Or better yet – scratch him for a couple of games and make him watch videos of Hatcher, Chara and Pronger (similar size, really physical guys). How do people feel about the no suspension ruling for the hit on Eakin? I only listened to most of the game and can’t watch any videos of the hit because of where I am for the holidays. Did Eakin change his position enough that it resulted in an unintended head hit?

by capsyoungguns on Nov 25, 2011 11:02 AM EST reply actions

Eh, I expected some sort of supplementary discipline, but am not up in arms about there being none.

It is the view of the Department of Player Safety that in spite of the fact that there was contact with the head, when Bogosian committed to the check, he was coming for Eakin’s shoulder and Eakin’s change of direction and opening up after his dump-in just prior to the contact contributes enough that there will be no supplementary discipline.

I’m not thrilled with the “blame the victim” rationale – let’s see if it remains consistent.

Yeah. My thoughts on the relevance of injury are well-documented here. I just don’t (and never will) see how Bogo’s hit is any better or worse based on whether or not Eakin could get up from it.

Not disagreeing with you here, but I can’t help but think it entered into it. Shanahan was doing very well with not letting it matter, but I’m pretty sure there’s been at least one time it did. My second point was that I’m not convinced Eakin wasn’t concussed.

Join the club here. Matty Perreault now admits that he got concussed during the infamous Gleason hit last year that fractured his nose. He didn’t want to admit it since he was trying to stay in the lineup. That could be Eakin’s dilemma as well.

A elbow to the head, is an elbow to the head. I didn’t see Eakin shifting all that much prior to the hit and it’s always on the player to be aware of his elbows as much as he is his stick.

Part of me is a little bit bothered by it, but then again, Bogo has never been called to the principal’s office before and they did fine him. I suspect that he was given a stern warning (in monotone… ) about what he did and to not do it again.

I don’t think Bogo will be someone who qualifies for the frequent hearing plan.

by miseenjeu on Nov 25, 2011 11:51 AM EST reply actions

I think the answer to that is yes.

Speaking of suspensions, Deveaux of the Rangers had a hearing yesterday for his hit on Flash. Rangers have called up a replacement, yet I haven’t seen word yet that he’s actually suspended. Four hours before game time, shouldn’t it have been released?

Even if he hadn’t had his hearing yet, he’d still be suspended. From Rule 21.2:

In addition to the match penalty, the player shall be automatically suspended from further competition until the Commissioner has ruled on the issue. See also Rule 29 – Supplementary Discipline.

Once a player gets a match penalty they’re suspended immediately until they get the hearing. I’m sure the official "I’m Brendan Shanahan… " video will be up soon at NHL.com

You’re the f’in Godfather of player behavior, how about a nice pin-stripe power suit to show you mean business. Perhaps an NHL shield lapel pin. I also wouldn’t mind seeing him use a judge’s gavel once he announces the suspension.

The CBA says:

For Players that are suspended, either by a Club or by the League, the
Player Salary and Bonuses that are not paid to such Players shall not count against a
Club’s Upper Limit or against the Players’ Share for the duration of the suspension, but
the Club must have Payroll Room for such Player’s Player Salary and Bonuses in order
for such Player to be able to return to Play for the Club.

My interpretation of that is…no. Injuries and illness count against the cap, but I don’t think suspensions do. It looks like from the CBA paragraph that the player isn’t paid for the duration of his suspension.

by jopierce on Nov 25, 2011 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

So the other team still has to pay for the guy that got injured, but your team is off the hook for the offender that got suspended.

by Dimagus on Nov 25, 2011 12:11 PM EST up reply actions

If it doesn’t count against the cap, it’s a catch 22. You want a player and a team to be punished for the suspension but I guess in order for that to happen, the suspended player must still be paid so the salary he gets would be counted against the cap.

by jopierce on Nov 25, 2011 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

The suspended player’s pay for that day gets donated to a Player Safety Fund but don’t recall the official name of the fund. So the money does get spent — just not on the player.

Anyone want my tix for today's game?

Something came up last minute. I’d rather they go to a Caps fan than whoever I’ll catch in front of VC later. In tribute to this great site, I’ll sell them for face with no t/a costs: $125 each for Club Level on the blue line Caps shoot twice. Email if interested carlosla2006 at yahoo dot com

You pay me via paypal, and I’ll email you tix.

Sorry I know this doesn’t belong here, but only 2 hours to game time…
