Possible Discipline?
Did anyone else notice Goc give Halpern a little nudge that sent Jeff headfirst into the end boards last night? It can be seen about 1:50 into the recap reel. I can’t tell if Halpy toe picked or whether the bump totally threw him off.
Is there any chance Goc will end up in front of Shanny. I remember from a couple weeks ago a similar play resulted in some games but I don’t remember the details.

I saw that and was worried. Haven’t seen t in replay so I’m not sure how egregious it was.

I am going to call BS on Bylsma for this one:
Referring to Burmistrov, Bylsma said, “It’s slightly unfortunate in that it’s a player who knows he’s going to be hit but allows himself to be hit. At the same time, we went aggressively into the check.”
Uh, this isn’t a case where a guy turns at the last second. Burmistrov was going to the boards to play the puck and the play was completely in front of Letang who “checked” him squarely from behind. It’s textbook boarding and reckless play, exactly what Shanahan wants to eliminate from the game. It’s just disappointing that Bylsma can’t simply accept that Letang boarded Burmistrov, something that Letang has done on more than one occasion. If the suspension gives Letang some time to think about his reckless play and adjust his game, then good on Shanahan.
That sense of entitlement starts with their ownership and trickles down
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.
by Sombrero Guy on Oct 19, 2011 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions
Bylsma always has excuses and blinders on for his players. Then again, that’s kind of the coach’s job. I’m glad the league stepped in – Letang is a secretly dirty player, hopefully this clips his wings a little.
Pointed out the Letang thing when the whole Beagle v. Asham discussion was happening. Very few times does any player actually take liberties against Letang vs. just giving back equally what they get. Letang does his best Brooks Orpik impressions away from the puck all the time.

As a whole, the Penguins are a pretty rough and tumble (read: dirty) team. I’m almost positive they’ve been top-3 in hits and in minor penalties the past few years and top in overall penalties last year. I may be stringing along stats to produce a narrative. . .but it’s a rather convincing narrative.
If there was a resource to see what team had the most stick penalties, i’d wager the Pens top the list. I wonder how much of it is Bylsma’s influence?
Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!
In 2010-2011, Pittsburgh had the second-most PIM/game in the NHL, trailing only the Islanders. They lead the league in minor penalties with 374, total penalties, and second-most in major penalties and game misconducts.
They weren’t top 3 in any category in 2009-2010, though they had the sixth most PIM/g. Philly lead the league that season, as well as the season before.
This season, keeping in mind absurdly small sample size and that some teams have played a lot more that others, find the Rangers leading the way on penalties Pittsburgh being relatively clean (consider they just had a guy suspended), and Detroit and Washington are the two least penalized teams, as far as PIM/g.

This is the kind of “class” that pens fans applaud Bylsma for. He might give a classy quote (with multisyllabic words that sound nice) but the meat of his quotes displays special kind of homerism and lack of accountability. Most of the time he’d probably be better off not saying anything rather than defend defenseless actions by his players.
Suspend Colin Campbell!
I’m not sure that’s entirely fair… How often do you hear a coach outright condemn the actions of one of his players in a case like this?
by Murshawursha on Oct 19, 2011 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Outright condemn isn’t necessary, but there were cases where someone like Cooke does a flying elbow to someone’s head and in the presser he says the other player was in the wrong. He could have said something like: I didn’t get a good look, we’ll look at it later; or something vague. Instead he goes in the entirely opposite direction and attacks the victim or completely absolves his player.
Suspend Colin Campbell!
Most of the time he’d probably be better off not saying anything rather than defend defenseless actions by his players.
I suppose if I’d have just read the end of your first post I’d have picked that up on my own… Derp. My bad.
I dunno. Watching the the replay, I think Burmistrov probably could have gone into the boards at an angle to get that puck out rather than squaring to them and turning his back to Letang. That said, Letang probably should have let up instead of finishing the check once he did.

haven’t you ever seen Might Ducks? Coach Bombay wants Charlie to elbow the guy next time he gets his stick up in charlie’s face. But Charlie won’t do it.
That’s what this reminds me of.
/OT
Actually he wants him to clutch his eye like he’s been hurt. But a coach would never ask a player to take a dive…

I saw that, and was wondering why there wasn’t a call. I could see Shanny giving it a look. Is Goc a first-time offender?
My mind is all twisted like a peanut.
a lot of non-calls last night. Including Green getting speared. I know we sorts wanted to refs to just let them play because that plays to the caps strengths, but penalties are penalties.
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Supporting autism awareness and treatment.
The spear on Green and Goc boarding Halpern were the two worst non-calls. A lot of the others were borderline – and I’m fine with the refs not calling them, as long as they’re consistent.
My mind is all twisted like a peanut.
I know the lack of PPs contributed to this…but still….
No Washington forward had more than Alex Ovechkin’s 17:35
Any idea when the last time Ovechkin’s minutes were managed so well?
He had 15:24 (0 on the PP) last March vs. NJD right before missing three games and had had 16:07 (1:57 on the PP) in a game last March vs. CAR a week earlier.

Real Sports did a piece last night on fighters, concussions and CTE. Pretty much what you’d expect (kinda sad as Bernard Goldberg does some great stuff for that show), if nothing else the takeaway for me was watching Cam Stewart talk. He coached Boogaard and you can tell he’s still trying to process it.

I know it is early and all that small sample size jazz, but I have two questions:
1. If you drafted Ovi in your fantasy pool, how did you do week 1?
2. Has anyone tried to get Ovi from you yet? If so, what did they offer?

I’d just like to point out that Semin has one ankle injury on his profile (2007), so I’m real curious as to why you think that should be a significant concern.

IIRC it kept him in and out of the lineup five times. But again, the analysis I have done is preliminary and I am not going to debate it right now.

Yeah, but it was one season, in-and-out just means he kept trying to come back too soon. Unless it happens in different seasons (or with like 30 healthy games in between) I don’t think it’s fair to call it a separate injury. Ankle injuries are tough to recover from within a season, but I’m not aware of guys that have had them hamper them for a career after they got a summer to heal. I don’t need the full post, just looking for one example.

And we’re talking just skaters if we’re talking top-5 in GVT, right?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
You’ve got to, goalies are definitely inflated relative to skaters. If you count Gs there’s no chance, there will only be two skaters, tops, in the top-5 GVT I suspect. And GVT is also favorable to Kessel because it minimizes his glaring weakness, but even given that, I think there will be more than 5 skaters with higher GVT.

There is the fact that Kessel is at that age where we may very well see another big leap in his numbers. His production has been around 30-30-60 for the past three seasons (since age 21), so I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets up to 35-35-70, maybe even higher.

Law of transitivity.
If A = B, and B = C, then A = C. In this instance, if it was the goalie’s fault for the fiirst two goals, and the two goal deficit led to an empty net situation, then it was the goalie’s fault for the empty net situation.

Musings from last night:
In my totally unbiased opinion, I feel like Alzner’s performance last night was superb. He and Carlson were big reasons that amazing cycle kept going, and those 2 paired with the 3rd line is the best unit we’re throwing on the ice right now. Alzner also had some timely pinches and his usual steady defensive play along the boards in our own end.
Green also had a nice night. Some great passes and some real nice runs toward the net to create some amazing chances. His shot accuracy was unfortunately off though. He shot low and center on a beautiful scoring chance when he needed to put anywhere on the left side of the net and then totally missed the cage on a few other chances. Hopefully, he gets it back next game.
Also, I bet no one noticed that Jeff Schultz played 17:22 last night… which means that he did his job and did it well. :)

I watched only about 20 minutes of the game last night, but the one thing I got from it is that Markstrom looks freaking gigantic out there. Even when he was on his knees, it looked like he filled up the net.
I’ve liked what I’ve seen from Joel Ward this year so far. I still think he isn’t worth what he is paid, but rarely are any free agents worth their salary. But he’s a lot closer than what I had expected.
Watching Ward this season, I was reminded of a small good article I read a few years ago on Ulf Dahlen where he talked about puck protection and doing all the little things right. This is an excerpt from the article
When Ulf Dahlen goes into the corner for a loose puck, he always seems to come out with it. Considered one of the top puck-protection men in the league, Dahlen says the main reason for his success is that he is comfortable playing the puck with his skates.
"If a guy’s grabbing my stick," he explains, "I use my feet."
Dahlen says when he is in the corner protecting or retrieving a puck, a defenseman will often come in and try to take his stick out of the play.
"They want to work on my stick," he says. "But if they go work on your feet, you’re going to go down and they might get a penalty."
Dahlen says it’s hard for a defenseman to legally check a skate, whereas a stick is fairly simple for a defenseman to neutralize.
Also, going to the corner often means taking a hit, which is something else Dahlen feels he can use to his advantage. After a player throws a hit, it takes him a moment to regroup. Dahlen uses that split second to get better control of the puck or make a pass
.
Ward has the same mentality. Watching that one shift last night where the third line cycled the hell out of the puck and play keepaway was one of my season highlights so far. The Dahlen article quoted above can be found here.
by Rather Bengt on Oct 19, 2011 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions
That’s a good article.
For a while in the early-to-mid-00s, the referees used to whistle the play dead if it was at the boards with a couple of guys fighting for it (or just standing there, actually). Thankfully, they’ve stopped that and had guys start to work for possession again. Ward is a strong guy on his skates, and digging that puck out and cycling are two of his attributes.
Watching that one shift last night where the third line cycled the hell out of the puck and play keepaway was one of my season highlights so far.
All the boards are Ward’s.

Ha, Brown U players aren’t exactly ‘known’; I saw a stat by College Hockey this morning that he was the first Brown player since 2004 to score a goal in the NHL, but that didn’t sound right so when I got to a computer I looked it up and it wasn’t correct, Volpatti had a goal last year. Someone with the Canucks was awake and already noted the correction, too.
Question Was McPhee’s Chalk Talk to STH discussed on here last night?
If note, two most interesting things learned last night:
1) Caps hired a sleep specialist over the summer; if I heard correctly, has met with some players individually; provides input to team on practice times, when they travel, etc. This was mentioned after a STH asked a question about whether the Caps have considered consulting a sleep specialist.
2) Caps considered requesting to host the draft this summer – Not going to happen for 2012.
Still, as one would expect now that Leonsis owns the building, etc., more likely for something like this to happen in the future and from anything he said, it sounded like they were very interested in hosting a future draft.
McPhee noted there was a conflict with an event already scheduled for sometime during the time block needed to host the draft. Also, he stated that he was surprised at how much time the building was needed to be set aside for the draft for set-up, break down, etc., as required by the NHL
I’d love to have a draft or ASG here. I know it’s a ton of work and those are league events, but they can be great showcases for the team and city. I have really fond memories of doing the fan stuff at the 2004 ASG in Minnesota.
and whatever is booked for June, they haven’t released it yet. Just checked the VC schedule and they have nothing for June. Guessing it’s a concert that hasn’t been announced.
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Supporting autism awareness and treatment.
In the off case that the NBA season starts, they choose to make up the time lost at the end of the season, and every team but one western conference team and the Wizards fold, they will need the Verizon Center for basketball.

They wouldn’t make up the missed time, because that would interfere with the off-season for the following year. Basketball isn’t it.

Agree I’ve been and had a great time. McPhee sounded very enthusiastic about the idea. I was thinking while he was talking that this summer could have been a lot of fun with 2 first round picks as of now. Wondering if that was what they were thinking, too.
2012
Caps own all their own picks except:
2nd Traded to NJD in Arnott deal
Added Colorado’s first and either Boston’s second in 2012 or Colorado’s second in 2013 (Washington’s option) in Varlamov deal
Added Winnipeg’s 4th round pick in 2012 in Eric Fehr trade on July 8 (Paquette also traded to Washington in the trade)

Nice to see Katie Carrera investigating into Ovie’s absence from practice today rather than settling for “just a maintainance day.” Also, props to JP for acknowledging her nice work over twitter.
I’m really not liking the idea that they’re both right, though. Two slashes on the hand in the first five games of the season? That hand is going to be a target the rest of the season. Targeted slashes (which they weren’t necessarily) should be considered intent to injure and suspendable offenses.
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
Yeah, “maintenance day” is fishy. I tweeted, “If the slash to the thumb that Ovechkin took with 4:15 left in regulation opening night is worse than has been reported, it’d explain a lot. Letang’s slash on Backstrom last year was pretty similar, and looked even more innocuous at the time. It turned out not to be, of course.”
Glad she had the same question.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Definitely reason to question so early in the season…it’s easy to say the earlier rest was due to his trip, but the slash(es) left that questionable from the start.
I snapped a couple of pictures of his hand when he took his glove off in game 1; different view than what you tweeted; hopefully, they are still on the memory card…I will look tonight.
My memory/view of the pictures was that it was his pointer finger not his thumb that looked off? Again, hopefully I still have the pics.
