Per McKenzie, Bogosian’s got a date with Shanny this afternoon for his headshot on Eakin.

I was wondering about that hit. Thank you for the update and happy Thanksgiving to everyone here.

That is a vile hit on Flash. Keep in mind he has to treat his clotting condition with blood thinners.

Was yesterday Ginger Hunting Day or what? Bad hits made on both our current and former gingers. (Were they mistaking them for turkeys or what?)
Anyway, I assume we can expect fairly long suspensions for Bogosian and Deveaux.

Enjoy. I drove to a local CT Toys R Us ten years back at 6 am on Black Friday, to see what was what. I was amazed and appalled to see hundreds of people there already. I had always hoped the Black Friday thing was an urban legend. Alas, no.
Terrifically juvenile.
A number of years ago, when the early-bird started around 6 – 7 am, I headed out just for the heck of it. I never have a large amount of things to buy, and it gets less every year. Anyway, at that time, it was great. I got everything I went out for and was done by 8 am.
The ads in today’s paper are kind of cool that it almost makes me wish I needed to go shopping. I usually get almost everything I need online these days.

Toys R Us is opening at 9 pm on Thanksgiving this year, I believe. Same with Wal-Mart. Scary.

I recall when he recorded a version of the “Scooby Dooby Doo” song. Anyway, did you know that his first name was Sidney? Yup, Sidney Matthew Sweet. Glad he uses his middle name.
Speaking of his name. His mom was actually a Rooney, with a great grandfather named Patrick Joseph. Well, Patrick J. Rooney had a brother named Matthew who always would have loved to have seen one of relatives name a child Matthew in honor of him. That didn’t happen. But it happened next generation — with Matthew Sweet and a cousin of mine named Matthew Foley.

I swear I cannot tell whats going on here. How was that not a penalty? He didn’t even have the puck. I mean, I’m not complaining, cause its friggin awesome, but I cannot figure out what possessed him to do that.
Basically, the puck gets trapped against the stick on the ice. So Laich bull rushes because he’s got as much chance at getting the puck as anyone, stick or no. That’s why the puck gets kicked back.

If it wasn’t followed almost immediately by the sequence that lead to the OT game winner, it would have stood out as an a remarkably effective play. With the goal so close on its heels it became foreplay, overshadowed by end result.

Is it a mandatory practice? Now next question. What happens now if a guy misses a meeting and there doesn’t exist an extra body on the roster to take his place in the lineup?
(That’s the one problem with using healthy scratch as a disciplinary measure for missing meetings. There might now always be a body that’s available. Now here’s what would really be a reproach. If a forward’s in the press box and the 7th D is playing as a forward.)
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
The more I read about Ward’s benching, the less I buy that the sleeping-in was the reason he was scratched. I’m thinking this is media-induced drama.
JW played one helluva game against Phoenix. Apparently, he did that with the flu. Which, as someone in someone on Twitter pointed out, might be a good reason for oversleeping.
BB has to bench someone, so why not sit the guy with the flu to give him a night to rest (especially after playing the way he did in Phoenix). The sleeping-in was a reason of covnenience.
Ward got a night off, BB appeared all about accountability, MP85 & Squeaks played their little hearts out, and everyone was happy.
by creasemonkey on Nov 24, 2011 12:49 PM EST up reply actions
My husband doesn’t really buy the sleeping-in thing either. He’s convinced it was a “face saving” way to get Semin back in the lineup.
I frankly do wonder how healthy Ward was feeling on Monday.
Anyway, if Ward did oversleep, I would not be surprised that he was more flaky and forgetful (as in forgetting to set the alarm) when he wasn’t feeling quite right.
Not the first guy scratched this year after just getting well. Johansson as well. A week before the opener, Johansson had been ill. He played a pre-season game with a cold and left early due to dizziness. Missed Caps con the next day. It would not surprise me if the reason that MarJo did not play with passion during the last week of preseason was that the cold had sapped his energy to a great degree. (An office mate of mine was sick, with a cold, at the same time as MoJo and he was still not doing well a week later
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
If JW really did miss a meeting, I’m glad he was scratched. Same if he had the flu.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
But I wonder how many guys on the Caps have missed meetings over the years. This seems like a consequence that would be impossible to enforce all the time. Suppose we had only 12 healthy and available forwards, if one misses a meetings, is he replaced in the lineup by our 7th defenseman?
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
Can only really be used when possible, obviously, but when possible, I would do that as a coach, yes. Caps won, message sent, if Ward’s ego is that fragile that he is upset now, I’m sure he’ll be sad all the way to the bank as he cashes his paycheck.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
The one problem with your theory is that Ward getting benched for sleeping in and missing a meeting is embarrassing for him and makes him look bad, while being scratched because he has the flu is no big deal. Boudreau has said before that he scratched guys for being ill, why wouldn’t he admit it here? It’s not like admitting to an injury they are afraid someone will target.
I do agree that you are more likely to oversleep when ill.
In fact, I did that once. I has missed the first three days of work one week with a cold. I went back the next day. The following day, I overslept and my car pool member had called me up (or come over) wondering where I was. I got ready in a big hurry.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
Interesting that ‘91’ was the fallback number for Orlov — after 9, the number he wanted but ended up with ‘81’. I was wanting to see either Orlov or Eakin choose 91 as their number but, alas, that was not to be. Should I root for Flemming to make it and choose 91? LOL!
Admit to being slightly biased on that front, given that I have a kid born that year.

Didn’t know Alzner did that whole routine. I feel like I would lose count pretty easily with so many distractions.
He doesn’t do most of that now, after Jose Theodore took him to dinner to explain how much energy he was wasting with his routines.

Oh, thanks. Just based off this article, that certainly sounds like he had some obsessive behaviors.

Not hosting this year. We’re bringing humitas (Bolivian style, with cheese, my latin American family’s tradition) and this green beans, onion, and fennel side dish that is just amazing. And two pumpkin pies. And a chocolate-caramel-walnut tart that is beyond rich.

I have never heard of humitas until now but after reading up on it, that sounds amazing Gouldie.

This seems to not be uncommon, though. I remember Laich breaking his stick on a 5 on 3 before, and then blocking two shots as we killed it.

That’s a different one. Awesome one, but I particularly remember Laich doing it too.
It seems that sometimes there’s a sense that the 5 on 3 is just gonna get killed, and when it does, it’s huge momentum.

was that a couple of seasons ago? resulted in Laich breaking his ankle but not getting it treated?

It was great, but I think the all time best is still the SJS 5 on 3 kill against EDM. Two broken sticks.

Emily, unless it’s just me, the links for Clydeorama and Caps in Pictures don’t seem hot. Thanks for checking.
Happy Thanksgiving, all.

I will have to catch up on today’s links tomorrow as we prepare to head West. On this Thanksgiving, I’d like to give thanks to this community; for making me laugh, being informative and never (as best I can tell) using the term “athleticism”.
Cheers

Giving thanks for NHL 12’s uniform key being released (Even if I just found it today and it was released on the 21st).
Missing an OTOT. Oh well.
You know, I’m sure it was discussed to death yesterday, but I’m actually a fan of Ward getting scratched for missing a team meeting. Last year if I’d missed a team meeting, I’d have been suspended too.

Off to the Turkey portion of the Day. Best wishes to all the readers, commenters, and lurkers. I’m grateful to get to work with JP and the entire moditorial team. I’m grateful for all the people who write about hockey, take pictures of hockey, and post to teh internets about hockey. And I’m grateful I get to read and write about the Washington Capitals.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone here at Japers’. We are with the in laws in the rural, mountainous land of limited Internet, and no cell phone service. So I give thanks to the wonderful community of this incredible site, without whom I wouldn’t be able to get the particulars and best parts of the games we miss, such as last night’s. (We lost the radio signal just as the third period started). I am also thankful that Fehr got recognized by the Verizon crowd. He gave me many happy memories, especially at the WC.
love the avator ;)

I cheered Fehr when he was announced. Admit to being sad when his days with the Caps were over and sorry he had so many injury problems. The only Caps draftee from my elder daughter’s draft class, so to speak, who made it. (Caps having much better luck with my younger daughter’s draft class, 3 making it so far.)

I had found that particular picture on Facebook (but not on Neuvy’s page). I loved that picture and even used it as my desktop for a while but never shared with anyone since I figured it wasn’t released to the public domain.

I noticed this month that the toys being given away at Micky D’s are the Bakugan characters. One of the characters, Dan, bears a resemblance to the Ovi drawn by Rachel Cohen who has drawn for the Russian Machine Never Breaks blog.

From the latest entry in "NHL Players as kids:

Mike Green suffered a right groin strain late in the first period Nov. 11 at the New Jersey Devils. He took one power-play shift in the second but did not return after that. He hasn’t skated since. Asked if there was an update on Green, coach Bruce Boudreau said, "None."
Hmmm, let’s go back in the “two weeks ago” time machine:
BB 11/11: "It’s a different soreness," Boudreau said. "At least it’s not the ankle, so that’s good news. I’m pretty confident (it’s not serious). I talked to him already about it and it’s a day-to-day thing. Not a three-week day-to-day thing. It’s an actual day-to-day thing."
Or maybe it’s a three-week day-to-day thing. Or more.
Why do we even bother asking BB about injuries anymore?
