Not only is defenceman Dennis Wideman not in the lineup tonight for the Washington Capitals, there’s no telling when he might return.
Wideman is currently in a Washington hospital with a significant leg hematoma as a result of a hit Tuesday by Carolina’s Tuomo Ruutu.
A hematoma is caused by a contusion where blood escapes or leaks from an artery, vein or capillary into soft tissue, such as a muscle, where it does not belong.
It can cause significant swelling and pressure, which often times can only be released by making an incision to drain the blood from the soft tissue.
Sources tell TSN that is precisely the situation in which Wideman now finds himself. While no one knows exactly when, or if, he might return to the Caps lineup, it’s more likely to be classified as out indefinitely as opposed to day-to-day.
That could be a significant loss for the Caps, who are, for now anyway, also without top defenceman Mike Green as well as veteran Tom Poti.

I saw Barcelona at the show the same day I saw David O Russell’s debut Spanking the Monkey and have fond memories of them both. I thought it was a worthy follow up and though Nichole and Eigeman were excellent. Like you I don’t think it is as sharp as Metropolitan. Last Days of Disco is likely my least favourite of the three. I found it a tad too pat and predictable, and teh dialogue not as sharp. That said, I mourn the fact he hasn’t made a movie since. I love good dialogue and miss Stillman’s writing on the big screen.

A mix of both. The 2nd one is all Neuvy in my mind. The poor rebound control was much more worrying overall. Varly by contrast last night was lights out save for that really soft goal that tied it and in the shootout (which is irrelevant to me come playoffs).

Even with Erskine, we have a glaring hole in our defence. It just fucking sucks. Having Green and Wideman would make this defense one of the best in the league.
Without them, we’ve got a defensive tandem that can just get abused by other teams. If we dont have Erskine? We’re screwed.

Carlznerson is fine, Hannan/Schultz can be solid, Erskine/Sloan would be painful but hopefully we could protect them until a guy was ready to come back

I have no problem with Calznerson and Hannah/Schultz. Those are good tandems. Having a third pairing that hurts more than helps is never good. We would need to give the other 4 increased minutes and protect the bottom 2. Not good at all.

The thing with Erskine is if we could pair him with another guy who isn’t Sloan, he can hold his own just fine as a 6D. When you have to pair him with Sloan though it becomes problematic.

If the hematoma bleeds into a joint (and if it’s a larger blood vessel), it can cause long term problems. If DW’s is mid-thigh, it should clear up without stressing the joint.

Pitt’s won most of their recent games in SO – that won’t happen in the playoffs. It will mainly depend on the goalies – especially Fleury.

this is a good point. Timmy have you been watching their games? Does it look like they’re just sitting back and trying to lock it down and hope for breakdowns?
I’ve seen parts of recent games, and their offense is struggling. They’ve been playing a tight defense, and Fleury’s been pretty good. If he plays at his best in the playoffs, I think Tampa will lose. However, if Crosby comes back, things will change. There’s been a lot of discussion over this recently, and that’s the one big question mark.
