I didn’t realize how similar the aggregate numbers are for the Caps and Rangers (via the NHL.com preview by some new guy named Masisak):

The Capitals are scoring 2.67 goals per game while allowing 2.43 while their power-play percentage sits at 16.8 percent and the penalty-killing proficiency is at 85.4 percent. Meanwhile, the Rangers are scoring 2.66 goals per game and allowing 2.47. New York’s power play is operating at 16.3 percent and the PK has been successful 83.9 percent of the time. Both teams have 32 wins

The thin difference between a 74-point team with 32 wins and a 68-point team with 32 wins? Getting past 60 minutes. The Caps have 10 losses where they earned a point (to the Rangers’ four). The Rangers have seven more losses in regulation, not making it to the extra time session.

Currently, there are seven 32-win teams in the League, with their points spread from the Rangers’ (and Ducks’) 68 to the Caps’ 74. And the Ducks are on the outside looking in at the playoffs as of right now, while the Caps are fairly comfortable in (albeit in different Conferences, so it’s not apples-to-apples). Point being, in today’s NHL, for a lot of teams it’s not just how many you win, but how you lose the games you lose.

by J.P. on Feb 25, 2011 7:45 AM EST up reply actions

Which will have a perverse effect. As Mirtle points out in a tweet, the new tie-breaker rule eliminating shootout wins becomes important (or as he put it “comes in handy”). You might get those points in those extra time losses, but those extra time wins might come back to bite you if you’ve gone beyond 65 minutes to get them. The Rangers and Montreal are two of those teams tied with 32 wins, but the Rangers have seven of theirs via shootout, Montreal only two. Those kinds of seeding issues will have folks pouring over the NHL.com shootout tables the last week of the season.

If you've read this far...seek help.

That whole change has never sat well with me. “Shootout wins count… unless they don’t.” Why add the extra layer of confusion and (further) cheapen your gimmick?

It’s the half-assed NHL at work again.

Faced with the patent absurdity of the fact that some games generate two standings points while other games generate three, the NHL concocted a system whereby…some games generate only one real point.

I will say that the OT and shootout is much more entertaining than watching two divisional/conference foes strangle the last 5 minutes of a tied game, like they used to.

Patron saint of quality footwear.

by fat_daddyo on Feb 25, 2011 8:45 AM EST up reply actions

I love the OT. I just wish they would extend it to 10 minutes and if it’s still tied, let it end there. There have been at least a half-dozen Cap games this year where I felt that neither team deserved to lose.

Guess that whole “make the plaoyffs by winning a Gimmick on the last day of the season” didn’t sit too well.

You’d think the NHL would have taken that example and run with it instead of further muddying things up by trying the make the shootout even less important.

Either embrace it or get rid of it. They can’t sell it as the most exciting moment in all of sports by trying to make it less and less relevant.

Imagine the trade deadline if every game were worth the same amount of points. The NHL wouldn’t have nearly as many teams teetering on the line between ‘play-off bound buyers’ and ‘maybe next time sellers’.

That being said, with equal points in every game, teams would probably have a good idea of whether or not they’re making the play-offs well before the deadline.

Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!

I guess one thing worth noting is that with different point incentives teams might be more aggressive and end more games in regulation, or have other things to affect the standings.

Interesting stuff. It looks like the landscape wouldn’t change too drastically, just create more of a distinction between teams in the standings.

Seems as though the 3-point system would have more implications towards play-off seeding than the volume of trades near the deadline

I don’t think using regulation wins as a tiebreaker is out of line with what the NHL already does. It’s no different from saying some points count more than others when you use number of wins as a tie breaker. If teams are tied in points, points from wins count more than points from OTLs. If teams are tied in wins, wins in regulation count more than SO wins.

Last 10 Calder’s have been as follows:
D- 2
G- 3
C- 2
RW-2
LW – 1

Pretty even. But I get the point, it’s hard for a D man who’s not scoring like a winger to get consideration. The fact that Carlson is put out there against the top lines of the other teams and doing very well at it is not going to win him many votes. Particularly in a year with so many dynamic rookie forwards.

Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

by dcsportsfan1 on Feb 25, 2011 8:46 AM EST up reply actions

The far bigger issue that Carlson faces is the fact that he’s not even the top-scoring rookie defenseman – he’s fourth and only two points ahead of Jamie McBain.

If the Caps’ PP had been clicking all year and Carlson had managed to rack up some more points on it, he might be in serious contention, but it just wasn’t to be.

Myers was so far above the competition that it was impossible not to give him the award. As a D-Man he had 48 points vs Matt Duchene who had 55 points. The third guy was Jimmy Howard, who many poeople didn’t even consider a rookie. It was a real down year for the rookie field last season.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Feb 25, 2011 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

Do those bonuses cost cap space if they’re not in the player’s contract, though? It would seem a little ridiculous to penalize a team for a bonus paid by the NHL.

As for Carlson’s contract, he’s only eligible for $87,500 worth of bonuses this year, which won’t be the end of the world when it comes to cap space this year or next.

by Wheeler on Feb 25, 2011 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

My reading of the CBA suggests that the league paid bonuses don’t count, but of course, I’m not a expert, accountant or a lawyer. Would make a great question for GMGM or Fishman next Caps Convention though.

Alex Ovechkin then and now – plenty of “what,” but the “why” is as elusive as ever.

I think we’ve collectively and thoroughly deconstructed the “League has adjusted” theories. At least we have to my satisfaction, anyway.

With the Masisak tweet about him laboring through early practice, the extra weight listed on the roster sheet, the observed inability to create separation from the D, and the cortisone shots, I’m pretty comfortable with the twin diagnosis of 1) not in tip-top shape and 2) nagging injury. Throw in some bad luck on Shooting Pct and you’ve got the makings of a pretty bad year (relatively speaking).

I think this is true as well. It fits nicely with the he’s-saving-it-for-the-playoffs theory. He appears to have changed his game after a brutal year last year. Whether he’s saving it, or consciously trying to be less “reckless,” it has resulted in a different, less effective player.

by Ginga on Feb 25, 2011 10:57 AM EST up reply actions

I thought of it less of a “saving himself” theory and more of a “struggle-to-find-the-right-balance” theory.

I remember Knuble saying after the Campbell injury last season that Ovi didn’t need to make every hit be the hardest, most memorable one ever and that Ovi needed to choose his big hits more carefully and be more judicious on the ice. At the beginning of this season Ovi seemed to me to be a tad cautious with few if any really big hits.

His open ice hit on PK Subban made me therefore very happy—the big hits but not line-crossing hits had perhaps returned..

What extra weight? Alex Ovetjkin keeps posting about this, Ovie weighs the same as he did last year. He spoke to the Russian press recently about it (from Alex Ovetjkin):

Pavel Lysenkov: The hockey expert Sergey Gimaev thinks that Alexander Ovechkin has too much of increased muscle mass and it affects his scoring effectiveness.
Ovie:I don’t agree with Mr. Gimaev. I have the same playing weight as last year. It is around 225-227 pounds (102–103kg) [According to Caps media your official weight at the beginning of the season was 234 pounds! — tj]. Everything is normal, the dynamics of my game have not changed.

He must have really been pushing rookie status at that point , judging from this chronology:

Signed in February of 1984 , played two games for the Capitals going 2-0-0, then sent back to Hershey.

In 1984-85 started with the Binghamton of AHL, got called up in November 1984 by Caps, going 8-2-1.

In 1985-86 season, Mason was back in Binghamton, went 20-11-2. Called up to the Caps for one game.

In 1986-87 season, he beat out Pete Peeters played 45 games and went 20-18-5 with a 3.24 GAA.

So he played parts of 3 seasons, starting 14 games before his “rookie” season.

Why not? I mean, you have to give up talent to get talent, and I’m not sure that Varlamov is any better (or worse) that the other two options the Capitals can go to in goal.

by RCheli on Feb 25, 2011 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

You have potentially 3-4 more years of Varly decently priced, where he hasn’t peaked in terms of potential. Brad Richards could very well have jell-o for brains right now, and won’t be here after this year. It’s not like the Caps can’t win it all without Brad Richards, so they should look elsewhere to acquire talent.

I’m not saying I’m opposed to giving up any of the 3 goalies, but get something back in return that will allow the Caps to solve the 2C problem longer than the last couple months of this season.

by JimCareyFanClub on Feb 25, 2011 10:20 AM EST up reply actions

But if you want something more than a rental, the price is going to go up. A lot.

Right now, for 2+ months of Richards, you’re still going to have to pay a high price.

Not necessarily sold on that. I didnt say Neuvy was significantly better, I just said Varly was not significantly Neuvy. Neuvy has started 10 more games and faced 250 more shots. Plus he shut out the Pens or whats left of them twice.

Neuvys biggest problem is his rebound control. Its gotten better over the past few games. Varly has more upside but as of now I cant see how one is better than the other.

I think for the most part it comes down to whether or not you want to sacrifice the future for a run right now.

I don’t think adding a great 2C is going to be the magic cure for a cup right now. Maybe we don’t get the cup this year, but I’m not sure adding a descent 2C is going to make the different. maybe we NEED to lose again (preferable at the least in the conference finals) for the entire team to gain a learning experience.

Maybe it’s better that the entire team learns the hardway rather than learning that all they need is a “quick fix”.

Or then again, maybe we should just beg Feds to come back this weekend :)

A Trade Deadline Hypothesis

I’ve noticed that there was appreciable movement this week and I’m guessing that the movement will slow down a bit over the weekend, but pick up on Monday.

Why is that you say?

It’s all about the schedule. There were several days this week where only a handful of teams were playing, but the NHL schedule is typically rather full on Friday and Saturday, with a lull on Monday. With playoff races having such razor thin margins, I have to imagine that GMs are loath to part with roster players on nights where they may have to play shorthanded.

With the Caps playing the Rags tonight and the Isles tomorrow I imagine that we may have to wait until Sunday or Monday to discover what GMGM has planned.

I blame Schultz

I think with the amount of injuries this year, there were plenty of teams that know what they needed. They didn’t want to wait until other teams had set up prices for players and the GMs of these teams found what they needed and pulled the trigger.

There have been a few (relative to ‘injury’ trades) that “groom” a team for the play-offs. The Flyers picking up Versteeg, TBL picking up Brewer, Sharks with Ian White, Bruins with Kaberle.

I feel like the rest, while improving prospects towards the playoffs, have been more out of necessity to fill a position vacated by an injured player.

Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!

I’d really love to know where Ovie stacks up with goals and points adjusted for the era.

It took Sergei Fedorov 20 seasons (including 1 strike-shortened season and one holdout-shortened season) to pot 483 goals. How quickly does Ovechkin break that record?

Hockey-Reference-adjusted, seasons 1-5
Ovechkin: 286-265-551
Bossy: 247-218-465
Lemieux: 247-339-586
Gretzky: 279-443-722
Lindros*: 201-260-461

*Lindros had many fewer GP than the others in his first five seasons, only playing 297. Putting him at 75 GP a season (375 GP) gives roughly 254-328-582.

So apparently Chuck Kobasew is on the block. He hasn’t done a whole lot in Minnesota, but he put up a couple of 20-goal seasons in Boston when he was getting more ice time. He’s got good speed, decent hands, and a right-handed shot.

Over the last three years his coaches have loved to get him against good competition with poor teammates and poor zone starts. He’s been killed. This season, same deal but with much easier competition, and he’s still losing, but not by quite so large a margin. He’s on for 32 shots against/60, 22 shots for/60 (latter 3rd lowest among Wild forwards with 40 GP), so I’m not sure he knows what to do in the offensive zone. Plays RW.

I guess he won’t hurt. At the very least he allows Fehr to play in the top-6.

Pretty sure once upon a time he was under contract to Toronto, but I don’t feel like researching it, lol.

This is a formality to re-assign him to the AHL/Hershey. I’d guess if they have any concerns about Holtby’s injury that, as I mentioned yesterday, they will be looking to trade for a depth goalie for Hershey, but one who is on an NHL contract for recall purposes.

Quick reaction – With the trade deadline Monday… If they signed him on Saturday, he would be on waivers all weekend (until Monday at noon) taking up a roster spot, which could be limiting from a trade perspective. They had an open roster spot right now so this way he’s only taking up a spot until tomorrow at noon. Yes, they could send down a waiver exempt player (e.g., Perreault) if needed temp. for a roster spot. Just one thought.

In terms of availability of they waited to sign him, I believe if they signed him after the trade deadline he could play in the regular season but not the playoffs, but I’d have to confirm.

FWIW, they have a decent number of contract spots at the moment with the junior players contracts not counting.

by sk84fun_dc on Feb 25, 2011 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, my question isn’t so much about the roster as the 50 SPC limit. I guess they’re not expecting to add a whole bunch prior to Monday.

ha, yeah no.

Anyway, one would assume they aren’t bringing in a ton of contracts and at a certain point, it’s possible a contract would go the other direction.

Technically, the Capitals have 50 signed contracts, but that counts the 4 players in juniors who are not overage juniors (Eakin, Grubauer, Anderson, and Flemming). So that means they sit at 46 contracts.

46 includes Nylander and the suspended Gustafsson.

by Steckel Me Elmo on Feb 25, 2011 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

I get the feeling Bouchard is the kind of guy who would improve markedly with a trade to another organization. In Hershey, he’s stuck behind older/more experienced guys on the depth chart (e.g. Andrew Gordon, Brian Willsie), and he’s stuck even further behind the guys who are already on the Caps (e.g. Semin, Knuble, Fehr). He’s the type of player who needs a top-six role to be effective, and he can’t see one opening on the right wing in Washington anytime soon.

So why work?

Trade him to a team with fewer offensive prospects in the system, and he’ll probably start to look a lot better.

by Wheeler on Feb 25, 2011 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

If he was any good he wouldn’t be “stuck” behind all those guys. MP came in at the same time and is in the NHL. Granted, MP is playing a position where the NHL club is thinner, but he had produced enough that he was getting quality time in HER when he was down there. Bouch can’t even do that. No.

Holtby is out week to week (assumption based on reports: with a knee injury)

Sabourin is out (possibly for the season)

Caps only went into the season with 4 goalies under contract except for the junior goalies they signed, Grubauer and Anderson.

Even if under emergency conditions the Caps would have considered recalling Grubauer to back-up for a game (it is possible to recall a junior player under emergency conditions), he’s not available as he’s out with mononucleosis.

I was surprised to learn he is still playing, well, dressing for LNAH games after playing 3 seasons in Austria, I thought he had to retire due to injuries.

Is Nashville trading Dman Sulzer? Do Philly and Nashville make another trade?

Sulzer didn’t play last night from what I recall and not practicing now???

Maybe to EDM for Smid.

My thoughts on this one probably should not be printed

I mean GMGM couldn’t have made this move for defensive depth? Kinda ticks me off too.

Hell, up the ante and do it for a 5th!

NSH only gets the 7th if Sulzer re-signs.

Its not a stretch when I say he’s better than Sloan, Erskine, and Poti. Blech.

Clearing the way for Smid to be shipped there I guess.

Good thought, but we need a F and D with Belak/Svatos waived, Sullivan, Goc, O’R, and Lombardi all on IR. We’ve got only 17 healthy skaters.

I highly doubt he’s better than Poti. Unless you mean injured Poti.

by Rob Parker on Feb 25, 2011 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

No, I think I can safely say that Sulzer is better than Poti with very little fear of being wrong.

"[Weber] shoots like MacInnis, hits like Stevens." - Jeff Marek

by Chris Burton on Feb 25, 2011 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

I’m fairly positive all 30 NHL GMs disagree with you if the best GMDP could muster was a conditional 7th.

by Rob Parker on Feb 25, 2011 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

That’s why I’m so confused :P

"[Weber] shoots like MacInnis, hits like Stevens." - Jeff Marek

by Chris Burton on Feb 25, 2011 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

Or maybe your evaluation scale needs to be re-calibrated.

I’m no Poti fan, but he’s at least an established NHL D that can play in the top 4. Sulzer… not so much. And it’s not like he’s a spring chicken with any real upside at this point.

I’ll buy him as better than Sloan without ever watching him play because I doubt Sloan even gets us a conditional 7, but there’s no way he’s better than an established, every day (*when healthy), top 4 capable D.

by Rob Parker on Feb 25, 2011 5:51 PM EST up reply actions

see, I know I'm biased

but I still disagree. Almost all metrics except the box score bore Sulzer out to be the third best defenseman on the team behind Weber and Suter. I can dig up the links if necessary, but I know I wouldn’t take Tom Poti on the Preds over any defenseman but Blum at this very moment.

"[Weber] shoots like MacInnis, hits like Stevens." - Jeff Marek

by Chris Burton on Feb 25, 2011 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

So then GMDP’s well-respected reputation for scouting and evaluating D must be unfounded.

by Rob Parker on Feb 25, 2011 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

Heh. Not that simple but safe to say the move today was incredibly confusing. Blum’s been fantastic (looks like he’s 28 instead of 22), but we’re left with 17 players.

Wayne Gretzky holds dozens of NHL records, but he never was a candidate for the mark currently held by Alan May.

The former enforcer is the only player in NHL history to be involved in four of the 427 trade-deadline deals since 1980. May twice was dealt at the deadline in back-to-back years — in 1988 (Boston to Edmonton) and ’89 (Edmonton to Los Angeles), and again in 1994 (Washington to Dallas) and ’95 (Dallas to Calgary).

Four other players have been dealt three times at the deadline, the most notable being Hall of Famer Mike Gartner, who was swapped at the deadline three times in a five-year span — he went from Washington to Minnesota in 1989, from Minnesota to the New York Rangers a year later, and from the Rangers to Toronto in 1994.

At the risk of hijacking Gouldie’s shindig tonight but in the interests of findability, I’ll be at Bar Louie in my Ovie all-star at the end of the bar by the hostess stand. It gets a little crazy in there with all the identical red Caps sweaters.
