Still lots of room for improvements of course, starting with the penalties in the second. And they need to win a few in a row to build up momentum and confidence. But at the moment I am savoring the win.

I couldn’t disagree more. Frankly, I think what he did as a player, in a different era of what was tolerated on-ice, etc., is completely irrelevant when it comes to him advocating as a coach on behalf of his players.

I think that’s the rational way to look at it, so I guess I’m speaking more about how the media reaction would be. Say Ovie gets nailed two seconds into a post-goal celebration into the boards and dislocates a shoulder. What does Hunts say then?

Oh, there will certainly be that element in the media and the blogosphere because it’s juicy and controversial and full of shit.

It definitely offers a glimmer of hope that the offense has a chance to turn it around. I’ve been less and less worried about the defense with each passing game under Hunter.
The things that worry me about the defense aren’t so much system-related as they are personnel-related. I still am not sure they have enough of the right guys to play the Hunter/Johnson way, and the top-four are playing an awful lot of not-easy minutes (which makes them each more or less indispensible – lose one of those big minutes guys, which I know they have already, and it hurts even more than it would have under a more balanced distribution). I’d love to see Dale be able to spread the minutes a bit more, as it is only December…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Hopefully three things happen to alleviate the wear and tear issue on the D.
1. The team starts winning consistently, regains some confidence and DH32 decides that each game isn’t necessarily a must-win (doubtful)
2. Mike Green returns (likely)
3. Mike Green stays in the lineup (less likely than 2)
Somewhat related to point 1, the Caps took a three-goal lead with 6:14 left. Even then, the Big Three (6, 27, 74) got four shifts each the rest of the way, Hamrlik got two, Orlov one short one and Sarge zippy.
From the time it went to 3-1 (~10 minutes left), six shifts for each of the big three, three for Hamr, two tiny shifts for Orlov and none for Schultz.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Agree 100% this is concerning. Remember when it seemed like the Caps had a ton of depth on D? I guess they still do, but the problem is that DH and JJ don’t want to play half of them.
They just don’t want to play shultz and that is heavily eschewing the times. Wideman should get about 5 minutes less. Orlov is a rookie so sub 20 minutes isn’t a bIg deal but they seem to be giving him some good minutes. Green coming back would really rebalance the times especially if they keep Dima up
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.

Hoe soon – or has it already happened – will this system be put into place in Hershey?

I don’t imagine Coach French is going to be changing the way he does things to accomodate the affiliate’s system.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
They changed to an extent to start the season to reflect what the Caps were doing and the D were struggling. I doubt they will make massive changes mid-season, but I think they will modify some as they go.
I have been thinking about it last couple of weeks and I don’t think the personnel in Hershey and in particular on the D could play this system. It will be interesting to see if they try to implement it.
Having a coach who’s unfamiliar with a system trying to force it on personnel that can’t play it sounds like a recipe for success…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
You think.
One thing to note for people not familiar with French is that his ties to Boudreau and Woods don’t extend beyond his time with Washington/Hershey. He also lucked into the asst job at the time in terms of timing and everything that happened mid-season.
Asst Coach Mann has a longer history with the other 2, dating back to the late 90’s in Mississippi and for Woods/Mann to Tallahassee in the 90s.
French was in South Carolina prior to Hershey, correct?
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$718.07!
No. French was coaching in the CHL, was fired, took a volunteer (IIRC) position assisting in Reading (near Hershey) and happened to be nearby when Boudreau was promoted to Washington and Woods to head coach in Hershey. From reports, he wasn’t Woods/Yingst’s first choice for the asst coach position but he was the one available and nearby and it worked out.
The last 2 coaches in SC have moved on to other organizations. I was expecting/wanted Bednar, the SC head coach at the time, to be hired by Hershey when they hired French as the head coach. Bednar left that summer. He went to Abbotsford, AHL, as an asst. (Calgary’s affiliate) and now is the head coach in Peoria (St. Louis’ AHL affiliate).
thanks for the clarification! Yeah, I think it’s worked out okay.
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$718.07!
Yeah but,
don’t most teams coordinate systems with their affiliates so when a player is called up he can hit the ground running. If French is still coaching BB’s Hybrid or whatever anyone who gets called up will have a steeper learning curve than if they had been working Dales style down at the farm. It is still ostensibly a developmental league right? Well then they should be developing players to fit with the big club.
It's not that I don't like people, I'm just happier when they're not around - Hank Chinaski
If the Caps wanted a puppy factory, they wouldn’t be partnered with Hershey.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Are they that independent that they wouldn’t try to get on the same page as big club for the sake of ya know, consistency? I didn’t realize that and if so, doesn’t seem right.
It's not that I don't like people, I'm just happier when they're not around - Hank Chinaski
Hershey, more than any other AHL club, wants to win. When the partnership with the Avs expired, they felt a partnership with the Caps gave them a better chance to win. (and they were very, very right)
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$718.07!
Plus it’s too soon to train the puppies when the big dogs are still learning.
Seriously though I agree. Hershey IS more than most AHL clubs.
Plus, because the Caps hired their head coach the systems continuity was a natural byproduct. It was already in place for Hershey. Very different scenario in this case. And French has already proven that his version of BB’s system can win it all at that level.

As JP notes the top 4 D will take a ton of wear and tear, and when you play things so close to the vest, one little bounce or bad decision can kill you. For instance, without 3-4 tremendous saves by Neuvirth last night, Nashville probably carries a lead into the third.
On offense, you would think some shots have to start oging in sooner or later.
Patron saint of quality footwear.

Yep, and that’s why I made references to these games as “coin flips” in yesterday’s post on the Trapitals.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Hah, Trapitals, love it. And coin flip is completely accurate.
I think it was Vogel who mentioned that after BB went to the trap, the Caps had an extremely good record in 1-goal games last year. Or maybe that was you. Anyway, the author didn’t come right out and say it, but in what is essentially a coin flip – perhaps a weighted coin flip, but still a lot of chance in the equation – they got awfully lucky.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
By most accounts, winning one-goal games isn’t the repeatable skill most would narratives would have you believe it is. So yeah, coin flips.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
So breaking up the 8-19-28 line led to more offensive chances and more goals. With all the smart people here in the Rink, i’m shocked no one suggested that Hunts break up that line. Shocked.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
Yeah, who could’ve seen that coming?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The second line sure was sweet. Not so sure about the top line – Brouwer’s goal was on the PP, and the AO goal was an Alzner production (a Karl Alzner joint?) moreso than anything his linemates did. We’ve all seen what happens in the past when you rely on Laich to drive offense, but maybe in a grindy, forecheck-y system, they can produce some results short term.
by Twenty Seven Ninety on Dec 21, 2011 8:05 AM EST up reply actions
With Laich that line controlled the puck well, especially in the first. I wasn’t sure about Laich on the top at first because I don’t think of him as much of a playmaker, but perhaps that gritty, grindy defensive style is what that line needed.

I saw that as designating Ovie as “the man” on that line and then assembling a viable scoring line outside of Ovie. It was a throwback to the pre-Backstrom days and as long as Ovie shoots every time he gets the puck it works. When the Ovechkin line is on the ice all his linemates have to do is fetch the puck and feed it to him. It simplifies his game back to what he is the best at – skating hard straight ahead and shooting from anywhere and everywhere.
I don’t think 19-90 is a long term solution, but I really liked the speed they bring. Makes the dmen back off. Would not mind seeing 8-19-90 as a changeup every once in a while, particularly against slower dmen.

He’s had some wide-open looks that he’s gone full-bore on and just totally whiffed. Really, he needs to start getting it on net.
I also think he’s a small bit of an adventure in his own zone. He’s made some mistakes that haven’t yet burned the team. Not a huge adventure; his athleticism has allowed him to mostly make a decent play with the puck on his stick. But he’s made some ill-advised passes – I think he fed it to Hamr in the slot once with a guy right on top of him, which resulted in a predictable turnover – and he’s whiffed on a few clears. He’s also blown a coverage or two that I’ve noticed that resulted in a good chance, but Neuvy made the save.
All that’s reasonable, as he’s a rookie.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
I completely agree with you in terms of his own end. The thing I wonder about is if its better to have a young offensively talented D-man who is a bit of a mystery in his own end, and then to groom him from there on D, or try and have the reverse happen.
Better to have a good offensive D and then either teach or work around (Marc Andre Bergeron nods emphatically here) the D issues.
Offensive D are just so rare that when you get one it’s a major bonus. And the speed, athleticism and instincts that are a part of it are things that by and large cannot be taught. Positional defense, on the other hand, can be.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Schultz was pretty decent, to be honest, and his only real mistake was a miscommunication between him and Neuvirth that I thought Neuvy should have played. He also recovered well when he and Hamr were split and the Predator snuck between ’em.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Agreed. I thought he played mistake-free in the first. But he’s definitely thinking it too much right now; I closely watched his reaction when JJ got in his ear right after the error in the 2nd and he looked down. He was fine—again—on his two 3rd period shifts.

Heh. Not since the last time I took a gander. Outside of his handle though, his shtick is more about why King isn’t on the ice. The stupidity of sending him to Hershey. Why Erskine isn’t getting more minutes. And the Caps need to fight more. It’s all about the fighting for that guy (I’m assuming gender).

Cool bullet on Poile, and it reminds me of the time last season when Karl Alzner found a small locker in a hidden corner of the Verizon Center locker room that was labeled “POILE” on a strip of fading, curling masking tape. (Alzner didn’t think about the fact that it was weird to have an old locker for Poile because David Poile never GMed in this building). Alzner opened the little locker and found a small bottle. So he did what anyone would do — he used a little of the stuff inside. And this was the result.

Although Hunter is 5-5 in his short tenure, I find myself cautiously optimistic for all the reasons noted above. With this optimism comes trepidation in advance of Friday’s game in New Jersey. I’d like us to string together consecutive games of goals scored and few goals allowed.
What excites me most, however, is the defense:
- In the 10G since Hunter took over, the Caps have given up 23 regulation goals. In the last 10G of the Boudreau era, the Caps gave up 39 regulation goals. Big difference.
- In the same 10G, Hunter’s Caps have held the opposition to 2 regulation goals or less 7 times. In Boudreau’s last 10, they did this just twice.
Keep playing D. Goalies avoid softies, and the offense picks up. We’ll be in good shape. The season isn’t even halfway over yet.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

As tightly as their games have been and probably will continue to be contested, the D has a lot of pressure on them. Namely, don’t screw it up. Schultz did last night, and we saw the result.
The thing I was most pleased about? They showed some spark. After looking a little logey in COL, they were trying hard. I think I’m seeing buy-in from the core contributors.

Leonsis won’t risk anything until the team loses money. His lack of risk with the Capitals can be traced to his refusal or inability to part with GM George McPhee. McPhee has outlived his expiration date. Congrats on getting the first overall pick and not screwing it up. That was a really tough one. The Ovechkin era is going to be for naught if the team continues to be built the way it has been. The team is soft and lazy. This is the same story every year now. Lulls in goal scoring lead to an identity crisis. But nothing has changed.
This argument assumes several things: That George McPhee is the problem and his mistakes are worse than the things he’s done to benefit the team. The first overall pick is a no-brainer in every circumstance and is cakewalk. The “Ovechkin era” is an immutable thing (because no one ever gets traded..or fired..).
The reality is that lulls in scoring didn’t lead to an identity crisis. The identity crisis (via a sudden move to a more defensive system) led to lulls in scoring. Nothing has changed? Unless Bruce had reconstructive surgery and Eric Fehr, Boyd Gordon, David Steckel, Semyon Varlamov, and Matt Bradley got lost on their way to DC.. oh and I think Troy Brouwer is looking for Chicago. Red jerseys, they’re all so confusing.
One of my friends, a season ticket-holder, emailed him an article from On Frozen Blog that offered some criticism.
And then it’s not a surprise that OFB agrees with all of this guy’s opinions.
Anyone who thinks McPhee hasn’t done his job has only to look at where the team was in 2003-04 and where they are now. George built this team up from what was barely an expansion team. He traded off most of the veterans of the Poile era, gained some prospects and made some excellent draft selections to build this team into a consistent winner. The GM’s job is to provide talent, and George has done that remarkably well. Sure, the Caps were lucky when they won the Ovechkin lottery, but the player they likely would have gotten that year (Malkin) isn’t that big a step down from Ovechkin (and Pens fans would argue Malkin is a step up…)
That the Caps have fallen out of the playoffs in the past 4 seasons isn’t a product of George not getting good players. It’s product of players not showing up with the playoff bell rings. Of course some of this criticism falls on Ovechkin, but his numbers get better in the playoffs. Think the Caps might have gotten farther in 2010 if Semin had contributed more, or Mike Green (who was hurt)?
McPhee is not the place to look… it’s in the locker room. They made a change there, bringing in Dale Hunter… we’ll see what happens. So far the results are looking fairly good.

The draft isn’t an exact science, especially outside the first few picks, so while a valid concern, I don’t think it’s necessarily a major concern. And part of that may be development (which would lead back to coaching hires).
You tried your best and failed miserably. The lesson is "Never Try."
I think it’s fair to criticize GMGM for drafting, but it does seem he’s got the hang of it, at least post-2005 (even then, there was AnGus).

Well, I think the dradt is a critical component to building a strong franchise. But agree that it’s an inexact sciences but his success in those early years was bad. I will say he was probably dealing with a less than ideal scouting staff in those first years under Ted which I’m sure contributed mightly to the issues.

Some nonsensical contract extensions in there too, and some draft picks that have been complete disasters.

I think the contract extensions are a much greater GM sin than the drafting gaffes (though there is no excuse for AnGus). I appreciate the loyal soldier shtick and it plays well with other vets who would consider coming here, but the lengths and terms, and timings, of more than a couple have been…overly generous.

Regarding AnGus, I don’t think it’s a huge, ginormous gaffe on McPhee’s part. He reached, but IIRC Angus was a projected 2nd rounder anyway (like Finley?) and McPhee picked him ~20 spots too high (Carolina picked Skinner what, 30 spots higher than scouting had him?). Injuries were a known issue, but the whole “I don’t enjoy hockey anymore” was not.

haha, in retrospect it seems especially stupid. but at the time, picking him at 21 when he was the #5 ranked euro skater was not that bad.
I. Disagree.
At the time, picking him at 21 when he was the #5-ranked Euro skater was that bad, in part because of the injury history, but also in part because of his lack of desire to be an NHL hockey player.
At the time, we didn’t know that. At the time, the team should have known that – but should have – and that’s why it was that bad at the time.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Whoa. Nice sentence. I meant “at the time, the team didn’t know that – but should have…” My bad.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
There’s really no way to polish the turd that is the AnGus signing. Prior to the salary cap, well, a busted first rounder every now and then wouldn’t kill you. Especially if you have an owner with deep pockets.
But in a capped world…you just have to get value out of those ELCs. This team would look a LOT better with a respectable C in entering his prime.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
it seems a bit of a leap to assume that a team will be able to accurately spot someone’s lack of motivation in an interview. the scouting services certainly didn’t spot anything, or else he’d have been ranked lower. assuming the devils (?) didn’t pull a fast one on mcphee when they said they were going to take him, then they didn’t spot it either in their interviews. i don’t remember there being any whispers among the tsn people about his stock falling because of attitude concerns.
it’s easy enough to fake your way through interviews. it’s also possible for him to have changed his mind about playing pro hockey well after being drafted. i’m not sure it’s reasonable for a team to be able to accurately spot such things. i mean, it’s possible they could have, but i’m having trouble buying the “should have” — unless of course there were known warning signs that i’m just not remembering (nice hedge, huh?).
Two of the centers chosen in the next 5 picks were Jordan Eberle and Tyler Ennis.

I imagine every sports fan with a keyboard has either wanted to type out something like that or thought something like that at one time or another abot their sports teams. I’d go on to wager that any number of folks in these spaces might have wanted to dash off an e-mail or a letter with similar amounts of bile on any number of subjects, not just the Caps.
The trick is, write it…and walk away. Take a walk, sleep on it, watch an epidode of American Idol. Just don’t send it until you take some time and come back to it. When you do, I’d bet 99 times out of 100 you wouldn’t have sent it. I don’t fault the writer for writing this; I fault whoever thought it would be a good idea to publish it.
And it’s not necessarily because I disagree with what I think is the core point here. At the end of the day (that being when Ovechkin’s contract is up), will this franchise have a Stanley Cup replica (or more) in a glass case prominently displayed at Kettler Capitals Iceplex? Because if they don’t, then this era will be remembered for the colossal disappointments more than anything like a Conference banner or a President’s Trophy. It is, in my opinion, 100 percent true that drafting Ovechkin was the easy part. A chimp, or Mike Milbury could have done that. The trick was, is, and will be how the team around him is built.
To date, this regime has not found the key to unlock that door to a championship. One would have thought — on paper at least (and we sure did) — that this roster was the best ever assembled in the history of this franchise. But one would not have thought that Ovechkin would continue a funk that has gone on for going on two seasons. One would not have thought Alexander Semin had been spirited away by aliens and was replaced by one that didn’t have a clue. One might have hoped Mike Green would avoid the injury bug that has derailed his career the past few seasons. One might have hoped the second line problems that have bedeviled this team would resolve themselves as the season wore on and there was stability in the other three forward lines. One might have expected that getting a proven puck stopper like Tomas Vokoun and getting another year of experience under the belt of Michal Neuvirth would have made that tandem on a short list as the best netminding team in the league.
A season that started with so much promise finds itself stuck in a ditch. There is time to work things out, but the current state of the team isn’t lending anyone to thinking about parade routes. And if this team doesn’t win now — this year — then when? Vokoun isn’t likely to be here next season, leaving the goaltending chores to Michal Neuvirth (not the model of consistency this year) and Braden Holtby (who has not exactly electrified crowds at Hershey this year). I’d bet a shiny nickel right now Semin is not here next season. Kuznetsov? Uh, yeah…I’ll believe it when he actually skates in a game, and I would not expect him to be much of an impact player his first season or two.
The defense? Alzner and Carlson will be solid for years, but what of Green’s health? Orlov’s growth potential? Who is going to replace Schultz (who does not seem to fit in here these days)?
And the farm? Who on the Hershey roster right now can be considered a future solid citizen on the parent roster, let alone a star? Hershey is, at the moment, an AHL squad built for AHL purposes, not as a conveyor belt for prospects. That phase of the relationship — one that graduated Mike Green, Brooks Laich, Jeff Schultz, Alzner, Carlson, and Neuvirth, not to mention the departed Tomas Fleischmann, Eric Fehr, and David Steckel — has passed for the time being.
If this season ends poorly, I think it would be entirely reasonable to question the architectural ability of this regime — its ability to build a winner. They will have done the easy parts well (drafting Ovechkin and Backstrom, mostly) and the harder parts much less well.
I just wouldn’t have used the venom in that article (as much as I might have wanted to).

Can I insert a stupid gripe about On the Fly? Maybe more about the gal who hosts (name went right out the window at the moment). Watched a little as I was getting ready for bed. On the Caps game, two incredibly stupid errors – who writes this stuff? McPhee suddenly became “Mike”. And somehow, last night’s win was the second in a row. Did I miss a game between Colorado and last night? And the segment was repeated. You’d think someone could catch these errors and then have them re-tape the segment.

The big time enforcers of the day hated fighting guys like McPhee or Garry Howatt of the Islanders as they were small and got in close, so a roundhouse punch would swing wide most of the time. An interesting take on this is in Dave Schultz’s (….wait for it…. no relation!) book called “The Hammer”. A very interesting read on life in and out of hockey.

So when was the last time 3 of the young guns potted goals in one game….That was great to see.
I remember alot of folks here some time ago didnt think that Ovi had an above average influence on the other Russian players that came thru the system. Specifically we were talking about Kuz. It was nice to see NHL.com to a story on it. I have a lot of high hopes for DO81. Although many do not like Russian hockey players, I think although pretty obvious, the teams success is directly tied to the success of the Russian players in our system.

I find it rather interesting that with our Russian contingent at 3 players now, the only player that plays like a Rooskie is Semin. Who would have thought you’d find a power forward that plays like a modern Mario Lemieux in Russia? If Ovechkin was from Ontario Don Cherry would adore the way he plays the game.
Orlov has struck me as quite a find too. Hard checking, great hands, and making the adjustment to the North American game way faster than I had anticipated. He makes mistakes, but his skating is so good he’s able to recover more often than not.

The only goal Brads scored in 2010-11 that wasn’t against a 2009-10 Vezina finalist. Brads other three goals that year were against Brodeur, Miller and Bryzgalof.

Bruce ain’t having fun: http://www.ocregister.com/sports/boudreau-332390-team-ducks.html
Question: if he craps out with the Ducks, does he get another chance any time soon thereafter, or will he be “an AHL coach that just couldn’t hack it in the bigs”?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I guess it depends on how you define “soon” but I think he’ll have to sit for a bit. I don’t think it’ll be the nail in the coffin but it will scare off some people. I wouldn’t want to tell him how to handle his business, but maybe reflecting and sitting out a bit could have helped. At the very least, maybe wait for a better job to open up (although how much better does it get than having your dream job in SoCal?).
Please, call me F&B.
It gets better if you have the dream job and need that big cupholder.

Narratives being what they are, “failing with and without talent” isn’t good for Bruce’s bio. Granted, Anaheim stinks out loud and has the depth of a post on Pro Hockey Talk. But still, if you’re a GM, what kind of team would you have to have in order to tap Boudreau to be its next coach? Veteran… skilled… deep… contending… ?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
His NHL sample size is still pretty small, but just looking at his time with the Caps, he was most successful at the beginning of his tenure. Therefore, I’d say BB would be best suited coaching a younger team where expectations aren’t that high, and he has the opportunity to influence his players’ style of play the most. I guess right now I would view him as the Buck Showalter of NHL coaches. He does a great job of getting his team close to the top, but hasn’t shown that ability to put them over the top.

I see that as the greatest support for saying he shouldn’t have jumped at the Anaheim opportunity, even if his disposition says he needed to work. A few months on the outside as an analyst probably would have helped him a ton.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Yep, he dove into the pool without knowing how deep it was (or, in this case, wasn’t).
During the telecast the other night, they were talking about how Bruce readily admitted he was unfamiliar with the organization’s depth (again, or lack thereof). Maybe there’s a reason no fired coach had ever found another head coaching job as quickly…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The GM is as much to blame for jumping at the opportunity to hire him.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Maybe, though I’d assume that Anaheim was looking at Bruce long before he was looking at them. Anaheim was likely sitting there thinking, “If Bruce becomes available, maybe we cut Randy loose,” whereas Bruce was thinking about ice cream the Caps up until the end.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
that’s pretty much the story that was told by the Versus crew during the Ducks-Stars game the other night. Bruce gets fired Monday morning, Bob Murray wakes up in beautiful sunny SoCal, sees the news and called GMGM. “Hey, mind if I talk to your just-fired former coach? Thanks, man!” Ducks get the deal done with Bruce, Randy gets fired.

they both have some contracts coming off the books, but anaheim has more and more expensive holes to fill. they will have no second line whatsoever under contract, and their bottom six are already a disaster. i’d rather have tampa, although it’s not a slam dunk.
But I think they key is, they will “completely” bottom out and get high draft picks while TBL will be in a position where they won’t be good enough to compete for Cups, but they won’t be bad enough to get elite level talent.

SAGUENAY, Que. (CP) – Former NHL all-star goalie Patrick Roy is facing assault charges after allegedly getting into a shoving match following a major junior hockey game in Chicoutimi, north of Quebec City.
Roy, who both owns and coaches the Quebec City Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, is accused of hitting an opposing team’s owner.
Police say about 50 fans of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens prevented the visiting Remparts players from boarding their team bus after a Friday night game.
Roy reportedly then got off the bus and attacked the Sagueneens owner.
Police say they will interview witnesses before meeting with Roy in the coming days.

disagree with this. koivu and selanne are ufa’s, with selanne probably gone. that means they have no second line at all after this season, in addition to their already bad bottom 6. it’s not easy or cheap to replace an entire second line with free agents. plus, they’re trying to trade one of their top three to get depth, which makes sense. but they’re apparently shopping ryan, the only one under contract beyond next year, which doesn’t make sense at all. so after buying 2 or 3 free agent second liners next summer, they’ll have to re-sign both perry and getzlaf next season.

Neuvy
3 solid games in a row, a few more like that and Vokoun will be his backup
Voukoun seems super-competitive; I think he’ll make it a contest (at least I hope so) unless he’s lost his groove due to age.
by ShootTheBullets on Dec 21, 2011 12:31 PM EST up reply actions
One could argue, rather convincingly, that Vokoun’s been his backup for the last three games.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
very true, Neuvys play has earned him the starts
Vokoun has had his moments, but he has to be more consistent
No doubt.
I think attaching a title like “number one goalie” to either guy is kinda silly right now. It may make more sense to ask the question: “If the playoffs started tomorrow night (and the Caps were, uh, playing in them), who would be in goal?”
It’s hard to imagine that guy wouldn’t be Neuvy right now. But a lot can – and likely will – change.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Is it me, or does Vokoun sometimes get completely bent out of shape to play a puck that doesn’t require him to get bent out of shape? I sort of feel he just needs to be “quieter” in the crease, a la Neuvy, and things will turn for him.
At first I thought it was something along the lines of “Wow, Vokes is so excited to play for a team that can actually play defense in front of him that he’s playing himself out of position”. But the trend continued, so my theory doesn’t hold much water. Who knows what’s going on, let’s hope Neuvirth keeps it going in the meantime.

peering into my very foggy crystal ball, I see Neuvy starting in NJ on Friday (to ride that hot streak into Xmas), Vokoun getting the nod against the Sabres for a winnable road game Monday, and then probably back to Neuvy against the red-hot (but coming down) NYR next Wed

that makes sense, vokoun will get his starts but hey roll with the hot goalie and Neuvy clearly is it at the moment, this is his team for future so let him play as much as possible and Vokoun Im sure wants to be # 1 so he has to play better thats on him. I dont care as long as they are winning, thats all I care about
Let’s hope the HBO gods are merciful and we don’t get too many extended highlights on tonight/s 24/7 from the Flyers’ 5-1 thrashing last week
With luck the 6 to 0 loss to to the Bruins will be the focus: maybe the theme could be about how after solid wins against the Caps and the Habs the reigning SC champs kicked their butts thus demonstrating that on any given night any given team can be beat. Something about how it’s a long season with peaks and valleys.

Tarik has a piece on Ovi up.
Some amazing quotes from El Capitan:
Something Ovechkin no longer questions, however, is the fact that he’s a marked man. As recently as a month ago, he often dismissed such talk, placing the onus on effort level rather than tactics.
But now he seems more receptive to what his coaches have implored him to do for more than a year.
"I talk to guys from different teams," Ovechkin said Monday. "In meetings, they show video of what I did. So, of course, they know what I’m going to do exactly, in a certain time."
"You try lots of different things," he said. "You switch wings. Maybe make a move [down low]. …That’s creativity. I’m learning and trying to do better."

Tarik’s writing is in top form today.
We also believed Ovechkin might have returned after his memorable goal at Ottawa two weeks ago. You remember, don’t you? The one that began with Ovechkin circling the Senators’ cage and ending with defenseman Erik Karlsson eating ice shavings.

Writing an article about whether Ovechkin is “really back” is just a fluff piece, IMO.

I’m thinking that a streak of games with scoring a goal is a good indicator, no?
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
When he scores every game, “they” will complain he’s not passing or he’s not playing defense or he’s not leading.

Who knows. I think it’s every bit as likely that AO became self-aware in the wake of the coaching change or, even more likely, at that time GMGM sat him down and said, “Look, this is your legacy going down in flames while the rest of the hockey world points and laughs. But it doesn’t have to be this way…”
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’d buy the latter. GMGM is a wise man.

We can’t ever know for sure, but when one thing changes (coach) and then another thing changes (AO’s approach), and the prior coach mentioned his unsuccessful attempts to get just that change…well, it seem like there’s something there.
But who knows, it could just be that the shock of changing coaches and the coack-killer barbs finally got AO’s attention.

I agree—but believe it’s all of those things. Awareness from a 10,000 tiny barbs.
I also believe that there is something in Hunter’s expectations as well. I can easily envision Hunter telling him to stop worrying about crossing the line in his physicality. Sure play smart. Don’t board recklessly for example. But play hard. Be yourself. Be physical and ride that line. And accept the consequences should something go wrong and then go right back to it. Because playing it cautious is a recipe for failure. Oh and by the way I have some video for you demonstrating how you could change it up a bit.

I have an active imagination while running errands. But the three big Ovi hits right from the get-go last night had me excited. I noticed on the first one, that in the past that could have been a knee-on-knee, Ovi made sure their shoulders hit and let his leg fall back so that there wasn’t much contact there.

I worried about that for a split second, then watched the replay. Ovie skated straight at whoever that was that was hit, and made sure his legs were straight. The other guy tried to dodge, and it didnt work out so well. That’s not saying the ghost of NHL-discipline-past couldn’t rear it’s ugly head, but I’m doubtful.

So apparently Hunter is on a one-year deal and is being evaluated based on his performance this season. I kind of like it.
Hunter’s deal is likely contingent on the team’s success this season, said sources who requested to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to comment on the matter.
Not surprised at this at all. In fact, I probably would have been surprised if he had signed a multi-year deal.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Yeah, me too. I just don’t see the “there” there that some people see, that this somehow indicates that the team has soured on him already or is second-guessing the hire.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’m not surprised; I expect this has to do with Hunter’s wants as well if he decides this isn’t for him and wants to return to London. Also possibly with GMGM’s status if things don’t go well.
Boudreau was promoted on an interim basis and then at a later point a multiyear deal was signed. IIRC, the information that Boudreau was signed to a multiyear deal came out as follow-up to end of season interviews with someone (perhaps TEB) asking McPhee about Boudreau’s status and McPhee responding with the he’s our coach, he’s not going anywhere stuff.
I think Dale is going to do fine. Ultimately, however, his renewal or non-renewal may depend more on the fellows in the sweaters than on his performance….unless, of course, he pulls a few boners (so to speak). My sense, though, is that the guys are getting behind him and will do the best they can. If they don’t, then it might be a GMGM issue next summer, not a coaching issue.
