- Oh hai there, Semyon Varlamov. The game-within-the-game ... [Denver Post, WaPo, WashTimes]
- ... and reunions all 'round. [Denver Post]
- Ruffles and flourishes: Tomas Vokoun has a very Presidential new bucket. [RMNB]

- From the Caps-Avs video vault, a very vintage Mike Green goal. Get well soon, @GreenLife52. [YouTube, via @rkfoster8]
- The Hershey Bears have discovered this new-fangled video machine technology, but apparently have yet to acquire chair technology. [PA Puck]

From the NHL.com preview:
Stat Pack: Jeff Schultz is second on the Capitals in goals against per 60 minutes among defensemen behind Karl Alzner at 2.22 and ranks third among the blue line corps in Behind the Net’s quality of competition ratings behind Alzner and John Carlson. That said, Schultz has been a healthy scratch the past three games.

I was planning to write a story with a character named Braden Kolzig (and his last name would be pronounced in the German fashion as “kolts-ig”).

Peerless keeps predicting 3 and 4 goal games for the Capitals. It’s cute. But I’m skeptical.

It was a lot easier to score in bunches when MarJo was punching them in from zero angle, Chimera was getting on the board and the D were putting up a point or two every game.
Now that they’re not, and Semin isn’t scoring at all and AO is scoring only once every dozen games, it’s pretty hard to put up a big number on most nights.
The Avs have looked dreadful in their own zone the couple times I’ve seen them lately, though. Turnovers, blown coverages, lack of back pressure…so if Semin is going to get of the schneid, this would seem to be a good opportunity.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
I’d be pleased if Semin’s scoring resumed a more “normal” rate for him for the rest of the season. His decline in productivity leads me to wonder if last year’s groin injury is a contributing cause.

FWIW, I got a chuckle out of “frozen envelope”.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
I was responding to this, from the Times article:
The Avalanche aren’t the worst team in hockey, but the bottom three teams in the league all have a shot at the No. 1 pick in June’s draft.
It stuck in my head that it was the bottom 5, which turns out to be correct.
As for the frozen envelope, good conspiracy theories never die, but like a fine wine they acquire character with age.

I think I remember watching that Mike Green goal live. I don’t believe it was the first “holy shit moment” with Green – I seem to recall that was a stretch pass to spring someone on a breakaway after he deked some poor donk into a corkscrew – but it was one of the early ones.

I had thought that perhaps Hunter felt safer using two kids on the fourth line with Knuble functioning as a teacher and veteran holding down the line. But with Hendricks back and Eakin presumabley sitting I thought Halpern would drop back down. I seem to recall that Halpern and Hendricks had at one point some pretty good magic together (although that winning streak to open the season is ancient history). I get rewarding players but has Halpern really played significantly better than Knuble?

The PA Puck piece on how French utilizes video coaching is fascinating and wonderfully detailed. Well worth the read. I noticed that French keeps the lessons down to 7 to 9 minutes and that if he singles out the bad play of a particular player he’s good about not being unduly harsh (at least according to the author).

Memorable game including the Green goal, Ovechkin checking Karlis Skrastins (R.I.P.) and breaking the penalty box glass. Sakic’s 1500 NHL point. Ovechkin getting hit by a shot (Morrisonn’s IIRC) late in the game and wondering if he was going to be ok.
The whole game was nuts. Ovechkin also got stuffed on a penalty shot. And I think it was Dater who had a quote from an Avs player in the paper the next day, on the Caps’ tenacious effort: “Geez, who do these guys think they are? The Red Wings?”
I miss that too.

I'm going Tonight
Get to see the Caps live every two years.
Section 104, row 14 – Ovie’s LW side for 1st and 3rd periods. Hopefully I get to see vintage Ovie that has been making an appearance as of late. Varlamov likely to start – here’s hoping he’s as dreadful tonight as he has been all year.

Altitude TV interviewed Winnik about his Gordie Howe hat trick after the second period in the San Jose game Thursday night. In the background Varly walked by shirtless, holding his back and he had some patch thing on his lower back. He played the third period where he let in 3 goals. I guess it’s still bothering him. Honestly I’m surprised that this is the first injury that he appears to have gotten this season.
Every player gets minor injuries. I don’t think this is the start of a month long absence. It’s not like it’s his groin or knee. Who knows though, but if it was really bad, I assume he wouldn’t be the backup. He’s already played 24 games which is almost equal to the total in his previous two seasons. Sacco likes to ride his #1 goalie, he has played Varly 6-7 games in a row before. Not sure if that is the best idea for a player like Varly, but something must be working for him health-wise so far in CO.
And tonight he’ll keep Squeaks and Schultz company in the press box.

That’s scary. Hit the helmet, but still…not good. Geez, at this rate, the Flyers might be able to ice an all-concussion team all on their own. Amazing how dead quiet it got there.
Didn’t see the strike in question, but Mike Green was hit in the helmet last year, and yes it was a concussion.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
It was similar to Green’s. Couturier turned his head, so it hit right behind the ear. He went down immediately and stayed down, longer even than Giroux did the other day. Looked really shaky when he got up.
Seriously? Wow Brian Murray, wow. That is some brutal asset management. I get that Runblad hasn’t been great, but he’s still young, very talented, and then you hang a 2 on it? Add in the fact that they sent a First to get Runblad, and STL used that pick to take Tarasenko… that is a great example of turning something into something much less valuable.

I think I’m higher on Turris than you are, but I don’t think he’s worth a first and a second.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
I think he’s a skilled player who could still pan out to be a pretty good 2C (But not quite a 1C, similar to Marleau, who could probably be a 1C but has Joe Thornton in his way). I don’t like his attitude, but he’s not a bad player, and I think behind Spezza as a 2C he’ll be fairly productive.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
I remember doing a quick query on H-R and the list of “comparable” guys (points/goals/age IIRC) was a few busts but mostly 2nd line types.

I mean, I’d be pissed if the Caps offered a first and a second (basically) for him, especially since I think we have better options in the pipeline, but it’s high-risk high-reward to Ottawa, I think. He’ll either pan out and be fine, and then the trade will only look slightly bad (I’m not really high on Rundblad) or he’ll blow and it’ll be a major bust.

from Kevin Paul Dupont
Just spent 2 hours interviewing Mike Milbury.
Milbury’s account of alleged assault—his part in pulling two youth players apart in skirmish—in Sun. Boston Globe (boston.com).
Milbury not working CBC studio tonight. Mutual decision.
Milbury: 12-y-o son victim of verbal abuse/bullying over two-plus hours of game, pre-shootout. Eventually, pulled bully away from son.
This isn’t the way Milbury should be taken off the air. He should be taken off the air because of what he says on the air.
This kind of stuff wasn’t all that uncommon when I was playing (though 12 years old is pretty young). I can think of several instances that would have been a much bigger deal if the parent involved was as famous as Mike Milbury. I’m obviously not a huge fan of his, but I hope this doesn’t turn into a witch hunt.
Please, call me F&B.
His popularity makes it a witch hunt, but, if reports are true, I can tell you I’ve seen nothing like it in over 10 years associated with youth hockey. It is the job of the refs to separate the kids, not him. He should be on the bench.
Are you saying it was common for a coach to yell at an opposing player or curse at a parent? Not where I’ve coached.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

Really? You’ve seen nothing? St. Loo must be tame.
I was involved in a full on brawl between my team and the opposing parents. We shut the door to the ice so their players were stuck on the ice while we fought their parents (17 years old).
One of my best friends was assaulted after the game and his dad fucked the kid up. It was awesome. As we were walking to the locker room the other kid swung a stick at my friend’s head and so his dad jumped in and dropped the kid with like two punches (17 years old).
And then in a game I wasn’t a part of the coach (former NHLer) grabbed a kid’s face mask in the handshake line and was charged with assault. There was a big deal made about it and when everything came out it turns out the kid had spit at the coach, and tried to spit again, so the coach just grabbed the face mask to avoid being spit at again. I’d just like to see all of the facts come out. Did he actually punch the kid?
Please, call me F&B.
by Rob Parker on Dec 17, 2011 3:15 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
(My involvement on the brawl was limited to breaking it up/protecting a teammate. My dad was watching and would have dropped the hammer if I swung at an adult. But several of my teammates did really fuck up the opposing parents, including our goalie who threw a series of blocker punches.)
Please, call me F&B.
Ha, it was local enough that we all had cars. It was a crazy experience. Cops were called, lots of drama. We were quarantined in our locker room for a long time after it all was settled. Another fight still almost broke out in the parking lot. Their parents were mostly to blame for how it all started, and they took the worst of it. I can’t remember any of my teammates being hurt, but I know they had a few parents leaving bloody. I remember one kid on my team saying “have fun explaining to your wife how you got beat up by a 17 year old.”
Please, call me F&B.
Well – that reminds me. Last year, our team was escorted out of a rink. One of the opposing players was yelling racists comments at our one African-American player all game. One of their kids ended up swinging at our players on the bench, while he was on the ice. Our coach broker it up. Their parents then came down to our locker room after the game to say our coach touched their kid. We waited as a team, to be escorted out by cops.
Of course – my son, decides he has to pee right then. By the time he’s done, the entire team is gone. We got through fine, but learned from the police that it was the second time in two weeks they’d been called out to the rink. Amazing what you find in Illinois compared to Missouri.

I’m racking my brain and haven’t come up with anything similar. I’ve seen kids swing a stick like a baseball bat and hit another in the head. I’ve seen parents threaten refs. I’ve seen coaches threaten refs and parents. I’ve not been part of a brawl between our teams.

With his high profile, this gets more media attention than the average guy would get. But if he did what he’s alleged to have done, the response is appropriate.
