Had to give a friend my tickets for tonight’s game. Driving the family up to Manhattan for Thanksgiving. Not a good day to be doing that, but alas. Given traffic, I should make it by Arbor Day. =)

I know that “make it by Arbor Day” is a gross exaggeration but will the worsening of traffic eventually lead less families to want to travel for Thanksgiving? (Oh, are you married with kids? You’re making me feel old, Winterion, since you’re just a tad less than a year older than my first born.)

On “Which Alex is Killing the Team more”: Saw the link on the Post yesterday and didn’t listen. Looking forward to listening to that one as much as I’d look forward to a Parent Teacher Conference with a teacher in a class where your kid is doing very poorly and there’s even reports that the particular teacher hates your kid. This will always get a rec… funniest thing I’ve ever seen on the ice… well other than one time Joe Reekie was in a confrontation with an opponent (don’t remember who) and a teammate of the opponent was on hands an knees behind the chap having a chat with Reekie. Reekie gives him a push and just like the Three Stooges, over he goes.
Reekie got 2 minutes, with the referee laughing the entire trip to the scorer’s table.

Going to my second game of the season tonight (game one was Monday, I get to see the old Jets followed by the new Jets). I’m hoping for a Sasha siting. The one game I got to last year he dropped a hatty on the Bolts. Also hoping for an Ovie goal, he scored in the first 5 games I saw him play live (one of which was the goal from his back against Montreal after the spin-o-rama off the boards), and 8 of the first 9, but none in the last 4. But then again, given his season to date, I think we’re all hoping for an Ovie goal. What I’d like most of all, however, is another WIN.

Ah, sorry – still waking up. I meant the latter, actually. I was happy with the BB decision to bench him Monday. But given the fact that I only get to so many games in a year I’d like the chance to see him play tonight. If Sasha in the press box = another W, however, I’ll take the W.
by BradleyFightingVehicle on Nov 23, 2011 8:55 AM EST up reply actions
Gotta be the latter, as in he hopes Sasha shows up. It makes sense in the context of a prior dominant performance.

I know. ’Twas a joke.
And fwiw, benching Sasha again is a nuclear option. I think if he gets another healthy-scratch, he’ll have played his last game as a Cap.

Hey, Marek Malik averaged .05 goals per game in his career (slightly more than Sarge’s .03), and pulled out a ridiculous move, so why not Double Nickel? Oh yeah, because he’s not coordinated.
Honestly, if Schultz tried the Malik move, I can’t imagine he’d finish it upright.

Spin-o-rama, totally.
If Stecks got one, we can always hold out hope for Sarge. Sorta. And there’s also the chance of an 18-round shootout, too, so we got that going for us.

In the midst of all of this BB bashing and speculation about his job security, that Capital Outsiders link of Gabby gabbin’ is a reminder of why he’s such a lovable guy. Obviously, we’d all trade a lovable, ringless loser for a Lemaire-type stiff with some Cups, but I do have to say that BB is a charismatic speaker…very disarming
Whatever else BB is very comfortable with who he is. I found both clips hilarious. Loved his commentary about how differently he and Byslma were portrayed, especially at Christmas. Made me laugh. I seriously would love to see all the footage that was cut: Knuble with his sons at the hockey rink; BB with his kids in his home setting, not at the mall on the 24th.

I feel like this is a weak scratch. I get that Boudreau is going to use any opportunity he can to scratch someone (not named Ovechkin) and set the standard for “accountability,” but it’s not like Ward got nearly the leeway Semin did before he was scratched.
That being said, I understand why Boudreau made this choice – it just bothers me a bit, knowing we’ve all been late to work before, and the punishment isn’t “go home, you aren’t good enough to work here today.”
This is the NHL. A huge part of it involves being on time and ready to go. Players get scratched for being late/missing things all the time. If you aren’t there, you’re letting the rest of your team down.
The scratch seems entirely appropriate to me.
Proud member of the Popsicle Division of the Cupcake Conference.
I really don’t think BB is looking to scratch a guy like Ward. He seems like he’s good team guy and this is likely out of character for him.
The bigger question is whether the consequences of missing a team meeting were made clear to the players and whether such punishment has been handed out consistently if/when there have been any violations? If the answers are yes, then I have no problem with this. It seems harsh for a presumed first time offender, but if the punishment was made clear, then he needs to suffer the consequences.
And a pet peeve of mine is comparing “regular” jobs to professional athletics. They are not the same. However, I bet if your entire company had a mandatory strategy meeting and you overslept for it, you’d probably suffer some consequences.

Considering Ward said:
“I basically slept in, missed a team meeting. So I’ve got to pay the consequences of not playing,” Ward said. “I understand it’s part of the team rules. It’s written. I just made a mistake of sleeping in.”
it’s part of the written team rules, so I am thinking the punishment was known.
by vtcapsfan99 on Nov 23, 2011 12:28 PM EST up reply actions
Thanks. So if it’s written, then BB really has no choice but to enforce the consequences.

Just because it’s written doesn’t mean he has no choice but to enforce the consequences. History matters. I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t be happy getting a ticket for going 57 in a 55, even if “it’s written.”
Please, call me F&B.
Really? If he hands out team rules that say you will be scratched if you are late for a team meeting then I don’t see how, in the era of accountability, you can’t enforce that.
As for 57 in a 55. If the cop is pulling over everyone doing 57 in a 55, I’d have a hard time arguing it. If he picks me out as other whip by at 65, then I would have an issue.
So long as this written rule is appied consistently, then how can you argue against enforcing it?
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

Ovi’s reaction to Semin being scratched in CI:
"Of course he was upset, understand there’s nothing you can do," Alex Ovechkin said. "He’s big boy and he’s not small little kid — he’s not going to cry. But he’s right now back on the ice and I hope he’s going to play today…..I hope he’s going to play much better. I think he play well, he have chances but he didn’t score. It was just coach’s decision to bench him."
"I just tell him don’t think about it," Ovechkin said. "It’s going to be hard, but of course it’s hard to [sit] when you healthy and feel pretty good about yourself and you’re not playing. It’s pretty hard moment but it’s done. It was yesterday."
Ugh, it would appear Ovechkin seems to think that the reason Semin was benched was because he wasn’t scoring. He was benched because of constant penalties, subsequent tentativeness and lack of discipline to not make the same mistake over and over again (though several of those penalties have been soft/total BS). Semin would be out on the ice even if he wasn’t scoring, IF he was backchecking well and not taking a penalty a game. He’s still a huge threat and commands respect from the defense.
His advice to Semin should have been more along the lines of “hey, you have to be more careful with the stickwork because they are calling anything close on you”.
I think we overestimate some of the guy’s command with the English language sometimes. They’re going to give the most basic answers they can some of the time. It had been noted that Semin’s play would drop off and he’d be less involved after taking penalties at times in recent games as well. “Scoring” could be an easy way for him in English to mean not playing tentative, being involved and committed, etc.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

It’s difficult to parse full meaning when the speaker isn’t a native speaker. It is interpretive. So I am not sure he is making the points you think he is making. My take on his statement—that he hopes Semin plays much better but then goes on to say that he thinks he plays well but hasn’t buried his chances—is that he thinks Semin needs to do better with those penalty/stick work issues but that he also hopes he gets some goals. I really can’t imagine Ovi discussing stick work in detail—in English.

Anyone following Jets reporters on twitter? NHL.com At the Rink blog has this lineup, aka Eric Fehr as a healthy scratch, after mentioning his return in the article.
Andrew Ladd – Nik Antropov – Kyle Wellwood
Alexander Burmistrov – Bryan Little – Evander Kane
Tanner Glass – Jim Slater – Chris Thorburn
Jason Jaffray – Tim Stapleton – Blake Wheeler
Mark Stuart – Dustin Byfuglien
Johnny Oduya – Zach Bogosian
Ron Hainsey – Mark Flood

"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
I am anxious for the CAPS to show some hustle, cohesiveness, and determination tonight. As such, I think the most interesting issue will not be Semin’s reaction or his performance (Semin will be Semin regardless), but instead, whether Ovi: a) has a little fire in his belly, and b) if so, whether the rest of the team follows its captain with a complete game.
Me too. But I thought they were showing those things in the last game as well.
