What I don’t get is releasing All-Stars ballots with between 15-18% of the season complete, Also how the hell is Crosby an all-star when nobody knows when he will play. I realize he is an all-world talent but isn’t the point of this supposed to be who’s the best THIS season? If your argument is “wouldn’t you take Sid when he comes back over Tyler Seguin” my answer is “Not until he can prove he’s healthy ask me again in a few months.” Same for Marc Staal, if you haven’t played this season you are not an all-star, sorry.

Me either, but it’s the only way to have an All Star game at the halfway point.
Also how the hell is Crosby an all-star when nobody knows when he will play.
I am curious to see how many votes he gets.

Great choices, Neil. I haven’t totally decided on who all my choices are going to be. Need to do more research. But Kessel and Backstrom are definitely two of my forward choices. I’m also with Beaker in that the balloting is starting way too soon in the season.
I am also not voting for guys like Crosby or Marc Staal, who’ve been out for the entire year.

Line Changes
Since Nick has more points than anyone, does that make the second line with him, Semin and Laich the new first line? Didn’t think he looked too happy in practice yesterday, hope the points keep coming on this line.
Not only Nick, but haven’t all of Ovie’s goals been passes from 19?

Rules for how to determine which line is what on the Caps:
1) If Ovi is on the line, it is the top line, regardless of who else is on the line.
2) If Semin is on the line, it is the second line unless: a) Rule 1 applies; b)Semin is in serious trouble with the coach); or c) Ovi is out. If condition c applies, it is the first line.

Someone else also was a +1 in the 5-2 loss to the Stars. You know, the guy who scored the first goal for the Caps and was not on the ice for any goals against. The guy with 2 tripping penalties who only skated 2, I mean 3, shifts in the 3rd. The guy who’s in a “dark period.” He must be Barnabas Collins.

This brings up an issue I’ve wondered about though. His official stat was +1, but he was in the box for a goal against. I’ve often thought that if a player is in the box for a goal against due to his own penalty, as opposed to a bench minor or serving for someone else, then the goal should count in the +/-. What do you think? On the other side, though, are PPGs. In this case, Semin scored a PPG and was on the ice for another ES goal for, so if you account for both the GA and the PPG, it’s still +1. I often wonder about how often a player is in the box when his team is scored against. Is that particular stat kept?
Are you not entertained?
I think it counts for him being in the doghouse, which is worse, isn’t it? However, I get the impression that doghouse is much larger in the fanbase as a whole than it is with the coach. Sure sounds like Bruce is trying the “catch more flies with honey” approach with him.
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
Yes, he does need to reduce the penalties, no argument there. Would love to be the proverbial fly on the wall in those video sessions. I was wondering if there was a type of drill just for him where he has to go 1-on-1 with a puck carrier, say Nicky who’s protective or MoJo who’s speedy, without a stick so that he has to really skate to keep up and use his body to disrupt the carrier so that he focuses on keeping his legs moving and not reaching. When I watch him sometimes it’s almost as if he is so focused on getting ready to use his stick that he forgets to keep skating. I wonder if he can walk and chew gum at the same time or rub his stomach and pat his head simultaneously.
Are you not entertained?
That probably is the problem. The guy can focus so much on the results and not the process. I would not be surprised if his “brain type” is similar to that of the proverbial absent minded professor. He did start playing sports at an early enough age to acquire the requisite motor skills to be a good hockey player as well as in soccer. But he can look so awkward at times in falling.

I have always thought this should be the case.
Terrifically juvenile.
Would you give him the +1 for a short-handed goal as well then?
"A picture is worth a thousand words. For moving pictures we manage to shorten it to one or two."
When he’s in the box? No. If you’re on the ice when a shorty is scored you do get a +1 I believe.

Ah, the old fashioned home-and-home series. Too bad these are disappearing.
You tried your best and failed miserably. The lesson is "Never Try."
All right, armchair GMGMs. After last night’s debacle between the Blue Jackets and the Blackhawks, Scott Howson comes to you and says “I want Michal Neuvirth. But I’m not trading any of Nash, Carter, Wisniewski, or Ryan Johansen. And I’m willing to part with a first, but if we’re in the bottom ten this year, you’re getting next year’s first.”
What do you ask for in return?

I’d offer him Holtby for this year’s first, regardless of where Columbus finishes. Neuvy’s off-limits to me.
I’d think if they were gonna go after a goalie, it would be Nabokov.
by Murshawursha on Nov 11, 2011 9:21 AM EST up reply actions
But would Nabby waive his “No Trade Clause” for Columbus? In fact, last night’s rumor in the Twitterverse was that Nabby was getting traded to Columbus but that didn’t happen.

I wasn’t aware he had a NTC… Yeah, seems unlikely in that case.
by Murshawursha on Nov 11, 2011 9:29 AM EST up reply actions
He signed the contract with the To Trade Clause since he had agreed to ti with the Red Wings but had to pass through waivers before he could join Detroit which obviously didn’t happen.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
Nabokov’s made no secret of the fact that he wants off the Island and the Isles have made no secret of the fact that they don’t want a three-headed goalie situation. That NTC is getting waived the moment they can move him somewhere he’s OK with being.
Reporter: "What’s your Mom’s birthday?"
Tortorella: "I have no idea."
Yeah, but who the hell wants to hop onto the train wreck that is Columbus as it’s careening off the track?
by Murshawursha on Nov 11, 2011 9:56 AM EST up reply actions
Seeing as Vokoun is on a one year deal and we can’t be sure Holtby will be ready next year, he’d have to do quite a bit better than that to pry Neuvirth away. I don’t think I’d really want a protected first from him, unless it was two protected firsts. I don’t think they’d give up two firsts, so now it’s a protected first and a top-end asset. They already took Johansen off the table, so I guess that leaves John Moore, Boone Jenner, and Cody Goloubef as prospects I might be interested in. Not sure they’d move those guys (and I’m not even sure how excited I’d be for Goloubef at this point).
Please, call me F&B.
CBJ is a lock for the bottom 10 this year, so it’s essentially next years first. I’d ask about Vermette.

Yeah, I added that proviso about protecting the first because there’s no way Howson’s going to trade the potential first overall pick for a goalie with under 100 games of NHL experience.
Vermette might be a conversation starter. I might also ask about Umberger.

I’d tell him no deal. If we’re trading Neuvy, we’d better be getting something great in return. I’d give him Holtby if he really wants a goalie.
My mind is all twisted like a peanut.
Mason’s back-up is a young player that they like.
The thing you have to remember about Steve Mason is that he’s only 23 (the same age as Neuvirth).
I can’t see Howson queuing up again for another fleecing at the hands of McPhee, frankly.
Cross check and all call.
by bigonetimer on Nov 11, 2011 11:07 AM EST up reply actions
One, there’s no way the Caps can trade Neuvy this year. Holtby wasn’t ready for the NHL last year and he’s looked worse this year. There is no other backup.
Second, even if the Caps had a capable backup other than Neuvy, the offer would have to start with one of the names that are off limits on your list.
That would be a non-starter in my book.

SO… How does “Southeast Division Leader Florida Panthers” sound to everybody?
This season is freaking nuts so far. I’m beginning to worry it’s a sign of the apocalypse.
Well, didn’t you know that the Apocalypse is scheduled for next year?
But the Caps do have 2 games in hand against the Panthers. (And, is it my imagination or did the Panthers win a Caps style game last night, as in Caps of 2 years ago? Got off to 4 goal lead, then gave up 2 goals in the 3rd and getting their fans nervous, and getting the empty netter near the end to ice it. Theo was also in goal.) The Panthers are going to a more “red” theme as well and have set up a “Red Zone” seating area for Panthers fans only.

During Bradley’s phoner where JustDoesntCare-gate originated, he mentioned that with the guys Tallon had brought in, there were vets there who had gotten used to winning and wanted to bring that into the room in Sunrise. Granted, how that’s changed with Booth being traded and Weiss still around remains to be seen (and we can agree and/or debate the usefulness of vets like Campbell and Jovo until the cows come home), but for whatever any of it is worth 15 games into the year.

As much crap as Campbell gets for his contract, I think the guy is actually a top-tier puck-moving defenseman. I’d agree the ship has probably sailed for Jovo though; he’s definitely on the downswing of his career.

here’s Whyno’s coloumn
First, the lineup: Jeff Schultz and John Erskine seem to be the leading candidates to be the healthy scratch. Coach Bruce Boudreau wasn’t showing his hand.
"It always makes it a hard choice when you’ve got seven established NHL defensemen," he said. "But we’ll figure it out."
If Karl Alzner and John Carlson are reunited, Wideman would skate with Erskine or Schultz, with Green going back to skating with Roman Hamrlik. Hamrlik said it wouldn’t be that hard to go from playing with Carlson or Wideman back to Green.
And the All-Star defenseman knows he and Hamrlik work well together.
Not sure why either Schultz or Erks should sit before Hamr but I am not the coach. I guess the subtle point is that Hamr can play well, but only with Green…?
Regardless, glad to have Greenie back.
He didn’t play well with Green. Green is better defensively than Wideman though, and it’s probably best to reunite Carlznerson.
My mind is all twisted like a peanut.
If what you say is true about Hamr not playing well with Green, who does he play well with because he has been atrocious in Green’s absence?
I’m OK with Calzner getting back together and Wideman with Sarge, say.
So far, Hamrlik hasn’t played well with anyone. I think Green is the best partner for him regardless. Carlson-Alzner is just a great pair, so they should be together. Hamrlik-Schultz/Erskine is a disaster waiting to happen, so that leaves Green or Wideman. I’d say Green, due to his better defensive abilities. And that leaves Wideman-Schultz/Erskine – I’d vote Schultz. My real preference would be to sit Hamrlik and play Green-Schultz, Wideman-Erskine – but that will never happen.
My mind is all twisted like a peanut.
Totally agree. I am hoping that Hamr will pick it up soon otherwise GMGM has been Poti’d again with that 2 year contract. Maybe a little BB “accountability” and pine will goose him a bit.
In any case, since Big John has looked pretty good so far, I would actually like to see a full rotation of 7 D even when everyone is healthy, especially towards the end of the season in preparation for the playoffs. Collins/Orlov could be the ‘call-ups’, but let’s be sure Erskine sees plenty of ice time.
Hopefully he is totally fully 100% healed, but assuming that is the case fantastic news. Green’s breakout passes are irreplaceable.
