Regarding the Kornheiser thing, in context, he was already upset that his weekly interview with Wilbon got dumped out of on the live show because the station went live with a GMGM interview (it remained on the Podcast). He had already spent the first few minutes of the show excoriating the PD for doing that.
But even so, how clueless can you be about local sports? This was a GIANT story, and just because it didn’t involve the Redskins or the Wizards, it was still really important, locally and nationally. I think that trumps a standard Wilbon interview.

From time to time I see the same complaints here about these two bozos. I don’t understand why anyone here really gives a shit about how Korny and Wilbon do the Caps at all.

For me the Burnside article made me sick. He is still trying to compare the Caps of two years ago to the Pens, not the ones we currently have. I don’t know why I bother with ESPN anymore, the info here is much more useful delivered in actually a non-sensationalist way! It doesn’t help that Burnside is one of the biggest Pens/Crosby homers in existence. He could write an article solely about the hockey teams out west and get SOME reference to Crosby in there..somewhere.

From Puck Daddy:
“There’s a lot about that team that’s scary,” [Bylsma] said. “Today, especially in the second, the came at us hard, forechecked hard and were tough to handle that way. Very aggressive on the forecheck. That’s maybe something we hadn’t seen [before Dale Hunter].”
Maybe he’s blowing smoke, but that’s awfully encouraging to me. Then Hunter:
“They’re learning a new system. But we have to move the puck quicker out of our end. We spend too much time, and it wears out our offense,” said Hunter.
This fits nicely with the point I made in the Recap last night (first bullet, in fact):
The Caps had a better forecheck against the Penguins than they did against the Blues. Why? Because they were able to break out of their own zone better than on Tuesday night (though they certainly still need work in that aspect of the game). The result is that instead of going for line changes as soon as the puck comes to neutral, forwards could dump the puck in, chase it down and hammer Pittsburgh blueliners. Forechecking often starts in the defensive zone, and comparing these last two games provides some good examples of that… and reason for optimism.
So, to me, Dale Hunter comes in and it’s time for triage – deal with this stuff in order of severity. First up, then, is locking down the defense, which they seem to be on their way to doing. Next will be working on the breakouts (well, the PP needs fixin’, but I’m talking ES), which will lead to a better forecheck which will lead to more goals.
I think maybe I can see the vision…

He also apparently needs to work on not making stupid cross ice passes when there’s a defender ready to intercept.
You tried your best and failed miserably. The lesson is "Never Try."
How about working on un-defended D-to-D passes that start in the offensive zone and don’t end up at neutral?

There was something like 4 of those last night, right? I was surprised when Wideman did it – he’s generally a sharp passer.
Failure is always an option.
I think the D-man receiving the pass has to do a better job of being somewhat across the blueline as well to receive the pass. Give the point man a better target to pass to…
Wideman had at least 2 other breakout passes that were behind guys in neutral that either led to a turnover or us needing to reset. He misses more than he should.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

Without fail (or with a shitload of fail?) the few times the Caps got set up in the offensive zone in the 3rd last night their pressure was killed by terrible D to D passes. So infuriating.

I think there is something there that may be part of learning Hunter’s system. Wideman’s passes that went out of the zone to go across to the point looked like passes that would be perfect set ups for the receiving point man to come across to the center of the rink and blast the puck down the slot. To me, from upstairs, it looked like that was what Wideman was expecting. If they do that occasionally, it would force the wing back a little closer to the net, giving the points more room to maneuver.

Agreed. And the second goal last night was a backbreaker (as was the third goal against BUF after Chimmer had halved the lead). That said, if Vokoun/Neuvirth give up two goals a game, regardless of how ugly, the team should be able to win on most nights.

I think the plan going into the season was to practice a grittier, grindier style in anticipation of the playoffs. It’s gone completely pear-shaped now, but the idea I think remains valid.
I also have 100% complete faith that they won’t stay in 10th for long.
I get that it was a ton of fun to root for a team that regularly shot the lights out and was a ton of fun to watch. But I also get that something had to change for this team.

It wasn’t fun to watch in the playoffs. If they figure out how to take shots on goal again (you know, accurate shots on goal), the sorta game they played last night would win them playoff games. They need that effort every night though…not just against the Pens.

In the last few seasons, we all made a case that things only mattered in the spring, but what was left unsaid was that we knew they’d be good over the course of the regular season. Two 50-win in three seasons attests to that.
Well, they’re not very good now, but they can be in the spring. This year’s Caps might be that team that finishes 6-7-8 in the East but is the proverbial team that “no one wants to face” in the playoffs. But here’s the catch. Since the NHL went to a six-division format in 1998-1999, no team has won the Cup finishing lower than fourth in the regular season in their conference, and that has been done only twice by fourth-place finishers (Pittsburgh in 2009, New Jersey in 2000).
Winning the conference isn’t the be-all and end-all of getting to a Cup (as we have discovered in painful fashion), but winning a division has its charms.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Luckily for the Caps, they play in the Southeast.

I was glad to see some attempts to dump and chase, use their size to try and create a cycle. Problem was that most of the dump ins ended up behind the net where Fleury deftly handled most of the pucks. Pens dmen did a good job of retrieving said puck. Seems like some hard arounds or dump ins down the slot might have been a good idea to mix things up a bit.
BTW, did Knuble play on every line at some point last night?
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
BTW, did Knuble play on every line at some point last night?
Seemed that way. His first (?) trip up back to the first line around the 9:00 min mark of the first period ending up with terrific forechecking and 3 close-in SOGs (2 by Knuble, one by Ovi). The chemistry between the three still seems to be working and I just don’t understand why they aren’t left together for more than a couple of shifts a game.

where Fleury deftly handled most of the pucks
I hate that this can be said without an ounce of sarcasm. Dude’s an adventure at times, I was hoping for one or two flubs last night.
The definition of being a Caps fan is watching the same team over and over and expecting different results.
Seemed like he was able to stop every one and leave it/pass it to the dman. Vokes seemed to let every one hop over his stick.
Could be selective memory, but it seems like a lot of the Pens dump ins came from their left wing side, i.e. from Vokes right to left. Given that Vokes holds his stick in his left hand, I’m wondering if that was purposeful because it would be harder for him to handle the puck. Maybe it’s just that he’s not good stick handler.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
I dunno, I thought Chimera’s goal was soft. But it was the only goal, so not much solace there.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
From where we were sitting it looked like a nifty backhander, but admittedly it was at the other side of the rink.
But I’m really referring to his puckhandling skills. He can be really good, as we saw last night…or he can do what he did at the Winter Classic. Twice.
The definition of being a Caps fan is watching the same team over and over and expecting different results.
Oh, certainly. Sure, it looked nifty, but that goal scored against Vokes or Neuvy and everyone’s saying he should have had it. It’s a fine line sometimes.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Dunno. That was more of a defensive failure than one the goalie should have stopped.

I think it was a nice backhand top shelf…the fault lies mostly with Orpik.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 2, 2011 6:30 PM EST up reply actions
I think Orpik had to respect the pass as Ward was rolling down the middle (Sid?). He played the percentages that Chimmer wouldn’t be able to sneak one over Fleury’s shoulder vs overcommitting to him and allowing a layup pass to Ward.
Similar to a recent two on one against Sarge (can’t remember the game) where he had to commit to the puck carrier lest he allow another guy to roll straight down the slot. I’d say thats 50% great shot by Chimmer and 50% bad position on Fleury.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
He got caught peeking at Ward, who was in a position to receive a pass from Chimera. No one is going to be expecting Chimera to flip a backhand from there, let alone pick top shelf, far side.
If you've read this far...seek help.
But Ward had another Pens player on him and Orpik’s stick wasn’t even in good position to stop a pass to Ward. Pretty terrible defensive play.
Release the Mackan!
by Killer_Carlson on Dec 2, 2011 3:45 PM EST up reply actions
Maybe trailing, but it was definitely a 2 on 1 there. I think Orpik got stuck between and in that spot Chimera made the smart play. There wasn’t a lot of space between everyone, so unless Orpik really moved to cut him off, the pass wouldn’t have been the best option just because of the low chance of it actually getting through.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 2, 2011 6:31 PM EST up reply actions
The Pens player was behind Ward, but he was close enough to tie up his stick. But I think we are on the same side, I thought it was a very poor play by Orpik.
Release the Mackan!
by Killer_Carlson on Dec 2, 2011 6:34 PM EST up reply actions
I guess I just though if it was possible to slide a pass through (given how close they were I feel like it would be a low chance it gets through in a way Ward can get off a quality shot) Ward would be clear enough from the trailing player.
Either way agree completely Orpik basically covered neither guy and let Chimera just walk right in. Maybe Fleury could play it better, but seemed a real nice finish from that spot.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

Ah D’oh, you consummate kidder. Everyone remembers what a huge ALW fiend you are. We all remember that GDT two or three years ago when you led us all in adapting the entire score of Cats for the team. "Jellicle Caps come out tonight/Jellicle Caps come on come all/The stadium lights are shining bright/Let’s see tonight they’ll show some balls." What did we call it? "Old Pothier’s Book of Practical Caps"? Good times.

There were parts of last night’s game where I was just floored with excitement. Not for the game going on, but for what I was seeing, and what I hoped would come. Yeah.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
I’m repeating myself from the recap thread, but institutional culture changes, where they involve changing to a more rigorous standard, take time. Just the nature of the beast, and that’s what the Caps are doing.
Institutional culture changes that involve going to a looser standard, e.g., an avuncular bald guy trundles in and says boys, forget about the details, just get out there and play hard, those take no time at all.
Agree with the triage metaphor. Basically the same strategy as acquiring or merging a business.
Anyway, it’s going to be ugly for a while, but I’m preaching patience.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
The last two games really illustrate how badly the Capitals deteriorated under Boudreau. What we’re seeing now is step one of a long road to recovery. It’s pretty hard to believe how far this team fell.
Agree that they lost their way and are now a broken team. Mending them will be a big effort.
I’ll also note that Pitt is probably the hardest team to play against in the East, and STL is currently going so well that they’re maybe the hardest team to play against in the League.
These guys need a little shot of confidence from beating up a weak sister.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
I think the last two games have illustrated how executing your team’s system elevates your game and stymies your opponent.
Pittsburgh’s forwards have been in that forechecking system for so long, it’s like they know how to disrupt any play in the offensive zone. If a Caps forward had it on the half wall, a Penguin forechecker was usually on him in 1-3 seconds to lay the hit and jostle the puck free.
Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!
Losses won’t bother me as long as I see some gradual improvement every week but I also remember how inconsistent the Flyers were when Laviolette took over and they had a solid roster with lots of C depth, experienced D, etc. Their only weakness was their goaltending (Leighton, Emery, and Boucher):
Flyers W/L
Dec: 6-8
Jan: 8-6
Feb: 5-2
March: 6-10
April: 3-3
I’m glad the Caps don’t face the Bruins until late in the season this year. It should be interesting to see how the measure up to the best team in hockey in a couple of months. Other measuring stick games would be the ones against San Jose and LA. The Caps had very little success against those two teams in the past couple of years and also because they are road games and the Caps have been awful on the road this year. I also think some roster changes will be needed eventually. The Caps second line right now is useless.
Lobbies: Green, Carlson, Orlov
I think the Pens might be better than the B’s, but I take your point.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
The Pens are good but the Bruins are just a scary, scary team right now. They have it all, offense, defense, goaltending. Bruins, Pens, Red Wings, Rangers are the best teams right now IMO. Wild and Blues are also having a lot of success this season but they are sort of like the Predators. Great D but very little offense. I’m not sure how successful they’re going to be in the playoffs if they make it.

I disagree…Bruins clicking on all cylinders. And a team that is that dominant 5×5 AND has great goaltending is hard to beat…
I think they’re definitely better than last year’s team, but I think I’d still take Pittsburgh over Boston, just because Pittsburgh is the class of the East at 5v5 (since I don’t think Boston can actually shoot over 10% at 5v5 long-term…over the last five years only Washington and Pittsburgh have topped 10%, and each only once).

It still has the strongest relationship to winning.
PPs a wash, PK slight edge Pittsburgh, goaltending obviously edge Boston but Fleury seems to have turned a corner and with Thomas’ age I’m not sure that gap there is all big.
No question Boston is clicking on all cylinders, but I’m much more encouraged by a team accumulating good numbers largely without their best player over the course of a season rather than in 15 games.

The Caps just gave up 2 goals to one of hockey’s hottest teams, and then 2 goals (on brainfarts, not on system breakdowns) to the best team in hockey — a team with extraordinarily dangerous weapons.
I think the defense triage is working out OK. And the brainfarts will slow down as the system becomes second nature and as folks get healthy.

Part of that better breakout is going to come with the defenders making a better (i.e., fast and tape-to-tape) first pass. A lot of those initial passes ended up in either the board winger’s skates or just not in a place where the winger can make a play. At the height of their powers, the Caps were regularly making that first pass, and the wingers on the boards were either bump-setting it out to the center or back to a defenseman in a flee-flicker-like sort of play.
Crisp execution is so important, and that’s what seems to be missing from the Caps right now. They need a few days off in a row and a couple of good practices really badly right now.

After 4 years of BB, this whole “work in progress” theme running through a lot of the chatter is something I never expected to see in the Ovechkin era. It’s quite the bummer. But on the positive side of things is I think the players we have will make the transition to Hunter mode easier.

with any new coach there is a sense of “starting over.” The Pens “started over” a lot later in the 2008-2009 season and won a Stanley Cup. The thing being in this case, it’s not how they’re playing now, which is pretty much suck on toast, but how they are playing in February, March, April, and beyond when they will presumably have mastered this approach.

For some reason, this cheers me up…
Most frustrating for Crosby: Getting dominated in the faceoff circle to the tune of 6-for-22, losing 12 draws to Brooks Laich(notes).“I gotta be better there obviously, but for some reason we were taking them all on his strong side. I gotta get better on my forehand side. I’d say 75-percent were on his backhand, on his strong side,” said Crosby. “It made a tough night a little bit tougher when you’re trying to win draws.”

So do we credit Dale for realizing that weakness in Sid’s faceoff game and putting Laich out there for what seemed like every draw against him? They never do. It is a convenient thing to think of them as this offensive juggernaut with the likes of Crosby and Malkin, but in fact they are not. They are sixth in scoring this year (the Caps are eighth), but even when Crosby scored 51 goals they finished fifth, and when Malkin had his 113-point season they finished sixth. The guts of that team is everything else; they play hard up and down the roster consistently. No one gets more out of the undercard lines and pairs on his team than Dan Bylsma. Thinking ahead, with the realization that forecasting records is folly and using New Year’s Day as an artificial marker, I’m going to boldly present a wild ass guess that the balance of December’s sched will result in a 7-6 record (with an upward trend toward the last week). Using insights Aldous Huxley would envy, my method falls somewhere between a dart toss and quantum physics. Any record North of that I would consider gravy; much below that number would be a bit disheartening.

It’s time to step back and take a more critical look at Ovechkin’s production. In his last 103 games covering last season and this one to date he is 40-63-103, plus-18. That works out to a per-82 game pace of 32-50-82, plus-14 pace. In his last 82 games he is 30-47-77, plus-14. That’s not bad, by any means, but in terms of how guys finished last year, it’s pretty much Loui Eriksson (27-46-73, plus-10 in 79 games).
It isn’t outside the realm of possibility that this is who Ovechkin is and will be. The problem he has is context — all those 50-plus goal seasons before he was 25. It’s not necessarily “what’s wrong” with Ovechkin (although it could be), it’s “holy crap, was he good a few years ago.”

And this gets back to the larger issue one more time. It’s not “Ovechkin.” That was the easy part, the rattle of a ping pong ball. It is what the Caps did to build a team around him. Take Ovechkin off the roster and Crosby off his, then compare the teams. Which one do you like? Part of it is the luck (or cagey use of losing games) that the Penguins had four top-five picks in a row to stock its team, but so much of it is what they get from other guys on the roster. Now we’re going to see just how valuable that vaunted organ-eye-zation is in terms of developing people at Hershey and drafting talent from Europe to move into the lineup (like Marcus Johansson or, perhaps, Evgeny Kuznetsov).

Looking at the video this morning, it looked like they were both turning simultaneously with the hit. 74 had been leaning away from Cooke as they were turning, so his right foot (closest to Cooke) wasn’t on the ice just before and when they made contact. 74 had also pulled his hands into his body while he was leaning away.

On the first point, it’s not lateral/blindside and Carlson has no history, so I don’t think it gets supplementary discipline. But I do think it was a missed call, in-game. Also, if the League wants to give him one or two games and start applying that across-the-board for similar hits, I’m fine with it.

I think they’re different. 87’s shot on Foligno was an elbow to the face in a “protect-your-goalie” crease scrum. It wasn’t hat bad. Carlson’s was a direct, mid-action check, where he did get his elbow up.

Looking at the replay, I’m wondering if the NHL will say the reason for no discipline is Cooke moving just before the hit. It looks like he might have tried to stop/slow and thus lowered his head a bit. It would be the same reason a headshot on Eakin recently wasn’t punished.
Failure is always an option.
It’s just a basic elbow to the head. It should have been a minor penalty, no more.

It looked a little like the Steckel “hit” to me. The puck goes right in front of him, Carlson is trying to get up ice at the very end of the game and Cooke appears in front of him. There’s nothing pre-meditated or malicious and if Cooke is Carlson’s height it’s just a little collision.

Right, but there is a discretion of the ref on intent to purposely injure. In a head on collision like last night’s, it looks far more like Carlson is bringing his arm up as extra defense for the hit, rather than looking to actively hit Cooke in the head. Still a penalty, but not something you’d look at beyond that.

Right after the game (I watched it on the NHL Network) Button said something really prescient (and which has been talked about here): They won 70% of the faceoffs (meaning they controlled the puck to start play significantly more than the Pens) but only got 15 shots on goal. Which means that their puck control just never lasted long enough to get much offense going.
It also means that (since someone posted the stat that a vast majority of faceoffs happened in the Caps’ end) they were unable to break through the neutral zone with regularity.

I know this system change is going to take a while to implement, but we still have games to play. I just don’t quite understand why if GMGM was going to fire Bruce, it was not done last May. I mean honestly, what was going to change from May until now. t would have at least given Dale, or whoever, some time to be at training camp, watch players, and make the system work, and not have to be losing games all while trying to get it together.

Joel Ward for Matt Bradley is an upgrade. Jeff Halpern ought to provide more secondary scoring than Boyd Gordon. Roman Hamrlik ought to be better on the breakout than Scott Hannan. (Well, he ought to…)
There were in-person meetings at airports to convince the stars to buy in. I don’t think it was crazy to give Boudreau another shot. He is a very good coach.
And the timing of the firing is good for the team in another way. They saw that Boudreau was given every chance. Someone they liked is gone because of their own failings. Ought to make them more humble and coachable. Ought to.

Let’s talk about Alex Semin. I don’t want to pick on the guy. That would be piling on at this point. I’m genuinely concerned that this is well beyond just a Sasha Slump.
Five points in his last 18 games. One assist in the last month. Folks, I don’t think he’s ever looked this lost. The worst part to me is that he never even seems to have the puck.
Everyone talks about how important it is to get Ovie going but right now the second line brings nothing to the table, and that’s just as big of an issue. Part of it undoubtebly falls on Sasha, but part of it undoubtedbly falls on his linemates too, and I think the 2nd line needs to be broken up yesterday. They’re a puck possession black hole.
Something needs to be done, now. Move him to the top line. Give him more ice time. Press some buttons. Something, anything to get him going.

Put Knuble on the top line and Brouwer on the second line………
Semin is what he is, a very talented mentally fragile player….interesting to see Vogs say that in hindsight team would have been better off keeping Flash and trading Semin.

Seriously. Just because Flash is having a good year playing top-line minutes doesn’t mean he would have a decent year in Washington (where he would most likely not get those minutes).

So Semin’s upside is 25% higher at a ~50% higher salary?
Of course, there’s value in Semin’s expiring contract.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
There’s also an argument to be made for salary valuation to outpace production at the high end because the pool of elite talent is far smaller than the pool of pretty good talent. I’d take Semin and his contract over Flash and his every day of the week.
That’s not really the whole question though, because we’re talking about trade return one year ago. I think I’d still sell Flash.

Semin needs a grinder on his line – either Knuble or Brouwer. There is no one on that line to win the battles along the board. Johansson and Semin are both great in open space, but Eakin is holding that line back. They need someone to do the dirty work and help keep possession.
Failure is always an option.
Fun Fact: Alex Semin played 0 seconds with only three players last night: Joel Ward, Mike Knuble, and Troy Brouwer.
He played .1 minute with Nick Backstrom.
If this keeps up, he’s going to have to get Johansson and Eakin going himself, or he’s going to be totally marginalized.

To be fair, Johannson helped set up 2 plays last night that could have resulted in goals if Semin and Eakin don’t flub their shots. But I agree on the main point, Johannson and Semin’s roles make sense on that line, Eakin isn’t bringing anything to the table at the moment. He needs to see time in Hershey.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

EAKIN is infuriating. He’ll be good in a couple of years, but dear god…back to Hershey with you, youngster.
The good news is he was the fourth man on the second line in practice today (which also featured a certain #22, huzzah!!) so maybe that’s a sign he’ll be spending the next game in the pressbox. Or on a bus.

Let’s play a mind game…imagine Alexander Semin on the Penguins, playing for Dan Bylsma. Imagine him playing for St. Louis under Ken Hitchcock, even in Tampa under Guy Boucher or in New York under John Tortorella (ok, that would be entertaining). How long does he last?
I’m not seeing a player who colors inside the lines here, one who does well with structure.
If you've read this far...seek help.
I agree that it doesn’t bode well for his future under Dale Hunter but it’s not as if Boudreau’s system this year was all structure and discipline. I think the primary issue is that his linemates are inadequate.
Boudreau’s this year was of a different kind. The “structure” was in results, good and bad. “Structure” isn’t always a system, it is discipline. Semin, whether one adheres to the “reputation” theme or not, was taking penalties at a one-per-game pace for a while. He paid with reduced minutes/benching. For some it might be a message that is taken to heart as a form of inspiration, but in Semin it seems only to have dulled his game. That’s not an indictment of Semin or his character; different players have different makeups.
If you've read this far...seek help.
I think the primary issue is that his linemates are inadequate.
One part this. One part bad puck luck. One part him just not playing well. One thing’s for sure, if Semin is traded, there is no second line unless the team receives a skilled starter in return. Picks/prospects won’t do it, unless this year is a write-off.
Yeah can’t imagine they would, although I don’t think it’s because of their over the hill free agent bust.

When the whole team went south, he wasn’t doing much to help. He seems to have recovered his confidence in the last two games, but he’s also letting in one softie a game. Sure, you ought to be able to win a game where your goalie only gives up two goals. Go figure we’d worry about offense.

Root Sports...what a joke
So last night while i was watching the game on Root sports, i know right…, they kept showing clips of Hunter running people, taking liberties on players, and leaving his feet when making hits. Bob Errey even mentioned at one point, “Look at him leave his feet, that is just wreckless.” Then about ten minutes later when Stall got called for that charging penalty, he seemed baffled at how that was a charging penalty, when Stall clearly left his feet to hit Semin. I still don’t quite understand how i live 4 hours from Pittsburgh and am still considered in the “local” market. SMH…

Dale Hunter was a bastard to play against. You know it, I know it, and Steggy and Errey know it. He didn’t earn that reputation with tact and diplomacy. I’ll repeat myself: this Caps team would be a better team if they weren’t as accommodating to the opposition’s feelings.

What pissed me off this morning
The place I sometimes go for breakfast gives away free copies of the Toronto Star to its patrons. I notice that the front page of the Sports section is devoted to the Caps game. But of course it’s written by sports journalism tool Damien Cox. When you headline a column “Hunter’s Caps Kill the Fun”, you basically know what to expect, especially with Cox writing. Basically Cox writes an elegy to the run & gun Caps of old who made the NHL fun, disregarding the fact that Cox would regularly take shots and poke holes in the Caps game when they were more freewheeling. The online version of the article changes the headline to “The Greatest Show on Earth Bids Farewell”. I guess I should give a link but I hate giving this guy page hit but here you go, if you want to be annoyed.
I read that last night. Drives me insane – mostly because I’d bet money that Cox was one of the many voices saying that the Caps couldn’t play the kind of free-wheeling, run-and-gun hockey they did when Bruce first came in. Analysts, “experts”, fans of other teams, EVERYONE was saying that yes, it was entertaining, but dear god it’s so horrific that you’ll never win a playoff game.
A few playoff exits and a slumping offense later, the Caps decide to change things up and focus more on GASP defense, and suddenly those same damn people are wringing their hands saying “but now they’re not entertaining anymore! I want to be entertained, dammit! DANCE PUPPETS DANCE (even if it makes you lose).”
…grr.

Didn’t see it but no surprise; Dale Hunter has never looked comfortable giving an interview. Very shy, not a fan of giving interviews, etc.
Bob McKenzie alluded to that when he tweeted on the day of Hunter’s hiring:
The way I see it, only part of job Dale Hunter will struggle with is having to deal with media on a daily basis. Not his favorite thing
Didn’t someone else mention on twitter that the people happiest with Hunter leaving town were those in the London media?

It’s one of the reasons Jim Johnson was just brought in.
Personally, I’d almost like to see Johnson be the designated spokesperson from the team. Everyone would be happier, including the press.

I post prospect updates in posts and on other boards from time to time and had a WJC post here last year, but EmilyB has done most of the prospect updates here. I’ve been thinking about pulling one together with another month in the books; maybe EmilyB and I will do one together?
In terms of SC, Grubauer is playing well in goal and receiving a lot of praise.
EmilyB posts updates about Kuznestov in the fanshots, as well.
Some other quick updates:
Two other prospects: Patrick Wey, D at BC and Stan Galiev, F, Saint John in the Q are both out with injuries.
Caleb Herbert is having a solid start to his freshman season at UMD.
Sam Carrier is playing well on D for Baie-Comeau and was recently named 3rd star of the week in the Q for last week.
I posted a non-update on Soberg in yesterday’s clips.

AHL the way Orlov did last year; I doubt it and I am not expecting it to happen given the player we are discussing. I’d expect he finishes out the year in the KHL and then perhaps would play for Russia at the World Championships.
Until there’s a signed ELC and he comes over, I am not ready to say he’s definitely coming over next year given the way he’s being woo’d to stay in Russia (from what I read/hear) and continue playing in the KHL, although obviously I hope he signs his ELC and comes over.
One thing from last night, which I’m sure was discussed, was the number of Pens fans in attendance. I can’t remember the last time there was that many of them. I’m wondering if the combination of the team’s play and the rapid rise in STH cost has finally hit the level where more people used this game as an opportunity to recover megabucks against their expenses. I’m thinking about dropping a line to to my rep about it, because I already don’t like what I know it’s going to cost me next season.

"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
I think we assume they are getting them from STH but since many of them live here, it’s not easy to tell who is buying the tickets. It’s hard for STHs to control that. Now, if people buy paper tickets and STH knowingly ignore the PA address, then they are responsible for Pens fans there.
by jopierce on Dec 2, 2011 11:00 AM EST via iPhone app up reply actions
I’m not blaming anyone, just offerring an observation. If you put your tickets on stubhub or the Caps’ ticketexchange, you have no control over who buys it. You know that the team tries to bundle Pens/Flyers/Rangers tickets in packages to prevent out of towners from buying them up in single game purchases. You’re always going to have some fans from the other team, but for example, the Rangers game last Friday was much quieter.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
I bought mine (for both games) from a Caps’ STH in Rockville who couldn’t attend either game. Listed them on Craigslist for below face ($75 each, $85 face). Still not sure how that happened, but I’m not complaining.
And yes, it seemed like all of Section 420 were Pens fans who bought tix from STH’s (according to my informal poll). Seemed similar to a Skins/Eagles game.

I can’t really begrudge people selling their tickets to out-of-towners anymore… Tickets have gone up so much in the past two years you gotta do what you gotta do. My dad had to give our mini-plan up last year because of it.
by Murshawursha on Dec 2, 2011 12:03 PM EST up reply actions
It’s inconvenient, but if STHs won’t take the extra step to sell in person or verify they are only selling to Caps fans, inevitably they’ll be giving tickets to the opposition.

And if the opposition’s willing to pay top dollar, well, you gotta do what you gotta do.
I agree it’s a less-than-ideal situation, but the economy sucks and the price of tickets is only rising. Obviously given the choice between selling to Caps fans and opposition fans, of course you choose the Caps fans.

Stubhub was money for the past two seasons, but so inconsistent this year. Couldn’t sell seats in 116 for Pens at $140 per, but sold Winnipeg for $130 and Ottawa tomorrow for $110. I’ve got triples which can present challenges trying to resell, but this whole season has been strange on the secondary market.
The Pens one for me was $160 per, the dude who wanted the Blues seats paid face. Another presumably less desirable option is donation, which I think if they go back to MSE you get face for (or at least that’s the case for some of the midweek DCU games I donate mine to), but I dig the writeoff.

The Winnipeg game was because of the date/holiday week, kids home from college, kids off of school, people in from out of town.
From talking to people and observing so far this season, the Shub vs exchange vs other, between the pricing levels by game, the variable pricing stuff, the change in the exchange policy but people not looking there as much because of the rules before this season to the escalating STH and face value prices, plenty of things impacting the market and when or where to sell.
Sure Pens games sell, but between the number of home games, the Thursday game date, the upheaval this week and the increased value people expect for a Pens game, I was not surprised to see Pens fans or to hear that some people didn’t get as much as they expected trying to re-sell tickets.
Honestly, to me It didn’t seem like any more than usually show up for a weekday Pens game.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
I took a buddy of mine from Pittsburgh and we both thought it was the quietest game either of us have seen in Verizon. Even Unleash the Fury didn’t have the landing it usually does. There were quite a few empty seats and the energy just didn’t seem to be there in the crowd. I was actually impressed the Caps were as physical as they were because usually they feed off the crowd more than they should have to.

Do not stray from the narrative.... Do not stray from the narrative...
Watching the NHL network following the game was horrendous, in particular Craig Button. I doubt he actually watched the game, but instead looked at the stats and saw the shots were lopsided in favor of the Penguins. How about scoring chances? I haven’t looked them up but I’d wager they were a lot closer together. The Capitals dominated/were-very-competitive 2.5 periods of the game. They were finishing checks, they were forechecking well, they were backchecking and hustling like I’ve never seen before. Was it Hunter? Or was it the Penguins? Who knows, either way they were doing the right things which was very encouraging. If they keep that level of effort, the goals will come. I could have done with some more crashing of the net, but that’s my only real gripe.

I don’t even like Craig Button. The Caps were amped up in the first, the Pens controlled the majority of the puck possession, and I thought they were chasing hits. Just an opinion on the first period.
I would’ve liked to see the same intensity out of the Pens that the Caps showed in the first period.
Yeah, they were chasing hits in the first. That helped lead to the first goal, if I recall, when the top line all tried to hit someone and were so far up ice that the Pens got numbers going the other way.

At least, now, I’m cautiously optimistic that the problems like more with those final two steps—getting the puck in a scoring area, and scoring, rather than simple preliminary steps like getting the puck and entering the offensive zone.

I get that…but at one point I saw Laich pull up before hitting him. When even guys like Laich are avoiding a hit, it’s not good (and to be fair I think he had hit him earlier, so maybe he was just trying not to get out of position). The guy’s been cleared. He says he’s 100%. He thus assumes the risk of potentially getting reinjured; as long as the hit is clean, guys shouldn’t shy away from it – regardless of whatever shitstorm ensues in Canada.

I have no idea how they could say there is ‘nothing to it’. Carlson extended his arms out and nailed Cooke right in the skull. That hit is the very definition of what the league claims to be trying to eliminate.

But I’m really for getting Brower to the 2nd line, Knuble on the top, and this guy back on the forth with Halpy and Hendricks.

Hamrlik yes, but isn’t Poti’s only hurting Ted’s checkbook right now?
by Murshawursha on Dec 2, 2011 12:27 PM EST up reply actions
Mostly, but not completely. Poti being on LTIR prevents the Caps from banking cap space and limits what they can do later in the season (though Green could end up on LTIR, etc., and provide that same issue).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Poti’s contract is probably being paid by insurance. Hockey players have long-term disability insurance like most folks, only theirs probably has much higher premiums.
Occasionally reporting from Section 421 of the Verizon Center...
by MikeL-Pivonka on Dec 2, 2011 4:02 PM EST up reply actions
The LT disability policies for athletes that I’ve seen basically pay a lump sum for a career-ending injury. Remember, NHL contracts are guaranteed, so Poti’s getting paid. It’s the team that probably insures the contract so that they don’t have to pay for a player who’s injured.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."

I’ve ranted about this before, but for me it essentially comes down to the fact that he can’t help get the puck out of our zone while he’s sitting in the trainer’s room with ice on whatever body part he’s managed to injure this month.
Probably should give it a little more time before I pass judgement, but at this point he’s really starting to look like the Rick DiPietro of defensemen to me.

Too early, imo. Brent Burns had a couple of lost seasons for Minn. But now that’s he’s healthy, he’s one of the best again.
Yeah, but with all the fuss about our closing window to win, do we have time for a couple of lost seasons?
I dunno. I’m not saying unload him for the sake of unloading him, but if the right deal came along I’d totally be on board with pulling the trigger. And seeing as I have the man crush to end all man crushes on Iginla, I’d be all over that.
GMGM would have to be off his rocker to do Green for Iggy. One of the best defensemen in the league, in his prime, for an aging RW who’s owned 7 million next year? Absolutely terrible trade for the Caps.

Look, I understand the rationale for trading Green, even if I disagree with it, by why Iginla? He’s on pace for 40-50 points this season, and at 34 his numbers are likely to continue to trend downward. Green, injuries or no, would fetch a much bigger return than an aging power forward.

"Now wait a minute. This is just purely a social call. You know, just two adults getting a stew on, man."
by The Ghost of Bebop on Dec 2, 2011 1:56 PM EST up reply actions
why Iginla?
Because he’s consistently put up 30 goals and >70 points without a whole lot of high-end talent surrounding him. Because I think he’d be scary on a line with OV. Because he plays with a snarl I think this team could use more of. Because by all indications he’s an incredible leader and a great ambassador for the game. Because he’s played (and fought) in the Cup finals. And because of this.
oops: for just the reason stated...
He’s too old. The glass man is in his prime—supposedly; Iginla is not. Sadly, the Caps are too thin defensively—as they ALWAYS seem to be—to trade Green. If we had some defensive depth, I would certainly try to get him healthy and then deal him for another good player who doesn’t spend two weeks in rehab every time he gets a hangnail.
You think we get 65 out of Green? I wish.

The thing is, Mike Green 60% of the time is more valuable than a good power forward 100% of the time. This team is much better with Green in the lineup and we see this every time he gets injured, which, admittedly, is more frequently than anyone would like. Unless this team shows it can win without Green, he shouldn’t be traded.
"Oh, so that's what you're gonna do."
by Rainbow, Kitty, Beer on Dec 2, 2011 1:21 PM EST up reply actions
Yea, but you are not factoring in who we might...
get back for Green—a good player who is DURABLE. Green has skills—but I rate him as one of the most overrated players in the league, partly because
he’s soft and always injured. He’s also been mostly bad in the playoffs, which is why i don’t get all the love for him. He was terrible in the pittsburgh series, as I recall, and lousy against Montreal. Last year he wasn’t bad but didn’t really do a whole lot positive either.
i’m not sure i categorize green as “soft.” oft-injured, obviously, but he plays a tougher game than people give him credit for.
One of my fondest memories of childhood was sitting with my father, watching Dale Hunter pound another players face into the ice.
Yeah, blocking shots with your head doesn’t strike me as soft. I’d say his problem is more often going for the counterhit or pin instead of playing the puck instead of shying away from the corners.
As for the playoffs, he was great against Philly, banged up in 2009 (when BB was for some reason content to leave him out against Crosby again and again), poor in 2010 (though I don’t think as much as he’s criticized for) and was really good against NYR in 2011, at least (check out the scoring chance plus minus per 15 table…only Backstrom and Hannan were better).

Very interesting article on leadership by Sally Jenkins, that references Boudreau, Edsall and Tebow.
Money quote. Think about Boudreau this year as you read this paragraph:
According to Hogan’s research, followers want four things: integrity, confidence, decision-making and clarity. But just as important is what followers don’t want: irritability, moodiness, untrustworthiness, indecisiveness, needless micro-management and excessive authority. They perceive these things as incompetent, and pretty soon the leveling mechanism kicks in and there is a subtle rebellion.

Seems like in many sports, coaches who are emotional don’t last long. Think of Ditka, Buddy Ryan, and Mike Keenan. High emotion guys who can have success in the short run but not sustained.
Then think of Joe Gibbs, Tom Landry, Belichick. Guys who’s demeanor and temper (at least publically) are more even keeled and consistent. Guys who had long term success.
Seems like Hunts is more of the even keeled type behind the bench, as opposed to his on ice persona. Maybe working with kids who are more likely to feed off/respond to his emotions (both postive and negative) has led him to be that way.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
Agreed on your examples. Phil Jackson, Scotty Bowman, also fit well.
But , with all these coaches, think Jackson, Landry, Belichek, you know there is a nasty side there you don’t want to see – EVER.

late to the party, I thought the Captain played well. A couple of questions tho…on one of his shifts where he was flying around laying the lumber did any one see him pull up instead of hitting 87 and skate by him….also on his shift where he applied some awesome back pressure…is it just me or was that like a 3 or 4 line shift…seemed like he was out forever and was winded afterwards

In a similar vein
From the Globe and Mail.
Since the 2007 draft, which yielded Max Pacioretty (whose suspension has enabled Leblanc’s call-up), P.K. Subban(notes), Yannick Weber(notes) and Ryan McDonough (now of the Rangers), the Habs have had precisely zero of their own draft picks play even a single NHL game.
Not good.
True, the Habs have a veteran group and are usually a playoff team, but they’ve drafted 25 players since picking Minnesota high-school player Scott Kishel 192nd in 2007 (Kishel is in his fourth year at Minnesota-Duluth). Only four of those guys (Leblanc, Gabriel Dumont(notes), Joonas Nattinen(notes) and Alex Avtsin) have even played a game in the AHL.
Ouch.
I’m not ready to say ouch before seeing how this looks for other teams, especially non-lottery teams as that only references the last 4 drafts, including the previous summer. As noted, NCAA picks could still be in college, plus it says their “own” picks, any trades?
To start, for example, I thought about and looked up Detroit and San Jose. Yes, I know Detroit is known to take time with prospects, etc.
Draft picks from 08-11, # played in at least 1 NHL game before this season started based on hockeydb stats.
Detroit: 29 picks, McCollom and Nyquist (1 game each), plus Tatar played 9 games last season
San Jose: 26 picks, Demers and Wingels
Anyway, I was thinking of the ‘05 draft, the way the ’03 draft was looked at for Hugh Jessiman until last season; no, I’m not comparing the ’03 and ’05 first round draft classes; just the way one always heard about Jessiman being the lone player from that first round class yet to play in an NHL game; well, until last season when Nashville gave him a jersey for 2 nights.
Poor Hugh Jessiman. I got to see him play a few times at Dartmouth (I wasn’t a big college hockey fan, so I didn’t go to that many games) but after his first year, I can see why the Rangers drafted him: he was big, strong, and he used those two aspects to score a ton. Of course, he was also playing on one of the strongest teams that Dartmouth had iced to that date (and played on a line with current NHLer Lee Stempniak).
Injuries over the next few years derailed him, though, and he never really played as well as he did his freshman year. Bummer.

I assume we’re talking maximum bonus availability here, since there are rookie max rules. Still, nice to see him say he’s ready to sign.

Strikes me as a little strange to see Ovi doing the toy shopping this year. Haven’t they traditionally used a player with kids for this? Or am I just making that up because I remember Knuble doing it once and maybe bringing along his kids then?

usually it’s the players wives; I wonder if this is a separate Eliot toy thingy?

David Perron in Blues’ line up on Saturday. That is awesome news. Missed 97 games.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

Grubauer named ECHL Goalie of the Month for November.
One bright spot in a fairly dismal month.

That’s how far down we have to go to find a great goalie in this organization?

The new narrative I’m predicting/starting here: Ovi dating Maria Kirilenko is a benefit to the team because, as an athlete herself, she understands discipline and isn’t going to tolerate a fat boyfriend.
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
What are the chances that she gets fat and lazy first?

I might add that a few late evenings with Alex at the Russian Room knocking down the Jewel of Russia may mark the beginning of the decline of the poor girl’s tennis career.

Or maybe it goes the other way and they most enjoy working out fiendishly together. For all we know Ovi may have a basement full of fiendishly-wicked exercise machines—more than Brooksie even.
In all seriousness, an athlete for a girlfriend makes a whole lot more sense to me than an anorexic-looking model. That is if I cared enough to care.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think the Caps are the team being referred to.
