Friday Caps Clips: Caps @ 'Canes Game Day
Your savory breakfast links:
- Previews of tonight's hoedown with the Hurricanes from Vogs, NHL.com, SB Nation DC, Peerless, RMNB, KOL, Caps Basketball, CRtC and RtR, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Canes Country for more coverage from the other side of tonight's match-up.
- Notes and assorted whatnot from yesterday's practice:
- In general. [Caps365 video (Kettler Report, Boudreau, Ovechkin, Laich, Beagle)]
- Mike Green skates, briefly, and Troy Brouwer doesn't. [CW (Whyno), CI (Carrera), DCEx (McNally)]
- Both Green and Brouwer will travel with the team, though it's not certain that they will play. [CI (Carrera)]
- Jay Beagle makes an appearance. He plans to skate today for the first time post-injury at KCI while the team is on the road. [CW (Whyno, and again), DCEx (McNally)]
- D.J. King will play the waiting game. [CI (Carrera)]
- The lines looked a little different at practice, with Alexander Semin on 1R and a Eakin-MJ90-MP85 second line. Will that hold in a game situation? We'll know later tonight. [DCEx (McNally)
- Bruce Boudreau did his weekly hit with Chad and LaVar. Guess what he talked about. [106.7 The Fan (audio)]
- Something about this season seems... familiar. [Peerless]
- Of youth and age. [Dump 'N Chase]
- Defense-by-committee appears to be the name of the game as the Caps' blueliners work without Mike Green ... [WashTimes (Whyno)]
- ... but it sure helps to have Dennis Wideman picking up the offense. [WaPo (Carrera)]
- One more look back at Cody Eakin's big-league debut. [CI (El-Bashir)]
- Five minutes with Brooks Laich, and his interesting insight regarding his role with the team. [Golden Goal Sports]
- In which John Carlson, Karl Alzner, Jeff Schultz, and Troy Brouwer help raise awareness and money to end domestic violence by wearing bespoke suits. [Revamp.com, and hey Sarge]
- "Beer me!" #fancystats for the frosty beverage set at the Verizon Center and arenas around the league. [Puck Daddy]
- Happiness is Caps' Young Guns. [Mr. Irrelevant]
- Finally, happy 33rd birthday to Rick Berry.

$62.42 my ass. Maybe if you’re only considering nosebleeds
And speaking of VC beer, I haven’t been to many games as of late. I think I’ve seen red hook. Anyone got a list of beer brands currently sold there? I’d love to see me some dogfishhead or something above 6%
Someone please tell me where i can get a 24 oz beer for $7.50 at Verizon Center.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
This…as much as we’d like to believe most guys would want to stay over the money, no doubt you have your agent in your ear telling you all the things you should or shouldn’t do. When you look at what other guys got too, I feel like Brooks could have gotten more had he hit the open market anyways.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.
by Davethecapsfan on Nov 4, 2011 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think anyone is blind to the realities of the situation. And I don’t think anyone even begrudges Laich wanting to get paid – he’s worked his whole life for this, has a short earning-window, etc.
The problem (if there is one) is in the Boy Scout proclamations that the money never mattered, that he hoped someone would let him play hockey and so on. Slightly disingenuous.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
A trap of the ever present microscope in my mind. Reading/hearing quotes like you mentioned never made me thing he was going to sign here for $1 million a year.
Until you actually are out there on the market, you don’t know your worth or how much the team wants to keep you. I don’t think there is a problem, never seems disingenuous to me when you just don’t know what is going to happen. First time for Brooks in that scenario.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.
by Davethecapsfan on Nov 4, 2011 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions
No one thought he’d go for $1m. But if it was “never about the money,” I’m sure he could have taken a very fair deal from the Caps that would set him up for life weeks before making them sweat it out at the 11th hour.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
We’ll never know if they were really sweating it out though. We’ll never know if they didn’t have other possible moves they were looking at that delayed signing Brooks. At the time he signed it, I felt like he made his money, but I never felt like it was an unfair deal from the team’s side. After seeing what other guys got paid, and the fact Brooksie has taken to the role he’s been asked to without complain, I think it ended up a very fair deal.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.
by Davethecapsfan on Nov 4, 2011 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions
I think it ended up a very fair deal.
That may or may not be the case, but it’s irrelevant – the Leino and Fleischmann deals, for example, were signed after Laich’s.
I guess since we’ll never know (publicly) what the team offered and when, there’s not much point continuing this discussion, but it’s hard to imagine they didn’t make a fair offer to him long before he signed.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Agreed on all points. I think it’s hard to imagine Laich’s agent wasn’t in his ear the whole time telling him to test the market and see what his value was (whether or not he wanted to stay with the Caps). In the end, it didn’t get to that point, and that’s good enough for me.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.
by Davethecapsfan on Nov 4, 2011 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions
I have no interest in getting back into the Laich contract debate, but I just want to point out that blaming the agent is crap. They are an “agent.” It’s right there in the word. They do what Laich says. They can tell them what they think the player will make on the market, but the player has to have the stones to call the shots. The agent doesn’t have unilateral power to go for top dollar if Laich says another deal is acceptable.
Please, call me F&B.

I liked it a lot less before Leino, Cole and Flash got the same money. If 4.5 if the going rate for a 20 goal scorer, then that’s what it is. Nothing you can do about it. Throw in that Laich is by far the most versatile and best defensive player of that group and it’s hard to complain about the deal.
Please, call me F&B.
But what do subsequent deals have to do with what he said about his own negotiations, etc.?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

Right, I’m not talking about his comments, which I’ve thoroughly made my stance clear on. I’m just saying that from a market-value standpoint I don’t think the Caps got as hosed as I did when he signed the deal.

I’m not sure if I’d say he’s outperforming Flash. Granted 11 points vs. 7 doesn’t compare the minutes/competition they are getting. Flash numbers are pretty good right now. But I have no issues with our 3rd line center putting up 7 points in 10 games and a +3 playing against the lines they’re playing against.

If you accept that, in the aggregate, shot quality doesn’t exist, then yes.
Even for those who won’t go that far, it’s still an unlucky stretch – a zero shooting percentage while posting strong possession stats coupled with a lousy save percentage from their own goalie.
Backstrom’s there as a point of comparison (and worth noting on his own) – he’s had a dominant Corsi and converted, while at the same time getting saves behind him. He’s got a PDO there of 1065, which is awfully high.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Personally I’ve felt like MJ90 has missed out on a ton of assists this year and parts of last year on plays he creates where guys just haven’t finished. I was looking more at the sv % behind them when calling them unlucky. Shot quality/poor D play on their part could affect this obviously…but it just seems extremely low for it to account for all of it.

But anything is a rental for a team looking to get in, so I’d guess a move from that aspect isn’t practical. There would have to be something to wow GMGM (or Semin would have to sign a multi-year extension) for any decision on Semin’s future past this year to occur.

I don’t think they signed Semin to a 1-year deal with the intention of flipping him. Maybe if things go completely pear-shaped and the Caps are in 12th place at the deadline, then they might blow it up and trade him. But barring that, the idea behind signing Semin was to compete for a Cup this year.
Also, see Neil’s numbers elsewhere in the thread. 28 and 90 have been more than holding their own at evens when the score is tied, but the save pct has been bad and the goals just haven’t been going in.

Looks like Matt Bradley had to answer for a clean hit last night (and got his ass kicked): http://www.hockeyfights.com/fights/106396
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’d love it if they would start suspending players for attacking a guy for making a clean hit. Such horseshit.
I’m the type that likes organic, frustration/in-game-hatred driven fights, but I’m starting to wonder if outright banning fights (fight→gamer + suspension) if it will mean and end to this shit.
Clean, hard, spectacular hitting is way more important to this game than fighting.
↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → b a (select) start
This wasn’t a third player coming in to avenge a teammate. This was Mayers taking things into his own hands after he took a hit from Bradley. I’m ambivalent about this. On the one hand, Mayers didn’t rely on someone coming to his aid. On the other hand, c’mon, Jamal…if you were fit enough after taking the hit to duke it out, how bad was the hit?
If you've read this far...seek help.
I didn’t catch that it was the same guy (no sound at work), but my point still stands. Moreover, I don’t want “am I willing to fight this guy?” to be part of the decision making process for a good, clean, hard hit. That is total crap.
If Mayers was so upset about the it, take his number, and get him cleanly later in the game. Or you know, take it to the score board. But then again, Mayers has roughly as many fights as points in the last 4-5 seasons, so that is rather unlikely…
↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → b a (select) start
This is why I’m reluctant to support a fighting ban. I feel like the “take his number and get him cleanly later” philosophy will lead to some unclean retaliation later in the game (probably a total dead horse, but I think it’s a reasonable concern) I’d rather the guys fight, but the refusal to apply the instigator rule is maddening.
Part of me wonders if the instigator rule doesn’t contribute to fighting after clean hits. Because of that rule, a guy who’s considering defending a teammate has to make a snap decision at the time of the hit whether or not to go after the hitter. If there’s no instigator, he can sit down, think about it, maybe ask the guy who got cleaned out, and then go after the hitter in a later shift.
by Murshawursha on Nov 4, 2011 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions
I think there’s a fair case there. I’m not sure it’s specifically the instigator per se, but the way the league cracks down on “premeditated” attacks definitely plays a role, I think.
Then again, what was the last premeditated attack that got punished?
Please, call me F&B.
What was the last attack that we can define as premeditated?

I suppose that depends on your definition of premeditation. If you’re talking Bertuzzi-Moore, then… Bertuzzi-Moore. If you’re talking a guy skating over to straighten out a guy who just hit a teammate, it happens all the time.

Right. Such concern about Rule 48 and Shanspensions taking hitting out of the game, when IMO having to answer for clean hits can have more of an impact.
I would like to see instigator rule applied to a player who goes after someone for a non-penalized hit regardless of whether the player who made the hit was a willing participant in the fight or not.

In fairness, the puck was not in Mayers’ possession at the time of the hit (although it had been just a nanosecond earlier).

I eyeballed that a couple times…Mayers definitely advanced the puck out of the zone, not sure what he was so pissed about other than getting decked in front of his mates.

so a clean hit results in being punched in the side of the head from behind? This is type of sh*t that needs to be removed. Fights for clean hits are a damn joke and hurt the image of the NHL with casual fans and I’m not aware of any hardcore fans who approve of this crap either.

That’s my circle of friends’ solution anyway.

It’s not the posting-to that’s the problem so much as the embedding – what’s great about the “WWR” sidebar is it keeps people on the site or coming back to the site throughout the day. Sending them somewhere else doesn’t do anything for me.
And I suppose I could set up a widget to just run an RSS from that tumblr feed, but that would end up being more work and far less elegant (and timely, ultimately).

I’m with you. I think Kaleta is comfortably in Cooke territory where you have to severely punish him for intentional illegal conduct. Everything about what he did was premeditated and he’s done it multiple times in the past. Maybe 4 games is enough, but 8 would have made the point even clearer. And hey, it’s not like they historically care about precedent…
I’d have given him 8 to 10 minimum,. In Shanny’s video, he cited three other incidents in which Kaleta did basically the same thing. If that doesn’t shout, “Repeat offender who needs to book thrown at him,” I don’t know what does. Kaleta’s a scumbag and he desrved way more than he got.
by Murshawursha on Nov 4, 2011 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions
the problem is was he officially punished for those other times. Cleaning up the inconsistencies of the prior regime is Shanahan’s biggest stumbling block in my opinion.
Frankly, I don’t care if he was officially punished. They happened, there was video evidence they happened, and that should be enough. Pretty sure the only two people who would complain if Kaleta took an extended vacation are him and his agent.
I understand what you’re saying, but I think it should be Shanny’s prerogative as “the new guy” to consider Kaleta’s history, regardless of whether or not Campbell suspended. And I think he missed a really great chance to send a message here.
I agree that he is simultaneously handcuffed by precedent and charged with changing the outlook players have for these hits. They weren’t ambiguous “partial head/shoulder contact where the victim changed position” kind of hits — three instances of head-butting should definitely be enough for Shanny to come down harsh and say “This may be inconsistent with the previous [aka shitty] way this stuff was handled, but that’s why I’m here and this is the way it will be handled moving forward.”

So, then: Is Briere’s “controversial” SO goal last night going to change the way players approach the gimmick? Saw it live and thought, this HAS to be called back. But it wasn’t…
I thought it was crap. I recognize that lots of attempts violate the letter of the law – players pull pucks back on dekes all the time (and I know that when they’re moving forward, pulling it back doesn’t necessarily mean the puck actually reverses direction), but I thought this violated the letter and the spirit of the rule.
The good thing is that since it didn’t impact the result of the game, the League has a golden opportunity to clarify it, even admit a mistake if they made one. I’m not holding my breath.

Please, call me F&B.
My problem with it isn’t seeing it happen in shootouts, because shootouts are a joke. My problem with it is that it sets a precedent for what’s allowable in a penalty shot situation (since the same rules apply in both situations).
Let’s say that goal is scored on a penalty shot with 8 minutes remaining in a tied Game 7 of the conference finals. Do we really want a series decided by that goal?

I figure it’s bound to happen eventually. As much as I think the shootout is dumb, a shootout loss cost the Rangers a trip to the playoffs 2 seasons ago. Given that a shootout attempt can potentially make or break a season, shouldn’t the rules have some credibility?

This has been a popular refrain among the anti-shootout crowd, but it’s not exactly true. Had there been no shootout at all and the teams awarded a tie, the Rangers still wouldn’t have made the playoffs because they have fewer wins than the Flyers. If you want to look at how the results of all the shootouts in the season affected the playoffs then fine, but the Rags didn’t get hosed by the shootout in the last game of the season.

you can easily pick any number of games during the season to say “if only the Habs hadn’t gotten that one stinking point!” Personally, I’m kinda fond of picking on that February game where the refs disallowed an Ovechkin goal and the Habs ended up winning in OT. Goal allowed, Ovie wins Richard. Goal allowed, Caps win. Goal allowed, Habs are sitting at home in April. Goal allowed, Caps play Rangers and we all know what that means.

I’m not saying they got hosed by the shootout. I’m just saying if you’re going to attach a point to winning the shootout, the rules need to be respected.
In addition to respecting the rules in the context of the shootout, they also need to consider that allowing a move in the shootout has implications in a penalty shot too, since both plays are governed by the same rules.

Yes. Which is why I said lots of attempts do violate the letter of the law, but are still kosher with the spirit/intent (and note that a player moving at high speed can slow the puck down considerably – but not to zero – and give the illusion that the puck is moving backwards).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Your last point is why I think the fact that Briere was also stopping short (evidenced by the snow shower) makes this such BS. There’s no illusory “moving backward” because Briere isn’t really moving forward.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
Which is where I disagree with this from Wysh:
In the NHL’s defense, perhaps they judge this like they judge a spin-o-rama move, which is legal under Rule 24.2:To me, that implicitly says that a move that doesn’t involve continuous motion isn’t permitted. This would seem to be an example of one such impermissible move.
The spin-o-rama type move where the player completes a 360° turn as he approaches the goal, shall be permitted as this involves continuous motion.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
But seeing as Briere was continuing to breathe during that move, he was in continuous motion, so it’s legit. You also need to consider heart beats and blood pulsing through his circulatory system.

One of the things I considered, and the NHL may have as well, is whether the shooter actually came to a complete stop. I only watched it once, and it sure looked like he did to me, but I’m not positive. Going from 80 MPH to 1 MPH is, close enough to a stop to get you out of a traffic ticket, but it isn’t really stopping.
If the NHL watched the video, and concluded he only slowed down “albeit dramatically” I could see them awarding the goal. But I dunno that this was part of their logic.

Agreed that this is the crucial point. Briere not only pulled the puck back, but he stopped dead to do it. Sicne the spin-o-rama exception specifically states it involves a continuous motion, it shouldn’t apply to Briere’s goal.
by Murshawursha on Nov 4, 2011 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree. And in a spin-o-rama, doesn’t the player still have to be generally moving towards the goal-line? Briere didn’t do that here – his forward momentum completely stopped. To me, that’s why this one shouldn’t count. I’m surprised that is not the rule – having trouble imagining a good goal where the player does not maintain some degree of forward momentum. I know DeBoer agrees after reading his lips.
Of course, this attempt also violated the “puck can’t stop” rule, though clearly that rule can’t mean what it says given the physics of generally accepted stickhandling.
Question on some moves is whether it actually reverses direction or is just slowed enough that the players momentum makes it appear to reverse direction.

There was another part of that play that I think the league should address. As I saw it, Briere’s embellished stop was intended to blind the goaltender with snow. I think the league can solve this problem as much by requiring the player to exhibit continuous movement toward the goal as the puck. For all but the most imaginative and skillful moves a shooter can think up, where he goes, the puck goes. If he’s moving forward continuously, so will the puck.
If you've read this far...seek help.
It surprised me that there seems to be no rule about forward motion of the player, because I could have sworn it was required. For example, when a player loses control of the puck, if the puck continues to move forward, he can turn around on a dime and get it?
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
In the famous Kovalchuk shootout attempt, he completely loses the puck and isn’t allowed to retrieve it. He’s skating down and moving the puck…then he (I’m guessing) moves it a little too hard and can’t catch it in time, so he keeps going forward, but the puck goes sideways. But, the puck goes sideways and back so maybe the puck’s trajectory away from the goal is why that was a failed attempt.
He stopped. BS goal. The end. I don’t know what ISN"T a goal if this is one. BTW, that spin-o-rams junk that someone, I think it was MSL did last year seemd almost as bad. Almost but not even near.

I’m ok with Vokoun getting an extra night of rest regardless of whatever rationale BB uses. I don’t want him playing 60+ games this year and he was on pace for much more than that.
Agreed. 100%. I’d have started Neuvy tonight. I’d have just explained myself differently. Something to the tune of, “Michal needs the work and he’s played well against these guys, so why not?”
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’m OK with Vokoun getting a night of rest and not playing both games of the back-to-back, but I’d prefer to see Vokoun against the divisional opponent, rather than against the non-divisional opponent (who, for what it’s worth, can’t buy a goal these days).

Because he and his agent didn’t bitch about being disrespected when Vokes wasn’t giving the opening night start?

Bruce just gave his reason for not starting Vokoun against the ‘Canes point blank:
"Quite frankly I know Tomas didn’t have good success against them last year."He could have commented how since the Detroit game he’s given up 9 goals on 51 shots (.824SV%), that maybe his age has crept up on him and he’s overworked. To me, that would have been more disrespectful than just giving his reason for picking one player over an other.
I hope Allan Walsh’s comments about the opener were just those of an agent letting his new client know he has his back. Hate to think we’ve got a diva goalie that can’t take a negative comment about the body of his work from his coach.

I just think it’s the wrong reason. I’d like to hope that the coach is making decisions based on things that matter – such as workload/rest, recent play, relevant past performance – and not shit that doesn’t, such as a three-game sample from last season that came for a different (and shitty) team.

Given that no one in this organization necessarily says what actually goes into their decisions to the media, and any one of us, early in the week, knew it was likely Neuvy would be the goalie to start against Carolina for any number of reasons, I don’t quite get why this is sticking in your craw so hard.
Because it’s believable.
And it’s not sticking so hard – I just raised it and then elaborated a bit.

Because it’s believable that the reason Bruce gave is the reason why? I guess, but I tend to think he had little interest in running down all the various reasons and picked that one to use as his go-to with the media.
Seeing this discussion go on here and at twitter may have magnified its apparent importance out of proportion to your actual level of concern. My apologies for misconstruing the degree to which this was obstructing your craw. ;)
Heh. I think that’s it exactly.

Ah, c’mon JP admit it: You’re in luv with Vokoun.
Jimmy said he saw you staring dreamy eyes at him in homeroom last week. : )

I won’t deny it. I’m not trying to hide it. I’m a slave for ’Koun.

Actually, with Walsh’s coment, it’s obvious the classy goalie has a diva agent.

Uh huh. As if Walsh acted totally independently there.

I could see Walsh doing something like that … most other agents, no, but Walsh is a troublemaker.

I think people need to understand the concept of agency a little better.

We have a college Prof in the crowd…perhaps a little chalk talk on the fundamental principles of the agent-principal relationship would liven up the afternoon?
Patron saint of quality footwear.
The college prof isn’t where you start that lesson. One of the bagillion lawyers could probably teach that lesson better.
Please, call me F&B.
Right, there are no principal-agent relationships in politics, only in the law.

If you had it your way you’d be a lawyer, doctor, goalie, power forward, and handsome. You are at most 2 of those things.
Please, call me F&B.
No wonder you went to law school, your counting is extremely poor.
And if I wanted to be a lawyer I’d be one.

If you wanted to be a lawyer, the lawyers on this board would be forced to talk you out of it.

Fortunately I was wise enough to talk myself out of it back when I was making decisions about grad school.

I’ve no particular lawyerific aspirations myself, but my girlfriend is dead-set on it… Why do you all hate your jobs so much? :P
Because the work is lousy and there’s not enough of it these days.
Tortorella: Can I get another question? I went in here in a pretty good mood today, too.
Larry Brooks: So did I.
Tortorella: Well, you obviously f***ed that up, didn't you?
Unless you’re doing IP work. From what I hear, there’s a ton of demand for that.

The fact that the cast of Jersey Shore has an income that can be described as ridiculous seriously disturbs me. Why America cares so much about the stupid shit they do is beyond me.
