The Noon Number
1.000 - Michal Neuvirth's save percentage through three games of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals when playing with the lead or trailing. Neuvirth has stopped all nine shots he has faced with the Caps ahead, all 13 when trailing, and 56 of 60 with the score tied. (By contrast, Henrik Lundqvist has saved 12 of 15 shots when leading, seven of eight when trailing and 51 of 53 when tied.)

I’d assume so. If he loses tomorrow, though, I think Varly gets the nod for game five.

Really? We’re already pulling the Varly card? I don’t think you can really pin blame on Neuvy at all for Game 3. The whole team was at fault for the poor play. Why bother Prognosticating about game 4 like that – leave that up to The Peerless guy.
Two of the three goals on Sunday were… subpar. Another similar effort from MN30 and my guess is that Bruce goes to Varly. But Neuvy certainly deserves a shot tomorrow night.

I thought he was subpar also on the fraction of the second too-late goal.

With a deflection off Erskine’s skate and at least 2 guys in the crease with him, no.
DOOMED!
It’s all wrong, but it’s all right.
I don’t blame him for the Erskine deflection, but goals 1 and 2 Sunday were not examples of world-class goalie play.
Neuvy should get the nod tomorrow night.
"You do that you go to the box, you know. Two minutes by yourself and you feel shame, you know. And then you get free."
the puck appeared to go right under his glove in the Dimagus gif, touch the glove then change course and go into the goal. I understand the deflection is an issue but he really didn’t know where the puck was at all when it was touching his glove. So not 100% blame on Neuvy of course, but I think he gets that if he is sharper in that game.
Don Cherry rightly pointed out last night, using video replay, the Caps that were collapsed down on the net during two of the goals.

He also saved their bacon on that 5-on-3 and most of the time on the PK. The Christiansen goal was unfortunate – it was a fantastic shot that he probably doesn’t make for another 30 or so tries, but also not great positioning.
Honestly, the play was WAY too uneven in front of Neuvirth for me to say he had a bad game in particular.

Varly came in for Game 2 two years ago and was stellar for the rest of the round and (with AO and a couple of others) almost stole the Pens series. Last year, came in, and was good, though not stellar. I can’t imagine switching goalies won’t be on BB’s mind…even now, actually.

Didn’t Varly have a great game up in Montreal for Game 3? The Caps won 5-1, and he allowed one goal on 27 shots for a .963 save %. I recall thinking he was Halaking the Habs in that game, or maybe that was Game 4. His play wasn’t as great the last two games, but he had some good ones in that series.
Yeah, 13 or 14 GA in about 5 games and 50 minutes is pretty decent. I’d have liked him to stop any one of those final 6 goals the Habs scored, though, so I’m refraining from saying he was anything more than “good.”

Shouldn’t be a question for game 4; and if he comes out of game 4 with his .951 SV% (3rd in the NHL) and 1.22 GAA (1ST in the NHL) still in tact, it won’t be a question for game 5 either.

Small sample and all, but the Caps’ ability to erase three deficits (all of which have come in the final 21 minutes of regulation) so far has to be at least mildly surprising (and encouraging).
And Neuvy locking down leads and not letting holes get deep has been nice as well.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Now if they could just get to three goals-for in a game…I read somewhere that the 3-goal threshold is an important one for the Caps, or something…some blogger or another, you know?

I’ve noticed how often and quick the Caps have responded to goals against in this series. Now if only they can score more at the beginning of a game…

The goals were soft, but, Miller looked worse last night than Neuvirth did Sunday. Kid has icewater in his veins, keep him in. Play better D instead of swapping netminders.

They’ve played pretty decent D with a lead — Corsi/Fenwick sucks, but, I never seem to be too concerned with them once they’re up.

So all we have to do is score first and we win.

You snark, my friend, but you are true.
23 playoff games thus far and 20 have been won by the team that scores first.
Only the Capitals (game 1), the Canucks (game 3) and the Red Wings (game 1) have comeback to win.

No excuse to put up those kind of numbers and not be winning games. Neuvirth has been fine for the first three games. It’s an issue of timely goal scoring, no reason the Caps shouldn’t be outscoring this Rangers squad. Unless Neuvy is absolutely terrible in game 4 and the Caps score 3 or more goals, then I think Varly gets a chance.
I totally agree with you. Even with the goals he let in Sunday, overall, he’s held it together for the team.

In a deal that brings more nationally televised hockey to American fans than ever before, the National Hockey League and the NBC Sports Group have reached agreement on a record 10-year television and media rights deal, taking the partnership through the 2020-21 season.
NBC remains the exclusive network home and Versus the exclusive cable home of the NHL in the United States. It marks the first-ever national distribution of all Stanley Cup Playoffs games, including, for the first time, exclusive coverage starting with the conference semifinals. The agreement also calls for the NBC Sports Group to televise 100 regular season games per year and introduces a national NBC broadcast on Thanksgiving Friday. The announcement was made today by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Dick Ebersol, Chairman, NBC Sports Group.

In one way it’s bad because hockey will still not reach the mainstream. Everyone watches ESPN. Versus, not so much. On the other hand, Versus is able to devote a lot more time to the NHL than ESPN ever would. For me the devoted hockey fan, I like the extended coverage and I couldn’t really care less about it not being on ESPN. They shit on hockey anyway, so whatever, would rather have a network that is devoted to putting hockey on all the time, and not when it’s just convenient.
It might be better for us as serious fans, but for the growth of the sport?

now that
is one hell of an interesting stat…pretty cool feature you guys have here. I’m curious as to why you guys are so hesitant to giving Varly a start. Neuvirth has looked solid in the three games thus far for a rookie goalie, is this just Caps fans being a bit paranoid?

ah got it…must be nice having a back up you can count on. We did until a puck caught Marty Biron during practice and broke his collar bone now we have “Random AHL level back up” opening the door to the bench

You guys were never going to split the goalie workload like we do, Biron or not. Everyone knows Hank is going to get the vast majority of starts. We’ve had a platoon situation going all year, that’s just not how you guys are built.

over the course of the season i think Biron would have gotten more work down the stretch not saying that he would get time in this series…but Henrik would not have started 30 straight games

Agreed, just saying we don’t have that guy that was going to be in net no matter what. Varly hasn’t reached that level so they’ll ride Neuvirth if he’s playing well.

yeah i see what your saying…its gotta be a tough to have two top quality goalies and get them equal time (three if you include Holtby)

I’d make a distinction here: Henrik Lundqvist is a top-quality goalie. He’s consistently elite and as George has shown, he has a gaudy Sv% against shots taken from the scoring chance area. He’s been doing that for six years in a row, I’d bet he does it again next season.
Neuvy, Varly, and Holtby have been in the league a lot less time. In fact, they’ve got a lot less time-in combined than King Henrik does. But even in that limited time, I don’t think any of them has shown that they’re on Lundqvist’s level. Above-average? This season, yes indeed. But they’ve got a long way to go before they get to Henrik’s status.
