Boston was one of the big winners at the trading deadline. And just like that they went on a six- game winning streak. They managed to win all six games on their recent road trip. The last time they did that was in 1972, the year they went on to win the Stanley Cup with players like Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito.
I remember when we in Washington did the same thing. It started with a big celebration on one flight. I myself have been through to win six games in a row away from home.
I remember we lost a home game right before a we set off on the long flight to Vancouver.
The party lasted the whole plane ride across the continent. Our General Manager ordered all of us to party. Nobody was allowed to sleep, everybody had to stay awake. The thing was that we had the next day off. The party worked as a bonding exercise after a rough patch.
Everybody was in a good mood and we won the first game.
After that we all started to talk, as if the party was the thing that got us on the right track again, but obviously that wasn’t the only reason. But it did make us stronger and made us all pull in the same direction again. And we managed to hold on to that feeling for the rest of the trip. Still to this day that trip is something we talk about when we meet.
At the moment I am back in Washington for a visit. The feeling surrounding this year’s team is okay. They want to be a team with speed, but they feel like they are a bit slow.
A problem for Washington is that they are bad with the puck in their own zone. The defense creates scoring opportunities for the opponents, when they don’t have good enough puck control and can’t get out of the d-zone in the right way. Therefore, it was good that they got Dennis Wideman at the trading deadline. I have followed him since juniors. He doesn’t dominate, but damn if he doesn’t do everything right. It goes a long way and will provide stability in defense. And the goalkeeper Michal Neuvirth is fantastic right now.
Nicklas Bäckström played with a broken thumb, yet he has not missed a practice. It shows that he’s an extremely determined individual. They love him here. Marcus Johansson is also extremely popular over here. I’ve seen two games since I came over, and Marcus has been the most consistently good player on the team.
