Yeah, that’s my reservation, too. Since there’s no bonus cushion next year, signing guys like Knuble to one-year contracts got significantly less attractive, since any bonuses you put in the contract count against the cap, regardless.
That being said, if his play seriously regresses next year, the Caps can send him to Hershey for cap relief. Which would be sad, but hey, it’s a business.
On the plus side, he likely gets game 1000 in a Caps uniform.
35+ contracts count even if he’s in Hershey, correct?

I don’t see how it’s much more than a $100-200k bump honestly. But yeah, appropriate exclamation forthcoming.

Speaking of Brads, what are his chances of sticking around beyond this season? Seems to me he’s been replaced by Hendricks.
I love Brads, but I think its unlikely he’ll be brought back.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

Hey, he may be one of the few good guys and is aware that he’s running out of time on his professional career and is willing to make a selfless gesture on his last deal (coming off a contract where he averaged 25 goals a year over 2), I’d be happy to be wrong.

I like this. I was hoping we would have Arnott and Hannan for next year too. It will be interesting to see how GMGM works the cap. I guess it depends on how late in the year the Caps are playing..

Now that Knuble has re-signed, I don’t see how Arnott can use age to justify retirement. Now that Lemaire has left NJ, I don’t know whether Arnott would like to return to NJ and work with a new coach and a new system. I hope he and Hannan have found a home here and would want to stay.

Not sure I want Arnott back either. Like what he’s done here so far, but I can’t see him being extremely productive over an entire season. Hockey’s a young man’s game.

I will hold back my opinion on Arnott untill the playoffs are over. I want guys like Arnott and Knuble for a run. Like JP said somewhere, if 22 and 44 signed back up I wouldnt mind if they conveniently went LTIR for a couple months.

I agree with JP about withholding judgment till I hear the dollars, but initially my thoughts are that while I love Knuble, I’m just not sure giving another year to a guy who looked his age frequently this year, especially early on, is a good idea.

Not as the season wore on, though.
I mean, I’ll welcome him back with open arms at $1.5m, and if he ahem breaks a finger and misses 25 games next December and January… maybe all the better.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Building on that, we’ve frequently talked about how guys like Knuble are compliments, and not drivers. When the drivers on the team looked disinterested, Knuble looked old. Lately our stars have been stars, and whaddyaknow, Knuble is once again a 20 goal scorer and seems to have “found” his net presence again.

I know he stepped it up, which is why I qualified it with “especially early on”. But I’m not sure I would want to give a deal to a guy who’s pushing 40 and only plays half the season. I guess I should be thankful it’s the “good half” of the season.

I hear the total salary is for 6 million. But they break it down by each month of the season

This new and revolutionary contract will adjust Knuble’s salary cap to a mere 750k.

Also, this seems to me to be a result of the complete failure of Eric Fehr to step up his game. I assumed that Knuble’s second year would be the year he was gently pushed out in favor of Fehr, but he just hasn’t taken on that role yet.

How many years do you give the guy? This is his third full season as a regular, and his career high in GP is 69. It’s never good that a guy is fragile, but if he’s 25 going on 26 and fragile, that’s a problem.

I’ll give him this year and, depending, maybe next year, too. Hell, he’s literally 10 days older than AO, and a lot of players don’t hit potential until their primes, which he’s just about to enter. We know he’s got the tools. I’m okay with giving him a little more time to bring it all together, especially if we can keep him on the 2nd and 3rd lines until he does.
by DrinkingPartner on Apr 11, 2011 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions
True, but how many guys his age have had as many shoulder problems as he’s had? I really like his potential and I’m all for giving him another year, but I’m worried I’ll be saying the same thing next year after he misses half the season with another injury.

Sounds reasonable to me. I’m a little like GMGM in that I tend to hang on too long waiting for “potential.” I would probably kick the Fehr can down the street way to long waiting for him to put together a healthy season and was curious when the cut off was for everyone else.
by HockeyGoalie29 on Apr 11, 2011 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions
A broken finger sustained from a head-first dive into the net last year and a broken jaw due to a shot from Fehr aren’t injuries that I think would classify him as fragile.

There’s also the Johansson factor. He and Knuble have looked great playing together. If MoJo can be the 2C 28-90-22 has the potential to be a killer 2nd line. If Knuble was willing to sign at a discount, he makes for cheap insurance if Brooksie walks for dollars elsewhere.

I’d balk at a 4+ year deal, and he shouldn’t be getting a whole lot more than he’s currently making. I highly doubt that he’ll ever hit the numbers he had last year, again, and we already know he’s not an ideal 2nd liner, let alone 1st liner.

err what?
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
Laich is an decent-to-good 2nd liner and has some chemistry with Semin, but he’s ultimately replaceable. He’s a much better 3rd liner, but an expensive one to boot.
by DrinkingPartner on Apr 11, 2011 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree he is replaceable but it makes me nervous to think who would play on the 2nd. I don’t think Fehr can, nor any of the Hershey guys. The best possible prospect Kuz, whos apparently a natural wing, is still a few years out from NHL if he can make it there.
I think what drives his price up is how much he is willing and capable to do. Net presence, power play, penalty kill, face offs, media quote generator. If the caps don’t resign him, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a team put closer to or over 4 mil up for grabs.

I don’t follow..he’s done quite well on the second line this year. Let’s not forget that almost everyone’s numbers are down this year.
by redpezrocket on Apr 11, 2011 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions
It was discussed during the slump, but the idea is that Laich can’t drive the 2nd line. He’s a complementary piece there.
This sig is brought to you by... Frungy, The Sport of Kings!
While true he does make for a great complimentary piece.
Even this year his 48 points this season are possibly above 2nd line average. You look at other teams, like Van, and after the sedin’s the next scorer is 48 point Alex Burrows with the next guy down dropping nearly 10 points. But averaging around 50 points on the 2nd line and then additional points on the PP is great numbers for that slot.
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
Doesn’t he play on the same line as the Sedins? there is a 3rd forward who plays with them right, right?
Kessler is a 1st liner, if he’s not in Van its because he gets the Sasha treatment to roll 2 scoring lines.
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."

Same here. But (and I feel a bit like movie trailer guy here) “in a world where Colby Armstrong has a three-million-dollar cap hit…” there’s no way we’re resigning Laich for less than 3.5.
Certainly he could get more money (or term even), but it’s up to him if he wants to play for the Caps or for the Edmonton Oilers.
When he looks back on his life after hockey, will it have mattered, really?

I’d offer Laich more term than dollars. He’s proven to stay healthy, and if giving him a 5 year deal will drop his cap hit, I’d definitely do that. Maybe something like 3.5-3.75MM a year for 5 years?

My first offer to him would be 3.2 for 3 years and then go from there in negotiations. If he resigns for under 3.5 it will be a great contract for he organization.

Yup. I’ve seen speculation of a 3-5% increase based on revenues (i.e., not the escalator, which if I’m not mistaken the players did not trigger this year). It’s been a good year for the NHL.
Makes this deal look even better. It’s more like 1.9 Million in 10-11 season-adjusted dollars.

I linked to a piece by Brooks yesterday with some numbers in it, fwiw. I’m not a fan of much of Brooks stuff but for the basic numbers and range it had the info. in it.
I took a different approach and went with in terms of how things look relative to the cap:
Semin, 1 year contract, +700,000 cap hit
Knuble, 1 year contract, -800,000 cap hit
As far as the contract, in a year where performance bonuses on a 1 year 35+ contract have a lot less value, this is about what I expected. I hoped it might come in a little lower, but that was simply a hope. For reference purposes, I believe Recchi’s cap hit (including perf bonuses) is 1.9M this season.
Gave Alzner Schultz-money, gave Varly Neuvy-money, and gave MP85 no raise. $4.4 left on a cap of $59.4, with three forward spots to fill and Laich, Gordo, Bradley, Sturm, Arnott and Hannan unsigned, and Beagle in Hershey.
Who moves? King, Sloan, Poti?

I’d send Sloan to Hershey. It’s apparent he’s not worth the cap hit and roster spot. I’d get rid of King, but doubt GMGM will. I’d try to move Poti, but don’t see who there are any takers. I’d try to re-sign Hannan before any of the Fs, I’m just not sure it’s possible anymore.

With you 100 percent. Would love to have Hannan back but it’s only going to happen if GMGM eats the big mistake contract extension he gave to Poti.
I think its completely sound that Hannan will take a huge salary cut, no matter where he goes, so you can look to his cap coming down to 2-3 mil imo.

Why does GMGM like doing extensions during the middle of the season? I think a wait and see what happens during the only time of year that really matters for this team approach would be better suited considering recent history.
Ah, beer. The cause of and the solution to all of life’s problems. - Homer Simpson
I think they like to spread out the deals. If the Caps go far in the playoffs, everyone gets considerably more expensive and potentially unsignable. Knuble’s on a hot streak and since he is a momentum player, doing this deal right before playoff time shows that GMGM has confidence that it will continue (which means 1) it would be harder to afford him later, and 2) this extra shot of confidence might give the player a mental edge as well.) Extending a guy like Knuble who is older and who also has to sacrifice his body to do his net-crashing means that he won’t have the nagging thought in the back of his mind to go easier and save his body for the next contract. If he gets injured, he still has a salary next year. (I only reference this b/c of his comment re OV about learning to pick his battles and hits.)
If the Caps go far in the playoffs, everyone gets considerably more expensive and potentially unsignable.
Which is why I was desperately hoping to get Alzner signed before the playoffs.
I wouldn’t worry too much about Alzner this season. If I’m not mistaken, he’s not arbitration eligible. It would take an offer sheet from another team to cause any real contract problems, and he’s not the kind of player who has received that kind of offer sheet in the past. Doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but history’s on our side (for now).

For some players, it adds peace of mind. A player like Hendricks, who has had to fight significantly harder to get to a permanent spot, benefits from knowing that management has faith in him and enough to sign him to a one-way deal. I imagine this could be a similar situation for Erskine. They both have families to worry about.

Like the move at 2 mil. Caps don’t have a cheaper replacement option. Certainly his age could be an issue. You never know when the skills are going to erode, but with a guy like Knuble whose worth isn’t tied to his skating or amazing passing/shooting skills I think a this deal has little downside.

How much gas does he have left in the tank? It’s a decent signing but I’m pretty nervous about his ability to last another season. His slow starts seem to lengthen by two months every year.
also, this will (likely) allow Knuble to reach 1,000 games played while wearing a Caps sweater, something he told the lovely Hockey Diaries folks he wanted to do. He only needs 32 to reach that mark next season.

"You get to a certain point in your life and things are not necessarily about dollars and cents all the time," Knuble said. "Other things are important to you and your family. So I’m lucky I’ll still be able to take advantage of that and have some say where I’m playing, where we live, where our kids go to school. I’m thrilled about it."
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
He’s also in a (relatively) unique position compared to the other guys we’ve discussed, Semin and Laich. They are looking for their big payday, Knuble has already made his money and settled down.
First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!
a couple more Knuble quotes via CI:
"I’ll be 39 years old next year and I’ll still have a chance to play this game and play in Washington, and I’ll always be thankful for that," Knuble said. "It’s something I wasn’t ready to give up yet."
"It’s a point in my life where you don’t need to be out chasing things," Knuble said. "If you’re in a good spot and feel like you have a chance, the team has a chance to win and contend, that’s a very important thing for you and your family to stay in that spot."
and from bruce:
"He’s like fine wine, I guess: He just keeps getting better and the last half of the year he’s been arguably our best player," Coach Bruce Boudreau said. "If you look, I think, his minutes has increased, year after year. [There’s no] fatigue, he’s in great shape, he’s a consummate professional and we’re a lucky group to have him for another year."

Atta dinnin stick a who!
I’m fine with it at $2 Mil. A bit of savings for us and he’s shown he still has gas left in the tank. When I first read about it today I wondered about the timing, but given all his talk of wanting to play his 1,000th game as a Cap it was going to get done at some point if he wanted to come back. Perfectly fine with this.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.
"I think we’re a different team than we were a year ago. We’re a better team, we’re more experienced, we have some more veteran guys in our lineup," veteran winger Mike Knuble said. "I’m looking forward to seeing how we’re gonna do. I don’t think it’s gonna be cross your fingers and hope for the best; I think we’re gonna be very methodical and very hard to play against."
-Mike Knuble on the playoffs.

This makes me hopeful. I want to see the Caps do what they have been able to in dominant fashion at times this year: get the puck down low and cycle it to create scoring chances. If everyone buys in, the other team has to work every defensive possession, creating penalties and wearing them down over the course of the series. You can be sure the Rags have that gameplan.
We respect and appreciate him for what he does in the opponent’s goal crease, but he stole our hearts when he did this behind the goal.
"I remembered when he said that and I kind of looked at him during the warm up and told myself that I got to shut these guys out tonight." - Michal Neuvirth, 02.06.11.

That’s one of my favorite Knuble moments too.

I was right above that play, watching in awe. Absolutely incredible.
Matt Bradley: He has sensitive skin, no?
It really was. Of course the big story after that game was Ovi getting hurt, Knuble was a beast. I remember afterwards the Jumbotron showing him on the bench and the place when crazy.

We were above the play too but up high. Just breathtaking dominance. Boy was the place rocking.
