2-0, toughest series lead in hockey. Ha, just kidding, it’s 3-1.

I really feel the team with Arnott, and Knuble will make sure tomorrow has a MUST WIN attitude. This team cant consider any series lead comfortable after years past…
I think it’s very likely that the Rangers will win Game 4. That one is a favorable situation for them, given how the series has been playing out — they get an extra day of rest at home (G3 Sunday, G4 Wednesday). There is also an extra day of rest between G4 and G5 (Saturday).
The best thing the Caps have going for them in this series is their depth. They are taking a physical toll out of Staal and Girardi, and the Rangers have nowhere else to turn. Those extra rest days before Games 4 and 5 play into the Rangers’ favor because they allow Staal and Girardi a little extra time to get right.
So the Caps absolutely have to take it to the Rangers in Game 3, same as they have been. Continue to break down Staal and Girardi, and wear out the rest of the D corps. They’re on their heels now, and that just makes it more important to press the advantage in Game 3 because they get a little respite and a chance to regroup before Games 4 and 5.

I know BB says he doesn’t like to match lines, but I hope he will get strategic in how he puts Ovie out on the ice. I hope he sticks him out there for face-offs and immediately pulls him off. I hope he makes changes right after face-offs. I would do anything to fuck with Tortorella and Staal, if that’s what Torts wants to do.

This makes sense to me, but I’m also a big fan of Boudreau’s “Fuck them, I’m going to put my players out at the times and places I choose because every matchup is favorable to us” philosophy. I wonder if there’s a happy medium out there.

It depends on whether every match up is favorable, I guess. Against the Rags, I think it may be. Strength v. strength down the lineup we win.

I mean I love his philosophy that every matchup better be favorable. I love the confidence behind that. That everyone has to be able to play against anyone

Note that Torts took ~5 minutes from Staal and Girardi at ES (23 minutes or so) and gave them to Gilroy and McCabe (16 minutes or so). On the ice for the first goal? Gilroy (who got absolutely abused by Laich in the pivotal play on that sequence) and McCabe…
Torts is caught between the devil and the sea on this one. I guess with the extra time off between 3 and 4, he can ride Staal and Girardi harder in Game 3…but he runs the peril of them fading in the late minutes.
And AO looked more dangerous in G2 than G1, imo, although he did not score.
Rags are in a tough spot.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Regarding our back and forth yesterday (the day before?), last night’s game is a game I’d have been worried about if it were game 1; a game the Rags could have taken more confidence from. But they were already down 1, you knew they’d come with intensity and desperation, and it didn’t look like we weren’t ready to play (like game 5 against the Habs), it just looked like a team that had to weather the storm. We weathered it (in large thanks to Neuvy), they didn’t weather ours, 2-0 lead.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
Agree 100%.
I also think – after a quick cruise through the DVR, note, so I knew the outcome, which colors things – that the Caps imposed their will better than they did in Game 1 and the Rags did worse in that regard than they did in Game 1.
While the first 10 minutes the Rags were showing some zip, the Caps in general matched their work rate and showed plenty of composure.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
The composure and the work ethic was the key. I also think it helped that Neuvy was just exuding calm and confidence from the first shot.

As long as the Caps keep playing the tight D, protecting Neuvy, and blocking shots they will put themselves in favorable positions during Game 3.
We know the Caps can score, but what matters more in the following games is keeping it out of our own net.
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
The change in this team is remarkable. It had to start with McPhee and Boudreau coming to a few realizations. That the world class talent they had on this team could be used to play world class defense instead of world class offense. But not both. And finally, most important: Offense, no matter how good, is subject to hot and cold streaks, incredible goaltending, etc. And when it goes bad, whatever the reason, you lose. But defense is consistent. Injuries aside, if you are a strong, sound defensive team, you can be that in any game, and if you learn to win that way, you can win any game.
Caps in 5.

Last night on one of the ESPN wrap-ups, when asked if the Rangers still had a chance in the series, Melrose and Barnaby both shook their heads and said (paraphrased) “If the Caps keep playing this way, none.”

It’s all wrong, but it’s all right.

I said in the clips yesterday that the Rangers don’t look like a team built to play from behind against the Caps. The Rangers had nine SOG in the final 40 minutes. If you’re not liking what you see out there, I dunno what to tell you!

The Rangers’ measly 9 SOG are even more impressive considering how much time the Caps spend in their own zone once they got their second goal.

The Rangers don't look like they can play from behind....
against anybody. Their offense is anemic—boring. I watch them and wonder how they got in the playoffs at all—but then I realize that if you have a defensive philosophy you can beat better teams, win games that you really shouldn’t win. That’s how the Devils won a couple of Stanley Cups (beating a tremendous Ottawa team one year), how the Habs beat us last year. And now the once exciting Caps are playing a somewhat boring defensive style themselves.
That’s a fundamental problem with hockey, I think—and football (soccer). A defense-first philosophy is effective, and so lots if not most teams do it. But the game suffers for it, I assert. I watch good football teams with excellent skill players try to crack through a wall of, say, 8 defenders and a keeper, and about 99.5 percent of the time it’s futile. And watching it, fans KNOW it’s futile—it’s Kabuki. Hockey is much the same: we spend three hours watching skill guys trying to get the puck past the four defenders standing in front of the goalie. So many blocked shots! And so they just throw the puck in the zone somewhere and hope for a lucky bounce! Can you imagine if in, say, basketball, half of Kobe Bryant’s shots never even made it to the basket—and a lot of time he just fired the ball at the backboard hoping his teammates would grab a funny carom? I’m sorry—it’s not the time to be complaining about the basic nature of the sport, but these first two rather unexciting games have got me thinking about this again. It’s why I really only sit up when it’s four on four—which of course they don’t have in playoff OT! I’m doomed!
by slipperyice on Apr 16, 2011 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions
I felt these two games were extremely exciting. You may not be getting chances up and down the ice, but the hitting makes up for it. Part of playing a defensive game is playing a physical game and both the Caps and Rangers seem more than happy to do both.
Plus, WINNING makes the games exciting ;)
"I broke my face. Ran into Brendan Shanahan. You can Google it."

To be fair to the Devils, the second two Cups they won their teams were among the league leaders in goals scored. It was the Lemaire team in ’95 that really choked the life from the game and stifled more talented teams.
Fuck OTT, they had high flying offenses and no stones. They never deserved to win anything. I just hope we don’t end up like them.

If you can learn to appreciate the defense first style, then there’s no problem. Most new fans can’t and thats why so many people say soccer is boring. But when I’m watching soccer, when I see a goal often I’m only thinkning about the defensive breakdown or misplay that led to that goal. I loved watching the Caps last year but I find it just as good when they’re shutting down every attack the other team has. As long as the Caps don’t get shut down every time…

How many players get injured trying to block shots? Most blocks are on long shots anyways, and goalies will stop most of those. We’re looking at decreasing injuries* while increasing scoring slightly, but not by a huge amount. Win-win-win.
*may not apply to Semyon Varlamov goalies

My feable brain can’t grasp the idea. Probably because if I’m playing…especially when short handed…my reaction is to try and block shots. And I would suspect that most compettive people feel teh same way.
But going along with the thought that it’s a good idea…how would it be enforced? Block a shot get two minutes for delay of game? It’s just silly to me.
Yeah, 2 minutes for laying down on ice to block shot. That way you can easily differentiate from accidental blocks. I don’t know if anyone else has discussed this issue, it’s just something I’ve been thinking about recently.
Again, as I said below, to me the equipment is a much more serious issue than blocking shots. Quite frankly, I’m really surprised there is more than one person that’s been thinking about this.
Going a step further, if you’re looking for a way to minimalize injuries try doing something with the equipment. There are far more players that are hurt during a hit than when blocking a shot.
Anyone that doesn’t see the excitement in a 1-1 playoff game that goes to OT is watching the wrong sport IMO. Perhaps basketball would be a better choice.
Injury prevention is not really my concern. But when teams are blocking 50% of the shots taken, it leads to NJD-style talent stifling. 2-1 games can be intense and exciting, but that’s often not the case.
Google says that Gainey proposed something like this, so I guess it’s not just my inner demons talking.
Right, but most of those shots aren’t being blocked with a player diving in front of the puck. The gross majority of shots are being blcoked by opposition players getting into the shot lanes. What happens to those players? Also a penalty?
injury prevention is certainly a big component to the issue, though. if memory serves, the NHL has actually taken steps to limit the amount of armour skaters can wear on their legs in order to provide a disincentive for blocking shots. which is a scary decision as stick technology improves and flying pucks become more dangerous, since it seems players are blocking more shots than ever.

Yeah, totally not serious there. I don’t play hockey, but in other sports (like soccer) I’m all about shot blocking.

I didn’t realize you meant specifically sliding. I could get behind that, I guess. The best shot blockers seem like they drop to one knee, and only guys caught out of position need to dive (usually).

It helps how well the Caps have locked down leads too after adopting and then really getting good at BB’s system. The caps only allowed 1 more goal than Boston in the 3rd period over the regular season, who knows how many came before the meltdown / rebuild, and tied 3rd lowest allowed goals in the 2nd period.
If I had time, maybe tomorrow when I don’t have 2 shows to run, I’ll look into the Caps goals allowed by period after changing their system VS the entire league at the same point till the end of the season.

Anisimov’s getting a little bit of a pass because Tortorella buried him last game, I reckon. Both he and Prospal, IMO at least are giving the effort, though not getting the results.
Dubinsky looks like he’s coasting. I said it in our GDT last night, I’ve never seen him so easy to move off the puck as he was last night. Some credit obviously goes to the WSH D, but two games in a row where he’s completely unnoticebale is just not acceptable from him, so he’s rightly getting blasted.

Not with the way Zuc has been used. Zuc needs top 6 minutes and PP time, he’s a waste trying to grind on a 4th line.

That is kind of shocking. How many of those wins after trailing were SOWs? Doesn’t take away from the comeback to tie, but does sort of tarnish the win in a playoff context. Down 2 in the third, I didn’t see anything from their O that made me think we were in much threat, absent our own complete collapse.
Callahan also definitely changes the picture.

I’d have to look, but I’m sure there are a few SOWs in there, and I’d guess nearly all were only 1-goal deficits. I agree, there was nothing about the last night that made me confident they were coming back.

- I’m so excited about Wideman skating and the news that there is no muscle damage. The Capitals defense is going to look scary good with him back.
- For me, Game 3 is the true litmus test we’ve been waiting for from this Caps squad. They really do look like a different team and like they have arrived at this “next level.” I sort of want to pinch myself.
- I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Semin compete so hard. He looks like he wants to win, close to the same way Ovi looks.
- Playoff powerplay goal? Yes please.
- I loved John Erskine completely ignoring Sean Avery tugging on him and then whoever started trying to fight him. Great discipline shown by the whole squad in those last 6 seconds.

It’s just a vocal minority. There are those of us who like him more than others but I’d say the majority of Caps fans – Semin-supporters or no – are well aware that he doesn’t give (or doesn’t seem to give) the same performance on a nightly basis. I may defend him but I’ve never been shy in admitting to that.

Now I’m still reading through the recaps, but I think this the best quote of the night:
"I think we were a little lackadaisical in the third," Jason Arnott said. "We were panicking a little bit. That’s normal with young guys but we have to do a better job if we’re getting the lead going into the third. We have to keep forechecking, keep shooting pucks. They took it to us in the third. Out of all the positives, you have to look at the negatives."

I don’t see it that way, particularly when looking at who these men are and their particular strengths.
Ovi:
Inspirational play
level of game (all aspects of actually playing hockey) that everybody envies and wants to be around.
Wants to win more than he wants to star in the win.
Arnott:
Great Speaker and a Direct one.
Cup Experience, GWG no less.
Not afraid of star power.
Lives the advice he gives.
Relationships with players like Arnott are how stars like Ovechkin learn how to be world class leaders. Ovi has a huge skill set, and Arnott’s part of leadership is something Alex needed to be taught.
If anything, it makes perfect sense that this is happening now and not when Knuble first arrived because The Great 8 was in such a accolade filled couple of years that it might have been hard for 22 to be willing to make the argument that “The Russian Machine” was one of the things that needed changing on the team. Of course, Knuble would have been right, I’m just thinking it might have been a hard sell.

Great points.
Look, OV as captain has been setting the tone and an example for the team to follow. When Bruce changes the system, OV has bought in. Absent that the team disintegrates. He is big enough as a player, teammate and leader not to feel threatened by Arnott and embraces the positives that JA has provided.

My only issue is that you would have hoped that the lesson would have been learned from Federov, someone who Ovechkin would have definitely listened to. Now we are 4-5 years later, 2 veterans later, and we are still trying to get the message across.
Of course, getting this particular message across may have also struggled against the coaching philosophy as well before this year.

Maybe we’re wrong in assuming Fedorov was telling him “leadership” things. Or maybe he was just offering a continuation of Clark’s “den mother/RA” approach.
Arnott is maybe the first general-type leader the Caps’ locker room has really had since Kolzig.
This sig is brought to you by... Frungy, The Sport of Kings!
Well, instead of it being “Ovi didn’t listen” maybe it was “Fedorov didn’t teach.” It’s a two way street.

Fedorov was a passive teacher. If he was asked he would advise. Whatever Feds passed on, I’m certain Ovie absorbed it since his all-around game started maturing while Feds was here. Knuble and especially Arnott are more vocal and take it to their teammates. They are also more disciplined off the ice compared to Feds who seemed to relive his youth with the young Russians. It is a big difference in the messages, the delivery, and the reinforcement.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
I’ve had professors who were like that, who would advise when asked to advise. The problem with that style of teaching is that your students don’t always know what questions to ask.

From the Scotty Hockey recap:
The Rangers rolled right over Washington when Arnott wasn’t there and you had better believe that the former Devil simply would not have allowed results of 7-0 and 6-0. Ovechkin may wear the C but this man is skippering the Caps ship at this point and he has them pointed towards a long run in the playoffs. A veteran leader with Cups on his resume showing his younger teammates the will and the ways to win. Wouldn’t it be nice if the Rangers had someone like that?
"I don’t think too many guys try to talk to him and get him into the play ... if I can do that and it helps out our line then it’s what I’ll do." -- Jason Arnott on Alexander Semin

And his leadership has been valued on overmatched teams many a time. Buffalo went to 2 ECFs (one should have been a Cup but for atrocious luck), Rags have benefited from him, Team USA is never the most talented team but he always makes an impact for us. The guy is a 50-60 point guy that plays great D and is great on faceoffs and a great leader. He’s always been that guy. Rags fans jump all over him because he’s paid like a 90-100 point guy. That’s not his fault. That’s not fair to him. Now he’s got the injuries as well so the fans are even more despondent. I love Chris Drury.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
Relationships with players like Arnott are how stars like Ovechkin learn how to be world class leaders. Ovi has a huge skill set, and Arnott’s part of leadership is something Alex needed to be taught.

I’m not sure if you’re being snarky or not.
I think you can separate captaincy from senior leadership. When the Pens won, Crosby was captain, but they had Sydor and Guerin, who had both been there before. The Blackhawks had John Madden last year, who had been there before.

I’m not sure anyone expected 21 to step up on face-offs like he has, plus there was/is always doubts about 15’s health. Those two have eliminated concern over 39’s face-off skills, which, IMO, was the primary question about the deal.
Assuming the Caps move on and 6 comes back into the line-up, this could be GMGM’s best deadline since the run in 1998, when he picked up Bellows on waivers and Tikkannen for the immortal Dwayne Hay. Both provided leadership and savvy that that team was lacking.

Well, there were worries about his skills declining and giving up a 2nd round pick.
Well, his skills are still there and he brought a level of leadership that I didn’t expect. The bonding with Semin and Ovechkin was completely out of left field.
The conventional wisdom is that there’s great value is having Cup experience, but he’s demonstrated a level of leadership that’s beyond my wildest dreams. He’s the kick in the pants that this group needed.
I also think Laich is being more decisive with the puck and using his power moves more. He’s not playing like he’s a pretty pretty ballerina anymore.

Not just face-off’s either. We always expected some defensive responsibility from 21, and some talk about getting in front of the goalie (which he would sometimes back up), but he has really worked hard at all aspects to become a more rounded player, and a legitimate center.
My real question is where did the speed come from. I have never thought of Laich as a particularly speedy player, but the last month or so he has been absolutely blowing past guys on the ice, and his reaction times and ability to jump on loose pucks has just been crazy lately.

One thing I did not realize about Arnott, and I have to think he had it before, the guy knows where to be on the ice and when to be there. I attribute it to very good hockey sense. On a team with the gunners the Caps have, it’s that much more valuable to have a C that is in the right spot so often.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
I love what he’s doing. Besides seeing him talking with Ovi and Semin, he also was having a conversation with Chimera at one point. I can’t recall seeing that much lengthy talking on the bench before. In the past there were times when some players would come off the ice from a bad shift and it seemed both they and the players on the bench would avoid eye contact. Sometimes when players have been asked whether anyone is saying anything in the locker room we would get the stock statements about “we all know what we need to do and do better,” etc. However, I am a firm believer in having these things said out loud because it confirms what is thought, makes it real, then opens up the opportunity for understanding and improvement.
Are you not entertained?

Patron saint of quality footwear.
It seemed like he’d do the same thing every rush, gun down the left wing and fire a shot, whether it got blocked or missed, and then once in a while it’d hit Hank. I’d love to see him get a little more creative and maybe fake a shot and take it to the middle or even a drop pass and set a screen/pick on the d-man.

He’s making Staal and Girardi skate as hard as they can, and he barely missed a couple of those. Wearing down the top pair has accumulative value going forward, and the continued pressure on Lundqvist also has value.
Eventually he’ll break out and get multiple goals.

The “getting in their heads” factor is huge. Andrew Gordon said it so well:
“It comes down to breaking your opponent’s will, and outworking them mentally before they do the same to you. You have to make them believe they can’t beat you, and then their bodies will just come along for the ride. You have to make them want to quit. Make them see summer right around the corner. At that point, a team can be broken even though there is still hockey to be played.”

Agreed. Last night looked more like #8 from 20 or so games ago where he was the only guy not buying into the whole get the puck deep idea. This was more of the same of quick entry, quick low percentage shot, no offensive zone puck possession, not pressure on the defense.
I would imagine the Rangers defense would love to only have to skate fast up and down the ice all night. For them, it should be too difficult.

I only caught the last few minutes of the game on TV with the rest being unscrambled from the radio. Can I just say that was some real bush league stuff with 3+ Rangers crosschecking one Cap along the boards and just being unnecessarily dirty after that last faceoff, and it is compounded by the fact that it was right out of a timeout. Gotta thinks Tortarella or someone told them to do that if they lost the faceoff.

I found myself strangely at peace with about 15 minutes left in the 3P. The Rangers flurry had just about fizzled out. The Caps were clogging up the middle, and I knew the Caps would get chances. In my world, Ovie buries the breakwaway, but even though he didn’t, I saw no worries.

Certainly, from the perspective that Nashville now has home ice, but they really should be up 2-0. It’s clear that the Ducks cannot hang with the Preds at even strength, at all. Anaheim’s scored 4 PP goals, one ES goal. Nashville’s got 5 ES goals.
Basically, after the first two games, I feel comfortable sticking with Preds in six.

What makes me so confident about this team is that despite shutting out the team that had put up 13 goals against them in two shutouts, and despite taking a 2-0 series lead, and despite everyone gushing over how this Caps team is a force to be reckoned with, this was not a content team in the locker room last night. They’re not satisfied. They’re not content. They’re not looking past two games in MSG to wrap up the series.
They are still focused, hungry, and determined. This is not like the Caps team that went up 2-0 on the Penguins. Not only have they not given the Rangers a whiff of hope like the Penguins had taken with their play, but the Caps don’t consider their work nearly done.
This is the way winners focus. This is the hunger of champions

I agree. I’ll add I don’t think the Caps have played at their A+ level yet. The national media is gushing because they clearly weren’t paying attention the last few months when the Caps were playing legit defensive hockey.
Neuvy has been rock solid and the defense has done its job. But the Caps aren’t capitalizing on chances the way they could/should – breakaways, hitting posts, etc.
There is still another level these guys can get to. To be up 2-0 without “maxing out” is pretty f’n cool. Sunday is critical to see if the attitude we saw post-game last night carries over to the ice. Game 3 should be treated as a must-win.

If you asked me last year to pick between Erskine and Schultz, I would have laughed…
This year, it’s a legitimate question, but I’d still stick with Schultz.
I’d have to say it depends on the team we are facing. Do we need a physical body or a smarter D? They’re both slow footed and Ersk has been doing good D but when Shultz is on he blocks a lot more shots.
In the case of an overachiever vs an underachiever it think you have to examine the strengths each one posses over the other.

Avery's Antics
Can someone help me to understand why a penalty was not called on Avery after he cross-checked unsuspecting Semin, then pounced on him after the whistle? If they called that penalty on McDonagh for upending Gordon, then why did they let Avery go for what seemed to me to be worse? Also, does anyone know if GMGM has any conversations with the refs or league officials after games about non-calls and concerns that players like Avery are getting away with going after skilled players. Seriously, Semin gets called for a hook I never saw, but Avery can get away with a hit to the back and a tackle?

Love it, but I might drop Chimera to the 4th line and put Fehr on the third.
Arnott and AO are still going to draw Staal/Girardi, but you could make a strong case that Nick and Semin have been our best 2 forwards so far. Nick’s puck control has been in top form so far, and Semin has been white hot. Have fun trying to control that line, Rags.

Either. Probably Brads after that horrible PIM last night (but it would have been Hendricks after game 1).
You’re probably right, how do you break up a line that was great last night and produced the GWG/First goal of the game. I still fear Chimera’s hands will let us down in a big moment, but right now you have to reward him. Fehr on the 4th makes no sense though, so you really have to put him with Mackan/Laich because he’s not ready for top 6 I don’t think.

Music to my ears, from Ed F.:
An example of that defensive commitment was how Washington countered a major offensive tactic from New York in Friday’s game. The Rangers repeatedly tried to get the puck behind the Caps net, have a forward go one way in an attempt to drag Neuvirth and the Washington defenders in the direction the player was going, and then backhand the biscuit behind them to a teammate at the back post for an open net. Tortorella’s crew used this play in the neighborhood of 10 to 15 times with no sale. In fact, the Capitals routinely had a defensemen or a forward covering the back post and centers Backstrom and Johanssson were superb at snuffing that play out. Green pointed out the forward support as a big reason why the Caps were able to blank New York on the scoreboard.
I don’t even know where to start with how much I love that quote…

I’ll start with: Our Swedish C’s are extremely good, and responsible, in their own end of the ice.
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
Another awesome quote from Arnott about Semin in the Gulitti article
"He came to play and he was determined to score goals and play sound defense,"Arnott said. If you get that out of him, he can be one of the elite players and one of the best players in the league. He’s got so much talent. It’s crazy. To me, in Game 1 it looked like he wants to win and wants to come to play and enjoy doing it, so that’s a good thing for us."
If Semin is this determined and plays with this effort and fire, G.O.D’s prediction of him winning a Conn Smythe could be much sooner than any of us thought.
"Ovechkin is as subtle as a shot of vodka."
Let’s tease out the elements that make my nipples hard:
1. Coaching. This speaks to plenty of time in the video room. It also speaks to an adjustment based on what the Rags did on Wednesday, when they also tried this play several times, and actually scored on a pass from below the goal line. BB appears to have learned something from the Montreal debacle and changed his approach.
2. Buy in. It doesn’t work like this unless the whole team buys into the concept and commits to supporting each other.
3. Execution. It also doesn’t work if you don’t execute the game plan, and they did.
4. Maturity. Overall, it paints a picture of a team that understands the little things that lead to winning and has grown up.

Which segues into my next point: do you know what country Henrik Lundqvist is from? Sweden! I only know Sweden for three things: socialism, shitty furniture stores, and how they managed to out-Switzerland Switzerland during the Second World War. Did you know Ryan Callahan’s granddaddy slit 3,497 Kraut throats barefoot in -10 degree weather whilst single-handedly rescuing the 101st Airborne from Bastogne?* Or how Brandon Prust’s grandfather secured the beachhead at Juno Beach for the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, and if that wasn’t enough, sprinted like forty miles to save the American landing at Omaha?** Both true stories! You know what Hank Lundqvist’s grandfather was doing around then? I wonder who it was ....
This is from the BSB recap:
The Blueshirts actually got off to a good start and played a strong first period tonight. They came out hitting, they found ways to maintain possession of the puck on the forecheck and were outshooting the Caps, 13-7, at the conclusion of the opening stanza. But, as usual, they came out of the period with no goals on the board.
Someone must have taken charge of the Washington locker room during the first intermission, because they took the ice as a different team in the second period.

Not sure if anyone here made it out to practice today, but I made it over in time to see Wideman finishing up his skate. A few thoughts:
- By the time I got there some of his teammates were starting to trickle out onto the ice and Wides was skating around with them, smiling a lot and passing the puck a bit with them, he seemed happy to be around everyone again
- He was working on strengthening muscles (obviously) – lots of skating in kind of a funky squat position, skating backwards, etc.
- Definitely not up to full speed and at times I saw him wincing a bit, but he generally looked very smooth
- I’m eternally amazed at how a guy can be skating on the ice without blatantly obvious signs of injury and then step off the ice and start walking with a pronounced limp like Wideman was today
So…I’d say we’re still a little ways away from him actually returning but I could see him back in plenty of time for Round 2 if the Caps get there. Considering it was just his second day skating he looked good.
Sunrise, sunset, swiftly fly the years. One season following another, laden with happiness and tears.
I was thinking about it, and I wonder if it has to do with the weight distribution with skates vs. walking. On the ice, he can put a little more weight on his good leg and still skate. You can’t walk with only one leg, so he has to make a more concerted effort to put much more weight on the good leg, hence the limp.

I think that’s a lot of it but skating uses different muscles and puts force on your legs/hips in different angles and pressure levels than walking/running so there are certain situations where it literally just doesn’t hurt as much to skate as to walk/run.

That’s true — from my own experience. I had hurt my toe pretty bad once but I could actually skate on it better than walking.

Thanks for the report on practice. I didn’t make it in time to see Wideman but was there to see most of the practice. One thing I’ve noticed about Caps practices (but I never seem to think of it in time) is that lots of guys are on the ice before the “official” starting time.

Divisional Realignment?... again
Has the Pheonix-to-Winnipeg deal been discussed here?
It could be a good chance to change the divisions. A thanks to What Juneau About That for the great map
Here’s my realignment plan (after countless tries, one which had 5 divisions and I had no idea what to do with the playoffs), but I couldn’t think of a way to keep all the rivalries and make sense with respect to distance, so I mainly just kept to whoever is closest to whoever else. And G.O.D. probably wants to yell at me for this, but here we go:
I’m torn about what to do with Pittsburgh here. This puts them in a division with Detriot, which could grow into, if it isn’t already, a great rivalry. But then it takes them away from the Caps and Flyers, which would be a shame.
Anyone else think they can put it all together better?
Why reorganize the divisions? It’s logical for divisions to be organized by geographic region. The Penguins need to be in the same division as the Flyers because they’re both in the same state. Likewise, the Caps are a division rival to the Pens because of the respective captains, not geography.
It also doesn’t make sense to place the Caps in a division mainly dominated by the mid-north. The Capitals are definitely the most geographically south of any of the teams in your revised divisions. I would keep the caps in the southeast.
by redpezrocket on Apr 16, 2011 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions
While the Pens and Flyers are in the same state, they’re at opposite ends of a VERY long state. I actually think putting the Pens in the same division with Detroit, Columbus; etc. makes a lot of sense. I think a great rivalry could develop between the Blue Jackets and Pens, fueled a great deal by the football rivals. And, of course, the rivalry between the Pens and Red Wings would become even greater.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
Nashville, just by looking at the map, looks closer to all the current SE teams than the Caps besides Carolina. The Caps and Philly are very close, and

I recall we’ve had a discussion about this before. in the last realignment, Detroit was promised in a gentlemen’s agreement that if there was movement of Western teams to the Eastern Conference, they would be the first team.
Caps and Pens have had a huge rivalry since before the Sid/Ovie era, btw. I haven’t been a Caps fan/alive for long enough to have much experience with that, but this isn’t something limited to the past 5/6 years.

There’s also the time zone consideration. Swapping Pittsburgh and Nashville gives the Pens a lot more 10:00 starts and Nashville a lot more 6:00 starts. I don’t see that happening.

All in the Central division now are just 1 hour off EST, right? So It’d give them some 8pm starts when they play in division.
They’d still have 7:00 games at Detroit and Columbus too, but playing @ everyone in the NW and Pacific twice instead of 9 total road games against the NW, Pac, and Central is a pretty big difference.

I don’t think every NY team needs to be in the same division. Similiar to how the Nats and Os, Skins and Ravens, Yankees and Mets aren’t all in the same division despite basically playing in the same cities or within very close distance.
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
But hockey doesn’t have an AFC/NFC, AL/NL set up. If they wanted to go that route, they could, but it’s been regional divisions in one league unlike the other sports. The NFL and MLB have geographically-based divisions within their separate “leagues.”

I went over there (to BSB) and noticed how much he (Dubinsky) was being ripped. And, of course, they’re wondering what to do about Gaborik as well. Would the fans be referring to Dubinsky as an enigmatic if his ancestors hadn’t emigrated to North America and had instead remained in their Eastern European country of origin.

The team has six former #1s on it. Given the Rangers are a cap team, I think it’s mostly irrelevant that 5 of 6 weren’t Rangers picks. Not that I believe we have 1st line talent on this team, we pretty much don’t, but Dubinsky, Callahan, Anisimov, and Stepan all should have top 6 futures, and they have a couple of kids in Kreider and Thomas that should as well.
The draft history thing is really a pre-lockout thing, since Clark took over, the record seems to be ok, though certainly still graded incomplete right now.

That’s fair. I like Dubi and Cally a lot, I love Stepan, and I don’t know what to make of Kreider. I could see Kreider doing big things and becoming a real sniper in this league, or not really panning out to much more than a 20/50 guy. His speed and shot are tantalizing.

I notice a couple of the guys are tweeting about flying to NYC and it makes me wonder why they don’t take Amtrak to the close locations (Philly, Newark, NYC). The time is about the same from Arlington to Dulles or Union Station. If you fly to New York, then you have to bus into the city. So you end up spending the same amount of time travelling, give or take. Might even be faster to take the train.
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
I’m guessing it has more to do with convenience, in the sense that they don’t have to deal w/ other passengers – it’s easier to get all their equipment and stuff stored away on a plane, the odds of finding a train with enough tickets for all of them (and then seats all together so they don’t have to be spread out amongst the “commoners”) is slim, etc.
Sunrise, sunset, swiftly fly the years. One season following another, laden with happiness and tears.
Yeah, probably. I’m just picturing that ride that the Penguiins took that was chonicled by somebody (NBC, nhl.com?) maybe a couple of years ago. I think they went from here to Philly or the reverse. Of course, it was great PR, too, so who knows.
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
I was thinking about that the second you mentioned it :P It was NBC, they went from Philly to DC on a train.
But I think something like that probably takes a lot of pre-planning, which you can’t really do for the playoffs because you don’t know who you’ll be playing until about a week before it happens.
Sunrise, sunset, swiftly fly the years. One season following another, laden with happiness and tears.
I’m certain Ted has the wherewithal to hire a private RR car, if Amtrak would let him. He could bring back the glory days of train travel in the U.S.

I think the Redskins do (maybe used to?) take the train up to Philly and possibly NYC. I know they were offering “Fan Experience” tickets that had train tickets with the team along with seats at away games a couple years ago. It does seem more convenient – and a hockey team has a lot less people than a football team.
Really wish the NHL would have pushed up BUF/PHI an hour and put it on VS. NBC-VS-VS-VS for the four playoff games today? Yet again, the NHL shows it is completely inferior to the NBA when it comes to TV exposure. (And PHI/BUF might have the best combination of hockey markets of any of the games today.)

A perfect example as to why ESPN should be considered in the next TV contract. Multiple channels, plus ABC. None of this BS.
"I remembered when he said that and I kind of looked at him during the warm up and told myself that I got to shut these guys out tonight." - Michal Neuvirth, 02.06.11.
NBC/Comcast/Versus have plenty of channels, they just need to use them. ESPN would relegate hockey to the backwoods where it used to be.
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
Wasn’t there some noise last week about ESPN offering a deal that would put hockey on ESPN2 everynight, with additional games on ESPN, and ABC on the weekends? Since they’re a minority owner of TSN, they wouldn’t even need to supply additional cameras or crew. ESPN has the NBA rights, so naturally promote the shit out of it. If they were to get NHL, you’ve got to assume they’d show hockey the same respect.
Of course, this may just be my Comcast-hatred come out.
"I remembered when he said that and I kind of looked at him during the warm up and told myself that I got to shut these guys out tonight." - Michal Neuvirth, 02.06.11.
I don’t know why it’d be any different this time around. If memory serves correct the NHL was almost never on ESPN proper, had about the same number of games during the week (when compared to current VS) and NHL2night was on most nights.
The last I remember, ESPN2 had games on Thursday. Versus has games at least Monday and Tuesday, and has those extras of picking up the local broadcasts. So end of the season, you had a game every night. If the two networks shared, like ESPN and TNT for basketball, that could theoretically work, but if I’m Versus, I’m not sharing.
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
Sharing isn’t a bad solution at all. I’m still holding out hope that Versus/Comcast/NBC can come up with some real competition to ESPN. My hatred for ESPN is atleast on par with bagace’s apparent hatred for Comcast.
Ed Snider (the Chairman of Comcast, who also owns the Flyers) isn’t going to let the NHL contract get away from NBC/Versus. I’m pretty sure they have the right to match any competitor’s offer for the NHL’s US rights.
I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.

Looking at the roster, it’s hard to see how, but I’m with you.
Alzner & Varlamov would seem to be your priority FA’s.
Then, you’ve got Laich and Hannan. Then Bradley, Gordon, Sturm. I assume Sturm doesn’t return. I’m also hoping they find a way to remove Poti.
Even so, I’d put Laich and Hannan ahead of Arnott right now.
Life With Spidey -- a blog about sports, travel, work, family and fun.

I agree with all that, as nice a story as Arnott is, he has less in the tank than either of the other guys. Can’t lose them for a one-two year guy. And, fuck, we really need to move Poti.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
In theory, you’d create $3.575 by moving Sloan and Poti. Then, you might be able to save by moving Varlamov and bringing up Holtby.
Hannan is at $4.5M this year. He’s 32 and has made that amount for four years. Does he sign for less to get a multi-year deal? Can we get him for Poti’s $2.875? Seems incredibly doubtful.
Life With Spidey -- a blog about sports, travel, work, family and fun.

I would be comfortable with Hannan at $3m. He has been indispensable to this team. If they are as focused and dedicated to defense as they claim they are, they can’t afford to lose Hannan or Alzner. And of the two, Hannan is the only one for which money would be a “problem” for the salary cap (meaning that Alzner’s pay raise wouldn’t be too big to constitute a problem).

Varly doesn’t seem to want to leave DC. Now, I can see how he stays (and I’d love for him to stay) if he can 1) stay healthy and 2) be a reasonable price but he’s said that he would not want to be a backup goalie, and would spend his time trying to get back to being the #1 goalie again.
Which is fine…but how much does that affect you if you go into negotiations fairly confident that you’ll be backing up Neuvy, and won’t get the salary you were hoping for as a #1. I like Varly a lot, but I like Neuvy more.
I can see how Holtby would be a better option, price wise, because you could pay him less and he would be coming into the #2 job absolutely knowing and accepting his position.
by redpezrocket on Apr 16, 2011 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think Holtby sees himself as a NHL back up either…that being said whichever (Varly/Holtby) is here, I don’t think the situation changes…it’s going to be 1a/1b.
What I mean is that if he’s deemed able to take on the NHL full-time next season, he’ll be up here in a capacity to either back up Neuvy or, as you said, be a 1b, and I see him being much more amenable to that than Varly would ever be.
by redpezrocket on Apr 16, 2011 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions
I love Holtby, but he could definitely use another year in the AHL. Hell this year is the first in the playoffs for him. He’d very good, but could need more conditioning. He won’t be a problem for a year or two.

Yea I can’t see us signing him for more than 2, he isn’t a loyal soldier yet. Preferably only for 1, but I can’t imagine Arnott signing for just 1. But if he really wants to play for us and takes a cut and one year, could work out. I just can’t see him doing that when some other team will likely offer him more in terms of salary and years.

So game 2 was fairly even, maybe in favor of TBL then; delay of game and too many men aren’t player-on-player penalties.

An explanation for lack of Pittsburgh penalties in that series: no Matt Cooke. The explanation for 0-for-13 is no Crosby, Malkin, etc.
As long as the officiating is consistent it should even out, but the refs do seem a lot stricter than the ones we got.
