No doubt that’s it – brutal air-brushing. The full story:
During the summer of 1975, the Philadelphia Flyers traded center Bill Clement to the Washington Capitals. This transaction was apparently important enough to prompt Topps’ art department to revise their photo of Clement for their 1975-76 set. Unfortunately, his trade wasn’t quite worthy enough to merit revision to the entire photograph. Only Clement’s jersey had been altered to reflect the trade. His torso screams “Capitals,” while his legs (and heart, probably) still say “Flyers.”
The mismatched jersey and socks makes Clement look like some castoff from a third-tier European hockey team – just add a green helmet and some skates from the 1950s. What puts this over the top, though, as one of the worst paint-overs ever is that there are real Washington Capitals players present in the picture. Are we not supposed to notice that Clement’s socks are orange, while his teammates’ socks are white?
Worse yet, Clement was “given” double-zeros (00) as his jersey number. Strange that Topps would go the extra mile to add a uniform number – albeit an insulting one – but then totally ignore the legs.
As for the trade itself, it didn’t fare too well for Washington, who received Clement, defenseman Don McLean and Philadelphia’s first pick (18th overall) in the upcoming entry draft. McLean played a total of 9 games, and their draft pick – Alex Forsyth – only played one game. Clement was named team captain, but was again traded midway through the 1975-76 season before he could make any real contributions to Washington.
In return for their pick and the two players, the Flyers received the Capitals first pick in the draft. And since the Caps finished dead last the season before, their pick was the first overall pick. The Flyers reaped the reward of the Capitals’ on-ice and off-ice ineptitude, and used the first overall pick to draft junior league scoring sensation Mel Bridgman.
Just like Clement’s jersey, Washington got whitewashed.

That “trade an aging superstar for a first round pick” thing seemed to be a routine thing in the 70s. Isn’t that basically how Sam Pollock built all those great Canadiens teams?
Of course, it backfired on his successor when he tried to “fleece” them with Rod Langway.

That’s the legend, but Walter and Green won the Cup with Montreal in 86 and went to the finals again in 89. So, it wasn’t really a fleecing.
It's all wrong, but it's all right.
But under the circumstances, he was selling a player they believed to have a knee condition that would render him unplayable within a few years. And Irving Grundman was fired at the conclusion of that very season.

From the “The More Things Change…” file:
Bruce Boudreau, the team continuing to struggle since he took as over coach, said that it sometimes takes a goalie to be the one who snaps a team out of its funk. It didn’t happen in the Ducks’ 5-3 loss to the Dallas Stars on Monday night.
“We need to get it maybe better than it has to be at this stage, to get us in a mode where we start feeling confident about ourselves,” Boudreau said. "And then all of a sudden, we just need average goaltending. [Link]
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Goaltending is the problem? The Ducks penalty kill is 68.8 percent since Boudreau took over (they’ve allowed at least one power play goal in seven of nine games). Ten of the 33 goals they have allowed are power play goals.
They’ve allowed an average of 31.3 shots on goal per game while getting only 25.6 shots of their own. The top line has two goals in their last five games (Perry has both).
Well, maybe goaltending’s not the problem, and maybe if Hiller has a 35-save shutout things will get better, but that team is a 2-6-1 (since the coaching change) mess right now.
If you've read this far...seek help.

Yeah, they’re terrible, top-to-bottom.
It looked like Bruce has split Ryan off of the top line (last night, at least), so they rolled:
- 27.3% COGLIANO,ANDREW – RYAN,BOBBY – SELANNE,TEEMU
- 26.3% GETZLAF,RYAN – HAGMAN,NIKLAS – PERRY,COREY
- 21.1% BELESKEY,MATT – BONINO,NICK – PALMIERI,KYLE
- 5.3% GORDON,ANDREW – PARROS,GEORGE – PELLEY,RODNEY
Those lines have combined for 27, 25, 2 and 3 goals. Swap Ryan with Hagman and that goes to 22, 30, 2, 3. Bet he wishes he still had a fourth-liner like Knuble to kick around…
(And, by comparison, the thinking man’s Caps lines:
8-19-22: 24
28-90-20: 20
25-21-42: 22
26-15-85: 6)

Boudreau in Anaheim and Hunter in Washington might be revealing an unpleasant truth in the league. Here is how it goes…
- You can’t fire the players, so you fire the coach. Those players, though, have been coached in a particular system, and were probably obtained to fit into that system.
-
- If you bring in a coach that has a different (and it doesn’t even have to be radically different) philosophy, and the players have been ritualized into playing the old way… …then either it is going to take a while for those players to unlearn old ways and learn new ones (and maybe not in the season you made the change), or you are going to have to retool a good portion of your roster to fit the new ways.
-
The Caps actually had the reverse of this problem in 2007. They had a coach who favored structure and play-it-safe hockey, while the roster he had was a bunch of precocious skill players. The new coach brought a more open, flowing sort of philosophy with him. It made for an entertaining match.
The league is back to systems-based management of the game. All that “opening up” the game that was a part of the 2005-2006 season coming out of the lockout seems to have been smothered by the pre-lockout way of doing things. This does not bode well for Anaheim or Washington this season unless those players accelerate their learning curves. If they don’t, they are going to need some substantial work on their respective rosters.
If you've read this far...seek help.

I actually have a post related to some of these points coming up at 10. But yes, big time agreement, and it really emphasizes why coaching changes are best made in the off-season – so you can go shopping for the new guy and the new guy can meet you if not halfway than somewhere in between rather than trying to put the wings on the plane while you’re rolling down the runway, hammering square pegs into round holes, or whatever metaphor you like.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’m thus setting an alarm for 9am here in the CST. You know I share your opinion on this, which is why I am particularly unfond of folks that are complaining about Hunter. Coaching change should have been made over the summer or not at all, IMO.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
yeah but Hitchcock and STL has turned that team around immediately so Hunter, in his first NHL gig, should have the same results as a Stanley Cup winning coach in his 16th year as a NHL bench boss and those results should be just as immediate. Don’t talk to me about players, this is about the coaching.
/snark
I agree, either ride it out all year with BB or make the change right after the TB series and bring someone on and give them all summer to implement and change old habits.
I’m sure that was the intention, but it literally became untenable at the point at which Bruce said he didn’t know what to do. It probably could’ve been headed off at the pass a couple of weeks earlier, but wasn’t. Some men you just can’t reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it. I don’t like it any more than you.

The Caps were in a tough spot. In many (most?) ways, Bruce forced McPhee’s hand with those comments. As a result of the mid-season change, however, I believe we have to ratchet our expectations for 2011-2012 down a bit.

I’m too lazy to do the actual breakout, but Halak’s GAA in October was 3.58 and his SV% .843, followed by 1.55/.938 in November and 2.16/.918 in December, so I’d say he stopped sucking in a big way.

Hmm…
His one freakish talent does differentiate him in a positive way from most. But without his ability to win draws, I think he’d be pretty safely in the bottom half of fourth-liners, no? He skates poorly, doesn’t have much offensive skill of which to speak, doesn’t fight, doesn’t hit much… I guess it comes down to how valuable those faceoffs are, and judging from the TO PK, the answer is “not very.”
I’m not sure Steckel’s an “above-average fourth liner.”

Puck Daddy on Colby Armstrong’s concussion… and the fact that he hid it from the team.
But yeah, Brooksie, let these guys make up their own mind whether they play through ‘em or not – they’re in a great position to decide.

I think Grant’s take seemed relatively reasonable. He was honest, and maybe a lot of people don’t like that, but I didn’t see anything ridiculous in there.

I’d maybe link them in the vein of athletes and competitive nature, and still trying to break down that barrier, no?

I guess, but Grant seemed to be more thoughtful about it. I like to think that most people recognize the incentive for athletes to lie, recognize that careers and livelihood is on the line if they are perceived as injury prone. Grant didn’t lie about his injury, though, and he really just discusses unintended consequences regarding players not reporting concussions. He also talks about that fine line between “concussion” and “bell was rung.” And I think he hints at a scary thought when he says “have all NFL players had concussions?” I think that answer is probably closer to yes than no, but it’s something that needs to be talked about more.
In sum, I see Grant as raising some issues that could help advance the state of the debate and current policy, while Colby Armstrong hid what appears to be a serious concussion from his team doctors.
Please, call me F&B.

And since you mentioned an NFL player, why do you think NHL players seem to be missing so much more time with concussions than NFL players? Am I just overlooking a bunch of NFL guys? Is it just a period of bad luck for the NHL? Are the NFL players “tougher” than NHL players?
I had a discussion about this with my family, and my dad’s personal theory is that skating on ice requires a more sensitive sense of equilibrium. So if an NHL player has a concussion it will be harder for them to fight through the symptoms to continue to play effectively. I’m not sure if I’m convinced. I think there may be something there, but the margin for error is so small in the NFL that even if you don’t have the same balance concerns any impact on execution could have huge impacts in a game.
Please, call me F&B.
I think some of it comes down to the fact that NFL players are going on one game a week (more time to recover), and it’s a different game entirely in terms of action and “dead” time in that there aren’t a lot of players going every single down.
Now where's my hat? I'm going to the outhouse.

It’s funny, I was going to toss out equilibrium on skates in the post above. I think in between that and the immediate reaction by a player afterward (skating back to the bench vs. staying on the ground) more of that notice seems to occur in the NHL, and perhaps the incident leading up to it is more obvious than the NFL too.
Moreover, the whole subconcussions issue seems to be spotted more in the NHL vs. NFL, but I’m not basing it on anything (other than preconceived notion of what put Sid out against what they narrowed it down to).

It could be that the concussions from the game of hockey are simply worse. Hockey players tend to move at faster speeds, and a number of the plays that result in concussions leave the head result in greater changes of momentum. The type of collisions in football that result in concussions tend to be at lower speeds, and don’t involve collision into immovable objects (e.g., the boards).
Another alternative is that helmet protection in hockey hasn’t evolved to nearly the same extent that football helmet protection has. A different side of that coin would be that hockey helmets are less safe due to other design considerations (i.e., not disrupting a player’s sense of equilibrium).
Reporter: "What’s your Mom’s birthday?"
Tortorella: "I have no idea."
I’d buy the helmet argument more than the violence one. NFL has plenty of violent collisions that are on par with the NHL hits.
Please, call me F&B.
The really violent NFL hits, however, are generally on special teams plays, correct? If you take Gunjin’s point, the special teams players tend to be a bit lower profile, and generally more interchangeable around the league.
Reporter: "What’s your Mom’s birthday?"
Tortorella: "I have no idea."
Or on hits that James Harrison is involved in.
I think the violence of the NFL line is something that most people probably overlook.
Please, call me F&B.
As I’ve read, it’s not so much the “violent” hits that mess people up really badly, it’s the “repeated” blows to the head. Pretty much every single play linemen are cracking their heads together in really savage ways.

I think it has more to do with the fact that NFL contracts aren’t guaranteed, and unless you are a household name superstar, teams have absolutely no qualms about cutting a player and replacing him, so players do whatever it takes to keep themselves int he game and earning that cheque, including playing with injuries that they shouldn’t.
Very interesting perspective. The economics definitely factor into these matters.

Guesses
Hockey players are moving at a higher velocity, leading to a greater application of force at impact?
Football helmets are designed to deflect off each other, kind of like billiard balls, and create a glancing blow; hockey helmets are not?
Football helmets fit more snugly and are stouter protection?
Perception bias, i.e., the NFL recognized concussions as an issue some years ago and has taken steps to ameliorate the problem, while the NHL is just starting to look at the problem, and you see what you’re looking for?
Patron saint of quality footwear.
How many NHL concussions are actually caused by head-on-head blows too? I feel like most concussions come from head-on-“something more destructive than a head” blows (ie boards, ice, elbows, flying rubber saucers, etc).

Perception bias, i.e., the NFL recognized concussions as an issue some years ago and has taken steps to ameliorate the problem, while the NHL is just starting to look at the problem, and you see what you’re looking for?
There’s some truth to this, but don’t forget that the NFL has been glorifying concussion-causing (particularly head-on-head) hits for years. And that’s only been cut down on (it still happens from time to time) in the last year.
There’s definitely a lot of work to be done in both leagues.
Geeks of All Nations, Compile!
And even aside from bias, Crosby and Perron missed almost a full year. Pronger has been shut down for the rest of this year. Marc Savard. Who is the NFL player that has been inactive for the last 10 months from a concussion?
Please, call me F&B.
10 months is a tough cutoff, since the NFL season is only 17 weeks and missing half the season would only be about 2 months. But here’s a list of guys off the top of my head who either missed or are currently missing a significant amount of time after concussions:
Jahvid Best: Out for the year after a concussion in week 6 (Oct. 16th). He also had a nasty concussion his senior year of college and missed the rest of that season.
Kris Dielman: Out for the year after a scary concussion in week 7. He was visibly shaken up but kept playing before suffering a grand mal seizure on the plane ride home.
Austin Collie: Missed the last 8 games of 2010 due to multiple concussions. Tried to come back twice, had to leave the first time after getting dizzy and had to leave the second after getting hit and concussed again.
Clinton Portis: Missed the last half of the 2009 season after a concussion.

No, you’re right, but I saw the hit, too, and the aftermath. I’m sure Sidney Crosby and the Penguins staff thought he was fine, too. Based on what we’re seeing these days, sitting out an extra day or two isn’t the worst thing in the world.

As I mentioned yesterday, it’s the father/son trip for the Predators. OT: Dads are currently at the White House.
From MHH exclusive interview of Landeskog:
MHH: What’s the biggest difference between Sweden, Canada – the OHL- and now you’re here, what’s the biggest difference between all three?
Gabriel: Oh, I mean, it’s tough to compare, I mean it’s the OHL vs the NHL vs the Swedish Elite League. But I mean, the NHL is the best league in the world. You’re playing against so many good players, night in and night out. It’s a challenge. It’s a lot of fun. Last night we played against Ovechkin, which has been a dream come true for me. It’s, I mean, even though I’m playing for the Avalanche , and playing in the NHL, I’m still a little kid inside, you know. Still fulfilling my dreams every day. So, it’s a lot of fun. I mean, hockey-wise it is the best level you can play in and I’m very happy.
The rest of the interview is pretty interesting.

New content on the front page that might be a discussion-starter…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Things the Caps are doing well...
there are precious few but they are a top 10 team in some important areas:
*Goals per game
*Winning % when outshooting an opponent
*Faceoffs
*Home PP (their road PP is abominable 11.1%. Interesting: COL has a NHL best road PP = 29.8%, and a home PP of only 14.8% – that’s wack.)
If they could get some decent goaltending, outshoot teams more often, improve the fucking road PP and continue to win faceoffs, we might actually enjoy watching them again.
Home PP is only mediocre if you take away their 4-for-6 against the worst PK in the League.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Point taken. But as you pointed out in the AHI fancystats link, some key systemic strengths are there.
Goaltending will make or break the 2011-12 season, it seems.

Well, those are aggregate stats that don’t necessarily reflect the trend under DH32.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
But on the other hand, if you remove all the times they didn’t score, they’re clicking away at a 100% rate, far and away the best in the League!
Seriously, the PP blows, we all know that. But I don’t think you can remove a good night against a bad team and keep the competitions’ good nights in there.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
I didn’t mention word one about the competition. I do think you can remove one good night against a shite team from 15 games (or whatever) to get a truer sense of the team’s actual PP ability.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I read “only mediocre” as tacitly comparative to the other teams in the League. I was perhaps conflating that verbiage with your post yesterday in the Noon Number where you made the same observation with regard to TOR and noted that the PP sat at 17th in the League (or similar).
My point is that everyone’s numbers include the odd hot night on the PP. So even if you were speaking in an absolute sense, we’d have to remove everyone else’s hot nights in order to readjust the Leaguewide numbers.
If we’re throwing out high numbers, or low numbers, or any numbers, let’s do it for everyone and see what the new normal looks like.
I don’t feel very strongly about this issue so I’m not trying to start an argument here.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
I can’t believe I’m back in this back-and-forth.
My point: the Caps’ power-play is mediocre at home, despite one night on which it was superbly successful. Again, I fail to see how this is a controversial assertion.

His lack of risk with the Capitals can be traced right to his refusal or inability to part with GM George McPhee
Lack of risk??? Guy is probably the only owner to sign two different players to the largest contracts ever. He tore down this team heading into a lockout…if that’s not taking risk, I’m not sure what is.
Leonsis is a businessman first and foremost. And that is perfectly fine. I wouldn’t want to own a team that is constantly losing money. But hold this guy to the same accountability that Dan Snyder is slammed with.** Leonsis won’t risk anything until the team loses money.
Pretty sure the Caps and most other hockey teams lose money every year. The only financial reason to own a sports team (outside the NFL) is to hope for it’s value to appreciate, not for the income it generates year after year. Kind of like buying a house. It’s a money pit until you sell.
I like Jamie and valid arguements could be made that McPhee should have been gone long ago. But Ted is just about the epitome of what you would want in an owner. Jamie ignores facts like Ted’s willingness to spend the money to bring in players. He fails to mention Ted’s willingness to eat some of Jagr’s salary and ALL of Nylander’s salary for the greater good of the team.
He has his faults and ultimately his ownership will be judged by whether he wins or loses, but hard to argue against what he has done so far for this team.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

Pretty sure the Caps and most other hockey teams lose money every year.
Unless you’re going exclusively by the bottom line on their tax statements, I very much doubt this. To get an idea of how misleading that can be (for US teams, at least. I don’t have any idea about Canadian teams), consider that they can write off the whole team purchase price (over 15 years, IIRC), depreciate the value of player salaries (even though they don’t pay taxes on those salaries to begin with), paying large salaries to the owner, etc. If they’re S-corps (as I’ve heard some are), they can even have all profits go directly onto the owner’s return. Given all that, it’s amazing to me that any team would be unable to claim that they’re losing money. (And those are just schemes that I’ve heard about from various sources. I’m far from an expert, and wouldn’t be surprised if there are even more subtle ones.)
Geeks of All Nations, Compile!
Important to distinguish between cash flow and earnings. Would be interested to get a look at the cash flow statement.
One thing I would add is that that you can only depreciate player salaries that were on the books when you bought the team. So Ted is not allowed to depreciate Ovechkin’s and Backstrom’s salaries.
No doubt. I do know the books of several baseball teams (that had all been spending years complaining about losing money) were recently made public (I forget how; it was definitely not intended by the teams). And they were all showing profits.
And that gets to another reason why I don’t believe any significant number of teams are losing money consistently. Nobody would buy them (the few who’d be willing would go broke). The franchise values would not rise if they were losing money, so there’d be no pot of gold at the end (well, unless you’re Peter Angelos, and can get MLB to guarantee that you make money if you sell, regardless of the actual sale price).
Don’t forget that you won’t be able to get anyone to spend that much money without letting those people go over the books before the purchase is finalized.
Geeks of All Nations, Compile!
Well, to your point, franchise values do increase as there are only so many such franchises available. But obviously not always as we’ve seen in Phoenix, et al. There is no doubt that the number one reason to buy a sports franchise is not financial, it’s ego.

I’m talking cash flow. They spend more than they take in. I think for many teams the only way they can break even is if they make long playoff runs and bank the ticket revenue (concessions, TV money, etc) as they have no salary costs at that point. Of course, nobody really knows because they don’t exactly have open books.

WJC info: Nice that NHLN and USAHockey will continue to partner to show games on NHLN through 2018. As to this year, for US based viewers:
“NHL Network will provide exclusive live broadcasts and NHL.com will provide live streams of all U.S. National Junior Team games at the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship taking place Dec. 26 – Jan. 5 in Alberta, Canada. NHL Network will also televise all medal-round games and five additional preliminary-round match-ups, airing a total of 15 games in high definition.”

I don’t think it is a big deal since it’s just for warm-ups, but I did wonder when I heard about it. I know it’s been done for players retiring, but has it been done for 1000 games for any other players recently?
There are some differences with Knuble’s career and the guys earlier in their 30s hitting the mark but it did seem a bit over the top when I heard about it, but since it’s just for warm-ups, so not a big deal. I did wonder why they were doing the ceremony today before the game instead of the next home game since that game is against one of his former teams (NYR), but I assume that may have to do with the holidays.
Cynical reply: When someone can make money off of a jersey auction? Is this one profit or for a charity? It would be nice if the jersey auction would go to a charity of Knuble’s choice, but I didn’t see anything to indicate that was the case.
When the team is mired in mediocrity and sitting outside a playoff spot. When the team is set to play a game on Tuesday night before Christmas, the first night of Hannukah, in which the over/under on total goals scored is actually -1. That’s when.
And thank goodness it worked out. Alternative plan was to have Halpy light a big menorah at center ice.

Funny thing is with the giveaway and it being the only home game the week of a holiday with college kids home, etc., this was a very popular ticket before most knew this would be Knuble’s 1000.

Question- Never been to a giveaway game before, do they have enough for everyone? Or is it the first #### fans in attendance?
They usually announce if there’s a limited number (which usually falls in the 13,000 – 15,000 range). Haven’t heard any limitations this time. It’s being sponsored by Capital One (the same folks who gave out last year’s scarves) so they’ll probably have plenty.

Also, this will be a bit different than watching the Cassels 1000 game presentation, which was very odd so early in his so short Caps career.
I did find another team pulling off the warm-up jersey for a 1000th game ceremony… Alfredsson and Ottawa, including the C on the front of the jersey.
OT: for those who don’t know, assume many do, the traditional NHL gift is a silver stick…curious what Knuble’s teammates get him.
Well, the Caps seem to have modeled themselves after the mid-2000s Senators, so why not?
(Oh, because Knuble’s not the captain, hasn’t played more than a handful of his games here, etc…. but that was a rhetorical question.)

With the season he’s having, is Miller still the second best USA goalie? I know Quick’s not having a great year, either. Is that it? (Yes, I can look it up. No, I haven’t yet.)

Howard might be in the mix from time to time, as well.
Quick is too feast or famine for my liking, but Howard’s in a similar boat sometimes.
Thanks. I’m just literally brain-cramping on other US goalies. Lack of sleep doesn’t help.

A bit different circumstances, but yes born in the US; like Knuble was born in Canada, because of where their dads were working. And yes, there are other examples.
A funny story I was reading the other day that Jamie Oleksiak was using his US passport for travel to the WJCs.
I also read the other day that Jamie Oleksiak is a short-sighted bastard that better enjoy his time in the sun now because he’s just committed himself to not playing in meaningful international tournaments after he turns 20. Enjoy the World Championships, dickbag.

I know fans have discussed it, but I don’t recall seeing anything indicating that Kopitar ever considered it and given the rules, it would be very difficult for him to do so now.
He has played for Slovenia in IIHF tourneys and from what I recall reading/following has been very proud to do so.
If he did so now it would be for a non-IIHF event like the World Cup, for example the way Zubrus played for Russia at the World Cup in ’04 (non-IIHF event) but plays for Lithuania at IIHF tourneys.
...and none of them have ever done this

Peeters I think?
Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:
Leave me here, and when you want me, sound upon the bugle-horn
It's Pete
You can see the name as it zooms in.
Seems like Pete was a major feast or famine goalie for the Caps.
Under. I’m just hoping the guys get out there and have a good time at this point. American team that traps, full of forwards that have to score through effort rather than skill, two shutdown regular, run of the mill defensemen that are needed to shut down Ovechkin and a decent goalie. Recipe for disaster.
Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:
Leave me here, and when you want me, sound upon the bugle-horn
Leone on Eakin’s return to Hershey and Eakin on the coaching change and impact on players… ummm, I wish there were a few more Ws…
"The only thing that really affected, I think, the players really is just the new systems and stuff," Eakin said. "The players, obviously, go out and play and win hockey games."
So for the few who may recall my post yesterday about an agent tweeting (since erased I believe) about Feaster and players on waivers. This guy was venting publicly because I player on the CHL Quad City team was bumped as a result of trickle down moves in the higher leagues. Now the player (Brad Fogal) appears to be staying anyway for now, but interesting that the agent even in the short-term vented via twitter.
OT, but following up from yesterday. Still don’t understand the use of twitter for the vent.
