I’m sure most of you have seen by now, but in the middle of the night St. Louis and Colorado one-upped everyone:

To COL:
Erik Johnson, Jay McClement, conditional 2nd
To STL:
Chris Stewart, Kevin Shattenkirk, protected 1st

Thoughts, everyone?

Really surprising (to me) deal. Neither team is going anywhere this year, so a trade involving a fairly recent #1 pick seems to be a pretty odd deal. I think I like it for STL, but it all depends on just how good Erik Johnson becomes, obviously. Really hard to judge this deal in the short-term, I think.

I was shocked also. My basic thoughts are much like yours – if Erik Johnson improves to what he’s capable of, then Colorado gets the best player, and thus win the trade. If not, St. Louis will probably win by a mile because Shattenkirk is no slouch and Stewart is a legitimate power forward. As if the Blues weren’t already annoying enough to play against.

3 first round picks (including a #1) and a second round pick, plus 2 actual picks, yes, now that’;s a trade. Saw it middle of night and had to read it three times. Heard rumors about Johnson but thought it would be an off-season move.

So just yesterday 9 teams involved in trades either subtracting or adding a roster player, crazy. As I said then did someone misread the TDL as Feb 18th instead of Feb 28th.

by sk84fun_dc on Feb 19, 2011 9:33 AM EST up reply actions

I like both the Colorado players heading to St. Louis. Still, I know they have some depth on D with Cole going between NHL and AHL and they got Shattenkirk back, but it is interesting to see the Blues trade the top 2 dmen in terms of time on ice.

Eric Brewer 54GP 22:14
Erik Johnson 55GP 22:07

Pietrangelo was next at 21:02 in 53GP.

Shattenkirk was averaging 19:50, third on the Avs.

Yeah, all three of those were supposed untouchables. Lots of chatter around the Avs’ fanbase that Stastny is available. Whether that’s true or not is another story, but wow.

6.6 until 2014

Never going to happen in Washington.
Might happen in Pittsburgh though as Malkin is going on LTIR and GM has already said he’s willing to take on Salary and trade it in the offseason.

Um, no. Pittsburgh could get him for this season and this season only. If the Caps sent Semin the other way, they could hold onto Stastny. That’s a trade I’d take every day and five times on Sunday.

Uh, Semin for Statsny? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes.

by Charlie Foxtrot on Feb 19, 2011 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

I have a hard time believing the Avs are willing to part with Stastny especially given that he’s the franchise player and given his family’s history with that franchise. Granted in another city but still….

He’s having a good year on the goal scoring front even though he’s more of a playmaker than a goal scorer. Over the years, he has 2 assists for every goal.

Do I want him traded for Semin? That’s a tough one. But I think their talents could complement one another.

Think St. Louis wins by a margin.

Shattenkirk’s looked good offensively, and Stewart gives them another gritty winger that can score. Plus, the consensus is that this year’s draft class is weaker than years before, so 1st round picks are off the shelves more than Rogaine is for Shattenkirk’s growing bald spot.

Still think that Johnson will help the Avs out, and I guess it never hurts to have another 1st rounder, but the upside is greater for St. Louis.

I like this deal for STL, too, but Shattenkirk along with many other Colorado players has had some struggles of late. Don’t misunderstand, I like Shattenkirk and his upside, just noting.

Pietrangelo for St. Louis has looked good this year, too, and that’s what may have made Johnson expendable.

Weighing in late a bit here – but I think SIO, you’ve hit part of the issue.

Talking with some of the other dads at a HS hockey playoff game last night, we agreed that the only untouchables on the Blues are Halak, Pietrangelo, Backes and Oshie. Someone tried to argue Steen, and I disagreed. There was no doubt at all that Johnson could be had. This was all before the trade.

My question is whether this makes the Blues buyers or sellers. I think they are clearly buyers – for now. If, say, over, the next few days, they don’t win a bunch, I think they then become sellers on Monday. I think Bergland could be had, even.

I awake to a blockbuster, seems like first real one of the season. At first glance, seems like St. Louis makes out very well. Chris Stewart was one of the top scorers in the league before his injury this season and Shattenkirk was a having a Calder caliber year, albeit with an amazing start and sharp drop-off since, but still. Plus a 1st round pick? Johnson’s developing but he’s not as good as expected and I realistically don’t see him reaching his ceiling. St Louis with the win for me on this one.

I may be wrong on this, but all of the sources I’ve read in the 10 minutes I’ve been up have the 1st rounder going to Colorado and the 2nd to St. Louis.

St. Louis Blues Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced Saturday the club has acquired former first round draft choices Chris Stewart(notes) and Kevin Shattenkirk(notes) along with a conditional 2011 or 2012 second round draft choice from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Erik Johnson, Jay McClement(notes) and a conditional 2011 or 2012 first round draft choice.

by jaytown99 on Feb 19, 2011 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

Also, regarding the"protected" clause if anyone else was curious:

According to Bob McKenzie, the condition on the St. Louis 1st rounder is “it’s top 10 protected. In other words, if St. Louis’ 1st rounder is top 10 this year, Colorado gets 2012 pick instead.”

Maybe the Leafs should have included a clause like that when the made the Phil Kessel trade.

Also, I find it most informative to look at each fan bases’ blog to gauge their reactions to the trade, so if anyone’s interested.

Colorado: http://www.milehighhockey.com/

St. Louis: http://www.stlouisgametime.com/

Quick and dirty: Colorado poll on the trade indicates 33% like the trade, 31% don’t, and 35% are undecided. Certainly massively mixed reactions on both sides, some think it’s the greatest trade ever for their team while others can’t believe what they just read (although I gathered many of these people were speaking out of context probably rarely if ever having seen them play).
It looks like Colorado and St. Louis are playing on Tuesday as well.

by jaytown99 on Feb 19, 2011 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

Undecided. In terms of upside, Johnson’s clearly the best of the three. It’s not coincidental that his comparable was Scott Stevens on draft day. Big, fast, cannon shot (except righty instead of lefty). On the other hand, he’s had a mediocre season. Seems like the Blues were selling a bit low on a 22-year old kid who missed an entire year of development when he had the freak knee injury.

Stewart is a talented power forward and it seems like the Avs are likewise selling low on him. He’s had a down year after injury and he’s played really poorly of late. On the other hand, when healthy he’s a legitimate 35/40/75 100PIM power forward who shoots for a high percentage. On yet another hand, he’s never played a full season of professional hockey and his style of play will often lead to him being out of the lineup. Furthermore, players like Stewart tend to age fast and drop off hard in their late 20s and he’s already 23.

Shattenkirk came out like gangbusters and, while nobody expected him to keep scoring at that rate, he’s still a damn good defenseman. I think this is where the Avs sold high. Shatty’s good, but his production is going to be tied to PP time and he might not get as much in StL.

Moving Shattenkirk is confusing, however, in light of the Colby Cohen for Matt Hunwick trade earlier this season. If Colorado wanted to get bigger on defense, then why trade Cohen for Hunwick? I guess I thought that the Avs traded Cohen in part because Shattenkirk was so good, so quickly. And now they’re both gone. The Avs have lots of D prospects, but most of them are a few years away.

From StL’s perspective, they had better hope and pray that Johnson doesn’t reach his potential. The kid has hall of fame upside and being a big-bodied defenseman who can skate and shoot the puck, he’ll likely be very good for a very long time (since defensemen tend to age well).

For Colorado – I’m not sure why they didn’t try to get something better back than McClement. He’s older (27) and slow and kind of a “meh” grinder.

As for the picks – Colorado clearly got the better end of the deal, but if the pick is delayed until 2012, that pick probably won’t bear NHL fruit until 2015, at which point Colorado ought to be well into their Cup window with guys like Stastny and Duchene.

I guess this is a head-scratcher from both sides. In the short term, I think StL “wins,” but if Johnson reaches his upside, then Colorado wins this one long-term.

I blame Schultz

just a few nitpick details

Shatty should get PP time in STL, as I don’t think they really have D left who can really move the puck super well.

Also, McClement is not top 6 material, but he is a damn good defensive forward. McClement for Selke was no joke last year.

Orlov

To me the mystery with Orlov isn’t that he’s on his way – given the dates previously mentioned, the KHL team’s comment and the player’s comments – it is what type of contract is entered into, etc.

- Sign AHL PTO or AHL SPC: Get an exemption from the AHL from the rule about waivers required for players playing in Europe returning after some time in December – Tim Leone reported this was a possibility.

- Sign AHL ATO: See the Joensuu/Islanders example from 2007-08 season that I previously mentioned on the boards.

Also, at the NHL level, I assume this means a contract with the Capitals has been pretty much worked out (Gandler is his agent.) Worth noting that there is a clause in the CBA that draft picks can sign entry level contracts that are for the following season (not this season) starting on March 1 so perhaps we hear about an ELC on March 1.

Given the D situation in Hershey right now, even with McNeill being sent back, there could be an opportunity for playing time once he gets acclimated. Hershey has a busy February as has been noted. I assume they will give Orlov plenty of practice time/skating before playing him if they have the option, but with all the games and injuries, who knows. Plus the contract timing and whether that impacts when he dresses for a game.

Given the fact that Richards is currently out with “head injury”, I’m now a little iffy at acquiring him for the long term.

Granted, his contract is expiring and we could probably afford him as a rental now. But dumping Semin to clear the space for him now seems like an iffy strategy. It seems like a more appropriate time for that would be the off season where the management could decide which guy is better for our long term plans.

Interesting stuff on JRR this morning, particularly from Rob Rossi who believes the Caps could be the team that shocks everyone in the East. He also believes the Caps should be all in for a big move at the deadline. That sentiment was echoed by Alan May who thinks the Caps will make major moves, as in a center like Arnott and a forward like Hemsky. The next week should be fun.

So true—definitely good stuff. I’ve been so gloomy about the Caps’ playoff prospects that I was shocked listening to both of them suggesting, even expecting, a splashy or big move and that this was a good year for this team to go for it. I don’t know what to think. But they certainly got me thinking. I do enjoy listening to May—he’s not shy with his opinions.

He’s exceptionally fast. Greasy speed, up there with Chimera and Johansson. He’s a smart player and generally very responsible on the defensive side. His issue is that offensively, he never really panned out like he should, because he’s a good passer and has a fine shot. He’s inconsistent offensively and can be streaky.

Is he a good player? Sure. I don’t know if he’s the best option at 2C, but I think he’s a realistic option personally.

That was my own opinion on the quality of teammates, exactly. Laich and Semin are a relatively good set of wingers for a second line. Semin is essentially a first line talent who plays on the second line for strategic reasons of wanting to build two scoring lines.

I do think Neil does great analysis, even if he sold Weiss short due to the “quality of teammates” thing.

I think there is a bit of confusion here.

1. I do not think Weiss is bad defensively. I think he may (and I stress “may” since I do not know of an easy way to get the QCOMP of Modano, for instance) be worse than some of the similar players that have posted better GVT, but I don’t think I ever said he was not solid defensively.

2. If we had Corsi numbers pre-2007 then I think it would be an easier argument for you to make, but GVT (even with it’s defensive component) provides a decent enough proxy for comparison.

3. Based on Rel Corsi QoT, the teammates he plays with now are better, and there is nothing BB has done this year which would lead me to believe that: a. he would be consistently paired with 21 & 28 or b. that one or both will be here for the duration of his contract.

4. You claim “so many stat fails” but give NOTHING in support of it. I see RLS did below but nothing that looks forward. I say the production from a 26 yo is pretty close to what you can expect over the next two years, which is the length of his contract. You disagree. That’s fine. Tell me why. Make a case other than “I’m sure he would if he got to play with Semin” which has no basis in fact.

5. You have yet to explain why Weiss is a “steal” at a $3.1 million cap hit or what exactly a “steal” is.

Again, I don’t mind criticism just back it up with something more than “because I said so.”

I have no dog in this debate (which I think is an interesting one).

However in this imaginary trade scenario I have a hard time imagining BB playing Weiss on the third line. Therefore I think stating he would likely see a lot of of time with Semin is a fairly safe assumption.

Hockey won’t hold still for a portrait. To gain a glimpse inside you join it in progress—just as the players do.

by capsyoungguns on Feb 20, 2011 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

By far the largest issue is this – the comparisons you’ve chosen to make are agnostic to zone-start and qual-comp. Weiss’s value isn’t in massive boxcar production (which is part of what GVT measures), it’s in matching up with the top line of the opposition and outshooting it, with tough zone starts. All GVT (and the boxcar) sees is the end result without context.

I would guess the disparity between the closeness of boxcar stats and GVT is due to the defensive side of the puck.

The forward with the best DGVT last season was Travis Zajac with a 6.2. No one else was over 6 and only 5 forwards were over five. The hypothesis that the difference between Weiss and his cohort (no methodology explanation?) is defensive is almost surely overstated at best, flatly wrong at worst. Unless you intentionally (or unintentionally) selected Selke candidates for the purposes of GVT comparison, it’s not likely that the difference is in the defense, especially given how aggressively Weiss is matched with the opposition’s top line.

These 19 similar players averaged 56 points the following year while playing 71 games and logging about 1,400 minutes on average. Weiss should come close to that production if we project his current boxcar stats over an 82 game span. To put another way, he should produce the same as the similar players did but would need another 11 games and approximately 200 minutes of ice time to do it.

Weiss has a PDO of 974 and a S% of 7.66. FLA’s PP was dreadful for the first half of the season. 7% conversion dreadful. Historically bad. Weiss gets considerable PP time, so his point totals are almost certainly affected by that. That also strongly affects GVT (but not on the defensive side).

Gabe, Tom, and a few others have noted that one of the major shortcomings of GVT is its failure to measure defensive contributions adequately. Guys like Manny Malhotra are undervalued because they do so much heavy lifting in their own end, but they allow guys like Kesler to take easier competition. Kesler’s DGVT is going to be higher this year than it was last year, but he’s taking on easier opponents and fewer D-Zone draws because Malhotra is doing what Kesler used to do. This is brilliantly outlined by Pass it to Bulis
.
Now that we’ve gone over that, let’s get into what ails the Caps at ES, where Weiss will do most of his helping – the rookie Cs are getting crushed. They’re not ready to take the minutes that they’re taking without significant shelter and there are only enough soft minutes for one of them. AO and Baxter have to take tougher starts and tougher opponents, accordingly and it’s no wonder that their numbers have suffered as a result. Weiss allows one of them to stay on the wing, or stay in the pressbox and for the other to get the very softest minutes available, while Steckel/Gordon get the 1st line and Semin/Weiss/Laich take the 2nd toughs (and really, how many lines in the league do you expect that line to lose the shooting/chance battle to?), which allows AO/Backstrom to destroy the 3rd lines of the league.

Is that worth 3.1 mil a season? You’re damn right it is. A player who takes on the opposition’s top lines, outshoots and outscores it on a Panthers squad without much finishing skill? A guy who makes everyone else’s job on the roster easier? A guy who allows MP/Marjo to get the shelter they need? Sign me the hell up.

To this I’d add that any stat with “relative” in the title by definition isn’t an objective look at a player’s quality. Caps forwards frequently come out looking poor in the relative stats because they are up against AO and Backstrom. Teams that are weaker make it easier for the top lines to put up gaudy numbers and the lower or middle lines to put up solid looking numbers. The Caps had a whole bunch of 20 goal scorers last year and lots of them were negative in the Corsi-Rel. Weiss’ linemates may look good by that stat, but it’s because nobody on Florida is good enough to push up the “off ice” component of the number. I don’t think it’s controversial at all to say that if Weiss were to come here, Semin would easily be the most talented player Weiss played with in years, regardless of what the Corsi-Rel says.

Crazy idea – can the Oilers give another team a player or a draft pick to entice them to claim Souray and take the money off their books?

Also – what happens if a team claims Souray and then sends him through waivers? Would the salary again get halved on re-entry? I’m not suggesting that’s an option, only curious.

EDM has to bring Souray up through re-entry before they can trade him so it’s a non-starter. Anyone that would trade for him would take him for 50% off and no assets. He’ll finish the year in HER and then EDM will try to move him over the summer.

Yeah, sure would. Either of those guys are expendable. If the right deal came along I’d move anyone but 6, 20, and 35.

Love the reality of your thinking. Who then are the Caps’ untouchables? Often times seems on this board that there are many more than three.

I’d venture that discussions about 8, 19, 74 and 52 are non-starters. Everyone else has a price at the outset.

I’d throw in Alzner. Too young and too good defensively.

I was going to say there are levels of “untouchable”. I would definitely throw Alzner in the reality level untouchable. Without Carlznerson playing as well as they have this year our D would have looked sooooo much worse off right now.

Obviously in the unrealistic world of super trades that would never happen virtually no one is untouchable other than the 4 Spidey listed.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

by Davethecapsfan on Feb 19, 2011 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

I think you have to look at ‘untouchables’ as world class, completely irreplaceable players. Nashville only has three, but they absolutely have to keep them, because, like I said, they can’t be replaced by anyone. Fisher, Wilson, Franson, etc. can all be found elsewhere, so to speak.

For the Caps, I would say that 74, 8, and 19 are non-starters. I’d be open to moving Green if I were you.

Between what you could get back for him and his ‘replaceability’, you’d have to consider it. Plus, he seems fragile.

If you could get a 3/4D plus a 2nd line forward, it might be worth it. Not sure you could get that much.

You should be able to get at least that much. 2nd line forward and a 1st, even. If Orlov is going to be a good NHL player, I have to think that Carlznerson are a legitimate no. 1 pairing in this league.

Oh how Mike Green’s stock is falling. You guys are crazy. He’s not very replaceable, there are only a couple guys in the league that can do what he does from the D spot. And Spidey, you’re talking about getting Jeff Schultz and Brooks Laich for him? Green is a straight up difference maker. If we move him without getting a difference maker back, we got ripped off.

That’s probably it, but even Gretzky got traded. I might cut the list to just 8, and even then I’m sure there’s an offer I’d think about (especially if he keeps playing like he has been this season).

Would you turn down 5 first round picks for those guys?

by Rob Parker on Feb 19, 2011 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

There is always a scenario where even 8 could be traded, a la Herschel Walker.

In a realistic world, however, I think it’s 8, 19, 74 and 52.

Souray’s cap hit for the remainder of the season will be 726,000, followed by a 2.7M contract the following year. Who do you see making a play to pick him up?

I thought, perhaps Vancouver with their depleted blue line, but they don’t have the cap room. In fact, I don’t think San Jose, Philly, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Jersey, or Montreal could, either. (My math may not be dead on, I’m trying to interpret Capgeek.)

That’d leave the Caps, Rangers, Penguins, Kings, Stars, Preds, Yotes, Ducks, and Bolts as playoff teams with enough cap room to make the acquisition. Of those, the Caps, Penguins, and Rangers would not have enough cap room to endure the 2.7M hit the following year, and are thus unlikely candidates.
