this actually has nothing to do with the caps. A guy (who happens to be a caps season ticket holder) bought the rights to the Natty Boh logo years ago (pretty cheaply i think) and started selling shirts and the popularity has taken off from there. There is a store in fells point that only sells Natty Boh apparel.

I was one of the participants at the clinic last week. Hendricks was ran the most uptempo drill, and had no problem making his point by planting any one of us. He also didn’t take less than full effort well. We were expected to get into the corner and battle. It was the most eye opening drill, and great fun. Hendricks was just as great a guy about the whole thing as you could have hoped.

The entire clinic was a blast. I’ve been meaning to put a fanpost together about it. Since it’s been mentioned in the links a few times, I think I’ll get on that this afternoon.

I meant that more as a… “there isnt much to do in Lewiston” type of thing. Probably even more so for young hockey players. I mean the closest city (if you even want to call it that) is Portland, and there isn’t much to do there either.

I really like living in Portland, but it can get a little old after a while. You can only go to the same places in the Old Port for so long. I do miss going to as many Capitals/Nationals games as I used too. The Pirates and the Sea Dogs help make up for it, but that only goes so far.

There is a lot to do elsewhere in Southern Maine, however, so you can keep it fresh. You just have to get creative. Oh, and the beer, can’t forget that. I think we may be getting OT though…

Nice to see Carrier doing so well. For a very (emphasis on very) crude comparison, Carrier and his D partner were +40 and +41, respectively, during the reg season. The team was +42, and the third leading +/- player was +23. Looking at another guy who was drafted as a power play QB with upside, Josh Godfrey, in Godfrey’s same junior eligibility year (I think) he was a -2. The team was +8 and the team leader, a +14. Carrier’s team was better than Godfrey’s, but both made their respective playoffs (Carrier’s in the Q, Godfrey’s in the O).

Again, a very crude comparison but stil nice to see Carrier’s development relative another similary-billed prospect. And the best thing is Carrier was a 6th round pick, Godfrey was a 2nd.

May, 1993 – Dale Hunter receives a 21-game suspension for viciously body checking Islanders’ center Pierre Turgeon in mid-celebration. morning, all! I was hoping for some movement in the East, but it was not to be. With Pittsburgh and Boston both winning last night, it looks more and more like the top 4 are set, although 1 & 2 might flip. The real battle is going to be 5-6-7. Out West, 4-8 continue to be a battle with Dallas and Calgary in 9-10 and within striking distance.

EAST
Philadelphia vs. Buffalo
Washington vs. NY Rangers
Boston vs. Montreal
Pittsburgh vs. Tampa

WEST
Vancouver vs. Anaheim
Detroit vs. Chicago
San Jose vs. Nashville
Phoenix vs. Los Angeles

if you’re curious, Vancouver is the overall #1, followed by Philly, Washington has clawed their way to the third-best record. Detroit and San Jose are tied for 4th.

They should a graphic on the Pens broadcast last night that I think showed the Caps were only seven points behind where they were on the same day last year. Looks pretty impressive, but the season ran a week longer last year because of the Olympic break. Still, not too shabby.

On March 24 last season, the Caps were 49-14-10 (108 points), compared to 43-21-10 on March 24th this season (96 pts).

Note, though, that last year on that date the Caps had played 73 games compared to 74 this season.

Have to wonder about their graphic.

I’m hoping that the Rangers continue their hot play and move past Montreal and Tampa Bay. Ideally, I’d like to see the Bolts slip to 7th but with those two games in hand, that’s probably unlikely. After watching Montreal last night, I’d take my chances against them vs the Rangers any day of the week. Beating the Habs on Saturday will help.

by b.orr4 on Mar 25, 2011 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought that, too, about the Habs. The only thing I’d worry about that – didn’t they crap out at the end of last season to fall to 8th? Still, I think the Caps have played them far better this season than last season, so I wouldn’t be as worried this time. I think.

I thought the Habs were a rather mediocre team all season? They played Toronto for their last game of the season and had Toronto won, the Habs would have been in 9th, regardless of the outcome of the Philly-Rangers game that eventually went to SO.

Why was MTL the team one team we didn’t want to face last year in the playoffs, but this year it seems that’s who we do want to face? And aside from the obvious drubbings at the hands of Rags, what is it about them that causes the Caps so much grief?

by alisterio on Mar 25, 2011 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions

We couldn’t solve the Canadiens during the regular season last year, and had no answers for them in the postseason either.

This year, the Caps’ new approach to, well, everything, has worked better against the Habs. Not perfect, but better. Also all their best defensemen are out long-term, which helps.

last season, it seemed like the Habs were the team that had the Caps figured out. I’ll hold off on any declarations of that being reversed until after the upcoming game, but the Caps seem to have figured out the Habs thus far.

Also, the Caps seem to be peaking, while the Habs look like the massive amount of injuries and Price’s heavy workload are catching up with them.

I know Vogs was beating the drum against playing Montreal.

by b.orr4 on Mar 25, 2011 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Look at the games Montreal played against the Caps in the regular season…

Game 1: MTL 3 @ WSH 2 That was a 2-goal lead for MTL until a late Laich goal

Game 2: WSH 4 @ MTL 3 (SO) MTL came back from a 2-goal deficit to take a lead before Fehr tied it with 12 seconds left.. Backstrom got the only SO goal.

Game 3: @ WASH 4 MTL 2 Canadiens closed to a one-goal deficit before Semin got an insurance goal with just over 2 minutes left

Game 4: @ MTL 6 WSH 5 (OT) MTL led at one point 5-2; Caps scored 3 in third period to tie before Plekanec won it in OT; snapped Caps 14-game win streak

Montreal had no fear of playing the Caps. The same could be said of the Rangers, who won the last three games in this year’s series by a combined 14-1 score (not including SO goals).

I recall while looking at our potential match ups with 2 or 3 games left I didn’t want in order Phi, Mtl, Bos, Nyr. I was really routing for the Rags to beat the flyers in that shoot out too :S

Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."

Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.

a lot of us wanted nothing to do with Montreal. They were the team the Caps matched up with least favorably. Bruce expressed those same feelings.

Of course “least favorably” was taken to mean “Caps might need 6 games to beat the Habs instead of 4 or 5 for every other team.”

by Berube Doobie Doo on Mar 25, 2011 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions

I have to wonder what Pittsburgh is going to have left in the tank in April. Of their last 16 games:

- Nine of them have gone to extra time
- Ten of them have been one-goal games
- Three of their wins have been in regulation time

Their wins/losses break down like this:

- Eight wins: 3 regulation/2 OT/3 SO
- Eight losses: 4 regulation/3 OT/1 SO

And they are scoring fewer than two-and-a-half goals a game over those 16 games.

They seem to be playing terrific defense. Either that, or you can say the Flyers just didn’t show up last night. Watching the game, I was wishing they could play to four overtimes and wear each other out. Because it looked like that would have happened if it had been a playoff game. OTOH, PIT dominated the OT, so who knows?

Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.

by gfcaps fan on Mar 25, 2011 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

The Pens have been playing superb defense and have gotten fine goaltending. And hard as it is to say, one has to admire their grit in the face of crippling injuries (how would the Caps fare if they lost Backstrom and Ovechkin for a third of the season?). But they play so close to the margin, it is hard to see how they win four games, four times, especially since a lot of their recent fortune is a product of something that isn’t going to be there for them in the playoffs — shootouts.

If you've read this far...seek help.

In theory, I see your point. But if they get by Tampa and then Crosby and Cooke return, it could get dicey. Ideally, I’d like to see a stumbling Tampa team struggle to get past Pittsburgh and then have to face a surging Capitals team. (wow, that’s a lot of ings)

by b.orr4 on Mar 25, 2011 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

As much as it kills me to say it, The Penguins have done a remarkable job since Malkin and Crosby went down. I’m not sure too many teams could acomplish what they have with their top two players out.

by b.orr4 on Mar 25, 2011 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I said it last week or earlier this week, the Pens have been playing without 1 or 2 of their top 3 players all season. Staal missed most of the beginning of the season, Malkin missed some chunks early and now the knee injury, and Crosby went out right around the same time as Staal got back. I think all 3 of them have only played in 1 or 2 games together this season (with the WC being one of those).

What that means is they’ve been adapting to playing without a 2C all season and guys have stepped up and developed into the role, just like Marcus has, they’ve just rotated who’s been that 1C with a little bit of healthy Malkin sprinkled in there. It’s not like they’ve had all 3 healthy and then lost Crosby and Malkin without having anyone to fill in. Staal’s not as good as Crosby, but he got healthy right when Crosby was injured so there’s been almost no drop-off

The same thing it says about the Caps that they have the record they do with 3 young goalies, with so many rookies playing so many key minutes, with so many big name players missing so many games due to injuries, with Ovie having such a “down” year… that just like CB said, the coaches are doing a helluva job preparing the team with the assets they’ve got and that the GMs have done a great job stocking talent in the minors

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

by Elliotte on Mar 25, 2011 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Ehhh, the whole “most valuable” thing really isn’t given as much credence in the Hart Trophy discussion as “who scored the most goals and points”, unfortunately.

Bottom line, if Crosby scores 1.6 points per game all season and no one else cracks 1.2, he’s the unanimous MVP, no matter how well his team is capable of playing without him.

DC’s strong play without Ovechkin didn’t hurt him very much in last year’s MVP voting. It was Sedin’s Art Ross win, IMO, that put him over the top.

by Berube Doobie Doo on Mar 25, 2011 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think they’ve played THAT well without him. I think they’re something like 13-9-3 or something, which is playoff hockey, but nothing astonishing.

If you look at who’s playing well and who’s not, I think there’s a good likelihood that Montreal slips down to seventh and the Rangers move up to eighth. The Rangers have 7 games remaining, 85 points and have 15 points in their last 10 games, whereas Montreal has the same number of games remaining, 87 points, and 10 points in their last 10.

The two teams also have pretty equivalent schedules: they play Washington, Atlanta, @Carolina, @New Jersey, Chicago, @Ottawa, and @Toronto in their last 7, while the Rangers play @Boston, @Buffalo, @Islanders, @Philadelphia, Boston (at home), Atlanta, and New Jersey (arguably, New York’s is harder because they play the division-leading Bruins twice). That being said, New York is also one of the best road teams in the NHL, and have gone 22-14-1 on the road this year. In the end, a slumping Montreal team and a fired-up Rangers team could end up switching spots.

So, who’s buying what @kcarrera is selling with regard to Green having been concussed by the puck to the head?

by Berube Doobie Doo on Mar 25, 2011 10:37 AM EDT reply actions

Was there ever a doubt? I mean, you get hit on the head by a hard piece of rubber traveling 90 mph, the odds are your brain’s going to get mushed around.

by b.orr4 on Mar 25, 2011 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes, there is huge doubt: Compression trauma (which is what happens when you blast a puck into somebody’s ear) to the inner ear and tympanic membrane often causes Virtigo, headaches, Tinnitus (ringing in ears), and a host of other symptoms. All are also symptoms of a concussion. However, the two are not mutually inclusive, and also where he got hit on the head makes the concussion far less likely.

I don’t remember what the actual injury looked like, but if there was enough rotation caused by the impact of the puck, that alone can cause concussion (as well as inner ear trauma or intracranial bleeding. It’s pretty horrifying to think about the amount that can go wrong and how much risk hockey players accept).

Dingos are involved. Best not to ask.

by alex_k on Mar 25, 2011 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

totally agreed, that it could have been worse. I am very doubtful about that particular shot causing intercranial bleeding. He’d have had a subdermal hematoma for sure, and there’s no way to hide those. Your scalp just sort of protrudes like the world’s largest cowlick. If that had happened, there’d be no chance he’s back in the game in less than a week.

I would buy it. I don’t think they would publish a story such as that without being pretty confident with their sources…at least, I would hope not. Cleary sources can sometimes be wrong or not have the access they claim to have. Given the seriousness of concussions and the focus the NHL is placing on such injuries, i would think their sources would be pretty inside…like, inside the locker room.

Sorry, I wasn’t taking issue with the word “publish”. More that, it wasn’t some deeply researched and well-thought-out story that went into the injury issues in depth. It was just a throw-away line, and one that really doubt underwent significant vetting or saw attention from an editor.

by Berube Doobie Doo on Mar 25, 2011 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I have no doubt it is possible, and I also have no doubt that it is possible that she is just jumping to that conclusion on her own and writing it as fact. If she’s right I think it’s by luck.

by MikeBrady on Mar 25, 2011 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

This is precisely where I stand on this issue. She went from saying that Green had “concussion-like symptoms” at the time, to now claiming it was a concussion. And I’ll eat my hat if the team or Green said anything to her about it.

I’ve never been a big fan of hers… And this just grinds my gears.

I’m not a fan, eithe. I don’t care if everyone thinks it’s true that he has a concussion, and throws out “concussion-like symptoms” with a wink and a nod. The team hasn’t confirmed it so it is irresponsible to report it as fact.

My point is that a reporter saying so isn’t the same as confirmation. So even if she says “concussion” like it’s fact, it’s still not because the team hasn’t made it known as fact.

Disagree with your interpretation of “fact”. Only God and a few medical personnel might know whether Green meets the current guidelines for concussion, but the fact that they decline to share that information does not make it any less factual. Similarly, just because the team issues a statement does not make that statement fact.

At some point, the evidence becomes so strong (or commonly accepted) that something is widely accepted as fact.

I’ve said this before that I think there’s a chance he got a mild concussion with the Orpik hit, but who knows. NHL teams aren’t really that forthcoming about injuries, and maybe if it had happened last week instead of two months ago, there would’ve been more openness.

Examples from politics, business, etc. abound. I am not asking for definitive information about the extent of Green’s injury (though that would be nice to attain, I don’t fault her for not providing that 100% because of the club’s tight-lippedness). But her job is to report facts about the team, and to supplement that with other information. Claiming he has a concussion while providing no evidence is not sufficient. Responding to requests for clarification by simply stating that it is a concussion essentially means she is the one who is coming to that conclusion, not any reputable medical professional or team spokesperson, which means she is a fucking opinion journalist at that point. Because that’s what it is — her opinion, which she will not even qualify as such.

I don’t mind anyone reporting a concussion, because it is not really disputable that Green was concussed by the Stepan hit.

I take issue with 1) The fact that she threw around the word “concussion” right after Green was hit in the head with a puck(and used weasel words to justify it, too: “suffering from concussion-like symptoms”), and 2) The fact that she is now saying straight up that Green suffered two concussions. She has never, to my knowledge, even implied that she has any non-public source for such information.

Remember the days when we all got irritated with Tarik because he wouldn’t report on something because he hadn’t confirmed it (injury, incident, trade, contract signing, whatever).

IMO a good reporter should be precise with his/her wording, use more qualifiers (appears, unconfirmed), and say whether a report has a source or not. Katie has as far as I’m concerned been far too definitive in how she has characterized both of Green’s injuries, be they concussions or not.

You need reliable sources who you believe would have access to such information. Sources you would not want to or have to disclose to the public.

Katie and her editors are putting their credibility on the line by claiming he’s concussed, so I would hope and assume they have rock solid info. Not a stretch to consider that they spoke to a player in the room who confirmed that Green is in fact concussed.

They have not, to my knowledge. Do you think they have to?

My assumption would be that this would have to come from a source because this is not something you could or should deduce just from observation. Like, say a groin injury. Perhaps the source didn’t want to be referenced at all. Not sure of all the journalistic rules for making such references. Given the sensitivity around this, throwing in a “according to multiple sources” might have been a good idea..

I wouldn’t be posting this if she did the same as everyone else. No one else has claimed that Green has suffered two concussions in a 2 week span the way she has.

If the Caps rushed Green back after a concussion, and then he suffered another one in his 2nd game back, that would be a pretty BFD, no? She’s making that claim with no evidence whatsoever. No other news outlet has done the same.

No one else has claimed that Green has suffered two concussions in a 2 week span the way she has.

Just because nobody else has claimed it doesn’t mean it’s not true. I haven’t heard any denials from the team about him having two concussions. I would think they would deny it pretty quickly because, ala Sid, it might mean that the team didn’t take enough care after the, alleged, first one.

Whether he’s had two concussions? Pretty sure the question was posed after he got the first puck to the head. Seem to recall some denials when she claimed “concussion like symptoms”. Can’t recall if that was Vogs responding or the team officially. Someone posted a video earlier with her asking GMGM if he was concussed after the second hit.

Can’t imiagine that the star defensemen is out after getting hit twice in the head and nobody would ask if he’s concussed each time, even knowing they are going to get the ultimate Heisman of responses from the team.

The day of the game Green said he didn’t think he’d had a concussion, but admitted having balance issues.

I’m not sure how/when the question was asked between then and the Rangers game.

I would think they would deny it pretty quickly

I think that they simply don’t specifically comment on injuries one way or another. Additionally, this morning’s little phrase on CI wasn’t nearly high-profile enough to cause a stink anywhere outside the comments section of this blog. No one is falling all over themselves to ask BB of GMGM this question. Even Katie didn’t specifically ask it in her interview. She simply asked if Green has a concussion.

by Berube Doobie Doo on Mar 25, 2011 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I would not be surprised if Katie is basing this on McPhee’s response to her poorly worded question in the video I linked above.

She specifically asked if Green suffered a concussion in the Rangers game.

The first word out of GMGM’s mouth is “yeah,”

Are we debating that Green suffered a concussion at all? Or that the Rangers elbow was the second one?

Reminds me of a skins game I was watching when Tim Hasselbeck was the QB. He was awful and Siragusa was laying it into him. The booth announcers didn’t comment much about Hasselbeck’s play but insisted he was a great guy and talked about Elizabeth more than the game. They got frustrated at Siragusa’s attacks and said: maybe if you’d been to the meet and greet like the rest of us you’d know where we’re coming from. He responded: that’s why don’t go to those things, I don’t need to know if he’s nice to judge how bad he’s performing today.

Let me preface this with the fact that I am no MD, BUT aren’t most concussions caused essentially by the brain being damaged through collision with the inner skull? This happens when the brain is sudenly accelerated through a major collision and sudenly stopped (think head to boards or head to elbow). A puck to the head seems way too localized to cause a typcial concussion. It could certainly cause concussion-like symptoms (e.g., disorientation, vertigo, headaches, vision problems) though.

Now the Stepan hit, I could definitely see that causing a concussion, one that might even have been exacerbated by the previous trauma. By the way, when Clark’s ear was almost shorn off by an Ovechkin slaphot a few years back, was he ever formally diagnosed with a concussion?

Thanks to Mirtle, the Globe & Mail has a list of the number of man-games lost to injury this year for each team. Caps are all the way down in 14th with “only 218” man games lost (mgl). Works out to 2.99 mgl/game. The Islander have a staggering 512 (6.92 per game!) mgl list season. At the other end, Carolina is sitting pretty with a mere 56 mgl this season.

I’ve seen some buzz about how Chicago is now back on track after injuries took their toll. Let me break out my tiny violin for all those injuries. All 97 mgl this season, third-least in the NHL.

JP was pointing out on Twitter that raw numbers don’t tell the whole tale – losing Green for 15 games hurts this team more than, for example, the Penguins losing a fourth-line center for 30 games (totally made up example, I can’t remember which teams have lost which players anymore :P). And I’m certainly not sympathetic to the Hawks "injury plight" but that’s something important to remember when looking at lists like this.

Of course when you’re getting into the top three or four teams, obviously, there’s a huge impact on your lineup regardless of how "key" all the guys are.

From Pierre LeBrun Chat
Justin Jones (Virden, MB)
What team(s) should be most concerned about their goaltending heading in to the playoffs?

Pierre LeBrun
  (11:44 AM)
Philly (as always), Washington, Detroit

Seems like the Caps should be least worried of all 16 teams, what with three capable goaltenders who’ve combined for the 4th best overall GAA in the league…

…or maybe we’re totally fucked.

by Alex Reed on Mar 25, 2011 2:09 PM EDT reply actions

Eh, it’s a throw away line by all of the pundits and has been all year. We practically have 3 rookie goaltenders and therefore we have no one to rely on in the playoffs. I find it hard to get worked up about this anymore and would rather the team just show them how wrong they are in 3 weeks or so.

"Ovechkin is as subtle as a shot of vodka."

by i12swim on Mar 25, 2011 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

It would be presumtuous of me to read LeBrun’s mind….so I will anyway. The problem with relying on rookies (or really young guys) who have no long playoff resumes is that they might realize where they are and start playing like rookies. This is a “until you do it, you haven’t done it” kind of thing, and among the three Caps goalies they have precisely one playoff series win. I’d be “concerned” about the Caps goaltending because the playoffs are not the regular season, and the NHL isn’t the OHL. It’s still a wild card.

If you've read this far...seek help.

by ThePeerless on Mar 25, 2011 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

It is indeed…my issue, though, is that the idea that the Caps’ playoff success or failure is inextricably linked to their goaltending is fundamentally flawed.

Yes, the Caps (or any team, really) need a guy who can maybe steal a game or two, but there’s a reason that an “elite” goalie hasn’t won the Cup in years: with the salary cap forcing teams to spread costs around, you’re not going to steal a Cup with a goalie. You need a good team in front with lots of depth. Look at the goalies who have won the Cup (or even simply made the Finals) in the last 4-5 years. Where’s Brodeur? Lundqvist? Miller? Backstrom? Kiprusoff?

…but then I’m preaching to the choir. Every time this comes up I get a little ranty :P

…….and my point (I did have one) is that this Caps team in particular has shown that if they’re on, they just need the goalie to be good, not great, to win. They certainly didn’t lose the Montreal series because their goaltending sucked.

Absolutely. Based on how the Caps have played this season (particularly since the Russian Whisperer arrived), I’m not of the opinion we need stand-on-your-head fantastic goalie play to reach the SC Finals.

A combination of special teams and a continued commitment to team defense is what will get it done, along with the usual side dish of good fortune. As long as our goalies aren’t terrible we can (and other than Philly, should) beat all seven EC playoff teams in a best-of-7.

Meh. From the beginning I hated the MTL matchup because of the experience they had on defense.

We’d have been able to score against Philly, even with a terrible Sasha

But those two series he played in (before the finals) he was lights out, allowing only 11 goals in 8 games (and 5 were in one game against the Canadians). He got hot and carried the team.

The big question with the Capitals’ goalies is: is there a guy who can play 20 games and not get hurt?

by RCheli on Mar 25, 2011 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, any goalie can hit those hot streaks…but I stand by my belief that he wasn’t facing the toughest of offenses, Montreal included, in any of those series. And let’s not forget he was behind a pretty decent defense and defensive team in general.

Do we need a guy who can play 20 games and not get hurt? Best case scenario we have Neuvy and Varly healthy and Holtby in the AHL.

If Neuvy falters, we have Varly. If Varly falters, we have Holtby.
Btw, Neuvy has been starting for weeks now. What makes you think he can’t play 20 games?

There’s also the worry that you pick the wrong guy. No decisions to make in PIT, MTL, BOS, NYR, CAR, BUF, TB (maybe)… but you could “guess” wrong here. The options are good ones, but I’ll be damned if I could tell you with 100% certainty who the team’s best bet to start Game 1 is. That, to me, is a concern (even if I’m sure it’s not what Pierre meant).

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Mar 25, 2011 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I choose to look at it from a “glass half full” perspective. The fact that we have two goalies with really solid numbers, and who have each earned(in different ways) the confidence of the coaches, is a strength.

If it is difficult to choose one or other other, it’s only because they’re both excellent, and we probably can’t make a bad pick here.

by Berube Doobie Doo on Mar 25, 2011 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Right, because the Blackhawks have such solid goaltending. And Roloson has been playing so very well lately.

Yeah, strange that Chicago and Crawford don’t get a mention.

by LucyImHome on Mar 25, 2011 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Crawford has been healthy all year — the Hawks have only used 2 goaltenders this season. This is a huge plus in his and Chicago’s favor.

by RCheli on Mar 25, 2011 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Lucy is more suggesting that Crawford is a rookie and has never been in any play-off type atmosphere

Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!

by kingzman264 on Mar 25, 2011 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure, but to me, the Capitals’ issue with goaltending may not be that there are three (or 2 1/2) rookies, it’s that there is no number one.

I mean, people have been talking about it for weeks: if both Neuvirth and Varlamov are healthy, who starts? The next question has been: how confident are you that either has the ability to remain healthy throughout the playoffs? You don’t have those questions in Chicago.

by RCheli on Mar 25, 2011 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

The fact that there’s a question of who’s the number one really doesn’t cause a problem, imo. i think it’s an advantage.

With rookies, you don’t know how they’re going to perform. That’s the big crux. Chicago has no idea how Crawford will do in the play-offs (although his regular season stats will suggest he’ll do well). He does poorly? Who do they have? Turco!?

We have a pretty good idea of Neuvy will do in the play-off atmosphere. We’ve seen Varly. Holtby is the only mystery. Now, if Neuvy doesn’t do well, then we get Varly. If Varly doesn’t do well? Hope Neuvy has shaken off the rust, or, put in Holtby.

Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!

by kingzman264 on Mar 25, 2011 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

One last thing about Crawford: he’s 26. He’s had a long career in the minors and isn’t really your standard rookie.

by RCheli on Mar 25, 2011 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Point taken. In the end, I think Crawford will do very well and cruise behind a great Chicago team to maybe the 2nd round. At that point, I feel like teams may be able to exploit him (just like any other goalie not named Miller or Lundqvist)

Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!

by kingzman264 on Mar 25, 2011 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

The Blackhawks have a really nice top 4 defensemen in Campbell, Keith, Seabrook, and Hjarlmalsson.I don’t think that they have enough depth at any position to contend very far this year, but they’re still very dangerous.

Crawford has done a lot better than anyone in this city could have expected.

by RCheli on Mar 25, 2011 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, and his save numbers are worse than Neuvy’s, to say nothing of Varly. On paper we have two goalies better than Crawford.

If Neuvy stinks, we have Varly and vice versa. If Crawford stinks . . .

Tampa at least should be on there, but depending on unproven and oft-injured goaltenders is cause for worry. The question wasn’t who has the worst goaltending, so the response doesn’t necessarily have to be taken that way.

by Rainbow, Kitty, Beer on Mar 25, 2011 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. Plus, as much as we’ve seen him crumble at times, Roloson really does solidify that position for Tampa and gives them veteran experience. REALLY veteran experience. I heard he was the goalie for the Union Army’s official hockey team.

Alright, I’m going to take a minute here to talk about something that’s not really hockey-related, but is blog-related. I could mention it in the Off-Topic thread, but I want to make sure folks here saw it (so if someone wants to link to this comment in the OTOT, that’d be cool, of course).

Anyway, the other night we had an incident. The specifics aren’t important and don’t really need to be brought up here. What matters is that someone (a long-time and highly valued member of our community) violated our community guidelines in a way that left us no choice but to ban him, which we did.

Since then, he has reached out to us and expressed what we feel is a sufficient level of both contrition and understanding for us to feel comfortable lifting his ban. We consider this matter handled and are looking forward to moving on, but if anyone has any concerns about it, please feel free to contact myself or one of the moderators listed below. Thanks.

It’s just him going through some drills this morning. At one point he flicks a top-shelf backhand shot and the water bottle seems to come apart. (My guess is he hit it near the neck and the top popped off.)

The funny thing for me is you hear a coach or player in the background saying “Oh My God! Did you see the water bottle?” in a tone which would only have been appropriate if Crosby had just cured cancer while levitating above the ice.
