Saturday Caps Clips: Wings @ Caps Game Day
Your savory breakfast links:
- Previews of tonight's battle of undefeateds from Vogs, NHL.com (Hunter), SI (Hackel), SB Nation DC, Peerless, Puck Buddys and CRtC, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Winging It In Motown for more coverage from the other side of tonight's match-up.
- Notes and assorted whatnot from yesterday's practice, including the latest on Michal Neuvirth's and Jay Beagle's injuries. [Caps365 video (Kettler Report, Boudreau, Neuvirth), 106.7 The Fan (audio), CI (Carrera), CW (Whyno here and here), DCEx (McNally), DSP]
- Tonight could be your last chance to see Nicklas Lidstrom in person (insert jinxtastic joke here). That's not lost on a couple of Caps Swedes. [Dump 'n Chase, WashTimes (Whyno)]
- Sidenote: Bruce Boudreau rounded out his career as a hockey player with the 1991-92 Adirondack Red Wings. Lidstrom's rookie season in the NHL was that very same season, with Adirondack's NHL affiliate in Detroit. Mind blown?
- Most of the Caps have little more than a passing familiarity with the Wings. But not Troy Brouwer and Joel Ward. [KOL]
- Mathieu Perreault provides a nice fourth-line spark. [WashTimes (Whyno), CI (Carrera)]
- Thursday night was certainly a step in the right direction for Alex Ovechkin. [WashTimes (Whyno), DCEx (McNally), SB Nation DC, CSNW (Gormley)]
- As for Tomas Vokoun, facing 40-plus shots in a game is a plenty familiar feeling. [CW (Whyno), CI (Carrera)]
- Some numbers on those last two chaps. [NHL.com (Kreiser)]
- Dennis Wideman did a phoner with the boys at NHL Live yesterday. [Capitals Overtime]
- Balance, baby. Balance. [CSNW (Gormley)]
- Where are they now (and how are they doing)? [CI (El-Bashir)]
- Milestones, ahoy. [RtR]
- Starts, streaks and stats... [Capital Spirit]
- ... and end-games. [THW, Sick Unbelievable]
- What has two thumbs and isn't buying the Caps' hot start? Chris Stevenson. [QMI]
- Apparently this whole "not losing" thing (in regulation, at least) runs in the family. [Patriot-News (Leone)]
- Good stuff on prospect Caleb Herbert. [Duluth News Tribune]
- Finally, happy 31st birthday to Matt Pettinger and happy 43rd to Terry Yake.

The Rink does provide an awesome amalgam of a-hreffage.
I think about all the shots we allowed against PIT and PHI, and I’m reminded of the series against the Habs, where we were bombarding the goaltender, to no avail. I don’t know if shooting percentages bear it out, but it feels like this incarnation of the team, thus far, is getting more with less – more goals per shot.

This will make the third time in seven games the Caps have faced a team on the back end of back-to-back games. I note it only because I had become convinced that the schedule maker only hated the Caps and never loved them. I guess I was wrong.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Meh, the schedule maker knows even the most jaded " we aren’t winning the right way" fan will eventually be won over with large numbers of early season wins. After he gets us all on gung ho, he will crsh our spirits with a brutal schedule later

The Caps can only win the games they are scheduled to play. And so far, they have.

And the Caps have had their fair share of poopy schedules – 9 game road trips in February, a bazillion back to back games…and lest us not forget Yanni.
So I’ll not apologize for the schedule thus far.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
They only play 11 games a day after playing one.

Babcock could have played Conklin last night and started Howard tonight, but chose not to. The Caps can only score on the goalie that is actually in the net. And so far, they have.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
I know last night was a divisional (thus important) win for them, but Babcock could have played a goalie from the Grand Rapids Griffins last night and still won; Columbus is really, really, bad. No Carter, Wisniewski, or Boll, and Nash didn’t even put a single shot on goal. Wings were coasting last night, and since that was their first game in a week (last game was Sat 10/15 against the Wild), I don’t expect them to be tired one bit.

DET barely broke a sweat in that one. It’s pretty rare to see an NHL team that badly overmatched.
They’ll be plenty fresh tonight.
No Holmstrom, though, so that’s something.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Despite the score, that was probably the sloppiest the Wings have played at 5-on-5 this season.
I think that it wasn’t so important to have the starter out against the divisional opponent as it was to make sure the team was focused. If your head coach throws the backup out there for a Friday game when you haven’t played for a week, he’s at least subconsciously telling his team that this game isn’t as important as the real measuring-stick game the next night.
Yeah, they’re all professionals, but the Wings spent the week serving coffee and playing SWAT. Being told through the coach’s actions that your first game back isn’t important enough to play your starter is a great way to fall into a trap game.

I’ll note that DET has not exactly played a murderer’s row:
OTT

VAN
MIN

They also can only beat the teams that are on the schedule, but this should be a measuring stick game for the Wings as well.

When the schedule came out, i was comparing the Wings schedule to the Caps schedule leading p to tonight. Caps schedule is much more demanding, even if it turns out the Tampa is a hell of a lot worse than I thought they would be.

From the where are they now article, Steckel was playing on the first line, 18 minutes, and PP time? I thought this was a team people were picking to have a shot at the playoffs. Not with Stecks at 1C. What the hell happened up there in Toronto?
Colby Armstrong left that game early with an injury and all of TML’s lines got a little crazy. But, yeah. Coach Wilson and all of Toronto are spoon/moon/June mad in love with Dave Steckel.

Well, to be fair, Connelly, Lombardi, and Bozak are all decent 2Cs, they just always seem to be hurt. They also have a couple Fleischmann like guys who can be a center, but are better on the wings.

Quite a milestone for N. Lidstrom tonight playing in his 1500th game. I would hope we recognize him on the jumbo tron.
This has probably been pointed out elsewhere, but yeah, the Caps have faced mostly backup goalies. Strange then, that they tooled the two starters they faced – Rolo and Bryz – and made Markstrom (???) look like Halak. What does that say?

I don’t really understand the focus on this issue on the part of fans and the media, whether it pertains to Beagle this year or Perreault/Green last year.
Is the player out?
Yes.
How long?
We don’t know.
Past that, who cares if they’ve got a concussion or not? Isn’t that properly the business of the player, the team, and the training staff/doctors?
Unleash the Apathy.
I think the concussion issue is different, and making it known could have some importance for young players and their parents who look to the pro team, rightly or wrongly, as role models in how the issue is handled. That said, if there is an adversarial relationship between the team and the media in getting that information out there, that’s what we have bloggers and beat writers for.

“That looks good but is not impressing some people in The District, who point out they have seen the opposition’s backup goaltenders in four of those six games (Brian Boucher, Carolina; Brent Johnson, Pittsburgh; Alex Auld, Ottawa; and Jacob Markstrom, Florida). The two No. 1s they have faced are Tampa Bay’s Dwayne Roloson and Philadelphia’s Ilya Bryzgalov.”
So we don’t get credit for having a backup goalie in net ourselves against Boucher?
And Boucher played in 34 games last year when he was on a different team. And is Jacob Markstrom such a massive downgrade from Jose Theodore? Would Craig Anderson have performed markedly better than Ottawa? I mean, they’re goaltenders. A backup isn’t an automatic 5 goals.
Talk about spurious reasoning. Of all the things you would use to judge a team’s performance, how many backup goaltenders they’ve faced should not be high on the list.

Yea his article was about as interesting a read as mark spectors. Asinine. This is the effing NHL not some youth hockey league. Every player as had to earn his way here by being damn good. Yeah some of the backups are farcrys from the starters but I’m sure he’d slam the caps for beating Tukka Rask instead of Thomas afterall the previous season it wasn’t like he unseated the again then reigning vezina. Brent Johnson is a heck of a goalie and is IMO one of the best backups in the league.
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."

Any thoughts on what is going on with Carlson? He has 1 point, whereas Alzner has 3 (one more than Green even!). I’m not worried about it; 6 games is too small a sample. But, I guess (obviously) it has to do with the playing time and productivity of Wideman. I’m nor sure how BB can re-juggle his right D to get Carlson more scoring chances but it doesn’t seem like there are enough non-pp minutes to split among them. I should also note that his defense has been tremendous so far, even better than last year it seems. I don’t know how he feels about this but I hope no issues develop with him.
That line seems to be spending its time being defensive colossi. If that means we lean on Green, Wideman, and to a lesser extent, Hamrlik (and how many Schultz shots have been deflected in thus far? What a neat situation that is!) for offensive production, I bet the team is fine with that.
Winterion Game Studios

Yeah, I hope so. Our D is just spectacular this year. Peerless, like you, gave a little justified love to Sarge today, by the way. At this point, Wideman is my #1 Caps star for skaters over the 1/2 dozen games.
I was just wondering if Carlson has said anything about his own situation. Frankly, considering his age, I think this time in his development with less spotlights and pressure is probably a good thing. Perhaps that is why is defense is really shining.
I’d go with Laich. Sample size aside, he’s completely proven himself at 3C thus far, something we were entering the season with varying opinions of potential on. Wideman, Chimera, Vokoun, and Backstrom would round out my “greenest arrows” to start the year.

Considering Carlson has been on the point for PP unit #2 with Hamrlik, getting more PP’s that actually last the full 2 minutes (aka not sabotaging it with a penalty of our own or scoring in the first minute) might help him have more of a chance for points. Otherwise as winterion says…keeping goals out of our net just as good as helping us put more in the opposing net.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

Carlson didn’t get too many power play points last year. He was 31 at ES, which actually was T-4th in the league among blueliners (though no doubt Rafalski would have passed him with a few more GP). As I recall Carlson had his ups and downs in terms of scoring last season, too. As long as his actual play doesn’t take a nosedive (it hasn’t), I’m not worried.

Agreed, I had just noticed in the first couple games with Ovie firmly off the point in 5 on 4 situations, BB had gone to 6 and 52 with the first unit, and 44 and 74 with the 2nd unit. Last few games they just haven’t seemed to get much ice time on there because of us taking penalties up a man or scoring early on in the PP.
Feel like with set pairings on the point Carlson could get more PP points this year.

Exactly. That is one reason why it is so much fun watching the D this year. It is just great. I don’t know what I enjoy more: Greenie’s stickhandling, Alzner’s spot-on instincts, Wideman’s all around superb ice presence, and even Sarge laying on everyone, etc. What fun. And to think Carlson has even hit HIS stride!
I think Carlson has looked phenomenal. His first job is stopping the opposition’s top line, and he’s doing a goddamn good job of it. The points will come. Of all the things on this team, one of the last that I would worry about is Carlson (and Hot Karl).
Unleash the Apathy.
As I said, I am not worried at all. I am enjoying him and Karl immensely. We are so lucky to have him. I was just asking if anyone has seen or heard anything that he might have said about his performance this year because Wideman may (I don’t know for sure) have taken away some of his offensive minutes….
Speaking of Lidstrom, anyone else see DGB’s piece yesterday about upcoming NHL milestones? Here’s what he said about Lidstrom:
