Bold prediction: Bruce Boudreau does not last the season as head coach.

He survived last regular season, chances are he’ll survive this regular season. Playoffs are all he is being judged on, IMO.

Couldn’t agree more. There’s nothing he can or can’t prove in the regular season.

That said, if it becomes clear at some point that he’s “lost the team” (as was the case with Hanlon), they’ll make a change.

Seems to me the only believable scenario for making a change is probably the All-Star game, if the team is out of the top-eight.

by ThePeerless on Oct 5, 2011 7:46 AM EDT up reply actions

What if the team is in, say, 7th at the ASB, and mired in a 2-8-2 stretch (or something like that)? What if Backstrom doesn’t have the bounce-back season that everyone expects? What if Semin is the same ol’ Semin?

Coaches who get to have players on their roster with the talent that the Caps have and don’t succeed usually don’t have that long of a leash. This isn’t Lindy Ruff and a Sabres team that plays above its talent. This is a team with Ovechkin, Backstrom, Semin, and Green.

I’m not saying that Boudreau should or deserves to be fired. But I do think that it’s a very good possibility this year, whether during the season or after.

Agreed, I just agree with most here that the Boudreau call is a little silly. I could imagine scenarios where it COULD happen…but in reality he can only be judged on postseason results now.

Certainly, [Ovechkin will] need to be significantly better than he was last season. Ovechkin’s 85-point output was the lowest of his six-season NHL career. After scoring at least 50 goals in each of the three previous seasons, including 65 during the 2007-08 campaign, Ovechkin lit the red lamp on a meager 32 occasions during 2010-11.

32 goals is “meager” now? Noted.

Oh and I asked this last night, but I wonder if Burke made the trade knowing Betts was on waivers…because if he did why not just claim Betts and spend less dollars plus keep the pick. “Where do you look at Ovechkin and say, ‘Wow, he’s really improved at that in five years?’” Getting product endorsements? [CBC (Friedman)]

Assists. He’s a better passer than he was. The offensive output of his line dropped, the team’s PP production plummeted, but his assists haven’t.

Flat assist totals for him over his career actually mean that he’s getting better at that aspect of the game, when you take into account everything else that’s going on. It’s one of the reasons I like 8/90 on a line together — Johansson’s a better goal scorer and space-maker than playmaker.

Obviously primary assists/60 at even strength isn’t a great proxy for improved playmaking ability, but if it were, Ovi’s gone .97, .81, 1.3, 1.08 over the past four regular seasons. That’s obviously a generally upward trend, and when you consider the team’s ES production dropping, that’s impressive, I suppose. But add in that his SOG totals have dropped so much – meaning fewer opportunities for primary helpers on rebounds of his SOGs – maybe that’s even more impressive.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Oct 5, 2011 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions

The biggest improvement that is regularly overlooked by the media is Ovie’s command of English. It has allowed him to communicate more on the ice and off it. He was aware of the roles he would be expected to take on for the Caps and the NHL because of his talent and so he improved his ability to speak the language.

The media doesn’t give him enough credit in that area although they are a group that benefits the most.

The other media darling learned English from the cradle.

The dude is one solid check away from retirement, and as much as that sucks for hockey, the fact is that someone so fragile has no place in the current conversation about the game’s best player. Was he the best on Jan. 1 of last year? Perhaps. Is he right now, on IR and with no timetable to return? Says here that he isn’t, and shouldn’t be.

Cross check and all call.

The dude is one solid check away from retirement, and as much as that sucks for hockey, the fact is that someone so fragile has no place in the current conversation about the game’s best player.

I agree with the first sentence, though I disagree with the second.

Part of Friedman’s reasoning as to why Sid is the best player in the game is that he compulsively works on aspects of his game during the offseason, and fine-tunes other things that he already does well. Every off-season is a chance for him to hone his skills. However, Sid’s been seriously limited in his off-season workouts since his concussion, and has only recently started training on ice.

How good is Sidney Crosby going to be this year without a full offseason of training? And if the Penguins falter at all early this season, how much pressure is he going to face to get back in the lineup again?

As for Crosby’s fragility, I don’t think he’s going to be one solid check away from retirement. There are plenty of players who have missed significant time with concussions and have come back to have long, productive careers. Each player is different.

Tortorella: Can I get another question? I went in here in a pretty good mood today, too.
Larry Brooks: So did I.
Tortorella: Well, you obviously f***ed that up, didn't you?

by Wheeler on Oct 5, 2011 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I understand Friedman’s reasoning for his opinion that Sid was—was—the best. I’m selling that Sid is currently the best. Until the guy gets back on the ice and shows he can stay there, he just shouldn’t be #1 over Ovechkin or anyone else worthy of the conversation.

There are plenty of players who have missed significant time with concussions and have come back to have long, productive careers. Each player is different.

Of course. And perhaps the one solid check estimation was over the top, but it could be something even less severe that ends his career prematurely, and that goes for any severely concussed player. With the number of head shots the Pens personally deliver to Mike Green every game, it’s easy to make the same connection for 52, frankly.

Cross check and all call.

by bigonetimer on Oct 5, 2011 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not sure “plenty” is too accurate. There are some, but I think the list of guys that didn’t recover after an 8 month lay-off is probably bigger than the list of guys that did.

And I don’t think Green is in the same category, simply based on time missed.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

Friedman put a bad taste in my mouth last night too. I think it was because he was saying that Ovi is both “to blame” and “not to blame” for the team’s playoff failures. And that he seems to have written him off. I would also have liked a little specificity as to how Ovi is suppose to improve his game.

by capsyoungguns on Oct 5, 2011 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m with you on everything but “not to take anything from Staal”

And I completely agree with your last paragraph… and I’m not sure Friedman would disagree. He clearly notes:

That does not mean it cannot happen. The guy just turned 26 and has years of superb hockey remaining. But it’s time for him to become as single-minded as his elite peers, to modify his game and reach his full potential.

There are positive signs. He was notorious for arriving in North America just before training camp, which cut down his skating time because he had commercial and NHL commitments upon returning. This year, he came back earlier.

I think falling off the cliff would be a little harsh. 114 points in 110 games in the last 2 seasons isn’t exactly terrible. And the year before that, 113 in 82. If he stays healthy, I don’t see why those #s wouldn’t lend themselves to a 100 point season this year.

I worry every time a guy has ACL surgery. There seems (seems—not that I have fancystats to back this up) to be a higher rate of re-injury among hockey players than in other sports. And while he has looked great in the pre-season, it’s fairly typical for guys to struggle to return to their pre-injury level over the course of the long season. Start hot, finish cold.

While we wait for local hockey to start, here’s some overseas/prospect hockey. In nine games, Evgeny Kuznetsov has six goals – and zero assists. You can see him scoring the fourth Tractor goal (in a 4-3 victory over Barys Astana) here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=W4vViadlF74

And I took a look at the QMJHL standings yesterday – leading the Q standings, by a lot, with an 8-1-0-0 record – Sam Carrier’s Baie-Comeau Drakkar. They are undefeated since he returned to the team and in 5 games he’s 2-5-7, +6. The Drakkar is also leading the league in goals against, with only 19 goals allowed.

He’s improved defensively… but the bar was set awfully low to begin with. And while he often/usually goes along with the system, there are certainly not-infrequent occasions on which he freelances (not sure how much of an improvement he’s made there – I didn’t think he was too system-averse to begin with). And I’ll defer on the leadership point – I have no real insight into that (though as he is reportedly more of a “lead by example” guy, I obviously didn’t care much for Game 5 vs. MTL… which admittedly is 16 months ago or whatever). Even granting those, I don’t know that any of them has been a “Wow” improvement.

I agree wholeheartedly that the massive point totals he’s accumulated, while incredibly impressive, don’t tell the whole story.

What he’s asking is at what skill has Ovechkin greatly improved over the course of his five years in the League? I’ll maintain that it’s a valid question, even if it seems to fail to acknowledge that there’s a lot less room for improvement for a guy who is close to, if not at the very top of his profession than for nearly everyone else on the planet.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Oct 5, 2011 9:03 AM EDT up reply actions

My main problem with Friedman’s assertion is he doesn’t provide any examples, other than just vaguely suggest he “needs to improve” in some undefined way. Which to me is an underhanded way of saying “you should be more like Crosby” or “why isn’t your name on the Cup.”

Capitals goal scored by #22, Mike...

by KNUUUUUUUUUUBLE on Oct 5, 2011 9:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, it definitely stinks of “why isn’t your name on the Cup,” though EF expressly notes that “It is ludicrous to solely blame him for Washington’s failure to carry the Cup, so far.”

And frankly, let’s take a closer look at this:

“Look at the players taken first overall right around him: Marc-Andre Fleury (2003), Crosby (2005) and Patrick Kane (2007) have already been critical components of a Stanley Cup champion team. Eric Staal, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Malkin and Jonathan Toews are franchise players of Ovechkin’s generation who’ve done it, too. And Stamkos also trends upward.”

So the first two guys on the list play with each other (hey now) and another “franchise player,” the third guy is a teammate of another “franchise player,” and two of his other “franchise players” are teammates. (The last one, Eric Staal, is overrated and jammed into this narrative.) So before killing the guy for not winning a Cup or improving, why not acknowledge that he doesn’t have the high-end supporting cast that the others on the list (that you made) do?

I grew up watching Orr and Gretzky and they always freelanced because they were just so much better than everyone else. If I’ve got a superstar, I don’t want him feeling so constrained that he can never stray from the system. It’s like taking Secretariat and tying him to a wagon. I want a guy with superior talent to try things third-liners can’t and shouldn’t. If he fails every now and then so be it.

Orr and Gretzky played in a much more structured era. If AO was blowing away the field free-lancing we wouldn’t be having this discussion. He’s not.

Sid started with a low bar for FO, and became not just credible, but one of the best in the game. When AO takes a weakness and makes it a strength, then you can draw those comparisons, IMO. I maintain that we haven’t seen any significant modifications to his game. If I could make one modification to his game, it would have nothing to do with D. It would just be to cycle the puck more. It seems as though he thinks cycling is a waste of time, even though that’s when his best shifts come.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

Maybe, and maybe that’s where the misunderstanding is. I took the quote – "Where do you look at Ovechkin and say, ‘Wow, he’s really improved at that in five years?’" – as not just an improvement, but a “Wow”-worthy one, like Sid’s faceoffs (which, admittedly, just about everyone improves to some degree with experience).

the faceoff example is just so weak. Rookies generally get schooled on FOs. There’s some guys like Malkin that never improve for whatever reason. But more often than not, these top-tier centers have rookie seasons below 50% and steadily improve over the next 2-3 seasons to around 55%. It’s not something unique to Sid.

and them amused myself by looking up Steckel—a stellar 35% in 7 games in 05-06! (turned in a crazy 65% in 5 games the following season. Yay small sample size)

There has been improvement in his hits. People still talk about how much he hits, but I hear less about Ovie taking himself out of the play and his “dirtiness” than in the early years. Some of that stems from his over-cautiousness after the suspensions, but also choosing his spots better.

His emotional control has also improved. Yes, you can attribute that to the natural maturation process, but with someone like Ovie who wears his emotions on his sleeve it is a big change. He is still our “emotion guy” but it is less a liability on the ice. Now, if he can learn to channel those various emotional responses into lethal productivity on the ice he should regain some of his dangerous and unpredictable scoring/playmaking ability. (Olie had to learn how to corral his emotions too.)

Yeah, I’d say you do. And it’s not just about improving points totals, he’s already seen his career bests in those areas. It’s about modifying your game to continually be able to beat the way you are being defended. The book is out on him and teams have figured out how to stop the “off wing cut to the middle shoot through the D” move. Has he learned that? Will he change his approach? Thus far he hasn’t.

Basically, watching AO you see the same player you saw when he was a rookie, just less productive. That’s not a particularly comforting thought.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

I’d say where you could argue he improved the most was in passing and sharing the puck, but a lot of that has to do with having legit talent around him.

And, as I said above, AO’s D is credible, that’s about it. I wouldn’t stake my claim that he’s evolving his game on his D game.

His production dipped with the rest of the team during the middle of last season, and then we saw it rise to the levels we’re used to in the last couple months of the season and the playoffs. I don’t see why we’re adopting the typical columnist narrative that teams have “figured him out” and Ovi needs to “change his game” based on those circumstances. If he comes out of the gate slow again, then perhaps you have a point. But I believe he won’t. I guess we’ll see.

Let’s reduce it to a basis for comparison. In baseball, you have the “five skill” player — hits, hits with power, throws, runs, fields. In hockey, the five skill player might be — shoots, passes, defends, stick-handles, and (depending on the nature of the position, whether the player is a center or a winger/defenseman) hits/faceoffs.

Crosby conspicuously improved his faceoffs early in his career. Not much argument there. But this notion of his improving as a shooter/scorer impresses me as nonsense, or at least overstated. Yes, he went from 33 to 51 goals a couple of years ago. His shots also jumped by 38 percent. And last year, his shots were on a pace to jump another eight percent. His goal production has gone up as a product of more shots and better efficiency. But the root cause is perhaps not because he diligently made himself a better shooter (what, he was a stiff in juniors?) but a product of need. Hello! The Penguins have no reliable wingers. He had to assume more of the burden and could because is already an accomplished shooter.

Meanwhile, that “passes” thing. Not all assists are the product of a fancy pass, or perhaps any pass at all, but has it passed notice that over the past five years, Ovechkin’s assists-per-game numbers have gone 0.56, 0.57, 0.68, 0.82 before dropping back to 0.67 last season (he was fourth among all wingers in assists last season in what was a “down” year).

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Oct 5, 2011 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I think that skill was already there for Crosby. He had 120 goals in 121 games with Rimouski. But he subordinated that skill within the concept of what the Penguins were trying to do. I think Crosby deserves a lot of credit for that. One adjective that should never attach to his name is “selfish,” save for that he is selfish for winning. I’m not saying Crosby hasn’t put in the work to refine that aspect of his game, but perhaps he saw what cards he was holding in terms of teammates that could put the puck in the net and figured out, “I’m going to have to do more of this myself.” He was able to do that in no small part because he already had that skill in abundance.

If you've read this far...seek help.

by ThePeerless on Oct 5, 2011 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Which is precisely why maybe Ovi shouldn’t get credit for his better passing. For both players, the shifts were mostly out of necessity, perhaps.

"Fais gros comme moi!" - Alex Ovechkin

by Gould Old Days on Oct 5, 2011 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t have any advanced Corsi Sabremetric Moneyballs here, but to my eyes, Crosby’s shot now compared to his first few seasons is vastly improved. In terms of both accuracy and power, Crosby has improved dramatically. He scores more goals now from further out than he ever did before. His placement is better than it ever was. Again, that’s just what I see when I watch.

One way for Ovechkin to improve defensively would be to cycle the puck with his linemates. Skating down the wing, cutting to the middle and firing a low-percentage shot on goal allows the opposing team to gain possession and put more pressure on the Caps’ D. With Ovechkin’s freakish build and equally freakish stamina, he could wear down teams’ defense by the end of the second period, while allowing the Caps’ D to face less pressure in their own zone. If he worked on puck possession down low, nobody would be able to move him off the puck. Couple that with a the added patience to wait for the right opportunity, his offensive numbers would probably improve as well.

So if Avery is claimed, does anyone know how the salary works?

Not so much worried about the Cap hit. Just curious about where his $$$ is going to come from.

If he’s in a 4 mil/year contract

Before waiver it was 2 mil/year for Dallas and 2 mi/year for NYR.

So if he;s picked up by Team C then does it go

Team C: 2 mil
NYR: 2 mil
Dallas: Off the hook

or

Team C: 1 mil (half of what NYR was paying)
NYR: 1 mil
Dal: 2 mil

or spread even

Team C: 1.33 mil
NYR: 1.33 mil
Dal: 1.33 mil

I’m guessing that it would be the first option since I read something about Dallas being off the hook as far as cap hit and it wouldn’t seem fair that Dallas would be paying more than the Rangers.

I don’t think it’s make or break, that’s for sure. I guess it depends on risk-aversion and how much you value the opportunity to get a superior player.

I see Steckel as a dime-a-dozen type in the NHL. No upside, no real scarcity. Most 4ths don’t pan out, but I’d like the chance at landing a Holtby and just taking Betts off of waivers, personally.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

by Rob Parker on Oct 5, 2011 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

But he was a first-round pick, man! Don’t you see the potential talent there?

Don’t you think that teams are just less likely to use waiver claims in general? And I’m not sure what the reason is. There are a ton of very useful players that go through waivers at the beginning of the season, and yet the claims are never there.

Remember the waiver draft? It seemed like in a situation where there was more of a schedule, many more players were selected. Future NHL Hall-of-Famer Chris Osgood was selected in the waiver draft!

by RCheli on Oct 5, 2011 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the waivers are mostly ignored because you rarely have quality players on waivers, not anything like the reason offer-sheets are ignored.

In this case, though, Burke traded an asset for Steckel when he could have had Betts, who is a reasonable facsimile and likely not to be much of a downgrade (marginally speaking, given their minutes and role). Steckel is, however, much more durable than Betts. I’d still probably roll the dice with Betts on waivers and my 4th, but like I said it’s not a deal-breaker.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

Picking up on your word, ‘mostly,’ wasn’t Grabner a waiver pick-up? That does not take away from your point, though. Exceptions are the rule. I am sure someone, somewhere has a top 10 or something similar of waiver pick-ups. That would be fun to see.

No particular time frame. I just thought there might be some big names…..say, the last 10 years or so.

Along with the pick-ups, there are also the guys who could have been claimed…like Briere. And there are quirks like the Bryzgalov situation with Anaheim/Phoenix and the Avery re-entry waivers (and yeah the saga continues).

Don’t think I’ve seen one list anywhere, but with the Internet, I’m sure it’s out there somewhere. If someone doesn’t find one, I can type up a list for post-lockout, which I think is a more relevant time period to discuss in terms of rosters.

by Wilderthing on Oct 5, 2011 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

From Leone’s report today, the part that’s interesting to me is that they appear to want Orlov to play on the left side. From my memory of his time with Hershey last season, he was playing on the right side. From what I’ve seen and read, he’s more comfortable on the right side, but can play both.

by sk84fun_dc on Oct 5, 2011 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

It is always good to have switch hitters…just another ‘plus’ with him. Assuming Greener signs up, Carlson, Alzner, & Schultz then are set for 2 more years. That means 2 potential slots for Orlov: Wideman’s if he doesn’t re-up and Hammer either if he doesn’t pan out over next 2 years or at the end of his contract. So, Orlov would then slip into one of those slots on whichever ‘side’ is available first…. correct? Any other scenarios?

Erskine to IR to start the season, per everyone.

Collins and Orlov both practiced in HER today – will one of them be here tomorrow?

I’m sticking with my prediction on Collins (why would they have sent Orlov down just to recall him – not like the news on Erskine is unexpected), which, if accurate, will give me a tremendous feeling of smug satisfaction.

Today at 3:00 PM, I believe, and no – they’re now one player under the limit (i.e. they’re at 22 with 4 on IR and 3 on LTIR).

So the only reason I can think of to send Orlov/Collins down was to get them some time training with the Bears cause it’s likely they will be spending most of their season down there.

Other than that, I can only surmise that the team will stop at nothing to deny you any satisfaction, smug or otherwise.

Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

by dcsportsfan1 on Oct 5, 2011 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

We’ve discussed this a bit. Orlov was sent down because he’s not ready to play in the NHL and needs to be playing every night somewhere (i.e. Hershey). He was never really in the running to start the season here.

Collins got sent down when he did because he had to clear waivers going down at some point, so it made sense to send him down when waivers is flooded with similar talent and teams don’t really have needs. He cleared, doesn’t have to go on re-entry waivers, and can be with the Caps for up to 10 games/30 days and then get sent down without having to re-clear waivers.

Both moves make perfect sense.

Six Flags

Just realized that for the 2nd consecutive year Ovi will miss the STH Six Flags rollercoasterfest. Obviously, it can’t be helped and most of all, unfortunate for Ovi’s family. Global Caps fans

Just got back from New Zealand a couple days ago for the pool round of the Rugby World Cup (spoiler alert: The US sucks at rugby) and I ran into people wearing Caps gear all over the place :)

Now, I don’t think most of them were fans. mostly because when I talked to one guy wearing an Ovi shirtsey on a ferry about the Caps he looked at me like I had 2 heads, but it was nice seeing caps stuff over seas

@Elliot Friedman

I usually really like and respect, as much as anyone on the internet can, his opinion except for when he picks Henrik Lundqvist to win the Vezina. I just about burst out laughing saying “he’ll win the Vez right after he becomes the King of Denmark” Rinne, Thomas, and Miller are much better, and I’m willing to bet Vokoun could find his way into Vez talk before King Henry does.

Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."

Since its too late for anyone to respond again…#fancystats and logic. There’s definitely a correlation to how the team does and Vezina, otherwise Vokoun would of won it, or at least been nominated, every other year.

Lundqvist always starts a lot of games, leading to a lot of wins. He posts strong save percentages and GAA. The media thinks the NYR D isn’t all that great, though not porous. He’s been nominated multiple times before. It’s very possible.

Today were articles in the Wash Post and Wash Times online on whether Johansson would be the healthy scratch for the opener given that he was practicing in Ovi’s normal slot today.

Boudreau has reported that he’s like better production from MarJo than had happened in preseason. Does not want him growing complacent. And MarJo himself has admitted he should do better.

I wonder if part of Johansson’s lackluster preseason was caused by his recent illness. He had gone on the road trip to Chicago while sniffling. And then left the game since he felt dizzy and headachy. Could he have possibly been running a fever at that point? He was MIA at Caps Con, due to illness. He was back to practice the next day, but I really do wonder if his recent illness has caused him to “drag”. How much has he been coughing?
