tax code to say "except for professional athletes."
I think this is just the DC Council wishfully thinking, but anyone who works downtown but lives in MD or VA should be concerned. If they can go after AO’s salary they can go after yours too. Why stop at pro athletes?
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Having paid NYC non-resident tax for many, many years while not living there, I have little sympathy for this issue. In down economic times, these are the things municipalities will do for a quick jolt of cash. And people who work in the city do make use of many city services that are paid for through taxes. Admittedly, how DC currently handles this, with not being able to set its own rules, is unknown to me. I’m surprised there isn’t already a non-resident tax.

DC houses less than 700,000 people. It has 3.4 million daily “interstate” commuters. The city is absolutely dependent on the sales and property taxes (from the buildings the commuters work in) generated by the presence of the commuters. Especially since the city has chosen to prioritize the nostalgia of nationally symbolic buildings as the priority criteria for new infrastructure. A few dozen really tall buildings is something DC could have used for about 40 years now.
close to 25% of the city is a “historical residential area” meaning people need to get an easement just to wall mount a TV. I LOVE DC, and as soon I as finished this damned Thesis I’ll move right back in, but the District’s approach to encouraging residency is completely facacta.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
This definitely seems like a non-starter. I just can’t see a future for a what I will now call the “Ovechkin Clause” that imposes a commuter tax on specific citizens or the general population. Most of the VA & MD congressional delegates and senators are fairly established in the committee structure of both houses and I don’t seem them lending support to a bill that reduces their own tax base in favor of an increase in DC revenue. And even if Eleanor “No Vote” Holmes Norton got it introduced, there’s no chance of it ever coming out of committee for a vote.

I’m also convinced that the district is intentionally trying to rack up money on parking tickets
I mean seriously. The meters in chinatown near VC go until 10 pm (JUST before the games let out) and have a 2 hour limit so if you get there at 7 for a game, there’s no way you can go back to feed the meter at 9. And they make the parking tickets ONLY $25 dollars (obscenely cheap) so that they’re JUUUUUUUST more expensive than parking in a lot, so people will be tempted to park there and pay the extra 5-10 dollars as sort of an (I don’t have to look around for parking in a lot) fee.
If I remember correctly, DC sold all the rights to all the profits to the city’s meters to an outside company for a lump sum because they needed the cash. This strategy with the meters near VC is brilliant if you ask me.
I’m talking about the old school coin meters off NY ave. I don’t know if there’s a 2 hour limit with the credit card meters off 7th street
Honestly? I didn’t realize the parking tickets were only $25. That’s sort of good business. Keeps the money for the city vs in the hands of the garage owners who probably only report 1/2 at best of the cash they collect.

Rolling the dice and you’ll probably lose. I’m sure the meter maids know the game. I’ve done it twice on NY ave and got parking tickets both times.
And yea. $25 bucks ain’t bad if you consider the parking lots and all the money you spend at the game. What’s an extra $5-$10 bucks to park right at 7th and NY?
Of course, both times I got the ticket I was lazy paying so within a month or so the price was doubled to $50.
IMO: It’s worth it if you’re not a lazy ticket-payer. Or if you already have three outstanding tickets. I think the rule in DC is what? 3 unpaid tickets and you get the boot if they find you?
I couldn’t tell from the article if they’re looking for an income tax exception or an entertainment tax like in Tennessee. In all honesty, there’s nothing wrong with the District looking to tax non-residents. It could help reduce the handout they need from the fed gov because of all the federal building they can’t get real estate tax from. And as it says, it would be no different from any state that can tax non-residents.

AO’s salary wouldn’t likely be subject to the tax anyway. D.C. has an agreement with Maryland and Virginia in which residents of D.C. who work in MD or VA are not subject to the out of state tax. MD and VA reciprocate. This is known as a border state agreement, and is quite common.

Don’t make this out to be something it’s not. Maryland has a Jock tax on the books and has for years.
From the state
A nonresident professional athlete or entertainer deriving income from performing services in this State has a sufficient nexus or connection with Maryland to require the filing of a nonresident return. Such individuals may also be subject to tax on the income earned in this State. Section 10-806 of the Tax-General Article requires a nonresident to file a return if the nonresident is required to file a federal return and has income or losses derived from a business, occupation, profession or trade carried on in this State.
In fact 20 of the 24 states with franchises in at least one of the four major leagues have laws that require visiting athletes to pay state income tax for each game they play there. This isn’t unique to DC or unique at all. Near every locality does this. Not saying it’s right but it’s the status quo.

As much as I enjoy throwing Larry Brooks under the bus at every opportunity….I’ll give credit where credit is due.
And though Alex Ovechkin has scored twice in three games, the Blueshirts have succeeded in limiting The Great 8 on the rush, though that might be a partial byproduct of the winger’s adherence to a conservative system in contrast to the old run-and-gun
I can’t think of another scribe outside of DC that’s thrown that caveat in.
I think Brooksy knows his hockey. He can be a little dramatic at times, but he’s not like Wise, Wilbon or Hamilton who parachute in during the playoffs, vomit out some cliches and then leave.

I like Larry Brooks. He does indeed know hockey and he’s not afraid to take on all-comers. And the fact that he doesn’t disguise his hate for Torts is the clincher.
I find Brooks uneven – often very, very good, but his clunkers… look out.

There’s a new coach in Washington after two years of regressing under Glen Hanlon, and the guess is there will be a new GM, too, by the end of the season if George McPhee’s team doesn’t show marked progress between now and the end of the year.
Amid all this uncertainty and performing in a backwater hockey room with talents designed for the big stage, why would Ovechkin commit now to remaining in Washington?

There are no hiding places on the internet. “Backwater hockey room”? By the way, anybody catch Kornheiser on PTI yesterday? They were talking about Boudreau’s MSG comments and Tony was blasting him and he said (not his exact quote) “We’re talking about an original six franchise. What does Washington know? They’ve had hockey for about 15 minutes.” Totally confirms everything I’ve ever thought about the guy.
What does Vancouver know? They’ve only had hockey for 40 years…which is only a few more than the Caps.
Kornheiser’s an ass.

The only other “famous” team was the Renfrew Creamery Kings who were nicknamed the “millionaires” because the owner bought the services of Frank and Lester Patrick as well as Fred “Cyclone” Taylor and, later, acquired Edouard “Newsy” Lalonde from Montreal.
Frank and Cyclone went on to play for the Vancouver Millionaires.

So, Downie and Kunitz suspensions. Advantage to one team or a push?
I think it’s a slight advantage to TBL, as Kunitz does more for the Pens than Downie does for TBL.
TBL’s defense sucks, by the way. Just putrid.

TB loses 2 things in Downie, their team psycho and he is decent offensively. I just think the Pens are so decimated it hurts them to lose anyone. I say adv. TB only because of who the Pens are already missing.

And yeah, their D is bad. That Asham goal the other night was hilarious. Mike Rupp walks Hedman at the blueline and then the pass across on the two on one slides under Kubina. I’ve never seen a D play a 2 on 1 pass so correctly and yet so poorly. Was he in some sort of London Bridge position? That Beauchemin acquisition was an important one for them – not in terms of actual play, but the fact that, in my opinion, he’s their #1 D-man.

I disagree with you on Sturm…or rather I agree with what Becca was saying yesterday. I think Sturm brings more to the table than Bradley or Hendricks and Hendricks brings more than Bradley at this point.
For how much I like Hendricks, I definitely think he has played his way into the scratch discussion to get Fehr into the line-up. Sturm stays in and it’s between Bradley and Hendricks, IMO. I thought it would be Chimera after game 1, but I think it’s either 10 or 26. Bradley had a good first game, but trying to recall much since then.

For what it’s worth my opinion throughout the year (and I know I’m not the only one) is that Hendricks has made Bradley expendable…or vice versa I suppose. Hendrick’s two penalties have frustrated me, but I still think he’s worth more in the lineup than Bradley is.

Not unheard of in the Calder Cup playoffs. If it goes to a Game 7, games 6/7 are back to backs, too.
The weirder part of the schedule was the gap between games 1 and 2.
not to mention they usually go 2-3-2 in terms of games, so 1, 2, 6, & 7 are at home for the higher seed, 3, 4, & 5 are away for the higher seed
LET'S GO CAPS!!!
No they don’t usually use the 2-3-2 format; it is based on the distance between the 2 teams whether they use 2-2-1-1-1 or 2-3-2.
Arena scheduling issues are an issue in AHL arenas, yes.
Giant Center does High School graduations, for example.
I don’t know why that always makes me smile.
Yes, but it’s too early for the graduation stuff to interfere; it definitely interferes when Hershey makes it to later rounds. The issue with special events like graduations and band competitions is that they don’t appear on the official/public event schedule. There was a show at GC last Friday night and most people think they had the center booked for breakdown on Saturday, as well.
Last year, the circus caused a 12-day delay in the start of the final round, so much so that the players all went home after beating Manchester in game 6.
Just checked GC schedule: Yup, Circus is back there May 25-30.
"I remembered when he said that and I kind of looked at him during the warm up and told myself that I got to shut these guys out tonight." - Michal Neuvirth, 02.06.11.
There was some type of issue in ’05-06 which resulted in the Bears hosting game 7 even though Portland was the higher seed, pretty sure it was the circus. Things happen with AHL scheduling a lot more than with NHL scheduling, although as Caps fans we know things happen at the NHL level, too, to mess up playoff scheduling.
The series was played 2 (Portland)- 2 (Hershey)- 2 (Portland)- 1 (Hershey)
Sure they do – game 4 and 5 against Pittsburgh in ’09 were back-to-back; BB played Varly in both, and by Game 7 Varly was showing the effects of fatigue. I still maintain that Theo should have gotten one of those starts. Caps lost both games anyway (5-3 in Pittsburgh, 4-3 in OT in DC).
Games 6 & 7 of the Philly series in ’08 were b2b also.

WBS won last night, but still trail Norfolk 2-1 in games and all of a sudden look like a team that can’t find the back of the net with a flashlight and a map. Three goals in three games. I saw them on Saturday, and they looked aboslutely discombobulated in the offensive end and inept at breaking out of their own end. They might have the best record in the league, but they didn’t look like the best team in the division. Norfolk skated rings around them.

It doesn’t help that they have so many players injured or called up. TB called up 2 players (Ritola and Blair Jones), which meant last night both teams were limited offensively.)

Back to the Bears, Charlotte is expected to play Justin Faulk, recently signed dman who just finished freshman season (and NCAA champ. winner) with UMD.
So both teams will be playing 19yo dmen tonight, Orlov for Hershey, Faulk for Charlotte, although Faulk is almost a year younger, having just turned 19.
Yeah, it was so bad, even my BlackBerry died in the third period.
As for the Bears, they seem to be part of a larger “parity” trend. Of 16 series in the NHL and AHL, only one has been a sweep (Houston in the AHL), and only one can be a sweep in the NHL (Detroit with a 3-0 lead over Phoenix).

Colin should put the email down. BB’s comments were not directed a Campbell per se, I think they were directed at the refs and the ref’s supervisors. I don’t think he expected any suplemental discipline, just wants the refs to keep an eye out for any head shots.

Only the NHL would allow someone with a direct conflict of interest to oversee discipline. And then after he’s been proven to intervene on his son’s behalf, allow him to keep that position. Could you ever imagine the NFL doing something like that?
I could imagine the NBA doing that (their officiating is such a joke to begin with), but not any other league. Sad.

Someone please help me settle a debate
I got into a long argument last night with my brother. Maybe I was drunk.
If you were the Caps, and this was somehow a possibility, would you trade Backstrom straight-up for Toews?
I said no, but I’m pretty loyal and at times a blind homer.
He said “in a heartbeat,” but he’s also an asshole.
Thoughts?
Last year maybe not, this year I have a hard time justifying not doing that. I like Nick so much that “heartbeat” might be too fast, but I’d do it.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
But therein lies the conundrum…Nick’s having a down year by his standards, but wouldn’t you say his ceiling is higher than Toews’? Was 101 points even Backstrom’s ceiling? I say it’s higher.
Toews’ ceiling is ridiculously high. He’s a stud defensively and he has 100 point capability. The leadership and intangible stuff is legend, but I’m just looking at pure production. Toews gets it done everywhere all the time. Nick has maybe a tad more offensive skill, and an advantage in the health department, but that’s about it. If you re-draft that year I think Toews is the no-brainer number 1.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
The leadership and intangible stuff is legend
A legend I’ve grown tired of hearing about from the hockey media.
"You do that you go to the box, you know. Two minutes by yourself and you feel shame, you know. And then you get free."
I would imagine you wouldn’t if he played here.

It’s clearly the leadership qualities that give Toews any sort of edge in this discussion, especially given his insane Olympics + Most Outstanding Forward. + Cup + Conn Smythe run last year. My brother’s logic was “if we had Toews there is a 0% chance we lose to Montreal last year” and then I told him to go fuck himself and started chain smoking cigarettes because I was so upset.
But therein lies another question. Can we really say that Toews has better or more leadership qualities because he has the C and because that’s what we hear about? Nicky is a leader as well, even if he’s not the C. Do we discount that just because he’s a quiet leader?
by redpezrocket on Apr 20, 2011 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions
No, never. It’s not just about talent, either. Toews is exceptionally distinguished, and he’s got the Cup, and he’s destined for the Hall of Fame…but so is Nicky, and I think overall, Nicky’s just a better player. He brings a different kind of energy.
Also, Toews is a captain. I don’t think he’d be willing to give that up to be an A for Ovi. And there are times in which I watch Ovi and Nicky play and can’t imagine anyone else replicating that. It’s almost Sedin-like how well they play together.
by redpezrocket on Apr 20, 2011 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions
Would AO be willing to give up the C to be an A for Toews?
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
I agree, I just posed the question to highlight my belief that Toews would be better fit to be the Captain.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
I think the problem with any kind of “what if” questioning is that you simply don’t know. We know what kind of captain Toews is because of his record, but if he played for the Caps, it would be different. Sometimes people excel because circumstances have allowed them to excel. It’s hard to use reality as a basis for how things would have gone.
by redpezrocket on Apr 20, 2011 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions
I’m not buying Toews’ leadership because he won, that’s BS. I just love the way he carries himself and the reviews from people that have been in the locker room. And I have to admit, the fact that he doesn’t get caught out partying routinely enters into it as well.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
I don’t understand the “get caught out partying” aspect of things…everyone is free to have the lifestyle of their choosing. I have no problems with players living as they wish as long as they are responsible, and don’t break the law. Some people like going to clubs, some people like knitting.
by redpezrocket on Apr 20, 2011 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions
Personally, I just don’t buy into all of the young players becoming captains so early in their careers. I’m probably in the minority, but I’d rather see more seasoned players getting the C.
Yeah, I generally agree, but I do think there’s something about Toews.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
I would. It’s close, and it’s not like Toewes is head and shoulders above Backstrom, but he’s a much better defensive player, he plays more physically, and has great offensive skills.
Is Toews really a “much better” defensive player? I don’t know the metrics this year, but in his season review for Hockey Analytics after 2009-2010 Alan Ryder had their defensive player contributions pretty similar, a rating of 17 for Backstrom and 19 for Toews. (To give that context, neither player was even in his top 25 defensive forwards, and the top 5 was Pahlsson, Nielsen, Kopitar, McClement, and Zajac.)

Doesn’t sound good if that is the case…
I’ll be surprised if he plays
"You do that you go to the box, you know. Two minutes by yourself and you feel shame, you know. And then you get free."
Thoughts on lines? How about:
8-19-21
18-44-28
16-90-25
26-15-10
"You do that you go to the box, you know. Two minutes by yourself and you feel shame, you know. And then you get free."
I thought about that. I just think 16 would hold back the scoring potential of 8 and 19 more than 21 would.
"You do that you go to the box, you know. Two minutes by yourself and you feel shame, you know. And then you get free."
My observation is that 16 plays to the level of whoever he is on a line with.
I’m pretty sure I remember some pretty good looking numbers from the (admittedly small sample size) 8-19-16 experiments over the past few years.
I just like the idea of keeping lines intact. Moving 21 would break up what I think has been our best line so far.

Yeah, it was Neil’s best-line-combos post from insider^2. 60% chance ratio with 8-19-16 on-ice.
I also want Laich’s defensive awareness with Marjo. That’s the weakest line defensively, I think, or at least the one the Rangers should be trying to exploit with Gaborik.

I can live with those, although they’re not my favorites. That 3rd line could be productive, if Fehr plays well. Has he been paired with Laich before?

So long as someone who has a history of running goalies is on the 1st line I’m happy with it. I think Fehr is more sneaky, but, Chimera’s full speed “oh sorry I didn’t mean to slam into you” drive to the net will work just dandy.

Anyone else liking the thought of 18-90-25? I have a vague recollection of them being together for a game or two when Sturm arrived, and liking them together.
Geeks of All Nations, Compile!
Absolutely – the blazing speed line. Not so much tonight with Knuble out, but maybe if you could find a way to run a 16-44-28 line and let Laich skate with Ovechkin & Bakcstrom.
With the minutes that Staal and Girardi are putting up, they’re getting tired. Throw in two speed demons on the wings and I think it’ll tire them out a bit more
I also think Bruce would be telling them to dump the puck in and hit those guys at every chance. Who better to the damage than Ovie and Chimmer? Both are fast and big. A period or two of abuse like that, and Stall/Girardi will be coughing up pucks left and right (and of course softening them up a bit for game 5 as well).
Laich has been taking a ton of D-zone draws by comparison, there’s no way Boudreau puts him on as 1RW.

Andrew Gross (Rangers beat writer) on BB:
Funny thing about Boudreau, though. He started the media down the “non-hockey” avenue with his comments, now pretending to take high road.
BB answered a very specific question from a member of the media asking him to compare the legendary MSG to his employer’s newer arena. BB responded with essentially a factual statement, along with some stroking of his team’s fans. And he “started the media down” a low road?
Whatever
"You do that you go to the box, you know. Two minutes by yourself and you feel shame, you know. And then you get free."
a very specific question from a member of the media
Probably the first and last time that Mike O’Meara has ever been identified as a member of the media.
A guy with a microphone was conducting an interview on a major radio station. Your definition of the word “media” isn’t really the point.
"You do that you go to the box, you know. Two minutes by yourself and you feel shame, you know. And then you get free."
Your definition of the word "media" isn’t really the point.
You’re probably right, but it’s borderline insanity to identify a shock jock as a member of the media.
major radio station
Your definition of major radio station amuses me.
…okay but can we focus on the actual point here? :P It’s not whether this person is “member of the media” – in fact that O’Meara is more of a shock jock would a) mean the questions are going to be a little more outside the box and b) the questions AND responses are geared toward a certain demographic.
Sunrise, sunset, swiftly fly the years. One season following another, laden with happiness and tears.
What exactly is your point?
So is Gross then correct? Since BB was asked the question by a radio host at a station you don’t consider significant (and so therefore not a member of the media) then the coach did, in fact, take the media down this road?
"You do that you go to the box, you know. Two minutes by yourself and you feel shame, you know. And then you get free."

You know, it’s always a judgment call. We try to be consistent. We really do. It’s just hard. You look at perceived intent, severity, where the puck is, what’s happening in the game, prior reputation, past judgments – all sorts of factors. Frankly, we also have to consider the position of the NHLPA, and we interview the player. I know it seems like we miss somethings. I wish you could sit in the room with us to hear how hard we deliberate and think over each decision. It’s hard. It’s tiring. I accept the criticism and can only say that I’m doing my best.

Cap Geek actually has a top salary page, as well as top cap hit. There’s also top bonuses, and top AHL salaries (Keith Aucoin tops that one). nifty little tools.

I’m assuming that excludes guys like Redden on 1-way deals.. Actually, I guarantee it does.

Vogel on the radio now. Doesn’t sound encouraging for Knuble. “Dont’ know how long he’ll be out.”

What is the injury? Goddamn. Fucking Belichick gives more info than these guys.

and I’ve been trying to stay positive and kept telling myself “Knuble’s old, he’s just trying to stay fresh and not put too much wear on his body in April.” Sigh.

Remember that Matty P hasn’t been up in a while, so that means if he gets recalled, there’s an automatic two goals in two games right there. The Caps just need to decide when they want those two games to be.

He’s done, unless one of 19, 44 or 90 goes down (knock wood). Would not be surprised if he gets no further NHL time with the Caps, what’s more.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
He’ll absolutely get a qualifying offer. He’s 22 and a point-per-game player in the AHL. He’s got good hockey sense, good hands, and good speed; the tool that’s truly missing is strength.
My guess is he’s 15-20 pounds of muscle away from being a regular NHLer. And that’s something that might not come until he’s 24 or 25.
Tortorella: Can I get another question? I went in here in a pretty good mood today, too.
Larry Brooks: So did I.
Tortorella: Well, you obviously f***ed that up, didn't you?
Correction – Perreault is 23. I misread his birthdate as October ’05 rather than January ’05. Stupid dyslexia.

Larry Brooks: So did I.

Still though, if you have to call someone up and get stuck with MP, I don’t think ANY club would complain.
I’d imagine there are a few teams that would make him a regular 3c
With his lack of faceoff ability, defensive ability, and consistency, I doubt more than a couple would even consider him.
Matt Bradley: He has sensitive skin, no?
The fact that he’s a point-per-game player in the AHL, and is only 23, would certainly tempt some offensively-starved clubs. And it’s not like he’s done nothing at the NHL level – he has 23 points in 56 NHL games (0.41 P/G). That’s not too far off the scoring pace of, say, Nathan Gerbe’s 37 points in 84 AHL games (0.44 P/G).
Were he to end up on waivers during the regular season, I guarantee someone would pick him up and immediately insert him into the lineup.

Why wouldn’t you? He’s low risk high reward. Just give him a look. Don’t want to let a guy like that go too early, only to watch them become a league MVP or clutch playoff producer…
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
Bingo.
Of course, he could get an extended tryout with an NHL team, do nothing, and then get put back on waivers, only to end up in the minor leagues again, win the Calder Cup MVP, and ship off to Switzerland the year after. But let’s wait and see what happens with him before writing him off after this year.

Agreed, I was mostly kidding about having him back up here. I really hope Chimmer does well tonight, otherwise I have a feeling 28 comes up to the top line to get some offense going, leaving the Caps with a 1st line, a 3rd line, and 2 4th lines.

Boudreau on total lockdown, per Kerstein
Just to let you guys know, #Caps Boudreau won’t be having a pregame presser before the game tonight

I find it amazing how no one lets this go. It’s so obvious that he was playing to the camera for that, yet everyone seems to think all he thinks about is junk food.
And anyone in the press who doesn’t know he’s diabetic hasn’t done their homework.

This bears repeating and re-rec'ing
From the Temple of G.O.D:
“Caps lost because the Rangers came in with a gameplan, and the Caps let them execute it. Caps need better discipline (in both senses of the word). They need to stick to, and impose, their own gameplan. And they need to not give in to the urge for retaliation.
The Rangers don’t have enough talent to win this series. Games 1 and 2 showed that. Their forward and defensive depth is their great weakness — they have some players who can play with the Caps, but not enough. The only way the Rangers can win is to cause the overall gameplay to become so ugly, so slow, so rough, that skill differentials are cancelled out.
Caps need to rise above it. Which takes speed, effort, and above all good hockey sense and smart decisions. Everything else is a subset of this."

From cracked.com article about Macgyver:

Caption reads: With hockey tickets and duct tape, you can make everything. Even…love
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
