Japers' Rink Pick-Up 12/2011
It's that time of the year again. Docciavelli and I threw around the idea of getting the annual "unofficial" Japers' Rink pick-up game going. Gauging an interest amongst fellow Rinkers for the "unofficial" annual Rink pick-up game. Who's interested? What weekends are good? Kettler seems to be the default rink. For general info on what's been done in the past refer to this.

On another note: Docciavelli and I threw around the idea of helping out RedBirdie with her fundraising efforts at the Pens-Caps game.
Hi. My name is Christoph J. I'm a Caps fan.
which I am super excited about! Pick-up game and fundraising and beers sounds like a great idea.

I am interested in playing this year depending on the scheduling of it…also depending on if you guys need a pylon out there…

These games tend to include a really wide range of skill levels. No worries on that score.

I don’t have pads yet…but I’m willing to reprise my role of foul-mouthed coach (Unless there are kids around).
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
I’m not sitting on your bench anymore. I’m tired of being called a “Lazy Russian.”
Wait, am I just having a Coach’s Corner flashback?

PB…Initials? Skulls showing in force!

Which Skulls Team?
I know HS84’s on the Silver 3 team I’m playing next week (I’m on the 67’s). By the way, thanks for leaving those extra Natty Boh’s in the locker room last night—mighty nice of your guys. =)
Anyone else on that Skulls squad? Or on the Skulls Bronze 1? You think we could get Jack Duke to show? I could probably convince Russ Mosley to come out if he can get away from his kids for the evening.
Regardless, good luck in Eagle River if I don’t see you next week.

You’ll see me this weekend. We haven’t seen Jack in a while. I’ll talk to Russ on Wednesday though!
Look at me, Dustin! I'm a F%^king Icon!
I just started playing recently. But I am on the world champ bronze 3 skulls. Also headed to ER in February playing in the novice division..

We all gotta start somewhere. I hear Eagle River is a blast. The S-3 guys were talking to me as they were finishing beer in the locker room, and they said last year it was some of the most fun they’ve ever had.
Remember to grow some facial hair before heading out—you’ll get a layer of frost on your face.

does sometime the week between Christmas and New Years work for people? or are there better weekend? Just to throw it out there: Jan. 22 is a Sunday, Caps play in Pit at 3 pm. Potentially could meet up and watch the game before hand, then head up to the rink for the pick up game

you mean this weekend, the 10-11, or the January weekend?

Hi. My name is Christoph J. I'm a Caps fan.
my personal preference is one of those January games. I’m afraid people may be out of town or less inclined to participate because of family obligations on the 23rd and 31st. I know I’m kind of planning to be out partying with some friends after we watch the BJs game.

I’m thinking the Pens game on Sunday 1/22 would work best if we can get an ice slot after 6:30pm. Something like 8pm-9:30pm would be great.
FYI—would anyone be opposed to doing this somewhere besides Kettler? Like, say, Wells in College Park? We could hit Looney’s to watch the game, then head to the rink (it’s all of 3 mins. drive from Looney’s). I know the ice would be much cheaper.
Another alternative is Fairfax. We could watch the game at Hard Times, then head over to the rink afterwards.
I guess it all depends on how cheap the ice is. If it’s more than $150 cheaper, I’d say it’s worth it.

I’ve never arranged ice rental (I can hardly skate with my wrecked knees), so I’m open to whatever works for the largest number of Rinkers.

I can play and can play either goalie if needed or out. Will not be in town the next two Sunday’s and will be out of town New Years weekend. I also have my own adult league games on Dec 17th and Jan 7th. Other then that I should be good.
May need a goalie
Since KC’s not going to play, and we don’t know about anyone else. Thanks for the interest!

Schedule permitting, I’ll be there. Can’t do New Years or MLK weekends, though.
Sometimes, you really just want to hit a b**ch.
Recs Away
When this FanShot hits 25+ Recs, then we can consider that as sufficient enough interest amongst the Rinkers for this to move forward with planning + logistically. FYI … Just as a reference from past Rink games.

Playing Rink Rats/Rabbits bring:
Cash if you haven’t paid; a dark jersey and a white jersey; a water bottle; whatever equipment you think you need to wear.
Non-Playing Rink Rats/Rabbits bring:
Tinfoil hats, signs, haterade, assorted obsceneties, F-bombs, heckling, cheers, cameras, hats to toss on the ice for hat tricks, puck bunny shirts and wear (applicable to Rink Rabbits only, unless you’re into that kind of thing), porcupines, the Goat, the Horn Guy, the Capstronaut, whatever …
A Word On Hitting:
Same as the last three pick-up games. General guidelines per Fehr And Balanced (aka Rob Parker) … “No kill shots, nothing out of control, nothing that could get someone hurt. Take a few minutes to figure out where the competitive level is at before you take the body. Try to just play physical with people in your own skill set.” Further clarification per David Getz… “Hitting to displace the man from the puck is okay; anything more than that isn’t.” And some sage advice from JordanDC… “Also, don’t give it if you can’t take it.” Fair enough?
Any douchebag (i.e. Avery, Cooke, Kaleta, Lapierre, Orpik, Briere, Carcillo, etc) -esque behavior will not be tolerated and will result in justifiably being Evander Kane’d by Sct112. Consider yourself sufficiently warned.
… Good Luck. Let’s see if we can make this happen, whether someone steps up to the plate or a collective effort occurs. Either way, here’s hoping there’s another Japers’ Rink game …

it is looking like the PIT game will work out best.

Contacted Fairfax and Rockville--no dice.
Both places are filled on 1/22. Haven’t heard back from Wells yet, and I haven’t had a chance to catch up with Kettler.
What’s the latest everyone would be willing to play on Sunday 1/22? 8:30-10pm? 9-10:30?

You could also try Mt. Vernon or Tucker Road. I know someone who has rented ice at Mt. Vernon on Fridays and it doesn’t cost too much, like $17 a player for 27 players, something like that. I also know Tucker Road has a lot of ice available just not sure what times it is.
Just called Mt. Vernon: They’ve got nothing on either 1/7 or 1/22. Calling Tucker Road shortly.

Tucker/Wells Possibilities:
Wells in College Park has ice on Saturday, Jan. 7th from 8pm – 9:30pm (Caps/Sharks at 10:30 that evening). Rate is cheap: $230/hr.
Tucker Road in Ft. Washington has ice from 8:45 – 10:15pm on Sunday, 1/22. It’s only $276/hr as well, so it’s pretty reasonable.
I’ll check with Kettler to see what their schedule/rates are next, but that Wells slot on the 7th sounds pretty good. We could play, then watch Caps/Sharks in College Park at Looney’s, etc.

I could do either but would rather do Tucker not just because it was closer but also if we are watching the Caps after on the 7th and they don’t start until 10:30 I would not be getting home until after 1. I have a friend who actually works at Tucker, I am going to see if there is anyway he can get any kind of discount for us.
Thanks for checking. Know what’d be fucking awesome (and free)? Good enough weather and ice for the C&O canal. #pipedream

That ain’t happening anytime soon. Especially after we get access to all that Canadian oil. 50 years from now, Eagle River might be a water polo competition.

Pencil me in. And for those worried about being a pylon, the first time I played in this pickup game I had been playing for maybe 6 months. I was awful. Pylon didn’t do it justice. It was still a blast, and everyone was cool about the varied talent level.
Skill Levels
I mentioned over at Pensburgh that the general skill level needed would be Bronze-3/C-3 level hockey. In other words, if you can play in the lowest level adult league at your local rink without falling down when the puck comes near you, you can play this. This is the point at which F&B reminds me how often I fall down when the puck comes near me (not my fault if Kettler doesn’t properly rubberize their restrooms).
The better players will generally try to feed pucks to everyone else. We usually have three or four Gold/A or Silver-1/B-1 level players that show up, and they’re pretty good about not puck-hogging or showing everyone up. It doesn’t hurt that there’s no hitting, and any physical play is pretty much kept to the guys/gals who play regularly. If you’re a relatively novice player, most of us won’t pressure you too hard when you have the puck, so don’t think that you won’t get a chance to carry the mail at all.

Happy to come out and do the photographer thing for this event, have done a few gigs at Kettler for Capitals events and love getting shots from Hockey that are just so.
Drop me a line once the time and date is locked in and I will be there if not already booked up.

Hi everyone :) Long time no see/talk!
A friend of mine asked me to post this so he/she can remain anonymous -
A pair of lower level tickets (Section 121) for the Boston game on Sunday, February 5th at 12:30pm are going to be available for raffle at this pick up game/fundraiser … all payments from Rinkers skating/playing and those that want to contribute on their own will be eligible for the raffle!
Hope everyone is doing well – I do still lurk here sometimes, but things have been crazy busy. I miss you all!
