Monday Caps Clips: D.J., We Hardly Knew Ye

- Followup: Last week we brought you a Canadian player's observations of the "Baza" housing system for some of the KHL teams. Some of his teammates and other KHL players have a response. [HCTraktor.ru, via GoogleTrans]
- A look at Cody Eakin and a handful of non-Caps who are rockin' the red on a daily basis. [Capitals Outsider]
- Finally, the South Carolina Stingrays are currently sitting atop the Eastern Conference standings. Part of that success is due to goaltender Philipp Grubauer and his 6-0-0, 1.50 GAA, .946 SV% play. Head coach Spencer Carbery is certainly impressed. A certain associate golatending coach may provide some inspiration as well. [The Post & Courier (Miller), Rays the Roof (Miller)]

So if King’s contract wasn’t on the books for training camp a) who would you have wanted in that roster space then and b) would your choice be the same now that we’ve seen how all four lines have performed for 12 games?
Everyone’s talking Eakin’s # of games and ELC years, but isn’t the current situation already yielding one for someone either way?
"A picture is worth a thousand words. For moving pictures we manage to shorten it to one or two."
I don’t think King took anyone’s roster space. Given the cap and roster situations at the time, I think the decision was just whether to carry him or not. But it’s not like someone else would have made the team if he didn’t.

I missed some days here. What are people talking about regarding Eakin and ELC years? He’s 20yo (May 91 bday) so this is year 1 of his ELC regardless of NHL GP. There is the 40GP threshold related to n accrued season.
As to the roster slot, Eakin needed to be and needs to be in the AHL over watching as a healthy scratch and King wasn’t playing so that doesn’t change things, IMO. Also, I don’t have breakdowns with me but the Caps have not had 23 healthy players on active roster at points this season so King taking up a roster spot earlier wasn’t a big issue so far this season, esp. while using LTIR cap space. .
Dimagus I’m on my phone so sorry in advance if this thread gets too long and I have to bail on the discussion.

Let’s assume everyone gets healthy, and therefore all the roster spots are filled if Eakin stays in DC. With 14 forwards, it would make more sense to send him back to Hershey for playing time, unless he’s earned the right to play decent minutes on a regular basis. However, how likely is it that we see him on the Route 15 yo-yo? Alzner can tell him all about that.
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
Alzner was on the Route 15 Yo-Yo partially because he was still a prospect, and partially because it was an Olympic year, and if he (and Carlson!) played too many games at the NHL level before the Olympic break, they would have had to spend 2 1/2 weeks not playing rather than playing in Hershey.

On the Capitals Outsider article on Eakin, I did a little bit of looking on the Internet and had found an obituary for a George “Red” Eakin from back in Feburary 2010. George is Cody’s grandfather and probably who he inherited his red hair from. given his nickname.

It was suggested here recently that the term “Ginger” was an anagram of a pejorative term and therefore perhaps offensive to some. I hadn’t considered that possibility before: my only reference point for decades has been Ginger Baker. With this newly acquired information I was surprised at how many times the term was used in that article. This makes me wonder if I am the victim of some snark or someone’s over-active imgination or sense of political correctness.

Huh. Wouldn’t the overlap between redheads and the folks who are the target of that pejorative term be pretty minimal? Seems a bit silly to try to tie the two together (though I’ll cop to having noticed that anagram before, but that’s just the way my brain works… with letters and numbers, not rasicm).
I’d thought that Southpark had brought “ginger” into the forefront of pop culture.

I’m not really familiar with either of them. Question 1: Is either a center? Question 2: Is either of them good at taking faceoffs?
In Malin’s post about it being unrealistic to expect Marjo to step into the NHL and be a 2C, Berglund was the guy he’d have to imitate.

Oshie seems like one of those players that one day is going to put everything together — talent, drive, consistency — and have an unbelievable season. I doubt it’s going to be with the Blues, though.
I love Oshie’s game but I seriously doubt whether he can keep playing the way he does and stay healthy.
Please, call me F&B.
I’m not sure I’d want either. The reason they would be gone would be repeated maturity issues. That’s why Oshie is only signed to a one year contract. I don’t think the Caps are a team where the Risk/Reward for taking them on pays off.
I’d do terrible things to get Backes though, even though we’d need to change to team to fit in his $4.5 mill

If John Davidson has completely lost his marbles and wants to part with Berglund, I’d package the #13 pick in next year’s draft together with Brooks Laich and pray.

Not exactly the 2-for-1 deal one would hope for (if one is contemplating both), and I’m not a fan of importing a potential problem that brings with it the uncertainty of how their talent will mesh (if thinking of one or the other). There are teams that might be in a position to take a flyer on that sort of risk, but I’m not seeing the Caps as one of them. Better the devil you know in this case.
If you've read this far...seek help.
I’m not so sure. Oshie is a bargain on his current deal and could really benefit from a change of scenery.

I guess I’m just deeply cynical that change would help the Caps. The Caps are currently playing well. They have room for improvement, but the trends are pointing upwards.
The Blues have gone through 4 coaches in 6 years. Something is seriously wrong with that room. Some players might do much better in a new environment, but taking that gamble with a player who has been part of the problem seems too risky to me. I love seeing Oshie play, but I don’t trust him as a player.
I don’t recall off ice issues involving Berglund so I wouldn’t be opposed to have the Caps trade for him, but I don’t think it would be worth the price plus whoever he would push out.

The Caps have problem children? Please, its not like someone on the team stole a luggage cart at the Olymp… oh, right.

Fedor tweeted a link to comments Kuznetsov made about staying in the KHL but the link is broken. Even with Google’s relatively accurate translation I can’t find the article link. Anyone have it?
Here’s what he tweeted:
Kuznetsov: “Starting to think if you actually need to go to the NHL if you’re treated so well here.”
“Of course, I’m in huge doubt [regarding NHL departure]. I’m not going anywhere now – I’ll end the season here …It’s my last year of the contract, we’ll see how it develops then.”
Obviously, the KHL wants him to stay in Russia. I might be cynical about this, but I wonder how short his leash is and what would happen if he goes on a goal drought or spends most of a season injured.
championat.ru is the link he meant to post, though championat usually aggregates and excerpts stories from elsewhere. Kuzya is walking a fine line right now. He is a legitimate star in his own right, and has been accorded a very high status in his hometown and across Russia. Even the pictures of Traktor memorializing Loko before the season were telling – Kuzya was the number one person lighting the memorial candle, even ahead of the coach and GM. He spends time regularly with the Governor of Chelyabinsk region, gets to do cool star stuff like be a celebrity judge at talent contests, etc. He got a free house and free wedding, and feels a very strong connection to his fans.
He may wish to give up all that to test himself against the best players in the world – or maybe he won’t.
If he does plan to come over, he doesn’t want to offend all his supporters and politicians.
He reports to Team Russia today for the international tournament this weekend.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Coach Bill said he wants to try Kuznetsov at center at that tournament. I just read something strange, apparently the Russians might not have learned all the much if they are still favoring KHL players for the Olympics. Coach Bill said it would be ideal to have a national team made up of KHL players.
From sovsport.ru:
More convenient for you recruit players from the CHL team or the NHL?
- Ideal for the Russian team – a team of players from the KHL, which we can prepare for the remaining time before the Olympics. But it’s difficult to say whether it will do. And the NHL would add the best ones.
my archive of post pages has been updated to include this weekend’s stuff. Including Sunday’s D2, so everyone can see Mr. Greenberg’s contributions as they appear in the print edition. (want to actually read ‘Good Ol’ Hockey Game’? Here’s the PDF)

I’m sure this has been discussed ad naseum here (but I’ve been away from the board for about 10 days), but what is the general consensus for the cause of Semin’s lackluster (at best) play? Injured? Pissed? Disinterested?
For once, it’s not for a lack of center. Aside from the faceoffs, Mojo has been very good
RAMPAGE
by JediChewbacca on Nov 7, 2011 10:56 AM EST up reply actions
Mojo has been great. I had great expectations for the line, and still do. Other than the ‘head,’ issues, I noticed he has been relying on some of his past moves too much. Also, for some reason, he seems a bit more cautious than last year…even looking to pass first (if you can imagine). As the stats indicate, MarJo has more goals than assists which is a little odd when you have a rifle winger like Semin. So, they have to get their ‘instinctive’ play together. It may also help to get a little more stability in the other wing so they can play a bit more together as a 3-man unit. I still think that line will ultimately become lethal, however, thereby opening up the other 3 lines even more.
Many casual fans would disagree. I almost had to turn around and tell the guy behind me at the Ducks game last week who was screaming about how bad Mojo sucks how much of an idiot he was, but I didn’t see the point. His wingers need to start finishing the chances he’s creating for them, but in general I never hate the guys who are tied for the team lead in goals.

probably true, but I will say I consider myself pretty lucky at Nats games. People are there for one of two reasons: because they’re passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans, or because they admittedly haven’t the first clue but think it sounds like a fun way to spend the evening while paying $8 for watered-down beer.
