At the moment, Boyd Gordon has as many points as Alexander Semin (9), as many goals as Brooks Laich (3), more game-winning goals (1) than Alex Ovechkin (0), has a better shooting percentage (11.1%) than Mike Knuble (7.4%), has more than twice as many blocked shots (31) as any Caps forward (Laich: 14), and would rank third on the Caps in plus-minus (+7).

OK, another thought experiment. Let’s say Boudreau came into this year with a new behind-the-scenes accountability. Mightn’t the team go through an adjustment period as the new focus is imposed? Mightn’t that look a lot like what we’re seeing right now?
I think it’s always useful to remember that we don’t know what’s happening in the room. The test is, as always, in the games.
"Fais gros comme moi!" - Alex Ovechkin
I can’t remember the last time I was this uptight about going to a game.
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
I can’t remember the last time I was hesitant to buy cheap tickets for a game because I was fearful they might lose and it’s easier to be annoyed and mopey about a loss at home rather than on the lawless wasteland that is the Gallery Place metro station.
I’m not looking forward to the 4-3 loss tonight whether I watch at home, at a bar or at the game.
Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:
Leave me here, and when you want me, sound upon the bugle-horn
I’m not sure I follow. But I will say that when you have a guy who’s been here roughly six minutes (Brouwer) saying, “Sometimes I think we did maybe too good of a job of moving on; we didn’t learn from our mistakes from the game before,” that’s about as close to “there are guys who just don’t fucking listen” as anyone’s going to come. If everyone was on the same page behind-the-scenes, I don’t think you get quotes like that or team meetings and the like.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
by J.P. on Nov 21, 2011 8:52 AM EST up reply actions 6 recs
I guess what I’m getting at, is that for 3 and a half years, those same guys haven’t been listening and the team’s found a way to have regular season success working around that fact.
If this year, Boudreau isn’t accepting that anymore, mightn’t you expect some rough games at the beginning as the team stops just working around the guys who are not on the same page and starts to integrate them, kicking and screaming, into a system that requires them to be on the same page? You might lose a few games ugly as you stop enabling them and working around them.
"Fais gros comme moi!" - Alex Ovechkin
by Gould Old Days on Nov 21, 2011 9:02 AM EST up reply actions
That makes some sense, but I’d expect to see more on-ice signs that these guys are freelancing less or at least trying to commit to the system. For example, I’d accept Ovechkin skating his ass off but going to the wrong spot on a backcheck under the auspices of “it’s new to him” (remarkable as that would be unto itself). But when we see him not in the right spot seemingly because of effort, it rings a little hollow.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
JP you’ve got a young kid, I think it’s the exact same as when a kid fights the rules in whatever way they can. How else is he going to be rebellious other than to not put in the effort to be in the right spots and not buy in when on ice? If BB can stay consistent and show that they won’t get away with this then they should come around and buy in.
Well, my kid can’t get me fired.
If AO doesn’t take to Boudreau’s changes, it’s because he doesn’t believe in Boudreau or he doesn’t place a high priority on winning.
And what does it say about the situation when the guy with the “C” on his sweater might need to “be rebellious”?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I think it says more about the guy with the C then it does about anyone else. I think Friedman’s take of getting BB, AO and GMGM in a room and working it out is absolutely what needs to happen.
AOis clearly a world class talent and isn’t going anywhere
BB is a good coach and there’s nobody immediately available that I would consider an upgrade (argue if you like but this isn’t by accident)
He recorded more wins (184) in his first 300 NHL games than any coach in NHL history and his .679 career winning percentage is the best of any coach in league history with at least 250 games of experience.
GMGM is making the changes needed and I think he’s done a great job.
So nobody is going anywhere. Sit down and work this shit out because AO and BB are to talented to not make this work.
Regular season success only counts when there is postseason success. Andy Reid has a better winning % than Chuck Noll, but no one really ever argues that Andy Reid is a better coach than Chuck Noll.
Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:
Leave me here, and when you want me, sound upon the bugle-horn

Yea, but how many of those wins came by the gimmick? Counting his wins in the shootout to give him the most wins in his first 300 is akin to counting Marty B’s shootout wins when he passed Roy for total wins.
Just sayin’.

you play within the rules that you’re given. Who is to say that those games would not have been won in a traditional overtime?

You have three possible outcomes: win, lose, tie. Doubt that all of the shootout wins would have ended as Caps wins in the old format.
I understand that you play within the rules you’re given, but to give Bruce the mantle of champ with most wins over first 300 games without considering the gimick wins really does slant the playing field his direction.
"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro"
08/09 – 4 SO wins
09/10 – 5 SO wins
10/11 – 5 SO wins
in 07/08 there were 4 SO wins but I don’t know the breakdown before/after the coaching change so I’ll just split it and give him 2 in 07/08.
I searched but I cannot find a listing of the current “wins at 300 games” list of NHL coaches.

For example, I’d accept Ovechkin skating his ass off but going to the wrong spot on a backcheck under the auspices of "it’s new to him" (remarkable as that would be unto itself). But when we see him not in the right spot seemingly because of effort, it rings a little hollow.
And this is making me think more about it too, in light of TEB’s piece. Let’s say you’re Boudreau. You’ve told other players to “cover for” Ovechkin in the past. And now you’re telling them not to cover for the guy anymore because he has to play like everyone else. And, of course, you’re telling him the same thing, but he’s just not doing it. He’s not adjusting. So there’s this huge defensive hole out there that others used to fill that they’re not filling anymore. And everyone’s despirited and demoralized about the whole situation.
Wouldn’t that look a lot like the last two games? What if you throw in the possibility that Ovechkin is honestly making an effort, but having a real hard time and getting frustrated and angry that he can’t play basic hockey as well as a 3rd liner anymore with his new responsibilities.
I’m not saying this is how it is. I’m saying this is consistent with what we’re seeing. But other things are consistent with that too. We just don’t know.
But if this is the situation, then there’s reason for hope. I honestly believe that Ovechkin is smart enough and dedicated enough to change his game. He desperately wants to win. But change is hard for anyone. And it can look real ugly when it’s happening.

Do you think it would be easier for OV to adjust (particularly defensively) if he were having more success offensively? Perhaps the resistance is in struggling to get back his scoring mojo. I would think that if you’re used to the success that he’s had in scoring that not having it would kinda overshadow almost everything else. He’s thinking about it all the time, and that’s pushing the other stuff to the side in is head.

I agree with this. I think you’ve got some players (cough, Alex yeah both of you, cough) who have been coddled and never really been challenged and I’m guessing they are not particularly happy about the sudden set of rules and restrictions being placed on them.
They’ve been allowed to get away with everything and anything for 4 years now. So that’s on Bruce and the coaching staff. On the other hand—do they want to win, or do they want to keep doing what’s comfortable?
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$403.25!
I don’t disagree with that at all. I think BB has realized that he’s gone as far as he can with them in the happy go lucky scheme and is making changes to try to correct it and is getting resistance. As long as he stays consistent I think it will turn around and we will see a better team for it.
I hope so, I really do. Suddenly, I feel like there’s a handful of guys on this team holding everyone back. The other night, I was all ready to buy into the “Time for a coaching change” line of thinking. Now…..I’m not so sure as I was Saturday.

I’m surprised more isn’t being made of the Tarik piece on the disconnect between Ovie and Boudreau. This is a HUGE story. A lot of folks have speculated on it but never before have we seen a reporter matter-of-factly state that Ovechkin is being told to make certain adjustments on defense, in the offensive zone and that he’s simply ignoring them.
Boudreau’s job security aside, this is a huge indictment on the Captain.
Agreed on all counts (and I thought the piece a little bombastic).

Coach Bruce Boudreau must reconnect with the Washington Capitals’ locker room, beginning with Monday’s game against the Phoenix Coyotes. That process starts with getting on the same page as Alex Ovechkin.
He lost me right there. Reconnect with the room? Are they disconnected, or is the problem with getting some players — the ones who have to be the best ones every night — “connected?”
And if might be splitting semantic hairs, but Boudreau needs to get on the same page as Ovechkin? The way it’s stated, Ovechkin is on the “right” page, and Boudreau needs to get there. I’m guessing there is a page out there on which both of them had better find themselves, or else Boudreau will be out of a job (not for long), and Ovechkin could diminsh both his legacy and his chances for ever winning a Stanley Cup (after all, he’s not getting younger any more than his fellow travelers are).
Sometimes I detect a little “bomb throwing” in his style.

If this is a longstanding issue and GMGM doesn’t believe that Boudreau is at fault for not finding the right button to push then McPhee should have done more from an acquisitions standpoint to further strengthen the surrounding cast. Brouwer & Ward have been fairly solid and all but they still lack the skilled consistency and experience of a savvy veteran presence like a Fedorov. Those players aren’t easy to find but pilling on more youth and depth players isn’t going to work…not if your biggest developmental experiment is failing. Nothing against Brouwer & Ward but the top six remains pretty off from a consistency standpoint and that type of presence would be really helpful.
Really? We’re drawing the conclusion after not even 25% of the season that the off-season acquisitions weren’t sufficient?

I also found it in a Whyno article I linked in the clips comments thread last night. Whyno article was dated Nov. 18, just after Jets game.
Just read the Whyno article, and—without trying to split hairs here—it’s important to note that the way he wrote that section of the piece, he doesn’t quote Ovechkin on this point. Whyno is inferring here.
Alex Ovechkin has spent much of this season on the left wall and moving around the offensive zone, rather than at the point. Boudreau said it’s an effort to make Ovechkin harder to defend.
But Ovechkin feels more comfortable out there because of his experience. Boudreau’s willing to move guys around until something works. [emphasis mine].
Maybe I need more coffee.

I saw that and wondered, but given that Joe B made a reference that Ovi said it during a game, I think you can assume that Whyno didn’t make that up on his own.

Right. When Whyno, Joe B and Tarik all mention it—in the space of a few days—I guess I can buy that something was said. But it seems very counter-intuitive, and so I am searching for context.

Another reason why the Caps made a big mistake making AO captain. He’s not Sidney Crosby, he’s not Jonathan Toews, he’s not Mike Richards….
Well considering the Flyers feelings on Mike Richards, he could easily be Richards

just don’t understand the logic behind giving him the C. What about Ovechkin shows leadership. Maybe leadership by example but that’s it.
Ovi is the franchise. It would be really hard to not give him the C. And they even did it after Crosby got his. It might have been even more distracting if they passed over Ovi. Could you imagine the “No trust in $10m Ovechkin” stories that would have popped out if they chose anyone else?

Crosby, I think, wasn’t a great captain his first year. Maybe by his fourth.

I don’t like the part about AO’s ice time. He says that AO hasn’t publicly complained, but then goes on to speculate that it’s an issue causing the rift anyway. I know TEB has his connections, so maybe he heard it way off the record, but that part rubs me the wrong way. If this is all true, it’s a huge problem, but I’m still a little concerned this is just narrative.
Please, call me F&B.
I think I’d like Ovechkin to be upset at less ice time. Wouldn’t it be worse if he didn’t mind reduced ice time at all? The way TEB wrote it (“hard to believe he’s fine with skating 18 minutes 46 seconds per game”) is really how I’d want it to be.
by kingbonehead on Nov 21, 2011 12:12 PM EST up reply actions
Sure, but there’s still a pretty wide gulf from there to a rift with the coach.
Please, call me F&B.
I really disliked that part too. Pure speculation. And of course Ovi wants more ice time, every player does. But does that want become a distracting problem? So far we haven’t seen any signs that it has.
Proud member of the Popsicle Division of the Cupcake Conference.
I’m surprised more isn’t being made of the Tarik piece on the disconnect between Ovie and Boudreau.
Count me in the camp as well. At first I thought Tarik was being Tarik yesterday and dismissed it … sort of. But who else in the local press has reported things as if they were factual in the manner Tarik did?

Was scratching Semin now the right strategy? If I was going to scratch him, I might do it after a game where he legitimately earned his penalties. Boudreau also said Semin is working hard and he cares, so I don’t really know what to think about his handling of Semin. Why would you scratch someone who you thought was working hard and wasn’t having scoring luck?

I’ve occasionally seen someone say how much they learned by watching from the press box for a game. Sure, being a healthy scratch would be a punishment, but cushion it with, “I want to you watch how the game unfolds from up there” and maybe there’s value.

If he plays a typical Boyd Gordon game, most may not realize he’s playing for awhile :)
I’m a fan, think most people appreciated his game or were indifferent. My guess is positive if anything.
Given his tenure with the team, I expect the Caps to mention it during a break in the first period as they have with some other players returning and Nashville recently did with Ward, but nothing more than that, if they do that.
I hope there is at least a small recognition. I wish he were still here but, hey, if Phoenix was throwing crazy money art me, I’d go to Phoenix, too.

Cap situation – I’m struggling to understand why the beat writers thought there was a possible cap issue with the Orlov recall.
So as is being reported, CapGeek is estimating about 300,000 under cap utilizing 100% of Poti’s cap hit as LTIR space. The GP bonused cap hits being removed are less than 300,000.
Anyway, in simple terms, if the way the mechanics work 100% of Poti’s cap hit can be utilized now even though at the time he was placed on LTIR they weren’t in need of all 100%, which was my assumption, they have room.
Also, Beagle has already missed the 24 days and 10GP required to return after being on LTIR so they have his cap hit to work with, too, in the short-term. Last game played was 10/13.
(not just venting, I actually worked this up yesterday and mentioned it to a couple of people via email, just seems like the time to post with Whyno’s newest blog entry)
Also, Green’s clock re-set when he played in the 11/11 game. IF and I doubt they’d to it at this point, IF he was placed on LTIR, 10 games and 24 days would mean 12/7 would be the first game he’d be eligible to return.
I’m getting the same numbers that you are.
The most likely scenario, to me at least, is the beat writers not being 100% familiar with the ins and outs of the cap. When Whyno uses phrases like, “With Tom Poti’s $2.875 million hit not counting because of long-term injured reserve” (emphasis added) it gives me the impression that they know enough to function, but get into trouble when we’re looking at very tight-fitting puzzle pieces.

Grubauer won 2 games this weekend, his record is now:
8W, 1L, 1SOL
GAA: 1.59
Save Percentage: .945
He leads the ECHL in GAA and save percentage. Tied for second in wins.
Also, the beat writer (Miller) and some diehard fans have posted a number of very positive comments about his play, no surprise.
Here’s the latest blog entry by Miller.
Lucky for Phillipp he was playing a team this weekend whose goaltender was out of work this time last week.

I’m more focused on the reviews of his play and his stats; also, comments about rebound control, confidence, etc.; yes, Sauer was in goal for Gwinnett, including the win on Friday night (Machesney in goal for the Stingrays) in Gwinnett before the two teams traveled to Charleston for the other 2 games of the 3 in 3.
(and to Sydtron’s comment below, yes, Grubauer missed the end of the season in the OHL (Kingston) due to mono. He played in 38 games last season, but his last game was in early February.)
As you should be. I was just throwing the tidbit in for good measure. If it had been any other ECHL team but Gwinnett I wouldn’t have had a clue who he faced.

Chris Clark released from his PTO with AHL Providence (as reported on twitter and shown in the AHL transactions.) He played 6 games. Link to stats
Curious if this is it or if he’s getting ready to sign a contract with a team.
Of note, Providence plays at Hershey Wed. night.
how exactly does an in-season PTO work? Did Clark get his expenses covered during that time, but no other compensation?
I do hope he lands somewhere, with a contract.
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$403.25!
The contract is for a salary, pro-rated, from what I understand pro-rated on a daily rate. The AHL minimum salary for this season is 39,000 USD and for ECHL contract recalls loaned to AHL the minimum (or maybe that’s a set number? is $31,500, but I assume Clark was playing for more than that amount pro-rated. They sign a contract for a PTO of up to 25 games; they can sign another one once the 25 games by the team are up, it does happen from time to time.
Transportation to the team, plus some expenses are covered. Once there, per diem’s like other players, as I understand it when team is on the road.

Orlov – I asked Leone if Orlov had been playing on the left side recently because last year and earlier this season he was primarily playing on the right side (as a lefty shot) and there had been a one game experiment early in the season where they put him on the left and switched back after only 1 game. Was glad to hear he played on the left side in the most recent Hershey games in a pairing with Flemming.

Glad to see him up, although I am sorry circumstances require it. He really can’t be worse than Erskine or Hammer at this point in terms odd man rushes since that seems to be the one major criticism of him. I hope he doesn’t replace Sarge because, although he is not playing great now, he at least has more of an upside than Hamr and Erskine. Actually, I am worried most about Carlson. He, too, is having an off-year. I was hoping he would have stepped up more in Greener’s absence.
