The Washington Capitals are squandering their first two PP opportunities of the game.
It is no secret this PP unit is broken. They are getting fewer power play opportunities (3.2 per game this year down from 3.8 per game last year) and are doing less with them.
Part of the problem is they are way worse converting on their first two PP opportunities of the game than they were last year.

Shots directed at net (PP SF/Opp) are slightly higher during the first and second PP opportunities but the results have been way worse.

I don't have scoring chance info from last year, but instead I will plot where the shots on goal for the first and second opportunities have come from.
Last year the Caps scored 42 goals on the first and second PP opportunities. This year only 16. The lower PP shooting percentage (PP Sh%) on the first and second opportunities I would guess has something to do with today's Noon Number, which probably also affects their PP Sh% overall:

Not all is doom and gloom. There seems to be some life in the PP yet, especially on the first and second opportunities. That's something, right?
