I’d be interested in this data. I bet it’s not as large as you’d think. A lot of fans are dormant during down years, but were there before.

I bailed when they picked up Jagr. I spent the better part of a decade loathing him, no way I could cheer for the guy that became the centerpiece of a team. Was so happy when he was shipped out and I could enjoy hockey again.

you can feel it in the stands: As soon as the game is nothing-nothing in the third period, fans are like, ‘Oh God, when is it going to happen? . . . It’s gonna happen to us again.’ I wish that specter would go away. I want it to, and it will. They’ve just got to win."
Do you think that effects the on-ice performance? I’ve always wondered how much the fans’ psyche plays into the players’. It has to have an effect, right?
If so, are all of these blown leads and letdowns somehow OUR fault? (methinks yes).
The keyboard is mightier.

From Blueshirt Banter scoring chances recap:
the Washington Capitals’ ‘counter-punching’ created more than half of their total chances for the game, and twice as many as the New York Rangers were able to generate, and both of their goals were quick strike situations.
the Rangers were not able to keep Washington to the outside much, with 17 of the 21 Caps chances coming from up the middle and around the net.
More please.

The chances from in tight were particularly encouraging. Hopefully that continues.
Also encouraging: the Rags’ 1st line really did well against the Caps’ second line. The Rags’ first line has been broken up, with AA to the 4th and Christensen to the first.
Schultz was on the ice for 10 chances-for and 5 against. Just sayin’.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
both of their goals were quick strike situations.
Accurate, but misleading. The first goal started on a controlled breakout from behind our net. Green made a great stretch pass up the middle when the Rags forecheckers pressured the two normal outlets; Rags D collides, sending AO and Semin in alone, goal. It was a full ice rush (weird how little we’ve seen of that this year), not really a counter-punch. The second was a classic failed clear goal. Both happened pretty fast, but that’s the end of the similarity as I see it.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
The first goal was perfect.
1) Gain the O-zone.
2) Crash the net.
3) Don’t rip the puck past the top corner and spring the other team on a 4-2.
4) Whack away at the rebound until you hear the whistle, then whack one more time for good measure.

Right, that’s what we’ve looked for all along. Of course, we rarely have a chance to stand there and whack without 5 guys from the opposition busting our balls.

Helps when #8 throws one of them across the crease like he’s swatting at a fly. Also doesn’t hurt when the defensemen crash into each other as Semin’s heading into the zone.

For all the trouble the Caps had generating speed through the neutral zone for 80% of the season, that was only an issue in game one when the Rangers had the lead for 11 minutes. I think the Rags are going to really struggle when the game is tied or when they are trailing.
IIRC, Rangers led Corsi (barely, +1) through regulation. They got mauled in OT.

How are you all feeling after game one? I know a lot of the Rangers’ post-game comments were along the lines of “we did a lot of positive things, we just need to keep at it.”
Is the general consensus that they’ll be OK with a repeat performance?
I’d say the general pulse is ‘cautiously optimistic.’ I think most realize the team got away with murder for a long time before they started to at least create the illusion of controlling things.
The positive spin is that they had a lead in a game where their leading scorer was absolutely awful, their most talented forward was just ok, and their top pair was overworked and generally unproductive.
Personally, I still have the same feeling about this series, can see Caps in 4 to Rangers in 7, and everything in between.

I really think that you have to at least give your 5/6 time on the ice. McCabe is over the hill, yes, but if he’s such a defensive liability, find someone else.
Can’t really trust McCabe and Gilroy to take Ovechkin, and that SOB is seemingly always on the ice. Makes it tough.
The only other solution is to trust the kids more and try to make Staal/Girardi’s minutes at least a tad easier, rather than have them solely chasing Ovechkin around for 20 minutes a game.

You mean Connecticut, and no. They don’t have anyone ready, and even if they did (for instance, if Del Zotto was healthy), they’re already at the post-deadline call-up limit, so it would only be allowed w/ an injury emergency.

I’m a huge Chris Drury fan, but he really shouldn’t be out there as he’s clearly not 100%. Throughout the game he’d go out for defensive zone draws only to skate off right after his team gained possession (which is likely what led to the OT goal). Between him and Anisimov, there just wasn’t enough pressure on the Caps’ forwards as they came through the neutral zone.
Matt Hendricks is a honey badger.
Fair enough
I did pigeon-hole the categories a bit, so there’s no differentiation between a controlled end to end rush and an offensive zone/neutral zone turnover that sprung the opposition the other way. I could break ‘transition’ down’ a little further, to maybe neutral zone turnovers and full-ice rushes, to get a little better picture.

Either way, it was good stuff and hopefully with feedback it’ll be even more refined as the series wears on.

Agreed. Not knocking the work, just pointing out how I saw the two goals. It’s the basic problem with coding scoring chances, so many possibilities of how they came about.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
Oh, you’re absolutely right. When I wrote it, I was more thinking about quick strike in terms of the play came down and it was in the net quickly. There’s definitely a big difference between the Ovi and Semin goals and how they developed.
Usually, people complain about the differences in where the shot came from and how they developed, so I figured I’d take a stab at capturing it. There’s a canyon of room for refinement.

From the Hockey Prospectus article:
History is therefore not telling us that depth is a bad thing, but rather that it is far less important than how good the team is overall
Um, yeah. This is a strange read. One would think, from the chart and the first couple of grafs, that the point is the importance of depth to a playoff run. But then they seem to argue that depth isn’t very important, only to sum up that depth probably is important all else being equal (how do you calculate that?).
名誉と大きな脳物質のステッケルミーエルモ男!
All else being equal, if you have something else that makes it unequal in your favor, that is good for you. Duh.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
That article was definitely difficult to pick a conclusion out of. The gist of it, as I read it, was that depth is important but will not bail you out if you have a sub-par top line. So if two teams both have great top lines, the team with better overall depth will fair better (obviously). But a team with a fantastic top line and mediocre depth still has a better chance against a team with a mediocre top line and fantastic depth.
Great Top Line > Great Depth > Mediocre Depth.
by HockeyGoalie29 on Apr 15, 2011 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions
they seem to argue that depth isn’t very important, only to sum up that depth probably is important all else being equal (how do you calculate that?).
…perhaps if they’d used one of their own measures, a normalized GVT. I keep wondering about that “replacement” player in the GVT measure.
If you've read this far...seek help.
A season ago, that replacement player was Craig Adams – GVT: 0. Three-quarters of the way through this season (since GVT hasn’t been updated), it was Tyler Bozak and Jamal Mayers. Congrats to all of our Mr. Replacement contestants…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Depth is important, unless it’s not, except on those occasions when it is.
On the Caps particularly, I’m not convinced by the total numbers they show. The “depth” players were, for a long part of the season, MP, MarJo (in the early stages of a learning curve, note), Hendricks, Chimera, Fehr, Steckel, Bradley and Gordon. Not a lot of GVT there. Getting Arnott and Sturm has a cascade effect of making the third line more dangerous, and also more manageable. The 4th line becomes more of a typical energy line.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
By examining the collective GVT of a team’s top line vs. its depth players, we can see which teams get the most contribution from their grinders.
Washington 95.1
They have WSH “top line” as having a total of 95.1 which by my math would incl (in alpha order):
Alzner
Backstrom
Carlson
Green
Hendricks
Knuble
Laich
Ovi
Schultz
Semin
So there’s one issue: Hendricks over MJ90 as part of the “top line,” when I would classify Hendy as a “grinder.”

I have similarly conflicted attitudes toward depth. It has its value, particularly in the playoffs where injuries can be so influential. Where people err on depth is in believing that it’s a substitute for having elite players. . . it isn’t. Chicago had great depth last year, but they don’t win if Toews, Kane, Hossa, Sharp, Keith, Seabrook and Niemi don’t play well. Guys like Bolland, Versteeg and Kopecky are nice to have, because they can exploit the opposition’s weaker players in limited ice time, but they’re not capable of driving the bus, so to speak.

Now that is one legalization campaign I can not get behind. Extending injured, aging veterans prematurely will surely be the downfall of this country. The kids see this kind of behavior and think “hey, I can be mediocre at my job and take lots of sick days and still become a millionaire.” That’s not how Amurica works. Won’t someone think of the children? For once? For my sake, for your daughter’s sake, keep Poti illegal (or at least get a guarantee on the box).

In Vogel’s preview, he writes that
…the Capitals are generally happy with their opening game performance. They should be. They controlled the play for the most part…
[Emphasis mine]
and
…Washington can take comfort in having the played the style of game it wanted to play in Game 1…
I find myself in complete disagreement here.
In general, I thought the style of game was precisely what the Rags hoped for. In particular, NYR had zero resistance through neutral and were able to get the puck below the goal line and cycle, which was pretty obviously their goal.
I also thought that the Caps controlled play in the first, and for the final ~12 minutes of the OT. In between, the Rags did pretty much what they wanted.
That’s not to say the Rags dominated in the traditional sense. Their strategy, to me, was to spend as much time in the Caps end, hope to get a couple ugly ones, and then let Lundy do the rest. It almost worked.
For tonight, I’m hoping that the Caps spend a bunch more time in the Rags’ end, and generate more chances off of zone pressure and rely less on transition (while still capitalizing in transition, where they obviously have an edge).
I know it’s the playoffs, and it’s extremely rare for one team to dominate entirely; the other guy is going to get some chances. But I thought that analysis was…odd.
Agree or disagree?
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Agree or disagree?
Too early to tell IMO. The game was fast paced (at first) but it seemed more like a game where they were feeling each other out.
Then again, I think a lotta game 1’s this round seemed like “feeler” games. Definately a lot of low scoring affairs: PHI vs BUF, MON vs BOS, our game, VAN vs CHi
If those are my only two choices I have to disagree…. but with caveats and addenda.
Agreed that the Rangers were allowed thru Neutral and to cycle the puck.
But also looked like the Caps were not going to give up passing lanes, or chase the puck just because the NY had possession. Basically, the way I interpreted Caps D was they were content to allow point “blasts” (hehe I said blasts) into traffic as a route to puck possession, rather than losing a man in the slot or along the wall by chasing after the cycle. This is in no way to say I think this was smart, but it did seem intentional.
To me, the Caps looked comfortable even when the Rangers had the puck (as in no panicked skating, very little blown coverage, no ranger in the slot was allowed a stick on the ice, centers and D didn’t leave their men in dangerous areas to chase after the puck lose in the scrum that sort of thing). It appeared that there was a team game plan of, “No matter what, they don’t get the middle of our zone” as opposed to, “We must get the puck out now.”
Subjective evidence to support this is: high percentage of ES NYR shots attempted from the blue line.
Their strategy, to me, was to spend as much time in the Caps end, hope to get a couple ugly ones, and then let Lundy do the rest. It almost worked.
Agree that this was the NYR strategy. Agree that it almost worked. But I also think this is exactly why BB et. al. took a, “Nobody gets the middle. Not for any reason.” approach. You have to get to the net with some control of your stick to get an ugly goal, and I only saw that happen twice, and on of them Ovi scored.
Hell, maybe I’m just going a bit Pollyanna, but it didn’t look like the Caps felt threatened when NY had the puck, and it sure seemed like when the Caps had the puck, they felt they could out play the Rangers’ D.
Anyway, that’s what I saw. However…
For tonight, I’m hoping that the Caps spend a bunch more time in the Rags’ end, and generate more chances off of zone pressure and rely less on transition (while still capitalizing in transition, where they obviously have an edge).
That right there is what I want to see tonight.

I disagree with you. The Rags are a good team, they are going to make some plays. I thought we really limited their quality chances and with a couple exceptions didn’t get pinned in our zone for too long. The Caps aren’t in a trade-chances mode anymore. They were patient and trusted their skill to prevail, which it did. Last year the team would have visibly been rocked by those two quick crossbars and/or the third period goal against. I was real happy with what I saw the other night (other than bullshit standard definition).
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
You think the Caps controlled the play and dictated the style of play?
Patron saint of quality footwear.
For 60 minutes did they dominate and make it look like they were playing an NCAA DIII team? No.
But the Caps were undoubtedly the better team, undoubtedly had the better scoring chances, and deserved to win. That would have been another in a long line of playoff injustices if the Rags had stolen that one. The Rags are a good team and won’t quit. Don’t expect a 45-12 shot total in this series. Don’t expect a walk in the park.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
On balance, who controlled more of the play, and who had greater success getting the other team to play the way they desired?
Caps better team? Agree.
Caps had the better scoring chances? Agree.
Rags going to work hard and get some chances? Absolutely.
Basically, the Rags’ only chance is to make it a stealable game by slowing it down, cycling and getting a combo of great goaltending and good luck. I thought they were successful in that regard.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
What makes you say the Caps didn’t play the way they desired? Have you not been tracking the systems change? You should never have expected the Caps to play run and gun. They were going to try to control the puck, not give up high quality chances against, and be patient for their opportunities. I thought that’s exactly what they did.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
Have I not been tracking the system change? Of course I have.
The Caps wanted (I think) to forecheck, cycle and possess the puck. Which they didn’t do all that well.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Guess we either saw different things or had vastly different baseline expectations.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
Fair enough. Don’t know why I particularly care, as the Caps got pretty rotten luck to avoid being up at least a couple going in to the third. Nonetheless…
You’re WRONG!!1
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Agreed. There weren’t many times in game one were I really felt nervous about what the Rags were doing. When the puck was in the Caps defensive zone most of the play was along the boards and in the corners and very little actually funneled to the middle. Neuvirth was good when he had to be, but he had a rocking chair night compared to what Lundqvist had to face. Even though the Rangers had the lead late in the third, the Caps really controlled the play for most of the game.

Bit late to the discussion from yesterday’s Clips, but re: this hit…

Caps definitely lucky not to have Erskine sitting for a game, IMO (in part due to the hit itself, in part due to the current climate on similar hits, in part due to the inconsistent Wheel o’ Justice).

The sitting for a game would come from the elbow use, I assume. Hard to tell from this angle, but he does seems to get that left elbow up into no-no territory. One would think they’ve reviewed it, but could a suspension still come?

Agree on being hard to tell from this angle. I’d need to see it either from the side or from 180 degrees around to get a better feel for if the elbow made contact or Erskine’s shoulder hit the head. From this angle though, I’d say a clean shoulder to shoulder hit.

No way to prove it, of course, but I’m guessing that if that was Sauer on Johansson, Caps fans wouldn’t view it as north-south and/or the shoulder as the principal point of contact.

Depends on the angle of the camera :)
I didn’t like Johansson getting dumped in OT though because he was hit and thrown into the boards from the goal line, which is dangerous. However the hit itself was good in it being shoulder to shoulder and as a result Jojo, while taking a particularly hard hit, was able to control himself into the boards and get up unscathed.

This is another one of those plays that at full speed looked like a solid clean hit to separate the man from the puck, but when slowed down and reviewed it still looks solid just not so clean. I think the left elbow "push away" at the end makes it look worse than it really was, but agree that this probably could have gone either way if it was reviewed for a potential suspension (1 game max).

In the context of Game 1, that’s not even remotely close to a penalty. In the context of a normal playoff game, a penalty maybe. In the context of a regular season game, that’s a game or two off for Erskine if there was an injury. In the context of the rulebook, that’s a charge, elbow with a splash of boarding.
Many a night from yonder ivied casement, ere I went to rest,
Did I look on great Orion sloping slowly to the West.
Caps definitely lucky not to have Erskine sitting for a game
Really? I look at that and it seems like a textbook clean hit. Erskine leads with his arm to the Ranger’s shoulder and his feet never left the ice. The NY player hits his head against the glass, but that’s because it was so close to the boards. In fact, I don’t think Erskine even touched the guy’s head. To me, it was a perfect non-call. If the NHL starts eliminating those kind of hits, I fear for the game.
I think I explained my reasoning – I thought the hit was borderline, or at least close enough to it that in today’s NHL, since the dude’s head hit the glass hard, there was a chance it’d be reviewed. And once it’s in the hands of the reviewer… who the hell knows?
I don’t think it was a suspendable hit, but I think it was close enough that, all things considered, a one-gamer wouldn’t have surprised me.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

I think he’ll be sitting for a game, maybe two. That’s a brutal hit. If Ovi’s hit on Campbell last year deserved 2 games, Stoll’s hit is easily 4, which after applying a generous playoff discount, works out to 1-2.

Yeah, kudos to Mirtle for actually having the guts to buck the trend of just looking at points in deciding ROY. I’ve always believed that voting for the Rookie of the Year should be weighted two to three times in favor of defensemen over forwards and goalies because of the difficulty in playing the position.
My only problem with Carlson for Calder is that while Subban (who I’d love to punch in the face) seemed to gain more confidence and get a little better as the season wore on, Carlson plateaued and seemed to lose steam.
Also, just like how I thought Crosby’s rookie season was more impressive than Ovechkin’s because he’s 2 years younger (even though Ovechkin had a better year and deserved the Calder), Skinner’s season was the most impressive because he’s just so young.
Carlson had a rough patch in January and rebounded. Not sure where you are talking about losing steam. Plateau isn’t such a bad thing when your plateau is “top D pair on your team.”

Apparently he doesn’t have Caps-quality D in front of him and Charlotte is a bunch of speedy what-nots. And Tim Leone was lamenting that Collins is here in DC. Take that for what it’s worth, or at least what it tells you about the Hershey defense.
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
Holtby gave up a goal on the very first shot he faced.
And a second goal on the third or fourth shot.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
I posted the youtube video link to the Hershey site with the highlights/lowlights; somewhere in this mass of posts.
I know I was lamenting Collins absence, but I missed Leone saying something about him being on call-up. Fact is Collins played almost the whole season for Hershey and was very steady on the blueline. There’s a huge drop-off from Collins to Oreskovic. Still not sure why Oreskovic got a jersey over some other D options like Miskovic (unless he’s hurt) or Kroll or even Yeo, but Collins has more experience than any of them. Leone tweeted a positive comment about Orlov’s performance during his first NA pro playoff game, but Orlov did take a penalty in the third period.
As to Holtby, he made one amazing save by all reports late in the second period, some other stellar saves and one goal went in off Gordon. Aucoin helped out on one play and turned it into a PPG for instead of a SHG, but they did score one SHG against Hershey. Like the team, not a good third period for Holtby.
Charlotte had the second most goals scored this season in the AHL and has speedy/talented forwards, including Bowman who finished the season with Carolina; the issues for Charlotte are on D and getting to Pogge.
French’s post-game comments were terse/brief and he wasn’t saying much other than Hershey changed the way they played in the third period (not in a good way.)
For the most part, the vets played like vets from what I have heard and could tell, but I only listened/didn’t watch last night.
Time to regroup with game 2 on Sunday.
P. McNeill, Orlov, Souray, Wellar, Fahey, and Oreskovic were the defensemen last night for the Bears.
Compare that to P. McNeill, Alzner, Carlson, Helmer, Amadio, and Wellar…the defensemen who dressed for the Bear’s Calder-clinching win over Texas last spring.
Think a year makes a difference?

Obviously, not easy to replace Carlson and Alzner, but the Hershey team still has a mix of AHL vets, NHL prospects both on D and at forward. One issue with the D is Orlov’s inexperience and Oreskovic playing. I assume Kroll will play next game; not sure if Miskovic is hurt.
McNeill and Wellar are still there. Fahey, IMO, hasn’t been playing as well of late as he did earlier this season, but he has the ability at the AHL level. Souray is Souray.

That’s not a joke at all. Especially with an open wound. I know the NHL probably takes care of their equipment better than anyone else, but there are still nasty bacteria and fungi that can grow in there. I don’t think they’d put it on his leg if they had any concern about infection.

There was some player about five years ago who got an abrasion from tying his skates, then got a really terrible staph infection on his finger and was out for like a month or so. I want to say he was European and played for the Sens, but his name escapes me.

Wideman Vs Kaberle
After watching Kaberle last night, and since he joined the Bruins, it’s hard to not feel like Wideman was the steal of the trade deadline for a puck moving defenceman. GMGM did well.

I didn’t see it mentioned in the Clips, but BB was on one of the radio shows on Sirius’ NHL Radio yesterday talking about the crowd at Verizon, and the fan base. He mentioned that he’d never heard it as loud at Verizon Center has it was on Wednesday. I’d have to agree. At times it was deafeningly loud on Wednesday night.

No question but the last five minutes of game 7 against the Rangers two years ago. (My ears are still ringing from the recollection). But yes I think the first period of game 1 this time around, especially at the beginning, and then the OT winner were incredibly loud.

That was insane. And I watched the last minute of OT on Gamecenter yesterday and noticed that you can barely hear Joe B yelling after Sasha scored the GWG. It was really loud in there at times.
Brads also said on the postgame show that Sturm was saying on the bench that he couldn’t hear guys next to him. And Brads added that he thinks VC is the loudest building in the NHL…but I think he’s just buttering us up, he probably says that to all the fans ;)

Carlyle almost has no choice but to start Emery after that “showing” Dan Ellis gave, and Emery’s still kind of hurt. If the Preds can pot one or two early, you’re right, we could be in for a short series, b/c it’s pretty clear Rinne’s not going to budge.
The interesting part about game one was that Jonathon Blum, Kevin Klein, and Mike Fisher took on the RPG line most times and the results speak for themselves. Fisher had three points in addition to holding down Getzlaf. If the Preds can do that without using Weber/Suter/Legwand on RPG, I’m hopeful.

If he was a good penalty killer, had some scoring skill, and was just an overly aggressive player, he’d be great.
He’d be an average 4th liner that could step up to 4. He’d be like Matt Bradley. His specific value that gets him that contract and the place on those teams is playing like a scumbag. Like it or lump it, there are a lot of NHL GMs that still value that stuff.

Especially at his salary… $5.325m.
If he’s going to stay a 40-50 goal/100 point level for several seasons, then, yeah, he’s a bargain. But if this year is an anomaly and he reverts back to his previous highs of 32/76, then he’s overpaid. I’m holding judgement on his greatness until I see him repeat those kind of numbers or get somewhere close to them. Jonathon Cheechoo scored 50 if I recall.
Considering the market, even if he reverts, I wouldn’t call him overpaid. Semin, Horcoff, Kessel, Cammalleri, Elias, Smyth, Kane, Briere, Kovalchuk, Spezza, Gomez, Gaborik and Heatley all make more than Perry, and I’d take Perry over every one of them.
He’s right in the ballpark of Hossa and St. Louis (and others who are not as good as Perry). I’d say that’s a fair deal if he reverts back down to ~80 and doesn’t maintain this higher pace. Especially considering he brings more than his points.

Reverts back to 32/76 with 100+PIMs, kills penalties, fights, agitates, is a proven leader within the locker room and does it all against really tough competition with crappy zonestarts?
Yeah, he’s not even CLOSE to overpaid, even at 32/76.

Except that PIMs hurt your team. It’s not good to be in the box for 100+ minutes. What you should be focusing on is his penalty differential.

Meh. Perry takes his share of dumb penalties, but I think in his case he takes a lot because he’s legitimately a pain in the ass to play against.
Matt Hendricks is a honey badger.
Right, I’m just pointing out one of my pet peeves (as you well know), the idea that penalties are actually a good thing. The vast majority of them are bad, fightings are neutral. So subtract Perry’s fighting majors, then take the rest and I’d bet 10% is a generous allowance for “good penalties.” That means 80% of his non-fighting penalties hurt his team.
Where it gets murky is evaluating how those penalties end up paying off by drawing more PPs later on, which is why I suggested pure penalty differential.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
You can say this for Perry’s fights: he at least takes on guys who have significant value to their teams.
Over the last six years, he’s fought the following:
Pavel Datsyuk
Wayne Simmonds
David Backes
Alex Burrows
Chuck Kobasew
Brian Rafalski
Brent Burns
Rafalski and Burns were in the postseason, too.
Tortorella: Can I get another question? I went in here in a pretty good mood today, too.
Larry Brooks: So did I.
Tortorella: Well, you obviously f***ed that up, didn't you?
Rafalski was one of the biggest punk moves I’ve ever witnessed. It wasn’t even a fight, it was a mugging. Game was over, well decided, Rafalski was on his first game back from a shoulder injury. Perry sees a scrum break out and bee-lines for Rafalski and immediately starts trying to beat on the injured shoulder. What a fucking gutless piece of crap.
Unlike Cooke though, he’s got so much skill that the game would be losing something if he was banished to the gulags.

Yeah, I guess, but it really backfired because now he’s got more of a target on him than he did originally. The entire team talked about protecting Rinne before the series started and as Klein demonstrated, they’re willing to take a penalty in order to do so.

When the lights dimmed for the intro the entire place exploded like a crowd at a rock concert when the band makes its way onto the stage. The last time I heard it that loud before the game started was Penguins game seven two years ago.
It started to dull during OT as the crowd lost its alcohol fuel with concessions cut off and kids started to fall asleep. Once Semin scored everyone went nuts.
I thought the crowd was deafening silent in the 3rd period between the Rangers goal and the Caps goal. Very disappointing

I realized mid third period that I had stopped responding to Horn Guy. I was too concentrated on the game to even notice it.
Just in comparison to the first period and overtime. There were fewer scoring chances and fewer things to get excited about. And I agree with dcsportsfan1 that everyone was very nervous. Lots of short tempers in my section, security got called to haul two guys out who were screaming at each other in 121, that usually never happens in my section. A fight almost broke out behind me too between some guys who were standing and some guys who were irritated by it.

I might flop the bottom pairs. Wideman/Schultz as the third pair to manage Wideman’s minutes.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
That was my reaction to those lines as well. I’d prefer to see Hannan out there more than Schultz.
Matt Bradley: He has sensitive skin, no?
I agree with FandB’s post about managing Wideman’s minutes initially, but once Wideman is back in full I’d like to see them roll the defensive lines and manage EVERYONE’s minutes. Really take advantage of the incredible defensive depth this team has and keep all 6 well rested for a deep run. Those three lines are very similar to each other and I don’t think there’s much of a drop off no matter which is on the ice at any given time.

At least early on in his recovery, I’d prefer to see the team run with 7 defensemen. Wideman on the PP and out there for a few shifts per period is more valuable, IMO, than Chimera or Hendricks or Bradley in the playoffs, when OT could last forever.
If they use 6 D, I’d like to see Brooks Laich getting a lot of practice time at D. I don’t trust these guys to be able to jump back in and play a full game.

A couple notes from yesterday’s practice (my first time at Kettler!)
-Erskine scored two beautiful goals on Varly from the tops of the circles (One 5-hole, one high blocker side). Who knew he could do such things? I know the coaches wouldn’t let him do that in a game, because if he’s that far deep he can’t back up fast enough, but it showed he has some secret talents.
D.J. King is a very, very scary man. He checked Mike Green into the boards right in front of my face and they both had big grins on their face knowing that if King was really trying, Greener would be a pancake.
-Bob Woods and Dean Eveason can actually still play hockey. I’m sure those of you who have been to practice before know this, but I was blown away by the talent they still have.
-Carlson gets really excited for goals in practice, even when the goalie was not looking/ doing something else.

Serious Conspiracy Theory Here
Did anyone else see this? I was reading one of the Rangers Banter Links up top and saw this in the comments. I’ll look up which one it was. Pretty funny though. I thought I had read some strange ones before…
I watched the game on DVR today and I noticed that every time a Caps player shoots the puck at Lundquist, there is a series of very bright flashes that turn the whole TV screen white for a split second. You will especially notice it when you go frame by frame on the DVR. And on Semin’s winning goal, there were two very very bright flashes that could have temporarily messed with Henrik’s vision. I know that there are photographic flashes at all professional sporting events but these seemed excessive. Any chance the Caps and their ownership are creating the bright flashes to throw off Lundquist? Consequently, there are no bright flashes when the Rangers shoot the puck at the net—just normal photographic flashbulbs. Conspiracy?

The pros get to set up remotely triggered strobes, not all of have them since there is limited space/power but usually the SI guys or any “name” photographers will have a set up. From what I’ve heard it’s usually the choice of the venue who actually gets to place strobes.
They even have remotely triggered cameras up in the rafters, that’s how they get the top down shots, there isn’t actually a person sitting up there the whole game. And now I am done straying off topic.
I personally think this is a useful conversation as it increases my knowledge on the media coverage of the game, but I’ll defer to the powers that be.

Life With Spidey -- a blog about sports, travel, work, family and fun.
Representing Caps fandom in the Gateway to the West.
Pretty much, you attach a radio receiver to the camera in the rafters, and you trigger it with what basically amounts to a remote control from where you are down courtside/rinkside. To trigger the strobes you have a radio transmitter that is attached to the hot shoe of your camera and the strobes in the rafters all receive a signal that causes them to fire. You can also set it up so that when you shoot off your courtside camera it fires the overhead camera at the same time so you get multiple angles of the same shot.

Usually they are triggered by one of the following: RF signal, infrared, cable, or even off the strobe light of the “master” flash. I’m not familiar with the model being used here, but because of the distance and mobility required, I would assume it’s an RF trigger.

There are flashes all the time in big games… it’s called people taking photographs. Also they light up the TV camera lens way more than they would distract a player.
Damn, our complicated and (seemingly) surreptitious system of small flash cameras and shiny mirrors has been detected. Hopefully no pat-downs for laser pointers at VC tonight.

Noticed this at Cuse/G'town game's played at VC
And not to get OT, but a group of us had noticed during SU’s free throws, that the lighting ring that goes around the arena is lit up with ads, random lights, etc.
This was not the case during the hoyas free throws. And it was not an isolated incident.
I don’t buy into conspiracy theories, but sometimes I do.
Is the commenters last name Zapruder?
“Watch Lundquist head go back and to the left, back and to the left…If Semin’s shot came from the slot, why would Henrik’s head snap back and to the left….there must have been a second shooter.”
Pretty good theory, except for the fact that neither Lundquist, Tortorella or any other Ranger mentioned it at all.
Also, there are no photographic flashes at sporting events, at least not from the professional photogs. The “flashes” this guy is seeing have to do with the frame speed at which the game is being broadcast. You do notice it when there are slow motion replays sometimes. It’s certainly not in the building.

I don’t want to be rude, but you are wrong dcsportsfan1, pretty much every arena has strobes set up that are fired by a radio transmitter from a professional photographers camera, it’s the only way to “freeze” the action with the light levels that are available on the playing surface. You also have to think about the direction the flash is moving at / point towards. A camera’s flash point a little too high would be picked up and cause that white out effect for a video camera.
But for goalies I really don’t see how a flash could effect them coming from rink side, which would be closer than the rafter flashes, since cameramen can only be so far away for a shot they don’t typically sit behind one net taking photos of the net at the other end of the rink. So when you think that most, if not all, flashes are coming from angles to the goalie and their eyes sit back in the mask it severely lessens the angle a flash would of to come from for a camera flash to actually make it into a goalie’s eyes and affect him.
I’m just going by logic here, inorite, but even with a very powerful flash the outside factors of placement and angles involved would negate any affect most of the time.

Seems to me that if you wanted to get hockey fans’ attention, you’d be closer to the arena, closer to game time. I mean, Washington may be a hockey town (roll with me here), but you’re going to get people heading in and out of town and government types by Union Station.

New clip midday (sorry if up higher) - Article on Matt Hendricks for Sunday’s Post. It’s about him, but also about the nature of fighting in the NHL.
Money quotes:
“Once the fight starts, I seem to go blank," [Hendricks] says. "Sometimes, I need to actually watch the fight just to remember what happened. I think it’s almost like I’m blacking out and just doing what you do."
Kim Hendricks, Matt’s wife, says her husband’s methodical preparations are an extension of his personality. "He’ll come home before a game and go to the computer and study the other guys. He doesn’t go out there just to beat someone up. He waits for the right guy and just the right point in the game."

I also liked her quote about how she’s used to his fighting but that people in public stare. I’ve always wondered about people’s reaction when they see someone like Hendy or Erskine after a fight. Caps fans would recognize them, but non fans probably have to wonder what they did. Even with someone like Knuble, who never fights, but is seriously dinged up after so many years in the league, I wonder what people who don’t know who he is think when they see the scars.

Bradley’s wife must be interrogated by the police daily the way he looks. I sort of wonder about his kid, or Oisk’s kids, seeing that. It must be difficult to explain how getting punched in the face is part of their job to a young(er) kid. Doesn’t Hendricks have a kid too?

I think he has a young kid. I read the article about Alzner going to the elementary school, and being asked whether he fights. He said something along the lines of “I don’t recommend it, but I will if I have to,” which probably made the teacher cringe a little.
I can’t explain the dichotomy between fighting in hockey to solve conflict (allowed) and fighting in real life to solve conflict (not a good idea and is also called assault).
I mean, is it because in hockey it’s somewhat controllable, there are rules, and players have to agree? It’s like challenging someone to a duel versus just walking away really quickly and then pulling a gun. I mean, it definitely falls into contradicting “practice what you preach” and I have no idea how they explain to their kids why they do what they do.
if anything, though, I kind of felt bad when I read the Hendricks profile. I certainly I don’t think there’s ever a time in which he needs to fight. The only thing that makes it more of a “gentleman’s duel” instead of an all out brawl (most of the time) is that there are rules and etiquette. It’s part of the game. Teams use it as a strategy.

The fights that happen for a reason, whether after a dirty hit, or even a hard clean hit, or out of frustration, are kind of a natural progression in a game where players are passionate, there is a high intensity level, lots of speed, and lots of physicality.
The fights between guys who are really only on the roster to fight are basically a sideshow for a certain segment of the fan base. Think of them as the in-game equivalent of the burrito toss.

Hahahaha..that’s actually a really good way of putting it. FTR, I can’t even put Hendy in an “enforcer” category. He’s a tough guy, and he’s definitely one of the fighters on the team, but he brings so much talent to the team that fighting doesn’t define him as a player. I’m not a fan of guys who are on the roster simply because they can fight; if fights come about organically, I can accept it, but there’s no sense in having a guy whose only real purpose is to fight. Then his paycheck is based on bloodying the other guy and not about playing hockey.

There’s a cut-off in fighting in real life when it’s ok. I was just having this discussion last night about how when I was 21-24 or so, I’d throw down for just about any reason. I even lamented that I wish I had a chance that my friend did to throw down because some guy was winging gay slurs at a gay guy. Now, even if slurs were getting thrown I can’t reasonably get in a fight — that cutoff is like 25-26ish, when you have enough maturity/enough going on in your life that you can face jail time and that’s dissuasion enough.
All in all I’m a big fan of fighting, some of my best friends in school I had were people I had fought. At the same time, that was then and this is now. Things are so much different that stuff like that just doesn’t fly.

Per Helene Elliott, Stoll has a phone hearing at 2pm ET for the White hit. I’ll be interested to see how he fares in the system during the playoffs, given this year’s emphasis on head shots. 1 game?
Dingos are involved. Best not to ask.
It depends…I haven’t seen this information, but is White hurt? That could swing the vote. Also, it being the playoffs, I’m sure the league wants to be careful about its rulings, but this was a pretty bad hit. I cringed at one of the camera angles that showed White’s face as Stoll pushed him into the boards. He was in a lot of pain.

Everybody see that Datsyuk beat Ovie to win the Kharlamov Trophy this year, ending 8’s run of five straight?
More interesting is the fact that Jizz voted for Datsyuk. Seriously. LINK
“I simply like the way he plays,” Alexander Semin of the Washington Capitals said, to explain his decision to pick Datsyuk
"You do that you go to the box, you know. Two minutes by yourself and you feel shame, you know. And then you get free."
That doesn’t surprise me at all. It’s no secret that style points count to Semin; if he’s gonna score, it needs to be that money shot.

Seems like it was a one vote difference, so Semin voting for OV may have ended it in a tie. Hopefully that doesn’t create a rift between those two.

Both Ovie and Semin voted for each other in second place. First place vote is worth 3 points, second place is 2 points, third place is 1 point. Semin actually has a better history of voting for Ovie:
2010
Ovie voted: 1.Bryzgalov, 2.Semin, 3.Kovalchuk.

2009
Ovechkin voted for: (1)Nabokov; (2)Malkin; (3)Kovalchuk
Semin voted: (1)Ovechkin; (2)Datsyuk; (3)Kovalchuk
2008
Semin: 1. Ovechkin 2. Kovalev 3. Datsyuk
Ovechkin: 1. Nabokov 2. Malkin 3. Kovalchuk
Any chance we can see Datsyuk’s votes?

I think voting for yourself just isn’t done. I have the full 2008 and 2009 votes and no one voted for themselves. For 2010, I only know two guys’ votes (Ovie and Nabokov) beyond the total numbers for the #1 place vote, and neither of them voted for themselves. Nabokov voted straight goalie ticket in 2010: 1. Varlamov, 2.Bryzgalov, 3. Khabibulin

Semin on why he didn’t vote for Ovi:
What’s so special about [Ovechkin]? I don’t see anything special there. Yes, he does skate well, has a good head, good pass. But there’s nothing else. Even if you compare him to Patrick Kane from Chicago … [Kane] is a much more interesting player. The way he moves, his deking abilities, his thinking on the ice and his anticipation of the play is so superb.
I think that if you take any player, even if he is “dead wood,” and start promoting him, you’ll get a star. Especially if he scores 100 points. No one is going to care about anyone else. No one is going to care whether he possesses great skill. Let’s say you put someone in front of the net and let him deflect pucks in, and he scored 50 goals; everyone will say “Wow!” and then hand him a $10 million per year contract. That’s what they like here.
And in Russia people like beautiful hockey, and not dump and chase. I just don’t get it, why when a player is skating up the ice and no one is attacking him, he dumps the puck into the offensive zone and then chases it? Why would you do this if there is no one forechecking you? I understand that if there is someone coming at you and you don’t know whether you can get past that player, then you can dump the puck, pass it or shoot. But if not, then hold on to the puck, skate forward, create a chance.
Why would you want to dump the puck and then chase after it and crash into the boards? I don’t know. But that’s just my opinion.

I can’t find the post about Caps’ blown 2-0 series leads, but if we take a 2-0 lead tonight I’ll be feeling pretty damn good about things. Let’s think about this rationally. Teams that take a 2-0 lead historically win 87.3% of the time. Why would the same percentages not apply to this Caps team? Because they blew a bunch of series leads to superior teams in the 90’s?
No, if we win tonight, the Rangers are in deep shit.

If the Caps take a commanding series lead, (3-0 or 3-1), does it make sense to start Varly in goal for a game?

At least once tonight, Avery will get to the net and give Neuvy a nudge (spear?) after the whistle. No call, but a scrum will ensue. One of our defensemen will get in his face, and Avery will dive to the ice like the little fucking weasel he is. A cap will go off for roughing, NYR will get a power play, and the announcers will commend Avery for being such an effective pest.
Man do I hate that guy.

Seeing the results and highlights of last night’s EC games made me quite confident about the Caps. Boston and Philly got Halaked. Not just in that they were shut out, but that they were just choked off from having any offensive potency.
I think the Caps have the offensive grit and talent to defeat these defensive walls. Alex Ovechkin, Mike Green, Nick Backstrom, and Alex Semin are marksmen capable of firing impossible-to-stop shots to an area with twine behind it with consistency (whether or not they will is another question), as opposed to sending puck after puck into the Habs or Sabres crest. The highlights of the Bs-Habs game showed Boston firing some real howitzers at Price. The Caps not only can fire howitzers, but bullets.
It will be interesting to see how the Caps play with a lead when they achieve one. I’m quite optimistic.
What a joke. I hope he’s right, but this seems like he’s going for a jinx or something. If the Caps lose tonight, all the pressure is back on them and the Lamberts of the world will be sharpening their knives again. I’m happy the way they played in game 1, but as the comments point out (can’t believe I’m agreeing with PD comments), they almost lost in a shutout.
