Fun Penguin/Capitals fact…
The last time the Capitals lost a game in regulation in Pittsburgh (February 18, 2007), Jocelyn Thibault was the winning goaltender, and Brent Johnson (currently the backup goalie in Pittsburgh) was the losing goalie for the Caps. Only five Caps who played in that game are with the club now (Ovechkin, Erskine, Laich, Schultz, Semin)

The Caps have won their last visit to three different Pittsburgh buildings: the Igloo, Heinz Field and Consol. The first two are safe, it would seem, but it would be nice to keep that third streak alive.
Wake me up when they finally win at Three Rivers Stadium.

If I’ve counted correctly, since the lockout the longest a coach had been with their team prior to winning the Cup was Julien who was with Boston for four season.
Shortest, obviously, was Bylsma with 1/2 season. Q, Carlyle and Laviolette had finished their second seasons with their teams and Babcock had coached the Wings for three years.

Last year, any time someone on the point had the puck, a Cap just darted for him immediately.
I haven’t seen that the last two games. By design or are people just that damn tired? I guess against TB you’re pretty much worn out as a PKer.
Try again – against Tampa they were a perfect 4-for-4 on the kill.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’m not saying they weren’t effective. I’m just saying I don’t see them attacking anywhere near as much the last two games.
Although with only 7 PP shots against with that much power play time, they did pretty damn well, but looked like mostly from blocking that clearing.
TB only got 3 PP shots during the game, and 4 PP shots in OT. But man, imagine if time hadn’t expired. Shots are only counted when a shot on goal, right? They don’t alley ones that just missed or hit the crossbar, do they?
Imagine how that game would have turned out if they didn’t shorted OT to 5 minutes? We still had over a minute of PK left and everyone looked DOGGGGG tired
What I’ve seen isn’t necessarily less attacking as less anticipating and more chasing. The PKers have been moving their feet, but it’s been a lot more reactive than proactive, it seems. But it’s an awfully small sample, especially when you consider that some key PKers (Backstrom, Carlson) have accounted for half of the minors the team’s taken.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
. The PKers have been moving their feet, but it’s been a lot more reactive than proactive
I guess it’s better. Last year when we really attacked the puck at the point on the PK, it seemed like a dog chasing a car now that you think about it: Ok you got it, now what? If you go after that puck, your momentum is going hard away from the play, so if the player guards the puck from you, he’s got you on a 5 on 3 now really quick.
(Backstrom, Carlson) have accounted for half of the minors the team’s taken.
I guess unlike me with my factual opinions…you are actually stating this as fact. And if that truly is the case I will reserve judgement on the PK for a few more games…Backis by far has been our best forward on the PK and if he is in the box that doesnt help much…but the PK in the Carolina game was god awful.
Check out a new social network, Hockey Connect, a place for coaches, players, family and fans to share strategies and experiences.
the PK in the Carolina game was god awful
Yep, and the awful was mostly 44 and 52.
Know who was sitting in the box when both of those goals (i.e. the only ones the Caps PK has allowed so far) were scored?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Any reason (I assume it’s not just based on the shit show we saw vs. CAR).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
No, not just CAR. I’ve been looking for the PK save pct from last year, but I suck at finding these stats. My impression is that the save percentage was high. That and I’m naturally pessimistic.
I swear there’s a way to make NHL.com spit out this data but I’m damned if I can figure it out.

Huh? The Caps had the second-best PK in the League… it seemed to you like they were better than that?

nah I retracted that statement…I was strictly looking at save %…trying to find SA by team
Check out a new social network, Hockey Connect, a place for coaches, players, family and fans to share strategies and experiences.
JP – I am by no means a #fancystats guy I know we were a league 2nd best at 85.6% which is a calculation on goals allowed by times on the PK…I want to see where we ranked on shots allowed on the PK by team…isnt that a better way to determine exactly how effective the PK is? Or am I way off base?
Check out a new social network, Hockey Connect, a place for coaches, players, family and fans to share strategies and experiences.
I can see problems with that. First, how many PK’s each team takes. Second, a good PK could actually allow more shots by killing the penalty, and therefore facing a 2 minute PP with no goal and a few shots instead of a 30 second PP with a goal and 1 or 2 shots. Maybe it would be better if you broke it down further, like how many shots/60 PK minutes (or whatever unit of time).
My mind is all twisted like a peanut.
I’d think that the percentage of penalties killed would be the best way to judge a PK’s effectiveness over the course of a season, but that’s just me (and most everyone else on earth).
But what you’re getting at is also informative. To that end, check out BtN. Here, for example, is the Shots Against/60 at 4v5 from last year. The Caps were 6th-best there, and had a better SV% than the five teams ahead of them – that’s part of the reason they ended up with such a great PK overall.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
That was what I was looking for. I agree that from the outside the best way to judge PK is by % of PK. That is in fact the end result. However my point was to remove the goalie…how many SA/60 on the PK was our unit allowing. Basically looking to judge the unit – netminder. And damn was Pitt good.
Check out a new social network, Hockey Connect, a place for coaches, players, family and fans to share strategies and experiences.
You should really refer to at least one other thing: short-handed goals. I would argue that number of shots against (per min, or per 60) is probably a better metric than goals scored as well. Especially if the unit didn’t keep shots from being significantly farther away than league average (not that I think that would happen, but it would definitely affect my evaluation if they could do that consistently).

I’d argue that, on its face, percentage of penalties killed is not the best way to judge PK effectiveness, for a few reasons that I’ll give below. However, in practice it turns out to be a reasonable approximation.
I did two fanposts a while back where I assessed the PP and PK in terms of goals for (PP) and goals against (PK) per 2 mins of uneven strength time. (in the below discussion, I use PP and PK somewhat interchangeably, but the points are generally valid either way)
The reasoning to look at it this way is the goofy way PP/PK opportunities are counted. In the raw statistic, a full minor penalty counts the same as a full major penalty, and also counts the same as three seconds of leftover PP after 1:57 of 4-on-4. Also, after a goal is scored on a major penalty, it is counted as a new uneven situation. Thus, by the standard metric, it is impossible to be perfect (on the PP) if you have a major penalty power play. There will always be one more opportunity that you didn’t score on.
I thought that a time dependent rate stat would be better suited due to these issues, but also because a team that scores faster, say 30 seconds in to a 2 minute minor, should rate better than a team that can’t score on a 9 minute PP (e.g., the Caps on Sloan’s hit from a few years ago). Similarly, a team that kills off 1:50 of a PK should (perhaps) be rated better than a team that gives up a goal 15 seconds in.
The end result for the 1.5 seasons I looked at was that this method didn’t really change how the teams were ranked relative to each other. There were a few spots were two teams swapped places in the rankings, but it didn’t really matter all that much. Also, it didn’t make the gaps between the top teams and the lower teams more apparent (at least I don’t remember this). So I never ran the same analysis again, even though I had intended to. Maybe I can do it again, now that BTN (or one of the other stat sites) does a better job parsing the data than I did before.
TL;DR: Percentage killed probably is not the best way, but in practice it turns out to be a pretty damned good way.

I’ve been on this bandwagon for a while. Rate is a better way to do it for sure.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
The problem is that rate skewers things just as much as chances, because a PP goal that is scored after only 8 seconds is much worse (in rate stats) than one that is scored after 1:52. And both give you the same result — a goal against.
But wouldn’t it show that a PK is better if that goal was held off for 1:52, rather than given up in 8 seconds?
"You can want to get to April but when you get to April you may not like the answers you get, so you might as well enjoy the ride while it's going on." - Brian McNally on JRR, 8/29/2011
But they don’t both indicate the same level of talent in the units, and the rate state at least adjusts for the extremely short PPs.
It’s easy enough to run % numbers as well. I don’t see why it has to be either/or.
And if you are talking about the result- a goal against, shouldn’t it just be the raw totals you are interested in?
Obviously, this is all speculation.
I don’t know.
For PPs or PKs that last less than 10 seconds (but not because of a goal scored), could those be thrown out (even if a goal is scored)?
Could we have a PP+ rate (something like ERA+ or OPS+ in baseball) where the number could be associated with how other teams do with number of shorthanded goals added in?
I’ve certainly seen situations where giving one up in eight seconds is better than giving one up after 1:52. (late in the game, and tied or trailing)
Geeks of All Nations, Compile!
by AMusingFool on Oct 13, 2011 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions
Sure, but ideally situations like the one you suggest are quite rare, and thus fall out in the wash.
This is also the likely reason that ranking by rate vs ranking by % doesn’t really change much. Penalties are killed far more often than goals are scored. It doesn’t take many two minute kills to hide that 8 second screw up.

Unlike with the powerplay, raw performance on the penalty kill (over a 40 game sample) is a superior predictor of future PK performance than is shot prevention. Part of that can be attributed to the fact that penalty skill save percentage is considerably more reliable than powerplay shooting percentage.
Furthermore, including misses and blocks is of no assistance. It seems as though better penalty kills force their opponents to take a greater proportion of missed and blocked shots.

FWIW, Likens’ reply:
Skill differences in team save percentage are greater as compared to team shooting percentage, and that’s true on both special teams and at even strength.
To illustrate this, here are the talent standard deviations for EV SH%, EV SV%, PP SH% and PK SV%, all at the team level.
EV SH% 0.0048
EV SV% 0.0055
PP SH% 0.0047
PK SV% 0.0115
But as you can see, the talent standard deviation for PK SV% is much larger than for EV SV% – over twice as large, in fact.
The possible implication of this is that team factors (i.e shot quality factors) are more important in respect of PK SV%.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
My implication was simply that PK Sv% is simply (1-PP Sh%). If one is fairly consistent (reliable), the other has to be by definition.
Unleash the Apathy.
I don’t think that’s right. The worst PK team might be 70%, the best 90%, while PPs don’t range from 30% to 10%, more like 14-25.

If you look at a single team, it’s absolutely right. Or if you look at the NHL as a whole it is. Every PP either is killed or gets a goal.
My mind is all twisted like a peanut.
Not sure I understand here. Neither the spread nor reliability has to be equal unless the same two teams are playing against each other in every game.
If you have PKsv% as {v1, v2…v30} and PPsh% as {h1, h2…h30} for one half of Likens’ sample. The other half, say the PKsv% stays {v1, v2…v30} but now PPsh% could be {h2, h3…h30, h1}.

Likens’ use of “reliable” here is as “reliable indicator of true talent level.” And it makes sense if only because the individual PK SV% over the course of any reasonable number of games is going to be based on a much larger sample than the invidiual PP SH%.
Take a ten-game stretch. Say one goalie is in goal for all ten and the team gives up 7 PP SOGs per game. You’ve then got a 70-shot sample on which to judge that G.
At the same time, say the PP gets 7 PP SOGs per game. You’ve then got a 70-shot sample, but it’s likely distributed among at least a half-dozen players, probably more. So each sample is smaller and one goal here or there impacts it to a much larger degree.
Obviously overall PK SV% = (1-PP S%). But on the individual level, the PK SV% is a more reliable indicator or true talent level than the PP S%. Or so goes the argument, if I’m following it correctly.

I still think Neuvirth was injured in the first preseason game of the season and has been fighting something since that time. Not so good for SC as the Stingrays season starts tomorrow night, unless Holtby returns to Hershey in the morning.
Hershey plays Friday at Norfolk; home opener Saturday.
SC plays Fri and Sat at home. First 2 games of the season.
With Caps not playing back to back, would they rotate the backup between Holtby and Sabourin? I’d pretty much hope not, as I’d prefer to not see Sabourin in red. Maybe Neuvirth is good enough to backup by Saturday and there’s nothing to worry about. ::crosses fingers::
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
Both goalies are capable of playing back to back games, so my guess would be no on rotating the goalies. Could send Holtby up and down to start Friday night as another option.
Curious which SC goalie gets recalled, Grubauer or Machesney. I know some SC fans won’t be happy losing a goalie for the weekend so early in the season, as in the beginning of the season.
SC at the bottom of the food chain will just have to deal. Too bad for them. Twitter is all fired up over this. Fun times.
Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.
SC always has to deal and yes, that’s reality, as I discuss it with SC fans frequently. The issue is they had to trade a ECHL goalie, Shane Owen, to make room for 2 goalies, Machesney and Grubauer, coming down on AHL and NHL contracts, respectively. I’m intrigued to see which goalie gets recalled and which goalie potentially is tagged to handle the back to back ECHL starts.
Stuccio tweets he think Grubauer will join Hershey in Norfolk tomorrow night. Lebanon Valley College filling in as second goalie at Bears practice today.
Maybe this is an overgeneralisation that you hear, but I really think the NHL community is much closer than that of the NFL, MLB, or NBA. Things like the Lokomotiv benefit seem to be no-brainers for hockey.
So is throwing bananas at certain players….all kidding aside I think it is something engrained in Hockey players at a very young age. Much more so than any other sport. Now the NFL does alot of stuff but that is more for the production quality and less from the heart.

I don’t follow the other leagues as closely, but I believe the international nature of the NHL and its players is a big factor with things like this. As to the “community”, I find it hard to comment. OT: When it comes to community outreach, fundraising, etc., seems like that is true for a segment of pro athletes in each league.

At the end of the day, the hockey community is actually pretty tiny. There aren’t many places for kids with NHL potential to play, so by the time you get drafted you’ve either played against or played with a ton of guys in your draft class.

Are you saying that from a pure Caps perspective? Yeah, it’d be fun to have Detroit in the division — no issues there. But from a leaguewide perspective this is pretty darned stupid.
Hell, the Western Conference almost fixes itself. Move Winnipeg to the NW, Colorado to the Pacific, and Dallas to the Central. Done!

Why is that a problem?
Divisions have 5 teams. There are 4 western Canada teams now. It’d be cool to have them in one division together. Why not pair them with Minnesota or Colorado?

It’s a problem for the Minnesota Wild or Colorado Avalanche in terms of being the only American based team, plus some time zone issues.
I’m just not getting it. Why would a team have a problem with being the only America based team? What does the border have to do with any of this?

I haven’t read a ton on this, but it’s brought up in relation to some of the financial issues for a team related to travel, local tv, and other issues. Plus there’s still a time zone issue with almost any scenario and some of this will be about which owners have strong voices, etc.
Time zones are a problem in the Western Conference no matter what the league adopts — that’s just going to be a fact of life. But Colorado in the Pacific, Winnipeg in the Northwest, and Dallas in the Central is better for time zones than Colorado in the Northwest, Winnipeg in the Central, and Dallas two time zones away from their division mates in the Pacific.

The team should like it, the owners not so much.
Minny would get to play Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnepeg 6 times a year. Not the strongest of teams – or attendance draws.
a half-way competitive team on the ice for Minnesota means few (if any) attendance problems. It’s only with a string of really sub-par teams that they start fretting about 90% attendance.
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Supporting autism awareness and treatment.
That kind of consideration changes pretty quickly, too. Edmonton, for one, is amassing so much young talent right now, it’s hard to imagine they won’t at least be above average within a couple of years.

At least the Central and the Southeast kinda look like each other. Either do it geographically or don’t. Why should Detroit have to fly over non-conference cities to land in divisional games? Why should Winnipeg fly over Minnesota? CHEWBACCA’D.

Is flying really that big of a deal? Detroit’s flight time in division will now max out at 3 hours (to Miami), and an hour of that is just being on the runway. Their travel schedule will still not come close to what teams in California have to live with.
I’m saying it doesn’t really make sense to do geographic divisions anymore with how spread the league is becoming.

Yeah, I guess.
I just think that there’s always going to be problems because the NHL has to deal with trying to keep rivalries intact as well as the obvious imbalance of teams east of the Mississippi.
I mean, I work for a company that does dinner programs for pharmaceutical companies. We have a series coming up with 100 of them. 82 are in the East/Central, and 18 are in the Mountain/West. It’s just how it is.
Right. But would you rather every rivalry be continued (I mean, Leafs – Wings was a big rivalry and kind of still is), or would you rather parity? And rivalries, truly heated rivalries, are born entirely out of “These two teams are successful” now more than geography, because people don’t always get behind the local squad now.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
by Whiter Mage on Oct 13, 2011 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions
I think that you should try and keep as many rivalries as possible, but not to go overboard.
The biggest rivalry of the late-90s was Detroit/Colorado, but they weren’t in the same division.
Putting teams in the same division doesn’t create a rivalry – who fucking cares about the Panthers? Playoff matchups create rivalries. Granted, you could have divisional playoffs, but in lieu of that, the divisional rivalries are a joke.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
On top of this, do you think Detroit and the Pens don’t have a little bit of fire between them when they play? It’s definitely there. Two SCF match ups have worn those teams into arrowheads that get launched at each other.

Charter flying is absolutely not a big deal. I have zero sympathy for NHL travel at this point. The worst NHL charter plane is going to be at least as nice as first class commercial. Boo hoo. If they learned how to ride buses in the CHL, NCAA, or AHL, they can live with cushy flight accommodations. Time zones I’m more sensitive to (though apparently you can’t complain after 24 hours), but smart scheduling could easily address that.

The twitter updates on will he/won’t he play re. Crosby are growing old already.
Am I the only one who thinks even if he was cleared and ready it would be a bad thing for his return to be against the Caps, given the history between the teams.
I’d fall off my chair shocked if he was cleared for contact and returned to NHL game action on the same day.
Somewhat related, though – Crosby cleared… Crosby and Malkin taking line rushes this morning… Anyone who thinks the Pens don’t care about the rivalry and adding drama to it is an idiot.
Back on point, if he’s cleared and ready, I don’t see why you wouldn’t put him in immediately, regardless of opponent. Can’t hide him forever.

He got 23 last year (66 GP), but I’m supposing that came with more plum goal-scoring assignments. The years prior he scored 13, 7, 16 and 21 in GP of 50, 20, 62 and 82.
He’s a good grinder with some offensive contribution. Maybe that’s just what those guys cost, though.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
D’oh. You are correct.
So 13, 23 and 21 goals in the prior 3 seasons.
I guess he really is a good grinder with pretty decent contributions.
3.75M isn’t so bad.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
It’s not great, it’s not terrible. It just is.
And, like I said, the two years means that if there is a decline, the team isn’t going to be paying for it too long.

It that it was only two. That’s a smart signing.
Unless you are a superstar, more than two years is really rolling the dice. (It’s scary with superstars, too, but the payoff is so much greater.)
Right, it’s not a long commitment. When was the last time a team regretted signing an injury prone guy to a two year extension during the first month of the expiring-contract-season? PIT will be fine.

I see what you did there.
I think the only difference is that when Poti was re-signed, it was obvious that he was no longer a top-4 defenseman on the team. One’s game was going downhill, and the other one is stagnating.
I actually like the Kuntiz signing from a PIT perspective. I obviously always hated the Poti one.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
I think that the Caps, with Alzner and Carlson becoming legitimate NHL defensemen, the need for Poti was not really there.
The Pens lack quality wingers, and they need Kunitz.
If the need for Poti was not really there, why’d they sign Hamrlik?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I know. I’m just hating on Poti. Even if Poti was healthy we needed someone better than him.
And if Poti is healthy we can’t really afford Hamrlik.

When I was going to school in Pittsburgh (from ’90 to ’94) during the first round of the playoffs in ’91 (when they won the cup), the recap of the games — playoff games, mind you — were never above the fold and were often not even on the front page of the sports section.
The Penguins were the fourth or fifth most important team in those days behind the Steelers, Pirates, Panthers, and Nittany Lions.
Winning breeds greater coverage.
I was about to make a snarky comment there about the Pirates, but I suppose they took their (incredibly extended) nose-dive in the middle of that period.

You’re right, it isn’t. My view is that I want anything that can help my team win. Crosby being off the ice helps my team win games, so I want that to happen.
I don’t want his long-term health at risk. I would love for crosby to have another 20 years in his career – but never score another point
I guess my view point is that in addition to being a life long Caps fan I’m a HUGE hockey fan. A healthy Sidney Crosby playing in the NHL is good for the Penguins, the NHL and the internatinal hockey community. I hate him as a player because he plays for one of the Caps rivals, but the NHL could not have recovered from the lock out the way it is without Ovechkin AND Crosby.
He helped to a certain degree, absolutely. I think there wouldn’t be a team in Pitt anymore if he didn’t come along. I guess the ugly side of my competitiveness is showing through on this subject, but I honestly feel like the game would be no less enjoyable for me if he never laced them up again (not that that is my desire). Not to mention it would help the caps, and every other team in the league.
Not to mention it would help the caps, and every other team in the league.
Disagree with teh second part of that statement. Both Crosby and Ovechkin put asses in seats in the NHL markets that struggle. Teams like the NYI sell out when Crosby come to town…that’s beyond huge.

Also, it is in my opinion that whether or not crosby plays, doesn’t change my enjoyment level of the game. This is an opinion, I know.
It matters because a league without it’s best players will suffer. And if the league suffers, your team suffers.
Believe me, when it comes to the playoffs, I’d love for every star player on the team the Caps are playing to fall ill (not career threatening, just a week long bout of food poisoning would be nice).
Imagine a league of fourth line pluggers and goons. You may not like that Crosby plays for the Pens and has had more success than the Caps, but that shouldn’t mean you should want him out of the game. See, NBA without Magic/Bird/Jordan…

by Martyvburen on Oct 13, 2011 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions
The prices weren’t the issue for tonight’s game; not at all. And I’ve already been in the arena for the WBS Hershey game last season.
How was it? And how dies it compare to VC?
by Martyvburen on Oct 13, 2011 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Nice. You will see tonight. 10 years makes a difference in terms of arena design, as does land, IMO.
Difference: Consol’s not even close to as middle-of-the-city as VC. I’m sure the inside’s nice, but the location doesn’t lend itself well to going out to a bar or a restaurant pre- or post-game.

Yeah, it’s just in a really . . . odd location. It’s right on the edge of the city, but not near enough to anything besides roads. It’s like it can’t decide whether it wants to be a city or suburb stadium.

Assuming he plays, Hamrlik will appear in his 1,314th career NHL game. That will tie former Whalers/Devils/Rangers/Thrashers forward Bobby Holik’s career record for Czech players.

He’s questionable to play, but likely to skate in warm-ups and is planning to participate in the ceremonial face-off with Ovechkin.
Well, if Crosby plays, he needs to be hit…keep it clean, but play hockey…
Not surprised if they try and fight anyone who looks at him though.
If and when he plays, assuming he doesn’t adjust his style and I bet he doesn’t, he’ll get hit. He goes into the tough areas regularly.
I would be opposed to hunting for a shot on Crosby, just because I don’t want to hear all the hullabaloo that would ensue.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Not because it’s just a bad strategy, and a dirty hit is garbage in general? I could give a shit what the fignuts in the media say about a clean hit.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
If you know a guy is favoring a body part, you’re gonna do little things to pester the guy – and since the head is off limits (like the foot is), you’re gonna do more things like whitewashing the face with your glove, or hitting harder through the shoulder.
If Crosby is back tonight, I’m honestly not too worried – He’s probably not 100% yet, and he’s being injected into a team that, for all intents and purposes, could wait for him. His minutes will likely have to be managed, and he’ll get lots of PP time but not so much regular strength. Who knows.

And they have Steve Mason in net. What happened to that guy? I watched CBJ last night and he makes Holtby look calm in the crease.
COL had at least three shots when Mason was behind the net, having vacated it due to over-commitment, a bad decision to play the puck, or a bad play with the puck once he got it. His D bailed him out on a couple of those by tying up sticks and on another someone just plain missed. He also juggled routine shots, couldn’t track the puck and generally jumped around on pretty easy chances. He looked literally nothing like a guy that should be in an NHL net.
Carter had to be thinking, “dude, what the hell…”
Patron saint of quality footwear.
He looks back at the goal, and it’s like he’s back in Philly as he remembers it.
I have planned my grand attacks; I will stand behind their backs. With my brand new battle-axe, they will taste my wrath. They will hear me say as the pavement whirls, "I hate California girls."

I’ve never seen Philly’s goalies look as bad as that. Not Backlund, not Boucher, nobody.
Remember when Holtby came up last year and looked like a scalded dog out there, challenging 3 feet out of the creas, sliding clean out of the net when he moved laterally, and swimming in the crease constantly? Mason looked worse.
Not a viable NHL netminder, at least if his performance last night is any indication.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Another example: incredibly, COL still trailed by a goal with under a minute to play, so they’ve got the extra attacker on.
Big scrum down low, two guys in front for a screen, and the puck gets passed back to the point. Now, we all know what’s coming – a blast into traffic, hoping for some luck.
What does Mason do? Well, he can’t see, but instead of getting down in the butterfly, making himself big and playing the percentages, he’s sort of in a half-crouch but craning his head up to try and see over the guys in front of him. Sides of the net? Totally vacated.
The shot glanced off a guy in front and headed for the lower corner – where Mason’s pad should have been – and the game was tied. Mason never moved.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Goalie Guild has had some interesting things to say in the past week far about Mason and his mental state. His twitter timeline is worth a look.
Here he is on Mason:
STEVE MASON: They say you should never shake a baby, but through the first week of action, I really just want to give Mason a real vicious shake. Even with a whole summer to mentally and physically prepare with new goalie coach Ian Clark, Mason is showing the same signs of inconsistency as he had over the past two seasons. Through his first four games, Mason is 0-3-1 with a 3.24 GAA and .892 SP%, stopping just 99-of-111 shots. That’s only 27.75 shots per game, so clearly he’s not making the timely saves. I will say that he battled really hard in the third period against the Avalanche last night and started to regain some confidence. But giving up a goal with 40 seconds left to Gabriel Landeskog was unfortunate and untimely, and he couldn’t come through in the shootout.
Just noticed that CSNWashington.com has now added a Minor League Report page in their Capitals section, with info (and video) on the Bears and ‘Rays. Of course, we get more info here from sk8 and Emily, but it’s good to see the local media picking it up as well.

OT Factoid about Prince Albert, Saskatchewan: Back when Saskatchewan came to be as a Canadian province, its 3 major cities were Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert. They wanted to be fair and have each major city represented by something significant. Regina ended up getting the Parliament buildings and was designated the capital city of Saskatchewan. Saskatoon got the major university and corresponding hospital linked to the school. Prince Albert ended up with the prison.
