I read the “All Concussed” team with interest. They had listed Knuble on it. I had thought Knuble’s injury was a broken jaw rather than a concussion. And he seemed like he was relatively lucky on that front — not needed his jaw to be wired up.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
And speaking of the “All Concussed”, the article noticed that Bolland of the Blackhawks who had gotten elbowed by Pavel Kubina was too woozy to accompany his teammates on a visit to the Walter Reed Medical center. Of all the ironies!
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
As of four days ago (i.e. months since he missed time with his facial injury), Knuble “had one concussion in his career.”
I’d never seen the “c” word on that Knuble injury, but who knows?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The Concussion Blog that the article references, and from which I assume the “team” members are taken from, lists Knuble with a concussion as early as November 22, 2010. As of February 28, 2011, Knuble, Poti, and Green are all listed as having concussions. The author posts this disclaimer, however, so take it as you wish:
… it is not easy as the NHL has decided that listing injuries as "upper body" or "undisclosed" is a good indicator of actual injuries occurred. Our list is believed to be as accurate as possible, even including injuries that have vague listings but through reports and video analysis should be classified as concussions.
By the way, the Gazette article mentions that blog multiple times but never provides a link. Not very new media of them.

Solid disclaimer, Dr. Frist!
And I don’t doubt that a puck to the jaw would cause a concussion. I’d just never seen that noted (or really even heard of him having concussion-like symptoms).

Knuble’s injury might be referring to when he and Brendan Shanahan collided (Knuble with Flyers, Shanahan with Rangers). Knuble fractured his cheekbone and orbital bone.

Arnott audio
Here’s another audio from Arnott after practice yesterday. Scroll down the page to the audio list. Other Caps also interviewed.
Holtby mentioned working on shootings and breakaways down in Hershey after his first shootout debacle in dc. Anyone know if Irbe went down and worked with him, or if it was the Hershey coaches? Just curious.

Nice interview with Irbe on the ECHL site. It hadn’t occurred to me that playing in the ECHL would be harder for goalies because of the unpredictability of shots. I really like Archie and I think he’s been doing great work with the kids.

I was thinking the same thing. I had to re-read that section to make sure I wasn’t misinterpreting. I doubt being a AA goalie is more difficult, necessarily. It sounds like they just have to maintain focus at all times, because the defense in front of them is prone to break down at any second. Basically, the more skilled the players, the more predictable the flow of the game will be from the goalie’s perspective. Quality article, by the way.

Did somebody say ECHL defenses are prone to break downs?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I was thinking not only of defensive breakdowns, but also maybe less skill on the forwards’ part – stickhandling, speed, accuracy, etc. I would think those factors would make it harder for a goalie to maintain focus as well.
You had me at "no problem"!
by mosaicist on Mar 11, 2011 8:49 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
I think part of it is also that there are more flubbed shots. Because a lot of times you have to react without really seeing the puck, just the motion of the shooter, you end up letting in some goals (or having to adjust quickly) because the shooter will not hit what they are aiming for and where their body movements suggest the puck will go.
ZOMG the Caps’ defense sucks. Fire Bruce! We’re only he 4th best GA/G in the league! I demand better !!!
I know it’s an easy joke to make, but come on. When you say it like that, you’re implying that everyone who thinks a change in leadership might be warranted is an uninformed troll, which I find mildly offensive. It’s incredibly dismissive to act as if there aren’t legitimate criticisms of either the coach or the team.

Well put.
The team’s goals-per-game differential has dropped from 1.05 last season to 0.27 this year – there’s plenty of room for criticism, even if one aspect of the team’s performance has far exceeded expectations.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I think Boudreau is a fair target for criticism any day of the week. But you can correctly identify attritbute the shrinking differential allmost solely to the horrific lapse in the PP – and is the coach to blame when the team’s primary PP point man (Green) and prolific scorer (Semin) are missing due to injury? Multiple players had career seasons last year: Semin as a goal scorer and Nicky’s overall point production – is Boudreau to blame for their relative ineffectiveness/inconsistency?
Bruce’s myopia likely doomed the squad last playoffs – this year, his ability to help pull the team out of a killing slump tells me volumes.
Does anyone still believe that Boudreau should not be coach of the Capitals, period? Forget early playoff exits – is he the wrong coach right now? Personally, I think you’ve got to hang most of this year’s “disappointing” ( if you can call a team 4 points out of Ist in the EC that) season on the players.
the coach to blame when the team’s primary PP point man (Green) and prolific scorer (Semin) are missing due to injury?
Look at the PP with them in the lineup – not much better.
Like I said, plenty of room for criticism. It certainly doesn’t end with Bruce.

Cup finals maybe. My issues with Bruce run pretty deep. I’m not a fan of how he coaches defensive hockey, I think that more clever coaches can outfox him tactically within games, I don’t think he holds his star players remotely accountable and I think that he’s prone to wearing his star players out chasing meaningless milestones.

I agree. I think some time needs to be spent by GMGM thinking about which system out there best suits our personnel and hire someone who’s intimately familiar with that system. E.g., if we think our personnel are right for Detroit’s system, go hire a Babcock asst.
Bruce -- you define me.
If you like how Dave Tippett coaches the Yotes, then maybe we should hire one of his assistants. Oh wait, Ulf Samuelsson…..errr maybe not.

As long as the team not showing up until the second or third period is a regular occurrence, I do wonder.
Geeks of All Nations, Compile!
Ironically, I was just listening to NHL Live on XM and Bille Jaffe and Eddie O were both saying the Bruce deserves consideration for coach of the year for the way that he’s transformed the Caps into one of the best defensive teams in the league. And they were saying the same thing the other night on NHL On the Fly.
Jaffe said that. Eddie O gave BB credit for changing the system, but definitely wasn’t endorsing BB for the Adams
They also talked about Vigneault as a candidate because the Canucks are running away with the Presidents’ Trophy. Funny, I don’t recall any talk about Bruce last year. I also don’t see where Vigneault would get serious consideration; too many better stories out there.

A little crude on my behalf, yes. I acknowledge the problems in other areas and that the leap in defensive play takes away from other areas.
I guess I’m more making fun of people that don’t have patience. Patience to see if Bruce’s new ways can be improved upon. Patience to see if the changes will last in the playoffs. I’ve been a huge defender of Bruce this season and I’m all for giving him the axe if we choke in the playoffs again.
I’m all for giving him the axe if we choke in the playoffs again.
I’m curious what the general concensus is on what constitutes “choking”? Obviously a first round loss, but would a seven-game second round loss to Philly fall under that definition or does Bruce have to get to at least the Conference Finals to avoid the axe?
So hard to talk about it in the hypothetical.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The inevitable “what happens in the playoffs” conversation!
Just for now, generally speaking I’d say anything less than making it to the conference finals would be joking, but it really depends on the circumstances. I seriously doubt we would end up playing the flyers in the first two rounds unless we really take a tumble in the standings.

"[Weber] shoots like MacInnis, hits like Stevens." - Jeff Marek
Is this a trick for us to make a case for Thomas, then you remind us that Pekka Rinne’s stats are very similar despite playing in a few more games?
I’ll bite though and say a sub-2.00 GAA and a .940 save percentage above. I think Tim Thomas’ stats are impressive, but it’s more about how he’s consistently played well all year, and that there isn’t a skater that has separated from the pack. Both Sedin’s are putting up good stats, but I think that team is deep enough, especially with the season Kesler is having, that if you lost one of them, it wouldn’t hurt the team too much.
by JimCareyFanClub on Mar 11, 2011 8:44 AM EST up reply actions
No lie, that’s certainly what it’s based upon, but I think its a good question in general because I can see a case being made for a goalie who is more valuable to his team than any other player in the NHL. Whether or not the voters vote that way instead of just voting ‘best player’ is another matter, though.

Not an exact science, but in keeping with the “most valuable player on his team” theme.
- Not just a low GAA and high SV, but significantly better than any of his backups (in other words, he is not merely one of a talented set - his performance is significantly superior)
- Games: probably more than 70. He has to be “the man” in a big way Odd as it might sound, plays for a team with a suspect offense. Goalies with a 2.25 GAA and a .925 save percentage on a team that scores 3.25 a game don’t impress me as much as a goalie with a 2.25/.925 who play on teams that struggle score. He has to be the difference on a lot of nights.
-
— Has to be on a playoff team or one right on the edge. Otherwise, he might be “best” but not “valuable” (if you place a value on “winning”)

Related question: does “they have their own award” weigh in the decision? To me it does. Because by the very definition of value, it’s hard to imagine a player with more of it than a goalie, and any team with a great starter and shitty backup (see Miller, Ryan) would almost by definition be the most valuable player to his team in the League, no?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Good question, but I think you can separate ‘best goalie in a given year’ from ‘more valuable player’.

Related question: does "they have their own award" weigh in the decision?
Maybe a reason why so few defensemen win this award as well?
I don’t think the “own award” should really matter. Most valuable player to his team is most valuable player, no matter how you slice it. By definition there are plenty of goalies out there who deserve it like Thomas and Price. I think people are way too concerned with trying to spread the recognition around and less concerned with the fact that in the end, these awards don’t really mean anything compared to a cup. Most people would trade 10 MVP’s for a single stanley cup.
Baseball has similar problems with their MVP and the “Cy Young,” and handle it as awkwardly as hockey. I understand that the awards are chosen by different entities, but if I was Emperor of the NHL for a moment, I’d change the Lindsay Award to make it “best skater” (Ted Lindsay wasn’t a goalie), and I’d redo the Hart citation to simplify it and make it more ambiguous — “Player of the Year.” Would put a greater emphasis on shockingly good numbers, skaters or goalies.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Except that pitchers rarely win the Cy Young because they play every fifth game or play 1/9 of a game. Position players make a bigger difference in baseball.
In hockey, the goalie is out on the ice more than any position player.
In hockey, the goalie is out on the ice more than any position player.
Last year, TOI leader was Duncan Keith at 2180 minutes. Brodeur led the way for goalies at 4499.

Not to me — there’s a best defenseman award and a best defensive-forward award, too — but last year I very strongly supported Miller for MVP.
(And the baseball equivalent to goalie is catcher, not pitcher: the player who’s in the whole game and has a strategic view of the full playing space.)

To further reveal my thinly veiled agenda:
Rinne: .930, 2.08, 24-19-8
Thomas: .939, 2.01, 29-8-8
Preds: 2.46 goals per game
Bruins: 3.02 goals per game
"[Weber] shoots like MacInnis, hits like Stevens." - Jeff Marek
by Chris Burton on Mar 11, 2011 8:52 AM EST up reply actions
The goals per game statistic is pretty amazing, but I think that’s indicative of the two goalies’ records. Considering how well Rinne is doing and that I haven’t heard much talk about his case for winning the Hart, that leads me to believe that it will most likely go to a skater. I do think that if Thomas begins to slip a little, that Rinne could definitely win the Vezina.
Now to play devil’s advocate, are Rinne’s stats only that good because of the style that Nashville plays? Basically, is he a product of being a goalie on a better defensive team, or is he the guy that makes Nashville a good defensive team?
by JimCareyFanClub on Mar 11, 2011 9:00 AM EST up reply actions
The reason I bring up the Hart is because San Jose coach Todd McLellan said before their morning skate on Tuesday that Rinne should be receiving serious consideration for it.
The whole “Nashville has an awesome defense” thing is true, to an extent, but only regarding Weber and Suter. The GA/G number is almost entirely Rinne – check out how many shots the defense allows.

I dunno. The fact that a 2008 7th round pick has a 2.58 GAA and .914 SV% kinda implies otherwise.

It would, but that would be without acknowledging how capable Lindback is. He was very good in the SEL and the only reason he was chosen so late was because of his physical disability.

For it to happen, the goaltender has to be head and shoulders responsible for carrying his team to a great record. Here are the goalies that last won the trophy:
2001-02 Jose Theodore (MTL)
1997-98 Dominik Hasek (BUF)
1996-97 Dominik Hasek (BUF)
1961-62 Jaques Plante (MTL)
1953-54 Al Rollins (CHI)
So since expansion (which was 45 years ago), it’s only been won by a goalie 3 times. If you look at Hasek’s teams, they were both playoff teams. In 1996-97, the leading scorer was Derek Plante with 27G, 26A for 53P. Despite that, the Sabres won the Northeast Division by 8 points. Obviously Hasek was the man responsible for that, as the Sabres allowed only 208 goals during the season. In 1997-98 the leading scorer was Miroslav Satan with 22G, 24A for 46P. The Sabres did finish 3rd, but were only 3 points of their record in 1996-97, and they allowed only 187 goals for the season. They also made the playoffs and, as Caps fans can recall, went to the Eastern Final (where they lost to the Caps). Again, that was all Hasek.
The Habs in 2001-02 were led in scoring by Yanic Perreault (really!) with 56 points, followed by Richard Zednik with 44, yet they made the playoffs to Theo’s .931 save percentage for the season. Theo played in 67 games going 30-24-10. Again, without Theo they’re not in the playoffs…
So in order for a goalie to win the Hart, they have to be not just a big reason a team makes the post-season, but pretty much the only reason they make the post-season… in this season, I don’t see any goalie that stands out at that level.

For me it’s stamkos, daniel sedin, and toews as finalists. And I don’t think anyone really stands out as a shoe in
Those would be my 3 candidates now. Crosby would have been another if he were still playing. An argument could be made if the Pens miss the playoffs that Crosby is the most valuable player as his loss cost the Pens the playoff berth.

I don’t see how the Pens miss the playoffs, even with Crosby and Malkin out. They built up a huge cushion with that win streak, and have, somehow, been able to scrape out OT wins. they have a 12 point lead on 8th place and 14 points on 9th.
that said, it’s pretty obvious (and was last season as well) that Crosby is the engine that drives the Pens. Keep him off the score sheet, and you’ve almost assured yourself a win.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
Admittedly it is unlikely that they miss, but if MAF starts slipping up, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Pens go something like 3-9-2 in their last 14, finishing with 94 points. Still likely a playoff team, but also not guaranteed.

Thomas is playing very well, but the Bruins aren’t lacking in scoring like those teams mentioned above. The B’s already have 3 50 point guys in Krejci, Lucic and Bergeron, and they have a couple of all-star defensemen in Chara and Kubina (admittedly not this year…)
On the Hasek and Theo Teams, both only had one guy with 50 points, or in one case, none. If Thomas is only having a good year, the B’s are still in the playoff hunt.

Very nice accolades for Brett Fleming — best defensive defenseman in the OHL (over Gubrandson). Undersized but looking forward to see how he develops.
Bruce -- you define me.
After reading that I started thinking that in a few years we might have an anglicized Francis Boullion on our hands. Not bad for a mid-round pick.
Matt Hendricks is a honey badger.
I’ve been a fan of his for a while but didn’t realize he was making his rep in his own end. I had assumed he was an offensive D that had a padded plus/minus because he was scoring a lot on a good team. This only makes me more impressed with him. Can’t wait to get a closer look at him in the organization.

Yeah. It’ll be nice to have some legitimate defensive prospects back in Hershey next year between him and Orlov.
Matt Hendricks is a honey badger.
His scoring is almost all assists. But he is very good at being on the ice when goals-for are scored, and mysteriously absent when goals-against are scored.
Last night he finished an uncharacteristic “even” on the night, with an assist i=on his team’s first goal and being on0-ice for one ES goal against.
He has been “minus” exactly six games all season. 2 in October, one each in November, December, Janusry and February.
Oh and the Majors clinched the OHL regular season championship last night.

Based on nothing more than casual observations, it does seem that while both Flemming and Galiev play on extremely strong teams within their respective leagues, Flemming appears to be more of a driver of results and Stan more a passenger. But hopefully they both reach their potential.
Bruce -- you define me.
I’d say that was the case earlier in the season, but Galiev has stepped up his game quite a bit in the last two months. But the Sea Dogs’ shootout win last night has me a little worried that they’ve used too much energy keeping up their fantastic stats in the regular season.

The Finley Article...
Andrew Miller has our goalies pegged, alright:
The one guy he can trade that would get some interest is goalie Shane Owen. Owen is one of the few "free agent" players that he can trade with value. And as I’ve stated in the past, you don’t want to have 3 goalies on your roster.
But then do you risk trading Shane, who has played extremely well since joining the Rays, when you know one of the goalies in Hershey or Washington could sneeze and be out for a couple of weeks.
He sure has the Caps goaltending situation figured out…

It’s Pierre Maguire, so take it for what it’s worth but on XM this morning he couldn’t stop raving about Orlov. His exact quote was “Orlov isn’t going to be just a star in the NHL. He’s going to be a superstar.” Never heard anyone say he was going to be that good, but everything I’ve read so far makes me think the Caps really found a gem when they drafted him.
You can set your watch by Maguire’s hyperbolic praise.
That said, nice to hear.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Ain’t that the truth, but I got the sense that he was making that statement based on what scouts have been reporting to him more than anything he’s seen. Maguire can be over the top but there’s no doubt he’s well connected within the hockey world. Hey, if he’s only partially right, it sounds like Orlov could be something special.
I would assume his comments are based on the WJCs, more than based on anything Orlov has done in the KHL or AHL.
Probably, although the scouts have been gushing about him in his short stint so far at Hershey, so he may be basing his comments on some of that as well.
Orlov has played well for Hershey no questioning that, but somehow comments from Leone and Walton turned into comments from scouts. I don’t doubt some scouts have seen him and commented as well, but the specific comment which got repeated and attributed to a scout came from Leone, the beat writer. I like Leone a lot so not saying the comment didn’t have value, but the source aspect has gotten ‘telephoned’.
And how many players that Pierre gushes about aren’t legitimately very good? I know I get sick of his man crushes on certain guys (the Ontario Angel) but he’s not man-crushing on scrubs.
Whether it’s his own opinion or his take from other scouts, he can identify talent.

poor Dmitry! now he’s cursed.
I was telling Ovechwin and CapitalCentre on Tuesday that I thought Orlov would be the more difficult Russian to pry away from the KHL. Boy was I wrong. Very happy to be wrong, too.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
In a way, he reminds me of Ovechkin in that he wants to play in the best league in the world. Ovechkin loves Russia but there was never a doubt that the NHL was where he wanted to be. Orlov seems to be cut from the same cloth. Conversely, Kuz worries me a little in that he seems to be less eager about the NHL.
Kuz is still only eighteen. Let him have another year in-country, livin’ the KHL dream. There will come a time when his curiosity will get the better of him – how would his skills stack up against NHL defensemen and goaltenders?
If I’m worried about him staying in Russia, it’s more to do with his June 3 wedding, and wanting to know how his wife (and potential offspring) could affect his decision-making. How does she feel about moving to Ballston?
But for now, I’ll be happy “watching” him play in the Kharlamov Cup playoffs. Chelyabinsk travels to Ufa for Game One tomorrow. Kuz finished up the MHL regular season 6-1-7 in his final two games. It’s not even fair.
Go Polar Bears go!

You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Orlov was somewhere in the middle of Siberia, was he not? I could see why he’d want to leave for the warmer climes of Washington.
Of course a certain #28 lived in Siberia and he wasn’t in a rush to get back to the NHL. I just think Orlov is driven to see how good he can be and that’s why he was in such a rush to play in Hershey and get his career started.
Not comparing prospect upside aspect, but look at Dovgan, he came over at 19yo and played in the ECHL for a season. Married and had a kid born in Russia sometime during that year, IIRC, and then stayed in Russia the next season and then he came back over and played another season in the ECHL.
There are so many variables, including home life and personality, plus compensation and opportunity. It should be little surprise EK is staying for another season in Russia given his contract and age. This fan simply hopes he doesn’t extend his contract in advance beyond next season and waits to see how things play out and given the Caps/NHL serious consideration a year from now. The lack of an NHL CBA beyond next season is also a factor, IMO.
He’s young. It’s a gamble drafting a player from anywhere and as we know there are extra issues with drafting Russian players. The Caps take advantage of these players dropping in the draft as a result and have the strongest sales pitch of any NHL team to sign a Russian player when one combines the city and the team.
And given that Kuz has achieved superstar status in Russia due to the WJC and his play in the KHL, the pressure for him to stay in the Motherland will be even greater. I think he’ll eventually come over because it is the NHL and the Caps are such a huge draw for Russian players, but he’s going to do it on his terms (no time in Hershey).
not quite as far into Siberia as Semin’s hometown, but pretty damn remote. I think if you went straight south from the city Orlov was in, you hit China.

Semin was playing in Tolyatti, which is not near Siberia. He also had compulsory military service, which prevented him from returning the season after the lockout.

I like the falling all over himself raving part.
I also heard Milbury on XM yesterday. He was basically asked to praise the Caps: “Mike – we’ve all been critical of the Caps this year, but we look up and their just two points out of first in the East. You have to believe they’re in a good spot going forward.”
Milbury then swallowed saliva and tried to answer without saying something nice. Yes, I’m biased. However, he never agreed with the question. He ended with the old standard “not clear if they can do this in the playoffs or they haven’t shown they can win.” McGuire said nothing about Caps’ prospects in the playoffs and talked about them here and now.

I agree. The Caps match up very nicely with the Sabres. What I also like about these match ups is the potential for the 3-6 and 4-5 match ups to be very long series (esp. Bos-Mtl.) If the Caps do what they should do in a match up with Buffalo (dispatch them in 5 games) then they can heal up while Boston and Montreal commit all sorts of horror movie violence against battle each other and play what’s left of the survivor.

What I like even better is that if Montreal were to pull the upset over Boston then we’d face the winner of Pitt/Tampa in round two (assuming Philly dispatches NYR). I’d take either of those in a heartbeat. The earliest we’d be able to play Montreal if these seeds hold true is the ECF. I’ll gladly be last years Philly team facing an exhausted and beat up Montreal team for a chance to play for the Cup.

Speaking of goalies, but not the Caps, some of us were discussing the surprise at Khudobin being traded by Minnesota. I have to look at his status, but I was discussing Group VI UFAs (and Andrew Gordon, specifically) the other night with one of the poster’s from here, and it’s possible Khudobin is going to be a Group VI UFA (I have to look up the specifics for goalies.)
Also, Minnesota according to Capgeek just signed Endras. So Hackett and Endras will be in the system.
I think you’ve just ruined the day for Andrew Gordon fans. I had no idea he’d be UFA this year.

That Arnott interview from the Mike Wise show is must-listen. Specifically where Arnott talks about his relationship with Semin. I’ll para-transcribe the best part here:
Question (Kushner): Since you’ve shown up [Semin]‘s actually played like there’s a fire under his ass….Did you talk to him at all? Why is he playing differently?
Arnott: I’ve talked to him a lot and I got to know a little bit about him just coming here from other guys and things that he was a different cat. He’s very very talented but for me I just don’t know if guys took the time enough to talk to him enough and mkae him feel part of everything and also get on him when he does things wrong. I think he needs the correction and a little more discipline in his game and he needs to know how important he is to this team to win. So it’s just little thigns and I’ve been talking to him every day and it’s just communication between linemates it just helps a lot.
I mean, is this guy great or what? He’s doing pretty much exactly what he was brought here to do and lighting the fire under Semin’s ass is quite a bonus.
The keyboard is mightier.

How do we know the coaching staff wasn’t saying this to Semin, sometimes the message is received differently from a player than a coach. Also, while I thoroughly enjoyed the interview, the fact is Arnott has no idea what conversations have taken place between coaches and player or players to player in the last before he arrived via trade.
Exactly. It’s pretty clear from BB’s frequent exasperated comments that he has said things to Semin. I don’t know why anyone would assume he hasn’t. It’s at least equally plausible that Semin just doesn’t listen to the coach or doesn’t implement what he hears. Which leads to other questions: is Semin really listening to Arnott? If so, will it last? Or is his better play recently a coincidence?

I think its OV’s job – he’s the Capt., he is a friend and he is a countryman…I take that remark from Arnott as a bit of an idictment of the leaders on the ice, specifically #8 – I’m glad he said it.
Hey, sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie, but I'd never know 'cause I wouldn't eat the filthy motherfucker.
There may be something to be said for having a guy come from the outside, with the type of experience that Arnott has, versus hearing from in house. I’m sure Feds provided similar support for Semin.
Clearly I’m not in the room, but I don’t see Ovi as the type of Captain who will say the things that Arnott would say. Particularly to Semin who’s Ovi’s bud. I think Ovi will get there, but for now he’s an example type of Captain vs. a sit down and critique your game Captain.

NCAA/CHL free agent signing is starting, along with draft pick signings…of note, a bunch of NCAA teams seasons will end this weekend with conference tourneys and qualifying/not qualifying for the NCAA tourney.
Also, for teams not making the respective CHL playoffs, players will start appearing on AHL and ECHL rosters.
And we’re at 48 contracts now (including Gussy)? Does GMGM need space this time of year or can/should he to to 50 in ancitipation of others coming off at year end?

And even though he plays in a new, more humble way he got nine points in his last five games, and passed not only 600 but also Michal Pivonka on Capital’s all-time list. In front of him are only Capital legends Peter Bondra and Mike Gartner.

Practice popularity
Given the popularity of the open practices at Kettler, I was wondering…. do the Caps have practices when they are on the road? It seems like that would be hard to organize, especially after traveling. I will be at the Caps vs. Red Wings game next week (actually will be in Detroit for the whole week), and I’ve heard/read (although not reliably) that the Wings do not have open practices like the Caps. (Husband is a Wings fan.) And that led me to wonder if the Caps have practices while on the road. I would think an open practice on the road would also be just asking for idiot fans of the other team to show up and harass the players. I’m assuming I will just have to trek to DC some day and see a practice at Kettler if I ever want to see one. The article makes it sound like tons of fun, which I’m sure it is!
I'm rockin' the red... shoes!
practice isn’t open on the road, except on very rare days (usually because the home team is also holding an open practice)

Have you tried reaching out to the Caps to find out? I know the chances are slim, but maybe they’ll let you know what the plans are for Detroit :)
I haven’t yet, but I have thought about doing that. We are coming all the way from Kentucky for the game, so that should score me some brownie points. Any suggestions as to where I would I start to make contact?
I'm rockin' the red... shoes!
start with Mike Vogel and Sergey. Tell them you’re a Caps fan from Kentucky and going to Detroit for the game and you’re wondering if practice is open. worse they can say is “sorry, it’s closed.”
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
I know this discussion is Detroit specific, but in general whether a practice is closed or open is based in large part on where the practice is taking place. If at a public rink, typically open, if at the arena or a private practice facility (for example, the NYR), typically closed. The cost for security and other staff to have an open practice at an arena is typically the reason the practice is closed.
Good points. I’ll see what I can find out about both teams. Anyone happen to know (before I start searching) where the Wings practice? While that obviously wouldn’t excite me nearly as much as seeing a Caps practice, Hubby would still enjoy it.

Gee, Joe, I think you were traded because Washington thought you would be another puck-moving d-man, taking some pressure off Mike Green. And they didn’t want to go into the playoffs with Tyler sloan as the #7 d-man. And Carolina decided that since they weren’t going to make the playoffs, they might as well trade you and get some value. This is not that difficult to understand.

I wasn’t a fan of Corvo in a Caps jersey, but that is a very odd quote. Might be fun if someone goes back and digs up his quotes from the time of the trade/soon after the trade.
Here are some..
“An opportunity comes around a handful of times in a career that you get to go to such a strong team with such high expectations at this time of the year,” Corvo said as he prepared to fly to Washington from Raleigh, N.C. “You just have to seize it.” (With four moves at NHL trade deadline, Capitals in position for run, El-Bashir, Washington Post 3/4/10)
“If you had to pick three teams to get traded to, this is one of them,” he said. “You would have to pick the reigning Stanley Cup champions, and I won’t mention their name in this locker room. Or that team in San Jose. But I think this is the best team in the East.” (Joe Corvo, hurt against Capitals in November, now has a prominent place on their blue line, El-Bashir, Washington Post, 3/8/10)
Does this mean we can “Woop! Woop!” him?
"I don’t think too many guys try to talk to him and get him into the play ... if I can do that and it helps out our line then it’s what I’ll do." -- Jason Arnott on Alexander Semin

Taken another way it makes perfect sense. Corvo is a PP QB who plays lots of offensive minutes. Boudreau did not use him that way consistently. As a result, he was uncomfortable and didn’t really understand why he was traded to Washington if they weren’t going to use him in the role that he’s best suited for.
Matt Hendricks is a honey badger.
That’s how I read it – “If they didn’t bring me here to do what I can do, why’d they bring me here?”
Of course, the flip side of that is fuck that guy – he was brought here to do whatever was asked of him. And he failed.

Or maybe Boudreau didn’t use Corvo because he pretty much stunk everytime he stepped on the ice and he had little to no confidence in him. Not everything is Boudreau’s fault.
I’m not saying it’s entirely BB’s fault, I’m just saying that, from Corvo’s perspective, the team didn’t really utilize him in a way that set him or the team up for success.
Matt Hendricks is a honey badger.
Right – they gave him regular shifts at important times, and that did not set him or the team up for success.
Personally, I think BB could’ve used him more on the PP when it was obvious that MG52 was incapable of contributing there. Maybe they’d have gotten something out of him. But this guy’s all excuses and no heart. He’s essentially complaining that he didn’t get power-play time on a unit that was cruising along at 25% until it hit a seven-game cold streak. Cry me a river.

‘Nuff said. He should be able to do so much more than he does, something that has been noted during his tenures with CAR as well as the Caps (I don’t remember much of his playing in OTT). His lack of substance erodes the skills he does have and his lack of confidence makes him high maintenance for coaches.

To be 100% certain of playoffs in the East right now, you need 101 points. The Rangers have the 9th highest potential points with 100 (74 points, 13 games to go). Carolina (currently in 9th) can get to 102 points, and Buffalo can get to 104.
The Caps presently can max out at 114 points. Ditto for Tampa, by the way.

I agree that’s probably true, but not certainty with the points the teams can still get. Of course, there are head to head match-ups, such as with Carolina and the Rangers, where both teams can’t get 2 points. I just computed the number of remaining games, doubled that, and added to current points.

Daniel Sedin's quote on the Chara incident (from Puck Daddy)
“What are you doing to do the next time Trevor Gillies(notes) comes down and runs a guy into the thing? You can’t give him anything. And you tell the guys [Chara] has no history, so the next time he does it he still has no history because he didn’t get suspended. I don’t see the reasoning behind it. Give him at least something to show that’s not acceptable.”
…
“I’ll tell you this: if you say that you don’t know where things are around the ice, I think you’re not telling the truth,” Sedin said. "You play the game for 20 years, you know it’s there. It’s gotten to the point, you have to suspend guys if you hit the head. You have to do it even if guys say they didn’t mean to do it or it’s an accident. You have to start somewhere.

Joe Thornton’s is pretty ‘wow’ as well:
“It’s just something with Boston,” Thornton said. "It just seems like they have a horseshoe. We’ve seen the [Milan] Lucic cross-check to the head [of Maxim Lapierre(notes)] earlier, and there’s no disciplinary thing.
It’s just something about Boston and the disciplinary [process] is on their side. I’m not sure why that is. I’m not assuming that Colin’s kid is on the team and that’s why, but it’s really bizarre."
As someone noted last night, Thornton could/does have an agenda regarding Boston, Sedin does not; so Sedin’s words on the topic carry more weight.
Think that horseshoe is named Campbell?

I don’t know why I find myself definding Chara, but — Centre Bell is quirky. It doesn’t look like most other arenas. I wouldn’t have remembered there was a stanchion and glass there.

Exactly. I could understand the “he should have known exactly where it was” argument if the incident had occurred in Boston. But it happend in Montreal, a rink Chara only steps foot in 3 times a year.

Three times a year for eight or nine seasons plus a few times w/ the Isles. No excuse.

Laich would agree (from the Examiner clip above):
"As players you know where a player is vulnerable and you know if he’s a couple of feet from the boards. You’re aware of that," Laich said. "And if his back is turned you’re aware of that. If a guy’s got his head down you’re aware of that. You know where the stanchions are. . ."
So, since he’s played maybe 2% of his 990 career games in Montreal he should not only know the precise location of every stanchion or other potential injury causing obstacle specific to that arena but he should also be able to make an instantaneous evaluation of exactly where each of those are in relation to himself at any given moment? All because he’s played there a handful of times? Of course, you can’ t just limit that to Montreal, so should he know the exact layout of every single arena for each of his division foes since he plays there a few times a year? Do you expand that to all Eastern Conference teams? All NHL arenas?
Again, I’d buy 100% that he knew what he was doing if this occurred in Boston but I don’t believe that in a split second a player can simultaneously focus on the play he’s involved in as well as judge precisely where he is in relation to any given quirk in an arena’s layout that he plays in only a few times a year.

Yes, he should be familiar enough with Bell Centre to know where the stanchions are. He’s hopped over those boards hundreds of times. He knows, just like I’m sure he knows where the boards are soft or not, etc. It’s an important part of the game and as a veteran player I’m sure he’s familiar with a rink like in Montreal. Guys know, or should know, the quirks of each rink. He’s probably more familiar with Bell Centre than, say the Shark Tank.
I’m not addressing his intent, because only he knows his intent. My opinion is that he intended to push Pac onto the bench but he slid further down the wall. However, I think he’s familiar enough with Bell Centre to know how it may differ from the Garden.

How many times has Chara played there? He’s playing in Montreal’s division almost his whole career. Not like he’s never been there before.

You guys know this better than I do, but didn’t Chara have some history. I thought the other guy had taunted him a bit after an earlier game ending goal. Utterly inexcusable that Ovie gets result of play considered and Chara doesn’t.

Sedin’s quote is dead on, and exactly how I feel about it. This isn’t the time or place to give any benefit of the doubt. That play is so obviously dangerous, you suspend on the off chance that it was intentional. You suspend so that next time, nobody can say they didn’t know using the stanchion as a weapon is illegal. Even if it’s a couple of games, I can’t understand why they didn’t send any kind of signal.
Washington still suffers from legitimately below-average goaltending, which hurts them more than the defensive improvements help.

Agreed. I think Charra knew what he was doing, going a for a bit highlight hit. No chance he intended to inflict potentially life changing injuries, but I was shocked he didn’t get 5 games for it. It was long after the puck was gone, so the “hockey play” argument doesn’t quite fly.

I view it like high-sticking. If you hit the other guy’s head with your stick or the stanchion, you’ve gotta be responsible for the penalty.

Yup, be responsible for your actions, just as Ovi was held to account for his hit on Campbell.
Chara clearly pushed him and so should be held responsible for his actions. For those who wonder why injury severity is taken into account when deciding on supplemental discipline, here’s a good example. If Chara pushed Pac into the bench and he’s not hurt, is anyone screaming for a suspension? No. But same action results in a devistating injury then clearly supplemental discipline has to be considered if not handed out. IMO, Chara should have been suspended for his actions, even with the benefit of the doubt that it was not intentional.

Reasonable minds do differ on this point — once a month or so, if I remember correctly — but I fundamentally disagree with the notion that the severity of an injury should determine punishment.
Also, I think that supplemental discipline was considered, just not meted out. Who knows why; it truly is a roulette wheel of justice up there.

I believe the severity of the injury gives useful information about what happened. In that sense, it is fair to use it in determining the proper sanction. With that said, even if Max had gotten lucky in this case, I still think discipline was merited because the situation was so damned dangerous.
In other words, the NHL overemphasizes injuries when making its decisions, but I don’t think they are meaningless.

Overemphasizes… except when they don’t. I’m done trying to figure them out. This was an illegal play that normally doesn’t result in injury. This one resulted in injury. Normally that means a token suspension. Whatever. Glad it’s not our guy sleeping in the ICU.

Edmonton’s Sam Ganger is out for the season from that severed tendon hand injury he suffered in DC Wednesday.
In another turbulent turn of events as the Edmonton Oilers’ season winds down, centre Sam Gagner found out he had severed a tendon when teammate Ryan Jones inadvertently sliced Gagner’s left hand with his skate blade in Washington on Wednesday night….
Gagner, who had a surgical procedure in the Washington area Thursday afternoon, was in hospital and unavailable for comment but the hard-working Jones was dumbstruck that his teammate was KO’d in such a freak fashion.
insane. Ganger got stitches and came back to play the rest of the game. they took him to the doctor to make sure the cut was clean.

Torts on the instigator rule
“It’s not just that, but I think it’s a lousy rule,” Tortorella said. "I think the game has gotten [this] way because we have not allowed the players to police themselves. To me, that’s the bottom line.
“Players need to police themselves on the ice, not the rules, not supplementary discipline and all that,” he said. "That’s where I think we’ve lost honesty. Call me [old school], if you want. It’s wrong. “The instigator creates a mindset for players for players who you wouldn’t even see them if the instigator was not there.”

Sorry I don’t have the link, but Kukla tweeted that Bob McCown (not sure who he is) was on a Toronto radio station saying he heard Sid Crosby’s family is trying to convince him to retire.
Darren Dreger followed up with some quotes from Sid’s agent saying that his parents have been supportive and “will not feed any negative pulse to such a passionate mind”. Odd sounding quote. Sort of a denial I suppose. Would really, really suck if he was forced to retire as a result of this.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
That would suck, but at the same time Sid has accomplished everything there is to accomplish as a center in the NHL. He’s been the MVP, won the Stanley Cup, won the scoring title, tied for the league lead in goals… he’s got nothing left to win (other than the Selke, which he’s not going to win, considering he’s not the best defensive forward on his team, let alone the league) that he hasn’t already won.
The only thing remaining is the Masterton….which he might win if he does come back next year and plays at the top of his game again.

personally, I think it’s irresponsible of McCrown (and I’m not sure who that is, either) to be saying that. Fairly irresponsible of Kukla to be tweeting it, too. If it is true, that’s terrible and Crosby and his family deserve the privacy and space to make that decision without all the sharks and piranhas circling about. And if it’s not true, it’s nasty rumor mongering at its worst.

Bob McCown is a Toronto sports radio host for the Fan 590. I am not a fan of the guy, but even if I was I don’t think you should be dropping hints and insinuations about a guy’s health that way. Let Crosby speak for himself when the time and place is right.
