- Mike Knuble is movin' on up to the east side (of Marcus Johansson, if the Caps are skating south-to-north), to a deluxe assignment on the second line. [WaPo,]
- Roman Hamrlik is day-to-day with a lower-body injury (and no, it's probably not pylonitis). [WashTimes, DCEx]
- There will be no supplemental discipline for John Carlson following his questionable hit on Matt Cooke in the waning moments of Thursday night's game. [Puck Daddy, WaPo, PHT, Empty Netters, PensBurgh]

- ... because they're not having any fun. [BS]
- Or maybe Huntsy should just unleash the fury, err, offense... [BS]
- But that's not likely, so it's good that the team's buying what Dale's currently selling... [KOL]
- Especially John Erskine. [WaPo]
- Some thoughts on whether the Caps picked the right guy for the job. [CSNW (video), with some related thoughts at WaPo]

To be clear, I don’t know anything other than a star player has been healthy scratched twice in quick succession (and I don’t even know he’s healthy).

I’d bet on the not really healthy before I bet on a trade, or maybe Dale is just sending a message.

Well if Semin’s on the move the Caps need another winger who they can flip for with Milan Jurcina for next year’s leading scorer.

Unless and until we see a breakout game from Ovechkin very soon, the burden of the C will continue to be a topic worthy of consideration about what’s been holding him back. Then again, he continues his pursuit of supermodel looking Russian blondes in his spare time, which hasn’t exactly done him any favors in the past and seems to be an ongoing problem again this year.
How exactly has it not done him any favors in the past? Do we have evidence of anyone holding Ovi back from training or practice, or anything circumstantial even? He liked pretty Russians when he scored 65 goals, it’s not like anything has changed in that regard.
Proud member of the Popsicle Division of the Cupcake Conference.
Yes it has for the past two seasons. It might not have affected him when he was younger but it sure seems to be affecting him and his play now. Ovechkin was similarly distracted last year by a Russian blonde model he brought over and what were his offensive numbers? This year’s hottie tennis player is his new squeeze, and what has he been doing on the ice this year? It’s time he got his adolescent hormones in check and paid more attention to hockey. The Capitals are paying him millions to score goals. Period.
Guys date, have girlfriends, and many even get married. We just don’t hear about other players’ personal lives that often because Ovi falls into that celebrity camp. His every movement get recorded and tweeted for all of us to judge.
Having a girlfriend shouldn’t make a difference to anyone’s play, including Ovi’s. It didn’t seem to affect him in his early years. And if anyone is really concerned this current girlfriend will be doing her own traveling to tennis tournaments.

Not really ground breaking news because it doesn’t necessarily signify anything happening but Kuz to meet with Caps staff at WJCs later this month. Perhaps him coming over mid-season becomes more of a possibility if Semin is moved and we open up some cap-space? Just a thought…

Can’t come over to the NHL mid-season without first clearing waivers, which obviously would not happen.

I think that’s a dumb rule for prospects to which a team has exclusive rights. It should only apply to veterans who would be UFAs (like Nabokov last year).

I would worry about the cap-circumvention possibilities.
Also the bigger picture there involves some sort of KHL transfer agreement, which for the moment at least appears unlikely.

Chesnokov’s article was good, but I’d also like to see it in Russian. I’m curious how close the translation was. I did note that the phrase “coach-killer” was nowhere to be found. Things we come to expect like “It’s all on Ovechkin’s shoulders” or “He hasn’t won anything” were also absent.
And I love the optimism at the end of Chesnokov’s piece.
There’s hope that Ovechkin’s recovery from the slump will mirror the stock market — because after the deepest falls, the gains and bounces are even higher.

Not possible. Hunter has banished brain cramps! Looked at TOI in the Pitt game and Semin did not take any shifts in the 2nd period after the one in which Staal hit him in the back. His time in the 3rd was reduced and on different lines, so must have been an attempt to limit further injury in game. Thought it was odd at the time he wasn’t out with Ovi and Backs at the end to try to get the tie.

Keep Semin Please
Here we go again with the Semin trade rumors. I have been reading this blog for couple of years now and have heard and read about both sides of the argument. I do agree with his critics regarding his lack of intensity (sometimes), his bad penalties, and lack of emotion on the ice. However, watching him play this year I can tell he is trying very hard. We have to keep in mind that he is little peculiar, and even though he might look like he doesn’t care, I get the feeling that he really likes playing for the Caps. He gets along really well with lot of the guys in the locker room so there is no way he doesn’t care.
That side, the most important reason why I like Semin to stay is because he knows how to score goals. His current NHL stats are: 415 games played, 364 points (181 goals + 183 assists). Yes he gets hurt every year and doesn’t play all 82 games, but he can score. People also like to point out his lack of playoff performance, but his playoffs stats are not bad at all. He has played in 37 playoff games and has 30 points (12 goals and 18 assists). He is and has been one of the top players in the NHL. If you trade him, you will lose a top talent that can’t be easily replaced; 40 goal scorers don’t grow on trees. As far as I know we don’t have any snipers ready to come up from Hershey.
My last argument for why the Caps need to keep Semin is the lack of consistency on his line, in terms of personal. That line has been changed more times in the past 3 years than I care to remember. At the moment he is playing with #90 and #50. Can we all agree that 50 is not a second line player at this stage of his career? Will he ever be? Maybe, but if the caps want to win now I think we have to do much better than Eakin as a 2L. Mojo is good and getting better, even though he has had some really bad turnovers in our zone this year.
I like Semin, I like that he is a threat to score every time he gets on the ice. If the Caps want to win now, they can’t trade Semin for young players or picks imo. But GMGM has made great decisions so far, I am sure he knows what he is doing.
I’m with you. I’d rather keep Sasha and echo your sentiments on how he fits with the current cast of characters on the team.
I was thinking about all the publicity and began to wonder about Semin’s “brain type”. He’s obviously an introvert or Back Brain. Given that he’s considered to “lack emotion” on the ice, he’s probably more of a thinker than a feeler or, as the Brain Type folks say, an Inanimate rather than an Animate. So, we’re starting off with an Introverted Thinker. Probably more of a Conceptual (i.e. “N” type) as opposed to Empirical “S” type since we can rule out both ISTP and ISTJ as ISTP’s are the type who are uber intense and would kill their grandmother to win (I bet Dale Hunter is an ISTP) and ISTJ’s are the types who follow the rules and toe the line. So that leaves either INTJ or INTP. The latter is the Einstein type and is super rare in sports. I’m leaning more towards INTJ as he impresses me as awkward in motion rather than smooth. Both of those types are commonly found in the IT profession which is what I do.

Jay Beagle talks about his setbacks, skating, and if he thinks he can come back this season. Hopefully he’s feeling well so he can get back into the games!
“We are adapting to the new system. We play a lot more behind the net, in the corners, and that’s different from what we had to do before. Before, we would shoot as soon as we get in the zone. And now we are trying to create certain scoring opportunities. Again, this is a new system for us and we have to learn it as soon as possible to produce.”
Music to my ears. It sounds like BB was actively coaching them to shoot as soon as they entered the zone (or at least that’s what AO was interpreting) so it’s nice to see that their orders have been made clear: cycle the puck more.
Please, call me F&B.
All of this just makes me preach the idea of patience more and more. Short term we will see some growing pains…but if DH can actually get this to stick with the players and they buy in, long term we will see the benefits.

Trying to turn the Caps into a hardnosed hockey team. If it works, they’ll be in better shape for the playoffs.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Is this a roster that can do it?
Different era, but in 91 and 92, the Pens traded away John Cullen, Zarley Zalapski, Mark Recchi, and Paul Coffey and got Ron Francis, Ulf Samuelsson, Rick Tocchet, and Kjell Samuelsson in return. I was living in Pittsburgh at the time for college, and all those trades were, at first, universally derided. But they worked out in the end.
Do you trade Green and Semin to get different players (equally talented but with different talent sets)?
I don’t think Green’s skill set is a negative at all to that sort of team. A healthy Green could help any team.

Good lucking finding players equally talented as Green and Semin. At best they’ll be not too much less talented but more durable. But even that would be hard to find, especially in a real trading partner. (Not a HF Boards trading partner.)

Playing hardnosed hockey is a great idea and might actually work for a while in the regular season once the players get accustomed to it. I still have serious doubts they can follow through with it in the playoffs when it matters, especially in games when things aren’t going well and they have brain cramps. It’s happened before, and I have no reason to expect things to suddenly change. Maybe they’ll surprise me this year.
I think teams reflect the personality of the coach and I definitely think so in this regard. We shall see.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Brain Type of Hunter Vis a Vis Boudreau
I was actually thinking about the Brain Types of our coaches. Hunter is probably an ISTP (or in Brain type parlance BEIR). He’s got one of the best brain types for an athlete and a type that is uber intense and would kill his grandmother to win. Considered an introvert.
Boudreau is an extrovert, as evidenced by the fact he’s called Gabby. I figure he’s probably more of a left brain rather than a right brain. Left brainers (or J types) are more likely to come up with systems but find it harder to adjust on the fly. Boudreau is likely an “N” type (or conceptual) as opposed to an Empirical or “S” type. It would not surprise me if he’s an ENFJ, which is a type considered to be a good teacher and inspirational leader. Hunter and Boudreau are likely opposite types.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
This is music to my ears as well.
However, when I was reading Anaheim Calling to get a temperature on their reaction to BB’s hiring, I laughed when I read this quote about BB’s system. The grass is always greener on the other side:
but I am hearing that his system is simple: cycle less and score off the rush more. That means no more dump and chase! A system that releases our scary snipers can make this team lethal.
Perhaps it’s not so much a result of players tuning out their respective coaches but that other areas of a players’ game not emphasized by that coach become progressively weaker.

Definitely good to hear. Certainly doesn’t jive with the media narrative that BB was trying to get him to play a different game and AO just refused to listen.

It should have been 2 minutes for elbowing, no question. Is there a related, similar hit this year that earned a suspension or fine, from a player with no prior history (like Carlson)?
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 3, 2011 2:04 PM EST up reply actions
Yup. I saw the play as that sort of self-protection elbow of a guy who’s trying to get somewhere and who is being impeded that you sometimes see. It’s almost a swim move.
It’s illegal. He deserved a penalty. Maybe more than 2 minutes. You can’t do that. You must be in control of your elbows, like your sticks. And you especially have to be conscious of that in these days of heavy headshot penalties. This is worse than Steckel on Crosby because Carlson actually saw Cooke and decided in that split second to use his elbow in that way. Dumb move.
But deserving of a suspension? I don’t think so. This is one of those situations where I don’t much mind using the injury (or its lack) to assess the effects. It’s very hard to tell how hard an elbow is from what you see in a video. The effect it had on the recipient can help in that respect. And this elbow wasn’t bad enough to really hurt Cooke. It could have been. Carlson must have been holding back.
Carlson wasn’t headhunting, he was reckless. Chalk it up to a missed call, and let’s move on with our lives.

From watching their feet, I think #74 was definitely holding back. He’s leaning away from Cooke as he turns and has his right foot off the ice when they collide.

And what's up with Carolina at zero?
Unless the arena is in the middle of a barren wasteland or surrounded by elementary schools I don’t believe that for a second.
I don’t want to click on the link so don’t know what distance they are using, but the NC arena was built on the NC State Fairgrounds; it’s next to the NC State football stadium. While some homes one direction, not exactly next door and there is a lot of open space around and businesses where it is not open space/parks/cemetery, etc.
It's Battle of California and quite funny actually
and they use a 1.5 mile radius. Makes sense on Carolina then.
On the CSNW link on the roommates with names starting with “O”. It’s great that our Russian guys (Ovi and Semin) have been helping out Orlov. With the news that Ovi is letting Orlov move in with him.
Earlier, we had heard that Semin was giving Orlov rides to and from practice and Verizon Center and even invited him for Thanksgiving Dinner (when hearing the news that Orlov had nowhere to go). Well, hopefully, Orlov will get his drivers’ licence soon but at least he can ride in to practice and games with him.

Gotta start calling him Vechkin, ‘cause there’s no O in Ovechkin. Kinda like the Irk Nowitzki Joke.
Stories like this about Ovechkin and Semin give me reason to believe they both still care about the team by taking care of new Russians who need help adjusting. It does offset a little bit my negativity and pessimism. Semin has always been a bit of a flake and a mystery, not showing his feelings very much. But Ovechkin, on the other hand, has seemed to retreat into a shell with very little emotions being displayed. He seems even more cautious and it’s resulted in his being offensively challenged on the ice. I wish I knew why Ovechkin seems so un-Ovechkin like.
