Caps Claim Marco Sturm, Waive D.J. King, Recall Jay Beagle

Photo

A trio of Saturday transactions for the Caps, as they've reportedly claimed Marco Sturm off waivers from the L.A. Kings, waived D.J. King and recalled Jay Beagle (with Mathieu Perreault reportedly set to take a night off). Sturm's stats for the season:

GP G A P +/- PIM PPG SHG GWG SOG
Marco Sturm 17 4 5 9 6 17 1 0 0 27

Chances are, these moves are just the beginning of what's sure to be a busy next 50 hours for Caps' GM George McPhee.

If GMGM is busy, I hope he makes like Natty and rides the shit out of the waiver wire. No reason to give up assets the way this team is playing. Pick up Sturm, pick up Schremp, pick up Conklin, maybe a spare D. Giving away anything of value is a waste on this crew.

No, but we could buy out his contract, I guess.

But the arrival of Conklin would mean Neuvy back down to Hershey (I think he’s waiver-exempt still, but not entirely sure. Varly is waiver-eligible now and would last exactly zero seconds.)

And that just doesn’t seem right, somehow.

Can’t buy it out now – can only do that during a window in the offseason (and since I can’t imagine it’s more than a deal for the current season, it’s moot).

We’d have $3M left, pending DJ King subtraction.

I do not want them to make changes, but I do not think they will be good the next 5 years if they continue to play the style of this year. It is really boring hockey to watch, and when it works it only seems to work to the tune of a one goal game. What it does do is get us shut out 9 times.

Wrt to the team’s current slump in form, can I be the one to offer this weird thought? I kind of hope we have a really really bad next 10 games so that we have to fight and scrap to make the playoffs. Look at last year’s Eastern Conf. Final: #7 seed vs. #8 seed, while the 1 seed that cruised into the playoffs didn’t make it past the first round (not naming any names). Maybe it’s best to have to fight right at the end?

by Rather Bengt on Feb 26, 2011 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

That’s their 1960s retro alternate. When the NHL went from 6-12, the TV contract with NBC stipulated that 2 of the teams had to be in California and all of the new teams should have differnent colors than the original 6. The NHL came up with Oakland (with Teal and gold), LA (purple and gold), Philly (Orange and Black), Minnesota (Green and gold), St. Louis (Blue and gold) and Pittsburgh (Blue and Black). NBC was big on pushing bright colors as color TV was new in the 1960s and because they were owned by a company that made and sold TVs (RCA, which was later acquired by GE). The idea was to get folks to buy color TVs…

The NHL Network did an episode of “A Day That Changed the Game” on the 1966 expansion and how the cities were selected. NBC wanted to make sure they had new teams in each of the three largest populated time zones, and two in California (the original plan was LA and Seattle or Vancouver, but NBC insisted on the Bay Area, even though the only suitable arena was in Oakland. not in San Francisco.) It was also interesting to see that one bid that was turned down was from Baltimore. Had that happened, it’s likely the Caps would not be in NHL, or at least not the current franchise. They received a bunch of bids from LA, from the other cities, along with two from Buffalo and Vancouver: two bids that were rock solid, but NBC didn’t want those cities for the TV contract. Both of those bids were represented in 1969 and awarded teams in 1970.

Sturm...

… is going to likely be put into the roster spot that Eric Fehr had prior to his injury. Fehr as we all know is going to be out for two four who knows how many weeks with the shoulder problem. Estimating how long a shoulder problem takes to heal is the same as estimating the length of a piece of string when you can’t see it. There’s no real way to tell. Sometimes shoulders don’t heal properly at all (consider Michael Nylander) .

If Sturm works out, then maybe he gets an extension. If he plays well and then goes on to another team after the season, that’s ok too, since Eric Fehr might be back by training camp (I hope it’s sooner).

Of course we need to speculate on his number now, since 10 is obviously not available. He has also worn 16 and 19, both of which are also not available (19 with the Sharks, 16 with Boston). I would say he probably picks up the 9 jersey vacated by Brendan Morrison, or perhaps Flash’s 14 jersey.

by MikeL-Pivonka on Feb 26, 2011 1:19 PM EST reply actions

It would be too soon for someone to take on Flash’s 14, I think. Bad karma.

But for random number speculation? Let’s follow the number progression: 19, 16, 10, which would be a -3 then a -6, so in progression -9 would be 1. Nope, taken by Varly. Maybe Sturm takes #40 and confuses all visitors who see those of us with Varlamov #40 jerseys from the past two seasons.

Thus, with no real basis for anything, I say he takes #36.

Since coming back from the tendinitis, he looked like he was getting his bearings in the Ducks game, but against the Wild looked fine.

I think he’s still getting up to speed, but he’s a good depth acquisition for the Caps.

When he first came back from the injury, Terry Murray pushed him pretty hard (something I questioned at the time), but he had decent production. Then the tendinitis flared up. He’d been recovering from that before he returned Feb. 23rd.

That’s probably up to Tambellini. He apparently keeps asking for Schenn and nothing else. But the Kings need a 2nd line center going forward, so that doesn’t work for us.

We have many, many other great prospects or even roster players that I could see moving, but I don’t think a year of Hemsky is worth the value of Schenn to our team. I’d rather we do nothing if it comes to that.

With Lokti out now, apparently, it’d leave us with Kopi, Zeus, and a rookie (Trevor Lewis) at that position. But Stoll does a lot — penalty kill and power play, great faceoff man. We also need some experience at center going into next year.

Bob McKenzie threw some cold water on the idea of a young core player moving. As with anything, I suppose it would depend on the return. For a big name? Sure, I think some would move. But we don’t see many big names out there, as far as we know.

I think an offer floating around in a rumor was Simmonds or Clifford + Voynov or Teubert + 1st for Hemsky. Voynov is actually NHL-ready IMO, it’s just that we have tons of defensemen. If Tambellini would rather keep Hemsky, I understand that point of view. Really, the Oilers have lots of reasons to keep him.

My understanding is that Hemsky wasn’t really “available” per say. Just that Tambellini would listen to offers, and basically if he could get a huge return, he’d bite and deal him.

I have seen Sturm a fair bit on the international scene, playing for Germany at the World Championships and the Olympics, as well as in other minor international tournaments. He always impressed me, sadly even against our national team at times. Especially with his defensive play. His play along the boards seemed especially strong with solid grinding and determination to go for the puck, though this is a few years back.

At first glance, I like this. Sturm’s been a consistent 20-goal scorer for the last decade, except one year where he was hurt. Maybe he’ll get the offense going with an injection of new blood. I’m assuming we won’t see him tonight though.

Where will he end up playing? 2nd line maybe? Or on the 3rd with Mackan and Chimera?

I’m starting to wonder if Chimera will be a Capital come Monday at 3pm. Nothing specific, but just thinking he might be someone that could head out, especially given his recent performance.

The con here is that he appears to be the type of guy that GMGM likes.

If Sturm is speedy, he could possibly be an effective winger with Mackan and Chimera. A line that fast with a scorer, set-up man, and net crasher could be dangerous.

Matt Bradley: He has sensitive skin, no?

by timmyv38 on Feb 26, 2011 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

That’s putting two left wings and a center on one line; I don’t really see that happening.

Honestly, I think one of the things you could see GMGM do is demote Perreault back to Hershey; this would free up Brooks Laich to play at 3C, which is a role to which he’s a bit more suited than 2C. Chimera-Laich-Fehr*/Gordon/Bradley could be an effective energy line with some size. Sturm-90-28 makes some sense as a scoring line, too.

He played a bunch of years with Boston so he’s only played 11 games against them, but in those 11 games he’s scored 7 goals. The team has scored the most goals against is Montreal (15) but that’s in 38 games.

Our secondary scoring has gone to hell, and like someone mentioned above, Sturm would be good for 4th in points per game on this team.

He had a few 20 goal seasons with San Jose and Boston – you make a line like

Sturm – 2C – Semin

That’d be intriguing.

And King getting waived just makes it more blatantly obvious that said trade was a giant black mark.

I read it as convenience. For example, MP85 is waiver-exempt (forget that he’s only on the roster because of the C mess and started the season in Hershey). The only other player on the roster who is that is MJ90, and he’s not going to Hershey, even on paper. If we needed the roster spot until the deadline,Perreault would be shipped to Hershey post-haste. But he could be back on Tuesday (if we need his spot, he’s probably not coming back, but I think you get the point).

The Prelude

The Kings are looking for scoring wingers. The Caps, while in need of more scoring, are looking for a center.

Something tells me that this move is just a prelude to some other moves for both teams. The Kings needed to clear some space to bring in another wing and the Caps needed to get another wing because one of theirs is headed out to get a center.

Puck Daddy weighs in:

It was stunning when the Los Angeles Kings placed Sturm on waivers yesterday, considering he had just returned from injury and waived his no-trade clause with the Boston Bruins to rejoin GM Dean Lombardi with the Kings earlier this season.

His claim by the Capitals today wasn’t a surprise based on their needs: scoring depth and a kick in the ass after a lackadaisical 6-0 loss at home to the New York Rangers last night.

But it is interesting to see the Caps make a waiver claim on a $3.5 million cap hit (which will be pro-rated) considering they have $1,613,658 in projected cap space via Cap Geek. This could mean a trip for defenseman Tom Poti(notes) to LTIR, considering he makes $3.5 million against the cap.

This is completely unimportant, but...

I have always liked Sturm. And I find this acquisition funny. I got an Xbox two months ago (finally, after all this time, thanks baby) and have been playing NHL 11 (thats all I wanted, and its all I really play, happily). To learn the game, since I haven’t played but a few times since my original Xbox went caput years ago, I created a player and went into be a pro mode, going undrafted straight to the caps. Figured it was a good way to learn to play again. My team, 3 seasons in, is weird. i spent half the first season in hershey, then got moved up to the caps 3rd line, with chimera and fehr. Then the next season, half my team changed (Alzner was let go, wtf?) but I ended up with Sturm on the second line. I score with that mofo all the time, though his passing is shite.
No relevance to real players, obviously, but more than once I’ve thought how the Caps could have used a healthy Sturm and his solid two-way play over the past year (and last as well). Now, here he is. So I’m happy, in a what does it really matter kind of way.
Like i’ve said for quite some time this season, giving up assets for this years team seems a waste. Wait till the summer when prices are more reasonable and the deals are designed with more than a hope and a prayer in mind. Our boys have dropped too far in trade value this year. I’d have moved Fehr last summer; flash too, but I like the Hannan pick up. Last year was the year to go all in.
This is the year you play your hand as far as possible, watch the flop, assess, and likely fold. We’re playing with middling cards, and they’re off-suit.
It really does suck.

6’4" with no physical upside, no consistent point production, and only one year where he met any sort of expectations, (plus, it was during a year where everyone followed the leader and played above their capabilities) during an injury-riddled short career full of less than inspired performances and a nose for staying out of traffic, corners, altercations, physical play, and consistent effort. Pass. I wish it was different, but everytime I see the guy, I think Getzlaf. Coming back to earth showed us what Fehr is really capable of, and thats frustrating fans and coaches.

Maybe that’s what people see, but every year the stats—rate stats, Corsi, zone shift, now scoring chances—say otherwise.

Or it’s possible that, like most of the team, Fehr is neither as good as he was last season, nor as bad as he is this season.

And has been discussed a bunch with Knuble, Fehr is a complimentary player, not a guy that is going to drive a line on his own. When the talent doesn’t play well, the complimentary pieces are going to look poor as well.

Not quite sure about that. I’m thinking right now Fehr can both drive a line (well, a 3rd or 4th, not 1st or 2nd) and be a complement, but is pretty bad at switching modes when he needs to, not realizing trying to drive a line when he already has AO-19 is counterproductive.

I think Fehr will always be a force multiplier, whether he’s on the 1st line or the 3rd line. That’s just the guys game. His game is based on going to good areas and using his shot, which is probably still his best asset.

I’d never expect him to carry any line. If he’s supposed to, we’re in trouble.

King

Was worthless…I know alot of us were happy to see a real enforcer hit the team, but since he really didnt play to much and he did less than Brash in anything other than fights…And he really didnt fight in the first place. Only a few times and most of those were old rivalries and matched-up BS. I was hoping for more out of King so I guess losing him isnt amazing…Plus Hendricks has really stepped up.

by J4ESTER on Feb 26, 2011 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

Do not call him worthless…he was a good teammate off ice and I am reasonably sure he mentored a lot of the Caps in fighting techniques and whatnot. I know for sure that Hendricks was consulting with him in the Toronto game after Matt got bloodied by Mike Brown.

I agree. He wasn’t good on the ice, but he did seem to have some role as a fighting coach. I’m glad he isn’t eating up a roster spot, but no hard feelings either.

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

by skyywise on Feb 26, 2011 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

I still think King could of been capable on ice if given more games. I don’t recall him looking horrid when he did play other than picking some silly times to fight. He’s merely the victim of being a poor acquisition because of Hendricks.

He was brought in to be an enforcer but Hendricks has been doing that in addition to center, agitator, energy guy, grinder, checker, etc etc. Management obviously saw that, and its much better to have 1 guy good at a lot of things over 1 guy who’s decent at some things and only great at 1 thing.

Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."

Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.

by breaklance on Feb 26, 2011 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

I do remember King being terrible when playing. I can think of at least two goals that are directly his fault. And that’s in minimal TOI. And I’m pretty sure one of them was against TOR. Both of those games went to SO, so not giving up that goal could have been helpful.

by Charlie Foxtrot on Feb 26, 2011 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

Well I call him worthless. He didnt do much for the team. I did see him teach a few things to Hendricks at KCI one practice, but since Hendricks can hold his own “most” of the time…he was worthless. It didnt help that BB didnt play him much, but you should make the most of what you get.

by J4ESTER on Feb 26, 2011 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

come on, seriously? Make the most of 3 minutes a game? After not playing for two months? I call BS. He deserved a better chance than what he got. Others did.

by The Jade Donkey on Feb 26, 2011 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

Well if you get 3 mins a game and you were acquired to be an enforcer and the opportunity arrises to take on another enforcer than you should do it. And BB would play him when there was an opportunity to do so against certain teams. And then that comes back to the original question of WHY was he acquired in the first place?

by J4ESTER on Feb 26, 2011 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

No, you shouldn’t just go fight the other enforcer just to do it. That sort of hockey is in the past. He was acquired to keep other teams from running around and taking cheap shots like they did after Brashear left. Hard to police when you don’t even get a sweater. The guy is a better hockey player than what BB has made him out ot be by scratching him for months at a time. BB doesn’t like enforcers, and he’s proved it with Brash and now King.
Stephen Peat couldn’t play hockey. King was way better than Peat. Its a shame he never got the chance to prove it.

The Way is riddled with deep, dark holes.

by The Jade Donkey on Feb 26, 2011 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

I agree about the “protection” part he provided but there were times he played where he failed to do that…Hence why I call him worthless…

by J4ESTER on Feb 26, 2011 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t mean to say the guy was great. He wasn’t that skilled. I just don’t think he was utilized correctly, thats all. BB made him worthless by finding nothing in him that was worthy.
That chapter is now ended. This season is soon to be ended as well.
Heads will roll.

I’m going to say that I don’t think King ever got a fair shot. He was never played enough to get a feel for the team, never got to contribute in any way, and went months in between games. I’ve seen other players questionably get more chances than King ever got.

The Way is riddled with deep, dark holes.

by The Jade Donkey on Feb 26, 2011 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

He wasn’t better than the players that were getting a sweater in place of him. If it was even close to debatable than he would have gotten dressed more.

At his normal best he would get the puck in deep and tie the other teams defender up for 5 seconds before skating back out of the zone. There isn’t a lot of value added in that.

Depends on whether the injuries can get worse. Backstrom right now is still better than all but, max, 3 forwards on the roster. Head injuries are notorious for getting worse each successive time, especially when bunched together. I’m not sure how long it’ll take for Backstrom’s thumb to heal if he sits out versus if he plays.

I’m trying to figure out who’s more to blame for the fact that Backstrom is even playing through the injury tonight. You could blame Boudreau based on his track record of not resting players for inconsequential games. You could blame McPhee for giving Boudreau no other options.

Not good.

by Kolzilla on Feb 26, 2011 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

some friends and I were having this discussion last night, more more along the lines of, for a “minor” injury like Backstrom’s, do you treat him like an adult, because he is an adult, and let him play if he wants to play? These guys are competitive, they don’t want to sit out, with this particular injury you’re not going to make it any worse. If he says he wants to play, should people respect that?

On this particular case, I keep finding myself coming down on the “if he wants to play, let him play” side of things.

If he’s not going to improve then the Caps are fucked anyway. That means we’ll go through the rest of the season with Backstrom on the wing and we’ll be dispatched quickly in the first round.

If there is a possibility that his hand improves enough that he’ll be able to take faceoffs and, eventually, regain strength on his shot, then the team should do everything in its power to make sure he heals in time for the post-season.

Athletes always say they want to play, especially hockey players. Especially hockey players not named Phil Kessel. That’s why the coaches and medical staff need to have the courage to tell players they’re not allowed to play.

I like the basis of a Boyes-Stewart for Semin deal. Not sure what would be needed to be added, but the salaries are close. Would give us,

OV – Backstrom – Knuble
Sturm – Boyes – Stewart
Laich – Johansson/Perrault – Fehr (when he is healthy)
Chimera – Steckel/Gordon – Hendricks/Bradley (one would replace Fehr while out)

by CapsFanSince1979 on Feb 26, 2011 2:45 PM EST reply actions

I don’t see it happen. Boyes doesn’t play centre this year , mainly wing I do believe. And why would StL give up on Stewart already. I think we should target Berglund off the Blues if anyone.

Boyes has played the wing due to the centre depth, but he plays the middle as well. I am not saying they are giving up Stewart, they wants offense, and Semin would give them more than Stewart.

So, Blues get Stewart for Johnson (a dud of a 1st overall pick) and a conditional 1st (lets assume that the other players are a wash…which they are not as the guy given by Colorado is better then the guy given by StL) and you are saying that the Caps could not get Stewart in a deal for Semin. Sounds to me like we cannot get much for Semin considering Stewart was only worth a mistake high first and a mid first.

by CapsFanSince1979 on Feb 26, 2011 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

First, EJ is not a dud.

Second, no way the Blues want Semin. They like tough, physical players. They brought in Stewart to be part of the core. They don’t want a player like Semin, especially not at his salary, especially if it means they have to give up a young, cost-controlled, power forward.

I’d love to get Berglund back, but there’s no way the Blues give up a big, physical center who’s starting to produce points without getting an equivalent prospect or roster player back, and we don’t have one of those.

by Wheeler on Feb 26, 2011 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed 100%. Stewart was the centerpiece of that trade for the Blues. They probably coveted Stewart to be willing to part with EJ. EJ is far from a dud. The guy is young and still has huge upside.

by Truculence on Feb 26, 2011 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

I can tell you the media in Toronto (Mackenzie, Drager, McLean) all stated that EJ is considered a dud for a first round pick by most GMs in the NHL. Still a good player, but not worth top half first rounder and certainly not worth the 1st overall they gave up.

They called the trade a save face move by the Blues for the poor draft selection they made.

by CapsFanSince1979 on Feb 26, 2011 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

Time will tell. I say he’ll be a quality player. Maybe not the next Chris Pronger, but he’s going to be a top pair guy, or a stud of a second pair guy if COL has other studs to play on the top pair. He’s only 22 and he lost a full year of development to a freak injury.

I know it was a small sample, but in the only important games he’s ever played since he went pro, he was awesome. He was probably the third best D on Team USA.

Can you link? I haven’t heard that. I know the MSM is kind of down on him (hard to recover when one of your best developmental years is lost thanks to a freak injury), but then again, American MSM likes his Olympics-ness. He’s only 23 (Backstrom draft year), and considering D mature around 26-29, he’s got plenty of time. He has the frame and skills, he just needs to put it together.

I agree, but people need a little reality check, especially for a D. EJ is nowhere near where he’ll be, and he’s already a solid top 4 and a borderline top pair depending on the team. He’s played just over 200 games so far. He should hit 300 next year if he stays healthy. At the end of next season we’ll have a much better idea about where he’ll end up.

Why so far fetched?

I would venture that Perreault is viewed as a middling prospect by most NHL GMs. Semin is an enigma who could explode if motivated, only signed for another year. The first round pick would be most likely in the 20s, so it’s not great value either.

All that for a guy with a high contract, but IMO, not a terrible one, until 2014.

by Charlie Foxtrot on Feb 26, 2011 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

Semin and a First is way too much. That’s two elite value assets. They just won’t get that. They are partially trying to unload Statsny’s contract, and when a team is in that boat they never get full value. Even if they weren’t trying to unload the contract, an elite scorer and a First is way too much.

MP had nothing to do with my reaction. They can have him in that deal. It’s the First that I disagree with. Semin + MP makes sense to me if they want another C or want to move MP to wing.

I don’t know if they would or not. I tend to doubt it. I’m not sure why they’d want MP. They are loaded with young Cs so unless they want to move him to the wing it doesn’t make sense. Semin to COL makes too much sense to actually happen.

I cannot see the Caps making that deal. Statsny is not a point a game player (just missed) and he has a bad contract. Semin has been and has proven it over a couple more years. I would much rather see the Caps not be locked into 3 more years of Statsny and instead have one year of Semin (and sign him on a year per year basis). Less risk. Make this deal does not give you anything. You move the player from RW to C and still have a hole

His contract is pretty good. Think Zetterberg—all his numbers are playing against top lines, not slackers.

You are not going to pay (you cannot afford to) to commit $6.6M for three more years for a 2nd line centre. You can do it at RW because you are not locking in and you can give 1st line minutes to your 2nd line RW. If we got locked in to that contract then it will be really hard to keep the Alzner/Carlson/Neuvy/Varly’s of the world. WIth Semin’s contract you can because if the above 4 prove their worth you can let Semin walk. You would have to trade Stastny to make space, which you could probably do, but may not.

Oh yeah, one big difference with giving that money to Stastny vs Zetterberg. Z is a proven winner. Stastny has barely made the playoffs and when he did he only got a .5 PPG.

by CapsFanSince1979 on Feb 26, 2011 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t see how you can justify that cost for a wing over a C. I sorta understand the term argument, but it’s not all that long that it really kills us. With the cap going up, we’ll be able to work around it.

First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!

by Rob Parker on Feb 26, 2011 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

Spot on. I’d rather give term and price to a C over a winger, especially if that C is infinitely more consistent and comfortable playing against tough competition.

by Charlie Foxtrot on Feb 26, 2011 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

And the “proven winner” argument is bogus. It’s a team sport. Z wouldn’t be a “proven winner” if he was unlucky enough to get drafted in FLA or almost any other team besides DET.

Z is also protected a bit by Datsyuk. Statsny hasn’t been protected like that. Duchene is starting to protect him, but he’s not really there yet.

First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!

by Rob Parker on Feb 26, 2011 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, but when teams make trades and sign players you always hear them say “proven winner”, “comes with cup experience”, etc. That is paid for. Look at the TSN article on the three guys just picked up on waivers. Each players playoff experience is referenced because that is seen as value.

by CapsFanSince1979 on Feb 26, 2011 4:04 PM EST up reply actions

I thought we were talking about whether we’d want Statsny or Semin. Not the relative trade value anymore. I don’t care that Statsny is younger and has been stuck on bad teams. I’d rather have him than Semin. Z winning a lot has nothing to do with that analysis. If your argument is that we can’t get Statsny for Semin then it becomes relevant (except that it makes Semin more valuable and Statsny less valuable, which makes it easier to get Statsny). It sounds like you are saying you don’t want Statsny because he’s not proven. I call BS. (Also, he does have a Silver on a team that wasn’t even supposed to come close to medaling.)

First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!

by Rob Parker on Feb 26, 2011 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

You can do whatever you want with the rest of the analysis, but the “winner!1” trope is really, really tired. Zetterberg is a phenomenal player, one of the very best in the league, but he doesn’t win squat without guys like Pavel Datsyuk and Nik Lidstrom. Hockey’s a team – if you switched Stastny and Zetterberg, the Wings would still be good and the Avs would still be years away. There’s absolutely no validity to the “Winner” argumentation.

Statsny may not score like Semin, but he’s real good against tough competition, very smart, and not prone to long lapses like Semin. Scoring ain’t everything (see Caps Clips for more). Statsny won’t jet after one year, less risk. C is a much more important position than W, as well. Especially trying to get through the Eastern powerhouses in the playoffs. I’d make that trade in a second, and I bet (hope) the Caps would too. I doubt COL would.

I have noticed that Semin has averaged the same points per game in playoffs as he does in the regular season where Stastny has not. Personally, I do not think either shows up. I just think that we transfer the problem. I would rather see us get two top 6 capable players for Semin and therefore we fix the glaring hole and not transition it.

by CapsFanSince1979 on Feb 26, 2011 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

We won’t get two top 6 guys for Semin. Not two good ones. We’ll get a very good C, if not great, and that makes us a better team than having Semin does.

As has been said a million times, averages mean nothing with Semin. Sure, he has the same average, but he’s on a 14 point scoreless streak. He gets white hot or ice cold. You just never know. You can’t count on a guy like that in the playoffs. He also plays the least important position on the ice and is the second best guy on the team at that position. And as has been pointed out at least twice, Statsny does his damage against the opposition’s top lines. Semin doesn’t. That would free up the AO line to battle easier opposition and thus produce more.

I personally think you notice his warts more because you see him more. Before his recent 17 game no goal streak, his greatest over the last four years was 6 games.

Over that same time Stastny has had a 12, an 11, a 9, four 8, and three 7 games no goal streak

by CapsFanSince1979 on Feb 26, 2011 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

Of course, he has never been a 30 goal scorer as most of his points are assists.

BTW, you could also argue he is getting 1st line wingers to play with and not 2nd line forwards like Semin (Laich and Johansson this year, sometime Flash, sometimes Belanger, etc)

Those are long streaks. The guy also isn’t a goal scoring center. Not at all. His greatest asset is his playmaking. Playmaking centers often can go a little while without scoring.

by Charlie Foxtrot on Feb 26, 2011 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, mentioned that in a follow on post. I personally value goals a hell of a lot more than assists. Mainly because they can grant two assists for each goal scored.

by CapsFanSince1979 on Feb 26, 2011 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

Okay, but go back look at where his pointless streaks are. Because even though HE might not be scoring goals, he should be consistent in dishing the puck to guys that are. That’s why he’s considered a very good, if not great, playmaker.

by Charlie Foxtrot on Feb 26, 2011 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

And he’s playing great D while doing it. His production is up against Getzlaf, Thornton, Datsyuk, Sedin (when COL is at home), Crosby, Ovechkin, Stamkos, etc.

And Statsny isn’t a scorer, and I’ve never based my critiques of Semin on his goal droughts. His play is hot and cold. His goals tend to come in large bunches when he’s hot, but that’s not nearly the only thing to look for when evaluating Sasha.

Nor do I. I would never want to pick up a player on pace for 65 points, who is getting 1st line center minutes and on a contract of $6.6M a year with three years still to go. I would rather have the guy who is inconsistent (put still produces more offense in the end) that is being paid the same and provides more flexibility.

by CapsFanSince1979 on Feb 26, 2011 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

And that production would go down as a 2nd line centre. We would be sitting here saying…man I cannot believe we have $6.6M committed to a 50 point player.

Especially when his wingers would be Laich and Fehr

by CapsFanSince1979 on Feb 26, 2011 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

You have no reason to think his production would drop because of even strength. His production, if it drops, will drop because BB doesn’t give him PPTOI. He’ll have at least as good wings on the Caps, even with Semin gone, as he plays with in COL.

First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!

by Rob Parker on Feb 26, 2011 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

That would be persuasive, if accurate. But Statsny isn’t getting 1C minutes. Even if he were, it would be somewhat misleading. He plays against the other teams’ best players at ES, that means a lot in itself and you haven’t addressed it once. Duchy gets more TOI at 5/5, against easier competition. Their teammates aren’t really distinguishable, but COL is weak on the wings (the entire reason they’d be looking at Semin). How much is it worth to you to allow AO and Nick to play against easy competition and get lots of offensive zone starts?

First Round Exit! (Clap Clap ClapClapClap) First Round Exit!

by Rob Parker on Feb 26, 2011 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

The big thing here is that Stastny relieves AO-19 of some D zone draws, and relieves Marjo of some 2nd-tough-minutes. 8-19 in the d zone was killing this team earlier in the season, Marjo’s been getting killed in his minutes all season. With a good two-way 2C, that shouldn’t happen anymore.

And it’s fair to say I see Semin’s warts more because I watch him. I don’t even think Statsny is elite or anything. He’s just a very good C. But C is more important and we need at least one more very good C. Add in the fact that Sasha isn’t even reliable enough for us to try to build a team around Ws and it’s an easy decision for me.

Exactly. Was there something wrong with the first round pick they gave up? No. They just had to give up value to get the top scorer in the league. Maybe they had already seen something in Flash they didn’t like, but I doubt it. He was traded less than two seasons after he was drafted and he hadn’t even spent any time with DET’s system. It’s not too bad…I have cleared a lot of my plate this past week to prep for it.. Trade Deadline Day is one of my own personal holidays. I would have booked it off if it wasn’t year-end.

Everyone re-counted and there are only 22 on the active roster at the moment, not 23. So, something else definitely is in the works.

since weekend waivers take 48 hours, can trades be made today, or are we stuck waiting until Monday?

Also, none of what Caps did involves waivers. Green is off roster because of personal matter (death in the family). Perreault is assigned, waiver exempt.

I didn’t know if Green was technically “off” the roster but certainly not available. IIRC, I didn’t think Fehr was off the roster when he left for his grandmother’s funeral. But we were short of people big time at that time, since Hendricks was ill, forcing a less than ready Semin to play

Since he’s off to Calgary, he’s probably going to miss enough time/games to qualify for IR (not LTIR) is my guess and it’s not like he isn’t already hurt.

Fehr just missed one game when his grandmother died. Essentially, the flight days and the funeral but was back for the next game (two days later). But, with Green injured, the Caps will encourage him to take his sweet time about getting back to Washington.

the Isles and no DJ King on the ice- Yikes

So we waive DJ King right before the first game that we really need him? Would feel better going into the Isles games with King on the ice, assuming of course BB would have dressed him. I almost felt sorry for the Guins the other night against the Isles. Almost.

If you assume the Beagle call up is for some size and toughness, I guess we will find out if Beagle can actually throw ‘em. He has looked good pushing and shoving and getting in people’s faces when necessary but he hasn’t done a lot of fighting in the minors.

I could be wrong, but I wouldn’t expect the same kind of animosity in an Isles-Caps game as in an Isles-Pens game. They dislike the pens a lot more than they dislike us.

And I don’t think a Cap has knocked an Islander out of the game.

I think people have the Islanders pegged as some sort of tough SOB team after their antics against Pittsburgh.

They decided that the hit on Comeau was dirty and they weren’t going to take it lying down. In their minds, their actions were warranted because it was payback.

I doubt King would be useful in a game against them.

Truth spoken. Most Pens fans I’ve talked to, including my brother in law, have many memories of hating the Isles. If that team ever got good again, their hatred would be revived.

Re Marco Sturm

A factoid from Wikipedia:

A notoriously strong skater, he is often referred to as “the fastest German on ice.” His forays into the offensive zone are known as the blitzkrieg. In the 1999 All-Star Game, Sturm had the second best time to Peter Bondra in the fastest skater competition

And likely his most famous goal (go to around 2:34):

Rice is great if you're really hungry and want to eat two thousand of something.

by Rather Bengt on Feb 26, 2011 4:00 PM EST reply actions

I like the way you think, but I’d be a lot more excited about Strum if that had been more recent than 1999. Also, he hasn’t been in int’l competition since 2008. I just can’t get excited about a player with this kind of knee injury.

by capsfan4 on Feb 26, 2011 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn’t say get excited, but he was essentially no risk/good reward.

by Charlie Foxtrot on Feb 26, 2011 4:04 PM EST up reply actions

I think it’s an alright pickup for the Caps. He’s a good veteran and plays a 2-way game when he isn’t injured. I am not doing cartwheels over the move but I am fine with it. The links above were more just an intro to people on Strum for those not familiar with him.

A few friends and I have been telling each other fake trades/waiver pick ups to freak each other out and basically try to trick them into thinking their favorite player was moved from the team.

I.E. – Texted my flyer friend, during a test mind you, so he couldnt check the internet, that the flyers had traded JVR+Carle+1st Rounder for Vokoun+McCabe. He freaked.

I was woken up by a text from the Caps Mobile Alert saying we picked up Marco Sturm. And i attempted to text them back saying something along the lines that Marco Sturm would never be on waivers and they have to be more creative and realistic than that.

In summary, me likey.

I mean, if his name was Goethe, then maybe it’d be worth a mention. But Sturm? It just jumps to the mind, doesn’t it?

Now mind you, I know the Caps have struggled at home recently but this # kinda hit home.

5 – the number of home wins in the last three months.

Not like the Caps were running the tables in 98. I remember 3 consecutive games and losses against the then-bottom dwelling TB Lightning at one point.

I picked a good day to be away from computer/phone, etc. going to be fun catching up.

Quick reaction to Sturm, always liked him as a player, if it doesn’t create any cap issue related to another deal, I honestly like it better than Kovalev if Sturm is healthy enough, big if I guess.

Supposed to be in Hershey tonight, not doing that either and now Orlov debuting there, bah, crazy day.

Not going to be possible to catch up on all these posts, lol

The current roster situation:

Contract count: excluding 4 CHL players = 48 contracts

3G: Ford and Neuvirth and Varlamov*

13F: Backstrom, Beagle, Bradley, Chimera, BGordon, Hendricks, Johansson, King**, Knuble, Laich, Ovechkin, Semin, Steckel, Sturm

7D: Alzner, Carlson, Erskine, Green***, Hannan, Schultz, Sloan

*Day to day: Green (I assume on non-active roster due to death in the family), Varlamov

  • Waivers: King

IR:
Fehr: last game played 1/14
Poti: last game played 1/12

by sk84fun_dc on Feb 26, 2011 6:48 PM EST reply actions

Perreault – As some have mentioned, whether banged up, possibly involved in a trade or simply sent down, roster spot was needed.

Schremp

Should we claim schemp to fill the roster and trade semin and MP? and on another note as far as the 2nd line center discussion is concerned, what about travis zajac? the devils need toresig n parise and need to make cap space.

by JuniorVars on Feb 26, 2011 7:08 PM EST reply actions

I’d be astonished if Zajac was traded and fwiw, the Devils have room for next year to sign Parise. Langenbrunner is gone, Arnott is UFA and if he re-signs it will be at a lower cap hit.

More Sturm

So there are a lot of posts about this move but I have mixed feelings. I do agree he brings a lot to the table and some of it are the intangibles they need – grit, board work, speed. As a Caps fan in the Boston area I saw a ton of Sturm and was always impressed by his determination, hard work and consistency. Coming from the Julien system he has excellent defensive awareness and positional play. These are all positives for a team that needs a few more players like Sturm.

That said, when I watch the Caps lose (or nearly lose) games what sticks out to me is confusion on defensive responsibility in and while leaving the offensive zone primarily by the young centers (but even by the wings who don’t seem to recognize the D-man pinching), lack of drive for the puck on the boards in both zones and in front of the net in the offensive zone and a hesitation on the part of D-men on the breakout (to be fair often because the forwards have left the zone too early) so my question is how does Sturm help the Caps win now when he really only helps on the board work (will drive the net but not strong enough to plant himself there)? I guess I was confused with the Hemsky talk for the same reason.

by Steve47 on Feb 26, 2011 9:57 PM EST reply actions

Board work helps you keep the puck, which helps you get more chances to score (and less time controlling the puck for the other team)
