Per the Post-Gazette, Jeffrey or Kunitz might return tonight, and Staal seemed to (luckily) avoid any damage from the shot he took up high yesterday.

And for everyone expecting Johnson in goal, Rossi from the Trib thinks Fleury’s getting back-to-back starts.
Fleury, who made 29 saves, acknowledged his likely start tonight against the Capitals will be one of the biggest this season

Shelly Anderson is really off his game today:
Speaking of the Pens race with the Flyers for the Atlantic Division lead:
the Penguins are six points back, although they have a game in hand.I guess game in hand now means that you have played one more game than the other team.
On their race with the Caps for the fourth seed in the East:
That means fourth place might be as good as it gets for the Penguins in the Eastern Conference. One spot and just two points behind them are the CapitalsDid you guys know you are only two points back? I guess the Caps can afford to take it a little bit easy tonight.

I would not be surprised to see the Pens hang on to fourth place. Their D and forecheck are both very good, and that’s going to be enough to win them their share of games.

This means I might have to spring for the Center Ice deal. I’m sure the promotion is over by then.
There's always more to learn about Hockey.
Better than Center Ice: the Roku plus Gamecenter Live. This way, you actually get the games in 720p HD (if you buy the $60 Roku).
Roku is a device so you can stream internet feeds to your TV. Gamecenter Live is an awesome program, except for when games are blacked out…

SJS/NSH

As much as I have maligned the Pens’ medical staff, this one’s not on them. That was in the post-game scrum, and it’s not like Bylsma gets the final say on that.
Oh, maybe he does. Never mind.

It is to the Pens advantage to keep who can and can’t play as ambiguous as possible before the game. Make the opponent ponder who might be in or out. Does Wilkes-Barre have any more centers?

Yet not enough to get the green arrow here at the Rink. Harsh. For all the h8, he seems to have a habit of showing up in the right places at just the right times… if not consistently. It’s allright, though – if MP85 was going to have a good day, it should have been yesterday. At least the scouts got a good look.
Double standards for folks like Matty, Beagle and A. Gordon are a fact of life in this league. I’m glad Sasha Minor is healthy, and bully on him for the hat trick and the win in Anaheim, but watching that guy on the ice it seems to me unless he’s sniping, he’s not really interested in doing much else. He’s lazy, and if he had a third of MP85’s get up and go gas, our year might look a wee bit different. Then again, there’s a lot of folks on the top two lines this could be said of…
Which reminds me… a goal, an assist and a offensive zone penalty (I think… help me out here folks..) for MP yesterday right? Isn’t that what we like to call a ‘Alex Semin Hat Trick’? ; ) Nevermind that shot goes in regardless of MarJo touching it, but eh.

After tonight’s game, the schedule turns decidedly soft for the next nine games. The eight teams they play have a combined record of 216-200-56, only three are currently in a playoff position and four of them are in last place in their division. By comparison, Tampa Bay’s opponents in the same nine game stretch have a combined record of 232-189-47, five of them are currently in the playoffs and only one is in last place. Plus they play two games against the Devils, the hottest team in hockey. If the Caps are going to make a push for the division, this is the time to do it.
Two of the Caps’ games are against the Islanders, who have been playing some pretty inspired hockey themselves.
"It's always good to have vikings."
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
True, but the Islanders are very young team that’s playing way above their heads right now. You’ve got to love their effort, but they have no shot at the playoffs and sooner or later, they’ll come back to earth. The Devils, on the other hand, are a veteran team that’s finally playing to their ability. And, in their mind, they still have a shot at the playoffs. I’ll take the Isles and give Tampa Bay the Devils any day.
Unfortunately this is anything but encouraging. This team has a nasty habit of not showing up for the “soft” games.

So instead of giving Joe B. the opportunity to call an NBC regional game, we get the Flyer’s play by play guy instead. Or in other words, Comcast-owned network uses play-by-play guy for Comcast-owned team.
Can’t wait for the new NHL TV contract, when Comcast/NBC/Versus shows us non-stop games of “America’s Team – Your Philadelphia Flyers.”

I’ve nothing against this year’s Flyers team and their record. My beef has always been with the NHL giving the US television rights contract to a corporation that has primary ownership in one of the 30 teams. In any other business that would reek of conflict of interest.
"I remembered when he said that and I kind of looked at him during the warm up and told myself that I got to shut these guys out tonight." - Michal Neuvirth, 02.06.11.
Meh. Media corporations have (and continue to) own large percentages of sports teams. CBS owned the Yankees for a couple of decades. WGN (which is a national network of sorts) owned the Cubs for many, many years. Cablevision owns the Rangers and Knicks.
And I hate to defend the NHL, but they didn’t give it to Versus. They sold it to Versus — who were the only cable network who was willing to pay money for it.

That’s not really the point is it? Cooke tried to end his career, or at the very least put him out for the season. Steckel never saw what hit him.
Frankly, I’m not really expecting much tonight. Except a win.

Steckel answers the bell on an accident, lets see what Cooke can do…something tells me he runs and hides.
Steckel didn’t go with Rupp or any Penguin who actually could fight.
(For the record, I don’t have a problem with what Steckel did, but let’s not act like he stood up to any challenge.)
Cooke has taken his medicine from tougher opponents than anyone the Caps will dress tonight (when he obliged Thornton the game after the Savard hit). But I believe he feels his hit on Ovechkin wasn’t intentional, I don’t think he’s going to feel he necessarily owes the Caps a fight….Plus, we all know Matt Cooke, if not fighting might give him an advantage by getting into the Caps’ heads, he’ll probably take it.

Yeah, sure, I didn’t ask him myself or anything, but I’ve watched Cooke closely for a while and (unfortunately) have seen a lot of questionable hits and the aftermath go down.
It seems like when he knows he crossed the line he’ll fight, like the Savard hit or the Anisimov hit last year. But other times when his comments absolve himself of wrong-doing (like in this case) he doesn’t answer the bell.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Cooke obliged Bradley or Hendricks, but at the same time it’s more of my expectation for him to brush it off in this scenario.

Generally speaking, I think it’s of questionable value to go after him at all. Now whether anyone gets it in their head to be like the Islanders and go after someone else (who’s left worth going after?), I hope that doesn’t happen.

inglorious douche bag
At least he plays on a team full of em…
Stecks answered the bell given an appropriate opponent. I don’t have a problem with Rupp asking Stecks to dance, so long as he takes “no” for an answer, which he did.
I don’t expect King to go after Cooke, which would be a mismatch. However, Cooke was challenged by Brads (an appropriate match up) when he came out of the box after the Ovi hit and he declined.
At a minimum, Cooke’s hit on Ovi was no more intentional than Stecks on Crosby, and he was held to account for it despite no record of reckless behaviour (look at how many PIMs he has!). I expect Hendy or Brads to come a callin’ early and I expect that Cooke will oblige. If he doesn’t, he’s a bigger weasel than some may have suspected.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

If that’s the case, then Cooke better hope the game is a close one… if it gets to be like 5-1 one way or the other, someone (Hendricks?) may go at him…

In15 games from 08/09 – 09/10 Alex Ovechkin scored 30 points vs Pens (19g, 11a). This year 0 points in 3 games. Thank you, Zbynek Michalek.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
So how do they explain giving up 5 of 6 points to the Caps with Ovie staying off the score sheet? Thank You, Brooks Orpik
Alex did have a goal in the Winter Classic but it was waved off. I won’t disagree that Michalek has been pretty effective against AO so far this year, but Ovi’s been playing a lot better the last two weeks.
Plus we still have the Knuble Kannon.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Who hasn’t been effective against AO this year? Even that no-name in FLA looks great against him.
The guy most responsible for shutting down AO this year is AO. It’s hilarious to me when fans all of a sudden think their D is some shutdown stud because AO isn’t lighting it up against them. He isn’t lighting it up against anyone.
Disagree. AO’s bullshit standard move just happened to work a couple times against western conference defenders who don’t see him often enough to be prepared for it.
I blame Schultz
I wouldn’t get too cocky, Hooks. There are a lot of mediocre defenseman who can make that claim this season. More to the point, lets see how he fares tonight against the “old” Ovechkin.
I’m not being cocky, just pointing out before this season, Ovechkin had points in 14 of the last 15 games versus Pittsburgh.
-9 multi-efforts
-19 goals in 15 games.
If anything, that just shows how mind-bogglingly good he’s been. So to see him held off the score sheet is impressive, he’s killed the Pens.

I was half-joking, but the point I was making is that holding Ovechkin pointless is hardly a big achievement this season. Out of the Caps 60 games, Ovi has been pointless in 20 of them. Atlanta has held him without a point in three games and there isn’t a defenseman on that team that you’d categorize as a defensive stud. Buffalo, Tampa Bay and Ottawa have held him pointless in two games and the same applies to their defensive corp. In the past, keeping Ovechkin off the board was noteworthy. Not this year. So to point to Michalek as performing a Hal Gillish-type of feat on Ovechkin is a bit of an exaggeration in my book.
Ovechkin had a 14 game point streak against the Pens coming into this season. He has zero in 3 this year.
That’s mainly what I was pointing out.

However, the reference to Michalek makes it sound like there’s some special connection to production being down while playing against the Pens.

Exactly. AO had lots of incredible point stats coming into this year (like over a point per game by a lot). He’s not living up to any of them. It’s not because every team all of a sudden got a shutdown D that can handle AO.
Maybe it’s because teams learned how to better defend him? With increased backside pressure from back-checkers and a willingness to take away his gap (something opponents were scared to do earlier), the book on how to defend Ovechkin is out.
It doesn’t work every time, because he’s really good, but I think a lot of Ovechkin’s decrease is in how they’re playing him, and his subsequent lack of adjustment. Montreal sort of put the book out on how to limit him as best as possible, and a lot of teams have taken a page out of that book this year, from my eyes.
And, to me, it is meaningful to note that since the Pens added Martin/Michalek, Ovechkin hasn’t scored. Because he always did. Whether or not you think it correlates is up to you.

I don’t think they learned how to better defend him (if so, it took five years, and the rest of the league is made up of idiots…I don’t think that’s the case). Just that he’s not as explosive as in the past. Same defense as always, just more effective now than before.

martin didn’t suit up, so surely that’s the reason michalek played fewer minutes against ovechkin at 5 v 5 than he did against any washington capital not named DJ king (the site lets you order opponents by player if you click on the name at the top of the column). michalek was matched up against laich-semin, and played more ES minutes against the matt bradley line than he did against the ovechkin line.

The Habs “limited” him to 5 goals and 5 assists in 7 games. They did a much better job of actually limiting Crosby in the 2nd round. If they don’t wave off Ovie’s 6th goal of that series I think last year’s playoffs go very, very differently too.

Ales Hemsky
Wyshynski tweeted this rumor last night that has one glaring error in it:
Saw @TSNRyanRishaug mention this, heard same thing last night: Hemsky very much on Capitals’ radar. Solves 2nd line C, UFA 2012. High cost
The error, of course (which Wysh corrected) was that Hemsky is a center; the guy hasn’t taken 100 draws in his NHL career. But that doesn’t change the fact that a couple of credible sources have said that Hemsky’s on the Caps’ radar.
The good question is “why?” Hemsky is a scoring winger with a great set of hands and a decent shot, though he prefers to set up his teammates rather than score himself; he also is fairly brittle and often accused of not giving maximum effort every night. Red Line Station has a nice in-depth description of Hemsky and asked the question (back in November!) if he’d be a potential trade target for the Caps.
Hemsky sounds, to me, like a playmaking Alex Semin with even less PK time. And while Hemsky doesn’t solve the second-line center issue, he could potentially free up an asset (Semin) who could then be shipped to a team that has a second-line center. Do I smell a crazy HFBoards three-way trade between Edmonton, LA, and the Caps? I think I do!
If th Caps had not re-signed Semin for a year, I might have thought this possible. But the Caps have too many of the same player already — all too content to play in the perimeter — and Hemsky has not only a $4.1M cap hit next season, but it’s a $5.0M dollar outlay. Not buying on this rumor.
If you've read this far...seek help.
by ThePeerless on Feb 21, 2011 10:38 AM EST up reply actions
I don’t think it makes a whole lot of sense unless the Caps are actively trying to send Semin elsewhere for help down the middle.
Hemsky’s signed for next year at a 4.1 mil cap hit (GMGM and Ted haven’t shown that they care too much about the cash outlay, so long as it makes the team better) and having that extra 2.6 million of cap space next year would be advantageous for the Caps as well.
Judging by how the Sabres looked yesterday, I think Tim Connolly has a very realistic shot at being a Cap by this time next week. I can’t imagine the price would be too, too high.

Only if there’s something available to spend it on that’s worthwhile. As we’ve seen this year, cap space is great, but only if there’s a piece out there you’re willing/able to acquire. Right now there’s a dearth of available centers that would be an upgrade over what the Caps presently have.
Moreover, Hemsky’s made of glass.
I blame Schultz
All right, here goes:
To LA: Semin, Eakin
To Edmonton: Colten Teubert, Vyacheslav Voynov, LA’s 1st;
To Washington: Hemsky, Handzus
From LA: Handzus, Teubert, Voynov, 1st;
From WSH: Semin, Eakin
From EDM: Hemsky
Edmonton gets two stud D prospects and a first; LA gets an excellent goal-scoring wing who can play either side of Anze Kopitar and a prospective 3C/W; the Caps get a playmaking wing and a good rental center for this season. L.A. then has the depth at center to either put Loktionov or Oscar Moller at the 3C spot.
I feel like the Caps should be giving up a bit more than this, but if you think of it on the level of “Semin for Hemsky and Handzus for Eakin” in separate deals, it almost seems like it’s an overpayment.
My first reaction: LA is giving up a ton there.

But, I would argue Semin is the best player involved in this trade. And the cupboard isn’t left empty for them. They still would have some solid D prospects left over, along with Brayden Schenn.

But who is the finisher? That line is better with Semin than with Hemsky, so we could just do Eakin plus a mid round pick and get Handzus and not worry about Hemsky. Laich-Zeus-Jizz would be a great line.
I guess the big reason to throw in Semin would be to get some extra cap space next year with which the Caps could re-sign Hannan or Handzus..
I can see the value there, it’s just going to be subjective as to whether you think that’s enough to offset losing Semin for Hemsky. I don’t personally think it’s worth it. I’m even less convinced Hemsky can stay healthy for a playoff run than I am about Semin.
Total games/season since being drafted (Hemsky being drafted in ’01, Semin in ’02):
Hemsky: 59/82, 47/50, 71/82, 81/82, 64/82, 72/82, 74/82, 22/82
Semin: 56/82 (52 in DC, 4 in Portland), 50/50, 32/50, 77/82, 63/82, 62/82, 73/82
With the exception of Hemsky’s 22-game season (which was due to a knee injury that required surgery), the two are fairly comparable in the “brittle” department, no?
I don’t really care, honestly. I would expect all three to score 20 goals, or at least come close. Part of the reason there doesn’t appear to be a finisher is since Handzus and especially Hemsky don’t shoot the puck at all.
I do see a lot of value in making AO and Mojo’s jobs easier, though.

If that’s what Edmonton gets for Hemsky, Tambellini deserves a “GM of the year” award.
Hemsky’s a nifty player, but we’re talking about a guy who’s never played more than 74 games in a season and who has never scored 25 goals and isn’t exactly what you’d call defensively conscious.
I blame Schultz
Would that be a fair trade for Semin, though? I think it might. The Kings are only going to lose three defensemen to free agency in the next two years (Mitchell, Scuderi, and 7th D Peter Harrold) and yet have five or six D prospects who are playing in Manchester (Muzzin, Voynov, Hickey, Teubert, and Mullen) or in college (Forbort). Jack Johnson and Drew Doughty will get locked up long-term, and all of the sudden the Kings have to ask themselves what they’re doing with this wealth of D-men.
I like it from the Caps and Oils’ perspectives. I guess if LAK are desperate they could pull the trigger, but given how the playoffs work, if I were a GM, I’d never be that desperate.

1) I thought it played pretty well today. Hey, it used to be that they couldn’t get shots in at all. Today, they put a good number on net, several of which would have beaten a lesser goalie, one of which beat miller.

Also, Ovie’s been really trending up recently.

Watch the Penguins closely at the deadline. If you are looking for indicators that Crosby is returning, an active Penguin team at the deadline suggests to me he will answer the bell for the playoffs. If Crosby’s recouperation is slow, the Pens might be silent at the deadline. Trades made by a club without their top two centers might be chasing smoke. They can’t add enough talent to make up the difference, and I don’t care how hard they work, the team they are icing can’t win four games four times in the spring against healthier, more talented teams.

You’re probably right, Peerless (and b orr below), but the Pens are likely fatally flawed without Malkin anyways.
If the chance to get Neal for Goligoski is on the table, I think you take it as fast as possible. Not necessarily to win this year, but for the over-arching point of adding a legit young, NHL skilled winger.
But overall, I do agree with what you said. I’m coming to expect the Pens to be relatively quiet at the deadline.

In the very short term this helps the Caps because the Pens aren’t going to be even more depleted tonight. I doubt that Neal and Niskanen can get to Pitt by game time, and they don’t have Goligoski.

NBC Cameras
Don’t know if this was discussed during the GDT yesterday but. . . did NBC let the interns run the cameras for the first period of yesterday’s game? They kept zooming in on the puck when it was in the offensive zone, so that every time there was a pass, the camera had to pan quickly to keep up, but it couldn’t so the camera was just constantly one step behind the play. Also, it seemed like the purpose of all the zooming was to fill up 1/2 of the screen with the stands whenever the puck was down low.
NBC/Versus: hockey is a fast sport – don’t try to follow the puck with the camera. Just pan back a little and show the whole offensive/defensive zone and let the viewer follow the puck. Thanks.
I blame Schultz
Someday I want to see an entire game from goal-cam. Switch cams every time the puck crosses the red line.

Possible Center Source
After acquiring Jay McClement, the Avs have 5/6 centers on the roster (Duchene, Stastny, O’Reilly, McClement, Dupuis and Galiardi [who has been a center in the past]). In addition, their top prospect, Joey Hishon, is a center and presently lighting up the OHL.
Of all these guys the only two “untouchables” are likely Duchene and Hishon. Stastny has been underperforming his salary this year and it’s possible that the Avs would look to move him. Dater speculates that it’s more likely that the team moves O’Reilly instead.
As much as I love O’Reilly (oh, really?), he’s not a great fit for the Caps right now. He’d essentially be another 2/3 “tweener” to go along with MP and MoJo. Unlike those two, he’s a stud defensively, but he’s got much less offensive ability/upside.
I blame Schultz
So if you don’t think ROR is a good fit and Stastny might be available, the course of action is pretty clear, no?

Yeah, the question is, what would the Avs want in return?
I’d have to imagine they’d inquire about a goalie, since their only goalie prospect is Pickard, and he’s a few years away. I’d also imagine that they’d ask for winger and maybe a pick in return.
Dunno. Stranger things have happened.
I blame Schultz
I bet Holtby and Semin would get it done if thats the direction the Avs are thinking.

Guess that depends on how closely you think Tyler hits the mark when he talks about Backstrom. I think he sells Nick far short. I also can’t get the Olympics out of my head when we talk about Stastny. Add in that COL already has him and they don’t think he’s worth the contract and I’m skeptical. It’s not like he’s too old to be part of the rebuild. They don’t have other guys that are commanding a ton of money that would force him off the team (which is the case with the Caps). He’s a nice player, but I don’t think it makes sense for us to pursue him.
The Olympics aren’t really fair to judge a player on, unfortunately. Take Erik Johnson – infinitely better for Team USA than he has been for the Blues. Stastny’s been better for the Avs than he was for the Americans, it happens.

Maybe. I don’t like the idea of moving Holtby and I doubt COL thinks too highly of him. I’d certainly think about it but there are other guys I’d rather move first.

In Semin, you’re giving up a legit top line winger who is about to turn 27 and is in the prime of his career. He may be streaky, but the guy has averaged a goal a game over the last five years. Only a handful of players can make that claim. Holtby has the potential to become a #1 keeper for a decade. And you’re throwing in a pick. Stastny’s a good player, but in five years he’s never scored more than 29 goals in a season or more than 79 points. Semin has scored over 29 three times and will probably do it again this year and has two seasons of 79 points or more. I’d trade Semin for Stastny, but no way I’d throw in Holtby and definitely not a pick, particularly since the Caps have some very promising centers in the pipeline.
but the guy has averaged a goal a game over the last five years.
Um, no. Not even close. He hasn’t even averaged a point per game.
I blame Schultz
I meant point a game, my error. In 320 game games he has 318 points. That’s close enough in my book.
You realize that Stastny hasn’t been far behind that production rate, despite playing on a much, much worse team?
I blame Schultz
I’m not downplaying Stastny’s ability. He’s an excellent player and if it were a straight up trade of Semin for him, I’d probably do it. I just wouldn’t trade Semin, Holtby and a high pick for Stastny, which was what started this discussion.
If Semin and Stastny were equals, then we could look at it as 2 yrs of Stastny for Hotlby and a pick. That sounds reasonable to me. More gets shipped for 2 months of a winger.
I think you’re overrating Holtby’s value. I think given how unpredictable goalies are in development, goalie prospects are most valuable to the organization in which they’re in.

Are you kidding? A #1C for Semin and a goalie that’s third on the depth chart?
Look around the EC at the top teams. Every one of them has depth down the middle save for the Caps. Philly’s got Richards/Carter/Giroux/Briere, Pittsburgh’s got Crosby/Malkin/Staal, Boston’s got Krejci/Bergeron/Seguin, Tampa’s got Stamkos/Lecavalier. . . The Caps go Backstrom down to Johansson. I know that no one’s favorite commenter suggested the other day that Stastny will be moved to make way for Joey Hishon. I don’t buy that, but I do know that the Avalanche have depth among centers but are thin on the wing. Stastny also has a $6.6 million annual salary, not an insignificant number for this cheapskate franchise. Bottom line, though, is that Stastny is the team’s best tradeable asset. If he’s moved, the return will be significant (or we might have to shut down this blog due to the outrage). Odds are, Stastny is staying and the Avs will continue to have that solid 1-2-3 punch up the middle. But, I no longer consider Stastny to be completely off the table.

DetAvs has real MarioD potential. he’s the closest thing i’ve seen. this was my favorite comment among many to choose from in the wake of the johnson/stewart trade:
1. Hishon hurt his hand training BEFORE camp.
2. You saw him in a couple drills in rookie camp and think you have the credibility to talk down to someone who watches him play – live – ALL THE TIME?
3. Well, when you have your education paid for, when you have the NHL fly you to the Draft a couple times, when you’re able to make a living evaluating talent, then you can get back to me about my ability to assess talent.
4. Which took gall in the first place, coming from the girl who thinks Saad is a hard hitting power forward.
You should really learn not to run your mouth about players you’ve never seen to people who have.

It definitely should’ve been a penalty. The only reason I’m giving Sharp the benefit of the doubt is that he was being checked at the same time so he was fighting through that defender to get to Martin.

Kaberle/Versteeg trades
This came up on another board about how the Capitals should have made a run at these guys. I couldn’t really fathom it — Kaberle, to me, is quite overpaid and underperforming. At premium pricing, a defenseman has to be more than just points. Kaberle looks more lost in his own zone than even Green does in the playoffs.
And Versteeg, didn’t we just get rid of Fleischmann? No real difference between the two other than proven 20g productivity. Same lax defensive effort and everything.
Am I mad, that I should cherish that which bears but bitter fruit?
I will pluck it from my bosom, tho' my heart be at the root.
Completely agree about Kaberle. I’d be furious if we gave up two first round assets for him.
Versteeg is better than Flash, but he’s paid more, too. I wouldn’t want that contract.
oh definitely better than Flash, just close enough to show that Versteeg would be a bad fit for the team.

well that was interesting reply on my part, but, yeah, Versteeg is better than Flash hands down. Just saying he’s a similar enough player to show that he’d be a bad fit for the team.

Also, a Sabres fan friend of mine just mentioned there were 23 scouts from 20 teams at the Sabres/Caps game. I don’t know who from the Sabres are movable, but, it sounds like MP85 is going to be some major tradebait to me.

On the Sabres, Tim Connolly is movable and teams would be interested in him as a 2C. Alot of the scouts there were checking out which of the team doctors for BUF could be packaged with him in a deal.

Just a thought: might Anaheim be a willing taker for one of our D on a not-great contract, either at the deadline or maybe at the draft/FA? They’re kinda thin (though Beauchemin now makes their situation at least manageable).

That was a straight up fleecing by Shero. Goligoski gets soft minutes and a bunch of PP time that make his boxcars look good. That tells me that Nieuwendyk is also going to overvalue Richards’s numbers against easier minutes.
Niskanen, while being a soft-minutes guy, is also an upgrade over Lovejoy or Engellend. I’m going to kick Joe Nieuwendyk’s sac through the top of his head if I ever meet him.

Sure he does – he prevents an Engellend/Lovejoy 3rd pairing, which has to get hidden like Philly hid Bartulis/Syvret in the playoffs.

Not sure agree with you. Huet and Fedorov worked out great and despite the failures last year I don’t fault the Belanger trade at all. I don’t think any of those three are “diamonds in the rough”.
Huet was not favored/established as starter (iirc) and Feds was thought to be very far into his decline. We sent hardly anything back for either of them and got really good results. I’d consider them diamonds in the rough. Since then, deadline deals have been…underwhelming to say the least.

Seems GMGM is too enamored with the long-term vision/window to be bothered with shaking things up in the short term. Problem is we’ll have to wait years to find out if this is/was the prudent approach.
After last season and the way this team is built, to have to push your chips in the pot and go for the Cup. GMGM is not showing that while everyone else around him, is.
Check out a new social network, Hockey Connect, a place for coaches, players, family and fans to share strategies and experiences.
The trade deadline is a week away. McPhee’s made moves every year. I doubt he’s going to get left at the altar. That trade looks good for Pittsburgh but neither of those guys are what’s needed here unless they can play center or man the point on the PP.
I have hopes something gets done….In no way am I saying Neal or Niskanen are a miss by GMGM, I am getting worried by the solid moves the Pens, Flyers, Bruins made while we have done nothing.
Check out a new social network, Hockey Connect, a place for coaches, players, family and fans to share strategies and experiences.
Flyers and Bruins, I’d agree. I wouldn’t worry about the Pens. They’re not going anywhere this year. Keep in mind, they hardly got Neal for his playoff experience. I’ve played as many minutes as he has in the playoffs.
This isn’t a short-term deal, it’s a long-term deal. All 3 players traded are under contract for next season and are relatively young players. Pretty sure all are RFA after their respective contracts expire in summer ’12.
yep, all are RFA’s following 2011-2012. grrrrr.

Maybe it’s just a matter of making offers or asking for a player. Some GMs just seem to be really reluctant to pull the trigger (not saying McPhee is or anything), and Shero is already known as a guy who will make a deal.
Exactly GMGM and Shero are two different cats when it comes to making trades. As a guy who loves watching trades unfold and the roster action, I like watching Shero maneuver. As a Caps fan, I can understand GMGM’s more conservative nature…..at times lol.

I think that describes McPhee pretty well. Perhaps he has the best plans in mind, but sometimes I just want new toys, damnit. Not saying Neal was someone I wanted, but I want players other than walker and corvo.

There’ve been some strange trades this year but this one takes the cake. It’s not like JN gave up on a hit or miss draft pick, James Neal is, pardon the overused phrase, the real deal. I know I would’ve given up a whole lot more than Goligoski to get him.

by Rather Bengt on Feb 21, 2011 4:28 PM EST up reply actions
Sure, but the return you get has to be better than Alex Goligoski. It has to be. It’s not a question of whether or not Neal was going to get better from here, it’s a question of potential return. The Stars left a lot of asset on the table in terms what they could have gotten for James Neal. If they really wanted to save money, picks don’t cost a thing and they’re likely to help you in the future by getting more production than cost.

According to Rossi, Tangradi was also available for the Pens. I don’t know if the Stars made a bid for him. I think they are basically clearing salary to resign Richards when a deal seems as lopsided as this one comes off.

Reading the comments at Defending Big D, alot of the commenters don’t seem to be as upset about it as we are. They see Neal as very streaky and leaves them with questions whether he will ever reach his full potential. They are excited about a new first line of Benn-Richards-Eriksson. Alot seem to agree that Niskanen is the biggest “facepalm inducer” on the team . They like Gogo because they need a PP QB eeven if he will likely be 3rd on their depth chart (behind Robidas and Daley I am guessing).

Stars fans seem to be going through what a lot of fans do when their team trades a player who is often hated on – they love the deal because they don’t have to put up with his quirks/laziness/inconsistency anymore.
Also they think Goligoski is a 3rd defenseman. Haha.

CB, they experimented with benn at center but he’s more natural at wing (which is where he played for the AHL club). i wouldn’t be surprised to see him take neal’s spot.
The Stars for a while even moved Benn from left wing to center, a position he had never played. He is back on left wing with the Texas Stars, but Nieuwendyk said Benn still takes a lot of faceoffs and understands the center position.

So agree with most as I like Neal the most…interesting from a dollars perspective for Dallas with the team for sale, etc., but still surprising.
What surprises me is this is another deal involving 3 players all under contract through next season; no rentals involved.
I know little about Goligoski, so maybe this means nothing, but I do find it curious that he plays almost 21 minutes a game and is +20, best among all Pittsburgh defensemen. I know he’s probably playing easy minutes but maybe Dallas believes he’ll really blossom there playing top four minutes. And maybe they know something about Neal that Pittsburgh hasn’t seen. I do think this is a trade made not so much for the playoffs as it is for the big picture.
He’s a PP specialist who draws soft minutes at evens. He’s got an outlandish PDO (1034) driving his +/-. I hate this trade so very much.

quick question for the advanced-stat dunces in the room (such as myself): what is PDO?
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
On-ice shooting percentage (of all players on his team while the guy in question is on the ice) plus shooting percentage against on the ice. So If you add up the Pens shooting percentage with GoGo is on the ice plus their save percentage while he’s on the ice, you get 103.4% – PDO regresses, hard, to 1000. There are some forwards that can drive S% higher and some D that can drive Sv% higher, but the noise effects are generally a lot bigger than the player effects.
Jeff Schultz was a +50 last season because he had an outrageous PDO (the highest on record, 1069). He’s not anywhere near that this season and his numbers have suffered as a consequence.

thanks, makes sense now. So typically guys who get lots of PP time on elite PP teams are going to have a higher PDO?
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
No, this is strictly even strength data. Guys who are on teams with high shooting percentages and good save percentages are going to have high PDOs. Boston’s is stratospheric this season, because Fuzzy The Floppy Goaltender is stopping everything in sight. That’s going to end at some point.

This is a big picture trade for both teams; I like Neal the best of the players involved. Niskanen had a solid rookie and I believe soph. season, but not so much since then. I’m not as negative on Goligoski as some, but it will be interesting to see how he does in Dallas.
Pittsburgh gets a top 6 winger that they really need and I’d think that would be worth more than Niskanen plus Neal…For Dallas moving real dollars was definitely part of this trade.

AM ET 02.21 | The Panthers are open for business. Florida GM Dale Tallon is trying to unload before the deadline. Pretty much anybody on the Panthers roster is available — including C Stephen Weiss, if somebody will give up a first-round pick. The list I’ve been given of available players in Florida: LW Cory Stillman, C Steve Reinprecht, D Bryan McCabe, RW Steve Bernier, D Dennis Wideman, RW Radek Dvorak, C Shawn Matthias and Tomas Vokoun. OK, that pretty much covers the team. The Penguins could acquire Stillman, while McCabe and Wideman are good possibilities to get moved. Ottawa Sun

I believe the comparable someone came up with is Max Talbot. Don’t let Dale Tallon here that, though.
If he could bring Weiss in return, I’d do that deal in a second but I’m sure Tallon is going to want at least a second rounder as well and maybe a roster player.
Another comparable is Darren Helm. Same size, great wheels, similar junior numbers in a similar league.

My initial reaction is that this trade proves three things: James Neal is not as valued as many felt he was by the Stars, Matt Niskanen is more expendable than a draft pick and the Stars are more than prepared to re-sign Brad Richards.

Neal/Goligoski trade
I’m surprised the Stars wouldn’t try to get a bigger return for James Neal if they were planning to trade him. I can understand valuing someone like Jaime Benn more but if they were going to trade Neal and needed an offensive defenseman, couldn’t they have traded for someone better than Goligoski? Throwing in Niskanen doesn’t matter much to me since he’s just awful, imo.
Definitely makes the Pens more scary down the stretch since Crosby has a winger now when he gets healthy. Reminds me of the Whitney/Kunitz deal a little bit.

On paper it looks good for Pittsburgh, but after reading a pretty well thought out analysis over at Defending Big D (h/t Rather Bengt), it may not be as cut and dry a win as it first appears. The fact that he has one goal in his last 11 games (most of which he played with Richards and Ericsson) makes me wonder a little.
I forgot that Neal plays left wing and not right. Hmm, so I guess Kunitz gets bumped to the second line now. Neal’s ceiling’s definitely a lot higher.
